Why sports cars grade so badly on Efficiency
Coupes and convertibles post the lowest Efficiency medians on the site. The band they are graded against, the economy figures they actually post, and why the grade is telling the truth even when it feels harsh.
Coupes and convertibles post the lowest Efficiency & Range medians of any body type on MotorGPA — 16.8 points for coupes and 34.1 for convertibles, against 57.6 for sedans. Within them, the sports-car segments are lower still. The grade feels harsh, because a sports car is not bought for its fuel economy, and this guide is about why it is nonetheless correct and what it is actually saying.
The band a sports car is graded against
Measured criteria are normalized against a band for the vehicle’s segment — Graded within its segment: why a truck's MPG is not a sedan's explains the rule — and the segment is the registry’s body-type category. A sports car is a coupe or a convertible, and the framework’s gas band for combined fuel economy on coupes is 18–42 MPG — identical to the sedan band, because a coupe is a two-door car and most coupes are graded fairly by a car band. It is not a sports-car band. The framework has no sports-car segment; it has body types, and a Corvette shares one with a Civic coupe.

Three things compound. The economy itself is at the bottom of the car band. Annual fuel cost, which is inverted and scored against its own band, follows the economy down. And the fuel requirements criterion — a judged one that scores premium-only engines lower — is where nearly every performance engine loses points, because nearly every one requires premium. A sports car does not score badly on one criterion; it scores badly on the three that carry most of the subject, for reasons that are all the same reason.

Why the framework does not make an exception
It would be easy to add a sports-car segment with a band drawn from 14 to 24 MPG, and every Mustang would earn a B in Efficiency. It would also make the grade meaningless. The grade exists to answer “how efficient is this, for a car?”, and the honest answer for a sports car is: not very. Nobody buying one is misled by that. The buyer who would be misled is the one comparing a sporty coupe with a sedan and being told they are equally efficient because each is average for a segment drawn around it.
The framework’s exception is the one it does make, for powertrain class — because MPG and MPGe genuinely are different measurements, not different expectations. That distinction is the whole of Efficiency is graded within powertrain class.
The other side of the ledger
The same cars lead Driving Experience — coupes median 77.3 points there against 16.8 in Efficiency, and that mirror image is the framework working as intended. Efficiency does not feed the overall GPA; Driving Experience does. A sports car is graded as a sports car where it counts, on a subject row that says exactly what it costs to run, and the two grades side by side describe the trade a buyer is making more honestly than either would alone.
