The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size luxury sedan, strong on safety and held back by ownership.
The 2022 Audi A6 is a beautifully built, genuinely safe executive sedan — IIHS Top Safety Pick+, five NHTSA stars, a 12.3-inch digital cluster and 10.1-inch touchscreen standard for the first time this year, and quattro all-wheel drive on every car — for a starting price of $56,445. What it asks in return is money: EPA figures the premium-fuel bill at $2,900 a year, five-year maintenance and repairs run roughly $8,300 with nothing complimentary, and the A6 sheds about 56% of its value in five years against a 46% luxury-midsize average. That combination makes it a much better used buy today, four years on and around $32,500, than it was new. Cross-shop it against the BMW 5 Series and Genesis G80, and skip it entirely if the seven-speed dual-clutch's well-documented low-speed hesitation would grate on your commute.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Crash safety is about as good as 2022 got
- The cabin still feels like the money was spent
- quattro is standard — not a $2,000 box to tick
What holds it back
- Ownership cost is the story, and it is not a good one
- It loses value faster than its own segment does
- Premium fuel and a mild hybrid that can't do the work

1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.74C-
2022 sits mid-way through the C8 generation (2019–2024) and is a carry-over year for the powertrains — the volume US trim is the 45 TFSI quattro Premium ($55,900), whose 2.0L turbo four with 12V mild-hybrid assist makes 261 hp, with the 335-hp 3.0T V6 55 TFSI above it. That is a mid-pack entry output for a mid-size luxury sedan.
The 2.0T's 273 lb-ft arrives from just 1,600 rpm, so the A6 pulls willingly in everyday driving, but the peak figure is unremarkable against six-cylinder rivals and against the V6 A6 sitting one option box away.
Standard quattro traction and the dual-clutch's quick launch get the four-cylinder A6 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds — brisk for a car of this size, but a clear step behind the V6 version's 5.1 s and behind six-cylinder rivals.
The 2.0T with 12V mild-hybrid is quiet and smooth at cruise and the MHEV system masks stop-start restarts well, but the four-cylinder is repeatedly described as adequate rather than luxurious in a car this size, and the C8's low-speed hesitation from a standstill is a well-documented trait of this drivetrain. That keeps it in the upper-middle band rather than the top one.
The seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch shifts crisply and decisively once underway and does not hunt at speed, but its low-speed manners are this powertrain's most-cited complaint — jerky 1–2 shifts, hesitation from a standstill and shudder during parking maneuvers are characteristic of the DL382 unit in the C8.
Every US 2022 A6 is a quattro — there is no front- or rear-drive version at any trim or engine, so all-wheel drive is standard rather than an upcharge, using Audi's mature permanent quattro with a self-locking centre differential and wheel-selective torque control. No low range or terrain modes, which is right for a sedan but caps the score below the ceiling.
US buyers get two distinct mild-hybrid gas engines — the 261-hp 2.0T 45 TFSI and the 335-hp 3.0T V6 55 TFSI — plus the separately badged S6 above them, covering mainstream needs but offering nothing electrified. The 55 TFSI e plug-in hybrid sold in Europe was never federalised, so unlike a 2022 BMW 5 Series (530e PHEV) or E-Class the A6 gives a US shopper no plug-in path; notably Audi did federalise the A7 TFSI e for 2022 but not the A6.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the A6's weakest categories.0.32F
EPA rates the 2022 A6 quattro with the 2.0L turbo four at 26 MPG combined — a fair figure for a standard-AWD luxury sedan, but one MPG below the same car's 2023 rating and well short of hybridised rivals such as the Lexus ES 300h, because the 12V mild-hybrid system cannot move the car on electricity.
23 MPG city is respectable for a roughly 4,000-lb sedan with permanent quattro AWD — the 12V mild-hybrid extends stop-start and allows brief engine-off coasting — but it is well short of what a full hybrid returns in the same stop-and-go conditions, and it is the weakest of the A6's three EPA numbers relative to its segment band.
32 MPG highway reflects the C8's slippery bodywork and a tall top gear in the seven-speed dual-clutch, and is comfortably the strongest of the A6's three EPA figures — a full MPG better than the 2023 rating, and two clear of the far more powerful V6.
A 19.0-gallon tank at 26 MPG combined gives roughly 494 miles of mixed-driving range — genuinely useful touring capability that offsets the premium-fuel bill on long trips, and close to 610 miles if held at the highway rating. Confidence is MEDIUM because EPA publishes no range figure for gasoline vehicles and sources list the C8's tank as either 19.0 or 19.3 gallons (a ~494–502 mi spread on the combined figure).
EPA puts the running cost at $2,900 a year on its standard 15,000-mile, 55/45 city-highway assumptions. Decent MPG cannot rescue the figure because it is computed at premium-grade pricing, which is where the A6 loses ground to mainstream sedans returning similar economy on regular.
Both US A6 engines require premium unleaded (91 AKI) rather than merely recommending it, adding roughly 40–60¢ per gallon over regular for the life of the car. With no diesel, flex-fuel, hybrid or plug-in A6 offered in the US for 2022, there is no configuration a buyer can pick that lowers the energy bill.
3SafetyThe A6's best-graded category.3.06B
NHTSA tested the 2022 A6 sedan directly and returned the maximum 5-star overall rating, with 5 stars in both the side barrier and side pole tests and a 5-star rollover result; only the combined frontal figure drops to 4 stars (passenger-side frontal 4, driver-side 5).
The 2022 A6 sedan is an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ with Good in every crashworthiness test it was run through — small overlap front on both driver and passenger sides, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. Held just short of the ceiling because the C8 was never put through the updated side or updated moderate overlap protocols that later model years face, so the clean sweep is against the 2022-era test set.
The base Premium 45 TFSI (~$56,400) carries Audi pre sense front automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera — but adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and the top-view camera all wait for Premium Plus. Two of the five core assists being paywalled on a $56k luxury sedan is what puts this in the middle band rather than the top.
Audi pre sense earned Superior in both IIHS front crash prevention evaluations available for 2022, avoiding the collision outright in the 12 and 25 mph vehicle-to-vehicle runs and in the hardest daytime pedestrian scenarios. It is the top result the 2022 protocol could award; nighttime pedestrian testing had not yet been applied to this vehicle, so the nighttime capability is unverified.
Audi side assist pairs mirror-mounted blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and pre sense rear exit warning, and the hardware is well regarded — but none of it is on the base Premium trim, arriving only with Premium Plus, and coverage is alert-based rather than actively intervening on the volume car.
Lane departure warning is standard from the base trim, and Audi's active lane assist provides genuine lane centering above roughly 40 mph with a steady, well-damped feel by contemporary standards. The centering half of the equation is bundled into Adaptive Cruise Assist on Premium Plus, so the volume Premium buyer gets warning only.
Adaptive Cruise Assist is a genuinely integrated full-speed-range system — ACC with stop-and-go traffic jam assist and lane centering working from a standstill up to highway speeds, drawing on the C8's dense sensor array — and reviewers rate its gap-keeping and smoothness well. It loses ground only for not being standard on the base Premium and for the $2,250 package cost when bundled.
Audi offered no hands-free highway driving on the 2022 A6 in the US. Adaptive Cruise Assist and Traffic Jam Assist are explicitly hands-on systems requiring continuous steering-wheel contact, with nothing comparable to Super Cruise, BlueCruise or ProPILOT Assist 2.0 available at any trim or price.
IIHS rates the Prestige and Premium Plus headlights Good, but the volume Premium's LED projector system only Acceptable — the exact pattern the middle band describes, with the best lighting reserved for the more expensive cars. Acceptable-or-better across every trim is what let the A6 keep its TSP+ under 2022 criteria.
The C8's low beltline and large glass area give better-than-average forward and side sightlines for a modern sedan, and standard front/rear parking sensors plus a rearview camera cover the close-in gaps. The tapered rear roofline still trims the over-the-shoulder view, and the top-view surround camera that would fully compensate is not on the base Premium.
IIHS rates the 2022 A6's LATCH ease of use Good — its top rating — with two outboard positions carrying complete hardware and a third tether-only position, and the rear bench is genuinely adult-sized at 37.4 inches of legroom. Mid-size sedan bench width still makes three seats across impractical, which keeps it below the very top of the band.
4Space & ComfortOne of the A6's strongest categories.2.52C+
2022 sits mid-way through the C8 generation (2019–2024) and carries the body over unchanged, so every US A6 sedan — 45 TFSI quattro and 55 TFSI quattro alike — seats five. Quattro is standard on all of them, so the transmission tunnel leaves the centre rear position as a short-trip seat in practice.
38.0 in sits exactly mid-band for a sedan. The panoramic glass roof is standard equipment on the 2022 A6 all the way down to the Premium, so there is no higher no-sunroof figure to quote — 38.0 in is what every buyer actually gets.
41.3 in lands in the lower third of the mid-size sedan band — a long-standing C8 packaging trait rather than anything specific to 2022. Nearly 58 in of front shoulder room means the cabin feels wider than the legroom number suggests, but seat travel is merely adequate for very tall drivers.
38.1 in of rear headroom sits in the upper part of the sedan band and is a tenth more than the front measurement — the C8 roofline holds its height over the second row before it drops. It clears six-footers in back and is the strongest of the A6's five passenger-space specs.
37.4 in on a 115 in wheelbase is mid-pack for the class and slightly better than the 2022 BMW 5 Series and E-Class, but the A6 does not offer the rear sprawl of a Genesis G80. U.S. News describes the result as typical of the segment — comfortable for two adults, tight for three.
13.7 cu ft is a little below the mid-size sedan average and is the binding constraint on the A6's family and road-trip missions. U.S. News notes the space is unusually usable for its size thanks to a low lift-over lip and a deep floor, and the 40/20/40 split seatback with a centre ski pass-through extends it for long items.
Competent and conventional rather than clever: usable door bins, a lidded console cubby, a covered front tray and the 40/20/40 rear seatback with a pass-through, but U.S. News specifically calls small-item storage in the console and door bins limited. There is no underfloor bin, no reconfigurable console and no onboard household power, and the lower 8.6 in MMI display eats console real estate that rivals give over to storage.
A genuine C8 strength backed by an instrumented road test: Consumer Reports calls the 2022 A6's seats 'extremely comfortable and supportive,' and U.S. News agrees on both rows. Heated power front seats with memory and leather are standard on the base Premium, so the seats a typical 2022 buyer gets are well equipped as well as well shaped; ventilated fronts and heated rears require the Prestige.
Composed but firm, and Consumer Reports names the firmness as the specific reason the 2022 A6 misses top honours in the class — 'taut with underlying firmness but still comfortable.' The volume Premium runs steel springs; the Black Optic package, newly offered on the 45 TFSI for 2022, adds a sport suspension and 20-inch wheels that owners report makes small bumps intrude noticeably.
Wind and road noise are well suppressed — Consumer Reports simply calls the 2022 cabin quiet — but the volume 45 TFSI's four-cylinder is audible under load in a car this size, and acoustic side glass is reserved for the Prestige. That combination is what keeps it short of the segment's quietest cars.
A rich standard set at the entry point — three-zone automatic climate with rear vents, heated power front seats, leather, panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting on the $56,445 Premium. It sits below the 2023 car because the features that complete the picture (ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, four-zone climate) live on the Prestige, and for 2022 Audi dropped the 45 TFSI Prestige, so reaching them means stepping up to the $70,545 V6 car.
5Cost of OwnershipThe A6's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The entry 2022 A6 is the 261-hp 45 TFSI Premium at $56,445 including Audi's $1,045 MY2022 destination charge, and quattro AWD is standard on every A6 where the 2022 BMW 530i and Mercedes E 350 still listed rear-drive base cars. That sits far above the ceiling of the $22k-$55k sedan normalization band, so it scores zero — the band grades all sedans on one absolute scale rather than against luxury peers.
Premium Plus is the volume A6 trim and the 261-hp 45 TFSI is the volume engine — it is where Bang & Olufsen 3D audio, the head-up display and the top-view camera live, and KBB publishes its 2022 A6 valuations around the 45 TFSI Premium Plus. Adding metallic paint and one common pack — the Black Optic package became available on the four-cylinder for the first time in 2022 at $1,800 — puts real orders near $61,500.
Nothing is included on a 2022 A6 — Audi Care is a prepaid plan bought on top of the car and Audi Signature Care's included service did not arrive until MY2026 — so the owner pays from the first 10,000-mile service, and year 5 falls entirely outside the 4 yr/50,000 mi warranty. The figure sits marginally above the 2023 car's on the same drivetrains because the 2022 car's five-year window opened earlier into the post-2021 parts and dealer-labor inflation.
Real 2022 cars are four years old now and list around $32,500 retail nationally — about 54% of the ≈$60,300 volume-trim sticker, and less on a private-party basis — which puts the five-year mark in the mid-40s once another year of the curve is applied. iSeeCars' observed 44.4% is measured on this exact C8 generation; CarEdge's 51% is a forward projection. A point above the 2023 car because 2022 buyers took delivery into a market with essentially no discounting, so transaction prices tracked MSRP rather than sitting under it.
Audi's 4 yr/50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper matched BMW and Mercedes for 2022 and beats the 3 yr/36,000 mi mainstream standard, but trails Genesis and Jaguar at 5 yr/60,000 mi. Mid-band for the segment and unchanged for MY2022.
Audi dropped its separate, longer powertrain warranty from MY2020, so the 2.0T 45 TFSI or 3.0T V6 55 TFSI and the quattro driveline in a 2022 A6 are covered for exactly as long as the trim panels. That falls below the floor of the 5-10 year band this item normalizes against and is a fraction of the 10-year powertrain coverage from Hyundai, Kia and Genesis — the A6's weakest ownership metric.
No complimentary scheduled maintenance at all on a 2022 A6 — Audi Care is a prepaid plan covering the 10,000-to-40,000-mile services for roughly $699-$1,179 depending on model, and Audi Signature Care's included 3 yr/30,000 mi service did not arrive until MY2026. What is included is 4 years of unlimited-mileage Audi 24-Hour Roadside Assistance running alongside the warranty plus short Audi connect trials, so the owner pays from the very first service — behind the included-maintenance programs Genesis, Volvo, Jaguar and BMW's then-current Ultimate Care offered in this segment for 2022.
$61,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (45% retained, or about $27,675) leaves about $33,825 in depreciation. Add the projected $8,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $42,125 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.15C
Unlike a forecast, 2022 now has a realized three-year field result, and it is poor: the J.D. Power study covering exactly this model year at three years put Audi at 273 PP100 against a 202 industry average, the worst of the German three by 84 points. J.D. Power's own predicted-reliability score for the 2022 A6 is 63/100, which its scale classifies as Fair and below average, and RepairPal's quattro entry — the configuration every US A6 uses — is 2.5/5.0 at $1,056/yr. Held above the failing band because Consumer Reports still calls it about-average, the car logged zero NHTSA owner complaints, and 2022 is a mature carry-over year of the C8 rather than a first-year design.
Both year-exact study endpoints put Audi in the bottom third, and the gaps are wider for 2022 than for any adjacent model year: 239 PP100 against a 180 average at 90 days, then 273 against 202 at three years — deficits of 59 and 71 points, roughly double the 29 and 40 recorded for 2023-model-year cars. The deficit is concentrated in infotainment and electronics rather than mechanical failure, which is the only thing keeping this off the floor rather than the mid-band.
Five NHTSA campaigns is heavy activity for one model year, and three of the five carry a stall or sudden-power-loss consequence — an engine control unit whose semiconductor may short-circuit, a gateway control module that shuts down if liquid is spilled in the rear seat, and a fuel level sender that can stick and starve the engine. Nothing is structural, airbag-related or a fire risk, no crashes or injuries are recorded, owner complaints number zero, and most campaigns are VW Group-wide sweeps across many models rather than defects specific to the A6 — so this is more than typical activity but short of systemic.
The volume 45 TFSI carries its powertrain over unchanged from 2021: the 2.0L EA888 turbo four (261 hp) with the DL382 seven-speed S tronic wet-clutch DCT, quattro and a belt-driven starter-generator mild hybrid — long-serving VW Group hardware with high-mileage track records and no systemic mechanical failure pattern. Discounted below the 2023 car for the engine control unit recall that landed on this exact model year, and further for the documented maintenance liabilities of the family rather than any fragility: direct-injection carbon buildup requiring periodic walnut blasting, water pump and thermostat replacement, and the belt starter generator as an extra failure point.
Reviewers were unanimous that the 2022 cabin is a segment benchmark for material richness — plush leather, genuine wood and metal trim, substantial-feeling secondary controls — and 2022 sits at the point in the C8's life where the design was still current against BMW and Mercedes rather than aging behind them. 2022 also upgraded the Premium trim to the 10.1-inch display and added Virtual Cockpit Plus, lifting the base cabin's perceived quality. Kept out of the very top band because the glossy black trim and twin haptic screens are persistent fingerprint magnets.
Physical assembly reads as a strength — reviewers specifically call the exterior panel gaps consistent and the build quality top-notch out of the Neckarsulm line — but this item's guidance names initial-quality reports explicitly, and the study covering exactly these cars at 90 days put Audi 59 PP100 above the industry average, a wider deficit than any adjacent A6 model year. Scored below the 2023 car on that gap alone; it stays in the upper-middle band because the IQS deficit is largely screen-and-software complaints rather than build defects, and because this model year drew zero owner complaints to NHTSA.
Audi's US retail network is the smallest of the German three — roughly 314 stores against BMW's 370 and Mercedes-Benz's 387 — which leaves thinner coverage outside metro areas for a car whose problem profile is software- and electronics-heavy and therefore dealer-dependent. Service satisfaction is adequate rather than distinguishing: Audi does not appear among the premium leaders in J.D. Power's customer service index in any recent year.
Running costs are typical for a German luxury sedan — near the luxury-class average but far above the all-vehicle average — with European-premium parts pricing and most diagnostics and software work channelled through the dealer. Scored in the lower half of the normal band, and below the 2023 car, because a 2022 A6 is now unambiguously outside the 4yr/50,000-mile warranty on both time and mileage, so the mild-hybrid belt starter generator, DCT service, gateway/infotainment electronics and any carbon-cleaning fall on the owner at dealer rates, and because the quattro-specific data that describes every US A6 is the worse of RepairPal's two entries.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the A6's strongest categories.2.61C+
Making the 10.1-inch MMI navigation plus display standard on the base Premium was the headline 2022 change; previously the entry car used an 8.8-inch screen. The item measures the centre screen diagonal, and 10.1 in remains modest against 2022 rivals even though the A6 carries two screens rather than one.
MIB3 hardware makes the dual-screen MMI quick, and Consumer Reports found the layout logical once past the initial intimidation — it credits the 2022 A6 with an easy-to-use infotainment system in its summary of the car's strengths. The cost is that climate and most convenience functions live on the lower haptic screen, so the A6 asks the driver to look down for adjustments a knob would handle.
2022 is the model year Audi extended wireless Android Auto to the A6, joining wireless Apple CarPlay through the standard Audi smartphone interface, so no trim step or package is needed for either. It sits just below the top of the band because the capability arrived by software rolled out across summer and autumn of 2022, so early-build cars needed a firmware level to get it.
MMI navigation plus is standard rather than optional on every 2022 A6 — cloud-assisted destination search, Google Earth imagery and Audi connect live traffic — alongside the 'Hey Audi' natural-language assistant, and 2022 added built-in Amazon Alexa on cars with an active Audi connect subscription. It stays out of the top band because the assistant still fumbles free-form requests and most owners default to phone projection.
The Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium Sound system is a genuinely excellent upgrade and arrives on the volume Premium Plus rather than being reserved for the top trim, with the 19-speaker/1,820-watt B&O 3D Advanced system available above it on Prestige. The standard system on the base Premium is merely competent, which keeps this out of the top band.
2022 made the latest Audi virtual cockpit plus standard on the base Premium: a 12.3-inch full-HD reconfigurable cluster switchable between classic gauges and a full-screen map. It was one of the two headline MY2022 upgrades and remains a benchmark digital cluster in the class.
The C8's MIB3 head unit takes over-the-air map and infotainment content updates through the embedded Audi connect modem — the MY2022 feature additions themselves arrived as a software rollout — but vehicle control software still requires a dealer visit, and Audi's whole-vehicle OTA programme in this period covered its e-tron models. That is squarely the infotainment/maps-only middle of the band.
2022 was a real step forward on paper — myAudi gained user profiles that carry climate, locking, lighting and seat preferences between cars, plus Online Car Care maintenance alerts — but the core convenience most buyers want is missing: Audi did not fit factory remote engine start to its gasoline models until MY2024, so the 2022 A6 cannot be pre-warmed from the app, and there is no phone-as-key. Audi connect PRIME is a paid subscription after the included trial.
Two USB-C data ports up front and rear-seat USB-C charging cover the basics, and the Audi phone box adds wireless charging with signal boosting — standard from Premium Plus, or via the Convenience package on the base Premium. There is no household outlet and no high-wattage onboard power, and wireless charging costs a package or a trim step, so this lands mid-band.
Proximity entry and push-button start are standard on the base Premium rather than being a package item, and Prestige adds power soft-closing doors and a power trunk lid. It stays well out of the top band because the 2022 A6 has no phone-as-key or digital-key sharing and, unlike a MY2024-or-later Audi, no factory remote start at any price.
A rearview camera with front and rear parking sensors is standard on every 2022 A6, and the top-view surround camera arrives one step up on Premium Plus rather than being reserved for the top trim — widely available for a car in this class. Only the fact that the $56,445 base car goes without surround view keeps it below the top band.
The A6's head-up display is good — a large projected window with junction-zoom navigation guidance — but for 2022 it is Prestige-only, and Audi dropped the 45 TFSI Prestige for this model year, so the cheapest 2022 A6 with a HUD is the $70,545 V6 55 TFSI Prestige: a full engine upgrade and two trims above the volume car. Availability, not quality, is what scores here.
8Use-Case FitOne of the A6's weakest categories.1.41D
The hardware is right — IIHS rates the 2022 A6's LATCH ease of use Good, with two outboard positions carrying complete hardware — and 38.1 in of rear headroom makes seat installation less of a contortion than the sloping roofline suggests. The binding constraint is the 13.7 cu ft trunk for a stroller plus a week's gear, and sedan door apertures with a low floor mean more lifting than any crossover asks for.
The crash credentials are excellent — TOP SAFETY PICK+ with Good in every IIHS test, five stars overall from NHTSA — and 2022 made rear side airbags and direct tire-pressure monitoring standard across the range. It scores below the 2023 car because the driver aids families use most were still optional: the Premium gets AEB, lane-departure warning and parking sensors, but adaptive cruise with traffic jam assist and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert require the $60,345 Premium Plus.
Consumer Reports calls the seats extremely comfortable and supportive and the cabin quiet, and three-zone climate with rear vents is standard, so four people travel well. The limits are gear rather than people: 13.7 cu ft of trunk with all seats occupied, no rear entertainment, and heated rear seats and four-zone climate reserved for the Prestige — which for 2022 means the V6 car.
At cruise the A6 is an easy, low-fatigue car — light controls, a quiet cabin, standard parking sensors — but this item measures exactly the traffic case where the 2022 car is weakest. Consumer Reports singles out the seven-speed dual-clutch's low-speed manners as what keeps the A6 from ranking highest in its segment, with hesitation before launch or from a rolling stop, and adaptive cruise with traffic jam assist is a Premium Plus item rather than standard as it became for 2023.
26 MPG combined is genuinely good for an all-wheel-drive mid-size luxury sedan and Consumer Reports calls the A6's economy class-leading, but the mild-hybrid 2.0T requires premium fuel, so the EPA puts annual fuel spend at $2,900, and Audi consumables and dealer service rates are expensive. Cheap per mile relative to its rivals, expensive per mile in absolute terms.
A 194 in executive sedan with a turning circle near 40 ft is a handful in tight urban geometry, and thick A-pillars intrude on the forward three-quarter view even though the low beltline helps elsewhere. Standard front and rear parking sensors with a rearview camera do the compensating, but the surround-view camera that would really help costs a trim step to Premium Plus.
The A6 sedan carries no US factory tow rating — Audi neither publishes a capacity nor offers a hitch for it in this market, even though European and Australian cars are rated to roughly 2,500 kg braked — and a 13.7 cu ft sealed trunk with no bed, no payload figure and no flat load floor rules out real work duty. It is a luxury sedan and does not pretend otherwise.
Nothing about the A6 is built for abuse: leather and wood rather than washable surfaces, roughly 4 in of ground clearance, and dual-clutch and optional air-suspension hardware that is expensive to fix on a car whose brand reliability record sits below the industry average. There is no fleet or commercial history behind this nameplate to draw on.
There is essentially no work-oriented provision: no onboard household power, no factory roof rails on the sedan, no US hitch, no bed access and only basic trunk tie-downs with a 12V socket. The A6 allroad — which for 2022 adds a power tailgate, roof rails and adaptive air suspension — is the body style Audi points at gear, not this one.
This is the A6's best mission: extremely comfortable seats, a quiet cabin, and a 19.0-gallon tank at 26 MPG combined giving roughly 490 miles between stops and nearly 600 at the highway rating. It scores a step below the 2023 car because adaptive cruise with traffic jam assist was not yet standard for 2022 — the fatigue-reducing tech that defines this item costs a trim step — and the standard steel-spring ride stays firm over textured pavement.
Standard quattro all-wheel drive on every 2022 trim is a real advantage over rear-drive rivals on snow and gravel and makes the A6 a credible ski-trip car, but roughly 4 in of ground clearance, no factory roof rails on the sedan, no US tow rating and no camp power keep it firmly on pavement. Audi's own answer to this brief is the allroad.
The 40/20/40 split rear seatback with a centre ski pass-through is the right flexibility for a sedan and swallows skis or long items without giving up both rear seats, and U.S. News notes the low lift-over lip and deep floor make the trunk unusually usable. But everything still goes through a trunk aperture into 13.7 cu ft, with no roof rails, no hitch and no underfloor bin to expand it.

Standard quattro and a stiff C8 structure give the 2022 A6 far higher cornering limits than its size suggests, and Consumer Reports rates the handling agile and sporty — one of the specific attributes it names in calling the A6 among the best mid-size luxury sedans it has tested. It is composed and confident rather than playful, which is the upper-middle of this band for the segment.
Accurate and well weighted — sharp enough to place a 194-inch sedan confidently, and owners praise an almost hydraulic weighting — but the C8's electric rack sends little road texture back through the rim, and reviewers of this generation consistently describe it as precise rather than communicative. Precise enough to place the car, numb enough to stay out of the top band.
Strong and consistent: instrumented testing of this generation's 45 TFSI quattro records a stop from 60 mph in about 103 feet with linear pedal response, a genuinely good result for a 4,101 lb sedan on all-season tyres, and Consumer Reports rates the C8's braking performance a source of driver confidence. Marked MEDIUM because the instrumented figure is a generation-level result rather than a 2022-specific test.
Once rolling, the 261 hp 2.0T with 12-volt mild hybrid is smooth and the MHEV system covers stop-start restarts cleanly, with 273 lb-ft available from 1,600 rpm. The calibration falls apart at walking pace: Consumer Reports names the dual-clutch's low-speed manners as the single thing keeping the 2022 A6 from the top of its class, with the car hesitating before launch or from a rolling stop.
Well isolated at cruise with no vibration through the controls — Consumer Reports simply calls the cabin quiet — but the volume 45 TFSI's four-cylinder makes itself heard under load and lacks the V6's polish in a car of this price and size. Audible and inoffensive rather than pleasant, which is the middle of the band.
A wide circle even for a 115 in wheelbase — standard quattro and the C8's front-axle packaging cost it steering lock, and it is one of the A6's few genuinely poor everyday-usability numbers. Two independent sources agree closely for 2022, which resolves the conflict seen on other model years where some aggregators repeat an implausible 36.4 ft figure.
Power front seats with memory, a plentiful steering-wheel adjustment range and a low, well-judged driving position suit a broad range of sizes, and Consumer Reports found the twin-screen layout ultimately logical. Two things keep it below the top band: nearly all climate and convenience adjustment lives on the lower touchscreen rather than on physical controls, and U.S. News notes the driver's seat can feel a bit low.
Fast enough at 5.8 seconds to 60 mph, grippy and unflappable, but the volume 45 TFSI's character is competence rather than charisma — muted engine note, little steering feedback, and a dual-clutch that stumbles at low speed. Pleasant, not a car you take the long way home in; for 2022 the $75,845 S6 exists for that, and the newly extended Black Optic package adds only a sport suspension and 20-inch wheels, not more character.

2022 is the year the base A6 Premium stopped feeling short-changed on screens: the 10.1-inch upper MMI touch display replaced the 8.8-inch unit and the 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit Plus digital cluster became standard, with rear-seat side airbags and direct TPMS added across the line — all for a $500 increase. On top of that sit standard quattro AWD on every A6 where the 2022 BMW 530i and Mercedes E 350 still listed rear-drive base cars, plus leather, heated front seats, tri-zone climate, power moonroof, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning. Held to the competitive band rather than the top one because adaptive cruise with lane centering was still not even packaged on Premium (that arrived for 2023), and Matrix-design LED headlights, B&O 3D audio, head-up display and the top-view camera all wait for Premium Plus or the MY2024 refresh.
Fair value on paper, weaker in practice for a 2022 buyer. Standard quattro at $56,445 is real content a rear-drive 530i or E 350 charged to match, the 335-hp 3.0T V6 at a $4,400 upcharge is well priced for the output, and the 2022 screen and airbag upgrades came for only $500 more. But the ladder still climbs to $70,545 for a Prestige, the C8 cabin tech was mid-generation by 2022, the Genesis G80 handed over comparable equipment several thousand dollars lower — and unlike later model years, almost none of the sticker came back as a discount in 2022's inventory-starved market. U.S. News rates the car mid-pack for its year rather than at the top.
Five sedan configurations for 2022 — Premium and Premium Plus in either the 261-hp 45 TFSI or the 335-hp 55 TFSI, plus a V6-only Prestige — spanning roughly $56k to $71k delivered, with the S6 above them and the A6 allroad wagon alongside on the same platform. Genuinely broad and better spread than the single-engine 2026 car; the gaps are that quattro is mandatory with no cheaper front-drive entry, and the US A6 was gas-only where BMW's 5 Series family offered the 530e plug-in hybrid.
A slow seller falling fast. Audi moved 6,715 A6/S6 sedans in the US in 2022, down 30% from 9,544 in 2021 and 62% below the nameplate's 17,754-unit 2019 peak — a steeper single-year drop than the 12% it shed in 2023. Some of that is 2022's supply constraint rather than pure demand, and Audi's own US volume fell 5% that year, but the A6 fell six times as hard as the brand around it, and the A5 rather than the A6 was Audi's best-selling US passenger car. Buyers in the segment were migrating to the Q5 and Q7 crossovers.
The four rings carry genuine aspirational pull in the US — design-led, tech-forward, with quattro as a real brand asset rather than a marketing word — and the A6 sits nearer the flagship end of the range than the A4. 2022 was a flat-to-down year on supply (-5%) rather than a demand collapse, and Audi set an EV-volume record and an after-sales record in the same year. Held below the top band because Audi still trails BMW and Mercedes on outright luxury cachet and on the resale support that follows it, which is exactly where this particular car struggles.
2022 was close to the worst buyer's market in modern memory and the A6 could not escape it. Industry incentives hit a record low of 3.2% of transaction price in March and 2.8% in April, and the average luxury buyer paid $2,550 over sticker in March, rising to a record $67,050 by November — subvented lease money factors and the negotiable inventory that made the 2023 A6 a bargain simply did not exist yet. The one thing working in the buyer's favor is that the A6 was a slow seller in a shrinking segment, and Audi ended 2022 as one of the few luxury brands transacting below MSRP, so the car was gettable at sticker when hotter metal was not — enough to keep this out of the bottom band but well short of the 2023 car's run-out support.
Squarely mid-cycle and, unusually for a mid-cycle year, actually improved: 2022 is the fourth model year of the C8 generation launched for 2019, and it brought the 10.1-inch MMI display, standard Virtual Cockpit Plus and added airbags rather than a pure carry-over. A 2022 buyer was still two model years ahead of the C8 facelift and, unlike a 2023 buyer, bought before Audi went public with the plan to rename the nameplate and take the A6 electric — so redesign risk was normal mid-cycle risk, not an announced end-of-line.
Well reviewed and demonstrably safe, but not the pick of its class in 2022. Edmunds' expert team scored it 8.2/10, Consumer Reports called it among the best midsize luxury sedans it had tested, and it took IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test and Superior front-crash prevention. Kept mid-band because U.S. News places it 7.5/10 and only ninth among 2022 luxury midsize cars, The Car Connection gives 7.2/10, and there was no 10Best or NACTOY nod — comparison tests in 2022 still favored the 5 Series and E-Class. Notably weaker standing than the 2023 car, which U.S. News ranks first in the same class.
