Minivans compared: Odyssey, Sienna, Pacifica, Carnival
Four minivans, one rubric. How the class grades on comfort, safety, efficiency and ownership cost, the seating and cargo figures behind it, and which one the grades favor for what.
Four nameplates make up the entire American minivan market, and they are the four most useful shapes on the road. Because the class is so small the comparison is unusually clean: the same rubric, four vehicles built to do the same job, and real differences in how each does it. The minivan segment medians 64.4 points overall, a C+.

Comfort is the subject this class is built for, and it shows: minivans median 69.4 points on it against 57.1 for the whole fleet, because the space criteria are graded against the minivan band and every one of these fills it. Efficiency splits on powertrain — the class has gas, hybrid and plug-in entries, each graded in its own class, and the label beside the grade on each car page says which.

| 2026 Chrysler Pacifica | 7 standard (2nd-row captain's chairs); 8-passenger with 2nd-row bench available on select trims | 87.5 cu ft behind 2nd row (3rd-row Stow 'n Go folded); 32.3 cu ft behind 3rd row up | 140.5 cu ft (gas, both rows Stow 'n Go into floor); PHEV max ~100.4 cu ft (battery under 2nd row blocks Stow 'n Go) | 22 MPG combined (gas FWD Select); 20 MPG AWD; discontinued PHEV rated 30 MPG gas / 82 MPGe | 3,600 lbs (with Trailer-Tow Group) | $49,240 (Limited FWD, incl. destination; Pinnacle $57,540; PHEV Select ~$51,765) |
Cargo behind the third row is the figure that decides whether the whole family’s luggage goes with the whole family; maximum cargo is with every rear seat folded or removed, and the figures are not measured identically across manufacturers, which the criterion’s reasoning on each car page notes. Towing is a real difference in this class and a small one in score, since minivans are graded against the same towing band as SUVs.
The verdicts
2026 Toyota Sienna — 2.71B-
1st of 5 minivans in the 2026 class on overall GPA. Minivan; graded as a hybrid.
The 2026 Toyota Sienna is the minivan you buy with your calculator. Every version is a hybrid returning 36 MPG combined — roughly 60% better than the V6 Odyssey and Pacifica — with about 650 miles of range on a tank, the segment's best resale (~62% after five years), the lowest maintenance bill (~$4,000 over five years), and the only all-wheel drive available on every trim. The trade-offs are real: 245 hp is the least in the class and the four-cylinder drones loudly on merges and grades, the second-row seats don't fold flat or stow like a Pacifica's, and strong demand means you'll pay close to sticker. If you want a family hauler that quietly saves money for a decade, this is it; if you want a van that drives well or swallows plywood, it isn't.From the 2026 Toyota Sienna scorecard’s written assessment.
- Strength: Fuel economy no other minivan comes close to
- Strength: Cheapest minivan to keep — and to sell
- Weakness: The slowest, loudest powertrain in the class when you actually push it
- Weakness: The second row won't fold flat, stow, or come out
2026 Kia Carnival — 2.71B-
2nd of 5 minivans in the 2026 class on overall GPA. Minivan; graded as a gas vehicle.
The 2026 Kia Carnival is the most van you can get for the money. It starts around $39,200 — the cheapest way into the segment — and gives you the biggest cargo hold (40.2 cu ft behind a raised third row, 145.1 cu ft with the seats out), the nicest-looking cabin in the class, dual 12.3-inch screens standard, and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty nobody else comes near. The catch list is short but real: front-wheel drive only on every trim, 22 MPG combined from the volume V6 (the 33-MPG hybrid fixes that for about $3,000), the widest turning circle in the class at 39 feet, and Kia resale that still trails Toyota and Honda by a meaningful margin. Buy it for space, features and price; skip it if you need all-wheel drive or plan to sell it in five years. From the 2026 Kia Carnival scorecard’s written assessment.
- Strength: The biggest, most usable cargo hold in the segment
- Strength: Cheapest to buy, longest warranty in the class
- Weakness: No all-wheel drive at any price
- Weakness: The V6 drinks like it's still 2010
2026 Honda Odyssey — 2.54C+
3rd of 5 minivans in the 2026 class on overall GPA. Minivan; graded as a gas vehicle.
The 2026 Odyssey is still the most practical box in the minivan class and the most enjoyable one to drive, with 158 cu ft of maximum cargo space, a genuinely adult-sized third row, and the Magic Slide second row that makes three car seats across a non-event. The catch is that it is the only minivan left without any electrification: a 280-hp V6 returning 19 city / 28 highway (22 combined) costs about $2,700 a year in gas, roughly $1,000 more than a Sienna hybrid. It is also front-wheel drive only, misses the 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick on a Poor rear-passenger moderate-overlap result, and enters its eighth model year on the same platform. Buy it for the interior and the driving manners; skip it if fuel bills, all-wheel drive, or the newest safety credentials are what you are shopping on.From the 2026 Honda Odyssey scorecard’s written assessment.
- Strength: Cargo space no rival comes close to matching
- Strength: The best minivan in the class for kids and car seats
- Weakness: The thirstiest way to buy a minivan
- Weakness: No all-wheel drive at any price
2026 Chrysler Pacifica — 2.17C
4th of 5 minivans in the 2026 class on overall GPA. Minivan; graded as a gas vehicle; 6 model years scored (2021–2026).
The 2026 Chrysler Pacifica is still the most versatile minivan you can buy — dual Stow 'n Go seats fold flat into the floor for 140.5 cu ft of hauling space no rival can match, and it's the only minivan on sale with a plug-in hybrid option (though Chrysler is winding the PHEV down for 2026). But that shopping win comes with real tradeoffs: the volume gas V6 manages just 22 MPG combined, Chrysler's reliability record trails Toyota and Honda by a wide margin, and the platform is entering its ninth year with no redesign in sight. Best for family buyers who prize cargo flexibility and heavy discounts over long-term dependability and fuel economy. From the 2026 Chrysler Pacifica scorecard’s written assessment.
- Strength: Segment-benchmark cargo and interior flexibility
- Strength: Family-hauler practicality that's hard to beat
- Weakness: Thirsty gas V6 with no standard hybrid
- Weakness: Reliability record trails Toyota and Honda by a wide margin
