The verdict

A struggling full-size truck, strong on space and held back by safety.

The 2017 Sierra 1500 is a used full-size pickup that still does the truck things well — up to 12,500 lbs of towing, a roomy and genuinely quiet Crew Cab, and a 5.3L V8 that any independent shop in the country can work on for about $727 a year. Where it shows its age is safety and technology: blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise were never offered at any price, the IIHS rated it Marginal in the small-overlap crash test and Acceptable-or-worse on every headlight, and the biggest screen in the range is 8 inches. Running costs bite too, at 18 MPG combined and roughly $3,450 a year in fuel. Buy it for the capability and the cheap parts, and budget for the Active Fuel Management lifter repair this engine family is known for around 70,000–85,000 miles.

Jump to scores

Strengths

  • Tows like a half-ton should
  • A Crew Cab with real room in it
  • Cheap to fix, easy to get fixed

What holds it back

  • No blind-spot monitor, no adaptive cruise — at any price
  • Five NHTSA stars, but the details are weaker
  • Thirsty, with no way out of it

    Defect

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. Defect

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Camaro, Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The fuel pump may be missing a pressure regulator, allowing for over-pressurization of the fuel system.

    Risk

Over-pressurization can crack the fuel pump and cause leaks, increasing the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source.

    Remedy

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began December 18, 2019. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267. GM's number for this recall is N192283991.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainGrades below the middle of the scale.1.61D
Horsepower
355 hp (5.3L EcoTec3 V8, volume config); range 285–420 hp (4.3L V6 / 5.3L V8 / 5.3L V8 with eAssist / 6.2L V8)
28/100
#4 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The volume 2017 Sierra 1500 — an SLE/SLT crew cab 4WD with the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 (L83) — is rated 355 hp, a carry-over figure in the fourth model year of the third-generation (K2XX) Sierra. GMC's own marketing for 2017 leans on the range-topping 6.2L instead, claiming it 'offers the most V8 horsepower in the light-duty segment' at 420 hp.

Torque
383 lb-ft (5.3L V8, volume); 305 lb-ft (4.3L V6), 460 lb-ft (6.2L V8); flex-fuel variants rated higher on E85 (330 and 416 lb-ft)
27/100
#4 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The volume 5.3L V8 peaks at 383 lb-ft at 4,100 rpm, mid-pack for a half-ton in 2017 and short of the turbocharged and diesel rivals then entering the class. The Sierra's torque leader is the 6.2L V8 at 460 lb-ft; GMC offered no light-duty diesel in the 1500 for 2017, and the guide's only Duramax columns belong to the Sierra HD.

0–60 mph time
~6.9 s (5.3L V8 4WD crew cab with the 6-speed, volume); ~5.2–5.9 s with the 6.2L V8 and 8-speed
32/100
#5 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Instrumented runs of mechanically identical K2XX crew cabs with the 355 hp 5.3L V8, 4x4 and the 6-speed automatic returned 6.70–7.10 seconds, so 6.9 s is taken as the corroborated mid-point rather than any single run; published 2017 estimates cluster slightly quicker at 6.6–6.7 s. The 2017 truck is a carry-over mechanically, so no year-specific change moves this figure.

Powertrain refinement73
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The EcoTec3 small-block V8s are the strength here: direct injection, continuously variable valve timing and a deep, immediate low-end torque curve give the lag-free delivery a half-ton wants, and nothing in the 2017 Sierra 1500 range is turbocharged, so there is no lag or coarseness to manage. What keeps it out of the top band is Active Fuel Management, standard on every Sierra 1500, whose four-to-eight-cylinder transitions are audible and occasionally felt at light throttle, plus the base 4.3L V6's ordinary manners on work-truck models.

Transmission behavior58
#5 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The volume 2017 Sierra 1500 still uses the 6L80 6-speed automatic with Tow/Haul, Range Selection and TapShift — smooth and decisive in ordinary driving, but two to four ratios behind the Ford 10-speed and Ram 8-speed it was competing against, which costs it responsiveness and highway relaxation. The 8L90 8-speed is restricted to select SLT, Denali and all 6.2L trucks, and is the unit reviewers and owners most often fault for hesitant and occasionally harsh shift behavior.

Max towing capacity
12,500 lbs max (6.2L V8, Double Cab or Crew Cab Short Box 2WD, Max Trailering Package); ~9,200 lbs for the volume 5.3L crew cab short box 4WD, ~10,800 lbs with the Max Trailering Package; 5,500–7,600 lbs with the 4.3L V6
88/100
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GMC raised the Sierra 1500's headline rating to 12,500 lbs for 2017 and made it the centre of the truck's trailering pitch — strong for a half-ton and high in the truck band, matching what the redesigned 2019-on truck would go on to offer. The volume 5.3L crew cab short box 4WD most buyers order is rated around 9,200 lbs, rising to roughly 10,800 lbs with the NHT Max Trailering Package.

Max payload
2,250 lbs max (Double Cab standard box, properly equipped); 1,930–2,250 lbs across the 4.3L V6 and 5.3L V8 range, 2,120–2,250 lbs with the 6.2L V8
48/100
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The published maximum payload for the 2017 Sierra 1500 is 2,250 lbs, reached in a Double Cab — respectable but unexceptional for a half-ton, and most crew cabs land lower in the 1,930–2,160 lb range. The aluminum-bodied F-150 of the same year exceeded 3,000 lbs in comparable trim, which is what puts this mid-band rather than high.

Towing tech & aids57
#5 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The 2017 Sierra covers the core towing kit well — Tow/Haul mode, trailer sway control, hill start assist and auto grade braking, a seven-wire harness standard on all 1500s, an available integrated proportional trailer brake controller with gain readout in the DIC, and the NHT Max Trailering Package bundling the brake controller, a 9.76-inch ring gear, enhanced cooling, revised shocks and heavier rear springs. It sits just below its 2018 successor because the rear vision camera is still only available rather than standard across the range, and the only multi-view trailering camera is a dealer-installed third-party EchoMaster accessory carrying a non-GM warranty. Also absent in this generation: trailer backup or steering assist, trailer profiles, an in-vehicle trailering app and a pre-departure checklist, all of which arrived with the 2019 redesign.

AWD/4WD availability78
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Four-wheel drive is available across the whole 2017 Sierra 1500 range — base through Denali, with every engine — using a genuine two-speed transfer case with 4-Low, and most models can be had with GMC's AutoTrac automatic 4WD setting that shuttles torque forward on detected slip. An Eaton automatic locking rear differential is available and is bundled into the Max Trailering Package. It sits below the top band because 4WD is an extra-cost option rather than standard, and because this generation offers no terrain or drive-mode selector of the kind the 2019-on trucks introduced.

Off-road capability60
#6 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The 2017 Sierra's off-road answer is the Z71-based All Terrain package on SLE/SLT double and crew cabs — Rancho shocks, an underbody shield, hill descent control and an available locking rear differential — with the All Terrain X adding LT275/65R18 Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac mud-terrain tires, black 18-inch wheels, assist steps and a sport bar, on roughly 8.7–9.0 inches of ground clearance. Credible light-duty capability, but there is no dedicated high-capability trim (the AT4 does not exist until the 2019 redesign), no factory suspension lift and no front locker, in a year when the Raptor, Power Wagon and TRD Pro had already defined the top of this band.

Powertrain lineup breadth62
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Three distinct gasoline engines — a 4.3L V6, a 5.3L V8 and a 6.2L V8 — cover the mainstream half-ton spread from work truck to Denali, and a fourth listing, the 5.3L with eAssist, adds a mild-hybrid variant that is the range's only electrification. That is a solid middle-band menu rather than a broad one: there is no light-duty diesel in the 2017 Sierra 1500 (the 3.0L Duramax arrives with the 2019 redesign, and the registry's 'diesel' entry for this nameplate refers to later years), no turbocharged four, no full hybrid, no plug-in and no EV.

2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Sierra 1500's weakest categories.0.60F
Combined fuel economy
18 MPG combined (5.3L V8 4WD, 6-speed, volume); 19 MPG (5.3L 2WD 6-speed), 17–18 MPG (5.3L with the 8-speed), 17 MPG (6.2L V8, premium), 19–20 MPG (4.3L V6), 18–20 MPG (5.3L eAssist)
31/100
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The volume 5.3L V8 4WD crew cab returns 18 MPG combined — thirsty in absolute terms and low in the gas-truck band, and identical to what the same engine manages in the redesigned 2020 Sierra. There is no efficiency escape hatch in the 2017 range: the thriftiest conventional Sierra 1500 is the base 4.3L V6 2WD at 20 MPG, and the light-duty Duramax that transforms this figure does not arrive until 2019.

City fuel economy
16 MPG city (5.3L V8 4WD 6-speed, volume); 15 MPG (5.3L with the 8-speed and the 6.2L V8), 17–18 MPG (4.3L V6), 18 MPG (5.3L eAssist 2WD)
33/100
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

16 MPG in town is where this truck costs the most to run, and Active Fuel Management's cylinder deactivation does comparatively little in stop-and-start use. Only the base 4.3L V6 and the eAssist mild hybrid do meaningfully better, at 17–18 MPG.

Highway fuel economy
22 MPG highway (5.3L V8 4WD 6-speed, volume); 23 MPG (5.3L 2WD 6-speed), 20–21 MPG (8-speed 5.3L and 6.2L V8), 22–24 MPG (4.3L V6)
36/100
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

22 MPG on the highway is the best this configuration does and sits in the lower-middle of the truck band, which runs to 31 MPG. The taller-geared 2WD sibling reaches 23 MPG, and the 8-speed trucks are rated lower still at 20–21 MPG because that transmission is paired with heavier-duty axle and trailering hardware.

Driving range
~468 mi (26-gal crew cab tank × 18 MPG combined, 5.3L V8 4WD, volume); ~520 mi with the 4.3L V6 2WD; long-box models carry a 34-gal tank for roughly 610 mi
45/100
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

A 26-gallon tank paired with 18 MPG combined gives the volume configuration roughly 470 miles between fills — a genuine strength relative to its poor economy, since the K2XX's tank is larger than the 24 gallons GM fitted to the 2019-on replacement. The figure is derived from the EPA combined rating and the published tank size rather than quoted directly by EPA.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$3,450/yr (EPA, 5.3L V8 4WD 6-speed, 15,000 mi/yr); $3,300 (5.3L 2WD 6-speed and 4.3L V6 4WD), $3,100 (4.3L V6 2WD and 5.3L eAssist 2WD), $2,800–$3,050 on E85, higher still for the premium-fuel 6.2L V8
27/100
#4 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

EPA puts annual fuel spend for the volume 5.3L V8 4WD configuration at $3,450, or $5.78 per 25 miles — high in absolute terms and in the upper half of the truck band's cost range. Nothing in the 2017 lineup gets a buyer much below $3,100, and the 6.2L V8's premium-fuel requirement pushes Denali trucks so equipped higher again.

Fuel requirements80
#5 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The volume 5.3L V8 and the base 4.3L V6 both make their full rated output on regular 87-octane unleaded, and several configurations of each are flex-fuel capable, which adds a cheaper option wherever E85 is sold — EPA prices the volume 5.3L 4WD's E85 running cost below its gasoline cost, and the 4.3L 2WD's E85 cost $300/yr below. The score stays below the top of the band because the 6.2L V8 fitted to Denali and top SLT trucks requires premium.

3SafetyThe Sierra 1500's lowest-graded category.0.45F
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5 frontal, 5 side, 4 rollover)
100/100
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

NHTSA rated every 2017 Sierra 1500 cab configuration at 5 stars overall, with 5 stars frontal and side and the 4-star rollover typical of a body-on-frame full-size truck.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness44
#5 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Good ratings in moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints, but Marginal in the driver-side small overlap front test — a key crashworthiness test — and no Top Safety Pick award for any 2017 Sierra 1500 configuration.

Standard ADAS suite breadth15
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Nothing beyond StabiliTrak, trailer sway control and Teen Driver is standard on the volume trims — every driver-assistance feature the truck offers is bundled into the optional Enhanced Driver Alert Package (Y86), and blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise are not offered at any price.

Automatic emergency braking performance20
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

AEB is optional and low-speed only — GM's Low Speed Collision Mitigation Braking operates only at city speeds — with no pedestrian detection at all, and IIHS credited the system for forward collision warning without evaluating its autobrake.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage8
#5 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The 2017 Sierra 1500 offers no blind-spot monitoring and no rear cross-traffic alert on any trim — GM did not add Side Blind Zone Alert to the light-duty Sierra until the 2019 redesign. Only ultrasonic park assist and a rear camera cover the blind zones of a truck with wide rear quarters and a long bed.

Lane keeping & centering35
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Lane departure warning and a nudge-style Lane Keep Assist exist but only inside the optional Enhanced Driver Alert Package, and the system is a corrective steering nudge with a vibrating Safety Alert Seat rather than true lane centering.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist10
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Plain fixed-speed cruise control only — adaptive cruise was never offered on the 2014–2018 light-duty Sierra, and there is no highway-assist function of any kind.

Hands-free driving availability5
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving option. Super Cruise launched for 2017 on the Cadillac CT6 only and did not reach any GMC truck until the 2022 Sierra.

Headlight performance22
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

IIHS rated every tested 2017 Sierra headlight configuration Acceptable or worse, and both HID projector setups Poor — so the upper trims buyers assume are better-lit are the ones rated worst, with only the LED projector plus high-beam assist reaching Acceptable.

Outward visibility56
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The boxy GMT K2XX body helps — upright glass, a squared-off hood whose corners the driver can place, and large mirrors — but it is still a full-size truck with a high beltline, thick B-pillars, a long bed and no surround-view camera to compensate for what the mirrors miss.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability42
#5 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

IIHS rated the LATCH hardware Poor — only two of the three rear positions have complete anchor sets and the third is tether-only, with anchors set deep in the seat bight. The crew cab's wide-opening doors and generous rear bench partly offset the hardware, so seats fit once installed.

4Space & ComfortThe Sierra 1500's best-graded category.2.83B-
Seating capacity
6 (Crew Cab SLE/SLT with the standard 40/20/40 split front bench); 5 when the front bucket seats and floor console are fitted, which is standard on Denali. Double Cab is also 6/5; Regular Cab is 3/2.
100/100
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The volume 2017 SLE Crew Cab ships with a 40/20/40 split front bench, making it a six-seater; specifying the bucket-seat console drops it to five, and Denali is a five-seater as standard. Cab and seating architecture are unchanged from 2016 — 2017 is a carry-over year inside the K2XX generation.

Front headroom
42.8 in (Crew Cab, without sunroof); the power sunroof available on SLE and above costs roughly an inch
96/100
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The tall, square K2XX cab sits near the top of the truck normalization band for front headroom, and the dimension is identical to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 it shares a body with.

Front legroom
45.3 in (Crew Cab; the same front cell across Regular, Double and Crew Cab)
100/100
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

45.3 in sits at or above the top of the truck normalization band — front-row stretch-out room was never a K2XX weakness, and the front cell is common to all three cab styles.

Rear headroom
40.5 in (Crew Cab second row); the Double Cab is fractionally less
83/100
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The Crew Cab's upright roofline gives genuinely generous second-row headroom, near the top of the truck band.

Rear legroom
40.9 in (Crew Cab second row) — roomy in absolute terms but well short of the 43.4 in the 2019 T1XX redesign delivered two years later
66/100
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The K2XX Crew Cab's 40.9 in is mid-band: comfortable for adults, but rear legroom is the specific dimension GM engineered the 2019 redesign to fix.

Bed length
69.3 in / 5'8" Short Box (the volume Crew Cab pairing, on the 143.5" wheelbase); 78.9 in / 6'6" Standard Box (Crew Cab on the 153.0" wheelbase, and Regular/Double Cab); 97.8 in / 8' Long Box (Regular and Double Cab only)
35/100
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Crew Cab buyers overwhelmingly take the Short Box, which trades bed floor length for cabin room — the shortest of the three 2017 boxes and low in the truck band. Three box lengths were offered, unchanged for 2017.

Bed volume
53.4 cu ft (5'8" Short Box, the volume Crew Cab configuration); 61.0 cu ft (6'6" Standard Box); ~76 cu ft (8' Long Box)
47/100
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The Short Box's 53.4 cu ft is the price paid for the Crew Cab's rear seat; the Standard Box adds roughly 8 cu ft on a 9.5-inch-longer floor.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions62
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Competitive rather than clever: a deep center console bin, flip-up rear seat cushions for weather-protected in-cab storage and genuinely useful bed hardware, but no in-bed trunk, no onboard generator and no fold-flat innovation of the kind that defines the top band.

Seat comfort71
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Wide, well-padded seats most drivers settle into for long stints, but reviewers consistently describe flat cushions with little lateral support and limited adjustment outside the upper trims — the volume SLE needs its Preferred Package for 10-way power.

Ride quality73
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

A real strength of this generation — firm but rarely punishing, with well-controlled body motions unladen — and the Sierra has an advantage its Silverado twin lacks in Magnetic Ride Control, though only on Denali. Two 2017-specific caveats keep it mid-band: reviewers report the ride degrading noticeably on the optional 22-inch wheels, and owners of the All Terrain package find its Rancho shocks floaty at highway speed.

Cabin quietness75
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Isolation was repeatedly singled out as a class strength for this generation, with triple-sealed doors and acoustic glass up-range; the boxy cab still generates audible wind rush at highway speed, which keeps it out of the top band.

Climate & comfort features57
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The key comfort items all exist but are pushed up-range: the volume SLE Crew Cab has single-zone air conditioning and needs an option package for remote start, power seats and dual-zone climate, with heated seats waiting until SLT and a heated wheel until Denali.

5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.09C
Base MSRP
$28,405 (base Sierra Regular Cab 119" 2WD, 4.3L V6, delivered); lineup runs to $55,955 for Denali Crew Cab 4WD 153"
94/100
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GMC's cheapest 2017 Sierra 1500 is a plain Regular Cab 2WD on the 285 hp 4.3L V6, about $620 above the equivalent Chevrolet Silverado Work Truck — the standing GMC premium over its mechanical twin. It still sits near the bottom of the full-size truck band, but this is a fleet-oriented configuration nobody cross-shops, which is why the item carries no weight of its own.

Volume-Trim Price
~$47,300 (SLE Crew Cab Short Box 4WD, 5.3L V8, as typically equipped, delivered); SLE Crew Cab 4WD opens at $44,345 with the standard 4.3L V6
66/100
#6 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Sierra volume sat in the SLE Crew Cab 4WD band, listed at $44,345 — but that price buys the 4.3L V6, and the volume truck is the 355 hp 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 scored in categories 1 and 2, roughly an $1,100 upcharge. Add the option content most SLEs left the lot with (SLE Preferred/Convenience package, X31 off-road, 20-inch wheels) and a representative truck lands near $47,300, about $1,500 above the equivalent Silverado LT Crew Cab 4WD — the premium a GMC buyer pays for identical mechanicals.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$7,000 over 5 years (est. maintenance + repair, 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 with the 6L80 six-speed)
53/100
#6 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Mechanically this is the Silverado, so routine service on the pushrod 5.3L is cheap and parts are everywhere — but GMC dealer labour rates run a little above Chevrolet's, which is why this lands about $100 above the twin. The repair half is what pushes the total to roughly class median: this generation's Active Fuel Management lifter failures are a well-documented four-figure repair on the 5.3L, and the 2014–2018 trucks carry the long-running driveline vibration complaint. The volume 2017 configuration does at least use the durable 6L80 six-speed rather than the 8L90 eight-speed whose torque-converter shudder became this generation's signature transmission repair.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~68% of as-equipped MSRP retained at 5 years (2022); ~$32,200 residual on a ~$47,300 SLE Crew Cab 4WD
72/100
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The 2017 model year hit its five-year mark in 2022, at the peak of the pandemic used-pickup price spike, so it retained value well above what the nameplate structurally manages in a normal market. The Sierra does sit about a point ahead of the Silverado over the long run — GMC's smaller fleet and rental share and its richer trim mix support residuals — though both trail the F-150. Retention is quoted against as-equipped MSRP for the volume SLE Crew Cab 4WD, not the stripped base Regular Cab price.

Basic warranty

#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GM's standard bumper-to-bumper term under GMC Pro Grade Protection, identical across the 2017 GMC line and to the mechanically identical Chevrolet Silverado 1500. It matched Ford, Ram, Toyota and Nissan in 2017 but sits at the industry floor and at the bottom of the 3–5 year band, well behind Hyundai/Kia's 5-year/60,000-mile coverage — and notably ungenerous for a brand charging a premium price.

GM had cut powertrain coverage from 5 years/100,000 miles to 5 years/60,000 miles beginning with the 2016 model year, so a 2017 Sierra buyer got the shorter term — the segment floor, matching Ford, Ram and Toyota but behind Nissan's 5-year/100,000-mile Titan coverage and far behind Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile. It scores at the bottom of the 5–10 year band, and 60,000 miles runs out well short of the 80,000–120,000-mile window in which this engine's AFM lifter failures cluster.

Complimentary maintenance & perks63
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

2017 falls inside the more generous era of GMC Pro Grade Protection: two complimentary maintenance visits within 2 years/24,000 miles, each covering an oil and filter change, a four-wheel tire rotation and a multi-point inspection — double what a 2019-or-later GMC buyer received after the program was cut to a single visit. Alongside it come 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance and courtesy transportation and an OnStar plus 4G LTE Wi-Fi trial. That is a real if modest maintenance program rather than a token visit: ahead of Ford, which included no scheduled maintenance on the 2017 F-150 at all, and level with or ahead of Ram, but behind Toyota's ToyotaCare, which covered all factory-scheduled maintenance for 2 years/25,000 miles on the Tundra rather than counting visits. It scores no higher than the Chevrolet twin because it is literally the same program under a different name — GMC's premium positioning bought no extra ownership coverage.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$22,136 (≈$15,136 depreciation + $7,000 maintenance)
73/100
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

$47,300 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (68% retained, or about $32,164) leaves about $15,136 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $22,136 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.82C-
Predicted reliability43
#5 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

2017 is a carry-over year inside the K2XX generation (2014–2018) — only Teen Driver, capless fuel fill, Android Auto and active grille shutters changed — so the truck inherits that generation's two known long-horizon failure modes rather than any 2017-specific fix. J.D. Power rates the 2017 Sierra 1500 below average for predicted reliability at 2.5 out of 5, and CarComplaints logs 525 owner complaints led by severe vibration and 5.3L AFM lifter failure. The counterweight is real: RepairPal puts the nameplate at 3.5/5 and 3rd of 17 full-size trucks on actual repair data, and the Sierra's complaints cluster at 73,000–84,000 miles rather than inside the warranty, which is materially better than the mechanically identical Silverado 1500 (CarComplaints 'Beware of the Clunker', transmission failures from ~3,000 miles). Below-average predictions with a genuine dissenting source, and a failure profile that is late-life rather than out-of-the-box.

Brand reliability track record55
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The cohort-matched study for this truck is J.D. Power's 2020 Vehicle Dependability Study, which surveyed original owners of 2017 model-year vehicles at three years; GMC did not reach its top five (Genesis 89, Lexus 100, Buick 103, Porsche 104, Toyota 113 PP100 against a 134 industry average), and GM's segment awards that year went to Buick and Chevrolet models, none of them a GMC. The two long-run sources still disagree about the brand: J.D. Power has GMC consistently near or better than average and placed it 7th at 181 PP100 against a 202 average in the 2025 VDS, while Consumer Reports keeps it in the bottom tier, 23rd of 26 brands in its 2026 report card. A brand that is mid-pack on one authoritative measure and bottom-third on the other belongs squarely in the middle band, not either extreme.

Recall & TSB history52
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Five NHTSA campaigns reach the 2017 Sierra 1500 — an unremarkable count for a full-size pickup of this era — but the severity mix is what holds the score to the middle of the band. Two of the five are air-bag and seat-belt-pretensioner non-deployment (16V651000, and 17V437000 because the first remedy's software did not always take), and two are braking defects: degrading vacuum-pump brake assist across 2014–2018 Silverado/Sierra, and unintended activation of the driveline-protection system that brakes one wheel and pulls the truck sideways at 41–60 mph on 5.3L 4WD trucks with the 3.08 axle — precisely the volume configuration. Behind the recalls sit this generation's two systemic bulletin families, AFM lifter collapse on the 5.3L L83 and 8L90 torque-converter shudder, with CarComplaints counting roughly 1,150 TSBs on file for the model year. Restraints and brakes appearing twice each, over a deep bulletin trail, is typical-volume but above-typical severity.

Powertrain durability reputation51
#5 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The scored volume configuration is the 5.3L EcoTec3 L83 V8 with the Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed — the SLE keeps the six-speed, while the 8L90 eight-speed carrying the class-action shudder defect arrives on SLT and Denali, so the volume Sierra avoids the worse of the two transmissions (a caveat worth noting, since GMC's trim mix skews richer than Chevrolet's and a larger share of Sierras than Silverados left with the 8L90). The Gen V small block underneath is as proven as anything in the segment, with 250,000-mile service lives commonly reported. Against that sits the one failure this engine family is defined by: Active Fuel Management lifters collapse and lose lobe contact, producing tick, misfire and bent pushrods, and CarComplaints puts the average bill at $5,800 at 73,000 miles — outside any factory coverage and expensive enough to total a high-mileage truck's book value. The 6L80 has its own torque-converter shudder and valve-body wear history that heavy towing accelerates. Proven architecture, one well-documented and costly failure mode, and the better of the two available transmissions — mid-band.

Interior material quality67
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Judged against its own model year rather than what the 2019 Ram later made standard, the Sierra cabin reviewed well: U.S. News called it one of the nicest interiors in the class, with a quiet cabin and materials good enough on upper trims to forget you are in a truck. GMC-specific trim treatment and the Denali's genuine upgrade lift the nameplate's perceived quality above the mechanically identical Silverado. What keeps it out of the top band is the volume SLE, where Edmunds found plastics that 'feel similar to those on the back of a television' and singled out the fake wood trim as a poor choice, plus the Premium price class the Sierra is sold in — GMC charges above Chevrolet for the same hardware, and this item measures richness relative to price.

Fit & finish62
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Structural assembly is not the complaint — reviewers found build quality on par with the segment's better trucks, and body/paint draws only 6 CarComplaints entries for the model year. The deduction is for drivability and component faults that read to owners as assembly defects: hard 1-2 shifts reported from about 12,000 miles, lunges and surges at parking-lot speeds, and shudder under light throttle on 8-speed trucks. At 525 total complaints the Sierra is meaningfully cleaner than the 2017 Silverado's ~1,000 even allowing for the Chevrolet's larger sales base, but a persistent band of scattered driveline and electronics complaints is still the defining pattern. Generally solid with real, recurring exceptions.

Dealer & service network78
#4 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GMC runs roughly 1,650 US franchised locations, mostly as combined Buick-GMC stores. That is a genuinely national network and more than adequate for warranty and recall work anywhere in the country, but it is barely more than half of Chevrolet's ~2,860 outlets — a real disadvantage for the mechanically identical Silverado owner in the rural markets where these trucks sell hardest, and it matters on this model year because the vacuum-pump and driveline-protection campaigns landed two and three years into ownership and had to be performed free at a dealer. GMC's service satisfaction sits at or modestly above the mainstream-brand average on J.D. Power's Customer Service Index, helped by the brand's premium positioning; the ordinary friction of getting an AFM lifter or torque-converter job authorized under warranty is what keeps it short of the top band.

Parts availability & repair cost85
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

This is the truck's clearest strength. The Sierra shares its platform, 5.3L small block and 6L80 transmission with the Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade of the same K2XX era, so parts commonality is enormous and the engine is one every independent shop in the country already knows. Nine model years out, the used, reman and aftermarket channels are fully mature. RepairPal puts annual repair cost at $727 against a $936 full-size-truck average with 0.2 unscheduled shop visits a year, ranking the Sierra 3rd of 17 in the class. The one caveat is severity rather than price or supply: RepairPal notes Sierra repairs skew more severe than average, and the two jobs this generation is known for — AFM lifters and torque-converter shudder — run $2,500–$5,800 and land well outside factory coverage.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Sierra 1500's weakest categories.0.84F
Touchscreen size
8.0 in (GMC IntelliLink, standard on SLE and above — the volume configuration); 7.0 in IntelliLink on the base Sierra. 8.0 in is the largest screen offered anywhere in the 2017 range, including Denali.
0/100
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The volume SLE carries the 8-inch IntelliLink unit, which was the top of this generation's offering and now sits at the very bottom of the truck normalization band, which runs to 18.5 in. Sources disagree on where the 8-inch starts — Edmunds and KBB put it on SLE, CarGurus' trim summary pushes it to Denali — but that summary also misstates the base engine as a 4.6L V6, so the Edmunds/KBB reading is taken.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness68
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GMC IntelliLink was one of the better-regarded systems of its era — logical tile menus, quick responses to inputs, and a full bank of physical knobs and hard buttons beneath the screen that most modern rivals have since deleted. Resolution and graphics that already looked ordinary in 2017 are what hold it to the middle band.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto52
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

2017 is the year the pairing completed: Apple CarPlay carried over from 2016 on both IntelliLink systems, and Android Auto was added — but only on the 8-inch screens, so the base truck's 7-inch unit is CarPlay-only. Both are wired; no wireless projection was offered on any trim, which places this squarely mid-band and a notch below the 2018 truck, where both platforms were standard on both screens.

Voice control & native navigation48
#4 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Command-word voice recognition rather than natural language, and embedded navigation is a cost option most volume SLE buyers skip in favour of the phone projection that now comes free with the truck.

Audio system quality64
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The standard six-speaker system on the volume SLE is adequate rather than good, but the Bose premium upgrade sits a rung lower in the Sierra range than in most rivals — optional on SLT and standard on Denali.

Digital instrument cluster47
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Analog six-gauge cluster throughout the range, with a 4.2-inch colour Driver Information Center between the dials and a larger reconfigurable colour display on Denali — partial digital at best, never a full-digital cluster.

OTA update capability10
#5 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

No meaningful over-the-air capability: GM's whole-vehicle OTA architecture arrived with the Vehicle Intelligence Platform years after this truck's electrical architecture was set, and the K2XX Sierra needs a dealer visit or a USB stick for any software change.

Companion app & remote functions58
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The myGMC / OnStar RemoteLink app covers the core remote set — start, lock/unlock, locate, diagnostics and fuel level — but it depends on an OnStar Remote Access plan that becomes a paid subscription after the trial, remote start additionally requires the truck to be equipped with it, and there is no digital key.

Charging ports & device power53
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Adequate port count but dated format — up to five USB ports, all USB-A with no USB-C anywhere, wireless charging restricted to the upper trims, and the 110-volt household outlet an option rather than standard kit.

Keyless & remote access60
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Remote keyless entry and a remote locking tailgate are standard on the volume SLE, but proximity Keyless Open and Start and remote start are not — remote start is bundled into an option package, and the base trim still uses a conventional key.

Camera & parking aids45
#4 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

A rear vision camera is standard from SLE up — so the volume truck has one — but it is still only available on the base trim, a year before GMC made it standard line-wide, and no surround-view camera was offered on the 1500 at any price. Front and rear ultrasonic park assist wait until SLT.

Head-up display availability5
#4 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

No head-up display was offered on any 2017 Sierra 1500 trim, including Denali — the feature is two model years away.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.91C-
Kid & car-seat practicality52
#6 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The Crew Cab gets the basics right — wide-opening rear doors, a flat 40.9-inch-legroom bench broad enough to take three seats abreast, and flip-up cushions that free a weather-protected floor for bags — but the child-seat hardware itself is rated Poor, the step-in height defeats small children trying to climb in unaided, and the only enclosed cargo hold for a stroller is the cabin unless the bed is covered.

Family safety package30
#5 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Crash structure is strong and the trims families buy get a rear camera, but the driver-assistance proposition is the weakest part of this truck: blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are unavailable at any price, automatic braking is optional and low-speed only with no pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise does not exist, and the small-overlap and headlight results undercut the 5-star NHTSA headline.

Family road-trip comfort56
#6 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

A quiet, roomy Crew Cab that four adults cover distance in comfortably, and the bed swallows more luggage than any SUV — but the rear row is amenity-thin for the price: vents without a separate climate zone, no rear entertainment, no sunshades, and luggage in the open bed needs a tonneau or it gets wet.

Daily driving ease58
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Low-speed manners are genuinely easy — the 5.3L V8 has deep off-idle torque, the 6-speed shifts unobtrusively, the steering is light and the upright glasshouse gives good forward sightlines — but it is a 229-inch, 80-inch-wide truck in traffic, Active Fuel Management's cylinder transitions intrude at light throttle, and there is no adaptive cruise to take the edge off a stop-and-go commute.

Commuting cost efficiency32
#4 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

An expensive way to commute. The volume 5.3L V8 4WD returns 18 MPG combined and 16 MPG in town, which EPA prices at $3,450 a year — and nothing in the 2017 range gets a buyer much below $3,100. The offsets are real but small: regular 87-octane, flex-fuel capability on several configurations, and consumables that every independent shop stocks cheaply.

Parking & maneuverability28
#6 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Poor in the city by any measure that matters: a 47.2-foot curb-to-curb circle on the volume Crew Cab Short Box, an 80-inch body that fills a standard parking bay, and a long bed behind a high tailgate. The standard rear camera helps, but there is no surround-view system at any price and ultrasonic park assist does not appear until SLT.

Work capability82
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

This is what the truck is for, and 2017 is the year GMC pushed the headline number to the top of the light-duty class — 12,500 lbs properly equipped, with the volume 5.3L Crew Cab 4WD still rated around 9,200 lbs and about 10,800 with the Max Trailering Package. Payload is the softer half: 2,250 lbs maximum against an F-150 that exceeded 3,000 in comparable trim.

Durability for work duty70
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

A fleet staple with a fully boxed frame and a pushrod small-block every independent shop in the country can rebuild, and the volume SLE keeps the 6L80 six-speed rather than the 8L90 that drew a shudder class action. What keeps it out of the top band is the generation's well-documented Active Fuel Management lifter and oil-consumption failure mode, which surfaces at exactly the mileages a work truck reaches fastest.

Jobsite & upfit practicality77
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Strong on the hardware a crew actually touches — the CornerStep rear bumper and standard E-Z Lift and Lower tailgate make the bed genuinely easier to get into and out of than a Ford or Ram of the year, movable upper tie-downs let a load be strapped where it sits, and the aftermarket for racks, toolboxes and service bodies on this platform is effectively unlimited. Onboard power is the gap: the 110-volt outlet is an option-package item, and there is no inverter of Pro Power scale.

Long-distance comfort & range61
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

A capable mile-eater on the two things that cost nothing to fix — a quiet, well-isolated cabin and roughly 470 miles from the 26-gallon tank, more than the 2019-on replacement manages on its smaller tank. It loses ground on seats reviewers call flat and unsupportive for anything but cruising, and on fatigue tech: no adaptive cruise and no lane centering existed on this truck, so the driver does all of the work.

Outdoor & adventure capability74
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

A genuine adventure enabler on the fundamentals: four-wheel drive with a real two-speed transfer case and 4-Low across the whole range, an available Eaton locking rear differential, roughly 8.7 inches of clearance, hill descent control, and enough tow rating for any boat or toy hauler a family owns. It stops short of the top band because there is no dedicated high-capability trim — the AT4 is two model years away — no factory lift and no front locker.

Gear & luggage flexibility66
#4 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

An open bed takes shapes no SUV can — a bike upright, a kayak, lumber past the tailgate — and three box lengths plus a flip-up rear bench and a standard hitch receiver cover most of what a trip demands. The deduction is that none of it is secure or dry without buying a tonneau or cap, and the volume Crew Cab's 5'8" box is the shortest of the three.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the Sierra 1500's strongest categories.2.36C+
Handling & agility66
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Secure and composed rather than agile — the K2XX chassis is stable and predictable, reviewers single out smooth handling for a half-ton, and the Denali's Magnetic Ride Control adds body control the Silverado twin could not buy. The ceiling is set by what it is: a body-on-frame truck with a live rear axle, and the optional 22-inch wheel and tire package actively costs grip.

Steering feel50
#4 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Accurate enough to place the truck confidently and light enough to make parking-lot work easy, but the electric assist never varies its weighting and transmits nothing from the front tires — the textbook definition of precise but numb.

Braking confidence70
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Pedal feel is the strong half — firm, progressive and easy to modulate with a load or a trailer behind, helped by Tow/Haul mode and auto grade braking. The measured stop is only ordinary for the class, which is what keeps this in the middle band rather than above it.

Powertrain smoothness & response70
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The naturally aspirated EcoTec3 small-block is the easy part — direct injection and variable valve timing give immediate, lag-free tip-in with nothing turbocharged in the range to manage — and the volume truck's 6L80 six-speed shifts unobtrusively. The deduction is Active Fuel Management, standard on every Sierra 1500, whose cylinder-deactivation transitions are audible and occasionally felt at light throttle.

Drivetrain noise & vibration74
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

A pushrod V8 that sounds like one — a low, pleasant note under load rather than a four-cylinder drone — and this generation's isolation keeps it out of the cabin at cruise, with no turbo boom or CVT flare to contend with.

Turning circle
47.2 ft curb-to-curb (Crew Cab Short Box on the 143.5" wheelbase — the volume configuration); wider on the 153.0" wheelbase Crew Cab Standard Box, and roughly 40 ft for the 119" wheelbase Regular Cab
49/100
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

47.2 ft is mid-band for a full-size truck and a direct consequence of the 143.5-inch wheelbase the volume Crew Cab rides on — manageable on the road, awkward in a parking structure.

Driving position & ergonomics67
#4 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

A commanding seating position behind upright glass, with large physical knobs and hard buttons for climate and audio that beat most touch-only rivals for eyes-off use, and a squared hood whose corners the driver can actually place. It falls short of the top band on adjustability — power-adjustable pedals and memory wait until SLT and Denali, the volume SLE needs a package for a 10-way power seat — and on the step-in height a body-on-frame 4WD truck imposes.

Fun-to-drive factor58
#1 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

There is real character in a 355 hp small-block V8 with 383 lb-ft underfoot, and the 6.2L Denali at 420 hp is quick enough to surprise people — but the numb steering, tall body and workmanlike remit mean nobody takes the long way home in one. Pleasant, capable, forgettable.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Sierra 1500's strongest categories.2.34C+
Standard equipment generosity56
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

A split result, as on the Chevrolet twin, but tilted a little richer. On infotainment and convenience the volume SLE gave away more than its rivals: the 8-inch IntelliLink touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and — new for 2017 — Android Auto, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot with OnStar, Teen Driver, a rear vision camera, 17-inch aluminium wheels and a leather-wrapped steering wheel all standard, at a time when Ford still charged for Sync 3 on lower F-150 trims. Capless fuel fill went standard across the line for 2017. On driver assistance it gave away almost nothing: forward collision alert and the new low-speed forward automatic braking lived in the Enhanced Driver Alert package on upper trims, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert was not offered on any 2017 Sierra 1500 at any price when both the F-150 and Ram 1500 had it. It rates just above the Silverado because GMC's cheapest trim is less stripped than a vinyl-floor Work Truck and SLE content is richer — but the buyer pays for that in the window sticker, which is why this is competitive rather than generous.

Feature value per dollar58
#5 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Capability per dollar is real: the same 12,500 lb maximum trailering rating that led the light-duty class for 2017, three naturally aspirated engines running on regular unleaded up to the 420 hp 6.2L V8, and heavy GM incentives that meant the money actually paid bought considerably more truck than the sticker implied. But the Sierra is the pricier half of a two-badge pair with identical mechanicals — roughly $620 more at the entry point and about $1,500 more on the volume Crew Cab — so every dollar of the GMC premium buys trim and badge rather than capability. Against that sit the generation's standing criticisms: an interior below its price point, no light-duty diesel to answer the F-150's 3.0L Power Stroke or the Ram EcoDiesel, and a blind-spot monitor that was never on the order sheet at any price. Fair value, rated a notch under the Silverado for the premium.

Trim & configuration breadth76
#4 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Wide on bodies, narrower on trims. Three cab styles, three bed lengths and 2WD or 4WD on essentially everything add up to 28 distinct configurations spanning $28,405 to $55,955 — but only four trim names to carry them (base Sierra, SLE, SLT, Denali) against the Silverado's six plus its stack of appearance editions, so the walk from work truck to leather is coarser and there is a conspicuous gap between the $44,345 SLE Crew Cab and the $55,655 Denali. The powertrain menu is narrow too: three naturally aspirated gas engines, no turbo four and no diesel anywhere in the light-duty range. Good choice, with real gaps.

Sales popularity & market acceptance74
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

A strong seller that is nevertheless the fourth truck in a four-truck race. GMC moved 217,943 Sierras in calendar 2017 — enough for a top-ten placing among all US vehicles and fourth in full-size pickups — but that is roughly a quarter of F-Series volume and well under half the Silverado's, and it was down 1.69% in a year when its Chevrolet twin grew about 2%. Solid, established acceptance rather than segment leadership or momentum, which is what holds it out of the top band.

Brand desirability & image72
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

This is where the GMC premium earns its keep. "Professional Grade" is a genuine positioning rather than a slogan — the Denali sub-brand created the mainstream luxury pickup and by 2017 was pulling transaction prices into territory Chevrolet could not reach with the same sheet metal, which is also why Sierra residuals run about a point ahead of the Silverado's. The 2016 facelift's squared-off, chrome-heavy face reads as more upmarket than the Chevrolet's and was better received than the divisive 2019 shape that followed. It is not aspirational the way a Raptor or a Ram Limited is, and the cabin was the generation's standing criticism, but the badge helps the model rather than merely being neutral — a clear step above the Chevrolet twin.

Deals & incentive availability88
#2 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Scored as buyer benefit, 2017 was a very good year to negotiate a full-size GM pickup. GM was carrying 80-plus days of inventory and spending 13.5% of average transaction price on incentives in October 2017 — roughly $6,000 on a $47,000 truck before dealer discounting — layered on top of long-term 0% financing offers, with the fall clearance on outgoing 2017s running deeper still as GM cleared the way for the 2018s and the T1 redesign behind them. It rates a few points under the Silverado because GMC deliberately disciplines incentives relative to Chevrolet to protect the premium positioning and its residuals, so the Sierra buyer typically saw a somewhat smaller slice of that spend than a Silverado buyer did.

Model freshness52
#3 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

2017 is the fourth year of the K2XX generation launched for 2014 and the second year after its 2016 mid-cycle facelift, with the fourth-generation T1XX truck already known to be arriving for 2019 — so a buyer sat squarely in the back half of a generation with replacement visible on the horizon. The model year added genuine but small content: capless fuel fill and active aero grille shutters went standard, Teen Driver arrived, Android Auto joined CarPlay on the 8-inch screen, low-speed forward automatic braking became available, and tri-mode power steps appeared on the option sheet. Nothing structural changed, and the platform-tech gaps against the aluminium-bodied 2015-on F-150 — no blind-spot monitoring, no adaptive cruise, a six-speed on the volume engine — were the visible cost of the age.

Critical reception & awards58
#4 of 6 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Well reviewed, never the pick of the class, and rated slightly below the Silverado by the aggregators despite being the same truck in nicer clothes — reviewers consistently price the GMC premium into the verdict. Praise goes to the quiet cabin, the breadth of the engine range, the segment-leading tow rating and the five-star NHTSA result; the standing marks against it are interior quality below the asking price, numb steering, and a driver-assistance sheet missing equipment rivals had. It won no major 2017 award — Truck Trend's Pickup Truck of the Year went to the Nissan Titan and North American Truck of the Year to the Honda Ridgeline — and the IIHS Marginal small-overlap result kept it off Top Safety Pick lists. Mid-band, held there by the absence of comparison-test wins rather than by any weak review.
