The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size luxury suv, strong on technology and held back by ownership.

The 2024 X6 is a mid-cycle-refreshed BMW X5 wearing a fastback roof, and that trade is the whole story: you get a superb 375-hp mild-hybrid inline-six, a sharper chassis than the X5's, and one of the best cabins and screens in the class, but you give up 6.5 cu ft of cargo space, 2 in of rear headroom and a clear view out the back — and you pay $6,400 extra for the privilege. It is genuinely quick, quiet and effortless over long distances, with a 21.9-gallon tank good for roughly 526 miles between fills and 7,200 lbs of towing. What sinks it on paper is cost: $74,895 to start, premium fuel required at about $3,150 a year, only a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty with no separate powertrain term, and roughly $48,500 gone to depreciation and upkeep over five years. Buy it because you want this shape; there is no rational case for it over the X5.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainGrades above the middle of the scale.2.80B-
Horsepower
375 hp (xDrive40i, 3.0L B58 turbo I6 + 48V mild hybrid); 523 hp (M60i xDrive); 617 hp (X6 M Competition)
56/100
#10 of 62 in classCompare all →

2024 is a change year, not a carry-over: the G06 LCI facelift replaced the previous 335 hp B58 in the volume xDrive40i with a 48V mild-hybrid version making 375 hp, matching the corresponding X5 with which the X6 shares its Spartanburg-built platform.

Torque
398 lb-ft (xDrive40i, with full 48V assist; 383 lb-ft engine-only); 553 lb-ft (M60i xDrive and X6 M Competition)
72/100
#14 of 62 in classCompare all →

The B58 makes 383 lb-ft (519 Nm) on its own and 398 lb-ft with the 48V electric assist folded in — BMW's US build data and every dealer spec sheet quote the 398 lb-ft figure at 1,850–5,000 rpm, so that is the value used here (and the same one used for the mechanically identical 2024 X5).

0–60 mph time
5.2 s (xDrive40i, BMW estimate; instrumented tests 4.4–4.7 s); 4.2 s (M60i xDrive); 3.7 s (X6 M Competition)
72/100
#5 of 62 in classCompare all →

BMW's conservative 5.2-second claim for the xDrive40i is used as the value per the manufacturer-first rule; independent instrumented runs are substantially quicker, so the real-world figure is better than the score implies.

Powertrain refinement90
#1 of 62 in classCompare all →

The B58 inline-six is a benchmark engine for smoothness, and the 2024 LCI's 48V mild-hybrid system both fills low-rpm torque and smooths the auto stop/start that was the drivetrain's one coarse note. Reviewers describe delivery as effectively lag-free.

Transmission behavior88
#4 of 62 in classCompare all →

The ZF-based 8-speed Steptronic is standard across the range and is the segment reference for shift speed and gear-selection logic; the LCI swapped the console lever for a toggle without changing the calibration. It hunts rarely and downshifts decisively in Sport.

Max towing capacity
7,200 lbs with the factory-installed trailer hitch (same rating on xDrive40i and M60i xDrive)
89/100
#10 of 62 in classCompare all →

Strong for a mid-size luxury SUV and identical to the X5 it shares a platform with — the sloping roofline costs cargo space, not tow rating.

AWD/4WD availability80
#28 of 62 in classCompare all →

Every 2024 X6 is xDrive — there is no rear-drive sDrive40i as there is on the X5 — and the system is a rear-biased, fully variable setup with an optional M Sport rear differential for torque vectoring. It stops short of the top band because there is no low range and no terrain-mode suite.

Off-road capability30
#42 of 62 in classCompare all →

The X6 is the pavement-biased half of the X5/X6 pair: 8.1 in of ground clearance, a coupe roofline, large-diameter wheels on low-profile performance tires, and no off-road hardware. The xOffroad Package that gives the X5 a locking rear differential and terrain modes was never offered on the X6.

Powertrain lineup breadth55
#21 of 62 in classCompare all →

Three distinct gas powertrains — 375 hp mild-hybrid I6, 523 hp mild-hybrid V8, 617 hp M V8 — cover mainstream through performance, but there is no electrified option in the sense buyers mean: unlike the 2024 X5, the X6 gets no xDrive50e plug-in hybrid and no EV variant.

2Efficiency & RangeOne of the X6's weakest categories.1.24D
Combined fuel economy
24 MPG combined (xDrive40i); 19 MPG (M60i xDrive); 15 MPG (X6 M Competition)
47/100
#26 of 62 in classCompare all →

Respectable for a 375 hp all-wheel-drive luxury SUV and up on the pre-LCI car thanks to the 48V mild hybrid, but graded against all gas SUVs it lands just below the segment median — it is a six-cylinder performance vehicle, not an economy pick.

City fuel economy
23 MPG city (xDrive40i); 17 MPG (M60i xDrive); 13 MPG (X6 M Competition)
56/100
#25 of 62 in classCompare all →

The 48V system's engine-off coasting and smoothed stop/start help the city figure, which is the stronger half of the X6's EPA pair and matches the X5 exactly.

Highway fuel economy
26 MPG highway (xDrive40i); 22 MPG (M60i xDrive); 18 MPG (X6 M Competition)
38/100
#41 of 62 in classCompare all →

The weakest of the three EPA figures relative to the gas-SUV band, and 1 MPG behind the X5 despite the lower roofline — wide performance tires and the X6's larger standard wheels cost more than the body shape recovers.

Driving range
~526 mi (xDrive40i, 21.9 gal × 24 MPG combined); ~416 mi (M60i xDrive); ~329 mi (X6 M Competition)
77/100
#4 of 62 in classCompare all →

A large 21.9-gallon tank turns a mid-pack MPG figure into genuinely long legs — over 500 miles between fills makes the X6 a strong road-trip vehicle despite the premium-fuel bill.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$3,150/yr (xDrive40i, EPA 15,000 mi/yr on premium); $4,000/yr (M60i xDrive); $5,050/yr (X6 M Competition)
19/100
#49 of 62 in classCompare all →

Near the expensive end of the gas-SUV band: the combined-MPG figure is only slightly below average, but the mandatory premium grade is what pushes the annual bill toward the top of the range.

Fuel requirements30
#53 of 62 in classCompare all →

Premium unleaded is required, not merely recommended, on every 2024 X6 EPA entry — a standing cost penalty of roughly 50–70 cents per gallon over regular with no lower-grade fallback offered.

3SafetyGrades above the middle of the scale.2.72B-
NHTSA overall rating
Not rated by NHTSA (X5 platform-mate: 4 stars overall)
50/100
#39 of 62 in classCompare all →

NHTSA lists the 2024 X6 but published no crash results at all — every rating field returns Not Rated. Estimated at 4 stars from its directly-tested G05 X5 platform-mate, which earned 4 stars overall for 2024 (dragged down by a 4-star frontal result), not the 5 stars a shared-structure assumption would suggest.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness70
#22 of 62 in classCompare all →

Every IIHS test the 2024 X6 has been through came back Good, but the coverage is thin — only small overlap front and the ORIGINAL moderate overlap test were run, with no updated moderate overlap (rear-passenger), no side test and no roof strength result, so the X6 earned no Top Safety Pick award for 2024 while the X3, X1, X2 and 5 Series all did.

Standard ADAS suite breadth74
#40 of 62 in classCompare all →

The LCI arrived with a broad standard set on the volume xDrive40i — Active Driving Assistant bundles frontal collision warning with city collision mitigation, blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic and exit warning, plus standard rear automatic braking and Parking Assistant. Adaptive cruise is the notable hole: Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go sits behind the $2,100 Driving Assistance Professional package rather than being standard on a $73,900 SUV.

Automatic emergency braking performance84
#13 of 62 in classCompare all →

The X6 takes the top rating in both front crash prevention evaluations, including the tougher updated vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test that added higher speeds and motorcycle/semitrailer targets. Held just below the top band because IIHS publishes no separate day/night pedestrian breakdown for this vehicle.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage82
#8 of 62 in classCompare all →

Blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and exit warning are all standard, and rear automatic braking adds active intervention rather than alert-only coverage; front cross-traffic alert comes with the Professional package. No trailer-aware coverage, and this equipment is doing more work than usual here given the coupe roof's oversized over-shoulder blind zone.

Lane keeping & centering76
#8 of 62 in classCompare all →

Lane departure warning is standard but active prevention is not — Active Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision avoidance, lane centering and automatic lane change all live in the optional Driving Assistance Professional package. Optioned up, the centering is among the smoother systems reviewers test; left standard, the buyer gets warnings only.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist82
#5 of 62 in classCompare all →

Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go is refined full-speed-range hardware and integrates cleanly with the LCI's new Highway Assistant and Traffic Jam Assistant, which is genuinely strong highway behavior. Marked down only because it is a $2,100 option rather than standard equipment on the volume trim.

Hands-free driving availability70
#10 of 62 in classCompare all →

2024 is the year Highway Assistant arrived on the X5/X6 — hands-off driving up to 85 mph on limited-access highways with camera-based eye tracking to confirm driver attention. Genuinely hands-free and a first for the nameplate, but the approved-road map is narrower than GM Super Cruise or Ford BlueCruise, and Active Lane Change with eye activation only joined the feature from April 2024 production, so early-build 2024 cars are less capable than late ones.

Headlight performance54
#50 of 62 in classCompare all →

The base xDrive40i's headlights are rated Marginal by IIHS — the volume configuration as it leaves the factory — and the best result anywhere in the 2024 X6 range is only Acceptable, on cars fitted with the Premium/Executive package's full LED units with cornering lights or on the M60i. No variant earns Good, which is the weakest part of an otherwise clean IIHS sheet.

Outward visibility60
#52 of 62 in classCompare all →

The sports-activity-coupe roofline is the whole point of the car and it costs visibility: tapering rear side glass, very thick rear pillars and a shallow, slit-like rear window leave large blind zones for lane changes and parking. Standard Parking Assistant with rearview camera and the widely praised available Surround View cameras compensate for maneuvering, but they do not restore the over-shoulder sightlines an X5 has.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability66
#47 of 62 in classCompare all →

Two outboard LATCH positions with top tethers and no lower anchors in the center seat, so three-across on LATCH is out. Wide rear doors and a flat floor help, but the tapering roofline cuts height above the outboard positions and makes tall rear-facing convertibles a tighter fit than in the X5 — a workable but compromised installation. IIHS publishes no LATCH ease-of-use rating for the X6.

4Space & ComfortOne of the X6's weakest categories.0.90F
Seating capacity
5 seats (no third-row option on any 2024 trim)
25/100
#22 of 62 in classCompare all →

Every 2024 X6 — xDrive40i, M60i xDrive and X6 M Competition — is a strict five-seater; the sports-activity-coupe roofline rules out the 5+2 third row the X5 does not offer either, and BMW points buyers needing more to the X7.

Front headroom
39.3 in (panoramic moonroof standard on all 2024 trims)
46/100
#49 of 62 in classCompare all →

39.3 in up front is mid-pack for a mid-size SUV, and the figure already accounts for the panoramic moonroof BMW makes standard rather than optional on the 2024 X6 — there is no higher no-sunroof number to quote.

Front legroom
40.4 in
9/100
#54 of 62 in classCompare all →

40.4 in sits barely above the mid-size SUV band's lower edge — the tight, driver-wrapped cell is a BMW signature, and Audi Q7, Mercedes GLE and Volvo XC90 all give the driver more room to stretch.

Rear headroom
37.5 in (about 2 in less than the mechanically identical X5)
38/100
#59 of 62 in classCompare all →

37.5 in of second-row headroom is the direct, measurable price of the coupe roofline: the X5 built on the same Spartanburg line and the same 117.1-in wheelbase publishes 39.8 in. Fine for average adults, close for anyone near six feet.

Rear legroom
35.7 in (X5 on the identical wheelbase: 37.4 in)
48/100
#55 of 62 in classCompare all →

The X6 gives up 1.7 in of rear legroom to the X5 despite sharing its 117.1-in wheelbase — the rear bench is moved and reshaped to clear the falling roofline, so the coupe styling costs length as well as height back there.

Third-row usability10
#46 of 62 in classCompare all →

There is no third row and no way to package one under the descending roof — the 2024 X6 is a two-row, five-seat vehicle in every trim. Scored in the low band as the framework requires for an SUV with no third row rather than omitted.

Cargo/trunk volume
27.4 cu ft behind the second row
4/100
#44 of 62 in classCompare all →

27.4 cu ft is near the bottom of the mid-size SUV band and roughly 6.5 cu ft short of the X5's 33.9 — and the shortfall is worse than the number suggests because the loss is vertical, in exactly the space a tall suitcase or a stroller needs.

Max cargo volume
59.6 cu ft with the 40/20/40 second row folded
10/100
#42 of 62 in classCompare all →

59.6 cu ft with everything folded trails the X5 by 12.7 cu ft and sits well down the segment band; the tapered rear opening caps upright loads even where the raw volume is nominally there.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions62
#24 of 62 in classCompare all →

Ordinary-good luxury-SUV provision — deep centre console, standard wireless charging tray, usable door bins and a 40/20/40 split rear bench with a ski pass-through — but nothing inventive, and unlike the X5 there is no two-piece split tailgate, only a single powered liftgate over a tapering hold.

Seat comfort82
#5 of 62 in classCompare all →

Standard sport seats in Sensafin with heating deliver soft cushioning and real lateral support, and the optional multi-contour Comfort Seats add thigh extension, adjustable bolsters and massage; the rear bench is well-shaped for two, with headroom rather than padding being what limits it.

Ride quality68
#34 of 62 in classCompare all →

The M Sport package is standard on every 2024 X6, which means Adaptive M Suspension and 20-in run-flat performance tires on the volume car — body control is excellent but reviewers consistently report a stiff-legged edge over broken pavement. The optional two-axle air suspension fixes most of it and costs extra.

Cabin quietness80
#9 of 62 in classCompare all →

Well-insulated and genuinely hushed at highway pace — the B58 is near-silent at cruise and NVH is repeatedly called low for the class. The wide staggered rear tires and shallow rear glass let a little more road noise through than in the X5.

Climate & comfort features74
#28 of 62 in classCompare all →

Heated front seats, panoramic moonroof and multi-colour ambient lighting are standard on the volume xDrive40i, but the rest of the comfort suite is a paid bundle: ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, heated armrests, the heated steering wheel and four-zone climate all live in the Climate Comfort Package, and remote engine start sits in the Premium Package.

5Cost of OwnershipThe X6's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Base MSRP
$74,895 (xDrive40i, incl. $995 destination) — no rear-drive entry trim, unlike the X5
0/100
#53 of 62 in classCompare all →

2024 is the G06 LCI facelift year and the X6 line opens at the all-wheel-drive xDrive40i, $73,900 plus the $995 destination charge for $74,895 as delivered. Because BMW does not offer the X6 in the rear-drive sDrive40i form the X5 uses as its opening price, the X6's floor sits $6,400 above its own platform-mate — far past the SUV normalization band ceiling of $65,000.

Volume-Trim Price
≈$77,445 (xDrive40i incl. destination, with the near-universal $2,550 Premium Package); press cars commonly sticker near $87,500
0/100
#50 of 62 in classCompare all →

The xDrive40i is the volume seller at $74,895 delivered, and almost no retail example leaves without the $2,550 Premium Package (head-up display, remote engine start, gesture control, Live Cockpit Professional), putting a typically-equipped car near $77,450. The rest of BMW's 2024 X6 catalog escalates quickly — Climate Comfort $1,350, Parking Assistance $800, M Sport Professional $1,650, Driving Assistance Professional $2,100, Executive $3,450 — and published as-tested figures land around $87,545. Well above the SUV band ceiling of $68,000.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
≈$7,500 over 5 years (BMW Ultimate Care absorbs scheduled service for the first 3 yr / 36k mi)
31/100
#57 of 62 in classCompare all →

CarEdge projects $6,199 in maintenance and repairs over five years for an X6 — actually a shade under its luxury-SUV average of $6,460 — but that headline understates real exposure, because the same dataset shows the curve is heavily back-loaded ($19,624 across ten years) and puts the odds of a $500-plus repair at 26.4% within five years. Landed above the CarEdge figure by the same margin used for the mechanically identical X5, with a small additional allowance for the X6's larger standard staggered run-flat tires and M Sport brake hardware, which are the bills an X5 owner does not always face.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
≈47% of MSRP retained after 5 years
23/100
#28 of 62 in classCompare all →

iSeeCars measures 50.3% five-year depreciation for the X6 — 49.7% retained, essentially dead level with the 50.1% loss posted by the luxury mid-size SUV class and slightly better than the X5's own 53.1%. CarEdge is more optimistic at 44% depreciation, but it builds that on an $89,642 average new price skewed by M60i and X6 M transactions. Settled just under the iSeeCars figure because heavily optioned examples — the ones most X6 buyers order — recover the least of that content, and both SUVs feed a lease-heavy off-lease supply.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#6 of 62 in classCompare all →

The BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, on every MY2024 BMW including the X6 — mid-band, matching Audi and Mercedes-Benz but short of Genesis and Jaguar at 5 years.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi, concurrent with basic (no separate powertrain extension)
0/100
#25 of 62 in classCompare all →

BMW grants no extended powertrain term — the B58 inline-six, its 48V mild-hybrid starter-generator, the eight-speed automatic and the xDrive driveline are all covered only for the same 4 years / 50,000 miles as the basic warranty, below the SUV band floor of 5 years and far behind Genesis (10 yr / 100k) or Lexus (6 yr / 70k). Unlike the X5 there is no plug-in X6 variant, so the 8-year / 100,000-mile federal high-voltage battery term does not apply to any version of this model.

Complimentary maintenance & perks78
#4 of 62 in classCompare all →

BMW Ultimate Care is standard on every MY2024 BMW — 3 years / 36,000 miles of factory-scheduled maintenance (oil and filter service, brake fluid, cabin and engine air filters, vehicle checks, remote software updates) — layered over 4 years of unlimited-mileage 24/7 roadside assistance, a 12-year rust perforation warranty, and BMW ConnectedDrive / Digital Premium service trials. A genuine multi-year package on par with Audi Signature Care (3 yr / 30k mi) and Genesis (3 yr / 36k mi), marked down because the exclusions — brake pads and rotors, tires, wheels, alignment, wiper blades — are exactly where an X6's bills land, and its staggered run-flat performance tires are among the most expensive wear items in the segment.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$48,546 (≈$41,046 depreciation + $7,500 maintenance)
5/100
#57 of 62 in classCompare all →

$77,445 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (47% retained, or about $36,399) leaves about $41,046 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $48,546 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the X6's strongest categories.2.94B-
Predicted reliability70
#15 of 62 in classCompare all →

Signals are decent but thin and pulled in opposite directions. J.D. Power rates the 2024 X6 84/100 for Quality & Reliability ("Great"), but that figure is explicitly the prior model year's rating carried onto a substantially updated car, and Consumer Reports has no model-specific data for the 2024 X6 at all — not enough survey samples. Against that, 2024 is the first year of the G06 LCI (new Curved Display/OS 8, uprated 48V mild-hybrid drivetrain, new integrated brake system) and first-refresh years surface teething problems, which the three-deep brake recall chain bears out; owner-reported repair frequency for the nameplate also runs worse than class norm.

Brand reliability track record78
#19 of 62 in classCompare all →

BMW's dependability standing at this model year was solidly upper-middle rather than mid-pack, and the X6 itself carried one of the awards: the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study placed BMW 9th overall and 3rd among premium brands at 190 PP100, with the X6 the highest-ranked Upper Midsize Premium SUV in its segment. Consumer Reports' brand rankings are less generous — BMW sits mid-pack there — so this is a strong finish rather than a Lexus-tier one.

Recall & TSB history55
#33 of 62 in classCompare all →

Five NHTSA campaigns on the 2024 X6, and the pattern matters more than the count: the Continental-supplied integrated brake system required three separate campaigns because each remedy failed in turn — 24V-104 replaced the IB system, 24V-739 recalled vehicles already repaired under 24V-104 because the remedy parts themselves were defective, and 26V-422 caught vehicles whose remedy was performed incorrectly. The failure mode is serious (loss of power brake assist, ABS and DSC inoperative). Two further campaigns cover incorrectly manufactured knee air bags that may not deploy. No fire or engine-failure campaign, but a three-deep repeat on a braking system is worse than typical segment activity.

Powertrain durability reputation85
#8 of 62 in classCompare all →

The volume xDrive40i runs the B58 3.0L TwinPower Turbo inline-six — reengineered for the 2024 LCI with 48V mild-hybrid assist to 375 hp / 398 lb-ft — through the ZF 8HP eight-speed. That is the most durable pairing in BMW's current lineup, with a well-documented high-mileage record (durable enough that Toyota bought it for the Supra) and none of the N63 V8's history, since the V8 appears only on the M60i and X6 M. Marked down slightly because the uprated 48V variant was new for this model year and had no long-term field history at launch.

Interior material quality87
#4 of 62 in classCompare all →

The LCI cabin, new for 2024, is a genuine strength — Sensatec standard or Vernasca/Merino leather, real metal or wood trim, broad soft-touch coverage and the new Curved Display pairing a 12.3-in cluster with a 14.9-in center screen behind one pane of glass. Reviewers rate it at the top of the mid-size luxury SUV set. The recurring complaint is the loss of physical controls: nearly all functions, climate included, moved into the touchscreen.

Fit & finish79
#6 of 62 in classCompare all →

Subjective assembly quality is up to the segment standard — built alongside the X5 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with reviewers citing tight panel gaps and luxurious finish — but the objective 2024 data is below average and this is the LCI's first year. BMW posted 206 PP100 in the 2024 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study against a 194 industry average, and two of the five recalls are manufacturing-quality defects (knee air bags not built correctly), not design ones.

Dealer & service network78
#20 of 62 in classCompare all →

Roughly 345 US BMW dealerships give dense metro coverage and workable secondary-market coverage — far better than Alfa Romeo, Jaguar or Genesis, thinner than any mainstream brand in rural areas. Service satisfaction lands around the luxury average in J.D. Power CSI studies, and BMW Ultimate Care covers scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36,000 miles alongside the 4-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle warranty.

Parts availability & repair cost57
#46 of 62 in classCompare all →

Availability is not the problem — the X6 shares nearly everything under the skin with the far higher-volume X5, so mechanical parts flow readily through the dealer network and a deep European aftermarket (FCP Euro, ECS, Turner). Cost is. RepairPal puts X6 average annual repair and maintenance at $1,206 against $652 across all vehicles, with both frequency and severity of repairs much higher than average, and the coupe-specific bodywork and rear glass are low-volume dealer-only items. BMW labor rates sit near the top of the industry.

7Technology & InfotainmentThe X6's best-graded category.3.64A-
Touchscreen size
14.9 in central display (BMW Curved Display, standard on every 2024 trim, paired with a 12.3-in cluster)
93/100
#7 of 62 in classCompare all →

2024 is the year the screen changed: the G06 LCI replaced the pre-facelift split displays with the single-pane BMW Curved Display, a 14.9-in control display fused with a 12.3-in instrument display, standard rather than optional across the range.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness76
#22 of 62 in classCompare all →

iDrive 8.5 arrived with the 2024 LCI and is fast, sharp and — unusually for 2024 — still backed by the physical rotary controller, which is a real advantage over touch-only rivals. It loses ground because the new QuickSelect home screen buries climate and vehicle settings behind an app-drawer layout that several reviewers found distracting on the move.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto92
#6 of 62 in classCompare all →

Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are both standard on the base 2024 xDrive40i, with no wired-only tier and no subscription attached to phone projection.

Voice control & native navigation82
#8 of 62 in classCompare all →

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant handles natural-language requests well with the 'Hey BMW' wake word, and the cloud-connected native navigation with augmented-reality video guidance and live traffic is good enough that owners have a reason not to default to phone maps.

Audio system quality86
#11 of 62 in classCompare all →

The standard HiFi system is competent rather than special, but the ladder above it is one of the best in the class: Harman Kardon surround sound bundled into the Premium Package, and the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround system available at the top — a genuine audiophile option most rivals cannot match.

Digital instrument cluster88
#3 of 62 in classCompare all →

A 12.3-in fully digital, configurable driver display is standard on every 2024 X6 as the left half of the Curved Display, with layouts that change by drive mode; crisp, legible and no longer a trim-walk item after the LCI.

OTA update capability82
#6 of 62 in classCompare all →

BMW Remote Software Upgrade is standard with iDrive 8.5 and covers vehicle systems and driver-assistance functions, not just map data — cars delivered in 2024 have received feature-adding drops since. Short of the top band because BMW's cadence is slower and the scope narrower than the best EV-native systems.

Companion app & remote functions84
#4 of 62 in classCompare all →

My BMW covers lock/unlock, locate, status and climate preconditioning, and BMW Digital Key Plus uses ultra-wideband so a compatible iPhone or Samsung phone unlocks the car from a pocket. Held back because remote engine start is a Premium Package item and several ConnectedDrive services revert to subscription after the trial.

Charging ports & device power76
#15 of 62 in classCompare all →

Wireless charging with signal booster is standard and USB-C is fitted front and rear, plus a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to ten devices — competitive, but the rear port count is modest and there is no 120V household outlet anywhere in the car.

Keyless & remote access86
#7 of 62 in classCompare all →

Comfort Access keyless entry with hands-free tailgate operation and push-button start are standard, and Digital Key Plus adds phone-as-key — a complete modern suite. The one gap is remote engine start, which is bundled into the Premium Package rather than fitted as standard.

Camera & parking aids74
#23 of 62 in classCompare all →

The hardware ceiling is high — Parking Assistant Professional adds Reversing Assistant that retraces up to 200 m, Maneuver Assistant that stores complex routines, and remote parking from the phone — but on the volume xDrive40i the standard fit is only Parking Assistant with a rear camera and park distance control; surround-view 3D cameras cost extra in the Parking Assistance Package. That matters more here than on most SUVs given how poor the rearward sightlines are.

Head-up display availability74
#9 of 62 in classCompare all →

The full-colour BMW Head-Up Display is large and information-rich, but on the volume xDrive40i it is an option inside the Premium Package alongside Live Cockpit Pro and gesture control — not standard equipment.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.26C
Kid & car-seat practicality62
#44 of 62 in classCompare all →

Wide rear doors and a flat floor help, but this is the least family-shaped way to buy an X5: 35.7 in of rear legroom and 37.5 in of rear headroom under a roof that slopes exactly where an adult leans in to buckle a rear-facing seat, LATCH on the two outboard positions only, and 27.4 cu ft of trunk for the stroller.

Family safety package68
#35 of 62 in classCompare all →

Active Driving Assistant is standard and the front crash prevention system earns top IIHS marks, but families lose the reassurance layer: NHTSA published no crash results at all for the 2024 X6, IIHS ran only a partial slate, the base car's headlights are rated Marginal, and lane centering lives in an optional package.

Family road-trip comfort70
#22 of 62 in classCompare all →

A quiet, well-insulated cabin, comfortable seats, standard panoramic moonroof and rear USB-C make the miles easy, and a 21.9-gal tank means fewer stops. The limits are physical: rear passengers over six feet brush the headliner, and 27.4 cu ft of trunk fills fast once four people pack for a week.

Daily driving ease74
#22 of 62 in classCompare all →

The 375 hp 48V mild-hybrid six and ZF eight-speed make traffic effortless — the 48V starter-generator smooths the stop/start that used to be the drivetrain's rough note. Two things nag daily: the standard M Sport suspension on 20-in run-flats jolts over broken city pavement, and iDrive 8.5's QuickSelect layout puts routine adjustments a menu deeper than they should be.

Commuting cost efficiency58
#25 of 62 in classCompare all →

24 MPG combined is respectable for a 375 hp all-wheel-drive luxury SUV but the fuel is premium-required, not recommended, which puts the annual bill around $3,150 — and unlike the X5 there is no xDrive50e plug-in hybrid escape hatch in the X6 body style. Run-flat performance tires are another standing consumable premium.

Parking & maneuverability52
#51 of 62 in classCompare all →

Among the harder things in the segment to place: 195.0 in long on a 41.3 ft turning circle, with a shallow slit of a rear window, thick rear pillars and a high beltline. Surround-view cameras and Parking Assistant Professional would fix much of it and both are optional on the volume xDrive40i.

Work capability68
#7 of 62 in classCompare all →

Real capacity where it is measured in pounds — 7,200 lb of tow rating with the factory hitch, the same as the X5, and a 375 hp six with torque to spare under load. What it lacks is the shape: 27.4 cu ft under a sloping tailgate is roughly a fifth less usable hauling volume than the X5's, and the hitch itself is an option.

Durability for work duty46
#35 of 62 in classCompare all →

The B58 and the Spartanburg-built G06 chassis are proven, but everything around them is style-first: leather-heavy trim, carpeted load floor, standard 20-in wheels on low-profile run-flats and prominent body panels that make a jobsite scrape expensive. Nothing about it is built for abuse.

Jobsite & upfit practicality38
#27 of 62 in classCompare all →

Basic cargo tie-downs and a 12V outlet are the whole provision — no 120V household outlet, no onboard power export, no split tailgate like the X5's, and no meaningful upfit or rack ecosystem for a roofline shaped like this one. The enclosed, carpeted hold actively resists dirty loads.

Long-distance comfort & range84
#5 of 62 in classCompare all →

This is what the X6 is genuinely best at: a hushed cabin, seats that stay comfortable for hours, ~526 miles between fills from the 21.9-gal tank, and — new for 2024 — Highway Assistant, which drives hands-free up to 85 mph on limited-access highways with camera-based attention monitoring. Only the firm ride keeps it out of the top band.

Outdoor & adventure capability58
#41 of 62 in classCompare all →

Standard xDrive all-wheel drive, 8.5 in of ground clearance and a 7,200 lb tow rating cover ski trips, gravel roads and a boat. But this is the pavement-biased half of the X5/X6 pair — 20-in low-profile run-flats, no locking differential, no terrain modes, no xOffroad package, and a roofline that makes bike and box carriers awkward.

Gear & luggage flexibility62
#38 of 62 in classCompare all →

27.4 cu ft expanding to 59.6 with the 40/20/40 bench folded, plus a ski pass-through, handles normal luggage well. Bulky gear is the problem — the volume is gone in the vertical dimension, the tailgate opening is raked, and there is no split tailgate to sit on or load over.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the X6's strongest categories.3.14B
Handling & agility84
#7 of 62 in classCompare all →

Adaptive M Suspension is standard on every 2024 X6 via the standard M Sport package, and it works — reviewers describe a car that feels considerably more hunkered down through quick corners than the X5 and shrinks around the driver as the pace rises. The Dynamic Handling Package (Adaptive M Suspension Professional with Integral Active Steering and Active Roll Stabilization) sharpens it further.

Steering feel70
#15 of 62 in classCompare all →

Accurate and consistently weighted with selectable Sport modes, and quick enough to make a 5,000 lb SUV feel alert — but the electric rack is the weak link in an otherwise sharp chassis, and multiple 2024 reviews call it dead, over-boosted or short on feedback for a car this well sorted underneath.

Braking confidence80
#4 of 62 in classCompare all →

Strong, fade-resistant stops with a firm, linear pedal on the standard M Sport brake hardware, and the 20-in performance run-flats give the system plenty to work with. Scored on the strength of the platform's instrumented record rather than a published 2024 X6 60–0 figure, which is why this is not HIGH.

Powertrain smoothness & response90
#4 of 62 in classCompare all →

2024 is the year this got better rather than merely stayed good: the LCI added a 48V mild-hybrid layer to the B58 inline-six, which fills in low-rpm torque and smooths the auto stop/start that was the drivetrain's one coarse note. Paired with the ZF-based eight-speed it is effectively lag-free and among the best-calibrated powertrains in any SUV.

Drivetrain noise & vibration88
#2 of 62 in classCompare all →

The inline-six is the reason to buy the volume trim: silky at cruise, tuneful rather than intrusive under load, and free of vibration through the controls. The M60i's V8 substitutes a deeper (partly synthesised) growl without giving up refinement.

Turning circle
41.3 ft curb-to-curb (tighter with the optional Integral Active Steering)
9/100
#58 of 62 in classCompare all →

41.3 ft is at the wide end of the mid-size SUV band — a consequence of the wide staggered performance tires the standard M Sport package brings. Integral Active Steering, part of the optional Dynamic Handling Package, turns the rear wheels and meaningfully shrinks it, but the volume car as delivered does not have it.

Driving position & ergonomics74
#21 of 62 in classCompare all →

The driver's environment itself is excellent — wide-ranging power seat and wheel adjustment, a commanding forward view, and iDrive's rotary controller still there for eyes-off-screen use. Two real deductions: the coupe roofline leaves large rearward blind zones, and iDrive 8.5's QuickSelect layout moved climate and shortcut functions into the touchscreen.

Fun-to-drive factor84
#5 of 62 in classCompare all →

One of the more genuinely entertaining ways to move five people: sharper turn-in than the X5, a superb engine, and real chassis balance — reviewers describe it as feeling like an extension of the driver despite the mass. Numb steering and 5,002 lb keep it out of the top band.

10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.47C+
Standard equipment generosity70
#29 of 62 in classCompare all →

The 2024 LCI makes the BMW Curved Display (12.3-inch cluster + 14.9-inch touchscreen) on Operating System 8, a panoramic moonroof, Sensafin sport seats, heated front seats, adaptive LED lighting, M Sport styling and Active Driving Assistant standard — and unlike the X5, the X6 also includes Harman Kardon surround audio at no cost, which is one reason it grades a notch above its platform-mate here. Still short of the top band: ventilated seats and four-zone climate sit in the $1,350 Climate Comfort Package, head-up display and remote start in the $2,550 Premium Package, and adaptive cruise with Highway Assistant in the $2,100 Driving Assistance Professional Package, so a Genesis GV80 hands over more content at the sticker.

Feature value per dollar52
#54 of 62 in classCompare all →

The X6 charges $74,895 to start against $68,495 for a mechanically identical X5 xDrive40i — a $6,400 premium that buys the buyer less: 27.4 cu ft of cargo behind the rear seats versus the X5's 33.9, a lower roof, worse rear headroom, no third-row option and no plug-in variant. The hardware underneath is genuinely good (375-hp mild-hybrid B58, 0–60 in the low fives, class-benchmark chassis and cabin), but this is explicitly a styling tax, and reviewers grade the value accordingly. Below the segment median as a result, though not in the bottom band, because the money still lands on real engineering rather than trim.

Trim & configuration breadth58
#48 of 62 in classCompare all →

Only two mainstream variants for 2024 — xDrive40i at $74,895 and the 523-hp M60i xDrive at $94,595 — plus the separate X6 M Competition above them at roughly $128,000. There is no rear-drive entry (the X5 gets sDrive40i), no plug-in hybrid (the X5's much-improved xDrive50e has no X6 counterpart) and no third-row option, so the ladder has a $20,000 gap in the middle and no low rung. The option catalog is deep in the usual BMW way — six major packages, M Sport Professional, Individual paint and trim — which keeps this out of the bottom band.

Sales popularity & market acceptance58
#41 of 62 in classCompare all →

The X6 sold 9,482 units in the US in 2024, down 5.9% year over year and well off its 13,675-unit 2022 peak — roughly 13% of the X5's 72,348. In absolute terms that is a slow seller. What keeps it mid-band rather than low is that it leads the niche it invented: the Mercedes GLE Coupe is AMG-only in the US for 2024 and opens at $89,800, and the Audi Q8 line trails Mercedes' by a wide margin, so the X6 is the volume choice among luxury coupe-SUVs and its volume is deliberately exclusive rather than unwanted.

Brand desirability & image87
#4 of 62 in classCompare all →

BMW set a US annual sales record in 2024 at 370,360 vehicles (+2.4%), and "Ultimate Driving Machine" equity still carries real weight with buyers and on the used market. The X6 itself is the car that created the sports activity coupe category in 2008 and has been copied across the industry since. Held a point under the X5 only because the bodystyle is genuinely polarizing — the same styling that draws its buyers narrows the pool.

Deals & incentive availability66
#44 of 62 in classCompare all →

Softer demand works in the buyer's favour here: with volume declining and no allocation pressure, the X6 negotiates more freely than the X5 does, and BMW Financial Services supported it with subvented APR (5.29% for 36–60 months, 5.79% for 72) and loyalty credits worth up to $2,000 to returning customers. There is still no broad national cash rebate, and demand for M60i builds holds firmer, so this is meaningful-but-ordinary buyer benefit rather than a bargain.

Model freshness78
#16 of 62 in classCompare all →

2024 is the LCI year for the G06 generation launched in July 2019 — BMW's most substantial mid-cycle update: revised grille and headlights, redesigned tail lamps, new wheels and colours, 48V mild-hybrid technology added across the gas engines (the xDrive40i gains 40 hp to 375), the Curved Display replacing the old iDrive 7 layout, a toggle gear selector, and Highway Assistant hands-free driving carried over from the 7 Series. A 2024 buyer got current cabin tech with no replacement imminent, though the platform itself dates to 2019.

Critical reception & awards68
#28 of 62 in classCompare all →

Reception splits along a predictable line — reviewers praise the drivetrain and cabin, then dock the car for the packaging it trades away. Kelley Blue Book rates it 4.7/5 and named it a top-two luxury mid-size SUV for 2024, and US News scores it in the mid-8s, but The Car Connection lands at 6.6/10, US News still ranks it mid-pack in class on a below-average value rating, and Consumer Reports declined to buy and test it at all, citing its niche position next to the far more popular X5. It also missed IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2024: crashworthiness was Good and front crash prevention Good for both vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian, but headlights rated only Acceptable to Marginal depending on trim.
