The verdict

An honor-roll full-size luxury sedan, strong on technology and held back by ownership.

The 2026 BMW 7 Series is a rolling technology showcase with one of the best back seats money can buy — 44.4 inches of rear legroom, an optional 31.3-inch 8K theater screen, and a standard 14.9-inch curved display running iDrive 8.5. It drives with more composure than a 5,000-pound sedan has any right to, thanks to standard air suspension and rear-wheel steering. The catch is money: $101,975 for the volume 740i xDrive, 25 MPG combined on required premium, and roughly $71,000 gone to depreciation and maintenance over five years. Buy it if you want the flagship experience and can absorb the cost of ownership; lease it if you'd rather someone else eat the depreciation.

Strengths

  • A back seat that rivals a first-class cabin
  • Technology loadout with almost nothing left on the options sheet
  • Driver-assist hardware is standard, not an upsell

What holds it back

  • The price of entry, and then the depreciation
  • Thirsty, and only on premium
  • You pay for every service visit, on a short warranty

63/100
#10 of 49 in classCompare all →

Volume trim 740i xDrive uses the B58 3.0L turbo inline-6 with 48V mild-hybrid rated at 375 hp; range tops out at the 760i xDrive twin-turbo V8's 536 hp.

Torque
383 lb-ft (740i); 553 lb-ft (760i xDrive V8)
80/100
#12 of 49 in classCompare all →

740i's B58 delivers 383 lb-ft; V8-equipped 760i xDrive climbs to 553 lb-ft, and the 750e PHEV posts ~516 lb-ft of combined system torque.

0–60 mph time
5.2 s (740i xDrive); ~4.9 s (750e PHEV); 4.2 s (760i xDrive V8)
66/100
#13 of 49 in classCompare all →

Volume 740i xDrive is BMW-quoted at 5.2 s to 60 mph; the 760i xDrive V8 drops to 4.2 s while the 750e PHEV lands in the mid-4-second range.

Powertrain refinement90
#10 of 49 in classCompare all →

The B58 turbo inline-6 with 48V mild-hybrid is widely praised as one of the smoothest sixes in production; V8 and PHEV variants add creamy off-idle response and near-silent EV-only city driving.

Transmission behavior92
#4 of 49 in classCompare all →

ZF-sourced 8HP 8-speed automatic is a segment benchmark for shift crispness and gear-selection intelligence; hybrid variants use the same case with an integrated e-motor and preserve the smooth calibration.

AWD/4WD availability80
#16 of 49 in classCompare all →

xDrive AWD is standard on 750e and 760i and optional on 740i (RWD standard); the rear-biased system is highly sophisticated for on-road use but a luxury sedan naturally lacks off-road hardware like low range or lockers.

Powertrain lineup breadth80
#3 of 49 in classCompare all →

Three distinct powertrains within the 7 Series nameplate — turbo I6 mild-hybrid, twin-turbo V8, and I6-based PHEV — plus a sister EV (i7) sharing showroom space; broader than most Full-Size Luxury rivals.

2Efficiency & RangeOne of the 7 Series's weakest categories.0.09F
Combined fuel economy
25 MPG combined (740i xDrive); 57 MPGe combined (750e xDrive PHEV); 20 MPG (760i xDrive V8)
29/100
#39 of 49 in classCompare all →

740i xDrive is the volume trim: 3.0L turbo I6 with 48V mild hybrid, 375 hp, AWD standard. EPA rates it at 25 MPG combined. Ratings unchanged from 2024-2025 G70; 2026 retains the same powertrain lineup.

City fuel economy
22 MPG city (740i xDrive); 17 MPG (760i xDrive V8)
27/100
#39 of 49 in classCompare all →

EPA city figure for the 740i xDrive volume trim. The 4.4L V8 760i xDrive drops to 17 MPG city.

Highway fuel economy
29 MPG hwy (740i xDrive); 25 MPG (760i xDrive V8)
24/100
#42 of 49 in classCompare all →

EPA highway figure for the 740i xDrive volume trim. Modest for a ~5,100 lb full-size luxury sedan on a premium-fuel tune.

Driving range
~483 mi total (740i xDrive: 19.3 gal tank × 25 MPG); ~460 mi combined (750e PHEV, gas+battery)
52/100
#9 of 49 in classCompare all →

19.3 US gal fuel capacity and 25 MPG combined yields ~483 mi practical range for the 740i xDrive. PHEV total range is similar with the added flexibility of 32 mi of pure-electric driving.

Estimated annual fuel cost
~$2,850/yr (740i xDrive on premium); ~$1,950/yr (750e PHEV blended); ~$3,500/yr (760i V8)
16/100
#42 of 49 in classCompare all →

EPA fuel-cost estimate at 15,000 mi/yr on premium (~$4.75/gal 2026 average) at 25 MPG combined comes to ~$2,850/yr for the 740i xDrive. Above the top of the sedan band since this is a heavy premium-fuel luxury sedan.

Fuel requirements25
#44 of 49 in classCompare all →

All 2026 7 Series trims require premium unleaded (91+ octane) — no regular-fuel or E85 option. The 750e PHEV partially offsets this via home charging for ~30 mi daily EV driving, but the gas engine still needs premium once the battery is depleted.

3SafetyOne of the 7 Series's strongest categories.3.61A-
NHTSA overall rating
Not rated by NHTSA — 4.5★ estimated from segment norms
75/100
#32 of 49 in classCompare all →

NHTSA has not published overall crash-test results for the current-generation (G70, MY2023+) 7 Series; a 4.5-star estimate is applied consistent with full-size luxury sedan norms and BMW's structural results in comparable programs.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness72
#18 of 49 in classCompare all →

Current-gen 7 Series is not on the IIHS Top Safety Pick or TSP+ list; IIHS has not completed a comprehensive test set on the G70 platform. BMW's recent flagships have generally earned Good crashworthiness scores where tested, but the lack of a completed award-eligible test slate and typical Acceptable/Marginal headlight ratings on volume trims keep it out of TSP contention.

Standard ADAS suite breadth90
#7 of 49 in classCompare all →

The 2026 7 Series makes BMW's Active Driving Assistant standard across all trims: forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking (pedestrian/cyclist), lane departure warning with lane keeping, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and braking, and Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go. Only Highway Assistant/hands-free is optional via the Driving Assistance Professional Package.

Automatic emergency braking performance82
#13 of 49 in classCompare all →

BMW's front collision warning with city collision mitigation is generally reviewed as smooth and effective in daylight vehicle-to-vehicle scenarios and includes pedestrian and cyclist detection with day/night operation. No published IIHS Superior/Advanced front-crash-prevention rating exists for the current 7 Series, so credit lands mid-upper band.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage90
#3 of 49 in classCompare all →

Active Blind Spot Detection with steering intervention and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert with autonomous braking are standard on all 2026 7 Series trims, plus Safe Exit warning for opening doors into cyclists. Coverage is class-leading for a full-size luxury sedan.

Lane keeping & centering88
#3 of 49 in classCompare all →

Standard Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keeping Assistant plus Steering and Lane Control Assistant provides confident lane centering with minimal ping-ponging in reviewer testing; BMW's system remains one of the smoother implementations in the luxury segment.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist88
#3 of 49 in classCompare all →

Standard Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go handles full speed range with smooth braking and quick resume. When paired with the Driving Assistance Professional Package, the combined Highway Assistant provides refined highway centering and following behavior consistently praised by reviewers.

Hands-free driving availability90
#2 of 49 in classCompare all →

The 2026 7 Series offers BMW Highway Assistant as part of the Driving Assistance Professional Package — hands-free lane centering on approximately 130,000 miles of mapped divided highways in the US and Canada at speeds up to 85 mph, with driver-attention camera. Coverage is competitive with Ford BlueCruise; slightly behind GM Super Cruise in total mapped mileage but ahead in top speed.

Headlight performance92
#3 of 49 in classCompare all →

Adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beam are standard across all 2026 7 Series trims. BMW Iconic Glow illuminated kidney grille and available Swarovski-crystal split-headlight design use adaptive LED tech with excellent low-beam reach and glare-free auto high beam. No IIHS Good rating on file, but hardware and reviewer feedback are consistently strong.

Outward visibility80
#2 of 49 in classCompare all →

Thick D-pillars and a high beltline typical of the G70 design limit natural rearward and rear-quarter visibility, but a standard rearview camera and available Parking Assistant Professional with Surround View, 3D View, and Remote Theater View camera provide comprehensive electronic compensation. Reviewers note visibility is average for the class with strong camera support.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability75
#11 of 49 in classCompare all →

The 7 Series has generous rear-seat legroom and wide rear-door openings that make loading rear-facing seats easy, and LATCH anchors are present in both outboard rear positions. Anchors are covered/recessed which requires some digging, and the deeply bolstered rear seats can complicate three-across installation on the executive-lounge configuration.

4Space & ComfortOne of the 7 Series's strongest categories.3.96A+
Seating capacity
5 seats (4-seat Executive Lounge rear-bucket config optional)
100/100
#1 of 49 in classCompare all →

Standard 3-across rear bench seats five; a 4-seat Executive Lounge package with individual reclining rear buckets is optional.

Front headroom
41.6 in (40.7 with Panoramic Sky Lounge roof)
100/100
#1 of 49 in classCompare all →

Front headroom is well above the sedan norm even accounting for the optional glass roof; the G70 platform prioritizes cabin space.

Front legroom
41.6 in
40/100
#37 of 49 in classCompare all →

Ample but not class-leading front legroom; falls just above the middle of the sedan normalization band.

Rear headroom
38.9 in
97/100
#2 of 49 in classCompare all →

Rear headroom sits at the top of the sedan band despite the long roofline, benefiting from the LWB platform.

Rear legroom
44.4 in (LWB is only US-market wheelbase)
100/100
#1 of 49 in classCompare all →

Class-leading rear legroom — the US 7 Series is sold only in long-wheelbase form, giving limo-grade second-row space competitive with S-Class LWB and A8 L.

Cargo/trunk volume
17.7 cu ft
77/100
#5 of 49 in classCompare all →

Trunk volume is generous for the full-size luxury sedan class and unchanged between the 740i / 760i xDrive and 750e xDrive PHEV powertrains.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions74
#8 of 49 in classCompare all →

Competitive everyday storage — deep center console, generous door bins, wireless charging tray — but no genuinely standout innovation (no frunk on ICE, no hidden compartments beyond segment norm). The Interaction Bar and crystal touchpoints are style features, not storage wins.

Seat comfort90
#5 of 49 in classCompare all →

Comfort/Multi-Contour front seats with massage widely available; optional Executive Lounge rear seats recline up to 42.5° with power ottoman and are among the most comfortable rear seats in any production sedan — repeatedly cited as class-leading.

Ride quality88
#7 of 49 in classCompare all →

Standard two-axle air suspension with electronically controlled dampers, plus available Integral Active Steering and Executive Drive Pro active roll stabilization, deliver a plush yet controlled ride that leads the sport-luxury flagships even if S-Class edges it on outright isolation.

Cabin quietness84
#18 of 49 in classCompare all →

Acoustic laminated glass and heavy sound insulation make the cabin very quiet at highway speed; still narrowly trails S-Class and EQS on absolute decibel readings in independent testing.

Climate & comfort features93
#4 of 49 in classCompare all →

Rich comfort loadout: standard 4-zone climate, heated front seats, heated steering wheel; optional ventilated/massaging front and rear seats, heated armrests, Bowers & Wilkins Diamond audio, and the unique 31.3-inch 8K Theatre Screen for rear passengers — one of the most feature-loaded rear cabins in the segment.

5Cost of OwnershipThe 7 Series's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Base MSRP
$99,675 (740i, incl. $995 destination)
0/100
#30 of 49 in classCompare all →

Six-figure entry point is well above the sedan normalization band (22k–55k), so purchase-price economics are worst-in-class outside the ultra-luxury cohort.

Volume-Trim Price
$101,975 (740i xDrive, best-selling config)
0/100
#29 of 49 in classCompare all →

740i xDrive is the volume configuration in most US markets (AWD in luxury full-size); MSRP sits far outside the sedan band.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$12,000 over 5 years (BMW dropped included maintenance in 2020)
0/100
#45 of 49 in classCompare all →

BMW no longer includes scheduled maintenance; luxury full-size ICE sedans with complex electronics, air suspension, and turbo I6/V8 powertrains land at the high end of Edmunds/CarEdge 5-year projections.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~42% of MSRP after 5 years
23/100
#31 of 49 in classCompare all →

Full-size luxury flagships depreciate steeply; the 7 Series historically loses 55–60% of MSRP in five years per KBB and iSeeCars residual data — well below segment leaders like Genesis G90 or Tesla Model S.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#9 of 49 in classCompare all →

BMW's standard 4-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty is mid-pack for luxury — better than 3/36 mainstream but shorter than Genesis (5/60) and Jaguar (5/60).

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (PHEV HV battery 8 yr / 100,000 mi)
0/100
#26 of 49 in classCompare all →

BMW's powertrain warranty matches its basic 4/50 term — one of the shortest in the luxury class and below the sedan normalization band. Only the 750e PHEV's high-voltage battery gets separate 8-year federal coverage.

Complimentary maintenance & perks40
#45 of 49 in classCompare all →

BMW ended its complimentary BMW Ultimate Care scheduled-maintenance program on 2020+ models; buyers now pay for service upfront (BMW Ultimate Care+ is an optional pre-paid package). Roadside assistance is included for 4 yr / unlimited miles and connected services carry limited trials — modest perks by luxury standards, well below Genesis, Volvo, Lexus.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$71,146 (≈$59,146 depreciation + $12,000 maintenance)
0/100
#34 of 49 in classCompare all →

$101,975 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (42% retained, or about $42,830) leaves about $59,146 in depreciation. Add the projected $12,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $71,146 in total.

6Reliability & QualityGrades above the middle of the scale.3.46B+
Predicted reliability78
#10 of 49 in classCompare all →

Consumer Reports has rated recent BMW 7 Series predicted reliability as average-to-above-average, with tech/electronics (iDrive 8.5, curved display, complex driver-assist stack) being the primary risk area on the G70 platform. J.D. Power quality studies place BMW mid-pack among luxury brands. Powertrains themselves are proven; software and infotainment glitches are the recurring theme in owner surveys.

Brand reliability track record76
#15 of 49 in classCompare all →

BMW ranks in the upper half of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings (typically 6th–10th) and mid-pack in the J.D. Power VDS. Solid but well behind Lexus, Toyota, and now Genesis, and comparable to Audi and better than Mercedes-Benz in recent studies.

Recall & TSB history76
#6 of 49 in classCompare all →

The G70-generation 7 Series (launched MY2023) has had a handful of NHTSA recalls covering seat-belt/airbag components, backup-camera software, and Integrated Braking System firmware — typical for a first-generation tech-heavy flagship but nothing catastrophic like fire or rollaway. TSB volume around the iDrive 8.5 / OS 8.5 software stack is noticeably higher than for the outgoing G12.

Powertrain durability reputation86
#9 of 49 in classCompare all →

The 740i's B58 3.0L turbo inline-six is one of the most durable modern BMW engines with a proven high-mileage record, and the 760i's S68 4.4L twin-turbo V8 (with 48V mild-hybrid) is an evolution of the well-known N63/S63 family with improved cooling. The 750e xDrive PHEV uses BMW's mature Gen5 hybrid architecture already validated in the X5 xDrive50e. ZF 8-speed automatic is best-in-class for longevity.

Interior material quality94
#4 of 49 in classCompare all →

Flagship-tier cabin with standard Merino leather, cashmere-wool upholstery option, crystal-effect controls (iDrive knob, start button, gear selector), 31.3-inch rear Theater Screen, ambient-light interior panels, and knurled/anodized switchgear. Reviewers rate it competitive with or ahead of the Mercedes S-Class and Audi A8 on outright material richness; only the Rolls-Royce Ghost, Genesis G90, and Cadillac Celestiq sit clearly above.

Fit & finish88
#10 of 49 in classCompare all →

Panel gaps, door-close feel, and switchgear damping are consistently praised in reviews and remain a BMW flagship strength. The mark against it is not physical assembly but software polish: iDrive 8.5 lag, occasional touchscreen freezes, and driver-assist quirks appear in owner complaints and pull the initial-quality signal down from otherwise class-leading assembly.

Dealer & service network86
#7 of 49 in classCompare all →

BMW operates roughly 350 US dealerships with strong metro and secondary-market coverage, and includes 3-year/36,000-mile BMW Ultimate Care complimentary maintenance. Service satisfaction in J.D. Power's CSI is above the luxury average though slightly behind Lexus and Cadillac. 7 Series buyers also get concierge-level treatment through most flagship dealers.

Parts availability & repair cost65
#23 of 49 in classCompare all →

Parts availability through BMW's network is generally strong, but flagship-specific components (Theater Screen, crystal switchgear, air-suspension modules, integrated braking system) are expensive and largely dealer-only. RepairPal and long-term ownership data consistently place the 7 Series among the most expensive full-size luxury sedans to maintain out of warranty, comparable to the S-Class and above the LS or G90.

7Technology & InfotainmentThe 7 Series's best-graded category.4.00A+
Touchscreen size
14.9 in (part of BMW Curved Display, standard on all trims)
93/100
#8 of 49 in classCompare all →

The G70 7 Series uses the BMW Curved Display which pairs a 14.9-inch central touchscreen with a 12.3-inch digital cluster; standard across 740i, 760i xDrive, and 750e xDrive.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness82
#16 of 49 in classCompare all →

iDrive 8.5 with QuickSelect runs on fast hardware with excellent graphics and touch response, though reviewers still flag deep menus and reduced physical HVAC controls. Rotary controller retained (unlike some rivals) helps daily usability.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto95
#1 of 49 in classCompare all →

Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard on every 7 Series trim, integrated with the curved display.

Voice control & native navigation84
#13 of 49 in classCompare all →

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant supports natural-language commands ("Hey BMW") and the native nav offers cloud-based routing, AR video guidance in the central display, and Learning Navigation; among the better voice/nav packages in the segment.

Audio system quality91
#10 of 49 in classCompare all →

Standard Harman Kardon Surround Sound (17 speakers) is strong; the optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround (1,965W, 36 speakers, headliner and headrest exciters) is one of the best factory audio systems in any car.

Digital instrument cluster88
#18 of 49 in classCompare all →

Standard 12.3-inch full-digital cluster within the curved display; sharp and configurable via My Modes, though layout customization is less flexible than Audi Virtual Cockpit.

OTA update capability86
#10 of 49 in classCompare all →

BMW Remote Software Upgrade delivers regular whole-vehicle OTA updates covering infotainment, driving assistance, and feature additions (e.g., ChatGPT-integrated voice); scope is broad though update cadence trails Tesla and Lucid.

Companion app & remote functions83
#14 of 49 in classCompare all →

My BMW App is polished with remote climate, lock/unlock, vehicle finder, trip data, and Digital Key Plus support; Remote Engine Start requires the ConnectedDrive subscription after the trial, which knocks it below best-in-class.

Charging ports & device power86
#6 of 49 in classCompare all →

Multiple USB-C ports front and rear, standard wireless charging pad, and 12V outlets; Executive Lounge Rear seating adds rear touchscreens and additional USB-C, but no household AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access92
#5 of 49 in classCompare all →

Comfort Access proximity entry standard, Digital Key Plus (UWB) supports iPhone and select Android/Pixel Watch devices with hands-free unlock, and automatic soft-close doors (with Executive Package) can open/close via touch or app.

Camera & parking aids89
#9 of 49 in classCompare all →

Parking Assistant Professional standard: high-resolution 360-degree surround view, Reversing Assistant that records the last 50m of travel, and Remote Parking Assistant to move the car via the phone.

Head-up display availability91
#4 of 49 in classCompare all →

Large full-color Head-Up Display is standard on all 2026 7 Series trims, projecting nav, speed, driver-assist status, and media info; among the largest and clearest HUDs in the segment.

8Use-Case FitOne of the 7 Series's weakest categories.2.19C
Kid & car-seat practicality82
#1 of 49 in classCompare all →

Wide-opening rear doors, LATCH on rear outboard seats, and a huge 19.2 cu ft trunk make stroller/gear loading easy; contoured, reclining executive-style rear seats make rear-facing car seat fit fiddlier than a plain bench.

Family safety package80
#19 of 49 in classCompare all →

Standard Active Driving Assistant (FCW + AEB, lane departure, blind-spot, rear-cross-traffic) plus available Driving Assistant Professional with Highway Assistant hands-off; neither IIHS nor NHTSA publish crash tests for the low-volume 7 Series.

Family road-trip comfort93
#2 of 49 in classCompare all →

Segment benchmark: 44.4 in rear legroom, optional Executive Lounge with reclining rear passenger seat, optional 31.3-inch Theater Screen with 8K rear entertainment, quad-zone climate, panoramic Sky Lounge roof, and 19.2 cu ft trunk swallow multi-family luggage.

Daily driving ease87
#6 of 49 in classCompare all →

Very refined 48V mild-hybrid inline-six or PHEV drivetrain, adaptive cruise standard, optional Highway Assistant enables hands-off freeway driving up to 85 mph in the US, massaging front seats and superb NVH make traffic slogs relaxing; imposing footprint is the only friction.

Commuting cost efficiency72
#18 of 49 in classCompare all →

740i xDrive returns EPA 24/32/27 mpg on required premium fuel; 750e xDrive PHEV EPA ~64 MPGe combined with ~35 mi electric range dramatically lowers commuting cost for chargeable owners, but the base gas 740i drinks premium and tires/maintenance are luxury-tier expensive.

Parking & maneuverability74
#12 of 49 in classCompare all →

212.2 in long and 76.8 in wide is genuinely large, but standard Integral Active Steering (rear-wheel steering up to 3.5°) cuts the turning circle to about 40 ft and Parking Assistant Plus with 360-degree cameras and Reversing Assistant handle tight garages.

Work capability12
#40 of 49 in classCompare all →

Not rated to tow in the US, no bed, no meaningful payload beyond passengers and luggage; a luxury sedan is not a work tool.

Durability for work duty22
#39 of 49 in classCompare all →

Delicate crystal/wood/metal-finish interior, air suspension, and low front fascia are easily damaged by trade abuse; BMW dealer labor rates and complex electronics push repair costs well above segment norms.

Jobsite & upfit practicality12
#32 of 49 in classCompare all →

No bed, no tie-down provisions, no factory upfit ecosystem, no 120V outlets in cargo area, no washable interior surfaces; sedan trunk with velour trim is the antithesis of a work vehicle.

Long-distance comfort & range91

740i xDrive delivers ~620 mi highway range on its 19.5-gal tank at 32 mpg hwy, cabin is exceptionally quiet with acoustic glass and standard two-axle air suspension, front seats offer massage, and optional Highway Assistant meaningfully reduces highway-driver fatigue.

Outdoor & adventure capability45

xDrive AWD is standard on 750e/M760e and available on 740i, and the air suspension raises the car briefly for gravel/snow; ground clearance is still only about 5.7 in, roof rails aren't offered, and there is no factory hitch — genuinely pavement-oriented.

Gear & luggage flexibility62

19.2 cu ft trunk is best-in-full-size-luxury-sedan, but no factory hitch, no roof rails, and 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats come only via optional package, limiting long-object hauling like skis or long lumber.

Handling & agility82
#8 of 49 in classCompare all →

For a 5,000+ lb full-size flagship, the G70 7 Series handles with surprising composure thanks to standard adaptive suspension and available rear-wheel steering. Not as agile as the 3/5 Series, but among the best in its class, ahead of the S-Class and Audi A8 in body control per reviewer consensus.

Steering feel72
#19 of 49 in classCompare all →

BMW's modern electric power steering in the 7 Series is precise and accurately weighted but heavily filtered — reviewers consistently note the lack of communication versus older 7 Series or smaller BMWs. Comfort/Sport modes only marginally change feel.

Braking confidence80
#11 of 49 in classCompare all →

Large 4-piston front calipers deliver strong, fade-resistant stops with a firm, progressive pedal. No regen-blending complexity like the i7 helps pedal linearity. M Sport package upgrades brakes further.

Powertrain smoothness & response90

The B58 3.0L turbo inline-six in the 740i (volume trim) is one of the smoothest sixes in production, paired with a class-leading ZF 8-speed automatic and 48V mild-hybrid assist. Tip-in is well-calibrated; stop/start is quick and smooth. 760i V8 and 750e PHEV are similarly refined.

Drivetrain noise & vibration87
#13 of 49 in classCompare all →

Inline-six is nearly silent at cruise and emits a subdued, refined tone under load. Extensive sound insulation and available acoustic glass keep NVH exceptionally low. Not as silent as the electric i7 but well ahead of most ICE competitors.

Long wheelbase makes low-speed maneuvering the 7's weakest dynamic trait; standard Integral Active Steering (rear-axle steering) mitigates it substantially but figure still trails the sedan band top end.

Driving position & ergonomics88
#1 of 49 in classCompare all →

Massive seat/steering adjustment range including 20-way multi-contour front seats with massage. Curved display and head-up display are class-leading. Main criticism: touch-heavy climate/comfort controls buried in iDrive 8.5 slow simple tasks. Ingress/egress excellent for a low sedan.

Fun-to-drive factor80
#10 of 49 in classCompare all →

The 740i inline-six has real character and the 760i V8 is genuinely quick and engaging, but the 7 Series prioritizes comfort and isolation over enthusiast engagement. Enjoyable to cover ground in but never a 3 Series back-road toy.

740i base includes the 14.9-inch curved display with iDrive 8.5, panoramic sky lounge roof, 4-zone climate, 20-inch wheels, Harman Kardon audio, ambient lighting, and BMW driving assistant — a very generous full-size luxury spec that undercuts S-Class packaging.

Feature value per dollar72
#26 of 49 in classCompare all →

740i (~$97K) is competitive on tech and luxury content, but 760i xDrive (~$127K) and M760e PHEV pricing sits near S-Class territory while Genesis G90 delivers similar content for tens of thousands less — fair but not standout value.

Trim & configuration breadth85
#5 of 49 in classCompare all →

Three ICE/electrified powertrains (740i I6 mild-hybrid RWD/xDrive, 760i xDrive V8, M760e xDrive PHEV) plus BMW Individual, M Sport, and Executive packages provide wide flexibility, though no short-wheelbase alternative is offered in the US.

Sales popularity & market acceptance60
#23 of 49 in classCompare all →

Full-size luxury sedan segment continues to shrink as buyers move to SUVs; 7 Series US volume trails Mercedes S-Class and Genesis G90, with the polarizing split-headlight styling further limiting broad acceptance.

Brand desirability & image88
#11 of 49 in classCompare all →

BMW ranks among the strongest global luxury brands and the 7 Series serves as its full-size flagship, conferring halo prestige and strong ownership pride despite styling controversy.

Deals & incentive availability74
#31 of 49 in classCompare all →

Softer segment demand means dealers regularly offer meaningful lease supports and finance-rate incentives on 740i inventory; less aggressive on 760i and M760e but negotiability well below MSRP is common.

Model freshness68
#23 of 49 in classCompare all →

Current G70 generation launched for MY2023, so 2026 is the fourth year on the platform with no LCI mid-cycle refresh yet — current but past the freshness peak, with a refresh expected in the next cycle.

Critical reception & awards75
#25 of 49 in classCompare all →

Reviewers praise the interior tech, powertrain refinement, and ride quality but criticize the polarizing split-headlight styling and high pricing; earns Editors' Choice recognition in some years but rarely wins comparison tests against S-Class or Genesis G90.
