The verdict

A struggling mid-size truck, strong on reliability and held back by technology.

The 2018 Tacoma is the mid-size truck you buy to keep: Toyota's proven 3.5L V6, a strong brand reliability record and trail hardware like the TRD Off-Road's locking rear differential make it a durable adventure rig. That year it also became the only truck in its class with automatic emergency braking and radar cruise standard on every trim. What you give up is livability. The rear seat has just 32.6 inches of legroom, the low seat puts your legs out in front of you, the 6-speed automatic hunts for gears, and the 6.1-inch screen has no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Expect to pay more for one than for a comparable Colorado or Frontier.

What holds it back

  • Dated, bare-bones tech
  • Cramped rear seat

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Tacoma's weakest categories.0.42F
Horsepower
278 hp (3.5L V6, volume SR5/TRD Double Cab); 159 hp 2.7L I4 base
16/100
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The volume Double Cab trims run the 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 at 278 hp @ 6,000 rpm, unchanged since the 2016 third-generation launch; the base 2.7L four makes 159 hp. Competitive for a 2018 mid-size, but low against the truck band that includes full-size V8s.

Torque
265 lb-ft @ 4,600 rpm (3.5L V6); 180 lb-ft 2.7L I4
6/100
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

265 lb-ft arriving at a high 4,600 rpm is modest for a truck; the turbo-four and diesel Colorado rivals out-torque it at lower revs.

0–60 mph time
~7.6 s (V6 auto Double Cab 4x4); 7.3–8.1 s across published tests
22/100
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Instrumented tests of the V6 automatic 4x4 Double Cab cluster around 7.3–8.1 seconds; the I4 is substantially slower. Average for a mid-size truck of the era.

Powertrain refinement52
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The dual-cycle (Atkinson-capable) V6 is smooth and quiet at cruise but peaky — torque lives high in the rev range, so the truck feels soft off the line and must be wound out to make real progress, a frequent reviewer complaint.

Transmission behavior40
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The 6-speed automatic is tuned for economy, short-shifting into high gears and then hesitating or hunting on grades and when asked to downshift — one of the most criticized traits of this generation. A 6-speed manual is offered on V6 4x4 trims; the 5-speed manual was dropped for 2018.

Max towing capacity
6,800 lbs (V6 with Tow Package); ~3,500 lbs I4
40/100
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Properly equipped V6 Tacomas with the Tow Package are rated to 6,800 lbs, in line with the gas mid-size class of 2018 but well short of full-size trucks.

Max payload
1,620 lbs max (Access Cab 4x2); ~1,100–1,440 lbs for Double Cab V6
19/100
#7 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Maximum payload is 1,620 lbs in the lightest configuration; the volume Double Cab 4x4 is rated lower. Modest against the truck band.

Towing tech & aids50
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The V6 Tow Package adds a Class IV hitch, 7/4-pin connector, transmission and oil coolers and Trailer Sway Control, and a backup camera is standard, but there is no integrated trailer brake controller, trailer backup assist or trailer camera views.

AWD/4WD availability80
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Part-time 4WD with a two-speed transfer case and low range is available on every trim, and the TRD Off-Road/TRD Pro add a locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control. It is a part-time system without an automatic 4WD mode.

Off-road capability86
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

One of the most off-road-credible trucks of its era: the TRD Off-Road brings a locker, Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select, and the TRD Pro adds FOX shocks, a front skid plate and more lift — a dedicated off-road trim that rivals only the Colorado ZR2.

Powertrain lineup breadth42
#6 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Two gas engines (2.7L I4, 3.5L V6) with a 6-speed automatic or, on the V6, a 6-speed manual; no diesel, turbo, hybrid or electrified option in 2018 (the hybrid arrived only with the 2024 generation).

2Efficiency & RangeGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.87F
3SafetyGrades below the middle of the scale.1.38D
NHTSA overall rating
4 stars overall (4★ frontal, 5★ side, 4★ rollover)
50/100
#5 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The 2018 Tacoma (third generation, launched for 2016) earned a 4-star overall NHTSA rating, held back by 4-star frontal and rollover results.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness62
#3 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Good in driver small overlap, moderate overlap, original side, roof and head restraints, but only Acceptable passenger-side small overlap; Marginal headlights on every trim kept it from a Top Safety Pick, so no award.

Standard ADAS suite breadth62
#1 of 9 trucksCompare all →

2018 was the first Tacoma year with Toyota Safety Sense P standard on every trim: pre-collision with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, auto high beams and radar cruise. Blind-spot monitoring/RCTA remained optional or upper-trim only, and lane keeping is warning-only.

Automatic emergency braking performance72
#1 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Standard AEB earned IIHS Superior, avoiding collisions at both 12 and 25 mph; pedestrian detection is standard but was not evaluated at night in this era.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage45
#5 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert was standard only on Limited and bundled into packages on mid trims; absent on SR and most volume SR5 builds, alert-only with no braking and no trailer coverage.

Lane keeping & centering32
#4 of 9 trucksCompare all →

TSS-P on the Tacoma provides Lane Departure Alert with sway warning only — no steering assist or lane centering.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist45
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is standard but high-speed-range only (no stop-and-go), and there is no combined highway-assist function; reviewers found it serviceable.

Hands-free driving availability5
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

No hands-free or even hands-on lane-centering system was offered on the 2018 Tacoma.

Headlight performance28
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

IIHS rated the halogen projector headlights Marginal on all trims, with inadequate low-beam reach on straightaways and curves; auto high beams standard via TSS-P soften it slightly.

Outward visibility58
#5 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Upright cab and tall seating give a reasonable forward view, but the high hood and beltline limit close-in sightlines; a backup camera is standard, but no surround-view camera was offered for 2018.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability35
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

IIHS rated LATCH Marginal: full anchors in only two rear positions, and the Double Cab's upright, tight rear bench makes rear-facing seats a squeeze (Access Cab is worse).

4Space & ComfortOne of the Tacoma's weakest categories.0.48F
Seating capacity
5 seats (Double Cab); 4 seats Access Cab
75/100
#6 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The volume Double Cab seats five; the Access Cab with jump seats seats four. 2018 is a carry-over year of the 2016-launched third generation.

Front headroom
39.7 in
34/100
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

39.7 inches of front headroom is adequate but on the low side for a pickup; the low-mounted seat helps headroom at the cost of a legs-out posture.

Front legroom
42.9 in
47/100
#5 of 9 trucksCompare all →

42.9 inches of front legroom is mid-pack for the truck band.

Rear headroom
38.3 in (Double Cab)
10/100
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

38.3 inches of rear headroom in the Double Cab sits near the bottom of the truck band.

Rear legroom
32.6 in (Double Cab); 24.6 in Access Cab
0/100
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The Double Cab's 32.6 inches of rear legroom is cramped even by mid-size standards, with an upright seatback — the Tacoma's best-known packaging weakness.

Bed length
60.5 in (Double Cab short bed); 73.7 in long bed
15/100
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The volume Double Cab carries the 60.5-inch (5-ft) bed; a 73.7-inch bed is offered on Access Cab and Double Cab long-bed.

Bed volume
~39.7 cu ft (5-ft bed)
19/100
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The short bed's roughly 40 cu ft is small for the truck band; dimensions are 60.5 in long, 41.5 in between wheel wells, 19.1 in deep.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions60
#6 of 9 trucksCompare all →

A composite bed with an integrated deck-rail system and adjustable tie-down cleats, an available 120V/400W bed outlet and available Qi pad are useful; cabin storage is ordinary, with small under-seat bins in the Double Cab.

Seat comfort42
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The front seat is mounted low to the floor, producing a legs-out, knees-up posture that reviewers widely criticize; the rear seat is upright and short on legroom. Only the driver seat gets lumbar adjust.

Ride quality52
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Body-on-frame with leaf springs: the ride is acceptable on smooth roads but jiggly and busy over broken pavement when unladen, typical of the era's mid-size trucks.

Cabin quietness50
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Wind and road noise are noticeable at highway speeds, and the V6 is loud when worked hard because the transmission keeps revs up on grades.

Climate & comfort features50
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Dual-zone automatic climate and heated front seats exist but are limited to upper trims or packages (standard on Limited/TRD Pro); no ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, rear vents or remote start app.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Tacoma's strongest categories.2.73B-
Base MSRP
$26,195 (SR Access Cab 4x2 I4, $25,200 MSRP + $995 DPH)
98/100
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The 2018 SR Access Cab with the 2.7L four opened the range at a price that undercut most full-size trucks and sat level with the Colorado/Frontier entry trims.

Volume-Trim Price
~$35,000 (SR5 V6 Double Cab 4x4 as typically equipped, incl. DPH); TRD Off-Road Double Cab 4x4 ~$36,000–38,000
88/100
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The Tacoma's sales center was the V6 Double Cab 4x4 in SR5 or TRD Off-Road trim; a typically equipped SR5 V6 4x4 transacted in the mid-$30,000s.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$4,500 over 5 years (first 2 yr / 25,000 mi of scheduled service covered by ToyotaCare)
87/100
#3 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The 2GR V6 and simple body-on-frame hardware are cheap to service and parts are universal, keeping 5-year running costs low for the class; known issues (rear-axle seal leaks, transmission hunting) are mostly warranty or nuisance items.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~62% projected 5-year retention (KBB 2018 Best Resale Value, top of all vehicles)
48/100
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The Tacoma was KBB's overall #1 for resale in 2018; real-world retention ended up even higher after the 2021–22 used-truck price spike.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
0/100
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Industry-floor basic coverage, matched by Ford/GM/Nissan mid-size rivals.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain
0/100
#1 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Bottom-of-band powertrain coverage, the same as Chevrolet's Colorado and Nissan's Frontier in 2018.

Complimentary maintenance & perks78
#1 of 9 trucksCompare all →

ToyotaCare's two years of no-cost scheduled maintenance plus 24-hour roadside assistance is a genuine included-service plan that GM (one visit) and Nissan did not match on their 2018 mid-size trucks; short of the top band given its 2 yr / 25,000 mi length.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$17,800 (≈$13,300 depreciation + $4,500 maintenance)
83/100
#3 of 9 trucksCompare all →

$35,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (62% retained, or about $21,700) leaves about $13,300 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $17,800 in total.

6Reliability & QualityThe Tacoma's best-graded category.3.06B
Predicted reliability66
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Signals are mixed for the third year of the third generation: Consumer Reports gave the 2018 Tacoma its lowest (1/5) predicted-reliability rating at the time, driven by owner complaints about the 6-speed automatic's shift quality and the infotainment, yet J.D. Power rates it average (75/100) and later owner data shows no pattern of hard failures. It lands in the average band, below the Frontier, which topped J.D. Power's 2021 VDS midsize-pickup segment for the 2018 model year.

Brand reliability track record90
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

In the 2018 era Toyota ranked among the top few brands in both Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings (just behind Lexus) and J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study, a standing it has held for years. That's the strongest brand-level input available to any mid-size truck.

Recall & TSB history64
#1 of 9 trucksCompare all →

There are three NHTSA campaigns, and two are serious: a Tacoma-specific brake master cylinder machining defect, and the Denso low-pressure fuel pump that can stall the engine. The fuel pump was a supplier problem across Toyota's whole lineup, not something specific to the Tacoma. The generation also has a known TSB pattern of rear-axle seal oil leaks, driveshaft slip-yoke clunk and 6AT shift-logic reflashes. That's typical activity with a couple of safety-system items, but nothing systemic in the powertrain.

Powertrain durability reputation82
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The volume 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 belongs to Toyota's long-proven 2GR family, which is widely deployed with a strong high-mileage record, and the 2.7L 2TR-FE four is one of the most durable engines in the segment. Owner complaints about the 6-speed automatic are about drivability (gear hunting, delayed downshifts), not failures. Rear differential seal leaks are the main mechanical blemish.

Interior material quality55
#4 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The third-generation cabin is durable but plain, with hard plastics across the dash and doors, a small dated infotainment screen and a low-mounted seating position that reviewers often criticized. It is competitive with the Frontier but behind the Colorado/Canyon and Ridgeline on perceived quality for the price.

Fit & finish66
#6 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The San Antonio- and Baja California-built trucks are generally solidly assembled. Early third-generation builds drew scattered complaints about driveshaft clunk, interior rattles, wind noise and rear-axle seal leaks, which keeps this in the middle of the band.

Dealer & service network88
#1 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Toyota's roughly 1,200 US franchised dealers form one of the densest service networks of any brand, including the rural areas where Tacomas are used. Service satisfaction is at or above industry average.

Parts availability & repair cost90
#1 of 9 trucksCompare all →

As the long-running mid-size sales leader, the third-generation Tacoma has the deepest aftermarket in the segment, and OEM and third-party parts are abundant and cheap. Its naturally aspirated V6 and conventional automatic keep repair costs lower than turbocharged rivals.

7Technology & InfotainmentThe Tacoma's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Touchscreen size
6.1 in (SR/SR5); 7.0 in TRD Sport and up
0/100
#1 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The volume SR5 uses a 6.1-inch Entune Audio Plus touchscreen; TRD Sport, Off-Road, Pro and Limited get a 7-inch screen. Both are small even for 2018.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness40
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The Entune 2.0 interface is dated, slow to respond and has small graphics; physical volume/tune knobs help, but reviewers rank it behind Chevrolet MyLink and Ram Uconnect of the period.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto8
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto was offered on the 2018 Tacoma in any form; they arrived with the 2020 refresh.

Voice control & native navigation40
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Basic command-based voice recognition and Siri Eyes Free are standard; the SR5 uses phone-dependent Scout GPS Link, and integrated navigation with HD traffic is only on TRD/Limited trims.

Audio system quality48
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

A six-speaker base system is adequate; the JBL system (six speakers plus subwoofer) is reserved for the Limited.

Digital instrument cluster35
#7 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Analog gauges with a 4.2-inch color multi-information display between them; no configurable digital cluster.

OTA update capability8
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

No over-the-air software updates; Entune map and software updates require dealer service or USB.

Companion app & remote functions25
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Entune App Suite runs apps through a paired phone, but there is no remote start, remote lock or vehicle-status app for the 2018 Tacoma.

Charging ports & device power52
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

A single USB 2.0 media port plus 12V outlets is thin for the cabin, but Qi wireless charging and a 120V/400W bed outlet are available on upper trims.

Keyless & remote access40
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Smart key with push-button start is limited to upper trims/packages; the volume SR5 uses a traditional key, and there is no factory remote start or phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids45
#6 of 9 trucksCompare all →

A backup camera is standard on every trim, with front/rear parking sonar on upper trims, but no surround-view camera was offered until the 2020 refresh; the base camera resolution is low.

Head-up display availability5
#4 of 9 trucksCompare all →

No head-up display was offered on any 2018 Tacoma trim.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.92C-
Kid & car-seat practicality45
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The Double Cab's 32.6 inches of rear legroom and upright rear bench make rear-facing car seats a tight fit, and the open bed is a poor stroller space without a cover.

Family safety package62
#1 of 9 trucksCompare all →

For 2018, Toyota Safety Sense P (pre-collision with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, auto high beams, radar cruise) became standard on every trim — rare for a truck then — but blind-spot monitoring costs extra and crash ratings are middling (NHTSA 4-star overall).

Family road-trip comfort45
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Cramped rear seat, no rear vents, a busy unladen ride and noticeable cabin noise make long family trips tiring; luggage must ride in an exposed bed unless a tonneau is fitted.

Daily driving ease50
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Standard radar cruise helps on the highway, but the low legs-out seating position, hesitant 6-speed automatic and busy ride add fatigue in daily traffic.

Commuting cost efficiency42
#4 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The V6 4x4 returns about 18/22/20 MPG and the 4x2 around 19/24/21 — typical for a gas mid-size truck but costly for commuting next to cars or crossovers.

Parking & maneuverability55
#2 of 9 trucksCompare all →

A roughly 41-foot turning circle and mid-size footprint (212 in Double Cab short bed) are manageable in town, helped by a standard backup camera, though there is no surround view.

Work capability62
#7 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Up to 6,800 lbs of towing with the V6 Tow Package and ~1,100–1,620 lbs of payload suit light-to-moderate work, but the short 5-ft bed and peaky V6 limit heavier duty.

Durability for work duty85
#1 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The Tacoma's reputation for longevity and resale is among the strongest of any vehicle, with a rust-proof composite bed; early third-gen transmission complaints are drivability, not durability.

Jobsite & upfit practicality65
#6 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Deck-rail cleat system, composite bed, available 400W bed outlet and a huge aftermarket rack/upfit ecosystem; no tailgate step or multi-function tailgate.

Long-distance comfort & range50
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Standard radar cruise and a 21.1-gallon tank (~420 highway miles) help, but the awkward seating position, wind noise and gear-hunting automatic on grades limit long-haul comfort.

Outdoor & adventure capability88
#1 of 9 trucksCompare all →

A genuine adventure benchmark: part-time 4WD with low range on every trim, TRD Off-Road locker/Crawl Control/Multi-Terrain Select, the FOX-shocked TRD Pro, an available bed outlet and a vast overlanding aftermarket.

Gear & luggage flexibility62
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

An open bed with deck rails swallows bulky gear and a hitch is common, but the 5-ft bed is short and in-cabin space behind the rear seat is minimal.

9Driving ExperienceGrades below the middle of the scale.1.68D
Handling & agility50
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Secure but truck-like: noticeable body roll and a jittery rear axle over bumps, with less on-road composure than the Colorado/Canyon of the period.

Steering feel50
#8 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Hydraulically assisted steering is reasonably weighted but slow and vague on center, typical of a body-on-frame truck.

Braking confidence55
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Front discs and rear drums deliver adequate stopping, with 70–0 mph stops around 185–195 ft in instrumented tests; pedal feel is soft.

Powertrain smoothness & response45
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

The Atkinson-capable V6 is smooth but torque arrives high (4,600 rpm), and the economy-tuned 6-speed automatic short-shifts and hesitates to downshift, making the truck feel sluggish in real-world driving.

Drivetrain noise & vibration55
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

Quiet at a steady cruise, but the V6 becomes loud and buzzy when revved on grades or when passing, which it often must be.

About 40.6 feet curb to curb on the short-bed Double Cab — tight for the truck band; long-bed versions need roughly 44 feet.

Driving position & ergonomics40

The low-mounted seat creates a legs-out, knees-up posture, there is no telescoping adjustment on lower trims to compensate, and taller drivers struggle — the most common complaint about this generation. Controls are simple and well labeled.

Fun-to-drive factor62

Not engaging on pavement, but the available 6-speed manual and the trail-ready TRD Off-Road/Pro give it real character for off-road fans.

2018 was the year Toyota Safety Sense-P (automatic emergency braking, lane departure alert, auto high beams, adaptive cruise) became standard on every Tacoma — something no mid-size rival offered as standard — though the base SR still came with a weak 159-hp four, steel wheels and a basic 6.1-inch Entune unit without Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

Feature value per dollar60

Fair value overall: rock-solid resale and low running costs offset prices that ran higher than a comparably equipped Colorado or Frontier, along with a dated cabin, awkward seating position and a busy-shifting V6 that gave little extra capability for the money.

Trim & configuration breadth84

Six well-spaced grades from work-spec SR to TRD Pro, two cabs, two bed lengths, 4x2/4x4, I4/V6 and a 6-speed manual on TRD Sport/Off-Road/Pro gave one of the widest lineups in the segment.

Sales popularity & market acceptance96

Dominant segment leader in a record year, outselling the Colorado and Canyon combined.

Brand desirability & image86

Toyota's durability reputation and the Tacoma's loyal enthusiast following (TRD Pro, overlanding community) underpin a strong halo that shows directly in resale.

Deals & incentive availability38
#9 of 9 trucksCompare all →

With demand outstripping supply, the 2018 Tacoma typically sold near MSRP with small, infrequent incentives, especially on TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro, while Colorado and Frontier buyers routinely saw thousands off.

Model freshness66

Third model year of the third generation (launched for 2016), so current in styling and powertrain, but the platform carried over substantial second-generation architecture and the interior already felt dated.

Critical reception & awards56

Respected for off-road ability, durability and resale, and the winner of value-oriented awards, but reviewers consistently ranked it behind the Colorado and Ridgeline on ride, cabin comfort and driving position in comparison tests.
