The verdict

A struggling mid-size sedan, strong on safety and held back by performance.

The 2020 Altima is the mid-size sedan for the long commute and the snowy driveway: 32 MPG combined, 518 miles of range on a tank, ProPILOT Assist stop-and-go cruise standard on the $28,775 SV, and — uniquely in this class — all-wheel drive for a flat $1,350 on any 2.5-liter grade. What you give up is everything that makes a car feel special: 188 hp and roughly 7.8 seconds to 60 through a CVT, 35.2 inches of rear legroom (five less than an Accord), and no hybrid option at all. As a used buy it is a genuinely cheap way into a five-star-safety sedan, because it already gave back about half its price in depreciation — but the 2020 model year carries six recall campaigns and a live CVT class action naming 2019–2020 cars, and the transmission came off its 60,000-mile warranty years ago. Buy one for what it does, not for what it will be worth.

Jump to scores

Strengths

  • All-wheel drive for $1,350 — something no Accord or Camry offered
  • A genuinely cheap highway car
  • Highway driver assist you usually have to pay extra for

What holds it back

  • Slow, and it sounds like it
  • The back seat is the smallest in the class
  • Six recalls and an open CVT lawsuit on this model year

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe Altima's lowest-graded category.0.46F
Horsepower
188 hp @ 6,000 rpm (2.5L PR25DD, FWD — volume SV); 182 hp with AWD; 248 hp from the 2.0L VC-Turbo on SR and Platinum FWD (premium fuel)
15/100
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The volume 2.5 SV FWD grade makes 188 hp from the naturally aspirated PR25DD four, carried over unchanged into the L34 generation's second year — 2020 was a features-only model year (Safety Shield 360 standardized on SR, Driver Assist Package added to S) with no powertrain revision. Modest output for a mid-size sedan against rivals already fielding turbos and hybrids.

Torque
180 lb-ft @ 3,600 rpm (2.5L FWD, volume SV); 178 lb-ft with AWD; 273 lb-ft @ 1,600 rpm from the VC-Turbo
18/100
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

180 lb-ft peaking at 3,600 rpm is the signature of the class's remaining naturally aspirated fours; the turbocharged and hybrid mid-size sedans of 2020 delivered more torque and delivered it far lower in the rev range — Nissan's own VC-Turbo makes 273 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm.

0–60 mph time
~7.8 s (2.5L FWD, volume SV); 8.4 s instrumented for the 2.5 AWD; ~5.8 s for the VC-Turbo SR
26/100
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Nissan publishes no 0–60 claim, so the figure is bracketed from instrumented tests of the identical PR25DD/Xtronic combination: roughly 7.6–7.9 s front-drive and 8.4 s with the heavier AWD hardware. Adequate, but a half-second-plus behind the hybrid Camry and Accord that set the segment's pace in 2020.

Powertrain refinement55
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The naturally aspirated 2.5 has no turbo lag, responds cleanly at part throttle, and benefits from the PR25DD's reverse cylinder head with integrated exhaust manifold for lower NVH — but reviewers of the 2020 car consistently judge the combination merely adequate, short on urgency when worked. The genuinely refined engine is the variable-compression 2.0 turbo, and it is confined to the SR and Platinum FWD grades rather than the volume configuration.

Transmission behavior57
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Nissan's next-generation Xtronic CVT is standard on every 2020 grade and both engines, and is one of the better executions of the type — reviewers credit it with simulated step-shifts and an absence of the usual buzzy drone, and its expanded lock-up area helps efficiency. It still cannot match the decisiveness of the segment's conventional eight-speeds under hard use, and paddle shifters are restricted to the SR grade.

AWD/4WD availability68

For 2020 Intelligent All-Wheel Drive is orderable on every one of the five 2.5-liter grades — S, SR, SV, SL and Platinum — a real advantage in a segment where the Accord, Sonata and Malibu were front-drive only, and a broader spread than the Altima itself offered in later years. It is held to the middle-upper band because operation is basic on-demand torque split (0:100 to 50:50) with no terrain modes, low range or torque vectoring, and because it cannot be paired with the VC-Turbo.

Powertrain lineup breadth55
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Two genuinely distinct gas engines — the 188 hp 2.5 and the world's first production variable-compression 2.0 turbo — plus a front- or all-wheel-drive choice on the 2.5 covers mainstream needs, and the VC-Turbo is offered on two grades (SR and Platinum) rather than the single grade it was narrowed to later. What holds it mid-band is the complete absence of any electrified option in a year when Camry, Accord, Sonata and Fusion all sold hybrids.

2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.21C
Combined fuel economy
32 MPG combined (2.5L FWD, volume SV — same as S and SL); 31 MPG for FWD SR/Platinum, 30 MPG for 2.5 AWD, 29 MPG for AWD SR/Platinum and the VC-Turbo
58/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

EPA rates the volume 2.5-liter FWD SV at 32 MPG combined — among the best figures any non-hybrid mid-size sedan posted for 2020, helped by a 0.26 coefficient of drag and the Xtronic's expanded lock-up range, though still well short of the hybrid Camry and Accord. Note this is a better rating than later Altima model years gave the SV, which dropped to the 31 MPG SR/Platinum tier.

City fuel economy
28 MPG city (2.5L FWD SV, also S and SL); 27 MPG for FWD SR/Platinum, 26 MPG with AWD, 25 MPG for the VC-Turbo
55/100
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

City is the weakest leg of the Altima's EPA line: with no hybrid assist to recover braking energy, stop-and-go running returns 28 MPG — strong for a naturally aspirated mid-sizer but roughly half what a hybrid rival managed around town in 2020.

Highway fuel economy
39 MPG highway (2.5L FWD SV, also S and SL); 37 MPG for FWD SR/Platinum, 35–36 MPG with AWD, 34 MPG for the VC-Turbo
71/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Highway is where the Altima earns its keep — a 0.26 drag coefficient, active grille shutters and a very tall CVT overdrive ratio yield 39 MPG for the volume SV, near the top of the non-hybrid sedan field in 2020 and the core of the car's long-commute case.

Driving range
518 mi (EPA total, 16.2-gal tank × 32 MPG combined); ~632 mi on a highway-only tank, 502 mi for FWD SR/Platinum, ~480 mi with 2.5 AWD
62/100
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

EPA's published total range for the volume 2.5 FWD is 518 miles, and a steady highway run stretches that past 600 — comfortably above average for a mid-size sedan on a fairly ordinary 16.2-gallon tank, though short of what hybrid rivals extracted from smaller tanks.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$1,950/yr (EPA, 15,000 mi/yr on regular); $2,000/yr for FWD SR/Platinum, and more again for AWD and the VC-Turbo
57/100
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

EPA's published annual cost for the volume 2.5 FWD is $1,950 at standard assumptions — cheap against the market as a whole and against most sedans in this catalog, but a few hundred dollars a year worse than the hybrid mid-size sedans it competed with directly in 2020.

Fuel requirements85
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2.5-liter engine that powers every grade — and the entire AWD lineup — is specified for regular unleaded, which is the cheapest and simplest fueling story available in the segment and covers the volume configuration outright. It falls a little short of a perfect score only because for 2020 Nissan specified premium unleaded for the VC-Turbo: EPA rated that engine on regular, but its published 248 hp / 273 lb-ft figures are premium-fuel numbers, so the two turbo grades carry a real running-cost penalty for full output.

NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (frontal 4, side 5, rollover 5)
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2020 Altima earns NHTSA's top 5-star overall NCAP result, with side impact and rollover both at 5 stars and the combined frontal result the weak leg at 4 stars. The rating is the same across the FWD and AWD listings.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness58
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Every crashworthiness test IIHS ran on the 2020 car came back Good, but the Top Safety Pick it earned is a conditional one — it applies only to cars built with the optional front crash prevention and the specific LED headlights, so a base S off the lot does not carry the award, and it is TSP rather than TSP+. The same L34 structure later rated Poor in IIHS's updated side-impact test, a substantive occupant-protection shortfall that the 2020-era test slate simply did not measure.

Standard ADAS suite breadth74
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

On the volume SV every benchmark item is standard for 2020 — Safety Shield 360 supplies AEB with pedestrian detection, rear automatic braking, lane departure warning, radar blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert and high-beam assist, and ProPILOT Assist adds stop-and-go adaptive cruise with lane centering at no extra cost. It misses the top band because the suite is not standard on every trim: the base S has only plain AEB unless the Driver Assist Package is bought, and the SR cannot be had with ProPILOT Assist at all.

Automatic emergency braking performance66
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the forward system Superior against vehicles and Advanced against pedestrians in daylight, and rear automatic braking comes with Safety Shield 360 — strong coverage for a 2020 midsize sedan. Two things hold it mid-band: the pedestrian-detection capability is optional rather than standard on the base S, and nighttime pedestrian performance was untested in 2020 but the same sensor-and-headlight combination was later given No Credit, with IIHS attributing that to inadequate low beams — which on this car are Marginal-rated on the S.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage68
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Radar blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are standard from the SR up — including the volume SV — and rear automatic braking supplies real intervention behind the car rather than only a chime, which was ahead of much of the 2020 midsize field. It stays mid-band because a base S buyer has to option the coverage in, the blind-spot system is alert-only with no steering or braking correction, no safe-exit or rear-occupant alert is offered, and the 360-degree camera is confined to the Platinum grade.

Lane keeping & centering68
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Lane departure warning is standard from SR up and ProPILOT Assist — whose lane centering is a well-regarded mainstream implementation — is standard rather than optional on the volume SV, better availability than the later restructured lineup offered. It is capped by the trims that cannot have centering at all (S and SR) and by reviewer commentary that the Altima's vague on-center steering makes judging its corrections harder than it should be, with the departure warning chiming often on a windy highway.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist74
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

ProPILOT Assist pairs full-speed-range Intelligent Cruise Control with stop-and-hold in traffic and lane centering, it is standard on the volume SV, and reviewers rate the calibration near the top of the 2020 mainstream midsize field for gap management and smoothness. It misses the top band because the S and SR cannot be had with it at any price, and the Altima fields plain ProPILOT Assist 1.1 with no map-linked speed adjustment.

Hands-free driving availability5
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving is offered on the 2020 Altima at any grade or price. ProPILOT Assist is explicitly a hands-on-wheel system, and Nissan fielded no hands-off-capable variant in the US midsize-sedan class for this model year.

Headlight performance50
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

No 2020 Altima headlight configuration reaches IIHS Good: the LED projectors on SR, SV, SL and Platinum rate Acceptable and the base S halogens rate Marginal, which is why the Top Safety Pick carries a 'specific headlights' restriction. High-beam assist is standard from SR up but there is no curve-adaptive lighting, and these same low beams are what later cost the car all credit in the nighttime pedestrian AEB test.

Outward visibility64
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Forward and side sightlines are good for a modern sedan thanks to a low cowl and relatively slim A-pillars, but the fastback-influenced roofline, high rear deck and thick C-pillars pinch the over-the-shoulder and rear views. The 360-degree camera that would compensate is Platinum-only, leaving the volume SV on the standard rear-view camera plus cross-traffic alert.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability74
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

IIHS grades the 2020 Altima's LATCH hardware Good — its top ease-of-use rating — and midsize rear width with wide-opening doors makes two seats genuinely livable. It sits mid-upper rather than top because the fixed rear head restraints get in the way of the top tethers, the heavily bolstered seat bottoms push a booster onto the buckle, and lower anchors are provided only at the two outboard positions.

4Space & ComfortOne of the Altima's strongest categories.2.53C+
Seating capacity
5 seats (2 + 3-across bench), every grade
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Five seats across the whole 2020 range — the top of the sedan band and the only configuration offered, with no bench or captain's-chair variants anywhere in the lineup.

Front headroom
39.2 in without moonroof (base S); 38.0 in with the single-panel moonroof that is standard on the volume SV, SL and Platinum
80/100
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Nissan publishes front headroom both ways and this item asks for the without-sunroof figure, so 39.2 in is the value — near the top of the mid-size sedan range despite the fastback-influenced roofline. Worth knowing that the volume SV ships with the moonroof standard in 2020, which trims it to 38.0 in.

Front legroom
43.8 in, all grades
95/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

43.8 inches is at the generous end of the mid-size class and constant across every 2020 grade and both engines — front-seat stretch-out room is one of the L34 Altima's genuine strengths, backed by 58.2 in of front shoulder room.

Rear headroom
36.7 in as the volume SV is built (moonroof standard); 36.9 in on the base S, which cannot be ordered with a moonroof
43/100
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The sloping rear roofline that gives the L34 its silhouette already costs second-row headroom, and the SV's standard moonroof housing takes a further 0.2 in — 36.7 inches sits below the middle of the sedan band and taller rear passengers brush the headliner.

Rear legroom
35.2 in, all grades
32/100
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The weakest dimension on the car and the single biggest drag on this category. 35.2 inches is well short of the mid-size sedans the Altima is cross-shopped against, and it is what turns a rear-facing child seat behind a tall driver into a real negotiation.

Cargo/trunk volume
15.4 cu ft trunk, all grades; 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks standard from the base S, with release levers both in the cabin and inside the trunk opening
54/100
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

15.4 cubic feet is squarely mid-pack for a mid-size sedan, and a wide opening with a low liftover makes it easier to use than the number suggests. What it does not do is extend cleanly — the folded seatbacks sit neither flat nor level with the trunk floor and a bulkhead narrows the pass-through.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions56
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Conventional and adequate, with reviewers genuinely split on whether it is enough: a covered console bin with a 12V outlet, a low-mounted glovebox, four bottle-capable door pockets, a covered tray ahead of the shifter and front seatback pouches. Nothing here is an innovation — no underfloor trunk well, no fold-flat front passenger seat, no household outlet at any grade — so it sits in the competent middle of the band.

Seat comfort72
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Nissan's NASA-derived Zero Gravity front seats with dual-density foam earn repeated long-haul praise, and the volume SV backs them with an 8-way power driver's seat, 2-way power lumbar and heat as standard — more adjustment than most mainstream rivals' mid trims. The rear bench is the limiter: flat, low-set and finished in less soft-touch material than the front.

Ride quality68
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Independent struts front and multi-link rear with ZF Sachs monotube rear shocks and standard Intelligent Ride Control give the volume SV on 17-inch wheels a good comfort-versus-control compromise, and the extra sidewall over the SR/Platinum's 19s matters. What holds it mid-band is secondary ride: the pliancy does not extend to every bump type, and sharp impacts still register.

Cabin quietness68
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A quiet cabin is one of the few things nearly every reviewer of this car agrees on, and the 2019-new 2.5 was re-engineered partly for NVH. It does not reach the top band because the 2020 equipment chart carries no acoustic laminated glass and no active noise cancellation at any grade — the isolation is structural and tire-driven rather than engineered-in, so it thins out on coarse surfaces and under hard throttle.

Climate & comfort features76
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Unusually rich for a mainstream mid-size sedan at the volume trim's price: the 2020 SV includes heated front seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear heating/cooling vents, a single-panel moonroof and remote engine start with Intelligent Climate Control — all standard, with remote start standard even on the base S. It stops short of the top band only because ventilated seats, heated rear seats and rear climate controls are not offered at any price.

5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.07C
Base MSRP
$24,995 (2.5 S FWD incl. $895 destination; $24,100 before freight) — S with Intelligent AWD $26,345 delivered
91/100
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2020 is the second year of the sixth-generation (L34) Altima and Nissan held the entry point at $24,100 before a $895 destination charge, which puts the delivered base price near the bottom of the mid-size sedan band. It undercuts a 2020 Camry LE and lands just above a base Accord LX, and uniquely in the class the base grade can be ordered with all-wheel drive for $1,350 more.

Volume-Trim Price
$28,775 (2.5 SV FWD incl. destination); line runs $24,995 (S FWD) to $36,075 (Platinum VC-Turbo) delivered — SR $26,595 · SL $31,135 · Platinum $33,075 · Intelligent AWD a flat +$1,350 on every 2.5 grade
86/100
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The SV is the retail volume grade for this generation: it is the point where ProPILOT Assist, Safety Shield 360, alloy wheels and dual-zone climate are all standard rather than optional. At $28,775 delivered it asks about $1,300 more than this dataset's 2020 Accord volume trim, but it is the only car in the group that will sell you all-wheel drive at all, for a flat $1,350. The whole ladder, including the 248-hp VC-Turbo Platinum, stays in the lower half of the segment band.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
≈$5,200 over 5 years, maintenance + repairs combined (source range ≈$1,900–$7,400 by methodology)
58/100
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The naturally aspirated 2.5-liter PR25DD in the volume SV is cheap to keep — regular fuel, no turbocharger, conventional intervals — and RepairPal rates the 2020 car above average with low repair frequency. Two things keep this mid-band rather than class-leading: Nissan includes no complimentary scheduled maintenance, so the first oil change is out of pocket, and the next-generation Xtronic CVT is the component with the segment's worst out-of-warranty reputation, coming off cover at 60,000 miles. The 2020 model year also carries six recall campaigns, the most serious an engine main-bearing defect that can lead to engine failure — recall work itself is free, but it is a signal about early-build L34 repair exposure that the later cars do not carry.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
≈50% of delivered price retained at the 5-year mark (2025); ≈40% now at 6+ years
50/100
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Resale is the Altima's structural weakness and the item that does most of the damage in this category, since the effective ownership-cost total is driven by depreciation dollars. Heavy rental and fleet placement floods the used market, the aggressive 2020 incentive spend pushed new transaction prices well under sticker, and lingering buyer wariness about Nissan CVTs suppresses private-party demand — so a car that is genuinely cheap to buy hands a good share of that discount back at trade-in. It lands mid-band for the segment rather than at the floor: better than the ALG forecast Honda published for the 2020 Accord, clearly behind the Civic and Mazda3.

Basic warranty
3 years / 36,000 miles bumper-to-bumper (5 yr / unlimited mi corrosion perforation)
0/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Nissan's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 36 months or 36,000 miles — the industry floor and the bottom of the framework band. It matches Toyota and Honda but is two years and 24,000 miles short of what a 2020 Sonata or K5 buyer got at the same money.

Powertrain warranty
5 years / 60,000 miles powertrain (engine, transmission/transaxle, drivetrain)
0/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Powertrain coverage is 60 months or 60,000 miles, again the band floor. It matters more on this car than on most rivals because the next-generation Xtronic CVT is precisely the component Altima shoppers most want covered, and it comes off warranty at 60,000 miles — half the mileage Hyundai and Kia gave an original owner in 2020.

Complimentary maintenance & perks52
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Nissan included no complimentary scheduled maintenance on the 2020 Altima — there is no ToyotaCare or Hyundai Complimentary Maintenance equivalent, so the first oil change is out of pocket. What is included keeps this in the "basic roadside only" band rather than the zero band: roadside assistance runs the full 3 years / 36,000 miles alongside the basic term, and SV and above carry a NissanConnect Services trial with remote start, emergency calling and automatic collision notification. There are no fuel or charging credits and nothing that offsets the floor-level warranty terms.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$19,588 (≈$14,388 depreciation + $5,200 maintenance)
75/100
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

$28,775 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (50% retained, or about $14,388) leaves about $14,388 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $19,588 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.81C-
Predicted reliability52
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The sources disagree sharply and the disagreement itself is the finding, so this sits in the lower half of the mixed-signal band rather than the middle of it. Consumer Reports is the harshest voice and the most specific: 2/5 predicted reliability, last of seven among comparable 2020 sedans, with drivetrain, suspension, steering and brake trouble spots called out by name. J.D. Power is materially kinder at 79/100, but that is the bottom edge of its 'Average' band, not a good result. RepairPal, working from repair frequency and cost rather than owner-reported problems, is the outlier in the other direction at 4.0/5. Taken together the 2020 car reads as the weak end of the L34 generation — CR itself rates 2022-2023 as the generation's best years, and this is a second-year build of a body that had not yet absorbed its running changes.

Brand reliability track record60
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Brand-level item, and for a 2020 car there is an unusually direct measurement available: J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study surveys three-year-old vehicles, so the 2023 VDS is literally the study of 2020-model-year Nissans. It named Nissan one of the three most-improved brands with a 35 PP100 gain against a 186 PP100 industry average — a real improvement, on exactly this model year. Initial quality agreed: the 2020 IQS put Nissan 5th among mass-market brands at 161 PP100, five points better than the industry. What keeps this mid-pack rather than higher is the longer record behind those snapshots — Consumer Reports has consistently placed Nissan below Toyota, Subaru, Lexus, Honda and BMW, and the 2013-2018 CVT failure population, with its class-action settlements and extended powertrain coverage across Altima, Sentra and Versa, was still the brand's defining dependability story when this car was new.

Recall & TSB history42
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

This is the worst item in the category and the sharpest single contrast with later Altimas, which is why it sits in the bottom band. Six NHTSA campaigns name the 2020 model year, and two of them are the kind the band description reserves for a failing grade: 25V-437 covers defective engine bearings that can breach the block and discharge hot oil, with an explicit engine-fire consequence, and 21V-138 covers a tie-rod ball joint that can detach from the steering knuckle and cause loss of steering control. The engine campaign reaches only the 2.0L VC-Turbo and so does not touch the 2.5L volume car scored here, but it grew out of NHTSA preliminary evaluation PE23-023 into 2019-2021 Altima engine failures, and a model-year recall record is a model-year fact. The remaining four — rearview camera, two Continental tire campaigns, and rear window glass separation — are ordinary. The TSB side is heavy rather than clean, with 206 bulletins on file and the familiar Nissan CVT judder/reflash/fluid pattern running underneath a CVT class action that names 2019-2020 cars and has produced no recall and no warranty extension.

Powertrain durability reputation50
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Engine and transmission pull in opposite directions, and for 2020 the transmission pulls harder than it does on later cars. The volume configuration is the 2.5L PR25DD four — low-stress, long-lineage, no high-mileage red flag — but it drives through a Jatco Xtronic CVT, and the CVT class action over shuddering, hesitation and sudden power loss names 2019-2020 Altimas specifically, with no warranty extension and no federal recall reaching them. Consumer Reports independently flags drivetrain as a 2020 trouble spot. Scored below the equivalent 2023 item because that year benefits from four more years of running changes and is not named in the litigation. Buyers walking the 2020 trim ladder should also note that the optional 2.0L VC-Turbo is the engine later recalled fleet-wide for bearing failure — not the configuration scored here, but the same showroom.

Interior material quality60
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Competitive for the money without ever being a reason to buy the car — the middle of the band. Reviewers credit a clean, uncluttered dashboard design and robust switchgear, with soft-touch material on the instrument binnacle and door tops; below that the cabin is hard plastic throughout, and several outlets say it looks and feels cheap. This is the pre-facelift interior with the 8-inch screen, so it lacks the 12.3-inch unit that lifted the impression of the 2023 car, and it is scored a couple of points under that year accordingly. The Zero Gravity front seats remain the cabin's genuine strength.

Fit & finish62
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Generally solid with scattered, specific complaints — the middle of the band, with two signals that disagree. Nissan's measured initial quality was genuinely good in this period: 5th among mass-market brands in the 2020 IQS at 161 PP100, better than the industry average, with three segment wins. Against that, reviewers of this particular car name assembly faults rather than general impressions — visible gaps where the dashboard meets the windshield and a hood that looks out of alignment — and call out a lack of attention to detail against better-built rivals. Owner-reported windshields cracking without impact at around 9,000 miles are the most-complained-of issue on the model year and read as a glass or body-fitment problem rather than a wear item. Scored a few points under the 2023 car, which reviewers found 'sturdy and fairly well put-together'.

Dealer & service network72
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Brand-level item, and physical access was never the problem: Nissan ran one of the larger US franchised networks in 2020, roughly comparable to Honda in dealer count and behind Toyota, so a 2020 buyer had dense nationwide coverage. Service satisfaction is what caps it — mid-pack, well behind Toyota and Lexus, though Nissan has since ranked highest among truck brands in J.D. Power's Customer Service Index, which argues the service side is competent rather than poor. Scored two points above the figure this dataset carries for the 2023 model year and four above 2026 because 2020 predates Nissan's US restructuring and dealer-count contraction entirely; that contraction is now a live consideration over whatever ownership horizon remains for a six-year-old car.

Parts availability & repair cost82
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The category's clear strength and the one item here backed by a hard number. RepairPal puts Altima ownership at $483 a year against a $526 midsize-car average, with unscheduled shop visits and repair severity both exactly at the segment norm — cheaper to keep than its rivals without being unusually fragile. Three decades as one of America's highest-volume sedans, built in Smyrna and Canton, means OEM and aftermarket parts are cheap and universally stocked and every independent shop knows the platform, which shares components broadly across Nissan's PR/QR-engine and Xtronic range. It stops short of the Camry/Corolla tier because a CVT replacement is a four-figure big-ticket item that shows up disproportionately in this model's long-term cost tail — and on a 2020 car that item is now well outside its 60,000-mile powertrain coverage.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Altima's weakest categories.1.05D
Touchscreen size
8.0 in, standard on every grade from the base S up — the only size offered, with no larger screen available
12/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Eight inches was a competitive, class-normal figure for a 2020 mainstream sedan, and making it standard on the base car was genuinely generous. Measured against a framework band that runs to 15.5 inches it still scores low, because there is no upgrade path at any price.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness66
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The strength here is the physical-control balance rather than the software: hard shortcut keys along the bottom of the screen, a dedicated back button and real analog volume and tuning knobs mean most daily tasks never require a menu. Against that, the graphics were already dated by 2020, the home screen reads as busy, and the screen's mounting angle makes it glare-prone.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto60
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every grade including the base S, which puts the Altima at the top of what the middle band describes. They are wired-only, however — no 2020 Altima trim offers wireless projection, and Nissan did not add it to this generation for several more model years.

Voice control & native navigation45
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The volume SV has no built-in navigation at all — embedded maps arrive only on the SL and Platinum — so route guidance on the trim most people buy means using the phone. Voice control is largely a hand-off to the phone assistant rather than a native natural-language system; Nissan's own recognition handles audio, phone and hands-free texting and little else.

Audio system quality52
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The volume SV gets the same six-speaker AM/FM/MP3 head unit as the base S — adequate but unremarkable, and a notch behind rivals that put eight speakers in the middle of the range. The nine-speaker Bose premium system with HD Radio is real content but is locked to the SL and Platinum, two trims above the volume grade.

Digital instrument cluster56
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A 7.0-inch Advanced Drive-Assist colour display sits between analog speedometer and tachometer dials and is standard on every grade — a partial-digital cluster, but a large and configurable one that in 2020 many rivals still reserved for upper trims. A full-digital cluster was never offered on this generation of Altima.

OTA update capability15
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

There is no meaningful over-the-air update capability on a 2020 Altima. Nissan had not brought whole-vehicle OTA to its US mainstream line by this model year; infotainment and map data for the SL/Platinum navigation system are updated through the dealer or physical media, not pushed to the car.

Companion app & remote functions40
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The scored trim simply does not have it. NissanConnect Services — the telematics layer that drives the phone app, smartwatch access, remote start/lock and the Alexa skill — is bundled with the navigation package and therefore reaches only the SL and Platinum in 2020; the volume SV has no embedded modem function. What the SV does get is key-fob remote engine start with Intelligent Climate Control, which is convenient but is not app connectivity.

Charging ports & device power62
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Four illuminated USB ports — one Type-A and one Type-C in front, and the same pair for the second row — standard on every grade including the base S, which in 2020 put rear-seat USB-C in a mainstream sedan ahead of most of the class. It stops well short of the top band because no 2020 Altima offered a wireless charging pad at any trim, and there is no household outlet, just the console 12V socket.

Keyless & remote access74
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Nissan Intelligent Key proximity entry with push-button start is standard on every grade, and so is remote engine start — including on the base S, which few rivals matched in 2020. The ceiling is the absence of the modern conveniences: no phone-as-key, no hands-free trunk release, and remote functions only via the fob on the volume SV since app services are SL/Platinum-only.

Camera & parking aids58
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The volume SV covers the basics well — rear camera, Rear Sonar System and Rear Automatic Braking all standard — but the Intelligent Around View Monitor, Nissan's well-regarded 360-degree system, is restricted to the single top Platinum grade. There is no front sonar below that and no automated parking at any price.

Head-up display availability5
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

No head-up display was offered on any 2020 Altima grade, at any price, with either engine — the sixth-generation car never had one.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Altima's weakest categories.1.64D
Kid & car-seat practicality62
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The hardware is right — IIHS rates the LATCH system Good for ease of use, there are three top-tether anchors across the bench, the rear doors open wide on a low sill, and Rear Door Alert is standard on every grade. What holds it mid-band is 35.2 inches of rear legroom, five short of an Accord's: a rear-facing seat behind a tall driver is a genuine squeeze, and the trunk, while a usable 15.4 cu ft, does not extend cleanly because the folded seatbacks sit neither flat nor level with its floor.

Family safety package78
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Strong credentials on exactly the trims families buy: five-star NHTSA overall, IIHS Good in every crashworthiness test with a Top Safety Pick award, and Nissan Safety Shield 360 standard on every 2020 grade except the base S — where it is at least newly available as a package, which is the headline change for the model year. ProPILOT Assist arrives standard at the volume SV. It misses the top band because the headlights that qualify the car for the award are only Acceptable rather than Good, and the base S still needs a box ticked.

Family road-trip comfort64
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Better equipped for a four-up long haul than most mainstream sedans at this price: rear heating/cooling vents, dual-zone automatic climate and two rear USB ports (one of them Type-C) are all standard on the volume SV, the cabin is quiet, and the Zero Gravity front seats hold up over hundreds of miles. The limits are space and amenity depth — 35.2 in of rear legroom, no rear climate controls, no sunshades, no rear entertainment, and a 15.4 cu ft trunk that has to hold everything since the seats are occupied.

Daily driving ease76
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

This is the Altima's natural habitat. The Xtronic CVT is one of the better ones in stop-and-go — smooth, quiet, no hunting — the steering is light, the controls are physical and legible, remote start is standard, and ProPILOT Assist with full-speed-range adaptive cruise and stop-and-go is standard from the volume SV up, which is unusual at this price. The one recurring gripe is a soft initial throttle response off the line.

Commuting cost efficiency76
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Cheap to run by mid-size-sedan standards: 28/39/32 MPG on regular fuel for the FWD SV, about $1,950 a year at 15,000 miles, and real-world results that beat the sticker in independent testing. Parts and routine service are inexpensive and widely available. The caveat is downstream rather than per-mile — the Xtronic CVT is the component that turns a cheap commuter into an expensive one if it fails outside warranty.

Parking & maneuverability64
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The volume SV's 36.1-foot curb-to-curb turning circle is genuinely tight for a 192.9-inch mid-size sedan — better than the 37.4 ft the 19-inch SR and Platinum turn in — and a rear camera plus standard Rear Sonar cover the blind spots you back into. Working against it: the car is long and wide, the thick C-pillar of the floating roofline badly hurts the over-the-shoulder view, the high-mounted stop lamp on the package shelf clutters the mirror, and the 360-degree camera is Platinum-only.

Work capability15
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Not a work vehicle in any sense the item measures. Nissan publishes no towing rating for the Altima in the US — the Xtronic CVT is not approved for trailering — there is no bed, and payload works out to roughly 1,060 lb including occupants. The only load-carrying asset is a 15.4 cu ft trunk.

Durability for work duty35
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The Altima's rental- and fleet-heavy life means the platform does accumulate hard, indifferent miles, and the cloth interiors on S and SV are wear-tolerant. But it is a unibody family sedan with no work provisions, and the Xtronic CVT is the well-known weak point precisely under sustained load — which is what work duty means.

Jobsite & upfit practicality14
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Essentially no work-oriented provisions. A single 12V console socket is the only onboard power — there is no inverter or household outlet at any grade — and there are no roof rails, no factory hitch, no washable surfaces and no upfit ecosystem. Trunk hooks and cargo nets exist only as dealer accessories.

Long-distance comfort & range80
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The Altima's strongest mission by a wide margin. A 16.2-gallon tank at 39 MPG highway is roughly 630 miles between fills and 518 miles on the EPA combined figure; the Zero Gravity seats are documented as hotspot-free over an 1,800-mile run; the cabin is quiet; and ProPILOT Assist — standard on the volume SV — takes real strain out of interstate hours. Only a firmish secondary ride and the short rear legroom keep it out of the very top.

Outdoor & adventure capability34
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

One real credential and little else. Intelligent All-Wheel Drive is a $1,350 option on every 2.5 grade — a genuine rarity among mainstream mid-size sedans in 2020 and enough to make a ski trip or a gravel forest road unremarkable. Everything around it is pavement-bound: 5.1 inches of ground clearance, no tow rating for bikes or a small trailer, no roof rails for a box or a rack, no onboard power for camping, and rear seatbacks that will not fold flat.

Gear & luggage flexibility44
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A 15.4 cu ft trunk with a wide opening, a low liftover and a thoughtful touch — 60/40 fold releases inside the trunk as well as in the cabin, so a step ladder goes in with the lid closed. Past that it is a sedan: the seatbacks do not lie flat or level with the floor, a bulkhead narrows the pass-through, the trunk pinches between the wheel housings, and there are no roof rails, no hitch and no underfloor storage for bulky gear.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.21C
Handling & agility66
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Secure and better sorted than the Altima's appliance reputation suggests: a multi-link rear end, wide 63.2-inch tracks, standard Active Understeer Control and Intelligent Trace Control, and a low 0.26 drag coefficient add up to a car reviewers consistently call composed. It is not an engaging one, though — on the SV's 17-inch all-seasons the limits arrive early and safely, and the instrumented figure-eight time is mid-pack rather than notable.

Steering feel55
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Nissan's dual-pinion electric rack is quick enough at 15.3:1 and 2.8 turns lock-to-lock, and it is accurate and consistently weighted at speed. What it does not do is communicate — there is no meaningful feedback from the front tyres, and the flat-bottomed wheel fitted to the SV is styling rather than function on a car with no sporting intent.

Braking confidence70
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Instrumented stopping distance is good for the class — 116 feet from 60 mph on all-season tyres is competitive with the Camry and Accord — and the hardware is conventional and predictable: vented front discs, solid rears, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist standard, plus Rear Automatic Braking from the SR up. Pedal feel is progressive if a little soft underfoot, which is the tuning a family sedan wants rather than a flaw.

Powertrain smoothness & response60
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The PR25DD 2.5 and the latest Xtronic are a well-matched, unobtrusive pairing by CVT standards — reviewers call the transmission nicely tuned and more responsive than most of its kind, and the engine was re-engineered for 2019 with NVH specifically in mind. The gap to the top band is initial response: tip-in is soft, the CVT takes a beat to gather itself off the line, and at least one tester noted roughness at idle.

Drivetrain noise & vibration60
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Better than the CVT stereotype: Consumer Reports rates the engine's voice as more refined than most rivals', and the 2019-new 2.5's integrated exhaust manifold and low engine mounting keep it civil at cruise. It still droops into the familiar held-rpm drone under hard acceleration or a long grade, which is the ceiling on any Xtronic car.

Turning circle

65/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

36.1 feet is tight for a 192.9-inch, 111.2-inch-wheelbase mid-size sedan and makes the volume SV noticeably easier to turn around than the sportier 19-inch grades, which give up 1.3 feet to their wider, lower-profile tyres.

Driving position & ergonomics68
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The control layout is a real strength — a low, wide 'gliding wing' dash with legible physical switchgear, audio knobs and hard keys, a tilt/telescoping column and an 8-way power driver's seat with power lumbar standard on the SV. The compromises are all consequences of the styling: a low-slung seating position, small windows, a thick C-pillar and a package-shelf stop lamp that spoil the rearward view, and hard console and door-armrest plastic that press on knees in corners.

Fun-to-drive factor45
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The volume 2.5 SV is a serene, competent device rather than an entertaining one: adequate power delivered through a CVT with no paddles (those are SR-only), numb steering, and a chassis tuned to reassure. Nothing about it is unpleasant — it is simply forgettable. The enthusiast interest in this generation lives entirely in the 248-hp VC-Turbo SR, a different car from the one scored here.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Altima's strongest categories.2.60C+
Standard equipment generosity70
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Every 2020 Altima gets an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a power driver's seat, push-button start, a rearview camera, and standard Automatic Emergency Braking, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning and Intelligent Driver Alertness. The 2020 change that matters is the safety rollout: Safety Shield 360 became standard on SR, SV, SL and Platinum and newly available on S via a Driver Assist Package, and ProPILOT Assist is standard from the volume SV up — genuinely more highway assist than a Camry or Accord included at the same money. It stops short of class-leading because the base S still needs an option box for blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert, which Honda Sensing and Toyota Safety Sense covered line-wide.

Feature value per dollar66
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

At $28,775 delivered the volume SV bundles ProPILOT Assist and the full Safety Shield 360 suite as standard, returns 32 MPG combined, and can be had with all-wheel drive for a flat $1,350 — something no Accord or Camry four-cylinder offered at any price in 2020. Against that, the 188-hp 2.5 and Xtronic CVT make it the least satisfying volume powertrain in the class at roughly 7.8 seconds to 60, there is no hybrid option in a segment that had gone electrified, and roughly half the purchase price comes back as depreciation inside five years. Fair value, not a bargain.

Trim & configuration breadth82
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2020 is the widest this generation ever got: twelve orderable configurations across two engines, with Intelligent AWD available on all five 2.5-liter grades from base S to Platinum and a 248-hp VC-Turbo above them. Offering AWD at the entry price and again at the top is a real point of difference against the front-drive-only Accord. It falls short of a Camry's ladder only for having no hybrid and no V6, and for restricting the VC-Turbo to front-drive SR and Platinum.

Sales popularity & market acceptance68
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The Altima sold 137,988 units in the US in calendar 2020, holding a clear third place in the mid-size class behind the Camry and Accord and comfortably ahead of the Sonata, Legacy and Mazda6 — a solid absolute number. The trajectory is what caps the score: volume fell about 34% from roughly 209,000 in 2019, a far steeper drop than the pandemic-year market average, and a large share of what did move went to rental and fleet rather than retail.

Brand desirability & image44
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2020 was close to the low point for Nissan's US brand equity, and the Altima carries more of that baggage than any other Nissan car line: the post-Ghosn management crisis, record corporate losses, a decade of volume bought with fleet placement and subprime retail, and unresolved consumer wariness about Xtronic CVTs. It shows up directly in the numbers on this car's own ownership scorecard, where a five-year retention of roughly 50% sits well below the Japanese rivals the Altima is shopped against.

Deals & incentive availability88
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Scored on buyer benefit as the item directs, and 2020 was about the best year in living memory to buy one of these. Nissan met the pandemic demand collapse with 0% APR for up to 84 months stacked on cash rebates, and because the Altima was simultaneously a slow-selling sedan in a crossover market and a car Nissan needed to move, dealers discounted hard on top of that. The same market weakness that wrecks its residuals makes it exceptionally cheap to transact.

Model freshness86
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2020 is year two of the all-new sixth-generation (L34) Altima, which arrived for 2019 with a new platform, two new engines including the world's first production variable-compression turbo, a next-generation Xtronic and the return of all-wheel drive. Nissan's own framing for 2020 was "following the introduction of a totally new generation design just last year," and the year's changes are content adds rather than a facelift. A 2020 buyer was getting current platform and powertrain technology with no redesign on the horizon — the missing hybrid is the only thing holding this below the top band.

Critical reception & awards54
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently placed the 2020 Altima in the bottom half of mid-size sedan rankings and it won no comparison test, with criticism aimed at CVT drone, a slow volume powertrain, interior materials behind the class leaders and the absence of a hybrid. Credit where it is due: it holds an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2020, the VC-Turbo made Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems for 2020, reviewers rated its ride comfort and available AWD highly, and in Car and Driver's five-car midsize comparison it finished ahead of the new Subaru Legacy. But the class awards that year all went to the Accord, and no significant award attaches to the Altima as a car.
