The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size sedan, strong on ownership and held back by performance.
The 2021 K5 was the first year of the Optima's replacement. It is a stylish, well-priced mid-size sedan: the volume GT-Line cost $26,485 new, it earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a 5-star NHTSA rating, and it came with roomy front seats and wireless CarPlay as standard. The trade-offs are a modest 180-hp base engine, average 31 MPG combined with no hybrid option, a dated small-screen tech setup and a snug back seat. As the first year of a new generation, it also has a busier recall history than you'd like.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe K5's lowest-graded category.0.60F
2021 was the K5's launch year (first year of the Optima's replacement); volume trims use the 1.6L turbo four at 180 hp, and only the GT gets the 290-hp 2.5T.
The 1.6T makes 195 lb-ft, typical of the segment's base turbo engines.
Instrumented tests of the 180-hp front-drive K5 run 7.0–8.0 s to 60 mph, about average for a mid-size sedan; the GT is far quicker.
The 1.6T pulls well in the midrange and is quiet at cruise, but reviewers note some low-rpm turbo lag and a buzzy note when worked hard; the GT's 2.5T is stronger but coarser.
The 1.6T's conventional 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly and decisively; the GT's 8-speed wet dual-clutch can be hesitant at low speed.
AWD is offered with the 1.6T on LXS and GT-Line AWD trims, unusual in the segment, but it is a basic on-demand system and the GT is FWD only.
Two gas turbo fours (1.6T and 2.5T) with FWD/AWD; no hybrid in the US, unlike Camry/Accord/Sonata rivals.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.80C-
EPA rates the volume 1.6T FWD trims (LXS/GT-Line) at 31 mpg combined; only the base LX with idle stop-start reaches 32.
EPA city figure for the volume 1.6T FWD trims.
EPA highway figure for the volume 1.6T FWD trims.
Computed from the 15.8-gallon tank and the EPA 31 mpg combined rating.
EPA's annual fuel cost estimate at 15k mi/yr on regular gas.
Both the 1.6T and the GT's 2.5T run on regular unleaded.
3SafetyOne of the K5's strongest categories.2.81B-
The 2021 K5 was the launch year of the DL3 generation that replaced the Optima, and NHTSA rated it 5 stars overall. The frontal crash leg was 4 stars because the front passenger scored 4 stars.
IIHS named the 2021 K5 a Top Safety Pick+ with Good results in every crashworthiness test then in force. The award applies only to cars built after November 2020, and the later updated side test (run on a 2023 car) came back Marginal.
Every trim has standard AEB with pedestrian detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, Driver Attention Warning and High Beam Assist. From the LXS volume trim up, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance and Safe Exit Assist are also standard, but the base LX lacks them, and adaptive cruise is not standard on any trim.
IIHS rates both the standard and optional systems Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle crashes. For daytime pedestrians the standard system rates Advanced and the optional one Superior. No nighttime pedestrian result is published for this year.
Active blind-spot and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, which can brake rather than only warn, plus Safe Exit Assist are standard from the LXS volume trim up. They are not available at all on the base LX.
Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Following Assist centering are standard on every 2021 trim, which is generous for the class. Reviewers find Kia's system competent on clearly marked highways but less sure when lane lines fade.
Stop & Go Smart Cruise Control and Highway Driving Assist are both package options on upper trims only. The LX and LXS volume trims make do with conventional cruise control.
No 2021 K5 offers hands-free driving. The most capable option, Highway Driving Assist, requires hands on the wheel.
On cars built after November 2020, the LED reflector lamps on the volume trims rate Acceptable and only the optional projectors rate Good. Earlier builds rated Marginal (reflector) or Poor (projector). High Beam Assist is standard on every trim.
The low fastback roofline, high beltline and thick rear pillars restrict the view rearward and over the shoulder. Standard active blind-spot assistance from the LXS up helps, but camera aids beyond the rearview camera are limited on volume trims.
IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Acceptable. The roomy rear seat and wide doors help, but the sloping roofline makes loading a car seat more awkward.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.67C+
Every 2021 K5 trim seats five, two in front and three on the rear bench, which is the norm for a mid-size sedan.
The volume GT-Line without the optional sunroof has generous front headroom. The panoramic roof costs nearly 2 inches.
Front legroom is class-leading for a mid-size sedan.
Rear headroom is respectable despite the fastback-style roofline.
Rear legroom trails the roomiest rivals such as the Accord. It is adequate for adults but snug for the class.
The trunk is mid-pack for the segment, a little larger than a Camry's and smaller than an Accord's.
Storage is competitive for daily use: a console bin, door pockets and a front tray. The volume GT-Line gets the wireless charging pad only with the Premium Package, and the trunk opening is narrow-ish. Nothing stands out as clever.
The front seats are well bolstered and supportive. The rear cushion sits low and the sloping roof limits taller passengers.
The ride is composed and mostly compliant. The GT-Line's 18-inch wheels add firmness over sharp impacts compared with the softer Camry and Accord.
Wind noise is well controlled, but road roar on coarse surfaces is noticeable at highway speeds. Noise levels are about average for the class.
Dual-zone automatic climate and remote start (LXS and up) are useful. On the volume GT-Line, heated seats and a heated wheel are optional. Ventilated seats and rear vents are EX/GT only.
5Cost of OwnershipThe K5's best-graded category.3.62A-
2021 was the K5's launch year, and unlike later years the lineup still opened at an LX with the 180-hp 1.6L turbo and 8-speed automatic. At $24,585 delivered it was one of the cheapest ways into a 2021 mid-size sedan.
The GT-Line FWD was the K5's volume trim, giving buyers the sporty styling for a small step over the LXS, at $26,485 delivered. Even the 290-hp GT stayed under $32,000, so the whole ladder sits at the cheap end of the segment band.
Scheduled maintenance on the 1.6T/8AT is inexpensive. With unscheduled repairs and the extra care a turbo GDI engine needs added in, the five-year total comes out slightly below the mid-size norm. Kia includes no complimentary maintenance to offset it.
A 2021 K5 is now about five years old, so its retention is largely observed rather than projected. Buying during the 2021–22 used-car price spike propped up its values, which leaves it ahead of older Kia sedans but still behind a Camry or Accord because of heavy fleet volume.
Kia's 5-year/60,000-mile basic coverage tops the segment band. It is two years longer than the 3/36 coverage from Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda, and it applies to every 2021 K5 trim.
The 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain term is best in class and covers both the 1.6T and the GT's 2.5T. It applies to the original owner only.
Kia includes no complimentary scheduled maintenance in the US, unlike Hyundai on the twin Sonata or ToyotaCare on the Camry. What the K5 does get is 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance plus a UVO link connected-services trial on equipped trims, which puts it in the 'basic roadside only' band.
$26,485 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (55% retained, or about $14,567) leaves about $11,918 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,400 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $16,318 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.42C+
Consumer Reports gives the 2021 K5 an average-to-below reliability verdict (3/5) with weak marks for power equipment and in-car electronics, which is typical of a first model year of a new generation. That puts it in the lower part of the mixed-signal band, slightly under the later DL3 years.
Around 2021 Kia led or sat near the top of mass-market brands in J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study and ran close to industry average in three-year dependability, with Consumer Reports placing it mid-pack. Solid mid-band, held back by the Theta II engine legacy that was still in litigation and recall at the time.
The 2021 K5 is covered by around six NHTSA campaigns, including safety-system and fire-risk items: incorrectly installed side curtain airbags and a fuel-tank check-valve defect that can let the tank expand into hot exhaust parts. The DCT oil-pump power-loss recall affects only the 2.5T GT, but the overall tally is busier than the segment norm.
The volume LXS/GT-Line trims use the then-new 1.6L Smartstream turbo four with CVVD and a conventional 8-speed automatic — no systemic failure pattern, but in 2021 it was a brand-new engine family with no high-mileage record and more turbo/direct-injection complexity. The GT's 2.5T with wet DCT carries the oil-pump recall but is not the volume configuration.
The launch-year DL3 cabin is stylish and driver-focused with padded upper surfaces on mid trims, competitive for the mainstream mid-size class, though reviewers note hard plastics low in the cabin and on base trims.
Kia's initial-quality standing was strong and the K5 is built at West Point, Georgia, but launch-year owner reports cluster on electrical gremlins, HVAC faults and power-equipment issues rather than panel or rattle complaints, and the airbag-installation recall points to an assembly lapse.
Kia's roughly 775–800 US dealers give adequate metro/suburban coverage but a thinner rural footprint than Toyota or Honda, with mainstream-average service satisfaction. The 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty lowers the cost of using the network.
The K5 shares most mechanical hardware with the Hyundai Sonata and the Smartstream family, so parts are inexpensive and well stocked, and many 2021 cars remain within the 10-year powertrain warranty for original owners. The turbocharged 1.6L adds somewhat costlier out-of-warranty components.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the K5's weakest categories.1.60D
The volume GT-Line uses the 8-inch touchscreen. In 2021 the 10.25-inch navigation unit came only in the EX Premium and GT1 packages, and the dual 12.3-inch screens arrived with the MY2025 facelift.
Kia's interface is quick and logical, with physical volume and tuning knobs. The 8-inch screen is small by later standards, and the touch-sensitive shortcut bar draws some complaints.
The volume trims' 8-inch unit has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, which was rare in the class in 2021. The upgrade 10.25-inch navigation screen loses it and goes back to wired.
The volume GT-Line has no native navigation. Built-in nav only comes with the 10.25-inch screen in the EX Premium and GT1 packages, so voice control relies mostly on phone projection.
A 12-speaker Bose system is offered only in the EX Premium and GT1 packages. The volume GT-Line's standard 6-speaker system is merely adequate.
The volume trims use analog gauges with a 4.2-inch color display between them. A fully digital cluster is not part of the volume GT-Line's equipment.
There are no whole-vehicle over-the-air updates. Infotainment is updated by dealer or USB, and the volume 8-inch unit has no navigation maps to update.
UVO link telematics on LXS and up gives app-based remote start with climate, lock/unlock, vehicle finder and status. The base LX has none of it, and some services become paid after the trial.
USB ports serve both rows, mostly USB-A. The wireless charger is only in the GT-Line Premium Package on the volume trim, and there is no AC outlet.
From LXS up, every K5 has a smart key with push-button start, remote engine start and a hands-free Smart Trunk. The base LX lacks the smart key, and there is no phone-as-key.
A rear camera with dynamic guidelines and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance (LXS and up) are standard. No surround-view camera was offered in 2021; it arrived for 2022 on EX/GT.
No head-up display appears in any 2021 K5 trim or package.
8Use-Case FitOne of the K5's weakest categories.1.52D
The rear doors open wide, but the sloping roofline and 35.2-in rear legroom make rear-facing seats tight. LATCH is rated only Acceptable, and the 16 cu ft trunk takes a stroller.
The 2021 K5 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ (built after Nov 2020) with a 5-star NHTSA overall rating. Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic avoidance and Safe Exit Assist are standard from LXS up, but adaptive cruise is a package option on the volume trim.
Front-seat comfort is good, but rear amenities are thin on the GT-Line: no rear vents (EX/GT only) and snug rear legroom. The 16 cu ft trunk handles a family's luggage for a medium trip.
The 1.6T and 8-speed automatic are smooth and torquey in traffic, and standard lane-following assist keeps fatigue low. Rear visibility through the fastback roof is a mild annoyance.
A 31 MPG combined EPA rating on regular fuel makes it an average-cost commuter for a gas mid-size sedan. It cannot match hybrid Camry/Accord/Sonata running costs, and no K5 hybrid was sold in the US.
The 36-ft turning circle is reasonable for a 193-in sedan, and rear cross-traffic assist is standard from LXS up. No surround-view camera was offered in 2021, and the rear view is narrow.
This is a front-drive mid-size sedan with no US tow rating and a 16 cu ft trunk, so it is not a work vehicle.
The Smartstream 1.6T is backed by a 10-yr/100k-mile powertrain warranty, and the K5 is common in rental fleets. It is a commuter sedan, not built for abuse, and 2021 was the first year of the generation.
There are no work-oriented provisions: no outlets, tie-downs, rack ecosystem or hitch from the factory.
Supportive front seats, standard lane-following and 37 MPG highway over a 15.8-gal tank (about 490 miles combined) make it a capable tourer. Adaptive cruise is only in the GT-Line Premium Package, and road noise is average.
AWD is available on the LXS and GT-Line, which helps on gravel and in snow, but low ground clearance and no tow rating keep it pavement-oriented.
A 16 cu ft trunk with 60/40 split-folding rear seats fits normal luggage. Bulky gear is a squeeze through the sedan opening, and there are no roof rails.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.40C+
The K5 has tidy body control and good grip for a mainstream mid-size sedan, especially the GT-Line on 18-inch tires. It is secure and somewhat sporty but short of the Accord's poise.
The steering is precise and nicely weighted but numb, with little road feedback.
Stopping distances and pedal feel are adequate in normal driving, with no standout strength or weakness in reviews.
The 1.6T pulls strongly in the midrange and the 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly. Some turbo lag off the line holds it back.
The engine is quiet at cruise but sounds buzzy when worked hard, which is typical of small-displacement turbo fours.
The turning circle is a touch tighter than average for a mid-size sedan.
The low, sporty seating position and tilt/telescoping wheel work well, and physical audio knobs help. The touch-panel shortcut bar and limited rear sightline cost points.
The volume 1.6T is pleasant and peppy (0–60 in 7.0 s) but forgettable. The 290-hp GT is the enthusiast pick.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the K5's strongest categories.3.07B
Even the $24,585 LX came with the 180-hp turbo and 8-speed automatic, an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, LED headlights, alloy wheels and forward collision avoidance with lane keeping and lane following assist. That is generous for the price. Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alerts, the 10.25-inch navigation screen and ventilated seats needed the LXS/EX or option packages.
A $26,485 GT-Line with a turbo engine, plus a 290-hp GT for $31,585 delivered, made the launch-year K5 one of the strongest performance-per-dollar buys among 2021 mid-size sedans. AWD was available from $27,685 and the class-leading warranty was standard. 2021 prices were lower than in later model years, and there was no hybrid.
This was the widest lineup the K5 has had: seven configurations across five trims (LX, LXS FWD/AWD, GT-Line FWD/AWD, EX, GT), spanning about $24.6k–$31.6k delivered. AWD was offered on two trims and the 2.5T GT served as the performance halo. There was no hybrid in the US.
In its first full year the K5 grew sales well past the outgoing Optima, despite a shrinking mid-size sedan segment and 2021 chip shortages. It was still clearly behind the Camry, Accord and Altima, roughly level with the Sonata and ahead of the Mazda6 and Legacy.
2021 was the year Kia relaunched its logo and brand. The K5's fastback styling was a key part of moving the brand out of budget territory, but its resale and cross-shop pull in the segment still trailed Toyota and Honda.
This is scored for buyer benefit. Early in the 2021 model year, Kia supported the launch with low-APR and lease offers. From mid-2021 the semiconductor shortage dried up inventory across the industry, so discounts vanished and dealer markups became common for the rest of the model-year run.
2021 was the first model year of the all-new third-generation (DL3) K5, which replaced the Optima name in the US. It brought a new platform, new turbo engines and an 8-speed automatic, and the facelift was still four years away, so redesign risk for a 2021 buyer was minimal.
The launch-year K5 drew strong press for its styling, turbo engines, value and the 290-hp GT. It earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a 5-star NHTSA overall rating. In comparisons it still usually trailed the Accord and Camry, with reviewers citing a firm ride and the tight rear headroom under the fastback roof.
