The verdict
A capable compact luxury sedan, strong on technology and held back by efficiency.
The redesigned 2026 A5 Sportback is the most convincing thing Audi has built in this class in years: a genuinely new platform, a 14.5-inch curved OLED cabin that outclasses most of the segment, an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, standard quattro all-wheel drive, and a hatchback tailgate hiding 21.8 cu ft of cargo — nearly double what a same-size sedan trunk holds. What you pay for it is steep and ongoing: about $53,195 for the trim most buyers actually order, 26 MPG combined on required premium fuel (roughly $2,600 a year), no free scheduled maintenance, and a powertrain warranty that stops at 4 years/50,000 miles with nothing extra behind it. Rear seat space is snug at 36.1 inches of legroom, and the 268-hp 2.0-liter is adequate rather than quick at 5.6 seconds to 60. Buy it for the cabin, the safety credentials, the all-weather traction and the cargo hatch — not for value or running costs.

1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.92C-
Volume US trim is the 45 TFSI quattro — 2.0L turbo I4 with 48V mild hybrid rated at 268 hp. Modest output for the compact-luxury field: BMW 330i (255 hp) is close, but M340i and Mercedes C43 pull well ahead.
295 lb-ft from 1,700–4,000 rpm delivers a broad, flexible torque plateau typical of modern 2.0T mild-hybrid Audis — respectable for the segment though behind six-cylinder rivals.
Audi USA officially lists 5.6 s for the A5 Sportback 45 TFSI quattro; independent instrumented tests (Car and Driver on the closely-related 2025 A5) have measured as quick as 5.2 s, suggesting the manufacturer figure is conservative.
48V mild hybrid smooths start-stop and low-speed transitions; throttle response is crisp and turbo lag well-managed. Under hard load the 2.0T sounds slightly coarse relative to BMW's B48 and Mercedes' M254, but everyday refinement is solidly above average for the segment.
7-speed S tronic dual-clutch delivers quick, decisive upshifts and sharp paddle response at pace. Typical DCT low-speed quirks — occasional hesitation from a stop or a jerky part-throttle 1-2 engagement — hold it back from a class-leading rating.
quattro all-wheel drive is standard on every US-market A5 Sportback trim (and mandatory on S5/RS 5). Audi's mechanical Torsen-based / electronically-managed quattro system is one of the more sophisticated setups in the compact-luxury field.
US A5 Sportback is gas-only: single 2.0T mild-hybrid on A5, 3.0T V6 on S5, twin-turbo V6 on the RS 5 halo. No hybrid, PHEV, or EV variant — Audi routes electrified compact-luxury buyers to the separate e-tron lines. Rivals like the BMW 3 Series (330e PHEV) and Mercedes C-Class (C300 mild-hybrid + AMG electrified options) offer broader electrification.
2Efficiency & RangeThe A5 Sportback's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The volume 2.0T quattro Sportback returns 26 MPG combined — weak for a hatchback where hybrid rivals (Prius, Civic Hybrid Hatchback) and EVs (Leaf, Fiat 500e) score meaningfully better, and marginally behind the A5 sedan sibling because the Sportback body carries slightly more mass and drag.
22 MPG city is poor for a hatchback — no full hybrid regeneration, only a 48V mild-hybrid on the 2.0T, and standard quattro AWD add parasitic drag versus FWD hybrid hatch rivals.
32 MPG highway is respectable for a quattro-standard turbo four but still trails FWD compact hatchbacks and any electrified rival in the segment.
A 14.8-gallon tank paired with 26 MPG combined yields roughly 385 mi of mixed-driving range, or ~474 mi at the highway rating — mid-pack for compact hatchbacks and well behind hybrids that squeeze 500+ mi from smaller tanks.
At 26 MPG combined on required 91-octane premium and 15,000 mi/yr, EPA methodology yields roughly $2,600 in annual fuel — high for a compact hatchback because mediocre combined MPG and the premium-fuel premium compound.
The A5 Sportback's 2.0T is required — not just recommended — to run on 91-octane premium unleaded per Audi's owner's manual, adding roughly 40–60¢/gal versus regular. No E85, diesel, or home-charging alternative exists on this hatchback.
3SafetyOne of the A5 Sportback's strongest categories.3.57A-
NHTSA has selected the 2026 A5 for 5-Star Safety Ratings testing but full 2026 results are not yet published; the outgoing 2025 A5 earned 5 stars overall (4 frontal, 5 side, 5 rollover) and the new architecture shares core safety hardware. Given the 2026 IIHS TSP+ under the stricter new criteria, a 5-star NHTSA carryover is a reasonable estimate.
The 2026 A5 earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ under the tougher 2026 criteria, with Good ratings in the updated moderate overlap front test (rear-seat emphasis), updated side test, and both updated front crash prevention tests (vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian). Audi took six 2026 TSP+ awards — more than any other luxury brand.
The 2026 A5 comes standard with Audi pre sense (AEB with forward collision warning), Audi adaptive cruise assist (ACC + lane guidance), Audi active lane assist (LDW + LKA), and Audi side assist (blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert) on the base Premium trim — a comprehensive standard suite consistent with the 2026 TSP+ requirement that qualifying front-crash-prevention systems be standard.
IIHS awarded Good in both the updated vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian front crash prevention tests — the 2026 protocol now requires nighttime pedestrian performance and higher closing speeds, so a clean Good sweep places pre sense in the top tier.
Audi side assist (blind-spot monitor) and rear cross-traffic assist with braking are standard, and Park Assist Plus with top-view camera and front cross-traffic assist are available on higher trims. Coverage is alert-plus-rear-brake rather than the active steering intervention offered by some rivals, and safe-exit alerts are not called out.
Active lane assist (LDW + LKA) is standard and adaptive cruise assist adds lane guidance for centered highway operation. Reviewers describe the system as smooth and unobtrusive with confident centering at highway speeds, though it does not attempt hands-off operation and can ping between lane markings on faded rural roads.
Adaptive cruise assist is a full-speed-range, stop-and-go ACC integrated with lane guidance and traffic-jam assist, and reviewers consistently praise its smoothness, distance management, and resume behavior. It is standard on every 2026 A5 trim.
Audi does not offer a hands-free highway driving system in the US on the 2026 A5 — adaptive cruise assist is a hands-on lane-centering system with driver-monitoring nags. No BlueCruise/Super Cruise-equivalent is available at any trim.
IIHS rated the 2026 A5 headlights Good — a requirement for its 2026 TSP+ award. LED headlights with auto high-beam assist are standard, and adaptive Matrix LED digital headlights with individually addressable pixels are optional on higher trims.
The Sportback's fast, sloping roofline and thick C-pillars produce noticeable rear-three-quarter blind zones and a shallow rear window — reviewers frequently call out the compromise versus a conventional sedan. Camera compensation is good (rear camera standard, top-view/360 camera optional), and the low cowl gives a clear forward view.
IIHS rated the outgoing A5's LATCH hardware favorably — easy-to-find lower anchors and tether points in the two outboard positions, with a third tether in the center. In practice the sportback's sloping roofline and narrow rear-door aperture make loading a child seat awkward (some ducking required), and the rear bench is tight for three-across seats or a large rear-facing installation.
4Space & ComfortGrades above the middle of the scale.2.88B-
Standard 5-passenger seating (2 front, 3 rear) on all trims.
Front headroom is generous at the top of the hatchback segment band.
Front legroom sits in the lower third of the hatchback segment band.
Rear headroom is mid-pack for the hatchback segment; the sloping fastback roofline limits it.
Rear legroom is tight — below the middle of the hatchback segment band; adult-usable for average heights but not spacious.
The liftback design yields class-leading cargo volume behind the rear seats — above the hatchback segment band.
Typical premium-sedan storage — usable center console, decent door bins, wireless charging pad — but no standout innovation. The liftback tailgate adds practical everyday cargo flexibility versus a traditional sedan trunk.
Front sport seats are well-cushioned and supportive over long stints; rear seats are amply cushioned though space is tight. Reviews cite comfort as a strength.
Comfort-biased suspension tuning delivers a forgiving ride that absorbs broken pavement well while retaining composed body control; adaptive damping (S line) sharpens response without harshness.
Audi's traditional emphasis on NVH shows — quiet at highway speed with well-suppressed wind and road noise; the 2.0T is smooth and unobtrusive. Class-competitive for luxury compact.
Rich luxury feature set: standard heated front seats and heated steering wheel, three-zone climate control, available ventilated and massaging front seats, panoramic sunroof (Premium Plus and up), and Audi Connect remote pre-conditioning.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the A5 Sportback's weakest categories.0.23F
Base Premium 40 TFSI quattro trim carries over from 2025 with a modest year-over-year bump; A5 Sportback replaces the outgoing A4 under Audi's new odd-ICE naming convention.
Premium Plus 45 TFSI quattro is the volume trim, adding the S line pkg, matrix-design LED headlights, Bang & Olufsen 3D, and larger MMI display; carryover pricing from 2025 with a small MY bump.
Turbocharged German luxury compact with premium-only fuel, direct-injection top-end service, and dealer-network parts pricing lands well above segment median; no complimentary scheduled maintenance from Audi.
German luxury compact sedans/hatches depreciate faster than mainstream rivals as off-warranty repair anxiety and heavy new-car incentives compress used values; A5 tracks A4 historical curve.
Audi USA new-vehicle limited warranty is 4 yr / 50k mi — mid-pack for luxury, one year longer than most mainstream brands but shorter than Genesis or Jaguar.
Audi USA does not offer a longer powertrain-specific warranty — coverage matches the 4/50k basic. This is significantly shorter than the 5–10 yr powertrain terms common at competitors.
Audi discontinued Audi Care Free scheduled maintenance in 2020, so no included maintenance ships with the car. Package includes 4-yr / unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a limited Audi connect PLUS trial (typically 6 mo–1 yr), plus a 3-yr SiriusXM 360L trial — solid perks but no free service visits.
$53,195 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (49% retained, or about $26,066) leaves about $27,129 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $34,329 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades above the middle of the scale.2.83B-
The 2026 A5 Sportback rides on Audi's all-new B10/PPC platform with a revised EA888 evo5 2.0T, MHEV plus 48V system, and new E3 1.2 electrical architecture — first-year-of-generation risk on top of Audi's mid-pack brand baseline. Consumer Reports has not yet issued a reliability verdict for this specific generation, and early reviews have flagged MMI Panoramic Display bugs.
Audi's multi-year dependability standing is consistently mid-pack to below-average — better than Land Rover/Alfa but well behind Lexus, Toyota, and Buick, and slightly trailing BMW and Mercedes in recent studies.
First MY on the B10 platform and E3 1.2 electrical architecture means limited recall history; the 2025 launch had documented MMI/software-related service campaigns which typically continue into the first year of the follow-on MY. No fire or drivetrain-critical recalls flagged as of this snapshot.
The 2.0T EA888 evo5 with MHEV plus is a new evolution of a well-proven VW Group four; long-term durability of the evo5 belt-integrated 48V starter-generator and revised cooling circuit is unproven at scale, offsetting the strength of the underlying EA888 lineage. Paired with the 7-speed S tronic (DL382 wet-clutch DCT), which has a clean track record.
The new A5 cabin — with its 'digital stage' dual-screen dash, revised soft-touch surfaces, and reduced piano-black usage — has been broadly praised as a step forward from the already-strong outgoing A4/A5, and remains a segment benchmark alongside the Genesis G70 and Volvo S60.
Physical assembly quality — panel gaps, switch action, cabin damping — remains a segment strength, but early B10 reviews and owner reports have flagged software glitches (MMI freezes, mild hybrid stutter) that pull down initial-quality perception even where mechanical build is tight.
Roughly 300 US Audi dealers — adequate national coverage but visibly sparser than BMW (~350) or Mercedes-Benz (~380), and thin in rural areas. Service satisfaction scores mid-pack for luxury.
European luxury parts pricing and specialized labor rates push repair costs well above mainstream sedans/hatches; brand-new B10 electronics and MHEV plus 48V components are dealer-only for the foreseeable future, with limited independent-shop tooling and no aftermarket depth yet.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe A5 Sportback's best-graded category.3.63A-
All-new B10-generation A5 debuts Audi's Digital Stage: a 14.5-inch curved OLED MMI touchscreen standard alongside an 11.9-inch Virtual Cockpit Plus, with an optional 10.9-inch front-passenger display.
New MMI runs on Audi's E3 1.2 architecture with an Android Automotive OS base; graphics are crisp, response is quick, and the Digital Stage layout is legible. Reviewers ding it for elimination of the older MMI rotary controller and deeper menu nesting for climate.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard across the A5 lineup, and CarPlay can project onto the optional passenger display as well.
New Audi Assistant supports natural-language commands with cloud + on-board processing and can control climate/nav/media by voice. MMI Navigation Plus with cloud-based map updates and predictive routing from Audi Connect is standard.
Standard 10-speaker system is solid; the optional Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System with 3D — a widely-praised luxury audio benchmark — is available on Premium Plus and standard on Prestige.
11.9-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus digital gauge cluster is standard on every trim, offering multiple layouts including full-screen Google Maps. Class benchmark for a configurable full-digital cluster.
The new E3 1.2 electronics architecture enables full-vehicle over-the-air updates spanning infotainment, ADAS, and vehicle software. Cadence still trails Tesla/Rivian but is a step change over the old A4/A5's maps-only OTAs.
myAudi app offers remote lock/unlock, vehicle status, locate, and trip data, plus Audi Connect PLUS features. Digital Key (UWB, Apple Wallet) is supported, but many premium remote functions are gated behind an Audi Connect subscription after the trial.
Four USB-C ports (two front, two rear) with fast-charge output, plus a standard Audi Phone Box wireless charger with signal booster. No 120V household outlet is offered.
Advanced Key (proximity entry + push-button start) is standard, hands-free power liftgate with kick sensor is available, and Digital Key via smartphone (Apple Wallet UWB) is supported on the new platform.
Rear camera and front/rear parking sensors are standard; a high-resolution 360-degree top-view camera with Park Assist Plus (semi-automated parking) is available on Premium Plus and standard on Prestige. Image quality ranks among the better luxury systems.
A full-color head-up display is offered but restricted to the Premium Plus (optional) and Prestige (standard) trims — not available on the base Premium volume trim.
8Use-Case FitOne of the A5 Sportback's weakest categories.1.80C-
Two full outboard LATCH sets plus a center tether on a five-passenger bench, but the Sportback's fastback roofline further crowds rear-facing installations behind a taller driver, and 36.1 in of rear legroom with 37.2 in of rear headroom is tight for a rear-facing infant seat. Narrower rear-door aperture from the sportback roofline makes seat loading slightly more awkward than a conventional sedan.
Strong family safety credentials on the trim families actually buy: IIHS 2026 Top Safety Pick+ (Good in the updated moderate-overlap front, side, vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian FCP tests) plus a carryover 5-star NHTSA overall, and every 2026 A5 Sportback trim ships standard with Audi pre sense AEB, adaptive cruise assist with lane centering, active lane assist, and Audi side assist blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic braking. Held back only by the lack of a marketed rear-occupant reminder.
The Sportback's 21.8 cu ft liftback cargo hold swallows a family's road-trip luggage plus a stroller — a genuine step up on the A4 sedan sibling — and standard tri-zone climate with rear vents, four USB-C ports, and a quiet cabin (cat4 quietness 82) support long stints. Rear legroom of 36.1 in and the sloped rear headroom cap what four-plus occupants can comfortably endure over multi-hour trips.
48V MHEV-assisted 2.0T is smooth on restart, adaptive cruise assist with stop-and-go and lane centering is standard, the cabin is hushed (cat4 quietness 82), and heated 8-way power front seats and heated steering wheel are available. Reviewers still flag the 7-speed S tronic DCT's low-speed hesitation and jerky part-throttle 1-2 shifts in stop-and-go traffic as a daily-driver annoyance.
EPA 26 MPG combined (22/32 city/hwy) on required 91-octane premium works out to roughly $2,600/yr in fuel — well above hybrid rivals (Lexus IS, Volvo S60 Recharge) and any EV competitor (BMW i4, Polestar 2). Slightly worse per-mile than the A4 sedan sibling because the Sportback carries a bit more mass and drag, and premium tires plus dealer-network service compound the running cost.
Compact-luxury footprint at roughly 187 in long and ~73 in wide with a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors standard, plus an optional 360° top-view camera with Park Assist Plus on Premium Plus and up. Natural sightlines are dragged down by the Sportback's fast, sloping roofline and thick C-pillars, which produce a shallow rear window and noticeable rear-three-quarter blind zones (cat3 outward visibility 68).
Compact luxury hatchback with no published US tow rating and no cargo bed, but the 21.8 cu ft liftback with 40/20/40 folding rear seat expands to roughly 34–35 cu ft and takes 2x4s or ladders that would never fit through an A4 sedan's trunk aperture. Modest useful-work capability for a knowledge worker's occasional Home Depot run; nothing more.
Luxury-oriented cabin with standard leatherette, dual MMI touchscreens, and open-pore wood/aluminum trim — none of it wear-friendly for daily tool loading, and the EA888 evo5 2.0T with 48V MHEV plus is a first-year evolution with no fleet miles at scale. Audi's mid-pack projected reliability (J.D. Power 2024 VDS below industry avg) further undermines any fleet-durability case.
No cargo bed, no factory roof rails, no onboard 110V outlet, and no factory-supported upfit ecosystem beyond cosmetic Audi Genuine Accessories. The liftback tailgate and 40/20/40 folding seatback give slightly more usable loading than the A4 sedan for long items, and there is a 12V outlet plus a few tie-down hooks in the cargo area — but that is the ceiling of work provisioning.
Front seats widely praised for long-haul support (cat4 seat comfort 78), a hushed cabin (quietness 82), polished adaptive cruise assist with lane centering, and the 21.8 cu ft liftback hold that swallows four-up luggage without the sedan's aperture constraints. Held back by 385 mi combined range (14.8 gal × 26 MPG) that trails hybrid tourers, tight rear legroom, and no hands-free driving anywhere in the lineup.
quattro AWD is standard across the US A5 Sportback lineup — genuinely useful in snow and light gravel — and the 21.8 cu ft liftback swallows more adventure gear than a comparable sedan trunk. Held back by roughly 5.3 in of ground clearance, low front-bumper overhang, no US tow rating, and no factory-supported roof-rail or hitch accessories tailored to the sportback body.
The liftback body is this vehicle's genuine strength: 21.8 cu ft behind the rear seats (class-leading in cat4) expands to roughly 34–35 cu ft with the 40/20/40 seatback folded, and the wide rear-hatch aperture takes bulky boxes, bikes with the front wheel removed, and long flat-pack items that would defeat an A4 sedan's trunk lid. Held back by the absence of factory roof rails, a factory hitch, and any underfloor cargo tray.
9Driving ExperienceGrades above the middle of the scale.3.01B
New PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) is stiffer and slightly lighter than the outgoing B9 A4, and standard quattro AWD delivers strong all-weather grip with modest body roll and secure cornering composure. Chassis calibration on the volume 40 TFSI still leans toward stability and refinement over playfulness; the 362-hp S5 with adaptive dampers and torque-vectoring rear differential pulls the model-level rating upward. A step behind the BMW 3/4 Series and slightly cooler-blooded than a Genesis G70.
Progressive-ratio electric power steering is accurate and appropriately weighted across drive modes, but on-center feel is muted and there is little tactile feedback about the front tires. A classic Audi trait carried over to the new A5 platform; the S5's quicker rack sharpens response but still trails BMW's segment-best communication.
Firm, linear brake pedal with confident stops from highway speeds; instrumented 70-0 mph tests fall in the mid-160-ft range on the volume 40 TFSI, competitive with segment norms. S5's larger front rotors and stiffer pedal add fade resistance for spirited driving.
EA888 evo5 2.0T with 48V mild-hybrid pulls smoothly from ~1,500 rpm with near-imperceptible engine restarts and improved torque fill under the new MHEV+ system. Some low-speed dual-clutch shuffle on the 7-speed S tronic persists but is reduced vs the outgoing A4, and tip-in calibration is among the segment's best.
The 2.0T is audible under hard acceleration but well-muted at cruise thanks to Audi's usual sound insulation and standard acoustic glass; character is limited on the four-cylinder, though the S5's turbo V6 adds richer tone. Fewer NVH complaints than most compact luxury rivals at highway speeds.
Audi's published 38.7 ft curb-to-curb turning diameter is on the wide side of the hatchback band (34–40 ft) — a consequence of the long PPC wheelbase — noticeably worse than a Golf GTI (~35.8 ft) or Mini Cooper. Same figure across 40 TFSI, 45 TFSI, and S5 due to shared platform geometry.
Excellent sport seats with wide power adjustment range and driver-focused MMI Panoramic Display, but the new cabin drops nearly all physical HVAC controls in favor of touch-only interfaces — a regression from the outgoing A4 that reviewers consistently flag. Sportback's liftback profile improves rear three-quarter visibility slightly vs the A4 sedan.
Sportback body and new PPC platform give the A5 a slightly more emotional character than the outgoing A4 sedan, and the 362-hp S5 has drawn strong reviews as a legitimate sport-hatch alternative to a BMW M340i. Volume 40 TFSI trims stay on the mature and competent side rather than the take-the-long-way-home end of the segment.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the A5 Sportback's strongest categories.3.09B
Base Premium bundles Quattro AWD, MMI Panoramic display (11.9-inch cluster + 14.5-inch touchscreen), wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, LED headlights, 3-zone climate, and Audi phone box — competitive kit, but sunroof, adaptive cruise, and heated seats often bundled into option packages or reserved for Premium Plus.
Starting near $47K with standard AWD is fair for the compact luxury segment, but rivals like Genesis G70 undercut on price with more standard kit; Audi's premium content-per-dollar is respectable but not a bargain versus the class.
Three main trims — Premium, Premium Plus, Prestige — plus the S5 Sportback performance variant, with S line exterior/interior options. Good spacing between trims though the base sits at a relatively high entry point.
The A4/A5 line has been a steady mid-pack seller in US compact luxury but consistently trails the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class; strong Audi customer loyalty but not a segment volume leader.
Audi is a genuinely aspirational luxury brand with strong design and interior reputation; the four-ring badge carries real image weight in the US market, just a half-step below BMW/Mercedes in brand halo.
As an all-new redesign in its first full model year, incentives are limited; some lease-support programs typical for Audi but no aggressive cash-on-hood typical for the launch phase of a redesigned premium model.
All-new generation on Audi's new PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) architecture with new MMI Panoramic display, redesigned cabin, and updated 2.0T powertrain; among the freshest offerings in the compact luxury segment.
Early reviews praise the interior quality, tech integration, and refinement, with criticism aimed at complex infotainment ergonomics and dynamics that trail the BMW 3 Series benchmark; well-reviewed but rarely a comparison-test winner.
