Best family cars
Pick your family size and we’ll show what actually fits — then rank it on the three things a family car is really judged on: car seats and kids, family safety, and road-trip comfort. Seating comes from each vehicle’s published capacity, not a guess from its body type, so nothing appears under a size it can’t seat.
For a family of five the field is wide — 260 vehicles — and the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 leads it. Add a sixth seat and 199 of those drop out.

Best for a family of 5
How the field narrows
Almost everything on the road seats a family of five. The sixth seat is the cliff — and it is why the same vehicles win the smaller sizes: a car that seats seven is also, by definition, a candidate for a family of three.
Every vehicle that seats 5
260 vehicles qualify, ordered by family fit. Showing the top 24. The cards show each vehicle’s overall GPA, which is a different measure — a car can rank high here and mid-table overall.
How family fit is graded
Car seats & kids
LATCH anchor access and count, door aperture, and whether a rear-facing seat actually fits behind an adult driver — the things that decide whether school runs are a fight.
Family safety
NHTSA and IIHS results together with the driver aids that matter most with children aboard: blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear-seat reminders and automatic emergency braking.
Road-trip comfort
Second- and third-row space, climate control and charging where passengers actually sit, cargo room behind the last row in use, and cabin quietness over distance.
Seating capacity comes from each model year’s scored specification, so a vehicle only appears under a family size it genuinely seats. Full weights and bands are on the report card; sourcing rules are in how we grade. MotorGPA takes no payment for placement in any ranking.
