The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.

The 2025 Atlas is one of the roomiest mainstream three-row SUVs. Adults fit in its third row, it holds 96.6 cu ft of cargo with the seats folded, and every trim from the $39,625 SE up gets a full driver-assist suite and a 12-inch screen. The costs come with the only engine: a 269-hp turbo four that feels strained in a 4,500-lb SUV and returns just 21 MPG combined. Weak resale value (about 40% kept after five years), a 4-year/50,000-mile powertrain warranty and VW's middling reliability record make it a better choice for space-first families than for buyers focused on long-term cost.

Jump to scores

Strengths

  • Strong, broadly standard safety
  • A third row adults can actually use
  • Easy family logistics

What holds it back

  • Thirsty for a four-cylinder
  • Weak resale value and short powertrain coverage
  • One engine, and it works hard

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Atlas's weakest categories.0.99F
Horsepower
269 hp (2.0L turbo I-4, all trims)
30/100
#19 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2025 Atlas is a carry-over year of the 2024 refresh of the first-generation (2018-on) US Atlas, with one engine on every trim: the 2.0L turbo four at 269 hp. The VR6 was dropped with the 2024 refresh, so no trim offers more power.

Torque
273 lb-ft @ 1,600–4,400 rpm
39/100
#15 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

273 lb-ft arrives low in the rev range, so the Atlas pulls usefully in everyday driving. On absolute torque it still trails the V6 three-row rivals.

0–60 mph time
≈7.2–7.5 s (4Motion, instrumented); VW quotes 7.5 s
35/100
#19 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Instrumented tests of the refreshed 2.0T 4Motion Atlas fall between 7.2 and 7.5 s. That is adequate rather than quick for a three-row SUV weighing about 4,500 lb. The 2025 powertrain is identical to the tested 2024 and 2026 cars.

Powertrain refinement62
#15 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The turbo four is quiet at cruise and has a broad torque plateau. Reviewers note some lag off the line and a strained, buzzy sound when it works hard in a full three-row body, and they miss the smoothness of the old VR6.

Transmission behavior68
#12 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 8-speed torque-converter automatic shifts smoothly and quietly in family driving. It can be slow to kick down when you ask for a quick passing gear.

Max towing capacity
5,000 lbs (properly equipped, factory tow package)
57/100
#5 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 5,000-lb rating matches the mainstream three-row norm (Pilot, Telluride, Palisade, Highlander) and is well above crossovers rated at 3,500 lb.

AWD/4WD availability65
#20 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

4Motion AWD is optional on SE and SEL trims and standard on the Peak Edition and SEL Premium R-Line. A drive-mode selector includes Snow and Off-Road settings. There is no low range, locking differential or torque vectoring, so this is basic on-demand AWD that is widely available.

Off-road capability40
#13 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

This is a pavement-oriented unibody family crossover with about 8 in of ground clearance and no low range, lockers or skid plates. The Peak Edition adds off-road styling, all-terrain-leaning wheels and tires and an Off-Road drive mode, but no hardware.

Powertrain lineup breadth20
#19 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Every 2025 Atlas trim gets the same 269-hp 2.0T. There is no V6, hybrid, PHEV or EV, while rivals offer hybrid (Highlander/Grand Highlander) or V6 alternatives.

2Efficiency & RangeThe Atlas's lowest-graded category.0.19F
Combined fuel economy
21 MPG combined (SE w/ Technology 4Motion, volume trim); 22 MPG FWD; 20 MPG Peak Edition
29/100
#19 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The volume 4Motion Atlas is EPA-rated 21 MPG combined. That is typical for a gas three-row, similar to the V6 Pilot and Telluride, and well behind hybrid rivals.

City fuel economy
19 MPG city (SE 4Motion); 20 MPG FWD; 18 MPG SEL/Peak Edition
31/100
#17 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

City economy is the weakest figure: a heavy three-row on a small turbo four with no hybrid assist.

Highway fuel economy
26 MPG highway (SE 4Motion and FWD); 25 MPG SEL/Peak Edition
38/100
#16 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Thanks to the 8-speed's tall gearing, highway economy is respectable for the class at 26 MPG for the volume AWD trim.

Driving range
~391 mi (18.6 gal × 21 MPG combined, 4Motion); ~409 mi FWD
35/100
#18 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

An 18.6-gallon tank at 21 MPG combined gives about 391 miles: mid-pack for a gas three-row and far short of hybrid rivals that exceed 500 miles.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$3,200/yr (SE/SEL 4Motion); $3,050 FWD; $3,350 Peak Edition
17/100
#20 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

EPA's current estimate for the volume 4Motion Atlas is $3,200 a year on regular gas. Its modest fuel economy makes that a sizeable recurring cost compared with hybrid three-rows.

Fuel requirements72
#22 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The Atlas runs on regular 87-octane and EPA rates it on regular, but VW's owner's manual recommends premium to reach the rated 269 hp. That is optional rather than a required running cost, so it lands in the 'premium recommended, not required' band.

3SafetyThe Atlas's best-graded category.3.25B+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4-star frontal, 5-star side, 4-star rollover; FWD and AWD)
100/100
#1 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA rates the 2025 Atlas 5 stars overall in both FWD and AWD form, though the frontal crash and rollover sub-ratings are 4 stars.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness72
#14 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Under the stricter 2025 criteria the Atlas drops to Top Safety Pick (not TSP+) because the updated moderate overlap test, which weighs rear-passenger protection, rates only Marginal. Small overlap and updated side are Good, so it sits in the upper middle band rather than the award-with-all-Good tier.

Standard ADAS suite breadth88
#8 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Since the 2024 refresh, IQ.DRIVE is standard on every Atlas trim from the base SE up. That covers AEB with pedestrian monitoring, stop-and-go ACC with Travel Assist lane centering, blind-spot monitoring and rear traffic alert, with nothing core held back for higher trims.

Automatic emergency braking performance66
#19 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The standard Front Assist system earns an Acceptable rating, not Good, in IIHS's vehicle-to-pedestrian test. That is enough for the TSP award but trails the best rivals, so the item lands mid-band.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage78
#11 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every trim, and Rear Traffic Alert can brake automatically. However, the Atlas has no trailer-aware blind-spot coverage despite its 5,000-lb tow rating, so it falls just short of the top band.

Lane keeping & centering72
#8 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Travel Assist centers well on straight highways. Reviewers note some wander on curves and frequent hands-on prompts from the capacitive steering wheel, so it is functional but not best-in-class.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist76
#13 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Full-speed-range ACC with Stop & Go is standard and works together with lane centering as Travel Assist. Braking can be abrupt in dense traffic, which keeps it at the top of the middle band.

Hands-free driving availability10
#14 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

No 2025 Atlas trim offers hands-free highway driving. Travel Assist is a hands-on system that checks for the driver's hands through a capacitive steering wheel.

Headlight performance90
#2 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates both available headlight variants Good, so every trim has Good-rated lighting.

Outward visibility82
#2 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The Atlas has a boxy body, tall glass and a low beltline, which give it some of the best natural sightlines among three-row SUVs. A 360-degree camera is available on the top trim.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability70
#16 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The cabin suits car seats well: three full LATCH positions, two more tether-only seats, wide rear doors, and a second row that tilts forward for third-row access with a child seat still installed. IIHS still rates LATCH ease of use only Marginal, because the anchors are hard to use, so the score stays mid-band.

4Space & ComfortOne of the Atlas's strongest categories.2.81B-
Seating capacity
7 seats (6 with available second-row captain's chairs)
75/100
#10 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2025 Atlas is a three-row SUV with a second-row bench standard on the volume SE w/ Technology; captain's chairs drop it to six on upper trims. 2025 is a carry-over year of the 2024-refreshed first generation.

Front headroom
41.3 in (less with panoramic sunroof)
86/100
#5 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Generous front headroom for the class thanks to the Atlas's tall, boxy body; the no-sunroof figure is used per the item rule.

Front legroom
41.7 in
38/100
#12 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is mid-pack for a three-row SUV; the Atlas spends its length on rows two and three.

Rear headroom
40.4 in (second row); 38.3 in third row
100/100
#1 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Second-row headroom sits at the top of the mid-size SUV band, and even the third row offers 38.3 in.

Rear legroom
37.6 in (second row); 33.7 in third row
63/100
#24 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Second-row legroom is competitive rather than class-leading, but the 7.7-in second-row slide lets owners trade it against third-row space.

Third-row usability82
#2 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

With 33.7 in of legroom and 38.3 in of headroom the third row fits adults on real trips, ahead of most mainstream three-row rivals; access is eased by a second row that slides and tips forward even with a child seat installed.

Cargo/trunk volume
55.5 cu ft behind second row (20.6 cu ft behind third row)
55/100
#5 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Cargo behind the second row is well above the mid-size average, and 20.6 cu ft behind the raised third row handles a family's weekly load.

Max cargo volume
96.6 cu ft with both rear rows folded
92/100
#6 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

One of the largest maximum cargo holds among mainstream mid-size three-rows, with a long, square load floor.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions66
#14 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Competitive everyday storage — large door bins, a deep console with a now-standard 15W wireless pad, an underfloor cargo well and flat-folding rear rows — but nothing like a giga-console or onboard power outlet innovation.

Seat comfort71
#14 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Broad, supportive front seats and a reclining, sliding second row; 2025 adds four-way lumbar and front-seat massage on the SEL Premium R-Line. Some reviewers find cushions firm and short on thigh support.

Ride quality68
#16 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Composed on the highway, but the refreshed Atlas rides firmer than the pre-2024 car; larger wheels bring noticeable hard hits over rough pavement.

Cabin quietness68
#16 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Wind and road noise are reasonably suppressed at cruise, but the sole 2.0T four sounds strained and coarse when worked hard with a full load.

Climate & comfort features80
#7 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Rich comfort equipment for a mainstream three-row: three-zone Climatronic and heated front seats are standard, with ventilated fronts, heated wheel and remote start on the volume trims and front massage seats on the top trim.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Atlas's weakest categories.1.08D
Base MSRP
$39,625 (SE FWD, incl. $1,425 destination)
63/100
#10 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2025 is the second model year of the MY2024 facelift with the 2.0T as the only engine, and the SE remains the entry trim. Pricing sits mid-pack among mainstream three-row SUVs — above a Telluride LX, roughly level with Traverse and Explorer.

Volume-Trim Price
$45,630 (SE w/Technology 4Motion, incl. destination; range $39,625 SE FWD – $54,630 SEL Premium R-Line)
55/100
#9 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

SE with Technology is the volume Atlas trim, and most are sold with 4Motion AWD (+$1,900). As configured it lands in line with the volume trims of the Palisade, Pilot and Traverse.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$4,850 over 5 years ($3,643 maintenance + $1,206 repairs)
72/100
#10 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

KBB's 2025 projection runs below the roughly $5,000–7,000 typical for the class. Part of the reason is that VW Carefree Coverage pays for the first two scheduled services and the 4/50 warranty absorbs early repairs. Once those run out, VW parts and labor price above mainstream Japanese rivals.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~40% of MSRP retained after 5 years
0/100
#21 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Depreciation is the Atlas's biggest ownership weakness. KBB projects about $23,800 of a $39,625 SE gone after five years. Heavy incentives and fleet volume keep used values below Toyota, Honda, Kia and Hyundai three-rows.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#7 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

VW's 4 yr / 50,000 mi New Vehicle Limited Warranty beats the 3/36 offered by Toyota, Honda, Ford and GM. It falls short of Hyundai and Kia's 5/60.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (powertrain covered within the basic warranty; no longer separate term)
0/100
#9 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

VW has no separate, longer powertrain warranty. The engine and transmission are covered only for the same 4 yr / 50,000 mi as everything else, which is the shortest powertrain term in the mainstream three-row class (Toyota, Honda, Ford and GM offer 5/60; Hyundai and Kia offer 10/100).

Complimentary maintenance & perks68
#4 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

VW Carefree Coverage pays for the first two scheduled services (2 yr / 20,000 mi) and adds 3 years of 24/7 roadside assistance plus a Car-Net trial. That is a real benefit, but shorter than Hyundai's 3 yr / 36,000 mi. It is on a par with ToyotaCare and better than the roadside-only Honda and GM programs.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$32,227 (≈$27,378 depreciation + $4,849 maintenance)
46/100
#18 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

$45,630 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (40% retained, or about $18,252) leaves about $27,378 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,849 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $32,227 in total.

6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.46D
Predicted reliability52
#15 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2025 is the second model year of the MY2024 refresh (2.0T-only, new 8-speed automatic, new 12-inch infotainment). The 2025 is a carry-over year with running fixes, and Consumer Reports' prediction for it has improved from the 2024's below-average rating. Other CR coverage still cites subpar Atlas reliability, though, and owner complaints about electronics persist, so the signals are mixed. Lower end of the average band, below the segment median.

Brand reliability track record40
#22 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Volkswagen has sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study for several years running. Electronics and infotainment are the most-cited problem areas, and the pattern holds across multiple years.

Recall & TSB history42
#20 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Five NHTSA campaigns cover MY2025, which is heavy for one model year. They include a transmission defect that can cause loss of drive power, an engine-cover fire risk, chassis/brake/suspension bolt torque, and two more rearview-camera software/display campaigns. Repeated camera fixes on the new infotainment platform point to a systemic problem. The volume is somewhat lighter than 2024's and none of the campaigns is a park-outside order, so 2025 scores slightly above 2024 but stays in the low band.

Powertrain durability reputation55
#15 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 269 hp 2.0L EA888 evo4 turbo-four is a very high-volume engine family, and evo4 addressed earlier oil-consumption and timing-chain-tensioner failures. In the Atlas it is in its second year hauling a roughly 4,500 lb three-row SUV through a newly adopted 8-speed automatic. The family also carries known water-pump/thermostat-housing and carbon-buildup service items, and a small 2025 transmission manufacturing recall is a minor red flag. Mid band.

Interior material quality73
#10 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2024-refresh cabin carries over unchanged for 2025: an upscale design with soft-touch upper dash and door tops and a freestanding 12-inch screen, competitive for a mainstream three-row SUV. Unlit capacitive climate and volume sliders and hard lower-cabin plastics keep it out of the top band.

Fit & finish63
#15 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Atlases built in Chattanooga show solid panel fit and no pattern of rattle complaints. MY2025 still draws assembly-line campaigns (under-torqued chassis bolts, mis-manufactured transmissions) and electronics glitches, which hold initial quality back.

Dealer & service network55
#23 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Volkswagen has roughly 600-650 US dealers, about half Toyota's count. Metro coverage is adequate, but there are rural gaps, and service satisfaction is mid-pack. Mid band.

Parts availability & repair cost50
#22 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

VW parts and out-of-warranty repairs cost more than Japanese and domestic equivalents. The shared MQB/EA888 parts pool and a healthy aftermarket offset this, and a 4-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty covers early ownership. Lower-middle band.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Atlas's strongest categories.2.60C+
Touchscreen size
12.0 in (standard on every trim)
59/100
#15 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A 12-inch center touchscreen has been standard across the Atlas range since the 2024 refresh and carries into 2025 unchanged.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness58
#23 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 12-inch MIB3 screen is crisp, but it boots slowly and the touch-capacitive climate/volume sliders and haptic wheel controls make simple adjustments frustrating.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto90
#10 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Wireless App-Connect (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) is standard on every 2025 trim.

Voice control & native navigation58
#18 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Voice control is standard and embedded navigation (with full-screen map in the Digital Cockpit Pro) is available, but VW's voice system is command-based and most owners default to phone projection.

Audio system quality70
#11 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Adequate base audio, with a Harman Kardon premium system with subwoofer and center speaker reserved for the top SEL Premium R-Line.

Digital instrument cluster82
#7 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A fully digital, configurable Digital Cockpit cluster is standard on every trim, with the Pro version's full-screen map view available.

OTA update capability55
#17 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The MIB3 system supports over-the-air infotainment and map updates, but VW does not offer whole-vehicle feature-adding OTA on the MQB Atlas.

Companion app & remote functions64
#14 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The myVW app covers remote lock/unlock, vehicle status and locate, and remote start where equipped, but Remote Access becomes a paid subscription after the trial and no phone-as-key is offered.

Charging ports & device power76
#9 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Six USB-C ports across the cabin and 15W wireless charging now standard on every trim; no household AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access74
#13 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

KESSY proximity entry with push-button start, remote start and a hands-free power liftgate come on the volume SE w/ Technology; phone-as-key is not offered.

Camera & parking aids68
#14 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Rear camera and Park Distance Control are widely fitted; Area View 360-degree camera and Park Assist are limited to the top SEL Premium R-Line.

Head-up display availability62
#6 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A head-up display showing speed, navigation and driver-assist warnings is available, but only on the SEL and SEL Premium R-Line — not the volume SE w/ Technology.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.58C+
Kid & car-seat practicality85
#3 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Wide rear doors, a second row that slides 7.7 in and tips forward with a child seat fitted, an adult-usable third row and 20.6 cu ft behind it make daily family logistics easy; IIHS's Marginal LATCH ease-of-use rating keeps it off the benchmark.

Family safety package84
#7 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA 5-star overall and an IIHS 2025 Top Safety Pick, with the full IQ.DRIVE suite standard on every trim; the Marginal updated moderate-overlap rating (rear-occupant protection) is the one blemish.

Family road-trip comfort82
#4 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Three-zone climate, roomy second and third rows, USB-C throughout and 20.6 cu ft of luggage space with all seats up suit long family trips; a firmer ride than before and no rear entertainment hold it back.

Daily driving ease72
#12 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Good visibility and standard stop-and-go adaptive cruise make it easy in traffic, but turbo lag off the line and fiddly touch controls add small daily annoyances.

Commuting cost efficiency44
#19 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

21 MPG combined in 4Motion form and roughly $3,200 a year in fuel put it at the thirsty end of mid-size three-rows, with no hybrid option.

Parking & maneuverability58
#6 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A 200.7-in-long body and ~40.5-ft turning circle make tight lots a chore; good sightlines and parking sensors help, but the 360 camera is top-trim only.

Work capability62
#3 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A 5,000-lb tow rating and a 96.6-cu-ft cargo hold handle light-to-moderate duty, but the 269-hp four-cylinder is stretched near the limit.

Durability for work duty45
#17 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A family crossover on a transverse MQB platform with VW's middling reliability record and leatherette/leather interiors — not a work tool with any fleet reputation.

Jobsite & upfit practicality50
#6 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Cargo tie-downs, roof rails, a factory tow hitch and a flat load floor, but no onboard AC power or work-oriented upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range74
#10 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Roomy, quiet-at-cruise and equipped with standard Travel Assist, but ~390 miles of range and a firmer ride than before keep it below the class's best tourers.

Outdoor & adventure capability58
#16 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

4Motion with Snow and Off-Road modes, 5,000-lb towing and a huge flat cargo bay handle gravel roads and camping gear, but ~8 in of clearance and no low range keep it pavement-biased; the Peak Edition is cosmetic.

Gear & luggage flexibility86
#2 of 25 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

96.6 cu ft max, 55.5 cu ft behind row two and flat-folding second and third rows make bulky gear easy; roof rails and a tow hitch are available.

Every 2025 Atlas, from the $39,625 SE up, comes with the full IQ.DRIVE assist suite (stop-and-go adaptive cruise, lane keeping, AEB with pedestrian detection, blind-spot and rear traffic alert), a 12-inch touchscreen, a 10.3-inch digital cluster and wireless smartphone integration. That is deeper standard content than a base Pilot, Explorer or Ascent. It misses the top band because the base price runs a couple of thousand above a Telluride LX, and proximity entry, the 360-degree camera and premium audio are still reserved for higher trims.

Feature value per dollar63

About $45,600 for an SE w/Technology 4Motion buys a large cabin with a usable third row, a broad safety suite and a 5,000-lb tow rating, so the sticker price is reasonable for the content. Ownership pulls it down: KBB projects only ~40% of value retained after five years, the 4/50 warranty covers the powertrain no longer than the rest of the car, fuel economy trails hybrid rivals, and the turbo four is unrefined.

Trim & configuration breadth66

There are five price points: SE, SE w/Technology, Peak Edition SE w/Technology, SEL and SEL Premium R-Line, running from $39,625 to $54,630. 4Motion AWD is optional on the lower trims, and buyers can choose a second-row bench or captain's chairs. Choice is narrow everywhere else: one 2.0T engine on every trim, no hybrid or V6 since the 2024 refresh, and a Peak Edition that is mostly a styling package.

The Atlas is one of VW's top three US sellers, with steady volume of about 71,000–73,000 a year, and the line passed 1 million US units. Among three-row SUVs that is mid-pack, well behind the Explorer (>200k) and the Telluride, Palisade and Pilot (100k-plus each).

Brand desirability & image58

In the US, Volkswagen reads as a neutral mainstream badge with some European driving-feel appeal. It lacks the trust Toyota and Honda carry in the family-SUV market. Below-average reliability standings, a dealer network roughly half the size of the Japanese brands', and weak resale value all hold the image back.

Deals & incentive availability76

The Atlas is a widely stocked, incentive-supported model from one of the most deal-heavy mainstream brands. Subvented APR, lease support and cash allowances are routine through VW Credit, and transaction prices sit below sticker. Part of that discount comes back later as weaker resale value.

Model freshness58

2025 is only the second year of the substantial MY2024 refresh, which brought new front and rear styling, a redesigned interior with the 12-inch screen, and the switch to the 2.0T. That keeps the car buyers see current. The platform underneath dates to 2018 (MY2025 is the generation's eighth year), there is no electrified option, and VW revealed the next-generation 2027 Atlas in April 2026, so a 2025 buyer faces near-term replacement.

Critical reception & awards62

Reviewers credit the Atlas's roomy, usable cabin and third row, its standard safety content and the improved interior quality. It is rarely the class pick, though: they consistently criticise the coarse, laggy 2.0T in a heavy SUV, mediocre fuel economy and the capacitive touch controls. Its IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK honors are its main recognition.
