The verdict

An honor-roll full-size luxury sedan, strong on technology and held back by ownership.

The 2026 S-Class is still the reference point for what a luxury sedan can be: 43.8 inches of rear legroom, a whisper-quiet cabin on standard air suspension, the best head-up display in production, and the only SAE Level 3 eyes-off driving system sold in the US. What you pay for it is brutal — $121,450 to start, roughly $140,000 as most buyers actually order it, 23 MPG combined on required premium, and about 38% of that sticker left after five years. Buy it if the experience is the point and you lease or write the depreciation off; think hard if you plan to own it out of warranty, because repair costs and a below-average reliability record are the two places this car bites back.

Jump to scores

Strengths

  • Back-seat space that reads as a limousine
  • Cabin quality and ride comfort set the class benchmark
  • Technology that actually leads, not just impresses

What holds it back

  • Depreciation is the single largest cost of owning one
  • Fuel economy is poor and premium is mandatory
  • Out-of-warranty repair costs are near the top of the market

No full BEV in the S-Class line (that role goes to the EQS).

EPA combined for the volume S 500 4MATIC (I6 with 48V mild-hybrid) is 23 MPG; V8 S 580 drops to ~19 combined and the S 580e PHEV lifts to 61 MPGe when running on stored electricity.

City fuel economy

18/100
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volume S 500 4MATIC rated at 20 MPG city by EPA; heavy full-size platform limits stop-and-go efficiency despite 48V mild-hybrid assist.

Highway fuel economy
29 MPG highway (S 500 4MATIC; S 580e 68 MPGe)
24/100
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

EPA highway rating for the volume S 500 4MATIC is 29 MPG — respectable for a ~4,900-lb full-size luxury sedan but modest against the sedan-band 26–58 MPG normalization.

Driving range
~460 mi (20 gal tank × 23 MPG, S 500 4MATIC)
46/100
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

20-gallon tank × 23 MPG combined yields roughly 460 miles of range on the S 500 4MATIC; the S 580e PHEV adds 47 miles of EPA electric range on top of the gas tank.

Estimated annual fuel cost
~$2,850/yr (S 500 4MATIC, premium fuel, 15k mi/yr)
16/100
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At 23 combined MPG on required 91-octane premium and EPA's 15,000-mi/yr assumption, annual fuel spend lands near $2,850, at the top end of the sedan band; the S 580 V8 pushes higher, and the S 580e PHEV can cut this materially if regularly plugged in.

Fuel requirements35
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

All gas S-Class trims require 91-octane premium unleaded per Mercedes-Benz. The S 580e PHEV also requires premium and needs Level 2 charging (~2.75 hr to full at 240V) to realize its cost advantage; there are no regular-fuel, E85, or diesel options.

NHTSA overall rating
5 stars (inferred — NHTSA has not tested the W223 generation)
100/100
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA has not published overall crash-test results for the W223 S-Class (2021+). Inferred at 5 stars — the flagship's structure, comprehensive standard restraint tech (PRE-SAFE Impulse Side, center airbag, rear-seat frontal airbags), and prior-generation W222 5-star record support the top rating.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness70
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS has not completed a full test slate on the W223 S-Class and it is not on the 2025 or 2026 Top Safety Pick lists — large luxury flagships are routinely untested. Mercedes' recent sedans that have been tested have earned Good crashworthiness results, but the absence of a completed award-eligible battery keeps this out of TSP contention.

Standard ADAS suite breadth92
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Unlike the C-Class and E-Class where the core L2 features are locked behind the optional Driver Assistance Package, the S-Class ships the full suite standard: Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC (adaptive cruise), Active Steering Assist (lane centering), Active Lane Change Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist with braking, Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function, Active Emergency Stop Assist, PRE-SAFE PLUS, Surround View 360 camera, and exit warning. No meaningful safety feature is trim-gated.

Automatic emergency braking performance85
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic and Turning Function covers vehicle, pedestrian, cyclist, and intersection scenarios with day/night operation, backed by the S-Class's front stereo camera and radar array. IIHS has not tested the W223, so credit rests on Mercedes' consistently Good/Superior AEB ratings across the current W206 C-Class and W214 E-Class families.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage90
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Active Blind Spot Assist with braking intervention, rear cross-traffic alert with braking, and exit warning are all standard on the S-Class — no package required. Coverage is comprehensive and matches or exceeds the BMW 7 Series in this category.

Lane keeping & centering90
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Active Steering Assist is standard and delivers class-leading lane centering — route-based curve prediction reads mapped curves and roundabouts to slow ahead of them, and reviewers consistently praise its smoothness and lack of ping-ponging. On the flagship it is paired with Active Lane Change Assist that executes signaled lane changes semi-autonomously.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist92
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC provides full-range adaptive cruise with stop-and-go, integrated with route-based speed adaptation that reads posted limits, curves, roundabouts, and toll plazas. Combined with standard Active Steering Assist, the S-Class delivers a refined highway-assist experience that reviewers rank at or near the top of the luxury class.

Hands-free driving availability82
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The S-Class is one of only two vehicles in the US to offer Drive Pilot — the only certified SAE Level 3 conditional-automation system on sale. Drivers can legally take their eyes off the road while the car handles congested-traffic driving. Coverage is narrow (approved highways in California and Nevada, capped at ~40 mph in traffic behind a lead vehicle), so operational domain is smaller than BMW Highway Assistant or GM Super Cruise, but the L3 designation puts it in a category of one.

Headlight performance95
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The S-Class offers Digital Light — a projector-based system with roughly 1.3 million micromirrors per headlamp that shapes glare-free adaptive high beam and can project lane and warning symbols onto the road. Multibeam LED is standard on the base configuration with adaptive high-beam assist. IIHS has not rated the W223 explicitly, but the Digital Light hardware is class-defining.

Outward visibility80
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Natural sightlines are compromised by the S-Class's long hood, high beltline, and thick D-pillars typical of a full-size flagship, but standard Surround View 360 camera, front/rear parking sensors with Active Parking Assist, and available augmented-reality nav overlays give strong electronic compensation. Rear-axle steering (standard on S 580e and above) also reduces low-speed maneuvering blind zones by tightening the turning circle.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability78
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The S-Class offers generous rear-door openings, class-leading rear legroom, and two full outboard LATCH sets with a center top tether — installing a rear-facing seat is straightforward. Anchors are covered/recessed like most premium Mercedes sedans, requiring a bit of digging, and the deeply bolstered Executive rear-seat option can complicate a three-across install.

#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Trunk is modest for the exterior footprint — space is compromised by the sloping decklid and 48-volt mild-hybrid packaging (the S 580e PHEV loses further volume to the traction battery).

In-cabin storage & clever solutions78
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Center console with dual-hinge armrest, deep bin with standard wireless charging, covered stow tray under the OLED display and 4-zone climate controls; rear seats add a fold-down center armrest with storage and optional executive tray tables. Well-executed but no standout innovation beyond the class norm.

Seat comfort95
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard multicontour front seats with ventilation, heating and Energizing massage; optional Executive Rear Seat Package adds reclining rear thrones with calf rests, heated armrests and warmed seat belts. Consistently cited as the benchmark for long-distance comfort in any sedan.

Ride quality95
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

AIRMATIC air suspension and adaptive dampers are standard, rear-axle steering is available, and E-Active Body Control (optional) actively counteracts body motion. Reviewers describe the ride as isolating harshness while retaining composure through corners — a class benchmark.

Cabin quietness92
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Acoustic laminated glass on the windshield and front doors is standard, and the mild-hybrid inline-six is quiet at cruise. Reviewers describe the S-Class as 'whisper quiet even at highway speeds' with minimal wind or road intrusion — a segment benchmark alongside the BMW 7 Series and Lucid Air.

Climate & comfort features92
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard four-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, Energizing Comfort massage, and 64-color ambient lighting; available Warmth Comfort Package adds heated armrests/door panels and heated rear seats, and Executive Rear Seat packages add rear massage, ventilation and warmed seat belts.

The volume-selling configuration is the S 580 4MATIC — biturbo V8 with EQ Boost — starting near $133K and typically ordered with Warmth & Comfort ($1,290), Executive Rear ($6,300), Driver Assistance ($1,950), and Acoustic Comfort ($1,100) packages, landing $138K–$143K delivered. S 580e PHEV and Maybach S-Class transactions climb well past $180K.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$9,800 over 5 years
0/100
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Flagship German luxury sedans sit at the very top of the sedan maintenance band. Standard AIRMATIC air suspension, rear-axle steering, MBUX Hyperscreen electronics, and biturbo V8 service (Service A/B $700–$1,100 each at MB dealers) push years 4–5 into heavy out-of-warranty repair territory. Edmunds and CarEdge peg the S-Class among the priciest sedans to maintain.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~38% of MSRP retained after 5 years
10/100
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The S-Class is one of the steepest depreciating vehicles in the US market — ~60–65% loss over 5 years is typical. Heavy lease incentives, six-figure sticker shock in year 1, and softening ultra-luxury sedan demand versus the GLS/Maybach GLS SUV all compound. Tracks BMW 7 Series and Audi A8 residuals.

Mercedes-Benz New Vehicle Limited Warranty is 4 years / 50,000 miles for all 2026 S-Class models. Mid-pack among luxury brands (matches BMW and Audi; trails Genesis's 5-yr/60k).

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (same as basic — no separate powertrain term; PHEV HV battery 10 yr / 100,000 mi federally)

#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes does not offer a separate extended powertrain warranty; both basic and powertrain coverage end at 4 years / 50,000 miles, below the sedan normalization floor of 5 years. The S 580e PHEV gets the federally mandated 10 yr / 100k mi high-voltage battery coverage.

Complimentary maintenance & perks55

S-Class buyers get the standard Mercedes program — first Service A (1 yr / 10k mi), 4-yr roadside assistance, and Mercedes me Connect trial (remote start, geofencing, in-car voice assistant) — plus flagship-only perks including a longer Mercedes me Connect trial (typically 3 yrs of Remote and Guidance services) and participating-dealer pickup/delivery concierge service. Still short of the multi-year included scheduled maintenance that Genesis, Volvo, and Jaguar bundle.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$96,600 (≈$86,800 depreciation + $9,800 maintenance)

#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$140,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (38% retained, or about $53,200) leaves about $86,800 in depreciation. Add the projected $9,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $96,600 in total.

6Reliability & QualityGrades above the middle of the scale.2.85B-
Predicted reliability68
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Consumer Reports has held the W223 S-Class at below-average predicted reliability since its 2021 launch, with issues centered on MBUX Hyperscreen software, 48V mild-hybrid integration, rear-axle steering electronics, and body/climate electronics. Owner survey signals have gradually improved but still trail the BMW 7 Series and are well behind the Lexus LS and Genesis G90. Similar profile to the E-Class (66) with a small bump reflecting Mercedes' concentrated engineering focus on the flagship.

Brand reliability track record65
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz consistently lands in the lower half of J.D. Power VDS and Consumer Reports brand rankings — not bottom-tier like Alfa Romeo or Land Rover, but well behind Lexus, Toyota, and Buick, and marginally behind BMW. Same brand baseline applied across the Mercedes sedan lineup (C/E-Class also 65).

Recall & TSB history62
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The W223 has been the subject of an unusually high number of NHTSA campaigns since 2021 — recalls covering rear brake booster software, communications module/eCall, rear-window airbag, headliner detachment on early cars, seatbelt tensioner, rear-axle steering software, and multiple MBUX/OTA updates. Nothing systemic to powertrain or fire, but the sheer count sits materially worse than the BMW 7 Series (76) and the E-Class (70).

Powertrain durability reputation82
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

S 500 4MATIC uses the well-regarded M256 3.0L inline-six turbo with 48V ISG (in continuous production since 2018 with a strong high-mileage record); S 580 4MATIC's M177 4.0L twin-turbo V8 is a mature, durable design. The 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic is proven. The S 580e PHEV adds electric-motor and Li-ion pack complexity but uses the same M256 core. Slight edge over the E-Class (74) reflects a more V8/I6-weighted mix vs. the E-Class's newer M254 I4 platform.

Interior material quality96
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Class-benchmark cabin: Nappa leather standard, active ambient lighting with 250+ LEDs, 12.8-inch OLED center screen and optional MBUX Hyperscreen, open-pore wood, brushed aluminum, and Burmester 4D audio trim. Reviewers routinely rank the S-Class interior at the top of the full-size luxury class alongside the BMW 7 Series (94) and above the Audi A8 (93); only the Cadillac Celestiq, Maybach S-Class, and Rolls-Royce Ghost sit clearly above.

Fit & finish89
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Assembly at Mercedes' Sindelfingen plant delivers tight panel gaps, low rattle rates, and premium door-close and switchgear feel — a long-standing S-Class strength. The knock on the W223's initial-quality signal is software rather than physical assembly: MBUX Hyperscreen freeze/reboot reports and 48V electrical quirks show up in J.D. Power IQS as infotainment complaints, holding this a touch below Audi A8 (92).

Dealer & service network80
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

~380 Mercedes-Benz dealers across all 50 US states — denser than BMW (~350) and Audi (~300), covers all major metros and most secondary markets. Flagship S-Class buyers typically get concierge-level treatment at most dealers. Luxury service satisfaction sits mid-pack among luxury brands in J.D. Power CSI. Same brand baseline used across the Mercedes sedan lineup.

Parts availability & repair cost42
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The S-Class is among the most expensive vehicles on the US market to maintain out of warranty. MBUX Hyperscreen assemblies, rear-axle-steering modules, AIRMATIC air suspension components, active ride control, PHEV battery service (S 580e), and 48V ISG electronics are almost entirely dealer-only and command flagship pricing. Aftermarket is thin outside a handful of specialist independents. Rates below the E-Class (48) reflecting the S-Class's more elaborate air suspension, rear-axle steering, and Hyperscreen content.

Kid & car-seat practicality76
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Class-leading 43.8 in rear legroom on the long-wheelbase-only US spec (cat4.1.5 = 100) leaves an enormous rear-facing car-seat well, with wide-opening rear doors and LATCH on both outboard positions (cat3.3.3 = 78). Held back by a modest 12.8 cu ft trunk (cat4.2.1 = 28) that swallows a stroller but not much beyond, LATCH anchors recessed behind seat trim covers, and the optional Executive Rear Seat Package that replaces the bench with two heavily contoured reclining thrones that fight rear-facing seat installs.

Family safety package85
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Unlike the C-Class and E-Class where the L2 suite is package-gated, every 2026 S-Class ships the full ADAS bundle standard — DISTRONIC adaptive cruise, Active Steering Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Active Blind Spot with braking, Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic/turning, PRE-SAFE Impulse Side, center airbag and rear-seat frontal airbags (cat3.2.1 = 92). Neither NHTSA nor IIHS has completed a full test slate on the W223 (cat3.1.2 = 70), so the family-safety story rests on Mercedes' consistently Good AEB across the C-/E-Class using the same sensor stack, plus the standard hardware being unusually complete.

Family road-trip comfort92

Segment benchmark for rear-passenger comfort: 43.8 in rear legroom, 39.4 in rear headroom, standard 4-zone climate, heated steering wheel and Energizing Comfort massage, optional Executive Rear Seat Package with reclining rear thrones, calf rests, heated armrests, warmed seat belts and rear massage, plus available rear-seat entertainment screens and panoramic roof (cat4.3.1 = 95, cat4.3.4 = 92). Held back only by a 12.8 cu ft trunk (cat4.2.1 = 28) that struggles to swallow a family's full luggage load — versus 19.2 cu ft in the BMW 7 Series.

Daily driving ease88
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

48V mild-hybrid inline-six is silky in stop-and-go, AIRMATIC air suspension is standard (cat4.3.2 = 95), the cabin is 'whisper quiet' at any speed (cat4.3.3 = 92), Active Steering Assist with route-based curve prediction and DISTRONIC ACC are standard (cat3.2.4 = 90, cat3.2.5 = 92), and Drive Pilot is the only SAE Level 3 conditional-automation system on sale in the US — eyes-off legal in congested traffic up to ~40 mph on approved California and Nevada highways. Held back by the imposing footprint (208.2 in long) and the fact that BMW's Highway Assistant covers hands-off up to 85 mph, a wider operational domain than Drive Pilot's traffic-jam envelope.

Commuting cost efficiency55
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volume S 500 4MATIC returns 20/29/23 MPG on required 91-octane premium (cat2.1.1) at ~$2,850/yr fuel spend (cat2.3.1) — meaningfully worse than the BMW 740i xDrive at 27 MPG combined. The available S 580e PHEV cuts commuting spend hard with 61 MPGe combined and 47 mi EPA electric range for chargeable owners, but tires, insurance and Mercedes-tier maintenance keep total per-mile costs at the top of the segment.

Parking & maneuverability73
#3 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

208.2 in long and 76.9 in wide is genuinely full-size, but rear-axle steering (up to 4.5° optional on S 500, 10° standard on S 580e and above) cuts the turning circle to about 35 ft — actually tighter than most mid-size sedans — and standard Surround View 360 and Active Parking Assist make tight garages workable. Thick D-pillars and the long hood still hurt natural sightlines (cat3.3.2 = 80).

Work capability13
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No US tow rating, no bed, and a 12.8 cu ft trunk that ranks near the bottom of the full-size luxury segment. Rear seatback is fixed with only a ski pass-through — long objects like ladders, lumber or bike frames won't fit. A luxury sedan flagship, not a work tool.

Durability for work duty20
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Nappa leather, open-pore wood, brushed aluminum, dual OLED touchscreens, 64-color ambient lighting, standard air suspension, and dense driver-assist electronics are the antithesis of trade abuse. Out-of-warranty repair costs are among the segment's highest — RepairPal and Consumer Reports data flag Mercedes flagships at $1,200+/yr average — and there is no fleet-vehicle deployment to prove the platform under hard use.

Jobsite & upfit practicality13
#6 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No cargo bed, no factory roof rails, no factory hitch, no 120V AC outlet in the trunk, and no upfit ecosystem. Trunk offers a 12V outlet and a handful of tie-down hooks — baseline luxury sedan provisions and nothing more. Interior surfaces are leather, wood and chrome, not the washable/durable finishes work vehicles use.

Long-distance comfort & range89
#5 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A core S-Class mission: AIRMATIC air suspension is standard (cat4.3.2 = 95), the cabin is class-benchmark quiet (cat4.3.3 = 92), multicontour front seats add ventilation, heating and Energizing massage (cat4.3.1 = 95), DISTRONIC with route-based speed adaptation and Active Steering Assist reduce highway fatigue meaningfully (cat3.2.5 = 92), and Multibeam LED (standard) plus optional Digital Light cut night-driving fatigue (cat3.3.1 = 95). Held back by ~460 mi combined range on the 20-gal tank at 23 MPG — meaningfully shorter than the BMW 740i xDrive's ~620 mi highway range on 32 MPG hwy.

Outdoor & adventure capability46
#2 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

4MATIC AWD is standard across US trims and AIRMATIC's raise function briefly lifts the car for gravel or unplowed driveways. Held back by ~5.3 in ground clearance (default), no US tow rating, no factory roof-rail or hitch accessory in the MBUSA catalog, and a long-wheelbase footprint that hurts approach/departure and breakover angles. Genuinely pavement-oriented despite the standard AWD.

Gear & luggage flexibility40
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

12.8 cu ft trunk is small for a full-size luxury flagship — ~1% larger than the Audi A8 (12.5 cu ft) but 33% below the BMW 7 Series (19.2 cu ft). Rear seatback is fixed with only a ski pass-through — no 40/20/40 fold, no fold-flat option. No frunk, no factory roof rails, no factory hitch, no underfloor storage tray. One of the S-Class's genuine ownership weaknesses versus the 7 Series and against SUV cross-shops.

Standard AIRMATIC air suspension and rear-axle steering give the ~4,700-lb flagship notably composed body control and better-than-expected agility for its footprint, but chassis tuning is calibrated for isolation over engagement — cornering is secure and flat rather than eager. Sits just below the more dynamic BMW 7 Series (75.5).

Steering feel63
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Steering is accurate and confidence-inspiring on-center but electrically assisted, light in effort, and largely devoid of road-surface feedback — a deliberate luxury calibration. Rear-axle steering aids tightness at low speed but does not add feel.

Braking confidence78
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Large disc brakes with strong initial bite, a firm and progressive pedal, and reliably short stops for a heavy full-size sedan (typical instrumented 70–0 mph in the 165–175 ft range). Pedal feel is tuned for smooth luxury deceleration but retains authority under repeated hard use.

Powertrain smoothness & response88
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The S 500's 3.0L turbo inline-6 with 48V integrated starter-generator and 9G-Tronic automatic is one of the smoothest luxury drivetrains sold — the ISG masks stop/start restarts, fills low-rpm torque, and produces essentially seamless tip-in. S 580 V8 and S 580e PHEV are similarly polished.

Drivetrain noise & vibration90
#4 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Cabin isolation is a class benchmark — acoustic laminated glass, active engine mounts, and thorough sound deadening keep the inline-6 and V8 nearly inaudible at cruise and only distantly present under full throttle. Almost no vibration reaches the wheel or pedals.

US-market S-Class comes standard with rear-axle steering (~4.5°), pulling the curb-to-curb turning diameter down to about 36.4 ft despite a ~126.6-inch wheelbase — impressive for a full-size flagship but still longer than compact luxury sedans.

Driving position & ergonomics82

Extensive power seat and steering column adjustment, memory profiles, and outstanding forward sightlines suit a broad range of driver sizes. Loses points to the best only because the portrait 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen concentrates most controls (climate, seat, drive mode) behind menus and reaches, requiring eyes-off-road glances.

Fun-to-drive factor62
#7 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Effortlessly quick and endlessly composed but not engaging — the S-Class is engineered as a chauffeur-grade limousine, not an enthusiast tool. The V8 S 580 adds character, but even it is filtered through layers of isolation; base S 500 is dignified rather than exciting. AMG variants (not this trim) would score materially higher.

S 500 4MATIC opens with a heavy slate of luxury kit — Nappa leather, 12.8-inch MBUX central OLED, 12.3-inch driver display, AIRMATIC air suspension, 4MATIC AWD, panoramic roof, four-zone climate, LED headlights, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, Burmester audio, heated and ventilated front seats, and the full DISTRONIC/Active Steering/Blind Spot ADAS stack. But rear-cabin luxury (Executive Rear Package, Warmth & Comfort, chauffeur package), Digital Light headlamps, 4D Burmester audio, and rear-axle steering upgrades remain expensive option packages, so the S-Class is competitive with the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8 on standard kit but is meaningfully outgunned by Genesis G90's loaded-base approach and by Lexus LS at similar money.

Feature value per dollar65
#8 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

S 500 4MATIC starts around $122K, S 580 4MATIC around $135K, and Maybach variants push past $210K — the S-Class delivers a flagship luxury experience matched only by Rolls-Royce and Bentley, but Genesis G90 offers roughly 90% of the material and tech experience for $100K, and Lexus LS undercuts on price while matching refinement. As a pure content-per-dollar proposition, the S-Class lags value-driven flagship rivals even though it beats the BMW 7 Series on execution.

Trim & configuration breadth92

Exceptional spread: S 500 4MATIC (I6 mild hybrid), S 580 4MATIC (V8 mild hybrid), S 580e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid, AMG S 63 E Performance PHEV V8, plus Mercedes-Maybach S 580 and Maybach S 680 V12 variants — covering efficiency-minded PHEVs, twin-turbo V8 luxury, AMG performance, and ultra-luxury chauffeur configurations. Few sedans at any price offer this range of powertrains and configurations.

Sales popularity & market acceptance82
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The S-Class is the best-selling traditional full-size luxury sedan in the US at roughly 12-14K units per year, comfortably outselling the BMW 7 Series and dwarfing Audi A8, Genesis G90, and Lexus LS volumes — a strong showing in a segment that continues to contract as buyers shift to full-size luxury SUVs.

Brand desirability & image96
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The S-Class is the reference luxury sedan globally — the term 'S-Class' itself is shorthand for the pinnacle of the segment, and the three-pointed-star flagship carries unmatched executive and diplomatic prestige. Only Rolls-Royce and Bentley outrank it on pure image, and the Maybach sub-brand covers that territory as well.

Deals & incentive availability65
#9 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz Financial Services runs periodic lease specials and residual-boosted programs on S 500 and S 580, and normal-market cars can be negotiated modestly off MSRP, but true cash-on-hood is limited on the standard S-Class and Maybach variants routinely transact at or above MSRP. Buyers benefit less here than on the mid-size E-Class where fleet inventory drives sharper deals.

The current W223 generation launched globally for MY2021, making MY2026 its sixth year in market — the mid-cycle facelift (MOPF) is imminent or just arriving for MY2026-2027, meaning buyers today either see the pre-facelift car nearing replacement or the freshly-refreshed platform with no long-term redesign risk. Tech remains current (MBUX Hyperscreen, EQ Boost mild hybrids, S 580e PHEV) but the platform itself is no longer new.

Critical reception & awards90
#1 of 10 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The W223 S-Class is widely regarded as the world's best luxury sedan — Car and Driver, MotorTrend, Edmunds, and Consumer Reports have consistently named it the class benchmark for ride quality, cabin refinement, and technology, and it has taken Wards 10 Best Interiors honors and won virtually every full-size luxury sedan comparison test since launch, with only Genesis G90 and Lexus LS occasionally taking value-weighted victories.
