The verdict

A capable full-size luxury sedan, strong on technology and held back by ownership.

The 2026 Audi A8 L is a beautifully built, exceptionally quiet limousine that does the flagship-sedan job well — 42.9 inches of rear legroom, standard air suspension, standard quattro, and a full driver-assist suite on every car for $95,100. What it doesn't do is make financial sense: 22 MPG combined on required premium fuel, about $2,650 a year in gas, and roughly 37% of its value left after five years, which works out to around $68,000 in depreciation and upkeep. It's also the oldest design in the class, with a 10.1-inch screen and no hands-free highway driving while the 7 Series and S-Class have moved on. Lease it, buy it used, or buy it because you want the quietest cabin in the segment — just don't buy it new expecting to get your money back.

Jump to scores

Strengths

  • One of the quietest, smoothest-riding cabins you can buy
  • Back-seat space that earns the 'L' badge
  • The whole safety-tech suite is standard, including the headlights

What holds it back

  • Depreciation is brutal — the single biggest cost of owning one
  • Thirsty, and it only drinks premium
  • A 12.5 cubic-foot trunk in a 208-inch car

The ZF-based 8-speed tiptronic is generally smooth in normal driving, but reviewers flag noticeably slow downshifts when calling for a quick pass, keeping it out of the top tier.

US lineup is gas-only with two distinct engines — the 335-hp V6 mild hybrid A8 and the 563-hp twin-turbo V8 S8. The PHEV and V8-powered A8 were dropped in 2022 and no EV variant is offered; e-tron GT covers Audi's luxury EV sedan slot separately.

NHTSA overall rating
Not rated by NHTSA — 4.5★ estimated from segment norms
75/100
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA has not published an overall star rating for the current-generation (D5) Audi A8 in the US; the prior-generation A8 posted mixed component scores and the current flagship's uprated multi-material structure is expected to meet or exceed segment norms. A 4.5-star inferred rating aligns with treatment of the untested 7 Series and other full-size luxury flagships.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness72
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The current-generation A8 is not on the 2025 or 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick or TSP+ list — IIHS has not completed the full award-eligible test slate (updated moderate-overlap, side, and headlight tests) for the D5 A8. Audi's crash structure has generally earned Good results where tested, but the lack of a completed slate and typical Acceptable headlight ratings on volume trims keep it out of TSP contention.

Standard ADAS suite breadth88
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

As Audi's flagship, the 2026 A8 makes the full Audi pre sense suite standard across all trims: pre sense front (AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection), active lane assist, adaptive cruise assist with stop-and-go, Audi side assist (BSM), rear cross-traffic assist, exit warning, and 360° top-view camera. Only hands-free driving is unavailable — everything else in the ADAS toolkit is included on the base 55 TFSI trim.

Automatic emergency braking performance82
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Audi pre sense front on the A8 pairs radar and camera fusion with pedestrian and cyclist detection operating day and night, plus turn assist for oncoming traffic at low-speed intersections. Prior-generation Audi platforms have earned Superior IIHS front-crash-prevention results in daylight vehicle-to-vehicle; the current A8 has not been retested under updated protocols, keeping the score in the upper band rather than at the ceiling.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage90
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Audi side assist (BSM) with mirror-mounted indicators, rear cross-traffic assist, and exit warning for cyclists opening into doors are standard on every 2026 A8 trim. Coverage is class-leading for the segment and includes active alerts on the head-up display where equipped.

Lane keeping & centering80
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Audi active lane assist provides confident centering on well-marked highways and integrates smoothly with adaptive cruise assist. Reviewers describe it as one of the more polished non-hands-free systems, though it lacks the confident lane changes of BMW Steering and Lane Control Assistant and can hand back control on faded lane markings.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist86
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Adaptive cruise assist bundles full-speed-range ACC with lane centering, predictive nav-linked speed adaptation for curves and speed-limit changes, and confident stop-and-go behavior. Reviewers consistently rate the calibration as among the smoothest of the tier-2 (hands-on) systems in the luxury segment.

Hands-free driving availability15
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Audi does not offer a hands-free highway driving system in the US on the 2026 A8 — no equivalent to BMW Highway Assistant, GM Super Cruise, Ford BlueCruise, Mercedes Drive Pilot, or Tesla FSD Supervised. Audi's Level 3 Traffic Jam Pilot demonstrated on the D5 A8 was never activated for the US market, and all A8 ADAS features remain hands-on driver-monitored assists.

Headlight performance94
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

HD Matrix LED headlights with adaptive high beam are standard on the 2026 A8, and Digital Matrix LED with laser high beam is available on Prestige trim — one of the strongest lighting offerings in any segment. IIHS 'Good' rating expected across trims based on the sophisticated glare-free high-beam control; A8 lighting is a genuine standout feature versus 7 Series and S-Class.

Outward visibility74
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Full-size sedan length, thick D-pillars, and a rising beltline yield below-average natural rearward and rear-quarter sightlines; the standard 360° top-view camera with virtual parking assist and parking system plus front-and-rear provide comprehensive electronic compensation. Long-wheelbase L variant slightly worsens over-shoulder sightlines but improves side-window rear-quarter view.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability74
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The A8 has generous rear-seat legroom (especially the L variant) and wide rear-door openings that make loading rear-facing seats easy; LATCH anchors are present in both outboard rear positions. Anchors are covered by seat trim and require some digging, and the executive rear-seat package with reclining outboard seats can complicate installation on higher trims.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions75
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Center console, door bins and rear armrest cubbies are well-lined and competitively sized but nothing standout — no in-bed trunks or unique storage tricks; the dual-touchscreen dash also eats potential storage real estate.

Seat comfort90

Available 22-way power front seats with ventilation, massage and heating, plus optional rear massaging thrones with the Executive Package. Front and rear seat comfort are consistently praised as top-tier for long trips.

Ride quality92

Standard adaptive air suspension with optional predictive active suspension delivers a plush, well-controlled ride that shrugs off broken pavement — among the best in the segment.

Cabin quietness93
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Dual-pane acoustic laminated glass, active noise cancellation and thick sound insulation make the A8 among the quietest luxury sedans, though the S-Class and 7 Series edge it on measured dBA.

Climate & comfort features95
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard four-zone climate control, heated front seats/steering wheel and rear-seat climate; ventilated and massaging seats front and rear are widely available. Optional rear-seat comfort package adds fold-out footrests and rear-seat controls.

#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

CarEdge projects ~$707/yr = $3,536 for scheduled maintenance over 5 years, but full-size Audi sedans routinely see complex electronics and air-suspension repairs once the 4/50 warranty lapses; blended M&R estimate ~$5,500.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
≈37.4% retained after 5 yr (62.6% depreciation)

Complimentary maintenance & perks50
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No included scheduled maintenance (Audi Care is a paid add-on), but the A8 includes 4 years of 24-Hour Roadside Assistance and a multi-year Audi connect PLUS trial (traffic, remote, Wi-Fi, Google Earth); a modest perk stack for a $95k flagship.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$68,350 (≈$62,850 depreciation + $5,500 maintenance)
0/100
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$100,400 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (37.4% retained, or about $37,550) leaves about $62,850 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $68,350 in total.

6Reliability & QualityGrades above the middle of the scale.2.86B-
Predicted reliability62
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Consumer Reports has historically given the A8 below-average predicted reliability, driven by complex electronics, air suspension, and infotainment issues on the D5 generation. J.D. Power quality/dependability scores for the model have been mixed to below average.

Brand reliability track record65
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Audi as a brand sits mid-pack in recent J.D. Power VDS and CR brand rankings — better than some German rivals in specific years but not among the top-5 dependability brands (Lexus, Toyota, Buick, Honda typically lead).

Recall & TSB history70
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The current-generation A8 has had scattered recalls (fuel pump, airbag control units, driver-assist software, seatbelt pretensioners) but no systemic powertrain or fire recalls. TSB activity is typical for a tech-heavy luxury flagship.

Powertrain durability reputation82
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 3.0L TFSI V6 mild-hybrid is a mature, well-regarded engine used across the Audi range with a solid long-term reputation. The ZF 8HP-derived 8-speed automatic is widely considered one of the most durable transmissions in the industry.

Interior material quality93
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Class-leading cabin execution: Valcona leather, open-pore wood, brushed/etched aluminum, Alcantara headliner options, and dense soft-touch coverage throughout. Reviewers routinely rank the A8 cabin among the top of the full-size luxury class.

Fit & finish92
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Audi has a decades-long reputation for tight, consistent panel gaps and precise assembly, and the A8 sits at the top of that hierarchy. Reviewer complaints about squeaks and rattles on the D5 are rare.

Dealer & service network76
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Audi operates roughly 300 U.S. dealers — adequate national coverage but noticeably thinner than Mercedes-Benz or Lexus, particularly in secondary markets. Customer service satisfaction sits mid-pack among luxury brands in J.D. Power CSI.

Parts availability & repair cost50
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Audi A8 out-of-warranty repair costs are among the highest in the segment. Components are largely dealer-only, aftermarket is thin, and complex systems (air suspension, MMI, driver-assist sensors) drive expensive labor. RepairPal and enthusiast forum data consistently flag high total cost of repair for the D5.

7Technology & InfotainmentThe A8's best-graded category.3.32B+
Touchscreen size
10.1 in upper MMI touch + 8.6 in lower haptic touch
36/100
#10 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The current-generation (D5, refreshed) A8 retains Audi's outgoing dual-screen MMI Touch Response layout — a 10.1-inch upper display for infotainment paired with an 8.6-inch lower display for HVAC and comfort controls; smaller than the panoramic single-screen layouts in the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S-Class, and the new-generation A6.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness76
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

MMI Touch Response with haptic and audible click feedback is logical and menu structure is clean, but the dual-screen system is now a generation behind Audi's newer MMI and reviewers note it can feel slow and reach-heavy for climate adjustments compared to the S-Class MBUX and BMW iDrive 8.5.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto90
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard across all A8 trims.

Voice control & native navigation78
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Audi's natural-voice MMI navigation plus with hybrid online/offline routing and cloud-based voice recognition works well and integrates cleanly with the Virtual Cockpit, though it lacks the AI-assistant polish of MBUX Hey Mercedes and BMW's new Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Audio system quality92
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Bang & Olufsen Premium 3D Sound (17 speakers, 730W) is very strong; optional Bang & Olufsen Advanced 3D Sound (23 speakers, 1,820W, with 4D bass exciters) is a genuine flagship-tier audio experience widely praised by reviewers.

Digital instrument cluster92
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

12.3-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus digital instrument cluster is standard on every A8 trim, with configurable views including a full-screen Google Earth-based map — remains one of the most polished digital clusters in the segment.

OTA update capability60
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The A8's outgoing MMI platform supports limited over-the-air updates for maps and infotainment but does not receive whole-vehicle OTA feature drops like the BMW 7 Series, EQS, or Tesla; most functional updates still require a dealer visit.

Companion app & remote functions76
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

myAudi app provides remote lock/unlock, vehicle status, remote climate preconditioning, locate, and horn/lights; core remote functions require Audi connect PLUS which is subscription-gated after the included trial. No UWB phone-as-key.

Charging ports & device power82
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

USB-C data/charging ports are standard in both rows, wireless phone charging with signal booster is standard on Executive and above (available on the volume trim), and rear-seat passengers get climate controls and screens; no household AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access92
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Audi advanced key with proximity entry, hands-free trunk, and push-button start is standard on every A8; remote start, lock/unlock, and locate come through the myAudi app.

Camera & parking aids90
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

360-degree top-view camera with high-resolution rendering, front and rear parking sensors, and Park Assist Plus (semi-automated parallel and perpendicular parking) are all standard on the A8.

Head-up display availability85
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Full-color head-up display projecting speed, navigation, and driver-assist info is standard on the A8 — one of the few flagship features Audi makes standard rather than optioned.

8Use-Case FitOne of the A8's weakest categories.1.70C-
Kid & car-seat practicality74
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Long-wheelbase A8 L delivers 42.9 in rear legroom — one of the segment's most generous rear-facing car-seat wells — with wide rear-door openings and LATCH on both outboard positions (cat3.3.3 = 74). Held back by a 12.5 cu ft trunk that swallows a stroller but leaves little else, a rear seatback that only offers a ski pass-through (no 40/20/40 fold), and LATCH anchors that sit behind trim covers. Optional Executive rear-seat package with reclining contoured thrones further complicates rear-facing seat fit versus a flat bench.

Family safety package76
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Full Audi pre sense suite is standard on every 2026 A8 trim including AEB with pedestrian/cyclist detection, active lane assist, adaptive cruise assist with stop-and-go, side assist (BSM), rear cross-traffic assist, exit warning, and 360° top-view camera (cat3.2.1 = 88). NHTSA has not tested the current-gen A8 (inferred 4.5★) and it does not appear on the 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick list. Flagship pricing means the trims 'families actually buy' aren't in play for most, but the standard ADAS package is unusually complete.

Family road-trip comfort86
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard four-zone climate control (cat4.3.4 = 95), 42.9 in rear legroom, adaptive air suspension (ride 92), class-leading cabin quietness (93), heated rear seats and wireless charging on higher trims, and available rear-seat massage with the Executive rear-seat package make multi-hour trips exceptional for all four occupants. Held back only by the 12.5 cu ft trunk that struggles to swallow a stroller plus family luggage — a real ceiling on true family road-trip capacity versus the 7 Series' 19.2 cu ft.

Daily driving ease86
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard adaptive air suspension isolates broken pavement, quattro AWD is standard, the ZF-derived 8-speed tiptronic auto is smooth in stop-and-go (no DCT low-speed hesitation like the A6), adaptive cruise assist with stop-and-go and active lane assist are standard, and the cabin is among the quietest in any segment. Comfortable heated front seats (cat4.3.1 = 90), standard head-up display, and 360° camera + Park Assist Plus round out one of the more effortless daily drivers in the class. Held back only by the absence of hands-free driving (cat3.2.6 = 15).

Commuting cost efficiency28
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

EPA-rated 22 MPG combined (19/27 city/hwy) requiring 91-octane premium fuel puts fueleconomy.gov's annual fuel cost at ~$2,650/yr — meaningfully worse than the BMW 740i xDrive (27 MPG combined) and hugely worse than the 750e PHEV. Repair costs on the D5 A8 are among the highest in the segment (cat6.3.2 = 50) and no electrified variant is offered in the US to offset commuting spend.

Parking & maneuverability60
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A8 L at 208.7 in long is genuinely large in urban settings, and unlike the BMW 7 Series it offers no rear-wheel steering to shrink its turning circle (~40 ft). Standard 360° top-view camera and Park Assist Plus with semi-automated parallel and perpendicular parking (cat7.3.2 = 90) compensate meaningfully, but thick D-pillars and the long wheelbase still make tight garages a chore.

Work capability15
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Full-size luxury sedan with no US tow rating, no bed, and a 12.5 cu ft trunk that's actually smaller than the A6's — a step down from the smaller Audi. Rear seat offers only a narrow ski pass-through, so long objects like ladders or lumber won't fit even with the trunk open. Not remotely work-capable.

Durability for work duty25
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Valcona leather, open-pore wood, brushed aluminum, dual MMI touchscreens, standard adaptive air suspension, and complex electronics are the antithesis of trade abuse. Predicted reliability is below-average (cat6.1.1 = 62), out-of-warranty repair costs are among the highest in the segment (cat6.3.2 = 50), and there is no fleet-vehicle deployment to prove the platform under hard use.

Jobsite & upfit practicality15
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No cargo bed, no factory roof rails, no factory hitch, and no onboard household AC outlet. Trunk provides a 12V outlet and a few tie-down hooks — nothing beyond the baseline any luxury sedan provides. No upfit ecosystem, no washable surfaces, no work packages.

Long-distance comfort & range88
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A core A8 mission: standard adaptive air suspension delivers among the best rides in the segment (cat4.3.2 = 92), the cabin is class-leading quiet (93), available 22-way front seats add ventilation and massage (cat4.3.1 = 90), adaptive cruise assist with stop-and-go and active lane assist reduce highway fatigue (cat3.2.5 = 86), and standard HD Matrix LED headlights (94) drop night-driving fatigue. ~477 mi combined range on the 21.7-gal tank (cat2.2.1) keeps stops infrequent. Trails the BMW 7 Series slightly on absolute range (~620 mi hwy) and on hands-free driving (cat3.2.6 = 15) versus BMW's Highway Assistant.

Outdoor & adventure capability52
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

quattro AWD is standard across the range (cat1.3.1 = 97) with self-locking center differential, and the adaptive air suspension can lift the car briefly for gravel or snow. Held back by low ground clearance (~4.9 in default), no US tow rating, no factory roof-rail or hitch accessory, and a long-wheelbase footprint that hurts approach/departure angles. Genuinely pavement-oriented despite the standard AWD.

Gear & luggage flexibility35
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

12.5 cu ft trunk is small for a full-size luxury flagship — smaller than the compact A4 and 35% below the BMW 7 Series' 19.2 cu ft. Rear seatback is fixed with only a narrow ski pass-through (no 40/20/40 or fold-flat option), no frunk, no factory roof rails, no factory hitch, no underfloor storage tray. One of the A8's real ownership weaknesses.

9Driving ExperienceGrades above the middle of the scale.2.84B-
Handling & agility78
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard adaptive air suspension and Quattro deliver composed, planted handling for a 4,700+ lb full-size sedan, and reviewers note the A8 'can carve up a winding road with gusto' when pushed. Body control is very good but tuning prioritizes comfort — noticeably less agile than the BMW 7 Series (rated 82) and roughly on par with the S-Class.

Steering feel68
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers describe the electromechanical steering as 'lazily geared in general and yet precise enough, perfectly in keeping with the car's role' — accurate on-center with natural weight build-up, but heavily filtered and light. Consistent with the A8's quiet-luxury tuning; less communicative than the A6 or BMW 3 Series.

Braking confidence76
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Strong hardware sized for a 4,700+ lb flagship delivers confident stopping, but pedal tuning explicitly favors smoothness over urgency: 'town driving feels relaxed rather than jumpy.' No fade issues reported, but the calibration lacks the linear directness of the BMW 7 or the outright bite of sportier rivals.

Powertrain smoothness & response84
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 3.0T V6 (335 hp / 369 lb-ft) with 48V mild-hybrid assist paired to an 8-speed Tiptronic torque-converter automatic is silky and effortless — 0–60 in ~5.4–5.6 seconds without drama. Tip-in is well-calibrated for a luxury flagship and stop/start is smoother than Audi's DCT-equipped cars. Not quite the class-leading ZF 8HP + B58 combo in the 7 Series but very close.

Drivetrain noise & vibration87
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Cabin isolation is a signature A8 strength. Extensive sound deadening, laminated glass, and the aluminum spaceframe combine to hush wind, road, and drivetrain noise; the turbo V6 emits only a distant, refined hum under load. Not silent like an EV, but among the quietest ICE flagships.

Turning circle
40.4 ft (38.7 ft with Dynamic all-wheel steering, $5,300 Executive Plus package)
0/100
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

US A8 is L-wheelbase only; volume Premium Plus trim ships without Dynamic all-wheel steering, so the representative figure is ~40.4 ft — just outside the sedan band. Executive Plus package adds rear-wheel steering and drops the circle to ~38.7 ft.

Driving position & ergonomics86
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

22-way power front seats with massage, huge steering/seat adjustment range, and a low-set command position deliver a class-appropriate driving environment. Twin-screen MMI Touch buries some climate/audio functions in menus — a small ergonomic drag — but Audi's haptic feedback and menu structure remain easier to use than BMW iDrive 8.5. Ingress/egress is good for a low sedan.

Fun-to-drive factor68
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The A8 is explicitly the 'quiet flagship' of the segment — 'the full-size sedan for people who like their luxury quiet and their speed subtle.' Effortlessly quick and refined but not emotionally engaging; character-focused rivals (BMW 760i V8, S8, Genesis G90) sit above. Pleasant to cover ground in but forgettable when you take the long way home.

10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.23C
Standard equipment generosity76
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A8L 55 TFSI comes well-appointed at its ~$91K starting price: quattro AWD, adaptive air suspension, LED Matrix-design headlights, dual-touchscreen MMI, virtual cockpit, panoramic sunroof, Valcona leather, 18-way front seats, four-zone climate, and Audi Pre Sense driver assistance. Rear massage seats, executive rear package, B&O 3D audio, and driver-assistance plus remain expensive options — Genesis G90 bundles more at base for less money.

Feature value per dollar60
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At $90K+ starting and $110K+ typically-optioned, the A8L is fair value at best — Genesis G90 undercuts by ~$10K with more standard content, while S-Class and 7 Series command similar money but deliver more prestige and technology (Level 3 Drive Pilot on S-Class in select states, iDrive 8/9 on 7 Series). Poor-to-average value versus the segment leaders.

Trim & configuration breadth58
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Narrow US lineup: A8L 55 TFSI quattro is the sole mainstream trim (long-wheelbase only, no SWB), joined by the high-performance S8 sedan. No PHEV, no diesel, no EV variant (Audi's flagship EV is the separate e-tron GT). S-Class offers ICE, PHEV, Maybach and AMG variants; 7 Series adds the i7 EV — Audi's flagship lineup is markedly thinner.

Sales popularity & market acceptance30
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A8 sales in the US have declined into the low four figures annually — well behind Mercedes S-Class (largest seller in segment), BMW 7 Series/i7, and Genesis G90. Full-size luxury sedan volume has structurally shrunk as buyers move to Q8/Q7 crossovers and the segment shifts to EVs, and the A8 sits at the bottom end of that already-small pie.

Brand desirability & image78
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Audi remains a strong premium brand in the US — design-forward, tech-associated, quattro heritage — and the A8 is the halo sedan. That said, in the flagship-luxury conversation the A8 lacks the outright status of Mercedes S-Class or the presence of the current 7 Series, and the aging platform blunts the halo effect.

Deals & incentive availability84
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Late in its D5 lifecycle and moving slowly, the A8L commands meaningful buyer leverage: aggressive Audi Financial lease programs, loyalty/conquest cash, and negotiability off MSRP are routine. Better real-world deals available than on the newer 7 Series or refreshed S-Class, though incentives here also signal weak demand.

The D5-generation A8 launched globally for MY2019 and received a mid-cycle refresh for MY2022. By MY2026 the platform is 7+ years old and lagging on cabin-tech generation (single dual-touch MMI versus S-Class MBUX Hyperscreen and 7 Series iDrive 8.5), with an all-new (likely electrified) successor widely reported to be in development. Aging generation with replacement risk for late-cycle buyers.

Reviewers praise the A8L for interior craftsmanship, ride refinement on air suspension, and cabin quietness, but comparison tests in Car and Driver, MotorTrend, and Edmunds consistently favor the S-Class for tech and rear-seat opulence and the 7 Series for road presence and cabin theater. Well-reviewed and highly competent, but essentially never the pick of the class — no Car and Driver 10Best or NACTOY presence in recent years.
