The verdict
A struggling compact luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The 2021 Acura RDX is a strong value play in the compact luxury SUV class: a 5-star NHTSA rating and IIHS Top Safety Pick+ come standard on every trim, and the SH-AWD system makes it one of the more genuinely fun-to-drive crossovers in the segment, all starting around $39,445 and topping out near $44,345 for the popular SH-AWD Technology trim. The tradeoffs are real, though — a 1,500 lb max tow rating, premium-fuel-only economy that runs about $3,350/yr, cargo space (29.5 cu ft behind the second row) at the back of the class, and a touchpad-only infotainment controller that takes real time to learn. It rewards buyers who prioritize handling, safety tech and price over outright hauling capacity or cutting-edge tech ergonomics.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Class-leading standard safety credentials
- Athletic handling backed by genuine SH-AWD
- Undercuts German rivals on price without giving up content
What holds it back
- Among the weakest tow ratings in the class
- Thirsty and expensive to fuel for the class
- Cramped cargo hold for a compact SUV

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the RDX's weakest categories.0.50F
One powertrain across the entire 2021 lineup — the 2.0L DOHC VTEC turbo I4 that launched the third generation for 2019, unchanged for 2021 (the facelift lands for 2022).
Peak torque is flat across a wide 1,600–4,500 rpm plateau, which is what gives the RDX its strong midrange response despite a relatively small displacement.
Car and Driver's instrumented test of a third-generation RDX A-Spec SH-AWD — the same powertrain, suspension tune and curb weight carried into 2021 unchanged — ran 6.6 s to 60 mph; Edmunds' own test of the period car came in slower, around 7.0 s.
The 2.0T pulls hard once boost arrives and the wide torque plateau makes it feel muscular in traffic, but reviewers consistently flag a beat of off-boost lag from a standstill and a coarse, thrashy note near redline compared with BMW's B48 or the inline-sixes in the segment.
The 10-speed automatic (standard with paddle shifters on every trim) is smooth in light-throttle cruising and holds gears sensibly in Sport, but reviews repeatedly cite gear hunting in Comfort/Normal and a lazy response to sudden kickdown requests.
Acura rates every 2021 RDX at 1,500 lbs regardless of drivetrain — enough for a small utility trailer or a pair of jet skis but at the bottom of the SUV normalization band, and well under the 3,500+ lbs several compact luxury rivals offer.
SH-AWD is a $2,000 option on every regular trim (Base, Technology, A-Spec, Advance) rather than standard — only the limited-run PMC Edition requires it. The system itself is genuinely sophisticated for a car-based crossover, sending up to 70% of torque rearward and 100% of that to either rear wheel, plus an IDS Snow mode, but FWD remains the base configuration until Acura drops it for 2024.
8.2 in of unladen ground clearance is respectable for the class and SH-AWD's Snow mode makes it credible on a snowy road, but there is no off-road trim, no skid plates, no locking differential and no terrain modes beyond Snow — this is a pavement crossover.
A single 2.0T gas engine and a single 10-speed automatic across the whole range, with only a FWD/SH-AWD drivetrain choice and no hybrid, PHEV or EV variant. Compact luxury rivals (Lexus NX gas/hybrid/PHEV, Volvo XC60 mild-hybrid/PHEV, Audi Q5 gas/PHEV) already offered an electrified option in 2021.
2Efficiency & RangeThe RDX's lowest-graded category.0.31F
The SH-AWD configuration — the representative trim given AWD's popularity on a luxury crossover — rates 23 MPG combined; the lighter FWD base car does 1 MPG better. Mid-pack for a gas compact luxury SUV.
21 MPG city on the SH-AWD volume configuration — the turbo four has idle-stop but no cylinder deactivation or electric assist, and the extra driveline hardware costs a city MPG versus FWD.
27 MPG highway on the SH-AWD configuration, 1 MPG behind the FWD base car. Mid-pack for a gas compact luxury SUV.
A modest 17.1-gallon tank paired with 23 MPG combined leaves the SH-AWD RDX just short of 400 miles — usable but unremarkable for the segment.
The premium-fuel requirement compounds the mediocre 23 MPG combined — EPA's estimate lands near the top of the SUV cost band, one of the weakest figures in the segment and the single biggest drag on this category.
Acura recommends — rather than requires — 91-octane premium for the 2.0T, so 87 octane will run without damage at some cost in output and economy. EPA rates the car on premium, and that is what the $3,350/yr figure reflects; there is no E85, diesel or plug-in alternative.
3SafetyThe RDX's best-graded category.3.29B+
NHTSA's full test battery for the third-generation RDX (2019+ platform, unchanged for 2021) returned a 5-star overall rating.
The 2021 RDX earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+, the institute's highest award, with Good ratings in all six crashworthiness tests, Good headlights standard, and Superior front crash prevention.
AcuraWatch (forward collision warning, AEB/Collision Mitigation Braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow) is standard on every 2021 RDX trim, but blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are reserved for the Technology package and above.
IIHS rated the standard Collision Mitigation Braking System Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention (avoided collision at both 12 and 25 mph) and Advanced for daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian detection.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are alert-only and confined to the Technology package and above, unavailable on the base trim.
AcuraWatch's Lane Keeping Assist System and Road Departure Mitigation are standard and functional, nudging the car back toward lane center, but reviewers describe the system as competent rather than confidently smooth compared to class leaders.
Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow is standard across the 2021 RDX range and operates through the full speed range including stop-and-go traffic, though it is not paired with a dedicated hands-free highway-assist mode.
The 2021 RDX offers no hands-free highway driving system; AcuraWatch's adaptive cruise and lane keeping require the driver's hands on the wheel at all times.
IIHS rated the standard LED projector headlights Good across the 2021 RDX lineup, with high-beam assist included though not curve-adaptive.
Reviewers note thick front and rear roof pillars that compromise cornering and rear-quarter visibility, and the standard backup camera is weak at night; a 360-degree surround camera that would compensate is reserved for the top Advance trim.
The RDX seats 5 and provides two complete, clearly marked lower-anchor LATCH positions plus three top tethers; cars.com's car-seat check gave the LATCH system an A grade for accessible anchors and ample room.
4Space & ComfortOne of the RDX's weakest categories.1.08D
Two-row, five-passenger compact luxury SUV; no third-row option offered for 2021.
Mid-pack front headroom for the compact luxury SUV segment.
Average front legroom for the class.
Mid-pack rear headroom for a compact luxury SUV.
Competitive rear legroom, a traditional RDX strength versus German rivals.
The RDX is a strict two-row SUV for 2021 with no third-row seating offered on any trim.
Cargo volume behind the second row is modest even for a compact SUV, at the low end of the segment band.
Maximum cargo with rear seats folded is near the bottom of the SUV band, consistent with the RDX's compact footprint.
Competitive console bin, door pockets, and underfloor cargo storage, plus 60/40 flat-folding rear seats, but no standout storage innovation.
Front seats are repeatedly praised for cushioning and support over long drives; rear seats are competitive but not class-leading.
Suspension is well controlled and absorbs most bumps, but multiple reviewers note a firm, occasionally choppy ride on rough pavement.
Wind and road noise are well suppressed at highway speed; some grainy engine noise intrudes under hard acceleration.
Heated front seats and heated steering wheel are available from the Technology package up, with ventilated front seats and heated rear seats added on A-Spec/Advance — key comfort features concentrated on mid trims and above rather than standard fleet-wide.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.67D
Entry FWD base trim MSRP with destination, shown for reference only; sits mid-pack for a compact luxury SUV.
Technology Package with SH-AWD is the best-selling RDX configuration for 2021; shown for reference, feeds the effective ownership cost rather than being scored directly.
Edmunds True Cost to Own breaks maintenance and repairs out separately by trim; figures cluster tightly across the 2021 RDX lineup.
Industry residual estimates cluster around 58–62% retention (38–42% depreciation) at typical annual mileage; mid-pack for a compact luxury SUV.
Standard limited warranty length and mileage cap, unchanged for the 2021 model year.
Standard Acura powertrain coverage; below the 8-10 yr coverage some mainstream rivals (Hyundai, Kia) offer but typical for a luxury-brand compact SUV.
Acura bundles a short 1-year/12,000-mile complimentary service visit (oil/filter, tire rotation, multi-point inspection) plus genuine 4-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance under the basic warranty — real but modest coverage, with no multi-year prepaid plan or charging/connected-service credits included by default.
$44,345 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (60% retained, or about $26,607) leaves about $17,738 in depreciation. Add the projected $9,900 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $27,638 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.03C
Third-gen RDX (2019 redesign, carried into 2021 with no powertrain change) shows mixed signals: J.D. Power rates the 2021 RDX's predicted reliability at 74/100 (Average), while Consumer Reports flagged this generation for infotainment freezes/navigation glitches, trim pieces coming loose, premature brake wear, and squeaks/rattles, plus the well-documented 2.0T oil-dilution issue.
Acura's standing is split by source in this window: Consumer Reports ranked the brand 8th (climbing from 23rd) in its 2022 brand reliability report, while J.D. Power's 2022 dependability study showed Acura falling to among the bottom five brands — a mid-pack-to-inconsistent picture rather than a clear top-tier dependability brand.
The 2021 RDX's own recall record is minor — NHTSA 21V-939 covered an improperly heat-treated front driveshaft component on only 279 US vehicles — but it also falls under the much larger, later industrywide Honda/Acura airbag occupant-classification sensor campaign (NHTSA 24V-064, ~750k vehicles) and carries TSB 22-039 addressing 2.0T oil dilution via an ECU recalibration. Typical activity for the segment, not systemic powertrain failure, but not spotless either.
The 2.0L turbo-four (K20C4) paired with the 10-speed automatic is a newer design (since the 2019 redesign) with a documented, manufacturer-acknowledged flaw: direct-injection fuel wash causes oil dilution on short/cold trips, raising oil level and diluting lubricity, and Acura's own position is that this is 'normal' for GDI with no hardware remedy — only a software recalibration (TSB 22-039) to shorten cold-start enrichment. Separately, some owners report low-speed shudder from the 10-speed's low first gear/torque-converter lockup behavior, though TrueDelta repair data shows transmission/drivetrain repairs near 0% for this model year.
Reviewers consistently rate the cabin materials a clear step up from Honda, citing brushed aluminum, real/synthetic leather, A-Spec Ultrasuede and contrast stitching on higher trims as competitive with German rivals, short of class-leading. The true weak point is ergonomics (the touchpad infotainment controller), not material richness.
Consumer Reports' owner-survey writeups for this generation specifically call out trim pieces coming loose and squeaks/rattles alongside infotainment display glitches, placing assembly consistency at scattered-complaints rather than tight/solid.
Acura's roughly 270-dealer US network is smaller than mainstream-brand footprints but adequate for a luxury nameplate, and Acura posts competitive (if not segment-leading) J.D. Power customer-satisfaction scores among premium brands, behind leaders like Lexus but ahead of several rivals.
RepairPal rates the RDX 4.5/5.0, 1st among luxury compact SUVs, with an average annual repair cost of $497 — lower than most luxury-SUV rivals and helped by heavy parts-sharing with Honda's mainstream lineup (CR-V/Civic-derived architecture), keeping routine parts normal-to-affordable for the segment.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.30D
A single 10.2-inch display is offered fleet-wide (no larger screen option), landing below the middle of the SUV band.
Acura's True Touchpad Interface (absolute-position touchpad rather than a touchscreen) was widely criticized as unintuitive and distracting to use while driving, offsetting otherwise logical menu layout.
2021 RDX offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard fleet-wide, but only via wired connection — wireless projection was not added until the 2022 facelift.
Built-in navigation with an IVR voice system and Amazon Alexa integration is functional but most owners default to phone-based navigation via CarPlay/Android Auto.
Acura/ELS Studio Premium 12-speaker system (Technology trim) and ELS Studio 3D 16-speaker system (A-Spec/Advance) are well-regarded premium audio options; base audio is adequate.
The cluster pairs analog speedometer/tachometer dials with a 7-inch color Multi-Information Display rather than a configurable full-digital gauge display, a dated approach versus rivals' all-digital clusters.
AcuraLink supports cloud-routed navigation destinations and subscription services, but there is no evidence of whole-vehicle feature OTA updates for the 2021 RDX — connectivity is largely limited to map/data services.
The AcuraLink app provides remote start, lock/unlock, vehicle locate, and Alexa integration, but full functionality requires an ongoing AcuraLink subscription after the initial trial.
Two 2.5A USB ports are standard up front with wireless phone charging available, but rear USB ports are reserved for Technology package and above rather than standard fleet-wide.
Proximity keyless entry and push-button start are standard, with app-based remote start available via AcuraLink subscription; no phone-as-key feature in this generation.
A rearview camera with dynamic guidelines is standard; front/rear parking sensors are Technology-package-and-up, and the 360-degree surround-view camera is reserved for the range-topping Advance package only.
A 10.5-inch head-up display is offered but limited to the top Advance package rather than being broadly available.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.76C-
Standard LATCH anchors and a conventional two-row layout handle car seats and daily family loading competently, though rear door openings and a sloping roofline are less stroller/gear-friendly than larger family SUVs.
AcuraWatch (forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control) is standard across every 2021 trim, and the RDX earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ — the strongest available safety credential at a family-accessible price point.
Comfortable front seats and a quiet cabin support multi-hour trips for four occupants, but rear-seat amenities (no rear entertainment, modest cargo behind the second row) are thin versus larger family haulers.
Light, nicely weighted steering and a smooth 10-speed automatic make the RDX relaxing in traffic and easy to maneuver at low speeds.
EPA combined ratings of 24 MPG (FWD) / 23 MPG (AWD) are average for a turbocharged compact luxury SUV, with premium fuel recommended, holding commuting costs to roughly segment-typical rather than exceptional.
A 38.9-foot turning circle and compact SUV footprint make the RDX easy to park, aided by a standard rearview camera, though 360-degree camera assistance is Advance-trim-only.
Acura does not publish an official tow rating for the RDX and the vehicle is not marketed or equipped for towing or cargo-hauling work duty.
Average reliability ratings and a luxury-trim orientation (leather, upgraded materials) mean the RDX is not positioned or proven as a hard-use work vehicle.
No onboard AC power outlet, tie-down, or upfit ecosystem is offered — the RDX has essentially no jobsite-oriented provisions.
A quiet highway cabin, supportive front seats, and standard adaptive cruise control/AcuraWatch driver assists make the RDX a capable mile-eater, though fuel range is only segment-average.
Acura's SH-AWD system genuinely improves traction and handling confidence on gravel or wet roads, but the RDX lacks meaningful ground clearance, off-road drive modes, or towing capacity for true adventure duty.
60/40 split-folding rear seats, rear under-floor storage, and up to 58.9 cu ft of cargo space with seats folded handle normal luggage and moderate gear well, though roof rails/hitch are not standard across all trims.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the RDX's strongest categories.2.37C+
Reviewers consistently praise the RDX's tight, athletic handling with minimal body roll, with Acura's Super-Handling AWD meaningfully sharpening cornering power-out.
Steering is light and easy at parking-lot speeds but firms up appropriately at highway speed, giving a confident sense of control without being overly communicative.
No major brake complaints surface in owner or press reviews, and the pedal is described as part of an overall composed, secure driving experience, but no instrumented stopping-distance data was found for the 2021 model specifically.
The 10-speed automatic shifts smoothly and the 2.0L turbo-four delivers strong low-end torque (280 lb-ft from 1,600-4,500 rpm), though some turbo lag off the line is noted by reviewers.
The cabin stays quiet most of the time, but the turbo-four produces a noticeably grainy, coarse note under hard acceleration.
A 38.9-foot turning diameter is toward the larger (less maneuverable) end of the compact-SUV band.
Seating position, sightlines, and seat/wheel adjustability are strong, but the True Touchpad Interface's non-touchscreen control scheme adds a real learning curve to everyday ergonomics.
With SH-AWD, reviewers describe the RDX as genuinely engaging for the segment, though it remains an appliance-like commuter on FWD trims without the system.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the RDX's strongest categories.2.40C+
Even the base FWD trim ($38,400) includes the full AcuraWatch suite (adaptive cruise, lane-keeping, AEB, road departure mitigation), a 10.2-in display, 8-way power driver's seat and LED lighting — stronger base content than BMW X3 or Mercedes GLC, which gate driver-assist features behind option packages, though not as loaded-at-base as Genesis GV70.
At $44,345 for a well-equipped SH-AWD Technology trim, the RDX undercuts comparably equipped German rivals (X3, GLC, Q5) by several thousand dollars while matching turbo-four power output and offering more standard safety tech — a recognized value play in the segment, just short of Genesis GV70's content-per-dollar lead.
Five trims (Base, Technology, A-Spec, Advance, limited-run PMC Edition) spanning $38,400–$51,000, each FWD or SH-AWD except PMC — a well-spaced range from value-focused base to sport-styled A-Spec to loaded Advance, with only a modest gap between A-Spec and Advance.
The RDX sold roughly 57,000 units in the US in 2021 (+8% YoY), a steady mid-pack result, but it trailed the segment's top sellers — Audi Q5, Lexus NX and Mercedes GLC/GLK all outsold it through the first half of the year.
Acura carries a solid but not aspirational image relative to BMW, Mercedes or Audi — perceived as a reliable value-luxury alternative rather than a status brand, with a loyal but smaller following than the European marques.
Acura dealers typically offered meaningful lease cash and finance incentives on the RDX through 2021 without the heavy discounting that would signal a struggling model — buyers could reasonably negotiate off MSRP, more room than segment-leading Lexus NX or Audi Q5 typically allowed.
2021 is the third model year of the third generation (launched for MY2019) — current and not yet dated, but mid-cycle, with Acura already announcing a facelift (new fascias, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, limited PMC Edition) arriving for MY2022, so buyers face a visible freshening just one year out.
Generally well-reviewed for this generation — Kelley Blue Book ranked the 2021 RDX #3 among compact luxury SUVs (ahead of Lexus NX) — praised for value, tech and ride, though rarely the outright pick over the Audi Q5/Mercedes GLC in head-to-head comparison tests.
