The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.

The 2023 Pathfinder is a safe, family-friendly three-row SUV at a low price. It earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a 5-star NHTSA rating, it is one of the easiest vehicles in the class to use with car seats, and it tows 6,000 lbs when properly equipped, all from $36,295. The costs show up after you buy it. The V6 averages 23 MPG with no hybrid option, the warranty is the segment minimum, and it is projected to keep only about 46% of its value after five years. Cargo space with the third row in use is also tight at 16.6 cu ft.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Pathfinder's weakest categories.1.54D
Horsepower
284 hp (295 hp on the new Rock Creek with premium fuel)
34/100
#8 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2023 is the second model year of the fifth-generation R53 (launched for 2022); the 3.5L VQ35DD V6 carries over at 284 hp on regular fuel for S/SV/SL/Platinum. The volume SV is scored here. Rock Creek, new for 2023, is retuned to 295 hp on premium.

Torque
259 lb-ft (270 lb-ft on Rock Creek with premium)
35/100
#11 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The volume trim's naturally aspirated V6 makes 259 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm. That is mid-pack for a mid-size three-row and peakier than the turbocharged engines in the Explorer and Grand Cherokee.

0–60 mph time
6.7 s tested (6.6 s AWD SL; 6.7 s Rock Creek)
47/100
#4 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Instrumented tests of the R53 V6/9-speed powertrain return 6.6–6.7 s across FWD, AWD and Rock Creek models. That is about average for the segment.

Powertrain refinement76
#2 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The naturally aspirated V6 has linear throttle response with no turbo lag or hybrid handoffs, and it stays smooth under load. It gives up low-end punch to turbocharged rivals, which keeps it out of the top band.

Transmission behavior74
#3 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The ZF-sourced 9-speed automatic, which replaced the previous generation's Jatco CVT for the R53, shifts smoothly and does not hunt. Reviewers note that downshifts are sometimes a beat slow when left in Drive.

Max towing capacity
6,000 lbs properly equipped (3,500 lbs without the tow package)
71/100
#3 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The Pathfinder is rated at 6,000 lbs with the factory tow package: standard on Rock Creek and Platinum, and part of the Premium Package on SV/SL. Base configurations without the package are rated at 3,500 lbs.

AWD/4WD availability72
#6 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Nissan's Intelligent 4x4 with a seven-mode terrain selector is an option on every trim and standard on the new Rock Creek. Availability is broad and the modes are real, but there is no low range or locking differential.

Off-road capability52
#7 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The Rock Creek grade, new for 2023, is a real but modest off-road trim: raised clearance (7.7 in vs 7.1 in), off-road-tuned suspension, all-terrain tires and standard 4x4. Short approach/departure angles and the lack of low-range gearing keep it light-duty.

Powertrain lineup breadth20
#17 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

There is one engine: the 3.5L V6 is the only powertrain for 2023, with no hybrid, PHEV or turbo alternative (the Rock Creek's premium-fuel tune is the same engine). Highlander, Sorento and Santa Fe all offer electrified variants.

2Efficiency & RangeThe Pathfinder's lowest-graded category.0.99F
Combined fuel economy
23 MPG combined (FWD and 4WD SV; 22 SL/Platinum 4WD, 21 Rock Creek)
41/100
#6 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The carry-over 3.5L V6 and 9-speed return 23 MPG combined on the volume SV in either drive configuration. That is mid-pack to thirsty for a mid-size three-row and well behind hybrid rivals.

City fuel economy
20 MPG city FWD (21 on 4WD SV; 20 SL/Platinum 4WD and Rock Creek)
38/100
#7 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

20 MPG city for the FWD volume configuration (21 with 4WD). With no hybrid assist, stop-and-go economy is a clear weak point.

Highway fuel economy
27 MPG highway (FWD and 4WD SV; 25 SL/Platinum 4WD, 23 Rock Creek)
44/100
#6 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Highway is the Pathfinder's best showing because the 9-speed's tall top gears keep revs low at cruise. 27 MPG still trails hybrid and turbo-four entries.

Driving range
~426 mi (18.5 gal × 23 MPG combined); ~390 mi on Rock Creek
46/100
#9 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

An 18.5-gallon tank at 23 MPG combined gives roughly 426 miles between fills. This useful road-trip range comes from tank size rather than efficiency.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$2,800/yr (EPA; $2,950 SL/Platinum 4WD, $3,800 Rock Creek on premium)
33/100
#8 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

EPA estimates $2,800 a year for FWD and 4WD SV models under standard assumptions. That is one of the larger running-cost figures in the mid-size class and several hundred dollars above hybrid three-rows.

Fuel requirements85
#11 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The volume S/SV/SL/Platinum trims run on regular 87-octane. Only the new Rock Creek's 295 hp tune is rated on premium, which EPA reflects in its $3,800 cost figure. That trim-level premium requirement costs a few points against a fully regular-fuel lineup.

3SafetyThe Pathfinder's best-graded category.3.41B+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4 frontal, 5 side, 4 rollover)
100/100
#1 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA rates the 2023 Pathfinder 5 stars overall, with 4-star frontal, 5-star side and 4-star rollover (15.5% rollover risk) results — the top overall result for the class.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness88
#2 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2023 Pathfinder earned IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ with Good ratings in every structural test — driver- and passenger-side small overlap, moderate overlap, side, roof strength and head restraints — a clean crashworthiness sheet for the second model year of the R53 generation.

Standard ADAS suite breadth82
#8 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on every 2023 grade — AEB with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, rear automatic braking and high-beam assist — plus Intelligent Forward Collision Warning. ProPILOT Assist (adaptive cruise with steering assist) is standard from SV up rather than on the base S, so the full suite isn't universal.

Automatic emergency braking performance90
#1 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the standard front crash prevention Superior in the vehicle-to-vehicle test (collisions avoided at 12 and 25 mph) and Superior for pedestrian detection both day and night — the top result in every AEB evaluation IIHS ran for 2023.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage72
#8 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are standard on every grade with Rear Automatic Braking behind them, and Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention is available on upper trims, but there is no safe-exit alert and no trailer-aware blind-spot extension despite the 6,000-lb tow rating.

Lane keeping & centering64
#10 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Lane-departure warning is standard and ProPILOT Assist adds lane centering from SV up, but reviewers of the R53 generation find the centering convincing only on straight, well-marked highway, with overcorrection and wander through curves.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist72
#8 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

ProPILOT Assist pairs full-speed-range Intelligent Cruise Control with stop-and-go and steering assist, and the Platinum adds Navi-link map-based speed adaptation, but it is the hands-on 1.0 system and is not standard on the base S.

Hands-free driving availability10
#6 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving is offered on any 2023 Pathfinder trim; ProPILOT Assist requires continuous hands-on steering-wheel contact, and Nissan's hands-off ProPILOT Assist 2.0 was confined to the Ariya/Rogue, not the Pathfinder.

Headlight performance64
#5 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

LED headlights with high-beam assist are standard, and IIHS rates them Acceptable — enough for the award, but short of the Good rating the best rivals post.

Outward visibility78
#4 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The upright, boxy fifth-generation body gives a commanding seating position with good forward and side sightlines and decent rearward views for a three-row; the Intelligent Around View Monitor is available on upper trims, but the 2023 lacks the front-wide and invisible-hood camera views added in the 2026 refresh.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability88
#1 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good for ease of use with full LATCH in three rear positions, and the LATCH AND GLIDE second row tips and slides forward with a child seat installed; wide doors open onto a tall, square opening.

4Space & ComfortOne of the Pathfinder's strongest categories.2.67C+
Seating capacity
8 seats (7 with second-row captain's chairs; std on Rock Creek, available SV/SL/Platinum)
100/100
#1 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The volume SV is an 8-seater with a second-row bench; captain's chairs drop capacity to 7 and are standard on the Rock Creek added for 2023.

Front headroom
42.3 in (41.1 in with panoramic moonroof)
100/100
#1 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Front headroom without the moonroof is at the top of the SUV band; the optional panoramic roof costs 1.2 in.

Front legroom
44.3 in
96/100
#1 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

44.3 in of front legroom is near the top of the mid-size three-row class.

Rear headroom
39.6 in second row (38.4 in with moonroof; 37.8 in third row)
90/100
#13 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Second-row headroom is generous for the class; the panoramic roof trims it to 38.4 in.

Rear legroom
35.5 in second row (sliding; third row 28.0 in)
46/100
#19 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Second-row legroom is the Pathfinder's weak dimension — several inches behind Telluride/Palisade/Highlander — though the row slides fore/aft to trade space with the third row.

Third-row usability58
#8 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A real third row with EZ FLEX tip-and-slide access that works even with a child seat installed, plus USB and cupholders, but 28.0 in of legroom and a low cushion make it kid-first; adults only for short trips.

Cargo/trunk volume
45.0 cu ft behind second row (16.6 behind third row)
36/100
#9 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

45.0 cu ft with the third row folded is modest for a mid-size three-row; 16.6 cu ft behind row three handles groceries but not a family's luggage.

Max cargo volume
80.5 cu ft (79.8 in load length)
57/100
#10 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

80.5 cu ft is competitive but not class-leading; the nearly 80-inch floor length is useful.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions66
#8 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Well-thought-out everyday storage — a bridge-style console with under-console bin, a shelf above the glovebox, a 54-liter lidded underfloor box and a removable second-row console on captain's-chair models — but no standout innovation; the 120V outlet is Platinum-only.

Seat comfort72
#6 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Zero Gravity front seats are a consistent review highlight for long-drive support and the second row (especially captain's chairs) is comfortable; the low third-row cushion holds it out of the 80s.

Ride quality64
#11 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The R53 rides with a firm, well-controlled tune — composed on the highway and better tied down than the floaty R52, but sharp impacts and broken pavement come through, especially on the Platinum's 20-inch wheels.

Cabin quietness66
#8 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Wind and road noise are well managed on road-tire trims and the V6 is quiet when cruising, but it is not library-quiet and the Rock Creek's all-terrain tires add hum.

Climate & comfort features72
#5 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Tri-zone automatic climate is standard on every trim, remote start and heated front seats arrive at SV, heated second-row seats and rear sunshades on SL/Platinum, and Platinum adds cooled front seats — a strong spread, though ventilation is top-trim only.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Pathfinder's weakest categories.1.41D
Base MSRP
$36,295 (S 2WD $35,000 + $1,295 destination at launch); 4WD adds $1,900
72/100
#6 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2023 Pathfinder opened at $35,000 before destination for the S 2WD, up about $1,700 on 2022 but still one of the lowest entry prices among mainstream three-row SUVs.

Volume-Trim Price
~$40,300 as typically equipped (SV $39,115 2WD / $41,015 4WD, incl. destination)
68/100
#5 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

SV is the volume trim, adding heated front seats, power driver seat, 9-in touchscreen option and ProPilot Assist; the figure blends the 2WD/4WD mix.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$4,200 over 5 years (maintenance + out-of-warranty repair)
82/100
#4 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

CarEdge puts Pathfinder maintenance and repairs at about $2,619 over the first five years; allowing for tires, brakes and post-3/36 repairs puts a realistic figure near $4,200, typical for a naturally aspirated V6 three-row.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~46% of MSRP retained at 5 years (estimates 40–48%)
20/100
#12 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A 2023 Pathfinder has held about 63% over its first three years, which projects to roughly 46% at five — below the midsize-SUV average and well behind Toyota/Honda/Kia rivals.

Basic warranty
3 years / 36,000 miles
0/100
#7 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Nissan's bumper-to-bumper term is the mainstream minimum, matching Toyota, Honda and Ford but short of Hyundai/Kia's five years.

Powertrain warranty
5 years / 60,000 miles
0/100
#5 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Five years/60,000 miles on the 3.5L V6 and 9-speed is the segment floor, half of Hyundai/Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile coverage.

Complimentary maintenance & perks50
#12 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Nissan includes 3-year/36,000-mile roadside assistance and a NissanConnect Services trial but no complimentary scheduled maintenance, trailing ToyotaCare on the Highlander — bottom of the roadside-only band.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$25,962 (≈$21,762 depreciation + $4,200 maintenance)
62/100
#8 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

$40,300 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (46% retained, or about $18,538) leaves about $21,762 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $25,962 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.56C+
Predicted reliability60
#13 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The two main sources disagree. Consumer Reports rated the 2023 Pathfinder below average, a prediction weighed down partly by data from the previous CVT generation. J.D. Power put its quality and reliability at 78/100, which it calls Average. That mixed signal lands in the middle band, a little under the segment median.

Brand reliability track record66
#10 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Around the 2023 model year Nissan was a mid-pack brand. It was about 12th of 22 in Consumer Reports' brand rankings and one of the most improved brands in the 2023 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study. Its later climb to 6th in CR's 2026 ranking came after this model year, so it counts for only part of the score.

Recall & TSB history64
#3 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2023 model year itself has one NHTSA campaign: a driver's power-seat frame weld that can detach, which is safety-relevant. Across the R53 generation there is a repeated pattern of weld and fastener recalls: 2022 seat-back and hood-latch welds and a missing seat-track bolt, plus a 2024 airbag inflator and a missing pretensioner rivet. None of these are powertrain recalls, so the score is typical-to-slightly-worse rather than low.

Powertrain durability reputation70
#7 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The engine is the carry-over 284 hp VQ35DD 3.5L V6, a long-running VQ-family engine whose main known long-term issue is the usual direct-injection carbon buildup. It is paired with the ZF 9-speed automatic that replaced the troubled Jatco CVT for the R53 generation. In 2023 the ZF pairing was only in its second year in the Pathfinder, and early complaints were about shift calibration rather than hardware failures, so it sits in the upper part of the no-red-flags band.

Interior material quality66
#6 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The redesigned cabin has soft-touch dash and door surfaces and a clean layout that suit its roughly $36k–$50k price. Platinum adds quilted semi-aniline leather. Lower trims use a smaller 8-inch screen and more hard plastic than the Telluride and Palisade benchmarks, so it is competitive rather than class-leading.

Fit & finish72
#6 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

J.D. Power's initial-quality and owner feedback for the 2022–23 redesign is favourable, and reviewers describe solid, rattle-free assembly. The repeated weld and fastener recalls in the generation, including this year's seat-frame weld, point to uneven assembly consistency and keep it out of the top band.

Dealer & service network83
#4 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

About 1,050 US Nissan dealers give near-universal nationwide coverage. Service satisfaction was a brand strength in this period: Nissan held the top spot in J.D. Power's Customer Service Index in consecutive studies through 2024.

Parts availability & repair cost75
#8 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

It is a high-volume nameplate with abundant OEM and aftermarket parts, and annual repair costs run slightly under the midsize-SUV average. Repairs are average in frequency but skew more severe than average when they happen.

7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.59D
Touchscreen size
8.0 in (S/SV/Rock Creek); 9.0 in on SL/Platinum
12/100
#11 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The volume SV carries the base 8-inch touchscreen; the 9-inch unit is limited to SL and Platinum — small for 2023 against 10–12-inch rival screens.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness62
#15 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The NissanConnect system is simple and reasonably quick with physical volume/tuning knobs and a separate climate panel, but the 8-inch screen and dated graphics trail Hyundai/Kia's systems.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto55
#14 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every trim, but wireless CarPlay is limited to SL and Platinum and Android Auto is wired-only on all grades.

Voice control & native navigation58
#7 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Native connected navigation with online POI search and traffic is standard on SL/Platinum, but the volume SV has none, and voice control is basic command recognition plus Siri/Google Assistant pass-through.

Audio system quality58
#18 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The volume trims get a plain 6-speaker system; the 13-speaker Bose is standard on Platinum and optional on SL, so decent sound requires a top-two trim.

Digital instrument cluster52
#11 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A 7-inch driver-information display between analog gauges is standard, but the 12.3-inch configurable digital cluster is exclusive to the Platinum.

OTA update capability42
#13 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

NissanConnect in the 2023 Pathfinder supports map/infotainment updates on navigation-equipped trims, but there is no evidence of whole-vehicle OTA updates adding features for this model year.

Companion app & remote functions55
#15 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The NissanConnect/MyNISSAN app offers remote start, lock/unlock, vehicle locator and alerts, but those functions require a paid subscription after the trial and there is no phone-as-key.

Charging ports & device power64
#9 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

USB-A and USB-C ports in the first and second rows are standard with third-row USB on SL/Platinum, but wireless charging is SL/Platinum only and the 120V outlet is Platinum-only.

Keyless & remote access64
#15 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Intelligent Key proximity entry with push-button start is standard, remote start and a power liftgate come on SV, and Platinum adds a motion-activated liftgate, but there is no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids66
#5 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Rear camera, rear sonar and Rear Automatic Braking are standard; the Intelligent Around View Monitor and front sonar come on Rock Creek, SL and Platinum, leaving the volume SV without surround view.

Head-up display availability55
#6 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A 10.8-inch head-up display is offered, but only on the range-topping Platinum.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.54C+
Kid & car-seat practicality86
#2 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

One of the class's best car-seat vehicles: the EZ FLEX second row tips and slides with a child seat installed for third-row access, LATCH is easy to use, and 8-seat capacity is standard on volume trims.

Family safety package84
#4 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and NHTSA 5-star overall, with Safety Shield 360 (AEB with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning, rear automatic braking) standard; ProPILOT Assist starts at SV.

Family road-trip comfort66
#10 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Tri-zone automatic climate is standard and first/second rows are roomy, but the kid-sized third row, 16.6 cu ft of cargo with all seats up, and sunshades/heated rear seats reserved for SL/Platinum limit it on full-load trips.

Daily driving ease70
#7 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The V6 with the 9-speed automatic (replacing the old CVT) is smooth in traffic and the steering is light enough for parking, but the firm ride and occasional slow kickdown are minor annoyances.

Commuting cost efficiency52
#4 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

21/27/23 MPG (FWD) on regular fuel is typical for a V6 three-row but trails hybrid Highlander/Sorento options; no electrified Pathfinder exists.

Parking & maneuverability56
#10 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

At 197.7 in long and 77.9 in wide with a 38.7-ft turning circle it is a big vehicle in town; good sightlines help, but the volume SV lacks the Around View Monitor and front sonar.

Work capability62
#3 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

6,000 lb of towing when properly equipped tops most unibody three-row rivals (usually 5,000), but without the tow package the rating is 3,500 lb, and it is a crossover, not a truck.

Durability for work duty58
#6 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 3.5L VQ V6 is long proven and the ZF 9-speed replaced the troublesome CVT, but it is a unibody family crossover whose 2022–2023 first years brought several recalls; it has no fleet/work reputation.

Jobsite & upfit practicality50
#3 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Four cargo tie-down hooks, a 12V cargo outlet on SL/Platinum, a lidded underfloor box and Yakima-compatible roof rails are basics; the only 120V outlet is Platinum-only and in the second row.

Long-distance comfort & range70
#8 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

About 425 miles per tank on regular fuel, supportive Zero Gravity seats and ProPILOT Assist from SV make it a solid interstate cruiser; the firm ride and modest cargo with all seats up hold it back.

Outdoor & adventure capability72
#3 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Intelligent 4WD with seven drive modes is available on all grades, and the new-for-2023 Rock Creek adds all-terrain tires, a 220-lb roof rack, off-road-tuned suspension and standard 6,000-lb towing — a genuine trailhead crossover, though without low range.

Gear & luggage flexibility70
#9 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

80.5 cu ft with both rows folded on a nearly 80-inch flat floor, a 54-liter underfloor box, roof rails and available hitch cover most gear; 16.6 cu ft with all rows up is the limit.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.33C+
Handling & agility66
#4 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The R53's firmer chassis keeps body roll in check and it feels smaller than its size on back roads, better than the Highlander or Pilot, though it is still a secure rather than engaging family hauler.

Steering feel64
#4 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The dual-pinion electric rack (16:1, 2.8 turns) is accurate and quick with reasonable weight, but it offers little road feel.

Braking confidence68
#4 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers report a firm, predictable pedal and competitive stops for a ~4,300–4,500-lb three-row; no fade complaints, but we found no year-specific instrumented test.

Powertrain smoothness & response66
#7 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The naturally aspirated 284-hp V6 is linear and lag-free, and the 9-speed is a big improvement on the old CVT, though it can hesitate before kicking down.

Drivetrain noise & vibration70
#3 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The V6 is muted when cruising and sounds smooth rather than coarse when revved; no vibration through the controls is reported.

Turning circle
38.7 ft curb-to-curb
41/100
#7 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A 38.7-ft turning circle is mid-to-weak for a mid-size three-row SUV.

Driving position & ergonomics72
#9 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A commanding driving position, a shift-by-wire console, and physical climate controls with real buttons and knobs make it easy to use; the volume SV lacks a power tilt/telescoping wheel and memory, which come on Platinum.

Fun-to-drive factor58
#7 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The smooth V6 and tidy handling give it more character than most three-rows, but it is competent rather than exciting; the Rock Creek adds some rugged charm.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Pathfinder's strongest categories.2.67C+
Standard equipment generosity72
#6 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The $35,000 S includes tri-zone automatic climate, Safety Shield 360 (AEB with pedestrian detection, rear AEB, blind-spot and lane-departure warning), LED headlights, 18-in alloys, an 8-in touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and eight-passenger seating — competitive content at a below-average price. Held back by cloth, manual seats and liftgate, and a small screen on the base car.

Feature value per dollar70
#5 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Undercuts Pilot, Highlander and Telluride at entry while offering a 284-hp V6 and a class-leading 6,000-lb tow rating; reviewers call it a solid, practical buy but note a less upscale cabin than Korean rivals and a thirsty powertrain with no hybrid option.

Trim & configuration breadth74
#8 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Five grades (S, SV, Rock Creek, SL, Platinum), each in 2WD or 4WD except the 4WD-only Rock Creek, spanning roughly $36k–$51k, with seven- or eight-seat layouts. The new Rock Creek adds an off-road-flavored option; the gap is a single V6 powertrain with no electrified choice.

Sales popularity & market acceptance68
#8 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Sales rose roughly 24% in calendar 2023 to about 62,000 units as supply recovered — a healthy upward trajectory — but volume remained well behind Explorer, Highlander, Telluride and Pilot.

Brand desirability & image55
#17 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Nissan is a functional badge in the segment, and weak Pathfinder residuals reflect it — about 63% retained after three years versus stronger Toyota, Honda and Kia three-rows. The heritage nameplate and body-on-frame-era reputation give it some pull with adventure buyers.

Deals & incentive availability70
#7 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Early in the 2023 model year dealers were still recovering from chip-shortage inventory and discounts were thin, but through 2023 Nissan brought back cash-back and low-APR offers on the Pathfinder as stock rebuilt, so buyers typically found modest-to-meaningful deals.

Model freshness84
#2 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2023 is the second model year of the all-new R53 generation, with a new platform, ZF 9-speed automatic and current driver-assist tech; the only change is the new Rock Creek trim, and no redesign was near.

Critical reception & awards62
#9 of 19 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers call it competent and practical but rarely the class pick — U.S. News ranks it 17th among affordable midsize SUVs and The Car Connection gives 6.7/10. Its honors are concentrated in safety (IIHS Top Safety Pick+) and regional awards, not comparison-test wins.
