The verdict
An honor-roll full-size luxury sedan, strong on technology and held back by ownership.
The 2025 BMW i7 is one of the quietest, smoothest and most lavishly finished sedans you can buy, with limousine rear legroom and a silent 536-hp powertrain in the volume xDrive60. The catch is cost and efficiency: the xDrive60 stickers at $125,375, is projected to lose roughly 60% of its value in five years, and its 311-mile EPA range and 195 kW charging trail the best long-range EVs. Buy it as a rolling first-class lounge, ideally on a lease, rather than as an EV road-trip champion or a sound investment.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Library-quiet, glass-smooth ride
- Effortless, silent power
- A true limousine back seat
What holds it back
- Huge price and steep depreciation
- Thirsty for an EV, with middling range
- Slow-ish road-trip charging

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the i7's strongest categories.3.77A
2025 is a carry-over year within the G70 generation (launched MY2023; facelift not until MY2027). The volume xDrive60 pairs two motors for 536 hp; the RWD eDrive50 makes 449 hp and the M70 xDrive 650 hp.
The xDrive60 makes 549 lb-ft, all of it available from a standstill. That is well above the top of the sedan band, and the M70 adds more.
BMW quotes 4.5 s for the roughly 5,900 lb xDrive60, which is quick for a full-size flagship. The trims span 5.3 s (eDrive50) to 3.5 s (M70).
Power from the dual motors arrives instantly and almost silently, with no lag. Reviewers rank it among the smoothest luxury powertrains on sale, ahead of the 760i's twin-turbo V8 for refinement.
Each axle has a single-speed reduction gear, so there are no shifts, no hunting and no drone. Power delivery is continuous.
Two of the three trims, the xDrive60 and M70, have dual-motor xDrive AWD with fully variable torque split. The base eDrive50 is RWD only, so AWD is widely available but not standard.
The i7 lineup is EV-only, with three power levels (449 / 536 / 650 hp). There is no gas, hybrid or PHEV option under this nameplate; those are sold as the 740i, 760i and 750e 7 Series.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the i7's weakest categories.2.40C+
2025 carries over the pre-facelift G70 pack (101.7 kWh usable). At 38 kWh/100 mi the roughly 5,900 lb flagship sits near the bottom of the EV band despite a slippery 0.24 Cd body.
Unusually for an EV, the i7 rates lower in the city than on the highway. Its mass costs more in stop-and-go driving than regeneration recovers.
The 0.24 Cd body makes steady cruising the i7's most efficient driving. The result is mid-band for EV sedans.
The 101.7 kWh usable pack gives the volume xDrive60 311 EPA miles. That is mid-pack for an EV sedan and well behind the Lucid Air, Model S and EQS.
The pre-facelift 400 V architecture caps DC charging at 195 kW, which is mid-band and well short of 800 V rivals. The 250 kW peak Wikipedia cites belongs to the MY2027 facelift, not this car.
This is BMW's quoted 10–80% time. Behind a 195 kW ceiling the large pack averages about 130–140 kW, so a stop takes a half hour or more. Wikipedia's 28 min is the MY2027 facelift figure.
This is EPA's energy cost at 15,000 mi/yr. It is far below the 760i's fuel bill, but only mid-band within the EV class because 38 kWh/100 mi is a lot of electricity per mile.
As a pure BEV there is no fuel grade to choose, and home charging is cheap: 11 kW AC fills the pack overnight, and a Flexible Fast Charger for 120/240 V comes with the car. It falls short of the top because the 2025 car uses a CCS1 inlet (Superchargers only via adapter), and DC sessions on a 38 kWh/100 mi car are costly.
3SafetyGrades near the top of the scale.3.53A-
NHTSA has not crash-tested the G70 i7 / 7 Series (low-volume flagship) and it is absent from the MY2025 NCAP test list; a 4.5-star estimate is applied consistent with how other untested full-size luxury sedans are handled in this catalog.
The 2025 i7 earned no IIHS Top Safety Pick or TSP+ (only the 2025 X3 and X5 did among BMWs), and IIHS has not published a full crashworthiness slate for the G70 sedan. BMW's rigid structure and tested siblings suggest Good-level crash protection, but without results it cannot be credited in the award band.
Every 2025 i7 (eDrive50, xDrive60, M70 xDrive) comes standard with Driving Assistance Professional-level hardware basics: AEB with pedestrian/cyclist detection, lane departure warning and lane keeping, Active Blind Spot Detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go. Only the hands-free Highway Assistant is an option.
BMW's Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation covers vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists with day and night operation and junction/turn assist, and reviewers report smooth, well-calibrated interventions. No IIHS front-crash-prevention rating exists for the i7, so it stays below the top of the band.
Active Blind Spot Detection with steering intervention, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert with braking and exit warning are standard on all 2025 i7 trims — class-leading coverage with active intervention.
Lane keeping is standard and the Steering and Lane Control Assistant centers smoothly with little ping-ponging, one of the better-calibrated systems in the luxury segment per reviewers.
Standard full-speed Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go brakes smoothly and resumes promptly; paired with the optional Highway Assistant it forms a refined, well-integrated highway assist package.
Highway Assistant, available on the 2025 i7 via the Driving Assistance Professional Package, allows hands-free driving up to 85 mph on mapped divided highways with camera driver monitoring and Active Lane Change; coverage is competitive with BlueCruise, slightly behind Super Cruise's network.
Adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams are standard across the 2025 i7 range, with upgraded crystal split headlights available; there is no IIHS headlight rating on file, so credit rests on hardware and reviewer reports.
Thick C/D-pillars and a high beltline limit rear-quarter sightlines, but Parking Assistant Professional surround view, 3D view and Back-Up Assistant compensate well; reviewers rate visibility average for the class with excellent camera support.
Long-wheelbase rear quarters (about 43–44 in legroom) and large rear doors make rear-facing seats easy to load, with LATCH anchors in both outboard positions; anchors sit in recessed covers that take some digging and three-across is tight with the contoured outboard seats.
4Space & ComfortOne of the i7's strongest categories.3.95A+
The 2025 model year carries over the G70 generation, which launched for MY2023 and gets its facelift for MY2027. The volume xDrive60 seats five.
Front headroom is generous for a sedan and matches the gas 7 Series, since both share the G70 body.
On paper the front legroom is average for a sedan. The flagship's extra length goes mostly to the rear seat.
There is ample rear headroom under the standard Sky Lounge panoramic roof, and the floor-mounted battery does not crowd rear occupants vertically.
On the 126.6-inch long wheelbase the rear legroom is limousine-like, slightly below the 740i's 43.3 inches because of the battery floor.
The trunk is large by sedan standards but gives up about 1.4 cu ft to the gas 7 Series because of EV packaging. There is no frunk.
Everyday storage is solid: console bin, door pockets, wireless pad and rear-door touchscreens, plus an optional rear Travel & Comfort tablet holder and folding table. It is a lounge rather than a clever storage design, and there is no front trunk.
For 2025 the xDrive60 makes front massage seats and the Luxury Rear Seating Package standard, which adds ventilated, massaging rear seats. Reviewers rank the seats among the best long-haul seats available, front and rear.
The standard two-axle air suspension and the heavy, low-slung battery give a glassy, isolated ride. Edmunds rates the i7 smoother than the gas 7 Series and on par with the S-Class.
With no engine, plus acoustic glazing and heavy insulation, the cabin is library-quiet. Reviewers call it among the quietest cars they have tested.
Standard equipment includes four-zone climate, heated front and rear seats, a heated wheel, the Sky Lounge panoramic roof and remote pre-conditioning. On the 2025 xDrive60, ventilated and massaging seats are standard in both rows.
5Cost of OwnershipThe i7's lowest-graded category.0.00F
2025 entry i7 is the RWD eDrive50, which gains a standard fixed-pane panoramic LED roof for MY2025. Far above the sedan band ceiling.
The dual-motor AWD xDrive60 is the representative volume configuration; for 2025 it absorbs the Luxury Rear Seating Package and massaging front/rear seats as standard, which raised its sticker versus 2024.
As a BEV the i7 skips oil, spark-plug and exhaust service, and BMW Ultimate Care covers the first 3 yr/36k mi of scheduled maintenance; the main costs are large staggered tires, brake fluid and cabin filters, with a modest repair allowance on top.
Full-size luxury EVs lose value steeply. The forecasts disagree, so a midpoint toward the conservative end is used: KBB's residual implies roughly 39%, CarEdge forecasts 45% and iSeeCars transaction data shows only 26%.
Standard BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty, sitting mid-band among luxury rivals.
For an EV the high-voltage battery warranty is the relevant long-term powertrain coverage: 8 yr / 100k mi. The electric drive unit itself falls under the 4-yr basic term.
BMW Ultimate Care provides 3 yr / 36k mi of scheduled maintenance, plus 4-yr unlimited-mile roadside assistance, a ConnectedDrive services trial and complimentary Electrify America DC fast-charging sessions for i7 buyers. That is a solid package, but it falls short of Genesis's longer maintenance coverage.
$125,375 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (38% retained, or about $47,643) leaves about $77,733 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $81,533 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades above the middle of the scale.2.94B-
The 2025 i7 is a carry-over year of the G70 generation (launched MY2023, facelift not until MY2027), and predicted-reliability signals sit around average: J.D. Power rates the closely related 2025 7 Series well, while BMW's brand-level CR prediction is mid-pack and the i7's dense electronics (air suspension, rear-axle steering, Theatre Screen) temper the EV drivetrain's simplicity.
BMW lands mid-pack in Consumer Reports brand rankings and around or below average in J.D. Power studies — solid for a European luxury brand but well short of Lexus/Toyota-tier consistency.
The 2025 i7 carries a handful of campaigns — an electric drive motor software update (OTA/dealer), an A/C wiring harness inspection shared across 5/7 Series, plus generation-level steering and tiny-population battery-module recalls — typical first-generation luxury EV activity, with nothing fire-related or systemic.
The Gen5 eDrive motors and ~101.7 kWh battery are shared with the iX/i5 and have no widespread failure pattern, though the 2025 drive-motor software recall and limited high-mileage history keep it out of the proven tier.
A class benchmark cabin: crystal controls, Merino leather, cashmere-wool upholstery option, illuminated Interaction Bar and the optional 31.3-inch rear Theatre Screen, consistently praised as among the finest interiors on sale.
Built alongside the 7 Series at BMW's Dingolfing flagship plant with tight panel gaps and a hushed, rattle-free cabin; owner complaints center on software glitches rather than assembly.
Roughly 350 US BMW centers give broad coverage, backed by complimentary Ultimate Care maintenance (3 yr/36k mi) and above-average luxury service satisfaction.
A low-volume flagship EV with dealer-only high-voltage and air-suspension parts, little aftermarket support and high collision-repair costs; BMW's average repair costs run well above the industry.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe i7's best-graded category.4.00A+
Every 2025 i7 has the Curved Display: a 12.3-inch cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen under one pane of glass. The 31.3-inch Theater Screen is optional for the rear.
iDrive 8.5 is fast and graphically rich, and the rotary controller is retained. Climate controls moved to the touchscreen and capacitive strips draw some criticism.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every i7 trim.
Standard equipment includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant natural-language voice control and BMW Maps with cloud routing, AR navigation and charger-aware route planning.
The standard Bowers & Wilkins Surround system is strong, and the 36-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond system with Dolby Atmos is a class benchmark.
The 12.3-inch configurable digital cluster is standard and shows EV-specific displays, though there are fewer layouts than in Mercedes' or Audi's clusters.
BMW Remote Software Upgrade updates vehicle systems over the air, not just maps. In the US, Highway Assistant gained hands-free operation through software.
The My BMW app covers remote climate and pre-conditioning, lock and locate, Remote 3D View, charging schedules and Digital Key Plus with UWB.
There are USB-C ports in front and rear and wireless charging, but no household AC outlet or vehicle-to-load capability.
Comfort Access proximity entry and the soft-close power trunk are standard, UWB Digital Key Plus is supported, and automatic power-opening doors are available.
A surround-view camera and automated parking are standard on the i7. Parking Assistant Professional adds remote and trained parking.
A full-colour head-up display is standard on every i7.
8Use-Case FitOne of the i7's weakest categories.1.61D
Long rear doors and 42.8 inches of rear legroom make child seats easy to fit, and the 17.7 cu ft trunk takes a stroller. Even so, a $100k+ sedan with delicate leather, power doors and no hatch is not a natural family logistics tool.
A full ADAS suite is standard: AEB, blind-spot, lane-keeping, surround view and adaptive cruise. The i7, like most flagships, has not been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS.
Rear occupants get ventilated massage seats, which are standard on the 2025 xDrive60, plus door touchscreens, four-zone climate and an optional 31-inch Theater Screen in an exceptionally quiet, smooth cabin. Range and the trunk are the limits.
Silent, calmly calibrated power, well-blended regen and adaptive B-mode make traffic effortless. Hands-free Highway Assistant reduces fatigue, and the car's size is the only drawback.
Electricity is cheap per mile at about $850 a year in EPA energy cost, but this is a 5,900-lb luxury car with expensive tires and insurance.
At 212 inches long and 77 inches wide with a 40.4-ft turning circle, it is unwieldy in the city. The standard surround view, automated parking and optional rear-wheel steering mitigate this but do not cure it.
The i7 has no US tow rating and a sedan trunk. It is not a work vehicle.
This is a chauffeur-grade luxury interior with complex air suspension and electronics, entirely unsuited to hard use.
There are no tie-downs, no onboard AC power or V2L, no hitch and no upfit ecosystem.
As a mile-eater it is superb on comfort, quiet and hands-free highway assist. The roughly 300-mile range and 195 kW peak DC charging (about 34 minutes for 10–80%) bring more stops than the best long-range rivals.
xDrive AWD and air suspension cope with gravel and snow. There is no US tow rating, roof-rack provision or V2L, and the low sedan body is pavement-bound.
The 17.7 cu ft trunk takes four suitcases, but there is no frunk, no hitch, no roof rails and only limited pass-through, so bulky gear is a squeeze.
9Driving ExperienceGrades above the middle of the scale.2.96B-
A low battery centre of gravity, active anti-roll and optional rear-wheel steering keep about 5,975 lb composed. The car feels secure rather than agile, and its mass is always evident.
The steering is precise and well weighted for a limousine but largely numb. That is typical of the G70 platform.
Reviewers single out the progressive pedal and seamless regen-to-friction blending. No 2025 instrumented 70–0 figure was found.
Calm, linear dual-motor delivery is calibrated for limousine smoothness, and there are no shifts.
The electric drive is near-silent, with optional IconicSounds by Hans Zimmer. There is no vibration through the controls.
The 126.6-inch wheelbase gives a large turning circle, just beyond the sedan band. Rear-wheel steering is optional.
Seats and wheel adjust extensively and the driving position is commanding. The touch-based climate controls and the crystal interaction bar draw criticism, and thick rear pillars hurt over-the-shoulder vision.
Silent 536-hp thrust (4.5 s to 60 mph) is a delight, but the i7 is tuned for serenity, not engagement. It is enjoyable, not an enthusiast's car.
10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.3.18B
Even the 2025 eDrive50 comes with adaptive air suspension, rear-wheel steering, soft-close doors, ventilated front seats, heated front and rear seats, four-zone climate, the 14.9-inch Curved Display, Bowers & Wilkins audio and (new for 2025) the panoramic LED roof. The xDrive60 also makes massaging front and rear seats and the Luxury Rear Seating Package standard for 2025.
At $106,875–$169,675 the i7 delivers flagship craftsmanship and a richer standard specification than in 2024. However, the xDrive60's $125K sticker sits above the Mercedes EQS 450+, and the Lucid Air offers more range for less. The value is fair, but not a standout.
Three trims cover a wide performance and price spread: eDrive50 (RWD), xDrive60 (dual-motor AWD) and M70 xDrive (650 hp). BMW Individual paint and trim plus option packages add flexibility, although more 2025 content became standard and there is a $19K gap between the first two trims.
Full-size luxury EV sedans are a niche segment. The i7 sells in the low thousands per year in the US, reported only within combined 7 Series/i7 totals, and its polarizing split-headlight styling limits wider appeal. Even so, it has held up better than the EQS Sedan.
BMW is a top-tier global luxury brand, and the i7 carries the 7 Series flagship halo. The brand's weak residuals on large luxury sedans are the main thing holding this score back.
BMW Financial Services offered a $7,500 lease bonus and lender offer on the 2025 i7, which was still running in mid-2026. Loyalty and military add-ons were available on top, and summer 2025 lease specials were promoted, so buyers routinely paid well below sticker.
MY2025 is the third year of the G70 generation, which launched for MY2023. The platform and iDrive tech are still current, but the April 2026 facelift for MY2027 means a 2025 buyer is mid-cycle and one refresh away from dated.
Reviewers consistently praise the i7's silence, ride, rear-seat luxury and build quality, and it earns strong review ratings. Its weight, styling and range trailing the Lucid Air keep it from routinely winning comparison tests.
