The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size suv, strong on value and held back by efficiency.

The 2020 Telluride was the launch year of the three-row SUV that reset the class, with real room in all three rows, a long list of standard safety gear and a near-luxury cabin for about $40,000 in the volume EX AWD. Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty still covers original owners through 2029. The trade-offs are a thirsty 291-hp V6 (21 MPG combined, about $3,200 a year in fuel), halogen headlights that IIHS rates Poor on every trim but the SX, and a launch-year record of seven recall campaigns, including fire-risk recalls with park-outside advisories. Buy one with every recall confirmed done, and an SX if you can find one.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Telluride's weakest categories.1.26D
Horsepower
291 hp @ 6,000 rpm (3.8L V6, every trim)
35/100
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 launch year of the first-generation Telluride uses a single 3.8L Lambda II GDI V6 on all four trims (LX, S, EX, SX), so the volume trim and range max are the same 291 hp.

Torque
262 lb-ft @ 5,200 rpm
36/100
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Peak torque arrives high at 5,200 rpm, typical of a naturally aspirated V6 and behind turbocharged rivals that peak low in the rev range.

0–60 mph time
≈7.3 s (AWD; 2020 instrumented tests 6.9–7.5 s)
37/100
#11 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2020 instrumented tests range 6.9–7.5 seconds by trim and tester; ~7.3 s is adequate for a three-row family SUV but mid-pack against turbo rivals.

Powertrain refinement72
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The naturally aspirated V6 is smooth and lag-free with linear throttle response, but needs revs for real thrust and grows vocal near redline or when fully loaded.

Transmission behavior74
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 8-speed torque-converter automatic shifts smoothly and picks gears sensibly with no CVT drone or hunting, though kickdowns for passing can be a beat slow.

Max towing capacity
5,000 lbs (all trims, properly equipped)
57/100
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Every 2020 trim is rated to tow 5,000 lbs — strong for a unibody three-row; the 5,500-lb X-Line/X-Pro rating did not arrive until 2023.

AWD/4WD availability74
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Active On-Demand AWD is available on every trim (LX through SX) with an AWD Lock and a Snow mode, plus optional self-leveling rear suspension — capable for a unibody crossover, but no low range and no Mud/Sand terrain modes yet.

Off-road capability48
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

With about 8 in of ground clearance, AWD Lock, Snow mode and Downhill Brake Control it handles dirt roads and snow, but there is no off-road trim, skid plating, lockers or low range in 2020.

Powertrain lineup breadth22
#14 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A single naturally aspirated 3.8L V6 with an 8-speed automatic is the only powertrain on every trim — no turbo, hybrid, PHEV or EV option.

NHTSA rates the launch-year 2020 Telluride 5 stars overall in both FWD and AWD form; the 4-star frontal and rollover sub-ratings are typical of a tall three-row SUV.

The 2020 Telluride earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick (not TSP+, held back by its headlights) with Good ratings in every test of that era's criteria. The later, tougher updated side test, applied to 2020–25 models after the fact, came back Marginal.

Standard ADAS suite breadth85
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Kia Drive Wise is standard on every trim, the base LX included: forward collision-avoidance with pedestrian detection, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic systems, lane keeping and lane following, driver attention warning, Safe Exit Assist and Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go. Only Highway Driving Assist (EX/SX), the surround camera and Blind-Spot View Monitor are trim-gated.

Automatic emergency braking performance76
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates both the vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime pedestrian front crash prevention Superior. No nighttime pedestrian result exists for this model year, which keeps it below the top band.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage84
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic systems are standard from the LX and intervene with braking rather than only warning. Safe Exit Assist and rear automatic braking add to that, and the SX adds the Blind-Spot View Monitor camera. There is no trailer-aware coverage.

Lane keeping & centering78
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Following Assist (centering) are standard on all trims. Reviewers describe them as smooth on well-marked highways but less sure on faded lines.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist82
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Full-speed Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go is standard on every trim, and Highway Driving Assist (navigation-aware speed and integrated centering) is standard from the EX. Reviewers call it smooth, but it is still a hands-on system.

Hands-free driving availability10
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving is offered on any 2020 Telluride trim; Highway Driving Assist requires hands on the wheel.

Headlight performance30
#11 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

This is the 2020 Telluride's main safety weakness. The halogen projector lamps on the LX, S and EX are rated Poor by IIHS, and only the SX's LED projectors with high-beam assist reach Acceptable. That gap is why the car got TSP rather than TSP+. The 2023 refresh fixed it.

Outward visibility82
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The upright, boxy body with large side glass and a near-vertical tailgate gives good sightlines for a three-row SUV. Surround View Monitor and Blind-Spot View Monitor are reserved for the SX, so volume trims rely on mirrors and a rear camera.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability66
#8 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the 2020–22 LATCH hardware only Acceptable overall, with some positions Marginal because the anchors are deep. Wide rear doors and roomy second and third rows still make it practical to fit several car seats.

4Space & ComfortGrades above the middle of the scale.3.18B
Seating capacity
8 seats (LX/EX bench); 7 with second-row captain's chairs on S and SX (optional on EX)
100/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The volume EX trim seats eight with the standard second-row 60/40 bench; captain's chairs drop capacity to seven.

Front headroom
40.9 in without sunroof (39.5 in with sunroof, standard EX/S/SX)
78/100
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Generous front headroom without a sunroof; the sunroof that EX, S and SX carry standard trims it to 39.5 in.

Front legroom
41.4 in (all trims)
31/100
#11 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is merely average for a mid-size SUV.

Rear headroom
40.2 in second row (38.8 in with SX dual sunroof); 38.1 in third row
100/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Second-row headroom is at the top of the class on the volume trims.

Rear legroom
42.4 in second row; 31.4 in third row
100/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Limousine-like second-row legroom for the segment.

Third-row usability74
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

One of the roomier third rows in the class with one-touch second-row slide/fold access, but adults still sit knees-up on long trips.

Cargo/trunk volume
46.0 cu ft behind second row (21.0 cu ft behind third row)
38/100
#9 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Competitive three-row figures; 21 cu ft behind the third row is class-leading territory even though the second-row figure scores mid-band.

Max cargo volume
87.0 cu ft (all rear seats folded)
71/100
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Large maximum cargo hold for a mid-size three-row.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions70
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Practical everyday storage — big console box, cargo-side cupholders, seatback hooks, underfloor bin and cargo-area second-row fold buttons — but nothing segment-redefining; the 110V inverter is a SX-only option.

Seat comfort80
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Front seats are widely praised as supportive with power adjustment and ventilation on EX; second row is roomy and comfortable, though heated/ventilated second-row seats are SX-only options.

Ride quality80
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A cushioned, well-controlled ride that reviewers say feels more premium than the price; 20-in wheels on S/SX add some firmness and self-leveling rear suspension is optional.

Cabin quietness76
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Quiet at highway speed for the segment with acoustic windshield standard and acoustic front door glass on EX/SX; the V6 gets vocal when pushed.

Climate & comfort features76
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

EX brings heated and ventilated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate with rear A/C; heated wheel is optional and heated/ventilated second-row seats are confined to the SX Prestige package.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Telluride's strongest categories.3.20B+
Base MSRP
$33,060 (LX FWD $31,890 + $1,170 destination)
80/100
#12 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The LX FWD opened the launch-year 2020 Telluride well below most three-row mid-size rivals, despite its large footprint and standard V6.

Volume-Trim Price
$40,460 (EX AWD incl. destination); range $33,060 LX FWD to ~$48,000 SX AWD with Prestige Package
67/100
#13 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Telluride volume concentrated in the EX/SX band with a high AWD take-rate, so EX AWD is used as the representative configuration. The MSRP was retrieved from Kia, but picking EX AWD as the volume trim is a judgement call.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$4,400 over 5 years (estimates range ~$2,800 CarEdge to ~$5,500+ class data)
78/100
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The naturally aspirated 3.8L V6 and conventional 8-speed automatic carry no turbo or hybrid hardware, and Kia's long warranty absorbs most early repairs. The figure is set slightly above the refreshed-year estimate because launch-year 2020 cars drew several recalls and windshield-cracking complaints.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~60% of MSRP retained at 5 years (estimates ~49–65%)
67/100
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2020 Tellurides benefited from launch-year scarcity and the 2021–2022 used-market spike, and five-year-old examples still trade near 60% of original sticker. That is well above the mid-size SUV norm, although the 2027 redesign adds mild pressure on first-generation residuals.

Basic warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
100/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Kia's 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty applies to the 2020 Telluride and beats the 3 yr/36,000 mi offered by most rivals.

Powertrain warranty
10 yr / 100,000 mi powertrain (original owner; 5 yr/60,000 mi for subsequent owners)
100/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage is the segment benchmark, though it drops to 5 yr/60,000 mi for second owners.

Complimentary maintenance & perks55
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Kia included no complimentary scheduled maintenance in the US for 2020, unlike the sibling Hyundai Palisade (3 yr/36,000 mi) or the Toyota Highlander (ToyotaCare). The Telluride does get 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance and a UVO connected-services trial, which puts it in the roadside-only band.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$20,584 (≈$16,184 depreciation + $4,400 maintenance)
76/100
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

$40,460 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (60% retained, or about $24,276) leaves about $16,184 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,400 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $20,584 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.41C+
Predicted reliability58
#10 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2020 was the Telluride's launch year. J.D. Power rates its quality and reliability only 'Average' (79/100), and Consumer Reports rates it less reliable than other cars from its model year. Owners mainly report problems with electrical accessories and infotainment, which is typical of a first-year model and puts it in the lower part of the mixed-signals band.

Brand reliability track record74
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Around 2020, Kia placed among the top mass-market brands in J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study (it ranked #1 in 2020 IQS) and in the upper-middle of the J.D. Power VDS and Consumer Reports brand reliability rankings. It was not consistently top-5 on long-term dependability, and Hyundai/Kia carry a heavy recall load, so it sits in the upper part of the mid-pack band.

Recall & TSB history38
#14 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Seven NHTSA campaigns cover the 2020 model year. Three are fire-risk recalls with park-outside advisories: the tow-hitch harness and two campaigns on the front power-seat motor, the second needed because the first remedy did not hold. There are also two FMVSS non-compliances on child-seat belt locking and trailer brake lights under Smart Cruise Control, a high-beam failure recall and a driveshaft-engagement roll-away recall. Repeated fire and safety-system campaigns put it in the 'major or repeated recalls' band.

Powertrain durability reputation76
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 3.8L Lambda II V6 (291 hp) is naturally aspirated and has no systemic failure pattern like the Theta II four-cylinders had. It is paired with Kia's 8-speed automatic, a pairing that was new in 2020 and later accumulated a clean high-mileage record across the Telluride and Palisade. In the 2020 launch year that record was still unproven, and owners raised minor shift-quality complaints, so it scores a little below the later model years.

Interior material quality78
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 Telluride won both World Car of the Year and MotorTrend SUV of the Year, with reviewers repeatedly singling out a near-luxury cabin for the price. The volume EX/S trims use more hard plastic low in the cabin and SynTex rather than Nappa leather, so it scores at the top of the competitive band rather than as class-leading.

Fit & finish64
#11 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Assembly at Kia Georgia (West Point) is generally solid. However, the launch year produced widespread owner complaints about windshields cracking spontaneously, and it had electrical-accessory glitches and a 2020-only high-beam failure recall. That puts it in the lower-middle of the 'generally solid with scattered complaints' band.

Dealer & service network78
#8 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Kia has roughly 750–775 US dealers, which gives practical nationwide coverage. Its service satisfaction is around the mass-market average, and the network is thinner than Toyota's, Ford's or Chevrolet's.

Parts availability & repair cost78
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The Telluride is a high-volume three-row SUV whose powertrain is shared with the Palisade, so parts are plentiful and reasonably priced. Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty covers original owners through 2029. Aftermarket support is good but thinner than for domestic SUVs, and replacing the windshield (a common need on the 2020) adds cost.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Telluride's weakest categories.1.70C-
Touchscreen size
10.25 in on EX and SX (8.0 in on LX and S)
38/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The volume EX gets the 10.25-in navigation screen; base LX and S make do with an 8-in display. The 12.3-in screen arrives only with the 2023 refresh.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness72
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Kia's UVO interface is quick, logically laid out and backed by physical knobs and climate buttons; reviewers praise its ease of use, though graphics are basic next to the later 12.3-in system.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto45
#10 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every trim but wired only; no wireless projection is offered on the 2020 model.

Voice control & native navigation62
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

EX and SX carry built-in navigation with voice recognition; LX/S rely on phone projection. Functional but most owners use CarPlay/Android Auto.

Audio system quality62
#9 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Volume trims get a basic six-speaker system; the 10-speaker Harman Kardon surround system is reserved for the SX.

Digital instrument cluster42
#8 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

LX/S/EX use analog gauges with a 3.5-in segment display; only SX gets a 7-in color TFT center screen between analog dials. No full-digital cluster until the 2023 refresh.

OTA update capability32
#9 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

No over-the-air software updates on the 2020 model; navigation map and firmware updates are via USB download or the dealer.

Companion app & remote functions56
#8 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

UVO link provides remote start/climate, lock and vehicle locate, free for the first year but subscription-gated afterward; no phone-as-key.

Charging ports & device power76
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

USB charging ports reach all three rows on every trim, with three 12V outlets; wireless charging on EX/SX and a 110V inverter as an SX option. Ports are USB-A, not USB-C.

Keyless & remote access70
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Smart key with push-button start is standard on every trim and the hands-free power liftgate comes on EX/SX; remote start is app-based through UVO and there is no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids66
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Rear camera with dynamic guidelines and rear parking sensors are standard; surround view, Blind-Spot View Monitor and front sensors are SX-only.

Head-up display availability55
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A head-up display is offered only as an option on the top SX trim.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.60C+
Kid & car-seat practicality84
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Wide rear doors, one-touch second-row slide/fold, a genuinely usable third row and 21 cu ft behind it make daily family logistics easy; IIHS LATCH rating is only Acceptable.

Family safety package84
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

IIHS Top Safety Pick and NHTSA 5-star overall, with forward AEB, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic avoidance, lane centering, Stop & Go cruise, Safe Exit Assist and ultrasonic Rear Occupant Alert standard even on the LX.

Family road-trip comfort82
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Spacious second and third rows, USB ports in every row, rear A/C, Driver Talk intercom and Quiet Mode on EX/SX and usable cargo behind the third row make it an excellent family tourer.

Daily driving ease74
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Smooth V6 and 8-speed, a comfortable ride and standard Stop & Go adaptive cruise ease traffic duty; its size and slowish steering are the only daily annoyances.

Commuting cost efficiency50
#6 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Average-to-thirsty for a three-row V6 crossover with no hybrid option, though it runs on regular fuel.

Parking & maneuverability52
#11 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A large footprint and 38.8-ft turning circle demand care in tight lots; the boxy shape gives good sightlines, but surround view and front sensors are SX-only.

Work capability58
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A 5,000-lb tow rating, optional self-leveling rear suspension and 87 cu ft of cargo space handle light-to-moderate duty for a crossover.

Durability for work duty58
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Unibody family crossover with a proven Lambda V6, but first-year build had several recalls and the leather/light interiors aren't work-oriented.

Jobsite & upfit practicality45
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Three 12V outlets, roof rails on EX and up and a dealer tow hitch are the extent of it; the 110V inverter is an SX option and there's no work-focused upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range78
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Quiet, comfortable highway cruiser with Highway Driving Assist on EX/SX and ~395 miles of range; supportive seats make long days easy.

Outdoor & adventure capability64
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Available AWD with a lock mode and snow mode, 8.0 in of ground clearance, roof rails and a 5,000-lb tow rating handle gravel roads and toys; no off-road trim until the 2023 X-Pro.

Gear & luggage flexibility74
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Split-folding second and third rows with cargo-area release buttons, roof rails and an underfloor bin swallow bulky gear; 87 cu ft max is competitive in the class.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.40C+
10Value & Market PositionThe Telluride's best-graded category.3.40B+
Standard equipment generosity86
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Even the $33k LX came with the 291-hp V6, three rows, an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and the full Drive Wise suite (forward collision avoidance, blind-spot, lane keeping, driver attention warning, Safe Exit Assist). Rivals like the Highlander and Pilot charged several thousand dollars more to match that kit.

Feature value per dollar90
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A fully loaded SX AWD with the Prestige Package stayed under about $48k while offering near-luxury Nappa leather, HUD and a premium cabin. Reviewers widely called it the value benchmark of the three-row class.

Trim & configuration breadth62
#15 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

There were four well-spaced trims (LX, S, EX, SX), each with FWD or AWD, plus 7- or 8-seat layouts and a few packages. The single V6 powertrain with no hybrid and no off-road trim (X-Line/X-Pro arrived in 2023) limited range.

Sales popularity & market acceptance82
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The Telluride was a fast riser in its launch year, selling out its West Point production and drawing waitlists. Its volume trailed the Explorer and Highlander only because supply was capped at a single plant.

Brand desirability & image62
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

In 2020 Kia was still a mainstream value brand still shaking off its budget image. The Telluride itself had a strong halo that lifted perception and drove conquest buyers from Toyota, Honda and Ford.

Deals & incentive availability28
#18 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Demand outstripped supply from launch, so dealer markups over MSRP were common in 2019–2020 and factory incentives were minimal. Buyers had little room to negotiate.

Model freshness95
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

MY2020 was the Telluride's debut year, an all-new first-generation model with current platform tech, and its first refresh did not come until MY2023.

Critical reception & awards96
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

It swept the major honors and won three-row comparison tests against the Highlander, Explorer, Pilot and Atlas, a near-universal consensus pick of the class.
