The verdict
A struggling mid-size suv, strong on ownership and held back by technology.
The 2017 Santa Fe is a genuinely 7-seat, 3-row mid-size SUV priced from $26,245 and backed by a segment-best 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, with a roomy, quiet second row and a useful 5,000-lb tow rating. The tradeoffs are real, though: the 3.3L V6 is tied to documented bearing-wear issues and a below-average Consumer Reports reliability score, fuel economy trails four-cylinder rivals at 20-21 MPG combined, and driver-assist tech and a modern touchscreen are locked behind the priciest Ultimate trims. It's a strong buy for families who want three rows and a long warranty on a budget, less so for anyone chasing efficiency, resale value, or the latest tech.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Genuinely usable second row in a standard 3-row layout
- Real towing capability for a crossover
- Segment-leading warranty coverage
What holds it back
- Documented 3.3L V6 engine reliability concerns
- Below-average fuel economy
- Driver-assist safety tech mostly locked to top trims

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Santa Fe's weakest categories.0.81F
Sole engine for the 2017 long-wheelbase Santa Fe (not Sport): 3.3L Lambda II GDI V6, unchanged output for the mid-cycle facelift year.
Peak torque for the 3.3L V6, the only powertrain offered on the 3-row Santa Fe in 2017.
Edmunds' own instrumented test of an AWD Limited Ultimate is the most reliable 0-60 figure found; third-party estimation sites (automobile-catalog, Motor Matchup) claim 6.2-6.7s but those are calculated/estimated rather than measured.
The naturally aspirated V6 delivers smooth, predictable power with no turbo lag, but reviewers noted the 290-hp output feels merely adequate rather than strong for a nearly 4,150-lb 3-row crossover, especially under full load.
The 6-speed automatic (unchanged for 2017, versus competitors already moving to 8- and 9-speed units) shifts smoothly in normal driving but reviewers noted it can feel a step behind the class in responsiveness and gear spacing.
Manufacturer-rated max towing for the V6 Santa Fe when equipped with the factory tow prep package.
HTRAC AWD is available across the trim range (SE, Limited, Limited Ultimate) as an option over standard FWD, using an electronically controlled on-demand torque distribution system with a locking center coupling — competent but not the most sophisticated system in the segment (no low range or driver-selectable terrain modes on this model).
A pavement-oriented crossover with modest 7.3-inch ground clearance, no low-range gearing, no locking differential, and no off-road-focused trim or protective hardware.
Single powertrain only — the 3.3L V6 is the sole engine offered on the long-wheelbase Santa Fe for 2017 (the smaller Santa Fe Sport, a separate nameplate, carries the turbo-4 options); no hybrid or PHEV variant exists for this generation.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Santa Fe's weakest categories.0.30F
EPA combined rating for the 3.3L V6, the sole powertrain on the 2017 long-wheelbase Santa Fe. FWD is the volume/base drivetrain configuration.
EPA city rating, identical across FWD and AWD configurations.
EPA highway rating for the FWD (volume) configuration.
Computed from the 18.8-gallon fuel tank and EPA combined MPG; fueleconomy.gov publishes this figure directly.
EPA's standard annual fuel cost estimate at 15,000 mi/yr, regular unleaded, for the FWD configuration.
The 3.3L V6 runs on regular unleaded across all trims — no premium recommendation or requirement, keeping running costs straightforward.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.84C-
NHTSA's full 5-star overall rating for the 2017 Santa Fe Sport, with a 4-star rollover result the only sub-score below 5.
IIHS rated the Santa Fe Sport Good on moderate overlap front, driver-side small overlap, side impact, roof strength and head restraints, but the passenger-side small overlap test came back Acceptable overall with a Marginal structure rating, and all three headlight configurations tested Poor. TOP SAFETY PICK+ applied only to vehicles built with the optional front crash prevention system, which is not equipped on the volume SE trim, so the base configuration carries the crashworthiness results without the award.
The volume SE trim carries none of AEB, adaptive cruise, lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring as standard equipment — blind-spot monitoring first appears standard on Limited and the Ultimate packages, and AEB/ACC/LDW are bundled only into the $1,550 Ultimate Tech package on the range-topping 2.0T Ultimate and Limited Ultimate trims.
When equipped via the optional Ultimate Tech package, IIHS front crash prevention testing rated the system Superior, avoiding collisions at both 12 mph and 25 mph test speeds; the system also includes pedestrian detection.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on Limited and both Ultimate trims (alert-only, no active steering/braking intervention) but absent on the base SE — the volume trim most buyers configure.
Only lane departure warning is offered (no lane-keep assist or centering), and only as part of the Ultimate Tech package on the range-topping Ultimate trims — absent entirely on the volume SE trim.
Smart Cruise Control with stop/start, reviewed favorably by outlets covering the Ultimate Tech package, is available only as a $1,550 option on the 2.0T Ultimate and Limited Ultimate trims — no adaptive cruise exists anywhere else in the lineup.
No hands-free highway driving system existed on the 2017 Santa Fe Sport at any trim or option level; the most advanced assist available is optional adaptive cruise with lane departure warning, which requires the driver's hands on the wheel.
IIHS tested all three headlight configurations offered on the 2017 Santa Fe Sport (including HID projector and curve-adaptive setups) and rated every one Poor for excessive glare and inadequate curve illumination.
Reviewers noted a sizable rear-quarter blind spot from the small rear side glass and thick D-pillar, partially offset by a standard blind-spot mirror; forward and side sightlines otherwise typical for the mid-size SUV class.
The 5-seat Santa Fe Sport's rear doors and bench offer workable LATCH access typical of the segment, with no notable complaints in contemporary reviews about anchor depth or clearance, but also no specific praise for ease beyond segment norms.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Santa Fe's strongest categories.2.13C
The long-wheelbase Santa Fe (distinct from the 5-seat Santa Fe Sport) is a standard 3-row, 7-seat SUV across the entire 2017 lineup.
Front headroom is mid-pack for the segment; sunroof-equipped Ultimate trims lose a fraction of an inch versus non-sunroof trims.
Front legroom sits toward the low end of the mid-size SUV band, typical of the era's front-seat packaging.
Second-row headroom is a genuine strength versus segment peers thanks to the tall, upright roofline of the LWB Santa Fe.
Second-row legroom is excellent for the segment, a notable practicality advantage for families.
The third row (35.7 in headroom, 30.9 in legroom) is genuinely kid-friendly and usable for short trips, but adults are cramped for anything but very short stints — typical of a crossover-based 3-row rather than a purpose-built one.
Cargo volume behind the second row is on the smaller side of the mid-size SUV band, reflecting the tight 13.5 cu ft available with all three rows in use.
Maximum cargo volume with all rear seats folded is competitive mid-pack for the mid-size SUV segment.
Console, door, and underfloor storage are competitive but conventional for the class — no standout storage innovation.
Front seats are well-regarded as comfortable and supportive, especially on leather-trimmed Ultimate models with heating/ventilation, though cushioning is unremarkable on cloth SE trims.
The suspension soaks up most bumps comfortably, though 19-inch-wheel Ultimate trims ride noticeably firmer on rough pavement.
Reviewers specifically praised the lack of intrusive wind and road noise, giving the cabin a relaxed, composed feel at speed.
Heated front seats are available from the SE Premium package up, with heated/ventilated front seats, heated second row, and a panoramic sunroof reserved for the SE Ultimate/Limited Ultimate trims — comfort features exist but are gated to upper trims.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Santa Fe's best-graded category.2.95B-
Entry price for the 5-seat Santa Fe Sport (the US nameplate for this registry model in MY2017) sits mid-pack for a mainstream mid-size SUV.
The best-selling configuration in this era paired the base 2.4L engine with AWD and the Popular equipment package rather than the base FWD trim or the 2.0T.
RepairPal's average annual repair cost for the 2017 Santa Fe is below the segment average; combined with typical scheduled-maintenance spend for a mainstream mid-size SUV this lands in the middle of the normalization band.
Third-generation (2013–2018) Santa Fe/Santa Fe Sport models depreciated faster than the current generation's reported retention figures, consistent with Hyundai's weaker resale reputation in this era before brand perception improved.
Standard Hyundai basic warranty for MY2017, ahead of the segment's typical 3yr/36,000mi.
Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty was a segment-leading differentiator throughout this generation and remains the longest coverage in the class.
MY2017 predates Hyundai's Complimentary Maintenance Program (which began with MY2020+ vehicles), so no scheduled maintenance was included. However, every 2017 Hyundai came with 5-year/unlimited-mile 24-hour roadside assistance at no charge, placing this in the basic-roadside-only band.
$29,450 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (42% retained, or about $12,369) leaves about $17,081 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $22,281 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.37D
Consumer Reports flagged this generation's reliability as below average, with engine-related trouble reports rising sharply around this model year; J.D. Power's retrospective predicted-reliability figure is more favorable, so signals are mixed but skew negative given the documented engine complaints.
Hyundai's contemporaneous J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study standing was strong for the brand as a whole, even though this specific model's powertrain had a documented issue.
NHTSA lists six recalls touching this exact model year, including two safety-critical ones: a 3.3L crankshaft/bearing-wear recall specific to MY2017 engines and a 2016-2018 ABS module fire-risk recall; a 2024 NHTSA petition specifically named the 2017 Santa Fe's 3.3L Lambda II engine, and Hyundai has since faced litigation over Lambda engine defects.
The 3.3L Lambda II GDI V6 used in this exact generation has a well-documented pattern of rod-bearing failures, thrown bearings and excessive oil consumption past ~100k miles, serious enough that Hyundai issued an extended engine warranty for 2013-2019 3.3L Santa Fe vehicles and owners have pursued litigation over how that program was administered.
Contemporary reviews consistently praised the cabin materials and switchgear as a cut above the mainstream-crossover segment norm for the price.
No pattern of assembly complaints (rattles, panel-gap issues) surfaced in owner or press reviews for this model year; Hyundai's initial-quality standing industry-wide was solid in this period.
Hyundai's US dealer network in this period was broad enough for adequate nationwide coverage but smaller and less dense than the top full-line brands, with mid-pack dealer-service-satisfaction scores typical of a mainstream brand.
Routine parts and service pricing are normal for a mainstream brand with a large dealer footprint and wide aftermarket support, but the documented 3.3L engine failure mode carries a costly full engine replacement when it occurs, which weighs down an otherwise favorable picture.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe Santa Fe's lowest-graded category.0.11F
The 2017 refresh made a touchscreen standard across the lineup, but 7 inches sits at the floor of what today's mid-size SUV segment offers.
Hyundai's 2017-era infotainment was simple and logically laid out with physical knobs/buttons, but the graphics and response are dated by current standards.
Only wired smartphone projection was available — Android Auto came standard for 2017 and Apple CarPlay was added mid-year via a software update, but neither offered a wireless connection.
Built-in navigation was offered only on the top Ultimate trims with basic voice command; most owners relied on phone projection instead, and the native system was unremarkable.
No branded premium audio system (e.g., Infinity/Dimension) is confirmed for the 2017 Santa Fe lineup, suggesting a conventional base/upgraded speaker setup rather than a standout system.
The 2017 Santa Fe uses analog gauges with a small monochrome/color supplemental trip computer display, not a configurable full-digital cluster — that technology arrived on later Hyundai generations.
The 2017 Santa Fe predates Hyundai's OTA update infrastructure; map and software updates required a dealer visit or USB update, not over-the-air delivery.
Hyundai's Blue Link telematics app was available with remote start, remote lock/unlock, and vehicle locate, gated behind a subscription after an initial trial period.
The 2017 Santa Fe offers only a small number of legacy USB-A ports (no USB-C, which did not yet exist in the auto industry) and no wireless charging pad on any trim.
Proximity key entry with push-button start and remote start are available on Ultimate/Limited trims, but the base SE trim relies on a traditional key.
A rearview camera is standard, and the 2017 refresh added an available multi-view (360-degree) camera system plus rear parking sensors on upper trims — strong for the era though not universal across the lineup.
No head-up display was offered on any 2017 Santa Fe trim; the feature did not appear on this generation.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.75C-
Wide-opening doors, a low step-in height, and a genuinely roomy, LATCH-equipped second row make daily car-seat and kid-loading duty easier than most 3-row crossovers of the era, though the tight third row limits it for larger families.
The 2017 refresh added available automatic emergency braking, blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning, but these features are bundled into the pricier Ultimate packages rather than standard on the family-affordable SE trim.
Excellent second-row space and a quiet, comfortable ride support multi-hour trips for four occupants, but a cramped third row and modest 13.5 cu ft of cargo with all seats up limit it once a full family plus gear is aboard.
Reviewers describe the Santa Fe as easy and relaxing to drive in daily traffic, with predictable handling, responsive steering, and a composed ride.
The V6-only powertrain returns EPA-rated 18/24/20 mpg city/highway/combined with AWD, below average for the mid-size SUV segment where four-cylinder rivals commonly post mid-to-high 20s combined.
A 37-ft turning circle is mid-pack for the segment, and the 2017 refresh's available rear parking sensors and 360-degree camera on upper trims help offset the vehicle's large 3-row footprint in tight parking situations.
A 5,000-lb tow rating (with tow prep) is a genuine strength versus most crossover-based 3-row SUVs, giving it real capability for small trailers, campers, or light hauling.
Hyundai's 3.3L V6 and 6-speed automatic were a proven, widely used powertrain combination by 2017 with a reasonably solid reliability reputation, though the Santa Fe is not marketed or fleet-proven as a work vehicle.
The Santa Fe offers standard roof rails and basic cargo tie-downs but no onboard power outlets, washable work-oriented surfaces, or upfit ecosystem — it is a family crossover, not a work-focused platform.
A quiet cabin and comfortable ride make it a decent highway companion, though modest fuel economy (24 mpg highway) shortens the range between fuel stops compared to more efficient segment rivals.
AWD is available and the 5,000-lb tow rating helps with hauling toys, but the Santa Fe has car-like ground clearance and no off-road-oriented hardware, limiting it to pavement and light gravel duty.
80 cu ft of maximum cargo volume with the rear seats folded, standard roof rails, and a flat load floor make it reasonably capable of swallowing bulky gear once the third row is stowed.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.87C-
The Santa Fe is described as stable and predictable through corners with confidence-inspiring composure, but it is a family-oriented crossover with no sporting pretensions — secure rather than engaging.
Steering is accurate and responsive enough for confident daily driving, but the electric power steering of this era is largely numb and offers little genuine road feedback.
Brakes are described as providing fine stopping power with a conventional, adequate pedal feel typical of the segment.
The 3.3L V6 paired with a conventional 6-speed automatic delivers smooth, linear response without the driveability quirks of hybrid or turbocharged systems of the era.
Reviewers specifically noted an absence of intrusive wind, road, and powertrain noise, giving the cabin a relaxed and refined character at speed.
A 37-ft turning diameter is roughly mid-pack for a mid-size, 3-row SUV of this footprint.
A commanding but not overly high seating position, good outward visibility, and straightforward control layout make the Santa Fe comfortable and easy to drive for a wide range of driver sizes.
The Santa Fe is a competent, appliance-like family hauler rather than an engaging drive — comfort and composure are prioritized over any 'take the long way home' character.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Santa Fe's strongest categories.2.50C+
The base 2.4L Santa Fe Sport undercut rivals like the CR-V and RAV4 on price while still including a rearview camera, 17-inch alloys, and — new for 2017 — standard LED daytime running lights; some driver-assist tech remained trim-gated rather than standard.
Hyundai's value-brand positioning gave the Santa Fe Sport strong content-per-dollar versus segment mainstays, reinforced by KBB's 2017 recognition of Hyundai among its 10 Most Awarded Brands.
Three trims (base 2.4L, 2.0T, 2.0T Ultimate) with FWD/AWD choice cover a reasonable span, but there is a roughly $5,500 gap between the base 2.4L and the 2.0T trim with no mid-step, leaving fewer configuration choices than rivals offering four-plus trims.
The Santa Fe nameplate family (Sport + long-wheelbase) hit an all-time US sales record in calendar 2017, with the Sport variant up 12% year-over-year — a strong, rising seller rather than a mid-pack one.
Hyundai's brand image in 2017 was solidly mainstream and improving on quality perception, but it lacked the aspirational halo of Toyota/Honda in the segment and carried no luxury cachet.
Hyundai's value positioning meant Santa Fe Sport buyers regularly had access to 0% APR financing offers and cash incentives typical of the brand's mainstream marketing throughout 2017, well short of the sells-at-MSRP end of the scale.
2017 was a mid-cycle facelift year for the third-generation (2013–2018) Santa Fe Sport: new front/rear styling, a new 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto, and newly available adaptive cruise, forward-collision mitigation and lane-departure warning — meaningful currency, but on a platform four model years into its cycle with a redesign already due for 2019.
The 2017 Santa Fe Sport earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick (with optional front crash prevention) and Hyundai was named among KBB's 10 Most Awarded Brands for 2017 — solid, well-reviewed recognition, but short of the Top Safety Pick+ the following model year and rarely the outright pick over the CR-V/RAV4 in comparison tests.
