The verdict
A struggling compact suv, strong on ownership and held back by performance.
The 2020 Outlander's trump card is a standard third row — a rarity in the compact-SUV class — bolted to a bargain $26,090 starting price and a segment-crushing 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. But the 166-hp four-cylinder is slow (10.0 seconds 0-60), the CVT drones under load, cargo space shrinks to just 10.3 cu ft with the third row in use, and Consumer Reports flags below-average predicted reliability tied to known CVT wear issues. It's a compelling value pick for budget-minded families who want occasional extra seats, not a vehicle for anyone chasing refinement, resale value, or tech.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Standard third row most rivals don't offer
- Warranty coverage that embarrasses the segment
- One of the cheapest ways into a compact SUV
What holds it back
- Slow, unrefined acceleration
- Cargo space collapses with the third row up
- Below-average predicted reliability

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Outlander's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Volume trim (2.4L MIVEC I4, standard on 5 of 6 trims) makes 166 hp; the GT-exclusive 3.0L V6 is meaningfully stronger but is a single top trim.
Volume trim's 2.4L I4 peak torque; GT's V6 is notably higher but limited to that one trim.
Instrumented test of the volume 2.4L I4 configuration; Car and Driver specifically called the base powertrain's acceleration lethargic.
The 2.4L I4/CVT pairing is adequate but coarse under load — reviewers consistently describe the four-cylinder as noisy and unenthusiastic when accelerating, with the CVT letting revs flare.
Standard-trim CVT exhibits the class-typical drone and rubber-band feel under hard acceleration; the GT's conventional 6-speed automatic (paired only with the V6) is smoother but not the volume-trim gearbox.
Manufacturer maximum towing rating across the 2020 Outlander lineup, achieved only by the V6 GT; four-cylinder trims are rated far lower.
Mitsubishi's Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) is optional on ES/SE/LE/SP/SEL and standard on GT, with selectable Normal/Snow/Gravel/Lock drive modes — genuinely more sophisticated than a basic reactive AWD system, though not standard fleet-wide.
Pavement-oriented crossover: modest ~8.5-in ground clearance, no low-range gearing or locking differentials, and no dedicated off-road trim — S-AWC's Gravel/Lock modes are the extent of its off-pavement provision.
Three distinct configurations for 2020: the 2.4L I4, the GT-exclusive 3.0L V6, and the separately-badged Outlander PHEV — a genuinely electrified option alongside two gas engines, though the PHEV is its own sub-line rather than a trim choice on the gas model.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Outlander's strongest categories.1.62D
EPA combined rating for the volume 2.4L I4 AWD configuration; FWD trims rate 1 MPG higher.
EPA city rating for the volume 2.4L I4 AWD configuration.
EPA highway rating for the volume 2.4L I4 AWD configuration.
Total range computed by fueleconomy.gov from the 15.8-gallon tank and 26 MPG combined rating for the AWD 2.4L I4; FWD's larger 16.6-gal tank and 27 MPG yields a slightly longer ~448 mi range.
EPA standard-assumption annual fuel cost for the volume AWD 2.4L I4 configuration.
Both the 2.4L I4 and 3.0L V6 run on regular unleaded across the lineup, with no premium recommendation on any gas trim.
3SafetyOne of the Outlander's strongest categories.1.44D
NHTSA's overall rating for the 2020 Outlander is 4 stars, pulled down by a 4-star frontal result despite 5-star side-impact performance; not a 5-star car across the board.
All six IIHS crashworthiness tests (small overlap front driver/passenger, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraints) are Good, and IIHS named the 2019-2020 Outlander a Top Safety Pick — but the award is conditional on the optional LED headlights and front crash prevention, which the volume SE/halogen trims don't carry, so the car as most commonly sold doesn't clear the award's headlight bar.
Forward Collision Mitigation (AEB), Lane Departure Warning and Automatic High Beam are standard from the SE volume trim up (absent only on the base ES), but blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are a paid package on SE and standard only from LE up, and adaptive cruise is standard only on the top GT trim — core AEB coverage is broad, but BSM/ACC are gated to upper trims exactly as the mid-band guidance describes.
IIHS rated the optional front crash prevention system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle avoidance (avoided both the 12 mph and 25 mph tests), but only Basic for daytime pedestrian detection, and no nighttime pedestrian test result is published for this generation — strong core AEB let down by weak pedestrian performance.
Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are alert-only (no braking intervention) and cost extra as a package on the volume SE trim, becoming standard only from LE up — coverage reaches most of the lineup but isn't included at the price point most buyers actually pay.
The 2020 Outlander offers Lane Departure Warning with steering-wheel vibration only — there is no active lane-keep-assist or lane-centering function in this generation (Mitsubishi's MI-PILOT Assist lane-centering system didn't arrive until the redesigned 2022 Outlander), so this item scores in the crude/absent band.
Adaptive cruise control is standard only on the range-topping GT trim and is not paired with any lane-centering or highway-assist function in this generation, so availability is narrow and the feature is basic distance-keeping cruise rather than an integrated assist suite.
No hands-free highway driving system is offered on the 2020 Outlander at any trim level.
IIHS rated the halogen projector headlights fitted to ES, SE, LE, SP and SEL — i.e. the volume trims — Poor; only the LED units on SEL Touring and GT scored Acceptable, so the headlights on the car most buyers drive home are in the bottom IIHS tier.
Reviewers describe large, deep glass and tall, short door openings that make for good outward sightlines and easy entry/exit, typical of this Outlander generation's upright compact-SUV greenhouse.
This generation's Outlander carries two complete LATCH lower-anchor sets in the outboard second-row positions plus a center tether, and IIHS rates the system's ease of use Acceptable (its second-highest tier) — workable but with lower anchors set deep in the seat bight and tether anchors that can be confused with other hardware.
4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.32D
Three-row, seven-passenger seating was standard across the 2020 Outlander range — a rarity in the compact-SUV class.
Front headroom sits mid-pack for the compact SUV segment.
Front legroom is near the low end of the compact SUV band.
Second-row headroom is competitive for the segment, though reviewers note rear passengers must duck under a low roofline entering the car.
Second-row legroom is on the tighter side of the compact SUV band.
The Outlander is one of the few compact SUVs offering a third row at all, but it is low-mounted, knees-up, and reviewers consistently describe it as kid-only or short-trip-only for adults.
Cargo volume behind the second row is below the segment midpoint, and drops sharply (to 10.3 cu ft) with the third row in use.
Maximum cargo volume with all rear seats folded is on the low side of the compact SUV band.
Conventional console, door-pocket and underfloor storage with nothing distinctive called out by reviewers — competitive but unremarkable.
Base-trim cloth seats draw no particular praise or criticism; leather and heating are reserved for the top GT trim, leaving most buyers with adequate but unremarkable seats.
Composed over minor road imperfections but larger impacts like potholes transmit into the cabin — solidly middle-of-the-pack.
The 2.4L four-cylinder is notably vocal under load through the CVT, and reviewers call out engine noise at higher RPM as an intrusion at highway speed.
Heated seats and a heated steering wheel are reserved for the range-topping GT trim only, with no rear climate amenities called out on volume trims — sparse comfort equipment for the bulk of the lineup.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Outlander's best-graded category.2.61C+
Base ES FWD trim starting price plus Mitsubishi's standard 2020 destination charge; low for the compact SUV segment.
SE is the volume trim for the 2020 Outlander lineup, sitting just above base ES with added convenience/safety content.
Edmunds True Cost to Own projects above-segment-average 5-year maintenance and repair spend, pushed by a costly Year 3/Year 5 service interval.
Multiple residual-value trackers put the Outlander's 5-year depreciation between 47.5% and 55%, well behind class-leading compact SUVs like the RAV4 and CR-V.
Mitsubishi's 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty is at the top of the mainstream compact SUV class, which typically offers 3yr/36k.
Segment-leading powertrain coverage, double the length of most mainstream rivals' 5yr/60k terms.
No complimentary scheduled maintenance is included on the 2020 model year (that benefit arrived with the 2024 Outlander), but Mitsubishi bundles 5 years/unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a 7-year anti-corrosion warranty, ahead of the typical 3yr/36k roadside plan offered by mainstream rivals.
$27,290 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (45% retained, or about $12,281) leaves about $15,010 in depreciation. Add the projected $10,043 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $25,053 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.33D
Consumer Reports scored the 2020 Outlander's predicted reliability at 43/100 (below average), with predicted owner satisfaction at just 2/5; JD Power's separate quality index for the model ran higher, but CR's dedicated reliability prediction — the more directly relevant metric — is clearly below-average, and it aligns with widely-reported CVT wear concerns on this generation.
Mitsubishi jumped to 6th overall (top Japanese brand) in JD Power's 2020 Initial Quality Study, a sharp year-over-year improvement, but Consumer Reports has historically placed the brand in the lower half of its dependability rankings and CR's own Outlander prediction is below average — a mixed, mid-pack picture rather than a clear leader or laggard.
Two NHTSA campaigns touch the 2019-2020 Outlander: a second-row seat belt assembly recall (20V280000) and a later liftgate gas-spring rupture recall (25V507000) — both real safety fixes but neither powertrain-systemic nor indicative of a repeated defect pattern, consistent with typical recall activity for the segment.
The volume 2.4L I4 trim pairs with a Jatco CVT that has a documented reputation for premature belt/pulley wear, slipping and shuddering — commonly surfacing between 60,000-100,000 miles, especially under heavy load or in hot climates — a genuine red flag for the CVT-equipped trims that make up most sales, even though the GT's V6/6-speed automatic is not implicated.
Consumer Reports and multiple outlets describe the cabin as dated, plasticky and crude for the price, with hard plastics dominating surfaces above knee level and an eight-inch infotainment unit that looks and feels behind the segment — a materials package that lags mainstream compact-SUV rivals.
No pattern of rattles or misassembly turns up in owner or press complaints, and the brand's strong showing in JD Power's 2020 Initial Quality Study (6th overall, top Japanese brand) points to solid assembly consistency even though the cabin materials themselves are criticized separately.
Mitsubishi's US network ran roughly 325-350 dealers in 2020 — a fraction of mainstream Japanese rivals like Toyota or Honda — meaning noticeably thinner geographic coverage and longer drives for service in many markets, even though existing dealers are not singled out for poor service satisfaction.
RepairPal rates the Outlander 4.0/5 for reliability (8th of 26 compact SUVs) with an average annual repair cost of $519 — below the segment average — though as a lower-volume brand its aftermarket parts ecosystem is thinner than mainstream competitors, so availability leans on dealer stock more than for a Toyota or Honda.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Outlander's weakest categories.0.17F
The 8-inch Smartphone-link Display Audio screen on SE-and-up trims is small relative to the rapidly growing compact-SUV segment norm.
Mitsubishi's Smartphone-Link Display Audio is a simple, phone-projection-first system rather than a capable native interface — usable but basic, with owners routed to CarPlay/Android Auto for most tasks.
Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto came standard on SE and above (and only via an optional Convenience Package on base ES); no wireless projection was offered on any 2020 trim.
The SDA system leans on phone-based Siri/Google Assistant and Apple/Google Maps rather than a strong built-in nav or voice assistant; most owners bypass the native system entirely.
A premium branded sound system is offered on the GT trim, with adequate but unremarkable audio on lower trims.
The 2020 Outlander retains analog gauges with a small monochrome trip-computer display across the lineup; no configurable digital cluster was offered on any trim this generation.
The 2020 Outlander predates Mitsubishi's telematics-based Mitsubishi Connect platform (introduced for MY2022+) and has no over-the-air update capability.
No smartphone companion app with remote start/climate/lock functions was available for the 2020 model year — Mitsubishi's remote-services app launched with the 2022 model year onward.
Base ES offers a single front USB port; SE and above add rear USB ports for a modest total, with no wireless charging pad offered on any 2020 trim.
Proximity keyless entry and push-button start are available from SE upward, with remote start offered as well — competitive but not class-leading.
A rear backup camera is standard across the lineup, with a multi-view (360-degree) camera system reserved for the top GT trim.
No head-up display was offered on any 2020 Outlander trim.
8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.18D
Standard three-row seating and 60/40-split second/third rows give families extra flexibility for loading kids and gear, though the low-mounted third row and modest door openings keep it from the class benchmark.
For 2020 Mitsubishi made forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning standard on all but the base ES trim, and IIHS rated the Outlander 'Good' across crashworthiness tests with a 'Superior' front-crash-prevention score — though NHTSA's overall rating was only 4-star.
Cargo space collapses to just 10.3 cu ft with the third row in use, and reviewers describe the rearmost seats as fine only for short hops, limiting the Outlander's usefulness on longer family trips with all seats occupied.
Light steering, a compact footprint, and a smooth-shifting CVT make the Outlander easy to live with in stop-and-go traffic, even though the 2.4L four is unhurried off the line.
EPA-rated 24/29/26 MPG city/highway/combined for the 2.4L AWD four-cylinder trails many compact-SUV rivals that post 28-30+ MPG combined, making per-mile commuting costs a bit above average for the class.
A tight 34.8-ft turning diameter and standard backup camera make the Outlander easy to place in tight urban parking, with a 360-degree camera available on the top trim for extra confidence.
Towing tops out at 1,500 lbs on the volume four-cylinder trims (3,500 lbs only on the niche GT V6), which is modest even by compact-crossover standards and leaves little headroom for real work duty.
The Outlander has no meaningful fleet or commercial-duty reputation and is positioned as a family crossover rather than a work-hardened vehicle.
No onboard power outlets, tie-down provisions, or upfit ecosystem were called out for the 2020 Outlander — it offers essentially no work-focused equipment.
Standard FCW/AEB/LDW aid highway fatigue on most trims, and 29-MPG highway economy gives reasonable range between fill-ups, but engine noise under load and a firm response to larger bumps keep it from being a standout mile-eater.
Available all-wheel-control (AWC/S-AWC) drive and 8.5 in of ground clearance give the Outlander reasonable light-duty capability for gravel roads and foul weather, with standard roof rails for external gear.
Folding second and third rows open up to 63.3 cu ft with all seats down, and roof rails add external capacity, though absolute cargo volume trails many two-row compact-SUV rivals.
9Driving ExperienceGrades below the middle of the scale.1.25D
The volume four-cylinder trims exhibit noticeable body roll and a soft, comfort-tuned chassis; period reviews describe the handling as unwieldy rather than composed, though it remains secure at normal speeds.
Steering is light and numb, prioritizing low-effort parking-lot maneuvers over road feedback.
No braking deficiencies were flagged in available reviews; assumed adequate, unremarkable pedal feel and stopping performance typical of the class.
The 166-hp 2.4L four paired with a CVT is unhurried and flares in revs under hard throttle, with acceleration described as poor for the base engine.
The CVT allows the four-cylinder to drone at elevated RPM under acceleration, a common complaint in period reviews.
A tight 34.8-ft turning diameter is near the best end of the compact-SUV band, aiding low-speed maneuverability.
Reviewers note high-mounted front seats paired with a low-set steering wheel that some drivers find awkward, though visibility and control layout are otherwise unremarkable.
Soft suspension tuning, numb steering, and a lethargic CVT-four combination add up to an appliance-like driving experience with little to engage enthusiasts.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Outlander's weakest categories.1.10D
The 2020 refresh made Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning and automatic high-beams standard across every trim including base ES, plus a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto - solid for the price point, though rivals like the CR-V and RAV4 still edge it on cabin materials.
Edmunds rated the 2020 Outlander a below-average 6.6/10, concluding it gives buyers few reasons to choose it over other small SUVs and that stepping up to a midsize three-row rival is usually the better move at a similar price - low power and a coarse CVT undercut the content it does offer.
Six gas trims (ES, SE, LE, SEL, SP, GT) spanning FWD and S-AWC, plus a separate PHEV line on SEL/GT, give a reasonably wide spread from value-focused to loaded, though the jumps between adjacent trims are small.
US sales fell sharply to 27,132 units in 2020 from 37,965 in 2019, a small fraction of segment leaders like the RAV4 or CR-V that each sell 300,000+ annually.
Mitsubishi carries a budget, non-aspirational image in the US market with a thin dealer network and a reputation trailing mainstream Japanese rivals, which drags on resale and cross-shopping consideration.
Mitsubishi leaned on aggressive incentives to move Outlander volume, including 0% APR for 60 months or up to $4,500 cash back plus loyalty/military bonuses - genuinely useful buyer leverage rather than desperation-only pricing.
The third generation launched for MY2014 and received its third facelift for MY2019 (new grille, bumpers, 18-in wheels), which 2020 carries over - a mid-cycle refresh on a six-year-old platform, not a clean-sheet redesign.
Edmunds' below-average 6.6/10 verdict is representative of contemporary reviews, which cited an underpowered engine, unrefined CVT and unremarkable driving dynamics; no major comparison-test wins or industry awards were found for the 2020 model year.
