The verdict
A strong full-size luxury sedan, strong on technology and held back by ownership.
The 2023 i7 is the launch year of BMW's electric flagship. It came only as the 536 hp, all-wheel-drive xDrive60, and it is one of the quietest, smoothest and most lavishly finished sedans on sale, with limousine rear legroom and a plush air-suspension ride. You pay for that at every step: it starts at $120,295, is projected to keep only about a third of its value after five years, and gets 318 miles of EPA range from a slow-charging 400-volt pack. Neither NHTSA nor IIHS crash-tested it. Buy it for the rear seat and the hush, ideally used or on a heavily subsidized lease, rather than for road-trip range or long-term value.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Silky, silent electric power
- A true limousine back seat
- Library-quiet, cloud-soft ride
What holds it back
- Huge price, steep depreciation
- Thirsty for an EV, with middling range
- Slow road-trip charging

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the i7's strongest categories.3.71A
MY2023 is the launch year of the G70 i7 and the US got a single version, the dual-motor xDrive60, rated at 536 hp combined. The RWD eDrive50 and the ~650 hp M70 did not arrive until MY2024.
549 lb-ft from the two electric motors is available from standstill, well above the top of the sedan band.
BMW's quoted 0–60 for the xDrive60 is 4.5 seconds, a figure independent instrumented tests beat. The manufacturer figure is used, which places it fast but well short of Model S/Air territory.
Dual-motor electric delivery is instant, silent and lag-free; launch reviews of the 2023 i7 single out its refinement as among the best of any luxury car on sale.
Single-speed reduction gear on each axle — no shifts, no hunting, no drone; power delivery is continuous and smoothly modulated.
In 2023 every US i7 is the xDrive60, so dual-motor AWD with fully variable front/rear torque distribution is standard. That's a higher score than the later years, when the RWD eDrive50 joined the lineup.
One powertrain only for MY2023: the 536 hp xDrive60. There is no lower-power, RWD or performance variant, and buyers who want gas or PHEV power have to go to the separate 7 Series nameplate (760i).
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.42C+
The launch-year i7 xDrive60 rates 89 MPGe on 19-inch wheels (about 38 kWh/100 mi), which is low in the EV band. The ~5,900 lb curb weight outweighs a slippery 0.24 Cd body.
Unusually for an EV, the i7 rates lower in the city than on the highway, because its heavy curb weight costs more in stop-and-go driving than regeneration recovers. That puts it near the bottom of the EV-sedan city band.
Steady-state cruising is the i7's best EPA cycle, helped by its 0.24 drag coefficient. It lands mid-band for EV sedans.
The 101.7 kWh usable pack gives 318 EPA miles on 19-inch wheels, a few miles more than later model years' certifications for the same trim. That is mid-pack for an EV sedan and behind the Lucid Air, Model S and EQS 450+.
The 400-volt pre-facelift architecture caps DC charging at 195 kW, which is mid-band and well short of 800V rivals. The 250 kW peak arrives only with the MY2027 facelift.
BMW quotes 34 minutes from 10% to 80%. A big pack behind a 195 kW ceiling makes a road-trip stop more than half an hour, against roughly 20 minutes for 800V competitors. Wikipedia's 28-minute figure applies to the MY2027 facelift, not this car.
The EPA energy cost is far below what a premium-fuel 760i costs to run. Graded within the EV class it is only mid-band, because the i7 uses a lot of electricity per mile.
As a pure BEV it needs no fuel-grade decision and charges cheaply overnight on 240V. The 11 kW onboard AC charger fills the pack in roughly 10–12 hours. It loses points for the CCS1-only inlet: in 2023 there was no Tesla Supercharger access, which tied road trips to the patchier CCS networks, though BMW bundled complimentary Electrify America charging.
3SafetyOne of the i7's weakest categories.2.24C
NHTSA never crash-tested the 2023 i7 xDrive60 (the launch year of the G70 generation): frontal, side and rollover sub-ratings are all "Not Tested". Per this framework's convention, 0 is the sentinel for a vehicle NHTSA never rated — the absence of a result, not a zero-star outcome. Six-figure flagships like the 7 Series, A8 and S-Class routinely go untested.
IIHS published no crashworthiness result of any kind for the 2023 i7 or its G70 7 Series twin — no small/moderate overlap, side, roof or head restraint ratings — and it appears on no Top Safety Pick list. No adverse findings either, so this is unverified rather than weak, but a $119,300 flagship ships with zero independent crash data.
The single 2023 trim (xDrive60) carries BMW's standard Active Driving Assistant: AEB with forward collision warning and pedestrian/cyclist detection, active blind-spot detection, rear and front cross-traffic warning, lane departure warning, evasion assistant, speed-limit info, Safe Exit warning and adaptive LED headlights with auto high beam. The gap is that adaptive cruise and active lane centering are not standard — they arrive only in the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package — which keeps a flagship out of the top band.
Radar-and-camera AEB with City Collision Mitigation and pedestrian/cyclist detection is standard, and the same generation of BMW's system has rated well on IIHS-tested BMWs. But IIHS never ran front crash prevention on the i7 itself, so vehicle-to-vehicle and day/night pedestrian performance are unverified — scored as capable-but-untested hardware.
Active Blind Spot Detection (with corrective steering, not just a mirror light), rear and front cross-traffic alert, and a Safe Exit function that warns of approaching cyclists before a door opens are all standard on the xDrive60. Held just short of the top band because surround-view cameras are package content.
Lane departure warning is standard, but Active Lane Keeping Assistant and true lane centering come only with the Driving Assistance Professional Package. When fitted, reviewers found BMW's centering steady and well-calibrated with no ping-ponging; the warning-only base spec is what holds the score down.
With the Driving Assistance Professional Package, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go is a refined full-speed-range system integrated with Highway Assistant, automatic lane change and emergency stop assist, and reviewers found it smooth. Docked from the top band because adaptive cruise is not standard on a $119,300 car.
BMW Highway Assistant — available on the 2023 i7 via the Driving Assistance Professional Package — allows hands-off driving on mapped divided highways up to about 85 mph with infrared driver-attention monitoring. Mature and well-reviewed, but mapped coverage at launch trailed GM Super Cruise and it is optional rather than standard.
Adaptive LED headlights with cornering light and automatic high-beam assist are standard, so no buyer gets a lesser beam; the optional Crystal Headlights with Iconic Glow are a styling upgrade. IIHS published no headlight rating for the i7, so "Good across the range" is inferred from hardware and BMW's tested models rather than measured.
Large side glass gives good sightlines, but a short rear window, high beltline and 212-inch body make the rear three-quarter view average at best; the optional 31.3-inch rear Theatre Screen blocks the rear view when lowered. Standard backup camera, parking sensors and head-up display help; surround view is package content.
Two full LATCH sets at the rear outboard positions plus a center top tether, with about 44 inches of rear legroom and very wide, power-operated rear doors that make loading a seat easy. Deeply padded seatbacks bury the lower anchors and the center position is compromised by the console/hump, so true 3-across is a stretch.
4Space & ComfortOne of the i7's strongest categories.3.87A+
The standard three-across rear bench seats five. The optional Executive Lounge Seating package replaces it with two individual reclining rear seats.
Front headroom sits near the top of the sedan band. The G70 body is shared with the ICE 7 Series and puts cabin volume first.
Front legroom is adequate but only lower-mid band for a sedan. The long body puts most of its length into the rear compartment.
Rear headroom is generous for a sedan despite the battery under the floor, helped by a taller roofline than a coupe-shaped EQS or Model S.
Every US i7 rides on the long 126.6-inch wheelbase, which gives limousine-grade rear legroom above the top of the sedan band.
The trunk is large for a sedan. There is no front trunk, unlike the Lucid Air or Tesla Model S.
Everyday storage is competitive: a deep console, wireless charging tray and decent door bins. There is no standout innovation, and the i7 has no frunk where its EV rivals do.
The 2023 i7 has heated, ventilated, massaging multi-contour front seats as standard. The optional Executive Lounge rear seat, with recline and a footrest, is widely called one of the most comfortable rear seats in any sedan.
Standard two-axle air suspension with adaptive dampers gives a plush, controlled ride that reviewers compare to Rolls-Royce. The 5,900 lb curb weight occasionally shows over sharp impacts.
A silent EV drivetrain, acoustic glass and heavy insulation make the cabin library-quiet, effectively tied with the EQS at the top of the class.
Four-zone climate, heated and ventilated massaging front seats and a heated wheel are standard on the single 2023 trim. Packages add rear ventilation and massage, heated armrests and the Executive Lounge. Remote pre-conditioning comes through the My BMW app.
5Cost of OwnershipThe i7's lowest-graded category.0.00F
For 2023 the i7 launched in the US as the xDrive60 only — the eDrive50 and M70 xDrive arrived for MY2024 — so the base price is the xDrive60's, far above the sedan band ceiling.
Every 2023 i7 is an xDrive60; dealer stock commonly carried the Executive/Luxury Rear Seat, Driving Assistance Pro and M Sport packages, landing around $128K–$135K, with fully loaded press cars well above.
No oil or ignition service, and the first 3 yr/36k mi of scheduled maintenance is included, but air suspension, 20–21" tires, brake-fluid/cabin-filter service at BMW dealer labor rates and post-warranty repair risk keep the 5-year figure high.
Flagship luxury EVs depreciate fastest of any class; 2023 i7s were heavily discounted and lease-subsidized new, and three-year-old examples already trade well under half of sticker, pointing to roughly a third retained at five years.
Standard BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty applied to the 2023 i7.
For an EV the meaningful long-term coverage is the 8-yr/100k-mi high-voltage battery warranty; the electric drive units fall under the 4-yr/50k-mi basic term.
BMW Ultimate Care covers 3 yr/36k mi of scheduled maintenance, roadside assistance runs 4 yr/unlimited miles, and 2023 i7 buyers got three years of complimentary 30-minute Electrify America DC fast-charging sessions — longer than the two years given to i4/iX buyers.
$130,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (35% retained, or about $45,500) leaves about $84,500 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $91,500 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.43C+
2023 is the launch year of the G70 i7 and Consumer Reports lists insufficient survey data (NA) for it; with no model-specific verdict, the prediction rests on a complex first-year flagship (air suspension, rear-axle steering, Theatre Screen, automatic doors) whose early recall load argues for a below-average-to-average outlook.
BMW sits mid-pack in recent Consumer Reports brand rankings and around the industry average in J.D. Power VDS — solid for a German luxury brand but well short of Lexus/Toyota.
The 2023 model year is covered by 13 NHTSA campaigns — far above typical — including high-voltage battery thermal-management software, traction-motor software that can cut drive power, a traction-battery module defect, and three separate integrated brake/ESC control-module campaigns, alongside seat, airbag, wiper and driver-monitoring-camera fixes.
The xDrive60's fifth-generation eDrive motors and ~101.7 kWh pack are shared with the iX and carry no widespread failure pattern, but as a launch-year car it took both battery thermal-software and motor-software recalls, and there is no high-mileage track record yet.
Reviewers consistently rank the i7's cabin among the best of any car: Merino leather, crystal controls, cashmere-wool options, the illuminated interaction bar and the optional 31.3-inch rear Theatre Screen.
Dingolfing assembly is tight and reviewers report no panel-fit or rattle issues, though several early-production campaigns (seat assembly, wiring, electrical) suggest launch-year assembly consistency was not flawless.
BMW's roughly 350 US dealers give broad national coverage, and 3-year/36,000-mile complimentary maintenance plus above-average luxury service satisfaction support ownership.
A low-volume flagship EV with dealer-only high-voltage, air-suspension and electronics parts, virtually no aftermarket, and BMW repair costs well above the industry average.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe i7's best-graded category.3.97A+
The standard BMW Curved Display pairs a 14.9-inch central touchscreen with a 12.3-inch cluster under one glass panel.
The 2023 car runs iDrive 8 (the QuickSelect-based iDrive 8.5 arrived later). It is fast and sharp and keeps the rotary controller, but reviewers criticize menu depth and moving climate controls onto the touchscreen.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are both standard.
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant handles natural-language commands, and native navigation includes EV route planning with charging stops and AR video guidance. It is good, though less refined than later 8.5 builds.
Harman Kardon surround audio is standard. The optional 36-speaker, 1,965 W Bowers & Wilkins Diamond system is among the best factory systems in any car.
A standard 12.3-inch full-digital cluster is crisp and configurable through My Modes, though it offers fewer layouts than Audi Virtual Cockpit.
BMW Remote Software Upgrade sends whole-vehicle OTA updates covering infotainment, driver assistance and new features. The scope is broad, but updates come less often than from Tesla or Lucid.
The My BMW app covers remote climate, lock and locate, charging control and Digital Key Plus. Some remote functions need a ConnectedDrive subscription after the trial.
USB-C ports in both rows, standard wireless charging and 12 V outlets cover device power. The optional rear Theater Screen package adds rear touch remotes and an HDMI input, but there is no household AC outlet.
Comfort Access proximity entry is standard. Digital Key Plus uses UWB for phone-as-key, and automatic doors that open and close at a touch are available.
Parking Assistant Professional is standard, with high-resolution 360° view, Reversing Assistant and remote-controlled parking from the phone.
A large full-color head-up display is standard on the single 2023 trim.
8Use-Case FitOne of the i7's weakest categories.1.98C-
Large rear doors on the long-wheelbase body, 42.8 in of rear legroom and outboard LATCH make loading kids easy. The contoured luxury rear seats and a sedan trunk opening limit stroller-and-gear logistics compared with an SUV.
Every 2023 i7 has extensive ADAS as standard (AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane keeping, blind-spot, rear cross-traffic braking, adaptive cruise), and hands-free Highway Assistant is available. Neither NHTSA nor IIHS has crash-tested the car.
Rear comfort is exceptional: limo legroom, four-zone climate, air suspension, a silent cabin and the optional 31.3-inch Theater Screen. The 17.7 cu ft trunk holds four people's luggage. The ~300-mile range adds charging stops.
Silent, instant electric response, adaptive regen, standard adaptive cruise and massaging seats make traffic effortless. The car's sheer size is the only friction.
At 89 MPGe, home charging costs a fraction of what a premium-fuel 760i does per mile, and BMW's 3-year/36k complimentary maintenance helps. The ~5,900 lb curb weight wears through expensive tires, and insurance is luxury-tier.
At 212 in long and 77 in wide it is a big city car. Integral Active Steering and standard Parking Assistant Professional (360° cameras and remote parking) make it manageable.
The i7 has no US tow rating, no bed and little payload margin beyond passengers and luggage. It is a luxury limousine, not a work tool.
Crystal, wood and fine-leather trim, air suspension and costly large-diameter tires make it a poor fit for hard use.
There is no upfit ecosystem, no work tie-downs and no AC outlets or V2L. The carpeted luxury trunk is the opposite of a work vehicle's.
As a highway companion it is superb: a quiet cabin, air suspension, massaging seats and hands-free Highway Assistant. The 318-mile EPA range and a 195 kW DC peak (34 min 10–80%) on CCS-only charging in 2023 add frequent, lengthy stops.
AWD is standard on the 2023 xDrive60, the only trim, and the air suspension can lift slightly for rough ground. Low ground clearance, no factory hitch or roof rails and the car's mass keep it on pavement.
The 17.7 cu ft trunk fits normal luggage. Long-item pass-through is limited (luxury rear seating, not a flexible folding bench), and there is no frunk, hitch or roof rails, so bulky gear is a squeeze.
9Driving ExperienceGrades above the middle of the scale.3.13B
Two-axle air suspension, adaptive dampers and rear-axle steering keep this 5,900 lb car remarkably composed, and body motions in Sport are controlled and predictable. It handles well for a limo, but it is not a sports sedan.
Steering is accurate and well weighted, especially in Sport, but reviewers consistently call it isolated with little road feedback.
Large brakes and well-blended adaptive regen give a firm, responsive pedal, and stops are short for the car's weight.
The dual-motor 536 hp drivetrain responds instantly and seamlessly, with no shift interruptions or driveline shunt. It is calm in Comfort and urgent in Sport.
It is near-silent under load, with only faint motor whine at full throttle beneath BMW's synthesized IconicSounds Electric drive sound.
Even with rear-wheel steering, the long-wheelbase flagship turns at the wide end of the sedan band.
Seat and wheel adjustment range is wide and forward sightlines are good. iDrive 8 moves climate and secondary controls into touch menus and capacitive surfaces, which reviewers criticize.
It is quick (4.5 s BMW claim) and surprisingly willing for its mass, but its character is effortless luxury rather than enthusiast reward. The sportier M70 did not arrive until MY2024.
10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.3.07B
The 2023 xDrive60 comes with dual-motor AWD, two-axle air suspension, the 14.9-inch curved iDrive 8 display, Panoramic Sky Lounge glass roof, four-zone climate, soft-close doors with automatic opening, Harman Kardon audio and heated/ventilated massaging front seats. The Bowers & Wilkins audio, the Executive Lounge rear seat, the 31.3-inch Theater Screen and Driving Assistance Pro are all options.
At ~$120K before options the i7 is priced against the EQS 580 and Lucid Air Grand Touring. It wins on cabin luxury and refinement, but its ~300-mile EPA range trails the Lucid's by a wide margin and it costs more than an EQS 450+. Fair value at flagship prices, not a bargain.
For 2023 there is one trim: the xDrive60. The cheaper RWD eDrive50 and the M70 xDrive arrived only for MY2024, so the buyer's only choices are option packages (M Sport, Executive Lounge, Luxury Rear Seat, Driving Assistance Pro) and BMW Individual paint and trim.
The i7 sells in the low thousands per year in the US, in a narrow flagship-EV niche. It is a meaningful share of a 7 Series mix that grew on the new generation, but it is a niche model whose controversial split-headlight face limits its broader appeal.
BMW is a top-tier luxury brand, and the i7 carries the 7 Series flagship halo, which supports strong ownership pride despite the polarizing styling.
From 2023, BMW Financial Services passed the $7,500 federal commercial-EV credit through on i7 leases, and dealers discounted slow-moving flagship EV stock heavily. Lease deals well below what MSRP implies were common.
2023 is the launch year of the G70 generation, an all-new platform with current iDrive 8, Level 2+ driver-assist hardware and an all-new BEV powertrain. The mid-cycle facelift doesn't arrive until MY2027, so buyers face no near-term replacement risk.
Reviewers widely praised the cabin's silence, rear-seat luxury, ride and interior tech. The i7 earned Car and Driver Editors' Choice, and the G70 7 Series/i7 was named 2024 World Luxury Car. Its weight, range versus Lucid, and styling draw criticism, so it is respected but not a consistent comparison-test winner.
