The verdict
A mixed-report luxury gt, strong on technology and held back by ownership.
The 2022 BMW 840i is an excellent long-distance grand tourer. Its silky 335-hp turbo six reaches 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, it has superb front seats and a quiet, beautifully finished cabin, and it comes loaded with standard tech, including a head-up display. Owning one is expensive: it stickered at $85,995 to about $94,500 as typically optioned, has burned roughly $65,600 over five years between depreciation and upkeep, drinks premium fuel at 23 MPG, and has never been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS. Buy it used, as a two-seat tourer with a rear parcel shelf, and it makes much more sense than it did new.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades above the middle of the scale.2.83B-
The volume 2022 840i xDrive Coupe uses BMW's B58 3.0L turbo inline-six at 335 hp; the M850i xDrive's 4.4L twin-turbo V8 tops the non-M range at 523 hp. MY2022 is a carry-over year within the second generation (G15, 2019 launch), ahead of the 2023 LCI refresh.
The B58 six delivers 368 lb-ft from low revs, giving strong low-end pull for a grand tourer; the V8 offers 553 lb-ft.
BMW quotes 4.7 s for the AWD 840i xDrive Coupe; third-party figures run as quick as 4.3 s, so the manufacturer claim is conservative. The M850i drops to about 3.6 s.
The B58 inline-six is among the smoothest, most responsive turbo sixes on sale, with negligible lag and early peak torque; the optional V8 is similarly effortless.
The ZF-sourced 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic with paddles shifts quickly and smoothly and rarely hunts.
Offered as RWD 840i or with rear-biased xDrive AWD (840i xDrive, standard on M850i xDrive); no low range, but a sophisticated performance AWD system with available M Sport differential.
Two gas engines (turbo I6 and twin-turbo V8) across RWD and AWD, plus the separate M8; no hybrid, PHEV or EV option.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the 8 Series's weakest categories.0.00F
The volume AWD 840i xDrive Coupe is EPA-rated 23 MPG combined for 2022; the RWD 840i manages 25 and the V8 M850i xDrive 20.
A heavy AWD luxury GT; the turbo six manages 20 MPG in EPA city testing.
Tall eighth gear helps on the highway, but weight and AWD cap it at 27 MPG.
An 18.0-gallon tank at the 23 MPG combined rating yields roughly 414 miles.
Premium fuel at 23 MPG combined puts annual fuel cost beyond the top of the coupe band.
Every 2022 8 Series Coupe trim is EPA-rated on premium fuel; no regular-fuel option.
3SafetyGrades below the middle of the scale.1.13D
NHTSA lists both 2022 8 Series Coupe variants (2 DR RWD and 2 DR AWD) but has crash-tested neither, so every frontal, side and rollover field reads 'Not Rated'. Under the framework, an untested vehicle records 0 stars.
The 2022 is the fourth model year of the G15 generation (launched for 2019) and the last before the 2023 LCI refresh. IIHS has never crash-tested it, so it has no Top Safety Pick or TSP+ and no published crashworthiness results. It is scored at the low end for untested vehicles, not as a known poor performer, because related CLAR-platform BMWs (5 Series, X5) test well.
The volume 840i comes standard with frontal collision warning, low-speed automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning. Active Blind Spot Detection is in the optional Driving Assistance Package. Adaptive cruise and lane keeping require the $1,700 Driving Assistance Professional Package, which is thin standard content for a GT costing $85K or more.
Camera and radar AEB with pedestrian detection is standard but described as low-speed (city) mitigation. IIHS has not evaluated the 8 Series' front crash prevention, so this score is inferred from BMW's shared sensor stack and discounted because there is no direct or night-pedestrian result.
Active Blind Spot Detection and rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the 840i through the Driving Assistance Package. Lane Change Assist and front cross-traffic alert need the Professional package. These features can be had on every trim, but the volume trim does not include them as standard.
Only alert-only lane departure warning is standard. Steering and Lane Keeping Assist (centering) comes with the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package. When fitted, BMW's centering is generally smooth on marked highways.
Full-speed Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go is part of the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package rather than standard. When fitted, it pairs with steering assist and traffic jam assist into a refined, well-integrated system, but leaving it optional on a flagship GT caps the score.
The only hands-off option is Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, part of Driving Assistance Professional. It allows hands-off driving up to about 40 mph on limited-access highways, so it covers congestion only and offers no full-speed hands-free capability.
Adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams are standard, and BMW Laserlight is available. The hardware is strong, but IIHS has never rated the 8 Series' headlights, so this score rests on equipment rather than measured performance.
Sightlines are typical of a long-hood GT coupe: low seating, wide C-pillars and a shallow rear window leave blind zones at the rear quarters. A rearview camera and park sensors are standard, and the 3D surround-view camera comes with the optional Driving Assistance Package.
The coupe is a 2+2 with LATCH anchors in both rear seats. Rear headroom and legroom are severely limited, and getting in means passing tilted front seats through long two-door openings. A rear-facing seat is barely practical, and no more than two child seats can fit.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.81C-
The 2022 840i xDrive Coupe (G15, second generation from MY2019; 2022 is the last pre-LCI year) is a 2+2 with two rear buckets, so it seats four.
The body is unchanged for 2022, and front headroom is generous for a low coupe.
Front legroom is ample for tall drivers.
The fastback roofline leaves adults brushing the rear glass.
Rear legroom is token 2+2 space, best suited to children or short trips.
The trunk is usefully sized for a two-door GT, though shallow under the sloping decklid.
Storage is conventional: a modest armrest bin, small door pockets and a rear seat that mostly serves as a parcel shelf. For 2022 the wireless charging tray was dropped from standard equipment because of the chip shortage.
For 2022 the now-standard M Sport package brings multi-function front seats with adjustable bolsters and thigh support, trimmed in standard extended Merino leather. They are excellent over long stints; the rear buckets suit children only.
Adaptive dampers give a compliant Comfort mode with tight body control. The run-flat tires on the now-standard M Sport wheels add sharpness over broken pavement.
Wind and road noise are well suppressed at highway speed, with some tire roar from the wide run-flats.
Dual-zone automatic climate, heated front seats and remote engine start are standard. Ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel and heated armrests come through packages.
5Cost of OwnershipThe 8 Series's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The entry 2022 8 Series Coupe is the rear-drive 840i (B58 3.0L turbo six), a carry-over year of the pre-facelift G15 generation. BMW trimmed the 2022 base price slightly from 2021's $88,000, but it is still far above the coupe band ceiling, so it scores at the bottom.
The volume build is the AWD 840i xDrive Coupe ($88,895 with destination). Common Executive, Premium and M Sport package content typically adds about $5–7k, which puts a typical sticker in the mid-$90ks.
Edmunds projects heavy maintenance and repair spending once BMW Ultimate Care lapses after year 3. It reflects the staggered 20-inch performance tires, large brakes and dealer labor rates, and lands well above the coupe band ceiling.
About 4.5 years on, KBB values a 2022 840i xDrive Coupe at ~51% of its original MSRP and a RWD 840i at ~48%. Projecting another half-year of depreciation gives roughly 47% at year 5, which is low-to-mid for the coupe band and typical of large luxury GTs.
BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles, which is par for German luxury brands.
BMW has no separate, longer powertrain warranty. The drivetrain is covered only by the 4-yr/50k NVLW, which is the band minimum.
BMW Ultimate Care covers factory-scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36,000 miles, and the car also comes with 4-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance and ConnectedDrive/BMW Assist trials. That beats Mercedes and Audi, which include little free maintenance, but there are no fuel or charging credits.
$94,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (47% retained, or about $44,415) leaves about $50,085 in depreciation. Add the projected $15,529 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $65,614 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the 8 Series's strongest categories.3.02B
The 2022 8 Series carries over the G15 generation launched in 2019; the LCI refresh arrived with the 2023 model year. J.D. Power rates the 2022 car's Quality & Reliability at 80/100 ('Average'), below the 85 it gave the 2023 car. Low sales volume leaves Consumer Reports with too little data for a model-specific verdict, so this sits at the top of the average band.
BMW logged 187 problems per 100 vehicles in J.D. Power's 2022 VDS, slightly better than the industry average, and ranked about 15th. It was roughly average again in the 2023 study. That is mid-pack: behind Lexus and Porsche, but clear of the bottom-third luxury brands.
Two NHTSA campaigns cover the 2022 8 Series coupe. 25V644 replaces the 840i's starter, which can overheat and catch fire. 26V525 fixes the driveshaft-to-rear-differential joint on 840i/840i xDrive, which can fail and cut drive power or let the car roll away. Both are shared across BMW models rather than specific to the 8 Series, and neither is a do-not-drive order. That is fewer campaigns than the 2021 or 2023 cars have, but both are fire or powertrain risks.
The volume 840i pairs BMW's B58 3.0L turbo inline-six with the ZF 8HP automatic, a well-regarded combination with a strong high-mileage record. The M850i's N63 twin-turbo V8 carries more oil-consumption and heat-load risk. The 840i's starter and driveshaft recalls keep this below the top tier.
BMW's flagship coupe uses extended Merino leather, CraftedClarity glass controls, and aluminum, wood or carbon trim. Reviewers rate the materials as fitting its roughly $87K price and competitive with Mercedes and Lexus GTs. The pre-LCI iDrive 7 hardware it shares with cheaper BMWs makes it feel slightly less exclusive.
The 8 Series is built at Dingolfing alongside the 5 and 7 Series, a plant with a strong J.D. Power plant-quality record. Reviewers report tight, consistent assembly, and owners report no widespread rattle or panel-gap problems.
BMW has roughly 340 U.S. dealers, with dense coverage in metro areas and thinner coverage in rural ones. Its J.D. Power service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands. Three years/36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance and a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty help early ownership.
Out of warranty, the 8 Series costs what a flagship BMW costs to keep. Many parts are 8-Series-specific and dealer-priced, including the adaptive suspension, Integral Active Steering, laser lights and body panels, and low U.S. volume limits the aftermarket. The B58 engine and the drivetrain parts it shares with other BMWs are widely available.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe 8 Series's best-graded category.3.33B+
The 2022 car is the last pre-LCI year and keeps the 10.25-inch central touchscreen. The 12.3-inch curved display arrived with the MY2023 refresh.
iDrive 7 is quick and logical, with touch, rotary controller, voice and gesture inputs, plus physical climate keys.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto (added for 2021) are standard and carry over for 2022.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant handles natural-language commands, and native navigation with live traffic is standard.
A 16-speaker, 600-watt Harman Kardon system is standard, and Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround is optional.
A 12.3-inch Live Cockpit Professional digital cluster is standard. It is crisp, though BMW's gauge graphics draw some criticism.
BMW Operating System 7 supports Remote Software Upgrade and map updates, but updates are mostly incremental rather than feature-adding.
The My BMW app covers remote lock/unlock, climate and engine start, vehicle finder and Remote 3D View. The NFC Digital Key is less seamless than later UWB systems.
USB ports including USB-C and a Wi-Fi hotspot remain, but wireless charging was removed from the standard features for 2022 because of the chip shortage. Rear-seat charging is limited.
Comfort Access keyless entry/ignition and remote engine start are standard. The NFC phone-as-key is available.
Front and rear Park Distance Control and a rearview camera are standard. Parking Assistant Plus (surround view, Reversing Assistant, automated parking) is optional.
A full-color head-up display stays standard on the 2022 840i. BMW's chip-shortage HUD deletions hit the German 3/4-Series and X3/X4 ordering guides, not the US 8 Series.
8Use-Case FitOne of the 8 Series's weakest categories.0.86F
This is a two-door 2+2 with 33.6 in of rear headroom and 29.5 in of legroom. Loading a car seat means folding a front seat and working through one long door, so it frustrates daily family use.
Forward collision warning with AEB and lane departure warning are standard. Blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise sit in optional packages, and the low-volume coupe has no NHTSA or IIHS crash ratings.
Front-seat comfort is excellent, but the rear is child-sized with no rear climate zone, and the 14.8 cu ft trunk limits luggage for four.
The smooth B58 six, ZF 8-speed and Comfort damper mode make traffic easy. The car's width, low seating and long doors are minor annoyances.
The 840i xDrive is rated around 24 mpg combined on premium fuel. Wide run-flat tires, brakes and dealer service carry flagship-luxury costs, though the 2022 price drop of about $3,000 helps slightly.
At about 191 in long and 75 in wide, with a turning circle of roughly 38 ft and limited rear-quarter visibility, the car is bulky in town. Standard front/rear sensors and a camera help.
There is no US tow rating, no hitch and minimal payload. It has no work role.
Extended Merino leather (standard for 2022), delicate trim and low-profile run-flats make it fragile for hard use.
There is no power outlet for tools, no roof rails, no hitch and no upfit ecosystem.
It is a natural grand tourer, with superb multi-function seats, a quiet cabin and a supple Comfort mode. About 29 mpg highway from a roughly 17-gallon tank gives close to 500 miles of range.
xDrive AWD handles snow and rain, but low ground clearance, the M Sport front fascia, and the lack of roof rails or a hitch keep it on pavement.
The 14.8 cu ft trunk fits weekend luggage, and the folding rear seatbacks add length. The narrow opening and lack of a hitch or roof rails limit bulky gear.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the 8 Series's strongest categories.3.22B+
Adaptive dampers, xDrive and the now-standard M Sport package give composed, grippy handling. The roughly 4,200 lb curb weight blunts agility compared with true sports coupes.
The steering is precise and nicely weighted through the standard M steering wheel, but it filters out most road feedback.
For 2022 the 840i gets the M Sport package's stronger brakes as standard, giving a firm, progressive pedal with good fade resistance for GT duty.
The B58 3.0L turbo I6 (335 hp, 368 lb-ft from 1,600 rpm) and ZF 8-speed are benchmark-smooth, with prompt tip-in and seamless shifts.
The inline-six is silky, near-silent at cruise and pleasant when worked. Some synthesized sound is used in Sport mode.
The long wheelbase and wide track give a large turning circle for a coupe.
The low seating position has wide power adjustment and well-placed controls, including the rotary iDrive and physical climate keys. Coupe rear-quarter visibility and long doors are the caveats.
It is a quick, characterful GT (0–60 mph in about 4.7 s) that is rewarding on a winding road, though it is a GT first and a sports car second.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.44C+
The 2022 840i Coupe is well equipped for a flagship. It comes with Vernasca leather power sport seats, Live Cockpit Professional (10.25-inch center screen plus digital cluster), a head-up display, Harman Kardon audio, adaptive LED headlights and Driving Assistant. Ventilated seats, Bowers & Wilkins audio and Driving Assistant Professional cost extra.
BMW cut 2022 coupe prices by about $2k versus 2021. For ~$86k–$89k the 840i delivers 335 hp, 0–60 mph in 4.7 s (xDrive) and a luxury GT cabin, undercutting Mercedes-AMG and Porsche alternatives. It is still pricier than a Lexus LC 500 and less sharp than a 911, so it is fair value rather than a bargain.
For 2022 the Coupe body offers three choices: 840i RWD, 840i xDrive and M850i xDrive, with two engines and either RWD or AWD. Convertible and Gran Coupe bodies plus the separate M8 widen the family. There is no manual, hybrid or EV.
US sales for the whole 8 Series family stayed in the low thousands in 2022 and kept declining from launch. The two-door Coupe is the smallest slice, behind the Gran Coupe, which makes it a niche flagship in a shrinking large-luxury-coupe segment.
BMW is a top-tier aspirational luxury brand with a deep enthusiast base, and the 8 Series badge carries flagship status and E31 heritage. In this price band its pull is slightly below the Porsche 911's.
MY2022 sold during the worst of the semiconductor shortage, when industry-wide inventory was tight and luxury transactions ran near sticker. As a slow-moving flagship the 8 Series still saw some BMW Financial Services lease support and modest dealer discounts, but less than in 2021 or 2023.
MY2022 is the fourth and final pre-facelift year of the G15 generation that debuted for MY2019. The platform is current, but the refresh (12.3-inch screen, revised grille) was announced in early 2022 for MY2023, so 2022 buyers got the outgoing look and tech.
Reviewers praise the smooth B58 six, the refined cabin and its long-distance GT comfort. They criticize the weight, the steering feel compared with the 911, and the price. It has not appeared on 10Best or won major comparison tests.
