The verdict
A struggling compact suv, strong on ownership and held back by performance.
The 2021 Sportage is the final year of the outgoing generation, and it shows: a 181-hp 2.4L four with a 9.3-second 0-60 and a 2,000-lb tow rating won't excite anyone, and cargo space (30.7 cu ft behind the rear seats) trails newer rivals. What it does deliver is real value — a $25,210 starting price, a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, a 5-star NHTSA rating, and Kia's strongest-ever dependability standing (#1 mass-market brand in J.D. Power's 2021 study). It's a sensible, low-drama compact SUV for a shopper prioritizing cost of ownership and safety over power, tech, or outright cargo room.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Class-leading warranty backs up low ownership costs
- Strong fundamental crash safety
- Kia's dependability reputation was peaking
What holds it back
- Underpowered and slow off the line
- Infotainment tech feels dated even for 2021
- Cargo space trails the segment

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Sportage's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The 2021 Sportage's carryover 2.4L naturally aspirated four (LX, S, EX) makes 181 hp — modest output that lands near the bottom of the compact SUV band, well behind the segment's turbo-four rivals.
175 lb-ft from the base 2.4L is low for the segment, reflecting the naturally aspirated engine's reliance on revs rather than low-end pull; the turbo's 260 lb-ft is a large step up but is restricted to the SX Turbo trim.
No period instrumented test of the specific 181-hp 2.4L FWD configuration was found; ~9.3 s is consistent with this facelift generation's carryover 2.4L powertrain and its close sibling the Hyundai Tucson 2.4L. The turbo's near-identical tested time despite 59 more hp underscores how little either engine moves the needle in this class.
The base 2.4L is smooth but strained at higher revs and short on midrange punch; the 2.0T adds usable torque but reviewers noted some turbo lag and a coarser note under load. Neither delivers the immediacy of the segment's better-refined turbo-fours.
The conventional 6-speed torque-converter automatic (shared across both engines, with different gearing for the turbo) shifts predictably and avoids CVT drone, but by 2021 it is a dated unit next to segment rivals' 8-speeds and CVTs, and reviewers noted occasional hesitance pairing with the base engine's modest output.
2,000 lbs is low even by compact-SUV standards and identical regardless of engine or drivetrain, reflecting that towing was not a design priority for this generation.
AWD is offered as an option across all four trims (LX, S, EX, SX Turbo) rather than gated to the top trim, which is a genuine strength — but the system is a basic on-demand setup with no low range, locking differential or terrain-specific modes, so it stops short of the top band.
Minimal ground clearance (6.4 in FWD / 6.8 in AWD), no skid plates, no locking differential and no dedicated off-road trim — this generation of Sportage is thoroughly pavement-oriented.
Two gasoline engine choices (181-hp 2.4L, 240-hp 2.0T) but no hybrid, PHEV, EV or diesel option — those arrived only with the redesigned 2023 Sportage. Two engines is more than a single take-it-or-leave-it powertrain, but with zero electrification this sits at the low end of the two-choice band.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Sportage's weakest categories.0.77F
23 MPG combined is middling for a gas-powertrain compact SUV — well below hybrid-equipped rivals and slightly behind the segment's stronger naturally aspirated fours.
20 MPG city reflects the naturally aspirated 2.4L's lack of any electrification or aggressive stop-start strategy to help in stop-and-go driving.
28 MPG highway on the FWD volume trim is the Sportage's strongest efficiency figure, though AWD gives back 3 MPG on the highway cycle.
A modest 16.4-gallon tank combined with middling MPG caps total range well below the segment's stronger long-range entries.
At $2,800/yr under EPA's standard 15,000 mi/yr assumption, running costs are on the higher side for the class, consistent with the Sportage's middling combined MPG.
Both the base 2.4L and the 2.0L Turbo run on regular 87-octane unleaded, with premium never required or needed to reach rated output — no added running-cost penalty from fuel grade.
3SafetyOne of the Sportage's strongest categories.2.37C+
NHTSA's overall 5-star rating is the ceiling result even though the frontal and rollover sub-scores are 4 stars.
Six of seven crashworthiness tests are Good, with one Marginal result on the updated side-impact test; the Top Safety Pick award requires the optional front crash prevention plus the SX Turbo's LED headlights, which the volume trim doesn't carry.
Forward collision warning, pedestrian-detection AEB, lane keep assist and lane departure warning are standard on the base LX, but blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are optional on LX (standard from the S trim up) and adaptive cruise control is confined to EX/SX.
IIHS rates the vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention Superior even on the standard-fit system, with an Advanced pedestrian rating on the optional setup — strong results for the class.
Blind-spot collision warning and rear cross-traffic alert are alert-only (no active braking intervention) and are standard from the S trim up but a paid option on the base LX.
Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Departure Warning are standard across the range, but this generation's LKA is corrective-steering-on-departure rather than continuous centering, and period reviews describe it as functional with occasional wander rather than confident.
Smart Cruise Control with stop-and-go is limited to EX/SX, and Highway Driving Assist (lane centering + distance keeping) is exclusive to the range-topping SX Turbo, so most of the lineup — including likely volume trims — has no adaptive cruise at all.
Highway Driving Assist on the SX Turbo is a hands-on Level 2 system (lane centering plus adaptive cruise); Kia had no hands-free highway driving offering in this generation.
IIHS rates the halogen projector headlights fitted to LX, S and EX Poor; only the SX Turbo's LED units with high-beam assist rate Acceptable, so the volume trim's headlights are the weak point of the car's otherwise strong crash-safety picture.
Reviewers note a high cowl/dash and rising beltline that hurt sightlines, plus notably weak rear visibility, particularly in low light — average-to-below-average for the segment despite a standard rearview camera.
IIHS gives the LATCH system its second-highest 'Acceptable' rating: tether anchors are easy to locate, but the lower anchors are set too deep in the seat bight to reach easily — a workable-with-some-digging result.
4Space & ComfortGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.87F
The 2021 Sportage is a strict 5-passenger compact SUV across all trims (LX, S, EX, SX Turbo) — this fourth-generation (QL facelift) body is not offered with a third row.
Front headroom figure is consistent across trims except where the panoramic sunroof cuts headroom on SX Turbo.
Standard front legroom for the volume trim.
Second-row headroom for the 5-seat cabin; applies since seating capacity is 5.
Second-row legroom is a relative strength versus this vehicle's cramped cargo hold.
No third row is offered on any 2021 Sportage trim — it is a strict two-row, 5-passenger compact SUV, unlike some class rivals that offer a token third row.
Cargo volume behind the second row is on the small side for the compact SUV class — a known weak point of this fourth-generation Sportage body versus newer rivals.
Maximum cargo capacity with seats folded is likewise modest for the segment.
LX includes a split-level cargo floor and the usual door/console bins, but there is no standout storage innovation for this generation.
Reviewers consistently describe the cabin as comfortable with a roomy-feeling back seat, though base-trim cloth seats and limited adjustability keep it out of the top tier.
Multiple reviews describe a composed, relatively comfortable ride that balances handling with compliance, without leading the segment.
Owner and press reviews note a quiet cabin at everyday speeds, though the naturally aspirated 2.4L can be audible under hard acceleration.
Heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate arrive on EX and up; ventilated seats and a heated wheel are SX Turbo-only, and the base LX/S trims that most buyers choose have neither.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Sportage's best-graded category.3.37B+
Entry LX FWD trim is the cheapest way into a 2021 Sportage; pricing sits mid-pack for a compact SUV.
EX AWD is the trim reviewers repeatedly flag as the value sweet spot, adding 18-in wheels, heated seats and dual-zone climate for a moderate step up from LX.
RepairPal's average annual repair figure is well below the compact-SUV norm, and Kia's low labor/parts costs keep scheduled maintenance cheap too.
Mid-pack retention for a mainstream compact SUV; not a resale leader like the CR-V/RAV4 but not a laggard either.
Kia's 5-year basic warranty sits at the top of the segment's normalization band.
Kia's 10-year/100k powertrain warranty is at the top of the mainstream segment and among the longest in the industry.
Kia's included maintenance is short (first three services only, through 18 months/18,000 mi), but the 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance program is more generous than a basic tow-only benefit.
$30,010 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (50% retained, or about $15,005) leaves about $15,005 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $19,205 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Sportage's strongest categories.2.43C+
Mixed signals between sources for this specific model year: Consumer Reports rated the 2021 Sportage below average for its model-year cohort, citing owner-reported engine oil consumption and turbocharger complaints on the 2.0T SX Turbo, while Kia's brand-level dependability studies (JD Power) are strong for the same period.
Kia was ranked the #1 mass-market brand in J.D. Power's 2021 US Vehicle Dependability Study (97 problems per 100 vehicles) and took the overall #1 spot (all brands, mass-market and luxury) the following year, reflecting a strong multi-year dependability standing for the brand around this model year.
Two NHTSA recalls touch the 2021 model year: campaign 21V137 (HECU short-circuit engine-compartment fire risk, part of a broader industry-wide Hyundai-Kia electrical recall, free fuse/software fix) and 22V-703 (tow hitch harness moisture/debris fire risk, accessory-specific). Both are real fire-risk campaigns rather than trivial ones, but neither is a repeat/systemic powertrain failure pattern specific to this Sportage generation, and overall complaint volume (32 on CarComplaints) is modest for the model year.
The 2.4L GDI base four and 2.0T turbo four are outside the model years named in the Theta II connecting-rod-bearing class-action settlement (Sportage 2011-2013, later expanded to some 2019 units), so this generation avoids that specific defect, but GDI-family carbon buildup and owner-reported oil consumption/turbo issues on 2021 units keep the reputation short of proven long-mileage confidence.
Reviewers describe an upscale-feeling cabin for the class with soft-touch trim on the dash and window sills, competitive with or ahead of mainstream compact-SUV rivals, offset by scattered hard and glossy plastics (center console, door inserts) that owners note scratch over time.
No widespread panel-gap, rattle, or misassembly complaints surfaced for this model year in owner-complaint or review sources; general road tests describe solid, unremarkable assembly consistent with a mainstream compact SUV, but coverage specific to fit-and-finish is limited so this is inferred from broader review tone.
Kia's US dealer network is dense and nationwide, and the brand scored 855 on J.D. Power's 2021 Customer Service Index, a solid but not class-leading result (4th among major brands that year).
High US sales volume for the Sportage nameplate supports broad parts availability and aftermarket support, and mainstream Kia parts/labor pricing runs below premium and most Japanese-brand compact-SUV rivals; the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty also caps major-component repair exposure for original owners.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Sportage's weakest categories.0.43F
Kia standardized an 8-inch UVO touchscreen across the entire 2021 Sportage lineup, including base LX — a rare case of the base trim matching the top trim's screen size.
Kia's UVO interface of this era is generally praised for being straightforward and quick to respond, though its graphics and feature depth trail newer systems.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2021 Sportage trim, but only in wired form — wireless projection was not offered on this generation on any trim.
UVO's voice command handles basic requests adequately; native navigation is available on EX/SX Turbo but most owners default to CarPlay/Android Auto maps.
Base 6-speaker/160-watt system is unremarkable, but the optional Harman/Kardon 8-speaker 320W system (EX Tech package, SX Turbo) is a genuine step up.
This generation uses traditional analog gauges with a small supplementary display (up to a 4.2-inch color TFT on top trims) — no full digital cluster is offered.
The 2021 Sportage predates Kia's over-the-air update rollout; UVO of this era has no meaningful OTA capability beyond dealer-installed updates.
UVO eServices (renamed Kia Connect in Sept. 2021) provides remote start with climate/timer control, remote lock/unlock, and vehicle locate via smartphone app, bundled as a subscription after an initial trial.
Ports are legacy USB-A throughout the cabin with no USB-C, and wireless phone charging is not offered on this generation.
Smart key proximity entry with push-button start arrives at EX and up; base LX/S trims still use a traditional key fob without proximity unlock.
A rearview camera is standard fleet-wide and rear parking sensors join on S trim and up, but no 360-degree surround-view camera is offered anywhere in the lineup this generation.
No head-up display is offered on any 2021 Sportage trim, including range-topping SX Turbo — the feature didn't arrive on Sportage until the fifth-generation redesign.
8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.26D
Rear door openings and LATCH anchors are conventional and easy to use for a compact SUV, but 38.2 in of rear legroom is tighter than class leaders once a rear-facing seat is installed.
IIHS rated the 2021 Sportage Good across all six crashworthiness tests with a Superior front crash prevention rating and standard forward collision warning/AEB, but blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert only arrive at S trim and up, leaving base-LX family buyers without them.
The cabin is comfortable for four on medium trips, but rear HVAC vents and rear USB charging are absent on lower trims, and cargo space (30.7 cu ft) is tight once a stroller or luggage joins car seats.
Reviewers describe an easy, relaxed daily driver with light steering and a composed ride, making it low-fatigue in traffic.
The base 2.4L four rates roughly 23/28/25 mpg city/hwy/combined (FWD) — average for a gas compact SUV of this era, not a standout for commuting economy.
A compact footprint and a tight 34.8 ft turning diameter make it easy to place in the city, aided by a standard rearview camera; the lack of a 360-camera on any trim is the main ceiling.
Maximum tow rating is only 2,000 lbs with trailer brakes (1,653 lbs without), well below what any real work duty would require, and there is no bed or dedicated cargo-work configuration.
The Sportage has a reasonable general reliability reputation but is not fleet-proven or marketed for hard-use/work contexts, and no work-durability trims (skid plates, heavy-duty options) exist.
Roof rails are available on some trims for light racks, but there is no onboard power outlet, no bed tie-downs, and essentially no upfit ecosystem for jobsite use.
A quiet, composed highway ride and standard forward collision/lane-keep assist help on long trips, but the class-typical ~500-mile highway range and lack of adaptive cruise on lower trims cap it at a solid-but-unremarkable tourer.
AWD is available across trims with 8.3 in of ground clearance and standard roof rails from S trim up, giving genuine light-duty gravel/trail and gear-hauling ability without being an off-road specialist.
60/40 split-folding rear seats and available roof rails handle normal gear loads reasonably, but the below-average 30.7/60.7 cu ft cargo figures make bulky gear more of a squeeze than in larger-cargo rivals.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.88C-
Reviews describe secure, composed cornering with decent body control for the class, but nothing that stands out as class-leading dynamics.
Steering is accurate enough for daily use but numb, typical of Kia's electric power steering tuning of this era.
No published instrumented stopping-distance data was found for the 2021 model; braking is assumed adequate and unremarkable, consistent with mainstream compact-SUV peers of this generation.
The 181-hp 2.4L four paired with a 6-speed automatic shifts smoothly with no start/stop or hybrid transitions to manage; response is adequate but not brisk off the line.
The naturally aspirated four is audible and somewhat coarse under hard acceleration, though quiet at cruise; unremarkable rather than offensive.
A tight turning circle for the compact SUV class, near the favorable end of the normalization band.
Good outward visibility and a comfortable, fairly adjustable driving position are consistently cited strengths; controls are logically laid out.
Base and mid trims are pleasant but appliance-like; the SX Turbo's 237-hp 2.0L adds some verve but the volume-trim 2.4L is forgettable to drive.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.00C
Base LX is reasonably equipped but the meaningful convenience features (heated seats, power driver's seat, dual-zone climate, 18-in wheels) don't arrive until EX — competitive, not class-leading generosity at base.
Reviewers consistently frame the 2021 Sportage as a strong value play on the strength of its long warranty and simple, well-priced lineup relative to Honda/Toyota rivals.
Four trims (LX, S, EX, SX Turbo) each offered with FWD or AWD is a reasonable spread but no third row, hybrid, or work-oriented variant to widen the lineup further in this final year of the outgoing generation.
2021 was Kia America's best sales year in company history, surpassing 700,000 units, with the Sportage cited among the models hitting an all-time annual sales record.
Kia's image was climbing by 2021 on the strength of its warranty and design but was not yet an aspirational brand on par with Toyota/Honda mainstream loyalty.
2021 fell during the industry-wide semiconductor shortage, when inventory was tight and incentives on in-demand compact SUVs like the Sportage were minimal to non-existent industry-wide.
2021 is the final model year of the fourth-generation (QL) Sportage on its 2017 platform; the redesigned fifth-generation (NQ5) was unveiled in June 2021 for the following model year, so 2021 buyers were purchasing a car on the eve of a full redesign.
Reviewers rated the outgoing Sportage as competent and good value (TCC 6.7/10) but rarely the top pick over the CR-V/RAV4/CX-5, and it collected no major comparison-test wins or NACTOY-caliber awards in this final year of the generation.
