The verdict
A struggling compact luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The 2019 GLC is one of the best-built, quietest compact luxury SUVs of its era, with a 5-star NHTSA rating, an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a cabin reviewers rank near the top of the class. It is also the last year before the 2020 facelift, so it carries the older COMAND infotainment with no touchscreen, analog gauges and paid-option CarPlay. Many of the driver aids that rivals made standard cost extra here too. A well-optioned used example is a comfortable, upscale bargain, but plan for premium fuel (about $3,350 a year), a short 4-year/50,000-mile warranty and German-luxury repair bills.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades below the middle of the scale.1.40D
The volume GLC 300 4MATIC carries the 241-hp 2.0-liter turbo four in its last pre-facelift year (2020 raised it to 255 hp). AMG 43/63 variants push the range to 503 hp.
Peak torque arrives very low in the rev range, giving strong part-throttle shove for a four-cylinder.
Manufacturer-quoted 6.4 s for the 4MATIC volume trim is mid-pack for the compact luxury class.
The 2.0T delivers ample low-end torque with little lag, but reviewers noted it sounds gruff and less refined than the cabin's luxury level suggests, and the stop/start is abrupt.
The 9G-Tronic 9-speed shifts smoothly in normal driving but can be slow to kick down from tall gears and occasionally hesitates from a stop.
Typical compact-luxury rating, on par with rivals like the Q5 (4,400 lbs is the class top).
4MATIC AWD is optional on GLC 300 and standard on GLC 350e and all AMG models; the AMG 63 gets a variable torque-split 4MATIC+. No low range.
Road-biased crossover with modest clearance; the European Off-Road Engineering package was not offered in the US, leaving Dynamic Select modes and optional Air Body Control as the only aids.
Unusually broad for 2019: 2.0T in RWD or AWD, a GLC 350e plug-in hybrid, the twin-turbo V6 AMG 43, and the twin-turbo V8 AMG 63/63 S.
2Efficiency & RangeThe GLC's lowest-graded category.0.48F
EPA combined figure for the volume 4MATIC trim is average for a gas compact luxury SUV.
EPA city rating for the volume trim.
EPA highway rating for the volume trim.
Computed from the 17.4-gallon tank and EPA combined rating; EPA publishes no range for gas vehicles.
EPA's annual fuel cost reflects premium fuel at current national prices.
Premium unleaded is required on the GLC 300 and every other 2019 GLC variant.
3SafetyThe GLC's best-graded category.2.47C+
NHTSA rated the 2019 GLC 5 stars overall, with 5 stars each for frontal, side and side pole. Rollover is 4 stars, at an 18.4–18.6% risk.
The 2019 GLC earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test including passenger-side small overlap. The award applies only to cars with the Advanced Lighting package headlights.
On the pre-facelift 2019 GLC 300, standard driver assistance is limited to Collision Prevention Assist Plus (low-speed autonomous braking) and Attention Assist. Blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning and prevention, and adaptive cruise are all optional, which is thin for a luxury SUV.
The standard Collision Prevention Assist Plus rates Superior in the IIHS vehicle-to-vehicle test, avoiding collisions at both 12 and 25 mph. The optional Pre-Safe Brake with Pedestrian Recognition also rates Superior, but there is no IIHS pedestrian or nighttime result for this model year.
Blind Spot Assist is optional on the 2019 GLC 300, not standard. Active Blind Spot Assist with braking intervention and rear cross-traffic alert come only with the optional Driver Assistance Package.
Lane departure warning and Active Lane Keeping Assist are optional, and Steering Pilot lane centering comes only in the Driver Assistance Package. It works reasonably well when fitted, but a GLC without the package has no lane assistance at all.
DISTRONIC PLUS adaptive cruise with stop-and-go and Steering Pilot is smooth and well reviewed. It is an expensive option on the GLC 300, and it lacks the route-based speed adaptation the 2020 facelift added.
The 2019 GLC offers no hands-free highway system; Steering Pilot requires the driver's hands on the wheel. Mercedes' Drive Pilot was never offered on the GLC.
The base GLC 300's halogen reflector headlights rate Marginal. The optional LED projectors rate Acceptable, and only the Advanced Lighting package's curve-adaptive LEDs with high-beam assist rate Good.
The upright seating position gives good forward sightlines, but thick rear pillars limit the view over the rear three-quarters. A rearview camera is standard; the surround-view camera is optional.
IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Acceptable for ease of use. There are two full LATCH positions and a tether-only center seat, and the compact rear bench makes fitting several seats tight.
4Space & ComfortOne of the GLC's weakest categories.0.80F
The 2019 GLC is the pre-facelift first-generation (X253) SUV, sold only as a two-row, five-passenger body.
Mercedes' 2019 spec release lists 37.8 in of front headroom, but its 2020 sheet for the same X253 body lists 39.6 in, so the two years seem to use different measurement methods. The 2019 sheet is the year-specific source.
Front legroom is a little below the class average and the same as on the 2020 facelift.
The upright roofline leaves good rear headroom for the class.
On paper, rear legroom is competitive with the BMW X3 and Audi Q5, but the fixed, upright rear backrest makes the back seat feel tighter than the number suggests.
There is no third row. That is normal for a compact luxury SUV but scores at the bottom of this item.
Cargo space behind the rear seats is small for the class and trails the BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and Acura RDX.
Maximum cargo volume is mid-pack to slightly below average among compact luxury rivals.
Everyday storage is competitive: a covered console bin, door pockets, a power liftgate and a 40/20/40 folding rear seat. Wireless charging is optional, the ports are older USB-A, and there are no standout storage tricks.
The power front seats are supportive, though owners are split on their comfort. The rear bench has an upright backrest that doesn't recline.
On the standard steel springs the ride is smooth and well isolated, with some loose body control over highway dips. Optional Air Body Control helps, while large optional wheels add firmness.
Wind and road noise are well suppressed at highway speed. The M274 four-cylinder gets coarse under hard acceleration.
Heated front seats and dual-zone climate are standard for 2019. Ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats are paid options.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the GLC's weakest categories.0.94F
2019 is the last pre-facelift year of the first-generation X253 GLC. The SUV range starts with the rear-drive GLC 300 at $40,700 before destination, and 4MATIC adds $2,000.
Most US buyers chose the GLC 300 4MATIC ($42,700 + $995 destination). They typically added the Premium package, which in 2019 also carried smartphone integration because it was not yet standard, and often driver-assistance options. That puts a typically equipped sticker at about $48k–49k.
German-luxury dealer service (alternating Service A/B, brake fluid, filters) costs more than at mainstream brands and Lexus. The 2019 car uses the M274 2.0T with the 9G-Tronic, so the same-generation estimates apply.
Industry 5-year estimates put the GLC's loss at about 47.5–52%, close to the compact luxury SUV segment average and behind Lexus and Porsche rivals. The conservative 48% figure is used.
Mercedes-Benz USA's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 48 months or 50,000 miles, typical for a German luxury brand.
Mercedes has no separate, longer powertrain warranty, so the engine and transmission are covered only by the 4-yr/50k-mi basic warranty. Genesis (10/100), Lexus (6/70) and Cadillac (6/70) all offer longer powertrain coverage.
Scheduled maintenance is not included; Mercedes sells it as Prepaid Maintenance packages, whereas BMW, Volvo and Genesis include it. Included perks are limited to roadside assistance for the warranty term and a Mercedes me connect trial.
$48,700 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (48% retained, or about $23,376) leaves about $25,324 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $31,324 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.15C
2019 is the last pre-facelift year of the first-generation (X253) GLC, a mature fourth model year, so early-production bugs had mostly been worked out. Owner surveys put it around average for the class: comfortably ahead of the Discovery Sport and Stelvio, but short of Lexus.
Mercedes-Benz has sat in the bottom third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings for years, and below the industry average in J.D. Power's dependability study. Electronics and infotainment are recurring weak spots.
The 2019 GLC drew a heavy recall load of about 18 campaigns. Two are GLC-specific losses of power-steering assist, and others cover an unbolted driver airbag module, a fuel-rail leak and a mis-bonded roof panel. Many of the rest are fleet-wide eCall or rear-camera software fixes, and none carries a do-not-drive advisory.
The US GLC 300 used the M274 2.0L turbo-4 (241 hp) with the 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic. Both were widely used across the C, E and GLC lines by 2019 and have no systemic failure pattern. Owners do report oil leaks and occasional turbo or timing-chain issues at higher mileage. This is the pre-48V setup, so it avoids the 2020 M264 EQ Boost's launch recalls.
Reviewers widely praised the X253 cabin as among the richest in the compact luxury class, with broad soft-touch coverage, open-pore wood, metal switchgear and turbine-style vents. The 2019 car lacks the later 12.3-inch digital cockpit and MBUX, and its COMAND touchpad and controller drew criticism.
The mature X253 body is generally tightly assembled with solid perceived quality. Several 2019 campaigns, though, trace to assembly defects: an unbolted airbag module, a power-steering connector and roof-panel bonding.
Mercedes-Benz USA has about 380 dealers, giving dense metro coverage and reasonable reach elsewhere. Loaners are common, and service satisfaction sits around the luxury-segment average.
Parts and labor cost well above mainstream brands, and electronics work often needs dealer diagnostics. The long-running X253 platform and the widely shared M274 engine have broad aftermarket and OEM-supplier parts coverage.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.96F
The pre-facelift system uses a 7-in freestanding display, with an 8.4-in screen optional. Neither is touch-sensitive; the 10.25-in MBUX touchscreen arrived only with the 2020 facelift.
The pre-MBUX COMAND/Audio 20 system is driven by a console rotary knob with a touchpad on top. Its deep menus feel slow and dated next to the 2019 Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60, and it has no touchscreen.
Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were a paid option for 2019, in the Smartphone Integration Package. They became standard only for 2020, and wireless projection was not offered.
COMAND navigation with the 8.4-in screen is optional. Voice control takes rigid commands; the natural-language 'Hey Mercedes' assistant came only with the 2020 facelift.
The base system is adequate, and the optional Burmester surround system is well regarded.
The 2019 GLC has analog gauges with a 5.5-in center display. The 12.3-in digital cockpit became available only with the 2020 facelift.
The COMAND-era system has no meaningful over-the-air software capability; map updates are done by the dealer or from media.
The Mercedes me connect app covers remote lock/unlock, vehicle finder, status and remote start, with a trial of the connected services. It needs a subscription after that, and there is no phone-as-key.
The ports are older USB-A, since USB-C arrived with the 2020 facelift. Wireless charging is optional, and there is no AC outlet.
Push-button start and a power liftgate are standard. Passive KEYLESS-GO entry and hands-free access are in the optional Premium Package.
A rear camera is standard. The surround-view camera and Active Parking Assist are optional.
A head-up display is available as an option on the GLC 300 but isn't standard.
8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.68D
LATCH is rated Acceptable and rear headroom and legroom are adequate. The back seat is upright, and the 19.4 cu ft hold fills quickly with a stroller and groceries.
The GLC has a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with all-Good crash scores, and standard automatic emergency braking rated Superior. Blind-spot monitoring, the award-qualifying headlights and lane keeping all cost extra.
The cabin is quiet and the front seats are comfortable. The rear seatback is upright, luggage space with all seats occupied is modest, and rear heated seats are optional.
The GLC is smooth and easy in traffic, and 273 lb-ft from 1,300 rpm makes for relaxed pulling. Some stop-start shudder, a hesitant 9-speed kickdown and the dated COMAND controls are the annoyances.
At 24 MPG combined on premium fuel, commuting costs are about average for a gas compact luxury SUV.
The footprint is compact and the turning circle is 38.7 ft. Thick rear pillars limit the view, and the surround camera and parking assist are optional.
A modest tow rating with the optional hitch and a small cargo hold cover light-trailer duty at most.
This is a luxury SUV with no fleet or work pedigree, and repair costs under hard use are high.
There are cargo tie-downs and an optional factory hitch, but no onboard AC power or work-oriented features.
It is a quiet, smooth highway cruiser with about 418 miles of range. DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Pilot is optional, and rear passengers sit upright.
4MATIC AWD on the volume trim, an Off-Road drive mode and modest towing handle gravel roads and bike racks. Ground clearance is modest, and there is no underbody protection.
The 40/20/40 rear seat lets long items ride between two passengers, and roof rails and a hitch are available. Overall volume is middling, at 19.4–56.5 cu ft.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the GLC's strongest categories.2.30C+
The GLC 300 is secure and tuned for comfort, with some body roll on the steel suspension. It is less engaging than the BMW X3 or Porsche Macan; the AMG 43 and 63 handle far better.
The steering is light and accurate enough for daily driving, but numb, with little road feel.
Braking is strong and predictable for the class. The pedal is softer than on the sportier German rivals.
The M274 2.0T is torquey from 1,300 rpm, and the 9G-TRONIC shifts smoothly. The stop-start can shudder, and the transmission is sometimes slow to kick down in Comfort mode.
It is quiet at cruise, but the four-cylinder sounds coarse when worked and has more vibration than the best rival fours.
The turning circle is about average for a compact luxury SUV.
The driving position is commanding with good seat adjustment and forward visibility. The column-mounted gear selector and the knob-and-touchpad COMAND controls take learning, and the rear pillars block some of the view.
The GLC 300 is pleasant and polished but forgettable. The AMG GLC 43 and 63 provide the excitement.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the GLC's strongest categories.2.31C+
The 2019 GLC 300 came standard with the COMAND-era 7-in display and controller, power front seats, dual-zone climate, a power liftgate and Active Brake Assist. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Blind Spot Assist, heated seats, the larger 10.25-in screen, adaptive cruise and leather were all extra-cost options, and rivals were increasingly making several of these standard. The 2020 facelift moved MBUX and smartphone integration into standard equipment.
At $41,695 to start, the GLC 300 was priced in line with the X3 and Q5, and for that money it delivered a richly finished cabin and a smooth 241-hp 2.0T. Building a well-equipped example takes several packages, which pushes a typical 4MATIC to about $48–49k for what was by 2019 an aging infotainment and driver-assist suite.
The 2019 US GLC SUV spanned the GLC 300 in RWD or 4MATIC form, the GLC 350e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid, the AMG GLC 43 and the AMG GLC 63/63 S, plus a separate GLC Coupe body. That gives buyers a wide price and powertrain range from about $41k to over $75k.
2019 was the GLC's best US year at about 73,655 units, up from about 69,729 in 2018, and it led Mercedes-Benz USA's model lineup. That ranks it among the top sellers in the compact luxury SUV class.
Mercedes-Benz is among the most aspirational premium brands, with AMG adding a performance halo. That supports demand and residuals, though its reliability reputation is middling.
In 2019 inventory was ample, before the pandemic and the chip shortage, and Mercedes ran its usual GLC lease and APR programs. Dealers had to clear pre-facelift stock once the refreshed 2020 car was revealed, so modest to meaningful discounts were common.
2019 is the fourth US model year of the first-generation X253 (launched for 2016) and a carry-over year. The refreshed 2020 model, with MBUX, a new engine and a digital cockpit, was revealed in March 2019, so 2019 buyers got pre-facelift tech that was superseded months later.
Reviewers praised the GLC for its interior quality, its quiet, composed ride and its overall refinement, and counted it among the class's better all-rounders. Comparison tests usually favored the BMW X3 or Porsche Macan, and the pre-MBUX COMAND infotainment drew criticism.
