The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size suv, strong on reliability and held back by efficiency.

The 2024 Passport is a roomy, honest two-row SUV with a smooth 280-hp V6, standard torque-vectoring AWD, 5,000 lbs of towing and Honda's dependable ownership record. It is also an aging design in its sixth model year: the 8-inch screen, wired-only CarPlay and older driver aids feel a generation behind, and 21 MPG combined costs about $3,200 a year in fuel. Buy one if you want a durable, spacious five-seater with real light-trail ability. If you care about tech, fuel bills or warranty length, look at newer rivals, or at the redesigned 2026 Passport.

#6 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers like the strong, linear output and smooth character of the naturally aspirated V6, a contrast to the turbo-4s in many rivals. It is somewhat thirsty and can sound coarse near redline, and idle stop-start transitions are noticeable.

Transmission behavior66
#14 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

MotorWeek found 2024 shifts smooth with minimal interruption. Honda's ZF-derived 9-speed is still widely criticized for slow kickdowns, occasional hunting and the clunky push-button shifter, which keeps it in the mid band.

Max towing capacity
5,000 lbs (properly equipped)
57/100
#6 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Manufacturer rating of 5,000 lbs with standard AWD when properly equipped. That is typical of the stronger two-row mid-size SUVs.

AWD/4WD availability88
#1 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

i-VTM4 torque-vectoring AWD is standard on every 2024 trim (FWD was dropped). It includes Intelligent Traction Management modes (Normal/Snow/Mud/Sand) and rear-axle torque vectoring, though there is no low range.

Off-road capability62
#5 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

8.1-in ground clearance and Honda's terrain modes make it more capable than most car-based crossovers. The 2024 TrailSport adds revised suspension tuning, retuned stabilizer bars and 245/60R18 all-terrain tires. There are no skid plates beyond light trim pieces, no lockers and no low range, so it remains a light-duty soft-roader.

Powertrain lineup breadth30
#13 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

There is a single powertrain across the 2024 lineup: 3.5L V6, 9-speed automatic and standard AWD. No turbo, hybrid, PHEV or EV variant is offered.

100/100
#1 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2024 Passport (2019–2025 generation, carry-over year) holds NHTSA's 5-star overall rating, with 4-star frontal and rollover sub-ratings.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness48
#23 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

No IIHS award for 2024. Good in driver small overlap and original moderate overlap, but only Acceptable passenger small overlap and Marginal in the updated side test — the aging first-generation-of-this-platform structure falls short of current criteria.

Standard ADAS suite breadth82
#14 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Honda Sensing (CMBS AEB, ACC, LKAS, road departure mitigation, auto high beams) plus Blind Spot Information with Cross Traffic Monitor are standard on every 2024 Passport trim (EX-L, TrailSport, Black Edition).

Automatic emergency braking performance58
#23 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Standard CMBS earned IIHS Superior in the original daytime vehicle-to-vehicle test earlier in this generation, but the 2024 model has no updated front crash prevention or nighttime pedestrian rating, and the older camera/radar setup trails Honda Sensing 360 rivals.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage70
#18 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Blind Spot Information and Cross Traffic Monitor are standard on all trims but alert-only, with no active steering or braking intervention and no trailer-aware coverage.

Lane keeping & centering55
#21 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Older-generation LKAS works only above ~45 mph and reviewers describe it as prone to wandering and abrupt corrections compared with newer Honda Sensing 360 systems.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist55
#23 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Standard ACC lacks Low-Speed Follow on the Passport, so it disengages in stop-and-go traffic — a notable gap versus full-speed-range systems in rivals and in Honda's own newer models.

Hands-free driving availability10
#12 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving system is offered on any 2024 Passport trim.

Headlight performance60
#19 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

LED headlights with auto high beams are standard on all trims, but IIHS lists no headlight rating for 2024 and earlier years of this generation drew mixed (Acceptable) results.

Outward visibility70
#13 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Upright two-row SUV with a tall seating position and reasonable sightlines, though rear pillars are thick; only a multi-angle rearview camera is offered — no 360-degree camera on any trim.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability66
#20 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Roomy rear seat and wide door openings make fitting multiple seats easy, but IIHS rates LATCH ease of use only Acceptable.

Generous second-row headroom, which comes from the Pilot-derived body.

Rear legroom
39.6 in
80/100
#12 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Second-row legroom is among the most generous of the two-row mid-size SUVs, a key Passport strength.

Third-row usability10
#23 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The Passport has no third row. It is the two-row, shorter sibling of the three-row Pilot.

Cargo/trunk volume
41.2 cu ft behind 2nd row (50.5 cu ft incl. underfloor well)
29/100
#16 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Honda publishes a range of 41.2–50.5 cu ft. The 41.2 figure is the moonroof-equipped body, which is every 2024 trim; the larger number counts the underfloor storage well. It is still large for a two-row SUV.

Max cargo volume
77.7 cu ft (up to 100.8 cu ft incl. underfloor, per Honda's range)
50/100
#15 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Honda's range for volume behind the first row is 77.7–100.8 cu ft. 77.7 cu ft is the figure for the moonroof body that every 2024 trim uses.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions72
#6 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

There is a large reconfigurable center console with a sliding tray, big door bins and a deep lockable underfloor cargo well behind the second row. These are practical touches, but there is no onboard AC outlet on volume trims.

Seat comfort70
#15 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Leather seats are standard, and reviewers find them comfortable and supportive, with a roomy, reclining rear bench. Front-seat adjustability is ordinary and lumbar support is basic.

Ride quality66
#18 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The ride is composed and absorbent on 20-in wheels, though it is firmer than the Pilot's. The TrailSport's revised suspension and 18-in all-terrain tires add some float and impact noise.

Cabin quietness58
#21 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Road and wind noise are average for the class. TrailSport all-terrain tires add some tire roar, and the V6 is vocal under hard acceleration.

Climate & comfort features60
#23 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Heated front seats, tri-zone automatic climate and remote engine start are standard. Ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats and a heated steering wheel are reserved for the top Black Edition.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Passport's weakest categories.1.54D
Base MSRP
$43,275 (EX-L AWD, incl. $1,375 destination)
54/100
#18 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

For 2024 the Passport lineup starts at the EX-L. The FWD Sport trim is gone and AWD is standard, so the entry price is high for a two-row mid-size SUV.

Volume-Trim Price
$45,875 (TrailSport, incl. destination; range $43,275–$49,345)
54/100
#15 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Honda centred the 2024 marketing on the reworked TrailSport, which gained an off-road-tuned suspension and all-terrain tires. It is taken as the volume trim, which is consistent with TrailSport taking 76% of Passport sales after the redesign. Honda did not publish a trim mix for 2024.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$5,500 over 5 years (maintenance + repairs; CarEdge ~$2,519 low-end)
62/100
#13 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The Passport shares the 3.5L J35 V6 and 9-speed automatic with the 2024 Pilot, whose KBB projection is about $5,560. CarEdge's lower $2,519 estimate excludes warranty work and leans toward scheduled service only, so the value is weighted toward the KBB-style figure.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~55% of MSRP retained at 5 years
50/100
#3 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

This is a solid projection for a mid-size SUV. Retention may be softened slightly because the 2024 is the final year of a generation that was replaced by the 2026 redesign.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
0/100
#9 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

This is the industry-baseline bumper-to-bumper term, behind Hyundai/Kia's 5 yr / 60k mi.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain
0/100
#9 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

This is the industry-floor powertrain term, half the length of the Korean rivals' 10 yr / 100k mi.

Complimentary maintenance & perks62
#8 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Honda Service Pass covers oil and filter changes, tire rotations and multi-point inspections for 2 yr / 24,000 mi, and 24-hour roadside assistance runs for the 3-year basic warranty. That roughly matches ToyotaCare but falls short of multi-year luxury-style plans.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$26,144 (≈$20,644 depreciation + $5,500 maintenance)
62/100
#7 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

$45,875 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (55% retained, or about $25,231) leaves about $20,644 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $26,144 in total.

6Reliability & QualityThe Passport's best-graded category.3.09B
Predicted reliability66
#6 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2024 Passport is the final carry-over year of the second generation (2019–2025, refreshed 2022); Consumer Reports rates its reliability about average versus other 2024 vehicles, with owner-reported exhaust, transmission and brake issues keeping it out of the top tier.

Brand reliability track record76
#8 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Honda remains an upper-half brand in CR and J.D. Power dependability rankings but has slipped from its historic top-5 standing.

Recall & TSB history74
#3 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Only one NHTSA recall covers the 2024 Passport, though it is a fire-risk fuel-system defect; the 2024 Passport's J35Y6 V6 is not part of the J35Y8 crankshaft/connecting-rod actions that hit the 2023+ Pilot.

Powertrain durability reputation80
#1 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 3.5L J35 V6 is a proven high-mileage engine family; the ZF-derived 9-speed automatic carried by the second-gen Passport has a history of shift-quality complaints and software updates, and CR owners flag some major transmission repairs, tempering the score.

Interior material quality66
#15 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Sturdy, well-assembled cabin with soft-touch surfaces in key spots, but reviewers note the dated design and hard plastics lag newer rivals such as the Grand Cherokee and Palisade at similar prices.

Fit & finish78
#2 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Late-cycle production at Honda's Lincoln, Alabama plant on a mature platform yields consistent assembly with few build-quality complaints.

Dealer & service network86
#2 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Honda has roughly 1,000 US dealers with dense nationwide coverage and above-average mass-market service satisfaction.

Parts availability & repair cost86
#1 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Shares its V6, 9-speed and platform with the Pilot, Odyssey and Ridgeline, giving abundant OEM and aftermarket parts and below-average repair costs.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Passport's weakest categories.1.07D
Touchscreen size
8.0 in (all trims; no larger screen offered)
12/100
#22 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Every 2024 trim gets the same 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen, which is small against rivals' 10–12-inch screens.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness58
#21 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The aging Display Audio system has physical volume and tuning knobs, which helps. Its graphics are dated and the menus are layered, and reviewers increasingly flag it as behind the Pilot's newer system.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto55
#18 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard but wired-only on the 2024 Passport. Wireless projection arrived only with the 2026 redesign.

Voice control & native navigation52
#22 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation is fitted only on the TrailSport and Black Edition; the volume EX-L has none. Voice control is basic command-style, so most owners rely on phone projection.

Audio system quality63
#20 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The base 215-watt, 7-speaker system with subwoofer is decent. The Black Edition's 540-watt, 10-speaker premium system is a modest unbranded upgrade.

Digital instrument cluster40
#22 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

All trims use analog gauges with a small center TFT driver-information display; no full-digital cluster is offered.

OTA update capability25
#25 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

There is no meaningful over-the-air capability; Display Audio software and map updates are dealer- or USB-based.

Companion app & remote functions55
#22 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

HondaLink offers remote lock, locate and remote start through the subscription Remote package. The Black Edition adds a Wi-Fi hotspot. There is no digital key.

Charging ports & device power68
#16 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A Qi wireless charger is standard on all trims, plus front USB-A and USB-C and two 3.0A USB-C ports for the rear seat. There is no household AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access62
#24 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Smart Entry with push-button start and remote engine start are standard. The hands-free power tailgate is Black Edition only, and there is no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids52
#23 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A multi-angle rearview camera and blind spot information with cross-traffic monitor are standard. Front and rear parking sensors are on upper trims. No surround-view camera or automated parking is offered.

Head-up display availability10
#21 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

No head-up display is offered on any 2024 Passport trim.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.19C
Kid & car-seat practicality70
#17 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

There are wide rear doors, 39.6 in of rear legroom for rear-facing seats, and a big cargo hold with an underfloor well for strollers. With only five seats, larger families outgrow it.

Family safety package72
#19 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Honda Sensing (AEB, adaptive cruise, lane-keep) and blind spot information are standard on every trim. Crash results are solid but no longer top-tier under IIHS's tougher updated tests.

Family road-trip comfort66
#19 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

There is a roomy rear seat with rear vents, rear USB-C ports and plenty of luggage room with all seats occupied. Rear heated seats are top-trim only and there is no rear entertainment.

Daily driving ease66
#18 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

It is easy to drive, with good outward visibility and strong low-end response. The 9-speed's hesitant kickdowns and the push-button shifter are minor daily annoyances, and there is no traffic-jam assist.

Commuting cost efficiency42
#20 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

With a 19/24/21 MPG EPA rating, the AWD V6 is thirsty against turbo-4 and hybrid two-row rivals that run in the mid-20s or better. It does run on regular fuel.

Parking & maneuverability62
#7 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

At 189 in long it is shorter than three-row rivals and turns in 39.3 ft. It is a wide body, though, and there is no surround camera, so tight garages take care.

Work capability56
#10 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A 5,000-lb tow rating with standard AWD and a large flat load floor handle light-to-moderate duty such as small boats and utility trailers. As a unibody crossover it is not a work tool.

Durability for work duty62
#4 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The proven J35 V6 and 9-speed powertrain is shared with the Pilot, Ridgeline and Odyssey. The leather interior and unibody construction make it consumer-oriented rather than fleet-hardened.

Jobsite & upfit practicality40
#18 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Cargo tie-down hooks, the washable underfloor well and the TrailSport's roof rails help, but there is no onboard AC power and little upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range64
#22 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

It is a comfortable highway cruiser with standard adaptive cruise and lane-keep. Road noise is average and a 19.5-gal tank at 24 MPG highway gives roughly 450 miles of range.

Outdoor & adventure capability70
#6 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Standard torque-vectoring AWD with Snow/Mud/Sand modes, 8.1 in of ground clearance and the 2024 TrailSport's all-terrain tires and retuned suspension make it more adventure-capable than most crossovers. There are no low range and no lockers.

Gear & luggage flexibility72
#12 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The large cargo bay has a deep underfloor well and 60/40 fold-flat rear seats. Roof rails come on the TrailSport and Black Edition, and the 5,000-lb hitch rating covers bike/cargo carriers and small campers.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the Passport's strongest categories.2.28C
Handling & agility68
#3 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A shorter wheelbase than the Pilot and torque-vectoring AWD make it feel tidier than most mid-size SUVs. The 2024 TrailSport's all-terrain tires cost some grip and add slight float.

Steering feel60
#9 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The steering is accurately weighted and predictable but offers little feedback, which is typical for the class.

Braking confidence64
#16 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The brakes stop competently with a progressive pedal. Instrumented 70–0 mph stops of roughly 175–180 ft are class-average.

Powertrain smoothness & response68
#10 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The naturally aspirated V6 delivers smooth, linear power. The 9-speed can be slow to kick down and the idle stop-start restart is perceptible.

Drivetrain noise & vibration70
#8 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The V6 has a pleasant, refined note and is smoother than the turbo-4s in many rivals. It gets vocal near redline but is never coarse.

Turning circle
39.3 ft curb-to-curb
34/100
#16 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

This turning diameter is middling-to-wide for a two-row SUV.

Driving position & ergonomics68
#17 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The commanding seating position and good sightlines make for easy ingress. Physical climate controls and audio knobs remain, but the push-button gear selector draws complaints.

Fun-to-drive factor64
#4 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The punchy V6 and torque-vectoring AWD give it more character than most mid-size crossovers, but it is still a family SUV first.

10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.95C-
Standard equipment generosity70
#16 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

For 2024 the cheaper Sport trim was dropped, so even the base EX-L comes with leather, a power moonroof, a power tailgate, blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, 20-inch wheels, i-VTM4 AWD and Honda Sensing. That is well-equipped at entry. The trade-off is a $43K starting price that rivals undercut with sparser base trims.

Feature value per dollar63
#16 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A 280-hp V6, torque-vectoring AWD, 5,000-lb towing and real all-terrain hardware on the TrailSport give it solid capability per dollar. Against that, the cabin tech is dated (small 8-inch screen, 9-speed) and the price rose with the loss of the Sport trim. The result is fair value, not a bargain.

Trim & configuration breadth45
#24 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

There are only three trims (EX-L, TrailSport, Black Edition), all with the same V6/9AT/AWD powertrain and no FWD or hybrid option, across a narrow ~$6K price spread. It is close to a take-it-or-leave-it lineup.

Sales popularity & market acceptance38
#24 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

US sales were 32,527 units in 2024, down 20.3% from 2023, as the aging generation wound down ahead of the redesign. That is far below the mid-size SUV leaders.

Brand desirability & image76
#3 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Honda's reputation for reliability and resale lifts the Passport, and the TrailSport gives it some rugged character. Still, as a nameplate the Passport has little of the cult following of the 4Runner or Bronco.

Deals & incentive availability60
#20 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

As a slow-selling final-generation model in 2024, the Passport typically drew modest Honda Financial Services APR and lease offers and dealer discounts. They were not deep, but buyers could usually find a deal.

Model freshness32
#22 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

This is the sixth model year of the generation that launched for 2019. It was facelifted for 2022, and the 2024 changes were limited to TrailSport hardware and a new Black Edition. A complete redesign arrives for 2026, so the platform and tech are aging and replacement is imminent.

Critical reception & awards64
#13 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Reviews are well-regarded overall, praising the strong V6, the roomy cabin and the ride. Infotainment and driver-assist refinement draw criticism, and the Passport is rarely the comparison-test pick or a major award winner.
