The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The 2025 Pathfinder is a safe, roomy, reasonably priced three-row SUV that starts at $37,790. It pairs an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a 5-star NHTSA rating with a smooth 284-hp V6 and up to 6,000 lbs of towing. Where it falls short is the cost of keeping it: resale is weak, the warranty is the mainstream minimum, it returns just 23 MPG combined, and the volume SV's 8-inch screen already looked dated before the 2026 refresh replaced it. It suits families who want real safety and space for less money and plan to keep the car a long time, more than buyers who care about tech or resale value.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades below the middle of the scale.1.48D
2025 is a carry-over year for the R53 generation (launched MY2022; the facelift arrives for 2026). The 3.5L VQ35DD V6 makes 284 hp on regular fuel on S/SV/SL/Platinum; volume SV scored. Rock Creek is tuned to 295 hp on premium.
Peak torque of the volume SV's standard 3.5L V6 is 259 lb-ft — mid-pack for a mid-size three-row and peakier than the turbo engines in the Explorer, CX-90 and Grand Cherokee.
Same V6/9-speed powertrain as every R53 Pathfinder; instrumented tests of this generation return roughly 6.9–7.0 s for mainstream trims, ~7.5 s for the heavier all-terrain-tired Rock Creek. Carried from same-generation testing, not a 2025-specific run.
The naturally aspirated V6 is one of the Pathfinder's genuine strengths — linear throttle response with no turbo lag, no hybrid handoffs to manage, and a smooth, pleasant note under load. It gives up low-end punch to turbocharged rivals, which keeps it out of the top band.
The ZF-sourced 9-speed automatic (which replaced the problematic Jatco CVT with the R53 generation) shifts smoothly and never hunts, and paddle shifters sharpen response; reviewers still note downshifts that arrive a beat late when left in Drive.
6,000 lb rating with the factory tow package — standard on Rock Creek and Platinum, optional on SV and SL; 3,500 lbs without it. Matches the class's best non-body-on-frame ratings.
Intelligent 4x4 with a seven-mode terrain selector is optional on every trim and standard on Rock Creek — broad availability with real terrain modes and hill descent control, but no low range or locker.
The Rock Creek grade is a real if modest off-road trim — 7.7 in of clearance (vs 7.1 in elsewhere), off-road-tuned suspension, 265/60R18 all-terrain tires, hill descent control and standard AWD. Long wheelbase, shallow 18.8°/22.8° approach/departure angles and no low-range gearing keep it firmly light-duty next to a 4Runner or Wrangler.
One engine, take it or leave it: the 3.5L V6 is the only 2025 powertrain (Rock Creek differs only in tune), with no hybrid, PHEV or turbo alternative while Highlander, Grand Highlander, Sorento, Santa Fe and CX-90 offer electrified options.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Pathfinder's lowest-graded category.0.99F
2025 is a carry-over year: the 284 hp 3.5L V6 and 9-speed return 23 MPG combined on the volume SV in either drivetrain — mid-pack-to-thirsty for a mid-size three-row and well behind hybrid rivals.
The volume SV 4WD rates 21 MPG city (the FWD version, oddly, 20); with no hybrid assist and ~4,400 lb curb weight, stop-and-go economy is a clear weak point.
Highway is the Pathfinder's best showing — for 2025 both FWD and 4WD SV/SL rate 27 MPG — but it still trails hybrid and turbo-four entries.
The 18.5-gallon tank at 23 MPG combined gives roughly 425 miles between fills — a useful road-trip range that comes from tank size rather than efficiency.
EPA estimates $2,800 a year for the volume SV at 15,000 miles — one of the larger running-cost penalties among mid-size three-rows.
Regular 87-octane is all the volume S/SV/SL/Platinum trims need; only the Rock Creek's 295 hp tune is EPA-rated on premium, which trims this slightly from the top of the band.
3SafetyThe Pathfinder's best-graded category.3.37B+
NHTSA rates the 2025 Pathfinder 5 stars overall, with 5-star side and 4-star frontal and rollover results (15.5% rollover risk) — the same scores this R53 generation has carried since 2022.
The 2025 Pathfinder earned the 2025 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ under the tougher 2025 criteria, with Good ratings in small overlap, the updated moderate overlap (rear-occupant) test and the updated side test.
Nissan Safety Shield 360 is standard on every 2025 grade — AEB with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, rear automatic braking and high-beam assist — plus Intelligent Forward Collision Warning. ProPILOT Assist (adaptive cruise with steering assist) starts at the SV rather than the base S in the US.
IIHS rates the standard pedestrian front crash prevention Good — the level required for the 2025 TSP+ — covering day and night pedestrian scenarios; vehicle-to-vehicle AEB is standard on all grades.
Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are standard on every grade with Rear Automatic Braking behind them, but coverage is alert-based — no safe-exit alert and no trailer-aware blind-spot extension despite the 6,000-lb tow rating.
Lane-departure warning is standard and ProPILOT Assist adds lane centering from SV up, but reviewers find the centering convincing only on straight, clearly marked highway, overcorrecting through curves.
ProPILOT Assist pairs Intelligent Cruise Control with stop-and-go and steering assist; SL and Platinum add Navi-link speed adaptation for curves and junctions. Competent, but the base S goes without it and the system is the hands-on generation.
No hands-free highway driving at any 2025 trim; ProPILOT Assist requires hands on the wheel, and Nissan's hands-off ProPILOT Assist 2.0 is not offered on the Pathfinder.
LED reflector headlights with high-beam assist are standard on every trim and rate Acceptable across the range — enough for the TSP+, but not Good on any trim.
The upright, boxy R53 body gives a commanding seat with good forward and side sightlines and decent rearward views for a three-row; the Intelligent Around View Monitor is available on upper trims, though the base S makes do with a rearview camera only.
IIHS rates LATCH Good with extra positions, and the LATCH AND GLIDE second row tips and slides for third-row access with a child seat still installed; the standard 8-seat bench and wide rear doors make multiple seats easy.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Pathfinder's strongest categories.2.64C+
The S/SV/SL/Platinum come standard with eight seats; captain's chairs cut that to seven.
Front headroom is generous for the class.
Plenty of front legroom.
Second-row headroom is good, and third-row headroom is decent too.
The sliding second row's published legroom is only middling for a three-row SUV, since it is set to share space with the third row.
The 28.0 in of third-row legroom suits kids. Adults fit only if the second row slides forward. EZ Flex tip-and-slide access works even with a child seat installed.
Space behind the second row is about average for a mid-size three-row SUV.
Maximum cargo space is competitive, if not class-leading.
Clever everyday storage: a large lidded box under the cargo floor, a bridge-style console with open storage beneath it, and 12 cupholders on SV and up. There's no standout feature such as onboard AC power, except a single outlet on the Platinum.
The Zero Gravity front seats are widely praised as supportive. The volume SV has cloth seats with a 10-way power driver's seat. The third row is flat and low.
The ride is steady and well controlled but firm over broken pavement. The SV's 18-inch tires soften it somewhat compared with the 20-inch Platinum.
Reviewers find the cabin quiet at highway speed. The Rock Creek's all-terrain tires add noise.
Tri-zone automatic climate control is standard on every trim. Heated front seats and remote start arrive at SV. Ventilated front seats are Platinum-only, and heated second-row seats are limited to the Platinum and the SL Premium package.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Pathfinder's weakest categories.1.27D
The 2025 S 2WD opened at $36,400 plus $1,390 destination once Nissan trimmed $670 off it on April 1, 2025, one of the lowest entry prices among mainstream three-row SUVs.
The SV is the volume trim. It adds the power liftgate, heated front seats and a larger 9-in screen over the S, and ~$41,800 reflects the usual mix of 2WD and 4WD sales at the post-cut price.
CarEdge puts scheduled maintenance for the R53 at about $524 a year (~$2,620 over five years). Adding wear items and repairs after the 3/36 basic warranty ends gives roughly $4,300, which is ordinary for a naturally aspirated V6 three-row.
The Pathfinder loses value faster than the midsize-SUV average, and the April 2025 price cut plus steady incentives weigh further on used values. Weak resale is the biggest ownership-cost penalty on this scorecard.
Nissan's bumper-to-bumper coverage is the mainstream minimum. It matches Toyota, Honda and Ford but falls well short of Hyundai/Kia's 5-year term.
Five years/60,000 miles on the 3.5L V6 and ZF 9-speed is the segment floor, half the 10-year/100,000-mile term Hyundai and Kia give their three-row rivals.
Nissan includes 3-year/36,000-mile roadside assistance and a NissanConnect services trial, but no free scheduled maintenance; prepaid maintenance costs extra. That trails ToyotaCare on the Highlander and puts it at the bottom of the roadside-only band.
$41,800 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (45% retained, or about $18,810) leaves about $22,990 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $27,290 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Pathfinder's strongest categories.2.73B-
The 2025 Pathfinder is a carry-over year of the fifth-generation R53, before the 2026 facelift. J.D. Power's 83/100 quality-and-reliability rating is a strong signal. Consumer Reports rates the generation about average, and RepairPal puts it in the lower half of midsize SUVs because repairs tend to be severe, so the overall picture is mixed-to-average.
When the 2025 model was on sale, Nissan was a mid-pack brand. It ranked 12th in the Consumer Reports 2025 brand reliability rankings, the lowest of the Japanese brands. The brand's recovery since then shows mainly in initial quality: it was the top mass-market brand in the J.D. Power 2025 IQS.
The 2025 model year has only one US recall, for a small batch of front brake calipers from a supplier. Earlier years of the R53 generation had repeated assembly-defect recalls (seat-frame welds, a missing seat-track bolt, hood-latch welds, an airbag inflator, a missing seat-belt pretensioner rivet). None of these hit the powertrain, but several are safety-critical, so the generation's record is typical-to-weak.
The 2025 uses the 284 hp VQ35DD 3.5L V6, a long-running VQ-family engine whose main long-term issue is typical direct-injection carbon buildup. It is paired with the ZF 9-speed automatic that replaced Nissan's troublesome CVT for this generation. Reported transmission issues are about shift calibration and are fixed with software updates, not hardware failures.
Reviewers describe the pre-facelift R53 cabin as solid and well designed, with soft-touch dash surfaces, and appropriate for its price. It still has the older 8- or 9-inch screens (the standard 12.3-inch unit and upgraded trim arrived with the 2026 facelift), and it falls short of the Telluride/Palisade benchmark.
Initial quality is the 2025 Pathfinder's strongest reliability result: it placed in the top three of its segment in the J.D. Power 2025 IQS, the same year Nissan ranked first among mass-market brands. The generation's run of weld and fastener recalls keeps it out of the top band.
About 1,050 US Nissan dealers give near-universal coverage, and service satisfaction is a brand strength: Nissan held the top spot in J.D. Power's Customer Service Index in 2024 for the second year running.
Running costs are below segment norms, and as a high-volume nameplate it has plentiful parts and strong aftermarket support. The downside is that Pathfinder repairs tend to be more severe than average when they happen.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Pathfinder's weakest categories.1.47D
The 2025 volume trim still has the 8-inch screen. The 12.3-inch unit didn't arrive until the 2026 refresh.
Simple and easy to learn, with plenty of physical buttons and knobs. The small 8-inch screen and dated graphics trail rivals from Kia, Hyundai and Toyota.
Wired CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Wireless CarPlay comes only on the SL and Platinum's 9-inch system, and Android Auto is wired on every 2025 trim.
Voice commands pass through to Siri or Google Assistant. Connected navigation is offered only on the SL and Platinum, so the volume SV relies on phone projection for maps.
The base system is a plain 6-speaker unit. The 13-speaker Bose system is optional on the SL and standard on the Platinum.
Most trims have analog gauges around a 7-inch driver display. The 12.3-inch digital cluster is Platinum-only.
NissanConnect can take limited over-the-air infotainment and map updates on the connected-navigation trims. There's no evidence of whole-vehicle updates that add features.
The NissanConnect Services app offers remote start, lock/unlock and vehicle finder on SV and up, but those features need a paid plan after the trial. There's no digital key.
USB-A and USB-C ports are standard in the first and second rows. Wireless charging and third-row USB come only on the SL and Platinum, and the 120-volt outlet is Platinum-only.
Proximity entry and push-button start are standard. The SV adds remote start and a power liftgate (the liftgate is new to SV for 2025). A hands-free liftgate is Platinum-only, and there's no phone-as-key.
A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are standard. The 360-degree Around View Monitor comes on Rock Creek and above, and front sensors on SL and above, so the volume SV lacks both.
A head-up display is offered only on the top Platinum trim.

LATCH AND GLIDE lets the second row tip and slide with a car seat installed, and there are LATCH lower anchors in the third row. The long rear doors make loading easy.
An IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with a 5-star NHTSA overall rating. Safety Shield 360 is standard, and the volume SV adds ProPILOT Assist.
Tri-zone climate and rear USB-C help. Luggage space with all eight seats in use is modest at 16.6 cu ft. Rear sunshades and heated rear seats are reserved for the upper trims.
The V6 and 9-speed are smooth and the driving position is high, but the ride is firm and this is a big vehicle in traffic.
An EPA 23 mpg combined on regular fuel is typical for a V6 three-row SUV but well short of hybrid rivals.
At 197.7 in long with a 38.7-ft turning circle, it's a large footprint. The volume SV has only a rearview camera and rear sensors, with no surround view.
Standard towing is 3,500 lb, or 6,000 lb with the tow package. That's strong for a unibody three-row. With 80.5 cu ft of cargo space, it handles light-to-moderate work.
The long-running VQ35 V6 is proven, but this is a family-oriented unibody SUV with no fleet or work pedigree. The ZF-sourced 9-speed has had a mixed record in this generation.
Work provisions are few: four cargo tie-down hooks, a Class III hitch with a 7-pin plug on the tow-equipped trims, and no onboard power beyond 12-volt outlets on most trims.
A quiet cabin, comfortable front seats and ProPILOT Assist make it good on the highway. Range is about 425 miles on the 18.5-gallon tank.
Intelligent 4WD with seven terrain modes is available, and the Rock Creek adds all-terrain tires, a lift and a roof rack. The volume SV has 7.1 in of ground clearance and an available 6,000-lb tow rating.
A flat-folding second row and a 60/40 third row, a large underfloor box, standard roof rails and an available hitch make it flexible for hauling gear.

Handling is responsive and secure. Quick steering and good body control make it feel smaller than it is.
The quick dual-pinion electric steering has natural weight but little feedback.
It stops in a competitive distance for a 4,500-lb three-row SUV, with large vented discs front and rear.
The naturally aspirated V6 responds without turbo lag, and the 9-speed generally shifts smoothly, though downshifts can hesitate. Idle stop/start is standard.
The V6 stays muted when cruising and sounds fine under load.
Nissan's published turning circle is average-to-wide for the class. Secondhand sources quoting 37.4 ft conflict with Nissan's own figure.
Physical climate and audio controls are easy to use, and the driving position is high with good sightlines. The volume SV has manual tilt/telescope rather than a power column.
Competent and pleasant, with a V6 that pulls smoothly, but it's a family appliance rather than an engaging drive.

The $37,790 S includes tri-zone automatic climate, proximity entry, LED headlights, 18-in alloys, eight seats and Safety Shield 360 at a price rivals don't match. For 2025 the S still has only an 8-in touchscreen (the 12.3-in unit arrived with the 2026 facelift), plus a manual liftgate, manual seats and cloth. The one 2025 content change was a standard power liftgate on the Rock Creek.
One of the cheapest mainstream three-rows, with a 284-hp V6 and a 6,000-lb tow rating on Rock Creek/Platinum, and Nissan cut every trim's price by $670–$1,170 in April 2025. Reviewers still rate the cabin and tech behind the class leaders, and there is no hybrid, so it lands at fair-to-good value rather than standout.
There are five well-spaced grades (S, SV, SL, Rock Creek, Platinum), all but the 4WD-only Rock Creek offered in 2WD or 4WD, covering roughly $37.8k–$52k with seven- or eight-seat layouts and a distinct off-road trim. The gap is powertrain choice: one 3.5L V6 across the range and no hybrid.
During the 2025 model year Pathfinder sales rose sharply: calendar 2025 volume was up about 25.6% to roughly 94,000, the R53's best year, with a record fourth quarter. Absolute volume still trails the Explorer, Highlander/Grand Highlander, Telluride and Pilot.
Nissan is a practical badge rather than an aspirational one in this segment, and 2025 brought news of the company's financial restructuring. Weak residuals confirm the image, though the Pathfinder's 84/100 predicted reliability and safety record limit the damage.
Incentives were steady but modest. Before April 2025 buyers got $1,500 customer cash or 2.9–4.9% APR; after the MSRP cut Nissan reduced support to up to $1,000 cash and 3.9–5.9% APR, largely cancelling the lower sticker. Bigger discounts came only with the model-year sell-down ahead of the 2026 facelift.
The 2025 is the fourth model year of the R53 generation (launched for 2022) and essentially a carry-over. A substantive facelift with a new dash and 12.3-in screens was unveiled in November 2025 for 2026, so a 2025 buyer gets the pre-refresh interior just before it was replaced.
Critics call it competent but rarely pick it over rivals. Edmunds' test team scored it 6.4/10 and U.S. News gives it a below-average critics' rating for the class. Its awards are safety-focused: a fourth straight IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for 2025.
