The verdict
A mixed-report compact luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The 2023 RDX is one of the safest and most sensible compact luxury SUVs. It is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with a 5-star NHTSA rating, Honda-derived hardware keeps repair bills low, and it starts at $42,545, well below comparable German rivals. It is also fun to drive, especially with SH-AWD. The trade-offs are a single thirsty turbo four on premium fuel (about $3,550 a year), a 1,500-lb tow limit, and a touchpad infotainment system many owners never warm to.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the RDX's weakest categories.0.64F
2023 is a carry-over year within the third generation (2019–) after the 2022 facelift; every trim uses the same 2.0L DOHC VTEC turbo four.
A broad, low-starting torque plateau gives the RDX strong midrange shove for its displacement.
Instrumented tests of the unchanged third-gen 2.0T SH-AWD powertrain consistently land in the low-6-second range; no powertrain changes for 2023.
The 2.0T pulls hard once boost builds and feels muscular in traffic, but reviewers note a beat of off-boost lag from rest and a coarse note near redline versus BMW and Mercedes turbo fours.
The standard 10-speed automatic is smooth when cruising and sensible in Sport, but reviewers cite gear hunting in Comfort/Normal and slow kickdowns.
1,500 lbs regardless of drivetrain sits at the bottom of the SUV band and well below compact luxury rivals rated at 3,500–4,400 lbs.
For 2023 SH-AWD was an option on the Base, Technology and A-Spec trims and standard on the Advance and A-Spec Advance; FWD was still offered (it was dropped for 2024). SH-AWD itself is sophisticated — up to 70% of torque rearward with 100% of that to either rear wheel, plus Snow mode — but it is not standard and there is no low range.
About 8.2 in of ground clearance and available SH-AWD with Snow mode make it fine on snowy or gravel roads, but there is no off-road trim, skid plates, locker or terrain modes beyond Snow.
One gas engine and one transmission across the range, with only a FWD/SH-AWD choice and no hybrid, PHEV or EV; rivals such as the Lexus NX, Volvo XC60 and Audi Q5 offer electrified versions.
2Efficiency & RangeThe RDX's lowest-graded category.0.20F
Scored on the volume SH-AWD configuration; the FWD version that was still sold in 2023 rates 1 MPG better.
Idle stop is fitted, but with no cylinder deactivation or electric assist city economy is average for a gas compact luxury SUV.
Highway economy is mid-pack for a gas compact luxury SUV.
A small 17.1-gallon tank and 23 MPG combined put range just under 400 miles, short of the 450+ many gas SUVs reach.
EPA rates the RDX on premium fuel, so average economy plus premium prices puts annual cost near the top of the SUV band.
Acura recommends rather than requires 91-octane premium, so regular will run at some cost in output, but EPA rates and costs the car on premium and there is no flex-fuel or electrified option.
3SafetyThe RDX's best-graded category.3.57A-
NHTSA rates both 2023 RDX drivetrains 5 stars overall; 2023 is a carry-over year within the 2019-launched third generation following the 2022 facelift, with no structural change.
The 2023 RDX earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ under the 2023 criteria, with Good in every crashworthiness test it holds a rating in, including the tougher updated side test. That is the top award available for the year, held back slightly from the very top only because the updated moderate overlap (rear-passenger) test was not yet rated.
Every 2023 trim, base through A-Spec Advance, has the full AcuraWatch suite as standard: collision mitigation braking with pedestrian detection, road departure mitigation, lane keeping assist, full-speed adaptive cruise with Low-Speed Follow, traffic sign recognition, auto high beams, plus blind spot information and rear cross traffic monitor. Only parking sensors and the surround-view camera depend on trim.
IIHS rates the standard system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle and for daytime pedestrian front crash prevention, and Advanced for nighttime pedestrian. That is a top-tier result except for one notch short on the nighttime pedestrian test.
Blind Spot Information and Rear Cross Traffic Monitor are standard on all 2023 trims, which is better availability than several rivals. Both only warn, though: there is no active steering or braking intervention and no safe-exit alert.
LKAS, lane departure warning and road departure mitigation are all standard, and LKAS does some lane centering on well-marked highways. However, 2023 does not have the Traffic Jam Assist added in 2025, so there is no low-speed steering support, and reviewers call the system functional, with some wander on faded markings.
Adaptive cruise with Low-Speed Follow is standard on every trim, covers stop-and-go, and reviewers describe it as smooth. It sits below the top band because, without Traffic Jam Assist, ACC and LKAS do not work together as a coordinated low-speed highway assist the way some rivals' systems do.
No 2023 RDX trim offers hands-free highway driving. AcuraWatch requires hands on the wheel at all times.
IIHS rates the RDX's LED headlights Good, and auto high-beam is standard on every 2023 trim. It stops short of the very top only because it lacks curve-adaptive beam steering.
Forward and side sightlines are good and reviewers say the rear-quarter blind spots are small for the class. However, the rising beltline and thick D-pillars still limit the over-the-shoulder view. A multi-view rear camera is standard, but parking sensors are missing on the base car and surround view is limited to the Advance trims.
IIHS gives the RDX's LATCH hardware its top G+ rating, meaning the anchors are easy to reach and there are extra usable positions. Wide rear doors and 38.0 in of rear legroom fit two child seats comfortably; three across is tight, as in most compact SUVs.
4Space & ComfortOne of the RDX's weakest categories.1.42D
The 2023 RDX is a two-row, five-passenger compact luxury SUV on every trim (RDX, Technology, A-Spec, Advance, A-Spec Advance); no third row is offered.
40.0 in of front headroom is good for the class despite the panoramic roof being standard on every 2023 trim.
42.0 in of front legroom is mid-pack for a compact SUV.
38.0 in of second-row headroom is adequate for adults even with the standard panoramic roof.
38.0 in of rear legroom is generous for the compact luxury class, ahead of most German rivals; adults fit comfortably on longer trips.
There is no third row on any 2023 RDX trim — a two-row, five-seat SUV only.
29.5 cu ft behind the rear seats is near the top of the compact luxury class, though it scores low against a band that spans all SUV sizes.
Acura quotes 79.8 cu ft with the seats folded including floor space between rows; the strict SAE J1100 figure is 58.9 cu ft.
Large under-floor cargo bins, a tiered center console with an open lower bay and good door pockets give competitive everyday storage; only a front 12V outlet below the Advance trims and no household outlet.
Front sport seats are supportive with 12-way power and lumbar standard (16-way with thigh extension and power bolsters on Advance); rear bench is well shaped for two adults.
Composed and comfortable on the 19-in wheels with standard Amplitude Reactive Dampers; the A-Spec's 20-in wheels add firmness, and adaptive dampers are limited to Advance trims.
Acoustic windshield and Active Sound Control are standard and acoustic front glass comes from Technology up, keeping highway noise low, though the 2.0T gets coarse under load.
Heated front seats, dual-zone climate and panoramic roof are standard; ventilated fronts come from A-Spec, but heated rear seats and a standard heated wheel are reserved for Advance trims.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.93C-
2023 is the last RDX year offered with front-wheel drive, so the entry price is the FWD base car; SH-AWD adds $2,200. A $750 increase over 2022, and still well below German rivals' AWD entry points.
The Technology Package with SH-AWD is the volume configuration — navigation, ELS Studio audio, leather and parking sensors over the base car, and most US buyers pick SH-AWD. Volume-trim identity is inferred from dealer mix and the same trim's role in adjacent years.
Inexpensive to keep for a luxury compact SUV — Honda mechanicals, the proven 2.0T/10-speed and two years of newly included scheduled service hold costs below German rivals, while premium fuel, 19-inch tires and SH-AWD fluid service keep it above a mainstream CR-V.
Above-average residuals for compact luxury — Acura's reliability reputation and steady demand keep depreciation under the segment norm. FWD examples resell slightly weaker than SH-AWD, but the volume trim is AWD.
Acura's standard 4-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty — par for luxury brands, matching the German three and trailing Genesis (5/60).
6 years/70,000 miles beats the German 4/50 standard but sits near the bottom of the framework's 5–10 year band, well short of Genesis/Hyundai/Kia's 10/100.
2023 is the year Acura added the Acura Maintenance Package to the RDX — 2 years/24,000 miles of select factory-scheduled service — plus three years of complimentary AcuraLink (Security and Remote packages) and 4-yr/50,000-mi Total Luxury Care roadside assistance. A real package, though shorter and narrower than BMW's 3-year or Genesis's multi-year coverage.
$47,395 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (56% retained, or about $26,541) leaves about $20,854 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $26,654 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the RDX's strongest categories.3.34B+
2023 is a carry-over year of the post-2022-facelift third-generation RDX (TC1/TC2, on sale since 2019), and the predictors converge on average-to-above-average: J.D. Power rates the 2023 RDX 80/100 for quality & reliability (top of its 'Average' band) and Consumer Reports calls it about average for the model year, while owner-complaint aggregators put it above the segment norm. Good, but a clear step below the Lexus NX/UX benchmark.
Acura sits near the top of Consumer Reports' brand rankings in this period — reported 4th with 70 points behind Lexus and Toyota — while J.D. Power's 2023 Vehicle Dependability Study leaves it outside the named premium leaders (Lexus 133, Genesis 144, Cadillac 173, BMW 184 PP100). Strongly above mid-pack, short of the consistent top-five band.
The 2023 model year carries a single recall, and a tiny one: NHTSA 23V430000, a VSA modulator ball valve that could leak brake fluid (unintended movement with Brake Hold, longer pedal travel), covering just 386 units across the 2023 Civic, Integra, RDX and 2022 Accord. Only 3 owner complaints are logged, but the TSB file is long (57 bulletins, mostly software/infotainment updates accumulated over the year's service life), so it lands in the upper-typical band rather than spotless.
The 2.0L VTEC Turbo (K20C family, 272 hp / 280 lb-ft) shares its architecture with the Civic Si/Type R and Accord 2.0T and has a long high-mileage record with no systemic failure mode; the Honda 10-speed automatic has been in service since the 2018 Accord and is likewise proven. The volume FWD/SH-AWD configurations both use hardware with long Honda/Acura service histories.
The 2022 facelift added sound insulation and the cabin uses real metal and open-pore wood with Milano leather on upper trims, and reviewers call the materials high quality for the price; they also consistently note it falls short of BMW X3 / Mercedes GLC richness, and the touchpad infotainment interface dates the presentation.
Built at Honda's East Liberty, Ohio plant, the RDX draws praise for upscale fit and finish, and the 2023 model year has very few owner complaints on file with no pattern of rattles or misalignment. Not quite the tightness of Japanese-built Lexus product.
Roughly 270+ US Acura dealers is thinner than a mainstream brand or Lexus's footprint, though metro coverage is good and every store can draw on Honda parts and expertise. J.D. Power rates the 2023 RDX dealership experience 84/100 ('Great').
Deep parts commonality with the Honda Civic/CR-V/Accord (K20C engine family, related platform hardware) keeps commodity parts cheap and abundant, and measured ownership cost runs roughly 40% below the luxury-compact norm with a low probability of severe repair.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.19C
Every 2023 RDX has a 10.2-in center display, but it is not a touchscreen; input is via the console touchpad.
The absolute-positioning touchpad has a learning curve and is widely cited as the RDX's main usability drawback, though some owners come to prefer it to a smudged touchscreen.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard on every 2023 trim.
Natural-language voice recognition and Alexa Built-In are standard, but native navigation with real-time traffic is missing from the base trim.
ELS Studio audio is a highlight: 12 speakers on Technology and the well-regarded 16-speaker ELS Studio 3D on A-Spec and Advance trims; even the base 9-speaker system is decent.
Analog gauges flank a 7-in color multi-information display on every trim; no full-digital cluster is available on the 2023 RDX.
AcuraLink connectivity and Wi-Fi hotspot are standard, but the 2023 RDX has no documented whole-vehicle over-the-air update capability.
New for 2023, three years of AcuraLink (remote lock/unlock, locate, remote start where equipped) are complimentary; key-fob remote start is standard only on Advance and there is no digital key.
Only two 2.5A USB-A charge ports up front and no USB-C anywhere; wireless charging is standard from Technology (accessory on base) and there is no household outlet.
Proximity entry and push-button start are standard and every trim has a power liftgate; hands-free liftgate and fob remote start are Advance-only, and no phone-as-key is offered.
Multi-view rear camera is standard and front/rear parking sensors arrive from Technology up, but the surround-view camera is limited to the two Advance trims.
A large 10.5-in HUD is offered, but only on the top Advance and A-Spec Advance trims.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.10C
Top-grade LATCH hardware, 38.0 in of rear legroom and a wide 29.5 cu ft cargo hold make family duty easy for one or two car seats; five-seat-only limits larger families.
An IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, and the full AcuraWatch suite (AEB, adaptive cruise, lane keeping, blind-spot) is standard on the base trim families can afford.
Quiet cabin, roomy rear seat and class-leading cargo suit weekend trips, but rear amenities are thin — no rear climate zone or rear USB, and heated rear seats only on Advance.
Standard adaptive cruise with Low-Speed Follow and auto brake hold ease stop-and-go, but the turbo's brief hesitation and the touchpad interface add minor daily friction.
EPA 21/27/23 MPG (SH-AWD) or 22/28/24 (FWD) on required premium fuel is below-average for compact luxury rivals with hybrid options and costly per mile.
At 187.4 in long and 74.8 in wide the RDX is easy to place in town and front/rear sensors come from Technology up, but the 38.9-ft turning circle is wide for the class and 360 cameras are Advance-only.
Towing is capped at 1,500 lb on every configuration — fine for a small utility trailer, nowhere near real work duty.
Proven K20C 2.0T and 10-speed hardware built in Ohio should hold up, but the leather/Ultrasuede-trimmed luxury cabin is not suited to hard use.
Few work provisions: no household outlet, only 12V power, roof rails are an accessory and there is no factory hitch.
Quiet, supportive and equipped with standard adaptive cruise, the RDX is a good tourer, though roughly 390-mi range on premium fuel is only average.
Torque-vectoring SH-AWD (optional on 2023 — base FWD remains) and 8.2 in of ground clearance handle gravel and snow well, but the 1,500-lb tow limit and lack of factory rails cap adventure use.
29.5 cu ft behind the rear seats (31.1 with under-floor bins) is class-leading and the 60/40 seat folds to 79.8 cu ft, though only a 60/40 split (no pass-through) and no factory roof rails or hitch.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.67C+
With SH-AWD's torque vectoring, Agile Handling Assist and firm tuning, the RDX is one of the sharpest-handling compact luxury SUVs; FWD versions are less incisive.
Quick variable-ratio electric steering is precise and well weighted, with more feedback than most class rivals.
Brakes stop the RDX well, but reviewers note a somewhat soft initial pedal.
The 272-hp 2.0T delivers 280 lb-ft from 1,600 rpm and the 10-speed is smooth in normal driving, though there is a brief turbo hesitation and the gearbox can hunt.
Quiet at cruise, but the four-cylinder gets coarse under hard acceleration, partly masked by Active Sound Control.
38.9 ft is on the wide side for a compact SUV.
Good seat and telescoping-wheel adjustment and a commanding view, but the touchpad and button-type gear selector take acclimatization.
Among the more entertaining compact luxury SUVs, especially with SH-AWD and Sport mode; owners describe it as handling 'like a sports car'.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the RDX's strongest categories.2.86B-
The $42,545 base car includes the full AcuraWatch suite (AEB, adaptive cruise, lane keeping, road departure mitigation), blind-spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring, a panoramic moonroof, leatherette, the 10.2-inch display with wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, 19-inch wheels and three years of AcuraLink — rivals charge extra for several of these. It scores a little below 2024 because SH-AWD was still a $2,200 option.
Strong bang-for-buck: 272 hp, a standard ADAS suite and the option of torque-vectoring SH-AWD from $44,745, several thousand dollars under a comparably equipped X3, GLC or Q5. It falls short of the top band because there's only one gas powertrain and no hybrid.
Eight configurations from $42,545 to $54,545: base, Technology and A-Spec in FWD or SH-AWD, plus Advance and A-Spec Advance in SH-AWD only. That makes it a wider, cheaper ladder than 2024's AWD-only lineup. There's still just one engine, with no hybrid, PHEV or Type S, while Lexus NX and Mercedes GLC offer several.
As chip-shortage supply recovered, RDX sales rebounded sharply in calendar 2023 and it was again Acura's best seller. It is a solid mid-pack seller among compact luxury SUVs, well behind the RX, NX, X3 and GLC.
Acura is a respected second-tier luxury brand, known for engineering, quality and value and with loyal repeat buyers. It lacks the aspirational pull of the German three or the prestige of Lexus, and sits roughly level with Volvo and Genesis.
Inventory was still tight early in the 2023 model year, so discounts were modest. Incentives improved through 2023 as supply recovered: subvented Acura Financial Services leases, promotional APRs and loyalty cash, but not the deep discounts later seen on the 2024 model.
This is mid-cycle: the fifth year of the third generation (MY2019) and one year after the MY2022 facelift, which brought new fascias, extra sound insulation and wireless CarPlay/Android Auto. No redesign was imminent, since the fourth generation is expected around MY2028, but the touchpad infotainment and platform trailed newer rivals like the 2023 GLC.
Well reviewed and widely recommended, though rarely the top pick in its class. Reviewers praise the SH-AWD handling, ELS audio, cargo room and value, and criticize the touchpad interface and the lack of a hybrid. Its IIHS Top Safety Pick+ under the stricter 2023 criteria is a meaningful award, but it has no 10Best or NACTOY.
