The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The refreshed 2024 Atlas is one of the roomiest mainstream three-row SUVs you can buy. Adults fit in its third row, it holds 96.6 cu ft of cargo with the seats folded, and every trim comes with a full driver-assist suite and a 5-star NHTSA rating. The weak spots are ownership and the drivetrain. The only engine is a 269-hp turbo four, the 4Motion version returns 22 MPG combined, warranty coverage ends at 4 years/50,000 miles, and this launch year of the refresh carries below-average reliability and eight recalls. Buy it for the space, and plan around its costs.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Atlas's weakest categories.1.01D
2024 is the refresh year that made the Evo4 2.0L TSI (EA888) the only Atlas engine — the 276 hp VR6 was dropped — so 269 hp is both the volume-trim and the range-max figure.
273 lb-ft is up 15 lb-ft on the outgoing 2.0T and arrives low in the rev range, but it trails the V6 three-rows (Pilot, Telluride, Palisade) and the Explorer's turbo options on absolute output.
Instrumented tests of the 2024 2.0T 4Motion land at 7.3–7.5 s — quicker than the old VR6 Atlas but mid-pack-to-slow for a mainstream three-row; VW's own conservative estimates are 8.0 s FWD and 8.3 s AWD.
The new 2.0T has a broad low-rev torque plateau that suits family driving and outperforms the old VR6 on acceleration, but reviewers note some turbo lag off the line and a coarse, busy four-cylinder note when the heavy three-row body is worked hard.
The 8-speed torque-converter automatic (paired with the new shift-by-wire selector for 2024) shifts smoothly in relaxed driving, though kickdown for a passing gear can be hesitant.
Towing is unchanged at 5,000 lbs through the 2024 refresh — parity with the mainstream three-row benchmark set (Pilot, Telluride, Palisade, Highlander).
4Motion AWD is optional on SE/SE w/Tech/SEL and standard on the Peak Edition and SEL Premium R-Line trims, with drive modes including Snow and Off-Road — broad availability but conventional on-demand hardware, no low range or locking diff.
A pavement-oriented unibody family crossover with modest clearance, no low range, lockers or skid plates; the new-for-2024 Peak Edition adds all-terrain tires, rugged bumpers and an Off-Road mode but no lift or real hardware.
Single take-it-or-leave-it powertrain: the 269 hp 2.0T on every 2024 trim, with the VR6 dropped and no hybrid, PHEV or EV Atlas — a gap against rivals offering V6 or electrified alternatives.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Atlas's lowest-graded category.0.55F
The volume 4Motion configuration of the new 2.0T/8-speed rates 22 MPG combined — on par with the V6 Pilot and Telluride, short of hybrid three-rows.
City economy is the Atlas's weakest figure — a heavy three-row on a small turbo four returns 19 MPG in town with AWD.
The 8-speed automatic and turbo-four give the Atlas a respectable-for-class 26 MPG highway with AWD.
An 18.6-gallon tank at 22 MPG combined gives roughly 409 miles of AWD range — mid-pack for a mainstream three-row SUV.
EPA's current annual fuel-cost estimate for the volume 4Motion configuration is $3,050 on regular — in line with similarly rated three-rows on the same EPA basis (e.g. 2024 Buick Enclave 21 MPG at $2,950).
The 2024 Evo4 2.0T is rated at its full 269 hp / 273 lb-ft on regular fuel and EPA-rated on regular gasoline — no premium requirement, no plug-in or special-fuel needs.
3SafetyThe Atlas's best-graded category.3.21B+
The refreshed 2024 Atlas keeps the 5-star NHTSA overall rating of the first-generation (2018-onward) structure; the 2024 update was styling, interior and the switch to the 2.0T-only powertrain, not a structural redesign.
Earned a 2024 Top Safety Pick (not TSP+) with Good small-overlap (driver and passenger), Good original moderate overlap and Good updated side, but only Marginal in the updated moderate overlap test that measures rear-seat occupant protection — the result that kept it from TSP+.
With the 2024 refresh, IQ.DRIVE became standard on every Atlas trim from the base SE, covering AEB with pedestrian detection, stop-and-go adaptive cruise with lane centering, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert — nothing core is locked behind upper trims.
IIHS rates the 2024 Atlas's pedestrian front crash prevention only Acceptable, and it has no separately published vehicle-to-vehicle result under the updated test — adequate but short of the Advanced/Superior tier.
Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every 2024 trim with braking intervention for rear cross traffic, but there is no trailer-aware blind-spot coverage despite the 5,000-lb tow rating, keeping it just below the top band.
Travel Assist centers competently on straight highways, but reviewers note wander on curves and frequent hands-on prompts from the capacitive wheel — functional rather than trusted.
Standard full-speed-range adaptive cruise with stop-and-go, combined with lane centering in a single Travel Assist mode, but reviewers report occasionally abrupt braking in traffic.
No hands-free highway driving system is offered on the 2024 Atlas or any US Volkswagen; Travel Assist is hands-on, enforced by capacitive steering-wheel sensing.
IIHS rates both headlight variants Good — the SE/SE w/ Technology LED projector setup and the curve-adaptive LED units on SEL trims — and automatic high beams are standard.
The boxy, upright greenhouse with large side glass and a low beltline gives the Atlas some of the best natural sightlines among three-row SUVs; a 360-degree Area View camera is reserved for upper trims.
The cabin is very car-seat friendly — wide rear doors, a roomy second row that tilts and slides forward for third-row access with a child seat installed — but IIHS rates LATCH hardware ease of use only Marginal, pulling it into the middle band.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Atlas's strongest categories.2.70B-
The 2024 refreshed Atlas is a three-row SUV with a 60/40 second-row bench standard (seven seats); second-row captain's chairs drop it to six on upper trims.
Per the prompt rule the no-sunroof figure is used; generous for the mid-size three-row class either way.
Front legroom is mid-pack for the class; the Atlas's space advantage is in rows two and three rather than the front.
Second-row headroom is among the tallest in the mid-size SUV class thanks to the boxy roofline.
Second-row legroom is roomy and adjustable via the sliding seat, which trades space with the third row.
The Atlas's third row is one of the few in the mainstream mid-size class adults can genuinely use, and the second row tilts and slides for access even with a child seat installed. Amenities back there are basic (cupholders, vents, USB-C).
With the third row folded, the Atlas offers class-leading cargo space for a mainstream mid-size SUV, and 20.6 cu ft remains with all seats up.
Nearly 97 cu ft of maximum cargo space is near the top of the segment, rivaling some full-size SUVs.
The 2024 redesign added a shift-by-wire selector that frees console space, and reviewers describe the cabin as full of cubbies, but there is no standout innovation and the cupholders grip cups so tightly they cause spills.
Seats are roomy and the upper trims add ventilation, but reviewers call the base SE seats too flat for long trips. Rear-row comfort benefits from generous space.
Reviewers generally find the ride soft and comfortable on the highway, but some reports note front-suspension chatter and crashing over broken pavement, railroad tracks and speed bumps.
Reviewers describe the cabin as quiet at cruise, with road noise well controlled. Wind noise at speed and the four-cylinder under hard acceleration are the main intrusions.
The comfort kit is unusually rich low in the lineup. Ventilated front seats come on the base SE; SE w/ Technology adds tri-zone climate, a heated wheel, rear sunshades and remote start; heated rear seats come higher up.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Atlas's weakest categories.1.08D
MY2024 is the refresh year for the 2018-launched generation: the VR6 is gone and every trim, the SE included, uses the 269-hp 2.0T. The SE's $37,725 base price is a sizeable jump over the outgoing 2023 four-cylinder SE.
SE with Technology is the volume trim and most are sold with 4Motion. It adds the power liftgate, proximity entry, remote start and wireless charging.
Edmunds projects above-class-average maintenance for the 2024 SE w/Technology AWD. KBB's projection is lower, at $3,069 maintenance plus $1,247 repairs. The Edmunds figure is used because it is trim-specific and consistent with VW's above-mainstream parts and labor pricing.
Residual projections disagree widely. KBB implies only ~38% retention, while Edmunds' $20,102 depreciation on a ~$45k SE w/Tech AWD implies ~55%. The midpoint matches the Atlas's record of below-segment-average resale, which is driven by heavy incentives and fleet volume.
VW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty is 4 yr/50,000 mi, which beats the 3/36 from Toyota, Honda, Ford and GM. It trails Hyundai and Kia's 5/60.
Powertrain coverage ends with the basic warranty at 4 yr/50,000 mi. That is the shortest in the mainstream three-row class, against rivals' 5/60 and Hyundai/Kia's 10/100. It is a real exposure for the new turbo four and its newly sourced 8-speed automatic.
VW Carefree Coverage includes 2 yr/20,000 mi of scheduled maintenance (the first two services), 3 yr/36,000 mi roadside assistance and a Car-Net trial. That is useful but short-capped, behind Hyundai/Kia's longer included-maintenance terms and level with ToyotaCare.
$44,915 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (46% retained, or about $20,661) leaves about $24,254 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,900 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $32,154 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.18D
2024 is the launch year of the Atlas's major mid-cycle refresh: a new sole engine (2.0T replacing the VR6), a new 8-speed automatic, shift-by-wire and an all-new 12.0-inch infotainment and 10.3-inch digital cluster. Consumer Reports rates the 2024 Atlas less reliable than the average 2024 vehicle, with owner complaints concentrated in in-car electronics. That puts it in the below-average band, under the segment median.
Volkswagen has sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study for several years running. Electronics and infotainment are the most-cited problem areas. That is a consistent pattern, not one bad year.
MY2024 is covered by eight NHTSA campaigns, which is heavy for one model year. They include two engine-related campaigns, one of them a fire risk; a front-passenger occupant-classification airbag recall; a brake master cylinder assembly defect; chassis bolt torque; and three separate rearview-camera software/display campaigns. The repeated camera fixes point to a systemic problem with the new infotainment platform, so this scores in the low band.
The 2.0L EA888 turbo-four is a very high-volume engine family, and its evo4 version addressed earlier oil-consumption and timing-chain-tensioner failures. In the Atlas, though, it is a first-year application hauling a roughly 4,500 lb three-row SUV through a newly adopted 8-speed automatic. The engine family also carries known water-pump/thermostat-housing and carbon-buildup service items, and the 2024 connecting-rod bearing recall is a launch-year red flag. Mid-to-low band.
The heavily revised 2024 interior brought a more upscale design, more soft-touch surfaces on the upper dash and door tops, and a freestanding 12-inch screen. Reviewers rated it a clear step up from the pre-refresh cabin and competitive for a mainstream three-row SUV. It stays below the top band because reviewers widely criticized the capacitive sliders and touch controls, and the lower cabin uses ordinary hard plastics.
Atlases built in Chattanooga show solid panel fit and no pattern of rattle complaints. Initial quality in the refresh's launch year was hurt by electronics glitches, including screen freezes and camera faults, and by assembly-line campaigns: improperly installed engine covers, a mis-assembled brake master cylinder and under-torqued chassis bolts. Those assembly campaigns are the deduction.
Volkswagen has roughly 600-650 US dealers, about half Toyota's count. Metro coverage is adequate, but there are gaps in rural markets, and service satisfaction is mid-pack. Mid band.
VW parts and out-of-warranty repairs cost more than Japanese and domestic mainstream equivalents, and some parts are dealer-sourced. The shared MQB/EA888 parts pool and a healthy aftermarket offset this. A 4-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty covers early ownership. Lower-middle band.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.30C+
The 2024 refresh made a 12-inch touchscreen standard across the Atlas lineup, replacing the earlier 8-inch/10-inch screens.
The large screen is let down by VW's MIB3 software. Reviewers criticize the unlit haptic sliders, touch controls that miss inputs, and buried submenus. Some reviewers find it improved over earlier VW applications, but it remains a weak point against Hyundai, Kia and Toyota.
Wireless App-Connect (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) is standard on every 2024 Atlas trim.
VW's natural-language voice control is standard, and native navigation is offered on upper trims. Most owners will default to wireless phone projection, given the clunky native interface.
The base system is an ordinary multi-speaker setup. For 2024, a Harman Kardon premium system replaces the old Fender unit, but it is reserved for the top SEL Premium R-Line trim.
A configurable digital cockpit of roughly 10.3 in is standard on every 2024 Atlas, and VW's Digital Cockpit remains one of the better mainstream clusters.
The MIB3 head unit supports limited over-the-air updates for connected services and maps. VW has not offered feature-adding whole-vehicle OTA updates on the Atlas, and major software fixes still go through the dealer.
The myVW/Car-Net app covers remote lock/unlock, vehicle status, location and remote start on equipped trims, but the remote-access features move to a paid subscription after the trial period and there is no phone-as-key.
Wireless charging and multiple USB-C ports spread across the rows are standard, which suits a three-row family vehicle. Household-outlet availability was not confirmed for 2024.
Keyless access and push-button start are widely fitted. The volume SE w/ Technology adds remote start and a hands-free Easy Open liftgate, but no phone-as-key is offered.
A rear camera is standard, and the volume SE w/ Technology adds front and rear parking sensors. The 360-degree Area View camera is reserved for the SEL Premium R-Line.
A head-up display is offered for 2024 but only on the top trims, not the SE/SE w/ Technology volume trims.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.33C+
The Atlas is a family-hauler benchmark. Tall, wide rear doors and a second row that tilts and slides for third-row access even with a child seat installed make daily kid logistics easy, and 20.6 cu ft behind the third row fits a stroller.
The full IQ.DRIVE suite is standard on every trim, including the base SE. The 2024 Atlas earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick and a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, though it scored Marginal in the updated moderate-overlap test, which covers rear passengers.
Roomy rows two and three, tri-zone climate and rear sunshades on the volume trim, USB-C in every row, and 20.6 cu ft behind the third row make it a strong family tourer. Flat base seats and the lack of rear entertainment hold it back.
Light steering, a smooth 8-speed and standard Travel Assist make it relaxing in traffic. Its sheer size and the fiddly touch controls add friction to daily use.
At 22 MPG combined on regular fuel, the 4Motion Atlas is average-to-thirsty for a gas three-row, behind the hybrid Highlander and Grand Highlander.
At about 200 in long, with a roughly 41 ft turning circle, it is a lot of vehicle in tight lots. Good outward visibility, parking sensors on the volume trim and an available 360-degree camera help.
A 5,000 lb tow rating with the factory package and a huge cargo bay handle light-to-moderate work, but the four-cylinder is a modest engine under heavy loads.
This is a family-oriented crossover on a unibody MQB platform. 2024 was the first year of the new 2.0T/8-speed pairing, which has no long-term track record, and VW reliability is middling.
It offers a hitch, cargo tie-downs and roof rails but few work-oriented provisions — no confirmed high-output household outlet and no upfit ecosystem.
A quiet, composed highway ride, standard Travel Assist and about 409 miles of range per tank make it a good tourer. Flat base seats and some wind noise limit endurance.
4Motion AWD, a 5,000 lb tow rating for campers and boats, and the 2024 Peak Edition (all-terrain tires, styling) make it capable on gravel and trailheads. It is not a real off-roader.
With 96.6 cu ft maximum and 55.5 cu ft behind row two, a flat-folding 50/50 third row, a sliding second row and roof rails, the Atlas swallows bulky gear better than almost any mainstream mid-size SUV.
9Driving ExperienceGrades below the middle of the scale.1.68D
Reviews split. Some praise composed, mild-understeer handling and good AWD traction for the class, while The Drive found it 'bloated and kinda sloppy' next to the Grand Highlander and CX-90. Overall it is secure but unremarkable.
The steering is consistently described as overly light and slow, with little feedback.
The pedal is soft on initial application, which is good for passenger comfort, then firms up for short, confident stops. No instrumented 70–0 figure was found for the 2024 model.
The new 2.0T's broad low-rev torque and well-judged 8-speed shifts suit family duty, but auto stop/start and the four-cylinder working hard at higher loads keep it short of polished.
It is quiet at cruise, but the four-cylinder becomes audible and coarse under hard acceleration, and Sport mode adds a synthetic engine note reviewers mocked as fake.
A 41 ft turning circle is on the large side for a mid-size SUV, consistent with its long wheelbase.
A commanding seating position with good outward visibility and a tidier console thanks to the new shift-by-wire selector. Haptic sliders and touch controls for climate and volume undermine the control layout.
It is a competent, appliance-like family hauler. Light steering and a synthetic Sport-mode soundtrack give enthusiasts little to enjoy, and rivals like the CX-90 are more engaging.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Atlas's strongest categories.2.52C+
The 2024 refresh made a 12.0-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro cluster, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, LED lighting, tri-zone climate and the IQ.DRIVE assist suite standard from the $37,725 SE. That is more standard driver-assist depth than a base Pilot or Explorer. Proximity entry, wireless charging, the 360 camera and premium audio remain trim-gated.
About $44.9k for a volume SE w/Technology 4Motion buys one of the roomiest cabins and third rows in the class, a 5,000-lb tow rating and broad standard ADAS. Against that sit below-average residuals, a 4 yr/50k powertrain warranty, above-average maintenance cost and no hybrid option. That leaves it fair value rather than a bargain.
There are six trims (SE, SE w/Technology, Peak Edition SE w/Technology, SEL, Peak Edition SEL and SEL Premium R-Line), spanning about $39k to $54k with FWD or 4Motion and bench or captain's chairs. Since 2024 one 2.0T engine powers the whole line, with no V6, hybrid or performance choice.
In 2024, the refresh year, US Atlas sales rose 24.1% to 75,516 units, about 114,000 with the Cross Sport, making it VW's US volume leader. That is a strong upward trajectory, though still behind the Explorer, Highlander, Telluride and Palisade in absolute volume.
Volkswagen is a neutral mainstream US badge with a modest European-design halo. That halo is offset by below-average CR/J.D. Power dependability standing, a dealer network about half the size of Toyota's, and soft resale.
VW was among the more incentive-active mainstream brands through 2024–25, with subvented APR, lease cash and dealer discounting common on high-inventory Atlas stock, and transaction prices well below sticker. Discounting was a little lighter early in the refresh launch.
2024 is the substantial mid-cycle refresh of the 2018-launched generation, bringing new front and rear styling, an all-new interior and infotainment, a new 2.0T powertrain and an 8-speed automatic. The platform underneath is in its seventh year, and the next-generation Atlas arrives for 2025–26.
Reviewers praised the refreshed interior, the huge cabin and adult-usable third row, and the standard tech. They criticized the strained, laggy 2.0T, capacitive touch controls and mediocre fuel economy. It earned a 2024 IIHS Top Safety Pick but not TSP+, and it typically finishes mid-pack behind the Telluride, Palisade and Pilot in comparisons, with no major awards.
