The verdict
A struggling sports car, strong on performance and held back by efficiency.
The 2019 AMG GT is a theatrical two-seat V8 sports car: the base coupe makes 469 hp and 465 lb-ft, hits 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, and ranks among the most entertaining cars in its class to drive. Almost everything else costs you. It started at $113,695, returns 18 MPG on premium, was never crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, kept key driver aids on the option list, and was the last year with the old 8.4-inch COMAND screen and analog gauges. Buy it as a weekend car for two, and look for a used example with the Driver Assistance Package fitted.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe AMG GT's best-graded category.2.88B-
The 2019 US coupe lineup was GT, GT S, GT C and GT R, all built around the M178 4.0L biturbo V8. The base GT is the volume trim at 469 hp, the output it gained in the 2017 facelift.
The base car's 465 lb-ft (630 Nm) comes across a broad low-rpm band, which is a very high figure for a two-seat sports car.
The quoted 0–60 mph time for the 2019 base coupe is 3.9 s. That is very quick, though a step behind a Corvette Z51 or a 911 Carrera S.
The hot-V M178 biturbo V8 delivers strong, linear thrust with minimal turbo lag and an evocative soundtrack, and reviewers rank it among the best engines in the class. It is loud and rough-edged rather than silky, which keeps it out of the top band.
The rear-mounted 7-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch transaxle shifts quickly and decisively when driven hard. Reviewers note jerky, hesitant behavior at low speeds and in stop-and-go traffic, and there is no manual option.
Every two-door AMG GT is rear-wheel drive through a transaxle. 4MATIC+ is offered only on the separate four-door GT 53/63.
There is one 4.0L biturbo V8 in four tunes (469/515/550/577 hp), all paired with the same 7-speed DCT. The two-door car offers no six-cylinder, hybrid or electric option.
2Efficiency & RangeThe AMG GT's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The EPA rates the 2019 base AMG GT Coupe at 18 MPG combined, which is low even among V8 sports cars.
The EPA city rating is 16 MPG.
The EPA highway rating is 22 MPG.
The EPA publishes no range figure for gas cars, so range is calculated as the standard 65 L (17.2 gal) tank times 18 MPG combined, about 310 miles.
The EPA's annual fuel-cost estimate for the base coupe on premium fuel is $4,500, near the top of the fleet.
Every two-door AMG GT variant requires premium unleaded, and the biturbo V8's thirst makes that requirement costly.
3SafetyGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.34F
NHTSA lists the 2019 AMG GT coupe but has never crash-tested it, so every NCAP rating reads 'Not Rated'. The framework records a car NHTSA has never rated as 0 stars.
IIHS never tested the first-generation (C190) AMG GT, so it has no TSP/TSP+ award and no crashworthiness results. The aluminum spaceframe is credible, but nothing independent backs it up, so this scores below the mid-band.
2019 is the last pre-facelift model year, and NHTSA lists neither forward collision warning nor lane departure warning as standard on the 2-door. AEB and DISTRONIC come in a ~$2,250 Driver Assistance Package, and Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assist in an $875 Lane Tracking Package. Standard aids are ATTENTION ASSIST, PRE-SAFE, parking sensors and a rearview camera, which is thin for a car at this price.
Active Brake Assist with full AEB is optional only, and IIHS never ran a front-crash-prevention test on the AMG GT. Because forward collision warning is not standard, many 2019 coupes on the used market lack AEB entirely.
On the 2019 coupe, Blind Spot Assist appears as part of the optional Lane Tracking Package rather than as standard equipment. Active Blind Spot Assist (which intervenes) and cross-traffic braking require the Driver Assistance Package. All of it is available, but none of it is standard.
NHTSA lists lane departure warning as not standard. Lane Keeping Assist sits in the Lane Tracking Package, and Active Steering Assist in the Driver Assistance Package. When fitted, it is Mercedes' older-generation system, which reviewers rarely engage in a sports car.
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with stop-and-go is a capable, mature system, but it is a ~$2,250 package option rather than standard on the coupe, which docks the score.
There is no hands-free highway system. The optional steering assist requires hands on the wheel, and Mercedes DRIVE PILOT was never offered on the AMG GT.
LED High Performance headlamps are standard, with adaptive LED headlamps and Adaptive Highbeam Assist available. IIHS never rated the AMG GT's headlights, so the score rests on Mercedes LED hardware of that era, which generally rates Acceptable to Good on tested models.
The very long hood, low seating position, thick C-pillars and small, shallow rear hatch glass leave large rear three-quarter blind zones. A rearview camera and parking sensors help in a car park, but no surround-view camera fixes the sightlines on the road.
4Space & ComfortGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.67F
Every trim of the first-generation (C190) AMG GT coupe, the 2019 model included, has two seats and no rear seats. A 2+2 layout only arrived with the C192 generation for 2024.
The low cabin still offers a generous 39.5 in of front headroom for a sports coupe. The body shell carried over unchanged into the 2020 facelift, which publishes the same figure.
Mercedes lists front legroom as 'TBA' on its C190 AMG GT spec sheets, so a typical sports-car figure is assumed. The deep footwell and far-back seat suit tall drivers.
The rear hatch opens onto a shallow 10.1 cu ft load area above the rear transaxle, with no folding seats to extend it.
The pre-facelift car's wide transmission tunnel is covered in V8-style switch banks and the COMAND controller. That leaves a small armrest bin, cupholders, a shallow cubby and a parcel shelf behind the seats.
The power-adjustable AMG sport seats are supportive and fine for the driver over long stints. Getting in and out over the wide sill into the low seat is awkward, and there is no rear seat.
The 2019 base GT lacks the GT S's adaptive AMG Ride Control and rides on passive sport dampers. On a stiff, short-wheelbase transaxle chassis with staggered low-profile tires, that makes it firm and busy over broken pavement.
Wide tires roar on coarse surfaces, and the V8 and sport exhaust drone at highway speeds. It is louder on the highway than a 911 or a Supra.
Dual-zone automatic climate and heated power seats are present, as expected at this price. Ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel are package options, which is thin standard equipment for a car of about $114k.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the AMG GT's weakest categories.0.00F
The 469 hp base GT Coupe was the entry 2-door AMG GT in the US for 2019, the last pre-facelift year, and is priced far above the top of the coupe band. Unlike Canada and Australia, the US kept the base and GT S coupes that year.
This scorecard treats the base GT Coupe as the volume 2-door trim, consistent with the 2020 scorecard. Typical options (AMG Night/Carbon packages, Burmester audio, panoramic roof, driver-assist package) add roughly $8–12K.
AMG service intervals, large brakes, staggered performance tires and dealer labor rates make each visit costly. Early-life repairs fall under the 4-year/50,000-mile warranty.
KBB values a 2019 AMG GT at about $50K private party after roughly seven years, about 44% of the base coupe's $113.7K price. Backing that out to the five-year mark gives roughly 55% retained, below the 2020 facelift car, which holds value better.
This is Mercedes-Benz USA's standard New Vehicle Limited Warranty, which covers AMG models on the same terms.
Mercedes-Benz offers no extended powertrain warranty on gas models, so the biturbo V8 is covered only by the 4/50 basic term. That is the bottom of the band.
Roadside assistance runs for the length of the warranty, and Mercedes me connect comes with trial services. Scheduled maintenance is not included; it is sold separately as a prepaid plan.
$123,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (55% retained, or about $67,650) leaves about $55,350 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,600 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $60,950 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the AMG GT's strongest categories.2.51C+

Power publishes a model-level rating for the low-volume two-door AMG GT. 2019 is a carry-over year in the first generation (2016–2023), after the 2017 facelift and before the 2020 cockpit refresh. Owner sentiment averages about 4/5, with electrical, battery and A/C glitches the recurring complaints, which puts it in the average band.
Over 2018–2022, Mercedes-Benz typically scored near or below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study and sat in the lower half of Consumer Reports' brand rankings. That is mid-to-low pack, not consistently bottom-third.
NHTSA lists only two campaigns covering the 2019 two-door GT, and both are fleet-wide eCall emergency-call software fixes. Neither touches the powertrain, fire risk or crash structure. The many other 2019 'AMG GT' recalls (fuel, ESP, wiring) name only the four-door GT 53/63, which is a different platform.
The hand-built M178 4.0 L biturbo V8 (469 hp in the post-facelift base GT) belongs to AMG's M177/M178 family. That family has been in wide use since 2014 with no systemic failure pattern. The rear-transaxle 7-speed dual-clutch is robust, but it is costly when clutch packs or mechatronics need work.
The cabin uses rich leather, a V8-style console of metal switchgear and nappa options. The 2019 car still has the pre-refresh analog cluster and the dated COMAND interface, and reviewers say it trails a 911's cabin for perceived quality at the price.
AMG assembly is generally to a high standard. Owners report scattered interior creaks and trim rattles over the stiff ride, which is typical for the class. No initial-quality data is published for this low-volume model.
Mercedes-Benz USA has roughly 380 dealers nationwide, far more than sports-car rivals such as Porsche. Not every dealer is equipped for AMG GT-specific work, and service satisfaction sits near the premium-brand average.
Many parts are model-specific, including body panels, transaxle components and, where optioned, carbon-ceramic brakes. Parts are dealer-sourced and expensive, and independent-shop coverage is thin compared with Mercedes' mainstream models.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.71F
2019 was the last pre-facelift US model year, so the coupe keeps the freestanding 8.4-in COMAND display. It is operated through the console controller and touchpad rather than by touch. The 10.25-in screen arrived with the 2020 model year.
The pre-facelift COMAND, with a small non-touch screen, deep menus and a fiddly touchpad, felt dated even in 2019. It trails Porsche's PCM 4 and the Corvette's system.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are listed for the 2019 car through COMAND smartphone integration, over a wired USB connection only. Sources disagree on whether it was standard or a package option, and wireless projection was not offered.
COMAND navigation and command-style voice control are included, but there is no natural-language 'Hey Mercedes' assistant. Most owners will default to phone mapping.
Burmester surround sound, with a Burmester High-End 3D upgrade on the option list, is strong, but exhaust and road noise blunt it. The 2019 cat10 notes that Burmester audio costs extra on the base coupe.
The 2019 car keeps analog dials either side of a small color multifunction display. The 12.3-in fully digital cluster arrived only with the 2020 facelift.
The pre-facelift COMAND car has no meaningful over-the-air vehicle software updates. Map and software updates go through the dealer or downloads.
The Mercedes me connect app offers remote lock/unlock, vehicle locate and status. There is no digital key, and the services become a subscription after the trial.
There are a couple of USB ports and a 12V socket in the console and armrest. Wireless charging was not offered, and there is no AC outlet.
The 2019 base GT uses push-button start, but Keyless-Go proximity entry is an option on it; the GT S gets it as standard. There is no phone-as-key and no factory remote start.
A rearview camera and parking sensors are standard. No surround-view system was confirmed for the 2019 coupe, and there is no automated parking.
No head-up display was offered on the first-generation two-door AMG GT. In the 2019 GT range, a HUD was an option only on the four-door.
8Use-Case FitOne of the AMG GT's weakest categories.0.00F
It is a strict two-seater with no rear seat and no LATCH-equipped rear position. A child seat could only go in the front passenger seat, so daily family logistics are impractical.
NHTSA and IIHS never crash-tested the car. Forward collision warning, lane departure warning and blind-spot assist are all package options on a car of about $114k, and the two seats rule out rear-occupant scenarios.
It cannot carry four occupants at all. With two aboard, the 10.1 cu ft hatch area fits only soft weekend bags.
The base car's passive sport suspension rides firmly, the dual-clutch transaxle is jerky at crawling speeds, and the low seat and wide sills make getting in and out a chore. Comfort mode and a tractable V8 keep it livable but tiring.
A 4.0L biturbo V8 on premium fuel returns high-teens MPG combined, and staggered performance tires and big brakes are costly consumables. It is an expensive car to commute in.
A very long hood, a wide body, a 41 ft turning circle and poor rear three-quarter visibility make tight city parking stressful. The standard rear camera and sensors help, but there is no surround view.
It has no tow rating, minimal payload, two seats and a shallow 10.1 cu ft hatch, so it is not work-capable.
It is a luxury sports car with leather interiors and low-profile tires, entirely unsuited to hard use.
It has no onboard power, tie-downs, hitch or rack provisions.
The supportive seats and effortless V8 thrust make it a capable GT for two. Highway drone, the firm passive suspension, thirsty fuel use and package-only adaptive cruise limit its endurance.
It is rear-drive only with low ground clearance and summer-biased performance tires, and it has no roof or hitch provisions, so it is pavement-bound.
A shallow 10.1 cu ft hatch area with no folding seats, roof rails or hitch fits weekend bags but nothing bulky.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the AMG GT's strongest categories.2.74B-
The front-mid-engine, rear-transaxle layout gives near-ideal weight distribution and huge grip. The 2019 base car does without the GT S's adaptive Ride Control and electronic diff and the GT C's rear-axle steering, and its tail can be snappy at the limit.
The steering is quick and precisely weighted. Reviewers find it slightly hyper-reactive just off center and lighter on feedback than a 911's.
Large AMG high-performance brakes stop strongly and resist fade, and carbon-ceramics are optional. The pedal is firm and progressive.
The 469-hp biturbo V8 responds immediately with little lag. The rear-mounted 7-speed DCT is jerky and hesitant at parking and crawl speeds, which costs refinement in daily use.
The hot-V V8 sounds glorious under load, which enthusiasts love. It also drones on the highway and crackles on cold start, which some owners find intrusive.
A long wheelbase and wide front tires give the base coupe a large 41 ft turning circle. The C190 chassis and steering carried over unchanged into 2020, so that year's published figure applies.
The low, rear-set driving position over the long hood feels special and adjusts well. Wide sills make entry hard, the pre-facelift console is crowded with switch banks and a fiddly touchpad, and rear three-quarter visibility is poor.
A 469-hp front-mid V8, a theatrical exhaust and a rear-drive chassis that rewards commitment make it an enthusiast favorite and a genuine 'long way home' car.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.77C-
The base car comes with the 469 hp biturbo V8, leather and COMAND navigation. At about $114K, though, it lacks adaptive damping (AMG Ride Control), the electronic limited-slip differential and Keyless-Go, all of which come standard on the GT S. Burmester audio and driver assists cost extra, and 2019 still used the pre-facelift analog cluster and smaller screen.
Performance is strong, with 0–60 mph in about 3.9 s, but at about $114K the base car costs nearly twice as much as a 2019 Corvette Grand Sport that matches its pace. It is also priced close to a Porsche 911 Carrera S, which reviewers rate as more complete.
The 2019 US 2-door range was the broadest the GT ever offered: GT, GT S, GT C and GT R coupes, plus GT and GT C roadsters, spanning 469–577 hp in fairly even steps. It came only with rear-drive and the dual-clutch automatic.
The AMG GT was a low-volume halo car, selling an estimated low thousands of 2-door units a year in the US, and the Porsche 911 dominated the segment. From 2019 on, reported US 'AMG GT' sales figures were inflated by the new 4-door coupe.
AMG is one of the most aspirational performance sub-brands. The GT followed the SLS as AMG's in-house halo, and the GT R ('Beast of the Green Hell') gave the range track credibility.
In 2019, before the chip shortage, slow-moving luxury halo cars like the AMG GT routinely carried dealer discounts and Mercedes lease support. Run-out discounts were common because the facelifted 2020 car was imminent.
MY2019 was the fourth year of a platform launched in 2016, with only the 2018 power bump and Panamericana grille as updates. The facelift with new cockpit tech arrived the following model year (2020), so 2019 buyers got the outgoing interior.
Reviewers praised the V8 soundtrack, the styling and the GT R's track ability. The base car usually trailed the Porsche 911 on refinement, ride and practicality, and was rarely a comparison-test winner or award pick.
