The verdict

A mixed-report full-size truck, strong on technology and held back by efficiency.

The 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 is the dressed-up version of the Chevy Silverado, and it earns most of that premium inside the cabin and on the trailer hitch — up to 13,300 lbs of towing, a 14-camera trailering suite, and available Super Cruise hands-free highway driving. Space is genuinely excellent (43.0 in front headroom, 43.6 in rear legroom in the Crew Cab), and the 13.4-inch Google-built-in screen is one of the better systems in a full-size truck. The costs are real: 17 MPG combined on the volume 5.3L V8, roughly $3,100 a year in fuel, a bare-minimum 3-year/36,000-mile warranty, and a lingering record of V8 lifter and crankshaft problems on GM's small-block. Buy it for the towing, the tech, and the Denali interior — not for cheap running costs or a spotless reliability record.

Jump to scores

  • Bottom-of-the-barrel warranty
  • Reliability record that demands attention to which engine you pick

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Sierra 1500's weakest categories.2.05C
Horsepower
355 hp (5.3L V8, volume); 310–420 hp gas range (2.7L TurboMax / 5.3L V8 / 6.2L V8); 305 hp (3.0L Duramax I6 diesel)
28/100
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Volume SLT/Elevation trim ships with the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 rated 355 hp; range extends from 310 hp (2.7L TurboMax standard on Pro/SLE) through 420 hp (6.2L V8 on AT4/Denali/Denali Ultimate/AT4X), plus the 305-hp 3.0L Duramax I6 diesel available across most trims.

Torque
383 lb-ft (5.3L V8, volume); 430 (2.7L TurboMax), 460 (6.2L V8), 495 (3.0L Duramax diesel)
27/100
#10 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

5.3L V8 peaks at 383 lb-ft @ 4,100 rpm. Diesel Duramax leads the range at 495 lb-ft and 2.7L TurboMax is 430 lb-ft — meaningful torque options across the lineup for a half-ton.

0–60 mph time
~6.7 s (5.3L V8, volume); ~5.4 s (6.2L V8 Denali Ultimate/AT4X); ~8.0 s (3.0L Duramax)
35/100
#11 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Instrumented tests of the mechanically identical Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8/10-speed put 0–60 mph at 6.5–7.0 s; the 6.2L V8 Denali Ultimate/AT4X runs low-5-second times, and the 3.0L Duramax lands near 8 s but with strong midrange.

Powertrain refinement74
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

5.3L V8 and 6.2L V8 deliver the smooth, low-effort torque expected of a modern GM small-block — no turbo lag, minimal harshness under load; Duramax I6 is uncommonly refined for a diesel. The 2.7L TurboMax has some coarse notes at higher revs but strong low-end. Overall a step above the outgoing generation and competitive with F-150.

Transmission behavior74
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GM's 10L80/10L1000 10-speed automatic — shared with F-150 and Ram — shifts crisply and holds gears intelligently under tow/haul mode; occasional hunting between closely-spaced gears at part-throttle cruise is the primary complaint. Duramax diesel is paired to a well-calibrated 10-speed with negligible lag.

Max towing capacity
13,300 lbs max (5.3L V8 or 3.0L Duramax w/ Max Trailering Package); 9,500 lbs (2.7L TurboMax); AT4X ~8,900 lbs
94/100
#4 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Best-in-class-adjacent 13,300 lb conventional tow when properly equipped with the 5.3L V8 and Max Trailering Package, matched by the 3.0L Duramax. AT4X and Denali Ultimate rate lower due to off-road gearing and equipment mass.

Max payload
~2,240 lbs max (Pro/SLE 2WD, standard bed); typically 1,700–2,200 lbs on volume Elevation/SLT/Denali; AT4X ~1,510 lbs
47/100
#7 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Best-case payload of ~2,240 lbs on lighter Pro/SLE 2WD configurations; most retail Elevation/SLT/Denali trims land 1,700–2,000 lbs, and off-road AT4X is lowest at ~1,510 lbs. Competitive but trails F-150 (up to ~2,455) at the peak.

Towing tech & aids88
#1 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GM's ProGrade Trailering suite is among the most comprehensive on any half-ton: integrated trailer brake controller, tow/haul mode, up to 14 camera views including Transparent Trailer, hitch guidance with hitch-view zoom, jackknife alert, trailer light test, tire pressure/temperature monitoring for trailer tires, and Sierra-exclusive MultiPro tailgate with kick-out step for hitch access. myGMC trailering app tracks maintenance and mileage per trailer profile.

AWD/4WD availability82
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

4WD is optional across every trim and standard on AT4, AT4X, Denali Ultimate and select Denali configurations; two-speed transfer case with 4-Auto (Autotrac) available on higher trims, terrain-response modes on AT4/AT4X, and front/rear electronic locking differentials on AT4X. Only a small step below 'standard everywhere' scoring bands because base Pro/SLE remain 2WD by default.

Off-road capability83
#6 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

AT4X delivers genuine full-size off-road credibility: Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, front and rear electronic locking differentials, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, skid plates, and ~11.2 in. ground clearance with revised approach/departure angles. AT4 provides a lighter version (2-inch lift, single-speed transfer case terrain modes). Not quite Raptor-class (no wide-body / long-travel suspension) but competitive with Ram 1500 Rebel and F-150 Tremor tier.

Powertrain lineup breadth66
#4 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Four distinct powertrains — 2.7L TurboMax I4, 5.3L V8, 6.2L V8, and 3.0L Duramax I6 diesel — cover economy, mainstream torque, top-power, and long-haul-efficiency needs. No hybrid, PHEV, or EV in the Sierra 1500 lineup (Sierra EV is a separate model), which caps the score below F-150 (PowerBoost hybrid) and Ram 1500 (Ramcharger EREV/REV BEV).

2Efficiency & RangeThe Sierra 1500's lowest-graded category.0.13F
Combined fuel economy
17 MPG combined (5.3L V8 4WD Crew Cab, volume trim); 16–26 MPG combined across lineup (2.7L TurboMax 4WD 19 / 2.7L 2WD 20 / 5.3L V8 2WD 18 / 6.2L V8 4WD 16 / 3.0L Duramax 4WD 24 / Duramax 2WD 26)
23/100
#10 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

EPA combined figure for the mainstream 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 4WD Crew Cab configuration (Elevation/SLT volume trim). The 3.0L Duramax I6 diesel is the standout at 24–26 MPG combined; 2.7L TurboMax splits the difference at 19–20 MPG.

City fuel economy
15 MPG city (5.3L V8 4WD Crew, volume); 14–23 MPG city across lineup (23 MPG city with 3.0L Duramax 2WD)
25/100
#11 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

EPA city figure for 5.3L V8 4WD volume trim; Dynamic Fuel Management cylinder deactivation helps but city driving is where the big V8 gives up the most vs. hybrid rivals (F-150 PowerBoost 22 city 4x4 / 25 city 2WD).

Highway fuel economy
20 MPG highway (5.3L V8 4WD Crew, volume); 19–30 MPG highway across lineup (30 MPG hwy with 3.0L Duramax 2WD)
21/100
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

EPA highway rating for volume 5.3L V8 4WD trim; the 3.0L Duramax 2WD posts a class-leading 30 MPG highway for a full-size gas/diesel truck.

Driving range
~408 mi (5.3L V8 4WD, 24-gal tank × 17 MPG combined); optional 28-gal tank pushes range to ~476 mi; ~672 mi with 3.0L Duramax 4WD × 28-gal (~24 MPG × 28 gal)
30/100
#7 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Standard 24-gallon fuel tank on volume trims × 17 MPG combined yields ~408 mi. The optional 28-gallon extended-range tank (standard on some trims) meaningfully improves range, and the 3.0L Duramax with the 28-gal tank routinely exceeds 650 mi in real-world use.

Estimated annual fuel cost
~$3,100/yr (5.3L V8 4WD, regular unleaded, EPA 15k mi/yr); ~$2,200/yr with 3.0L Duramax 2WD; ~$3,400+/yr with 6.2L V8 on premium
39/100
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

EPA estimate for volume 5.3L V8 4WD configuration at 15,000 mi/yr and current regular-fuel price assumptions. The Duramax diesel cuts fuel spend substantially, while the 6.2L V8's premium requirement pushes annual cost above the V8 baseline despite similar MPG.

Fuel requirements74
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The volume 5.3L V8 and standard 2.7L TurboMax both run on regular 87-octane unleaded, and the 3.0L Duramax runs on widely-available ULSD, so mainstream Elevation/SLT/AT4/Denali buyers avoid a premium-fuel penalty. The 6.2L V8 (standard on Denali Ultimate and AT4X and optional on AT4/Denali) recommends 91-octane premium, and the Duramax adds a modest per-gallon diesel premium plus DEF top-ups. Slightly below the 80+ tier because two of the four available engines carry higher-cost fuel needs, but the mainstream configuration is regular-fuel friendly.

3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.19C
NHTSA overall rating
4 stars (Crew Cab, carried over)
50/100
#2 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Current-generation Sierra 1500 Crew Cab (shared with Silverado 1500) rated 4 stars overall by NHTSA — 5-star side, 4-star frontal, 3-star rollover typical for a full-size 4WD pickup. No structural changes noted for 2026 that would alter the result.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness50
#2 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Sierra 1500 (structurally identical to Silverado 1500) is not a Top Safety Pick — Good in original moderate overlap and roof strength, but Marginal in the updated moderate overlap test due to rear-passenger belt kinematics, and Acceptable/Marginal in the updated side test. Headlight and headlight-status gaps also block TSP.

Standard ADAS suite breadth68
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GM ProGrade Safety standard across the range (Pro through Denali): automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, IntelliBeam auto high beams, following distance indicator. Adaptive cruise, blind-zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and HD Surround Vision remain optional on Pro/Elevation and are only standard on SLT and above.

Automatic emergency braking performance72
#3 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

IIHS front crash prevention on the Silverado/Sierra 1500 platform earned Advanced-to-Superior daytime vehicle-to-vehicle results with functional pedestrian detection; nighttime pedestrian performance trails best-in-class Ford/Toyota systems.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage65
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Blind Zone Alert with Lane Change Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Braking are available but optional on Pro/Elevation; Advanced Trailering extends blind-spot coverage along attached trailer length on properly equipped trucks. Standard on SLT/AT4/Denali.

Lane keeping & centering62
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning is standard, but true hands-on lane centering is only offered as part of Super Cruise on Denali/AT4X. Base LKA is corrective/oscillatory in reviews — adequate but not confidence-inspiring on curves.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist68
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Full-speed-range adaptive cruise with stop-and-go is available (Driver Alert Package) and standard from SLT up, and integrates with Super Cruise on Denali/AT4X. Behavior is smooth on freeways but gap tuning and resume are less polished than BlueCruise-equipped Fords.

Hands-free driving availability85
#5 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Super Cruise (hands-free highway driving with automatic lane changes) is available on Sierra 1500 Denali, Denali Ultimate, and AT4X — GM's most mature ADAS with 750,000+ miles of mapped divided-highway coverage. Not offered on Pro/Elevation/SLT, but the availability itself is a real differentiator among full-size trucks.

Headlight performance58
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

LED headlights with IntelliBeam auto high beams are standard, and Denali gets adaptive matrix LED elements, but IIHS ratings on the shared Silverado 1500 platform have returned Marginal-to-Acceptable results depending on trim/beam configuration — not a class leader.

Outward visibility55
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Sightlines are typical for a modern full-size truck — tall belt line, deep hood, thick A/C pillars, and rear headrests can obscure the interior mirror. HD Surround Vision with up to 14 camera views (standard Denali, optional AT4/SLT) plus transparent-trailer view meaningfully compensate at low speeds; base Pro/Elevation rely on a rearview camera only.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability70
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Crew Cab (dominant body style) offers ~65 in rear shoulder room with wide-opening rear doors, exposed lower LATCH anchors on outboard positions, and three top tethers. Center position uses seatbelt only; the flat rear floor and generous legroom make rear-facing installs and three-across attempts easier than most rivals.

4Space & ComfortOne of the Sierra 1500's strongest categories.2.89B-

Cargo box volume of the volume Crew Cab Short Box configuration; longer boxes offer up to 89.1 cu ft.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions76
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

MultiPro six-function tailgate remains a class-standout utility feature standard on SLT and above; deep center console, generous under-rear-seat storage, and available CarbonPro composite bed (AT4X/Denali Ultimate) round out a strong storage package. F-150's Pro Power Onboard and interior work surface edge it out on innovation.

Seat comfort74
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

SLT/Elevation buckets are broadly supportive with heated and ventilated fronts; Denali steps up to perforated leather and massaging front seats with Alpine Umber option, and Denali Ultimate adds semi-aniline hides. Rear bench is roomy and well-cushioned in Crew Cab.

Ride quality66
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

On-road ride is composed and well-damped, aided by Adaptive Ride Control (Magnetic Ride) on Denali Ultimate and AT4X; base rear leaf-spring setup runs firmer than the coil-sprung Ram 1500 and remains busier over broken pavement, especially unladen.

Cabin quietness72
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Post-2024 interior refresh brought upgraded sound insulation and standard active noise cancellation; acoustic-laminated front side glass on higher trims yields a hushed highway cabin comparable to F-150 XLT/Lariat if a touch behind Ram Limited.

Climate & comfort features76
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Premium-oriented lineup with heated front seats and heated steering wheel standard from Elevation, heated/ventilated fronts plus dual-zone climate on SLT, heated rear outboard seats and tri-zone climate on Denali, and 16-way massaging seats plus power-folding headrests on Denali Ultimate. Remote start with remote climate is standard across the range.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Sierra 1500's weakest categories.0.93F
Base MSRP
$44,090 (2026 Sierra 1500 Pro Double Cab 2WD, incl. $2,195 destination)
65/100
#5 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Sierra 1500 no longer offers a Regular Cab, so the Pro Double Cab 2WD is the entry point. 2026 continues the 2024 refresh with a modest year-over-year MSRP walk (~$500–$800) over the 2025 Pro's ~$43,590. Sierra carries a modest premium over the mechanically identical Silverado 1500 WT.

Volume-Trim Price
~$61,000 (Elevation/SLT Crew Cab 4WD 5.3L V8 as typically equipped; range $52K–$92K across trim ladder)
42/100
#5 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Sierra 1500's volume trims skew richer than F-150 XLT or Ram Big Horn because GMC's mix leans heavily on Denali (~25%+ of Sierra sales) alongside SLT/Elevation. A typical Elevation or SLT Crew Cab 4WD with 5.3L V8, package uptake, and popular options lands in the low $60Ks — appreciably higher than F-150 XLT SuperCrew ($54.5K) and reflective of Sierra's Premium positioning.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$7,300 over 5 years
49/100
#10 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Sierra 1500 5-year maintenance and repair sits mid-pack for full-size gas trucks — parts are commodity and dealer service is widely available, but the higher Denali/AT4 mix drives more premium wear items (larger wheels/tires, off-road brakes on AT4). Slightly above F-150 due to trim mix.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~60% of MSRP retained after 5 years
40/100
#2 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Sierra 1500 holds value slightly better than Silverado 1500 due to Denali halo demand, and roughly on par with F-150. Well behind Toyota Tundra and Tacoma on residuals but above Ram 1500 and typical mainstream trucks. Diesel variants and Denali trims retain best.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
0/100
#3 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GM standard bumper-to-bumper coverage — the industry floor for full-size trucks, matching Ford, Ram, and Toyota but well behind Hyundai/Kia's 5/60 coverage.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain (6 yr / 100,000 mi corrosion)
0/100
#7 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GM standard powertrain coverage — segment floor for full-size trucks, matched by Ford/Ram/Toyota but far behind Nissan Titan's 5/100k and Hyundai's 10/100k. Duramax diesel emissions components carry federally-required 8-year/80,000-mile coverage.

Complimentary maintenance & perks55
#5 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GMC includes 1 complimentary maintenance visit (first oil change/tire rotation), plus 5-year OnStar Premium Plan trial, 5-year Connected Services trial, and 5-year/60,000-mile Roadside Assistance. Denali trims add elevated concierge perks. Meaningfully behind Toyota's 2-year ToyotaCare on Tundra and Ram's more generous connected trials, but slightly ahead of Ford's zero-maintenance package.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$31,700 (≈$24,400 depreciation + $7,300 maintenance)
51/100
#4 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

$61,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (60% retained, or about $36,600) leaves about $24,400 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $31,700 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.14C
Predicted reliability57
#4 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Consumer Reports has rated the GM T1XX full-size pickups (Silverado/Sierra) at or below average for predicted reliability in recent years, with owner complaints concentrated on 5.3L/6.2L V8 lifter failures (DFM/AFM), 10-speed shift quality, and infotainment glitches. The 2026 refresh brings a new front fascia and expanded 16.8-inch screen, which introduces fresh first-year software risk that offsets platform maturity gains.

Brand reliability track record55
#3 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GMC sits mid-pack in J.D. Power VDS and Consumer Reports brand rankings — better than a few domestic rivals but well behind Toyota/Lexus and Honda. Multi-year brand scores hover near the industry average.

Recall & TSB history55
#1 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The T1XX Sierra has accumulated a substantial stack of NHTSA recalls across the 2019+ generation (tailgate latch, brake booster, seat-belt anchor, ABS software, 6.2L crankshaft/connecting-rod campaign in 2024) plus repeated TSBs for 10-speed shift shudder and infotainment. Volume is elevated for a mature platform, though most items are software or targeted-VIN recalls rather than fleet-wide safety flaws.

Powertrain durability reputation55
#5 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Sierra's engine lineup is a mixed bag: the 3.0L Duramax I6 diesel has earned a solid durability reputation, but the 5.3L L84 and 6.2L L87 V8s with Dynamic Fuel Management have well-documented lifter/camshaft failures, and the L87 was subject to a 2024 crankshaft/rod recall. The 10-speed Hydra-Matic has prior shudder TSBs. The 2.7L Turbo HO has improved post-2022 but lacks long-term high-mile data.

Interior material quality78
#5 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GMC leans hard into premium materials to justify the price premium over Silverado — the volume Denali/AT4 trims that dominate the mix use real open-pore wood, brushed aluminum, quilted leather, and high-quality switchgear. Denali Ultimate is genuinely luxury-tier. Base Pro/Elevation trims retain hard plastics but represent a small share of sales.

Fit & finish66
#5 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Fort Wayne and Silao assembly has produced generally consistent panel gaps and trim alignment, but the platform has scattered complaints about interior rattles, tailgate alignment, and infotainment lag. The 2026 refresh brings a new interior layout that carries first-model-year assembly risk.

Dealer & service network82
#4 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Buick-GMC dealers combined with shared Chevrolet service infrastructure yield near-nationwide coverage, with roughly 1,500 GMC franchises in the US. Service satisfaction is average — not class-leading like Lexus but comfortably above sparse networks like Rivian.

Massive parts commonality with Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Yukon, and Escalade means abundant OEM and aftermarket support, competitive DIY pricing, and quick nationwide fulfillment. Repair costs run mid-tier — cheaper than Ram's higher-labor cabin and cheaper than European rivals but higher than a base F-150 due to Denali-tier trim parts.

Touchscreen size
13.4 in (7 in on base Pro)
51/100
#6 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

13.4-inch color touchscreen is standard on the volume Elevation trim and above, carried forward from the 2024 mid-cycle refresh; base Pro trim gets a smaller 7-inch display.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness76
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Google Built-In interface with Snapdragon-class hardware is generally quick and logical with useful physical shortcut keys retained; reviewers note occasional lag on the map screen and a menu structure that pushes some functions deeper than the old system.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto88
#4 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard across every trim including the base Pro, matching best-in-class truck practice.

Voice control & native navigation82
#4 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Google Built-In brings Google Assistant natural-language voice control and Google Maps as the native navigation, one of the strongest OEM voice/nav stacks in the segment.

Audio system quality72
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Six-speaker system standard; 7-speaker Bose Premium Series available on Elevation/AT4/SLT and standard on Denali and above — solid but not class-leading for a premium truck.

Digital instrument cluster78
#6 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

12.3-inch reconfigurable full-digital driver display is standard on Elevation and above with multiple layouts and navigation integration; Pro retains an analog cluster with a smaller info screen.

OTA update capability68
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GM Ultifi software platform supports whole-vehicle OTA updates and has delivered infotainment/feature refreshes, but the cadence and scope of meaningful additions still trails Tesla and Rivian.

Companion app & remote functions68
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

myGMC app covers remote start, lock/unlock, locate, and vehicle status; core connected features work with a trial then require a paid Connected Services subscription, and no true phone-as-key on this platform.

Charging ports & device power75
#10 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Multiple USB-C ports front and rear, wireless charging on Elevation and above, and 120V bed/cab outlets available; onboard AC power capability trails F-150 PowerBoost hybrid since the gas/diesel Sierra lacks a large inverter.

Keyless & remote access70
#10 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Keyless open/start standard on Elevation and above with remote vehicle start and the MultiPro power tailgate available/standard on upper trims; no phone-as-key offered on the volume trim.

Camera & parking aids78
#5 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Available HD Surround Vision with up to 14 camera views including Transparent Trailer for towing, rear parking sensors standard, and front sensors on upper trims — strong parking/trailering camera suite versus rivals.

Head-up display availability62
#4 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Color HUD is limited to Denali Ultimate and AT4X trims and not available on the volume Elevation/SLT configurations most buyers choose.

Kid & car-seat practicality68
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Crew Cab's 43.4" rear legroom, near-flat floor, wide-opening rear doors, and exposed lower LATCH on outboard rear seats make daily kid loading easy for a truck, and the 60/40 rear bench flips up over lockable under-seat bins for strollers. Downsides shared with the class: tall step-in on 4x4 (~22" without running boards), no center LATCH, and rear-facing top tethers route behind headrest cutouts that are fussy with bulky seats.

Family safety package68
#4 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GMC Pro Safety Plus is standard on all 2026 trims (Auto Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indicator, IntelliBeam, rear seat reminder), and Crew Cab holds a 5-star NHTSA overall rating. Adaptive cruise and HD Surround Vision are not standard until SLT, and IIHS still rates the updated moderate-overlap front test Marginal/Poor on the current generation — meaningful gaps on the SLE trim families actually price into.

Family road-trip comfort74
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Crew Cab delivers stretch-out rear space, quiet post-refresh cabin, standard rear USB-C and rear vents on SLT+, and Denali adds heated/ventilated fronts plus heated outboard rears, dual-zone auto climate, and massage seats on Denali Ultimate. A tonneau turns the 5'8" bed into lockable multi-day luggage storage. Ride is composed rather than plush (leaf-sprung rear on all but AT4X, which uses Multimatic DSSV shocks), and rear amenities require the volume Denali price point to be complete.

Daily driving ease63
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

10-speed automatic pairs well with the 5.3L/6.2L V8s and the 3.0L Duramax; the 310-hp / 430-lb-ft 2.7L TurboMax on lower trims provides real low-end torque for traffic. Super Cruise (available on SLT+ and standard on Denali Ultimate) is the segment's most polished hands-free system and materially cuts commute effort. Working against it: Crew Cab 5'8" is ~231.7" long with tall step-in and truck-scale sightlines that never disappear.

Commuting cost efficiency50
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Volume 5.3L V8 4x4 Crew Cab returns ~17 MPG combined and the 2.7L TurboMax 4x4 ~18 MPG — expensive per commuting mile, with no hybrid option to match F-150 PowerBoost. The 3.0L Duramax I6 is a genuine efficiency play at 23 MPG combined and cuts fuel spend meaningfully, but demands a ~$1,500-$2,500 option premium and volatile diesel pricing. Consumables (oil, tires, brakes) are mainstream.

Parking & maneuverability56
#4 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Crew Cab short-bed is ~231.7" long with a ~47.2-ft turning circle — genuinely awkward in urban lots and parallel spots. HD Surround Vision (available SLT, standard AT4/Denali) plus up-to-15 available camera views for towing help, but nothing shrinks the footprint; the MultiPro Tailgate helps loading, not parking.

Work capability85
#3 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Max tow rating up to ~13,300 lbs (5.3L V8 with Max Trailering Package, 2WD Crew Cab), max payload ~2,240 lbs, with four powertrains (2.7L TurboMax, 5.3L V8, 6.2L V8, 3.0L Duramax) and bed lengths of 5'8", 6'6", and 8'. Serious work tool with capacity to spare, though it trails F-150's 13,500-lb/2,440-lb ceilings and lacks a heavy-hauling hybrid analog.

Durability for work duty68
#4 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Sierra shares proven T1XX chassis and drivetrains with the Silverado 1500 fleet workhorse, but the recent 6.2L L87 valvetrain warranty campaign (extended limited warranty, lifter/rod-bearing recall on 2021-24 units) and 10L80 transmission complaints on early-refresh trucks weigh on its work-duty reputation. CR predicted reliability sits average-to-slightly-below; body-on-frame construction and easy dealer-network service still count.

Jobsite & upfit practicality78
#5 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

MultiPro Tailgate (six functions including inner gate/step) remains the segment's most useful factory tailgate, and the available CarbonPro composite bed (AT4X/Denali) resists dents and cargo damage. 120V/400W bed outlets, 12 factory bed tie-downs, integrated CornerStep bumpers, trailering camera views, and integrated trailer brake controller cover most jobsite needs — but Sierra lacks anything close to F-150 PowerBoost's 7.2 kW Pro Power Onboard, and the Ford Pro upfit ecosystem remains broader.

Long-distance comfort & range80
#5 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Super Cruise hands-free driving is the most mature system in the segment and materially cuts fatigue over multi-hour highway stints; Denali and Denali Ultimate seats are among the best in class (massage/ventilation on Ultimate). 24-gal standard / 28-gal optional tank yields ~475-560 mi range on the 5.3L V8, and the 3.0L Duramax reaches ~660-700 mi between fills. Cabin quiet was materially improved by the 2025 refresh.

Outdoor & adventure capability72
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

AT4 (2" factory lift, rear e-locker, Rancho monotube dampers, skid plates, hill descent control) and AT4X (3" factory lift, front and rear e-lockers, Multimatic DSSV dampers, ~11.2" ground clearance, 32.5° approach, 24.3° breakover, 26.0° departure) are genuine off-road trims, with the AT4X AEV Edition adding boron-steel skid plates and 35" tires. Loses to F-150 Raptor on high-speed desert credentials and to Ram Rebel/TRX successor variants on suspension travel; 400W bed outlet is far short of Ford's 7.2 kW basecamp power.

Gear & luggage flexibility78
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Three bed lengths (5'8"/6'6"/8') paired with the MultiPro Tailgate (load-stop, easy-lift, primary/inner gate with integrated step, work surface), 12 factory tie-downs, lockable under-rear-seat bins, tonneau options, and a large aftermarket rack/hitch ecosystem deliver strong gear flexibility. CarbonPro bed adds abrasion resistance on higher trims. Slightly behind F-150 only on the Mobile Office worksurface and 7.2 kW onboard power for gear.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.21C
Handling & agility56
#10 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Sierra 1500 rides on GM's T1 platform shared with Silverado 1500; the coil-sprung rear (adopted in 2024 refresh) is a step up in composure over the leaf-spring predecessor but body-on-frame mass and long wheelbase keep it behind the Ram 1500. Volume SLT is secure but unremarkable; Denali's optional Magnetic Ride Control and Denali Ultimate/AT4X Adaptive Air Ride noticeably tighten body control, lifting the model average slightly above the Silverado twin.

Steering feel52
#10 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Electric power steering is stable and light-effort but numb, matching the Silverado 1500 setup with only minor tuning differences by trim. On-center precision is adequate for a full-size truck; feedback is largely absent.

Braking confidence68
#3 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Four-wheel discs deliver linear, confidence-inspiring pedal feel; instrumented 60–0 mph stops for Sierra/Silverado 1500 Crew Cab typically fall in the 130–140 ft range depending on tire and mass. No hybrid regen calibration to complicate feel; fade resistance is solid for the class.

Powertrain smoothness & response70
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

The volume 5.3L V8 mated to GM's 10-speed automatic delivers refined, well-calibrated response with imperceptible Dynamic Fuel Management transitions; the optional 6.2L V8 adds urgency and the 3.0L Duramax I6 diesel is exceptionally smooth. The 2.7L Turbo I4 (310 hp / 430 lb-ft) offers strong torque but occasional low-rpm lag. Overall calibration is more polished than the base Silverado spec would suggest.

Drivetrain noise & vibration65
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

V8s produce a pleasant muted rumble under load and are quiet at cruise; the Duramax diesel is one of the smoothest oil-burners in the class with minimal cabin intrusion. Denali trims add acoustic laminated glass and extra insulation lifting cabin hush above Silverado; the 2.7L Turbo I4 is the roughest choice but sees limited volume mix.

Turning circle
46.4 ft (Crew Cab Short Box, 147.4-in wheelbase); ~50 ft (Crew Cab Standard Box, 157.0-in wheelbase)
54/100
#7 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GM spec sheet lists Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Short Box curb-to-curb turning diameter at 46.4 ft, matching the Silverado 1500 twin. Mid-pack for the full-size truck segment — tighter than F-150 SuperCrew (47.8 ft) but wider than the Hummer EV's 4-wheel-steer 37 ft.

Driving position & ergonomics70
#8 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Post-2024 refresh interior brings a standard 12.3-in digital cluster and 13.4-in touchscreen; SLT and up get 10-way power seats with lumbar, and Denali/Denali Ultimate offer massage and 16-way front seats. Commanding tall H-point with excellent forward sightlines; physical HVAC knobs retained. Multi-Pro tailgate aids cargo ergonomics. Ingress requires running boards for shorter drivers.

Fun-to-drive factor57
#10 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Volume SLT/SLE trims are capable and comfortable workhorses without much enthusiast appeal; the 6.2L V8 and AT4X off-road package inject genuine character (Multimatic DSSV dampers, front/rear e-lockers), and Denali Ultimate's rear-axle steering adds novelty. Model-average lands modestly below F-150 (58), reflecting a narrower enthusiast lineup than F-150 Raptor.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Sierra 1500's strongest categories.2.88B-
Standard equipment generosity70
#6 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Volume SLT/Elevation trims come well-equipped after the 2024 mid-cycle refresh: standard 13.4-inch Google built-in touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital cluster, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, GMC Pro Safety Plus (AEB, lane keep, blind-spot, adaptive cruise on most trims), LED lighting and heated cloth/leatherette seats. Better tech content than Ram Big Horn or F-150 XLT for similar money; base Pro remains a fleet-focused stripper.

Feature value per dollar63
#4 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

You pay a clear GMC premium: SLT opens near $54K and Denali Ultimate crests $85K, running 5–10% above equivalent Silverados that share the same platform, engines and hardware. The Denali Ultimate's open-pore wood/real-leather interior genuinely justifies the ask against Ram Limited, but mid-range trims offer weaker bang-for-buck than a comparably equipped F-150 XLT or Silverado LT.

Trim & configuration breadth83
#3 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Very broad lineup: eight trims (Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, Denali Ultimate), three cab styles (Regular on Pro only, Double, Crew), three bed lengths (5.8, 6.6, 8.0 ft), four powertrains (2.7L Turbo HO, 5.3L V8, 6.2L V8, 3.0L Duramax diesel) and 2WD/4WD. Only the F-150 matches this configurability in the segment, and the Duramax diesel plus AT4X off-road spec are meaningful differentiators.

Sales popularity & market acceptance74
#4 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Sierra 1500 is a top-three full-size truck by US volume — roughly 280K units in 2024 CY, trailing F-Series (~750K) and Silverado 1500 (~530K) but well ahead of Ram 1500, Tundra and Titan. Sales have been steady-to-growing since the 2019 redesign; Denali mix accounts for the majority of transactions.

Brand desirability & image82
#2 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GMC's "Professional Grade" positioning and the Denali sub-brand carry genuine cachet in the full-size truck market, with above-average loyalty and consistently stronger resale than the mechanically identical Silverado. Denali Ultimate is the aspirational nameplate that pulls buyers up from Chevy and cross-shops against Ram Limited Longhorn and F-150 Platinum.

Deals & incentive availability75
#7 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

GM applies aggressive Sierra 1500 incentives — cash allowances of $2,000–$5,000, subvented GM Financial APR/lease programs, competitive-conquest bonuses and healthy dealer stock. Buyers routinely transact $3–5K below MSRP outside of AT4X and Denali Ultimate, which run closer to sticker. Incentives lag Silverado slightly (GMC protects margin) but remain meaningful.

Model freshness63
#9 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

T1XX-platform Sierra 1500 launched for MY2019, received a major 2022 Denali/Denali Ultimate interior overhaul, and a further 2024 mid-cycle refresh (standard 13.4-inch screen, revised front fascias, expanded Super Cruise). By 2026 the generation is 8 model years old with a next-gen replacement expected around 2028, so mid-cycle risk is moderate — the truck is current but no longer fresh.

Critical reception & awards74
#5 of 11 Full-Size TrucksCompare all →

Reviewers consistently praise the Denali Ultimate's segment-leading interior (Car and Driver and MotorTrend have called it the best cabin in a mainstream pickup), the Duramax diesel, and Super Cruise hands-free driving. Sierra rarely wins all-around full-size shootouts (F-150 typically takes them, Ram wins ride/luxury) but frequently makes podium finishes and top-recommended lists. No NACTOY or MotorTrend Truck of the Year wins for the current generation.
