The verdict
A struggling mid-size suv, strong on reliability and held back by performance.
The 2024 Ford Edge is a comfortable, quiet, genuinely reliable two-row SUV that arrived at the end of its life — Ford stopped building it in April 2024 and there is no 2025 replacement. What you get is a roomy back seat (40.6 inches of rear legroom), standard all-wheel drive on every trim, a 12-inch SYNC 4A screen, and a 5-star NHTSA rating. What you pay for it is the problem: $38,365 to start, 24 MPG combined with no hybrid option, and depreciation of 56% over five years that is among the worst in the class. As a new car it was hard to justify; as a used buy at someone else's loss, it's a quiet, dependable family hauler for the money.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- A back seat that shames most of the class
- Quiet, composed, and easy to live with
- Better-than-average reliability from a decade-old design
What holds it back
- Depreciation is the worst thing about owning one
- No hybrid, and the gas numbers show it
- Poor headlights cost it a safety award

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Edge's lowest-graded category.0.59F
2024 is the Edge's final model year; the volume SEL trim uses the 2.0L turbo I-4 making 250 hp, with the ST's 2.7L V6 topping the range at 335 hp.
Peak torque for the volume 2.0L I-4; the ST's 2.7L twin-turbo V6 offers substantially more.
The 2.0L/8-speed AWD powertrain has been unchanged since its 2019 introduction; instrumented and Edmunds-track tests of that generation consistently land around 7.5 s, used here as the representative figure for the volume trim. The ST's 2.7L V6 is markedly quicker.
The 2.0L turbo I-4 is adequate but unremarkable, with some low-rpm turbo lag typical of the segment; the 2.7L V6 in the ST is notably smoother and stronger, but it's a low-volume trim.
The 8-speed automatic (introduced for the 2019 refresh) shaved roughly a second off 0-60 times versus the prior 6-speed but reviewers noted it is less smooth, with occasional hesitant kickdowns; the ST's 7-speed wet-clutch automatic behaves more decisively.
Max towing across the lineup is 3,500 lbs, achieved with the Class II Trailer Tow Package (standard on ST, optional on other trims); unequipped 2.0L models are limited to 1,500 lbs.
Ford's Intelligent AWD is standard across every 2024 Edge trim (no FWD-only option), with selectable drive modes (Normal/Slippery/Sand), though it lacks low-range or locking hardware — a broadly available but not especially sophisticated system.
The Edge is a unibody crossover with no off-road trim, skid plates, or low-range gearing and modest ground clearance; it's designed strictly for pavement and light-duty conditions.
Just two gas engines are offered (2.0L I-4 and 2.7L V6 on the ST) with no hybrid, PHEV, or EV variant anywhere in the lineup, in its final model year before discontinuation.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Edge's weakest categories.1.47D
Carryover 2.0L EcoBoost FWD powertrain unchanged from prior model years; combined figure derived from EPA city/highway ratings, near the bottom of the mid-size SUV field which increasingly includes hybrids.
Consistent across SE/SEL/ST-Line/Titanium trims with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine; the ST drops to 19 city with the 2.7L V6.
Highway rating is the Edge's relative strength versus its mediocre city number, consistent across the 2.0L trim lineup.
Range calculated from the 18.5-gallon fuel tank and EPA combined MPG for the volume 2.0L trim; dealer marketing materials cite up to 518 miles using the highway-only figure.
Estimated from EPA combined MPG (~23-24) at 15,000 mi/yr and EPA's assumed regular-gas price; higher than efficiency-focused rivals with hybrid options, in line with other ICE-only mid-size SUVs.
The volume 2.0L EcoBoost trims run on regular 87-octane unleaded with no premium recommendation; only the range-topping ST's 2.7L V6 recommends (not requires) 91-octane premium for peak output.
3SafetyOne of the Edge's strongest categories.2.44C+
NHTSA's full 5-star overall rating for the 2024 Edge, its final model year on an unchanged crash structure.
All performed crashworthiness tests scored Good, but the Edge did not earn a Top Safety Pick award because its standard-trim headlights rated Poor, disqualifying it despite otherwise strong structural results.
Ford Co-Pilot360 (AEB with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, auto high-beams) is standard on every 2024 Edge trim, but adaptive cruise control and lane centering require the optional Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package starting on SEL.
IIHS rated the standard front crash prevention system 'Advanced' for vehicle-to-pedestrian detection, a solid but not top-tier result one step below Superior.
Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with cross-traffic alert is standard fleet-wide, but it is alert-only with no automated braking intervention.
Standard lane-keeping assist provides basic warning/correction; true lane-centering only comes bundled with the optional Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adaptive cruise package, and reviewers describe it as functional rather than refined on this aging platform.
Optional Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds stop-and-go adaptive cruise with lane centering and evasive steering assist, but it's unavailable on the base SE trim and reviewers note nothing standout versus segment leaders in its final model year.
BlueCruise is not offered on the Edge; Ford's hands-free system was limited to Mustang Mach-E, F-150/Lightning, and Expedition through the Edge's final model year.
IIHS rated headlights Poor on most trims; only the ST with the 401A package and Titanium with the 301A package achieved the second-highest Acceptable rating.
Reviewers note thick roof pillars and modest glass area hamper sightlines; a standard rearview camera and optional 180-degree front camera partially offset the blind zones.
Full LATCH hardware (two lower-anchor sets plus a center tether) is present, but IIHS rated ease-of-use only Acceptable, citing lower anchors set too deep and tether hardware that can be confused for anchors.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.72C-
Edge is a strict two-row, 5-passenger mid-size SUV across all 2024 trims (SE, SEL, ST-Line, Titanium, ST) — no third-row option, unlike 3-row rivals such as the Explorer or Grand Highlander.
Above-average front headroom for the segment, unchanged from prior model years.
Solid, mid-pack front legroom for a mid-size two-row SUV.
Excellent rear headroom, at the top of the segment thanks to the Edge's tall, boxy roofline.
Generous second-row legroom, a Murano/Passport-rivaling strength since the Edge devotes its whole footprint to two rows.
The 2024 Edge is a strict two-row, 5-passenger mid-size SUV — no third row is offered on any trim (SE, SEL, ST-Line, Titanium, ST). Buyers wanting a third row must move up to the Explorer. Per the framework, absence of any third row anchors this near the floor.
Cargo behind the second row is on the smaller side for the mid-size SUV class, reflecting the Edge's tidier overall footprint versus 3-row-based two-row rivals.
Max cargo with seats folded is competitive for the segment, aided by the flat-folding second row.
Conventional but adequate storage — a reasonably sized console, door bins, and available underfloor storage — without any standout innovation versus rivals with giga-consoles or in-cabin power features.
Front seats are widely praised as supportive and comfortable, especially with the available heated/ventilated/adjustable-lumbar setup, but reviewers repeatedly note thin padding and flat cushions in the rear seat, holding the overall score to the middle of the segment.
Reviewers describe a steady, composed ride with underlying firmness that manages bumps well and pairs with agile, communicative handling — competitive to above-average for a mid-size two-row SUV.
Multiple reviews single out the Edge's quiet cabin at speed as a near-luxury-rivaling strength for the segment.
Heated front seats become standard starting at the SEL volume trim, with ventilated front seats reserved for Titanium and heated rear seats/heated wheel exclusive to the ST — solid but not class-leading availability since much of the feature set requires stepping up trims.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Edge's weakest categories.0.77F
2024 was the Edge's final model year before Oakville production wound down; the lineup carried over largely unchanged from 2023. SE AWD anchors the range noticeably higher than compact rivals like Escape since Ford dropped the FWD-only base configuration years ago and standardized AWD across trims.
SEL was the volume 2024 Edge configuration — adds SYNC 4 with 12-inch touchscreen, heated seats, and power liftgate over SE. Sits above mid-size rivals like Explorer XLT and Blazer RS as-equipped given the Edge's higher pricing floor.
Middle-of-pack for mid-size SUVs — the 2.0L EcoBoost four is mechanically simple and well-proven, but Ford dealer labor/parts rates and the Edge's larger size push costs slightly above compact-class averages.
Weak residuals, among the worst in the mid-size SUV class — discontinuation after 2024 and an aging platform accelerate depreciation beyond what fleet/rental exposure alone would explain. This is the single biggest ownership-cost drag on the Edge.
Ford's standard basic warranty — the floor of the mainstream segment, matching domestic and Japanese rivals but trailing Hyundai/Kia (5/60) and Mitsubishi (5/60).
Ford's standard 5/60 powertrain floor — again the segment minimum next to Hyundai/Kia's far more generous 10/100 coverage.
Ford offers no complimentary scheduled maintenance for the 2024 Edge — owners pay from the first service interval. Roadside assistance is bundled with the 3/36 basic warranty, and FordPass Connect provides a limited connected-services trial, but there's no ongoing perk beyond that.
$40,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (44% retained, or about $17,820) leaves about $22,680 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $28,980 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe Edge's best-graded category.2.54C+
As the final year of a mature, decade-long production run (Gen 2 since 2015), the 2024 Edge benefits from a well-sorted platform: Consumer Reports gave it a predicted reliability score of 68/100 (better than average) and named it among the most reliable SUVs of summer 2024, tying for the top two-row SUV spot with the Venza and Outback on overall score.
Ford ranked 13th of 22 brands (average) in Consumer Reports' 2024 reliability survey, a 4-point improvement over 2023 but still trailing every Japanese rival and Buick among domestic brands, while J.D. Power's 2024 Initial Quality Study rated Ford above average. The multi-year picture is mid-pack rather than top-tier.
The 2021-2024 Edge generation has two NHTSA recalls, both tied to the rearview camera: an APIM overheat/shutdown issue (26S09) and a separate software error causing the camera image to delay, freeze, or not display (25S49). Both are corrected via free software updates (including OTA) rather than hardware replacement, and neither touches powertrain, brakes, or steering — a light recall load for the model.
The base 2.0L EcoBoost I4 and optional 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (ST) are carried over largely unchanged from the 2015 redesign; the 2.0L has a documented history of coolant-intrusion/head-gasket issues in earlier model years (2015-2019) tied to a cylinder-cooling-channel design later revised, and both engines can need costly direct-injection fuel pump work. Against that, owner forums report plenty of 200,000+-mile examples on both engines with routine maintenance, reflecting a decade of running fixes on a mature, high-volume EcoBoost family shared across the Ford/Lincoln lineup.
Reviewers describe a simple cabin design with some padded surfaces and decent materials on higher trims (leather, ActiveX upholstery, heated/ventilated seats), but note an abundance of hard plastics that shows the design's age by its final year, and Consumer Reports specifically calls out unimpressive fit and finish for the interior.
Consumer Reports flags interior fit and finish as unimpressive for the 2024 Edge, and rear-seat padding is described as thin with flat, unsupportive cushions — signs of an aging assembly and design nearing the end of its run, though no major structural or rattle complaints surfaced beyond general fit-and-finish softness.
Ford maintains one of the largest dealer networks in the US (roughly 3,000 dealers), giving Edge owners broad, convenient access to service even as production ended in April 2024 and the model was discontinued for 2025 — the network itself is a brand-wide asset unaffected by this nameplate's retirement.
The Edge shares its platform and major components with a decade of Ford/Lincoln production (Fusion, MKX/Nautilus), giving it a deep parts pool and strong aftermarket support even freshly discontinued. RepairPal estimates a below-average annual repair cost of $611 and projects roughly $9,591 in total 10-year maintenance/repair costs, about $1,079 less than the average SUV.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Edge's strongest categories.2.33C+
Ford standardized the 12-inch SYNC 4A touchscreen across the entire 2024 Edge lineup in its final model year, replacing the smaller 8-inch unit from earlier generations.
SYNC 4A is widely regarded as one of the more responsive mainstream infotainment systems, with a clean tile-based layout and retained physical climate controls, though the Edge's aging platform means the same software feels less integrated than on newer Ford EVs.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across every 2024 Edge trim, with no wired-only or tiered restriction.
SYNC 4A offers enhanced, conversational voice recognition and available Amazon Alexa Built-in, plus Ford's cloud-connected native navigation, but navigation is an available feature rather than standard equipment, so many buyers default to phone projection.
The standard 6-speaker system is unremarkable, but the available 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen system is a genuine premium upgrade well-regarded in the segment.
The cluster uses analog gauges flanked by a pair of configurable 4.2-inch LCD screens rather than a full digital display, trailing rivals that offer a fully reconfigurable gauge cluster.
SYNC 4A supports over-the-air updates for infotainment software and maps, but the Edge's OTA scope does not extend to broader vehicle systems the way newer EV-focused Ford models do.
The FordPass app provides remote start, lock/unlock, vehicle status, and GPS locate for free, with a Wi-Fi hotspot and richer connected services requiring the optional FordPass Connect 4G hardware and ongoing subscription.
Four USB ports and an available wireless charging pad cover the basics adequately, but the Edge lacks the abundant USB-C-everywhere setups now common on newer rivals.
Intelligent Access proximity entry with push-button start is standard across the lineup, complemented by FordPass app remote start, though a hands-free power liftgate is limited to upper trims.
A rear-view camera is standard across the lineup, but the 360-degree camera system and enhanced park assist are reserved for the Titanium trim rather than being broadly available.
Ford does not offer a head-up display on any 2024 Edge trim, a notable omission versus rivals that make one available even on volume trims.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.19C
Conventional 2-row, 5-passenger layout with wide rear door openings and standard LATCH anchors makes daily car-seat installs and kid loading straightforward; generous rear legroom eases booster-seat use, though the lack of a 3rd row caps versatility versus larger family SUVs.
NHTSA rates the 2024 Edge 5 stars overall (5-star frontal, 5-star side, 4-star rollover), and Ford Co-Pilot360 (forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist) is standard on every trim including base SE — strong for the price, though IIHS has not published current-generation moderate-overlap/side ratings.
Consumer Reports and owner reviews consistently cite a quiet cabin and steady, comfortable ride over long drives, with 39.2 cu ft of cargo behind the rear seats for gear; the 2-row-only layout limits total family capacity versus 3-row mid-size rivals.
The standard 2.0L EcoBoost I4 (250 hp) paired with an 8-speed automatic delivers smooth, relaxed low-speed manners, and reviewers describe agile handling with a composed, quiet ride that keeps daily commuting fatigue-free.
EPA-rated 21/28/24 MPG city/highway/combined for the standard 2.0L AWD (19/25/21 for the 2.7L V6 ST) is average for the mid-size SUV class, trailing newer hybrid and unibody competitors on per-mile running costs.
At roughly 188 inches long the Edge is a manageable mid-size footprint for city driving and garages, with a standard rearview camera and available front/rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera helping offset its crossover bulk.
Base SE tows just 1,500 lbs; other trims reach 3,500 lbs only with the Class II Trailer Tow Package (standard on ST, optional elsewhere) — adequate for a light trailer or small boat but well short of a truck or 3-row SUV's work capacity, and there's no bed or heavy payload rating.
The Edge nameplate has a mainstream reliability track record on its long-running CD4 unibody platform, but it's positioned as a comfort/tech crossover rather than a work vehicle, with no fleet or commercial variant and no long-term hard-use data specific to 2024.
As a crossover with no bed, minimal factory tie-down provisions, and a limited work-accessory catalog compared to trucks or body-on-frame SUVs, the Edge offers little in the way of jobsite or upfit practicality beyond basic cargo tie-downs and an available roof rack.
Owners report comfortably covering 13-14 hour drives thanks to supportive seats and a quiet, composed highway ride, and standard Co-Pilot360 driver assists reduce fatigue, though 24 MPG combined and an 18-gallon tank limit range to roughly 430 miles between fill-ups.
Standard intelligent all-wheel drive helps in light snow and gravel, but the Edge's unibody crossover construction, modest ground clearance, and absence of low-range or off-road hardware make it a pavement-oriented SUV with only modest outdoor-adventure capability.
Up to 73.4 cu ft of cargo volume with the 60/40-split rear seats folded, plus an available hands-free liftgate and roof rack crossbars, give the Edge solid everyday gear-hauling flexibility even without 3rd-row seating to work around.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.08C
The CD4-platform Edge, carried over largely unchanged from its 2019 refresh through its final 2024 model year, delivers secure, flat cornering with decent grip but no real enthusiasm; the ST's stiffer tuning and 335 lb-ft V6 sharpen response somewhat without transforming the car's character.
Steering is accurate enough for the segment but light and largely numb on-center, typical of Ford's comfort-oriented EPAS tuning for this platform; the ST's slightly heavier calibration doesn't add meaningful feedback.
Pedal feel is firm and predictable with no notable fade complaints in reviews; the ST's larger rotors and calipers add reassurance for its extra power, though instrumented 60-0 distances are mid-pack for the segment.
The 2.0L EcoBoost I-4 paired with the 8-speed automatic (introduced in the 2019 refresh) is generally smooth in normal driving but reviewers noted occasional hesitant downshifts and mild turbo lag under quick throttle inputs; the 2.7L V6 ST is markedly more responsive and refined.
The 2.0L turbo-four is quiet and well-isolated at cruise but becomes coarse and vocal under hard acceleration; the 2.7L V6 in the ST is noticeably smoother and more pleasant-sounding at all engine speeds.
The Edge's turning diameter has been consistent across the 2019-2024 generation at roughly 38.7 ft, on the wider end for a mid-size two-row crossover.
A raised seating position, generous adjustment range, good outward visibility, and Ford's straightforward SYNC 4 touchscreen/control layout are consistently praised as user-friendly, with only modest thick-pillar blind spots noted.
The Edge is a competent, comfort-focused appliance rather than an engaging drive; the ST trim's extra power and firmer tuning add some enthusiast appeal but reviewers still rank it behind more dynamically tuned rivals, consistent with its final model year before discontinuation.
10Value & Market PositionGrades below the middle of the scale.1.60D
AWD is standard across all five 2024 trims (SE, SEL, ST-Line, Titanium, ST), which most mid-size SUV rivals charge extra for, and the base SE includes Ford Co-Pilot360 safety tech and an 8-inch touchscreen; but the $38,365 starting price is high for the segment and the dated interior tech (small screen, no digital gauge cluster below Titanium) tempers the value.
With no hybrid option and a decade-old platform, the Edge's content-per-dollar trails fresher rivals (Nissan Murano, Hyundai Santa Fe) at similar price points; the 250-hp turbo four is competitive but the value proposition is average rather than a standout.
Five trims (SE, SEL, ST-Line, Titanium, ST) span $38,365–$47,205 with a genuine performance variant (335-hp twin-turbo V6 ST), giving reasonable choice from value-oriented to sporty, though all share the same two-row body and AWD-only drivetrain layout.
Edge sales rebounded strongly through 2023 (106,098 units, +24% YoY) but collapsed in 2024 (52,169 units, -48.9% YoY) as Ford wound down production in April 2024 ahead of discontinuation — a mid-pack seller whose 2024 volume reflects planned phase-out rather than organic demand.
Ford is a well-established mainstream US brand with strong truck/SUV equity (Bronco, F-150), but the Edge itself carries no particular aspirational cachet within the lineup and sits in Ford's image shadow behind Explorer and Bronco.
As the final model year, the 2024 Edge carried heavy clearance incentives — up to $6,750 off in February 2024 plus low-interest financing and deferred-payment offers — giving buyers strong negotiating leverage on remaining inventory.
The second-generation Edge dates to model year 2015 with only a mid-cycle refresh in 2019, making the 2024 model a nine-year-old design; Ford ended North American production in April 2024 and confirmed no 2025 model or direct successor, the worst possible freshness signal for buyers.
The 2024 Edge earned solid but unspectacular reviews (Car Talk 9/10, US News praising ride/handling balance, Edmunds recommending the SEL trim) with no major comparison-test wins or industry awards (no 10Best/NACTOY) in its final year.
