The verdict

A struggling mid-size suv, strong on ownership and held back by performance.

The 2020 Santa Fe is a two-row mid-size SUV built around low ownership cost rather than outright capability: a $26,275 starting price, a 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty back a projected $19,584 five-year cost of ownership. It backs that up with a 5-star NHTSA rating and a standard driver-assist suite from the base SE trim. The tradeoffs are a slow base 2.4L engine (185 hp, 0-60 in roughly 8.8 seconds), no third-row option, dated infotainment (wired-only CarPlay/Android Auto, no digital gauge cluster), and weak resale (about 47% retained at 5 years). It suits a budget-minded two-row shopper more than a family needing three rows or a driver who wants some engagement behind the wheel.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe Santa Fe's lowest-graded category.0.02F
Horsepower

9/100
#18 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Base 2.4L GDI four-cylinder is the standard/volume engine for 2020; the 2.0T is optional on upper trims only.

Torque
178 lb-ft (2.4L base engine); 260 lb-ft with optional 2.0T Turbo
13/100
#18 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Peak torque figure for the volume 2.4L powertrain.

0–60 mph time
~8.8s (2.4L FWD volume trim); low-6s to mid-7s with the optional 2.0T Turbo
12/100
#18 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The base 2.4L is the slowest engine in the lineup; instrumented tests of the 2.0T show it roughly 1.5-2s quicker.

Powertrain refinement58
#15 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The base 2.4L is smooth but unremarkable and feels stretched under load; reviewers consistently preferred the quieter, torquier 2.0T for refinement, which the volume trim doesn't get.

Transmission behavior62
#12 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The shared 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly in most reviews, with only occasional reluctance to kick down to the ideal gear noted by one outlet.

Max towing capacity
3,500 lbs max (SEL 2.0T/Limited 2.0T with trailer brake controller); 2,000 lbs on 2.4L-equipped trims
36/100
#17 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Max rating across the configuration range, per the item definition ('any configuration').

AWD/4WD availability58
#15 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

HTRAC AWD is optional (not standard) across every 2020 trim with a basic on-demand torque-split system plus a driver-selectable lock mode and Snow mode — solid but not a sophisticated terrain-management suite.

Off-road capability24
#14 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Pavement-oriented mid-size crossover with modest ground clearance and no off-road hardware or dedicated trim.

Powertrain lineup breadth42
#9 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Two conventional gas engines only for 2020 (2.4L and 2.0T); hybrid/PHEV variants didn't arrive on Santa Fe until the 2021 facelift on the new N3 platform.

2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.83C-
3SafetyOne of the Santa Fe's strongest categories.3.13B
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4★ frontal / 5★ side / 4★ rollover)
100/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA's 5-star overall rating for the 2020 Santa Fe, confirmed by Hyundai's own press release announcing the result.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness85
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

All six IIHS crashworthiness tests rated Good and front crash prevention rated Superior — TSP-level results — but the award is headlight-gated to LED-equipped trims (SEL Premium package/Limited), so this generation earned Top Safety Pick rather than the plus-tier award on the volume trim.

Standard ADAS suite breadth78
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Forward-collision warning with pedestrian AEB, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, driver attention warning and rear occupant alert are standard from the base SE; the volume SEL trim adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and Safe Exit Assist standard, leaving only the camera-based Blind-View Monitor reserved for Limited.

Automatic emergency braking performance88
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rated the standard AEB system superior against both stationary and moving vehicles at 12 and 25 mph and superior for daytime pedestrian detection across multiple test speeds; this generation's IIHS test protocol did not evaluate nighttime pedestrian AEB.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage72
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and Safe Exit Assist are standard from SEL up (the volume trim) but absent on the base SE, and are alert-only; the camera-based Blind-View Monitor that adds an active visual feed is reserved for the Limited trim only.

Lane keeping & centering66
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Lane Keeping Assist is standard across the range, but this generation offers lane-departure correction rather than true lane-centering (Hyundai's Highway Driving Assist / lane-centering package didn't arrive until the 2021 facelift), and owner/forum reports describe occasional intervention roughness.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist62
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Smart Cruise Control with stop-and-go is standard from the base SE, but there is no combined highway/lane-centering assist product in this pre-facelift generation, and multiple owner reports describe the system's braking/resume behavior as abrupt or inconsistent.

Hands-free driving availability8
#8 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving system was offered on any 2020 Santa Fe trim; Hyundai's Highway Driving Assist (itself hands-on) didn't arrive until the 2021 facelift, years before any Hyundai hands-free system existed.

Headlight performance55
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The volume SEL trim carries halogen projector headlights rated Marginal by IIHS; only the SEL Premium package and Limited trim get the LED projector headlights rated Good, which is also the configuration required for the Top Safety Pick award.

Outward visibility82
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently describe the Santa Fe's sightlines as excellent for the segment, and upper trims add a camera-based Blind-View Monitor that further compensates the remaining blind spots.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability62
#14 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rated LATCH ease of use Acceptable — both rear positions have complete anchor hardware, but the lower anchors sit deep in the seat bight and require some digging to reach, one tier below the top rating.

4Space & ComfortOne of the Santa Fe's weakest categories.1.73C-
Seating capacity
5 seats (no third-row option for 2020)
25/100
#13 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2020 Santa Fe is a strict two-row, 5-passenger mid-size SUV; the three-row alternative was spun off as the separate Santa Fe XL/Palisade.

Front headroom
41.2 in
84/100
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Front headroom matches published cabin dimensions for the DM/NC-generation Santa Fe.

Front legroom
44.1 in
91/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is roomy for the mid-size segment.

Rear headroom
39.2 in
80/100
#14 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Rear headroom is competitive for a two-row mid-size SUV.

Rear legroom
40.9 in
91/100
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Second-row legroom is generous, a benefit of the two-row-only packaging freeing up wheelbase for passenger space.

Third-row usability10
#16 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 Santa Fe offers no third row at all in any trim; buyers wanting three rows had to step up to the separate Palisade.

Cargo/trunk volume
35.9 cu ft behind 2nd row
20/100
#17 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Behind-second-row cargo volume is mid-pack for the segment; the two-row layout aids this figure versus 3-row rivals.

Max cargo volume
71.3 cu ft with rear seats folded
36/100
#16 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Maximum cargo volume with seats folded is average for a mid-size two-row SUV.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions58
#14 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Console bin, door pockets and a shelf-style center console are competitive but unremarkable — no standout giga-console or onboard power features this generation.

Seat comfort68
#6 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers repeatedly called out the front seats as a high point — good padding and a wide range of adjustment — with heated seats standard from SEL up.

Ride quality58
#14 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Ride is composed and stable at speed but noticeably firmer than segment norms, especially on the 19-inch wheels fitted to turbo trims.

Cabin quietness60
#12 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Interior noise is generally muted with fade-away engine noise above ~35 mph, but tire roar is noticeable on coarse pavement.

Climate & comfort features55
#16 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Heated front seats/mirrors and dual-zone climate are standard from SEL, but ventilated seats and heated rear seats are reserved for the top Limited trim.

5Cost of OwnershipThe Santa Fe's best-graded category.3.49B+
Base MSRP
$26,275 (SE FWD incl. destination); AWD adds ~$1,700 on every trim
97/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The fourth-generation (TM) Santa Fe's second model year, unchanged from its 2019 redesign ahead of the mid-2020-revealed 2021 facelift. The SE FWD entry point undercuts most mid-size SUV rivals of the era, including the Toyota Highlander LE and Nissan Murano S.

Volume-Trim Price
~$29,725 (SEL 2.4L AWD); range $26,275 SE FWD to $39,575 Limited 2.0T AWD
93/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

SEL is the trim reviewers steered most shoppers toward — it adds the safety-tech and comfort items base buyers actually want (blind-spot/rear cross-traffic, push-button start, heated leather-trimmed seats) — and AWD is the common configuration outside warm-weather markets.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$3,830 over 5 years (scheduled service + repairs)
87/100
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Published service-cost data places the Santa Fe well below the mid-size SUV average, consistent with Hyundai's reputation for low running costs in this generation, and the 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty covers most early-life repair risk.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~47% of MSRP retained at 5 years
23/100
#9 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Retention sits at the weaker end of the mid-size SUV band — Hyundai's residuals in this generation trailed Toyota/Honda rivals, and this particular model year straddles a facelift (revealed for 2021) that further softened pre-facelift resale.

Basic warranty
5 years / 60,000 miles
100/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Part of Hyundai's long-standing "America's Best Warranty" package, a full year/mileage tier above the domestic 3-year/36,000-mile norm and matching or beating most non-Hyundai/Kia mainstream rivals.

Powertrain warranty
10 years / 100,000 miles (original owner; 5 yr/60,000 mi transferable to subsequent owners)
100/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage for the original owner is best-in-class, doubling the 5-year/60,000-mile norm most non-Hyundai/Kia mainstream brands offered in 2020.

Complimentary maintenance & perks74
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Hyundai's complimentary maintenance program (oil/filter change plus tire rotation at factory intervals for 3 years/36,000 miles, applicable to new 2020–2021 models purchased/leased from Feb 1, 2020) covers roughly the first two-thirds of a typical ownership's scheduled visits, and pairs with a genuinely long 5-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance plan — solid multi-year coverage, though it stops short of full-service plans or connected-service credits some rivals bundled in.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$19,584 (≈$15,754 depreciation + $3,830 maintenance)
78/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

$29,725 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (47% retained, or about $13,971) leaves about $15,754 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,830 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $19,584 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.41C+
Predicted reliability74
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Aggregated JD Power/CR-derived predicted-reliability sources for the 2020 Santa Fe and sibling 2020 Hyundai models (Elantra, Accent, Sonata) cluster in the 80-90/100 JD Power quality-and-reliability band, but the TM-generation Theta II GDI/turbo engine family carries lingering scrutiny that keeps this short of top-tier.

Brand reliability track record68
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Hyundai's brand dependability standing in the surrounding years was mid-to-upper pack: JD Power's Highest Initial Quality award in 2019, and Consumer Reports had Hyundai trending toward the front of the mainstream pack by the early 2020s, though not a top-5 fixture the way Toyota/Lexus/Mazda were.

Recall & TSB history55
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 Santa Fe (TM generation) itself carries a modest, non-systemic recall count for its own model year — a windshield-bonding recall (2020-2021 MY, detachment risk in a crash) and a later tow-hitch-harness fire-risk campaign (2019-2023 MY) — typical rather than clean, and it sits inside a nameplate whose prior generation was central to Hyundai's multi-billion-dollar Theta II engine recall and class-action history, which keeps this from scoring in the top band even though the specific 2020 MY campaigns are moderate.

Powertrain durability reputation54
#14 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The redesigned 2019-2020 (TM) Santa Fe's 2.4L Theta II GDI and 2.0L turbo engines were built from the factory with the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) that Hyundai's Theta II settlement added retroactively to earlier cars — which is precisely why post-KSDS 2019-2020 units were excluded from that settlement, not because the risk was ignored. That is a genuine mitigation versus the notorious 2011-2018 Theta II cars, but the engine family's broader bearing-wear reputation and continued owner reports of oil-consumption/bearing issues on some 2.4L GDI units keep this a 'newer version, no red flags confirmed yet' case rather than a proven-durable rating.

Interior material quality64
#6 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers praised the soft-touch dash and upper-cabin surfaces with contrast stitching as competitive for the mainstream mid-size class, but consistently singled out the glossy, slippery hard plastic on the lower dash/console and thin-feeling standard cloth/optional leather as letting the cabin down.

Fit & finish70
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

No pattern of rattles, panel-gap, or assembly complaints surfaced for the redesigned TM-generation Santa Fe in press or owner-forum material reviewed; assembly is generally described as solid and consistent for the segment.

Dealer & service network72
#12 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Hyundai runs a dense, nationwide US dealer network backed by its long-standing 'America's Best Warranty' program (10-year/100k powertrain, longer bumper-to-bumper than most mainstream rivals), which supports above-average service-network coverage even though satisfaction scores are not class-leading.

Parts availability & repair cost66
#12 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Mainstream Korean-brand parts pricing and dealer availability are normal for the segment — not as cheap or ubiquitous as Toyota/Honda's aftermarket, but not notably expensive or scarce either — and the long powertrain warranty offsets major-component repair cost exposure during the ownership window this scorecard represents.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Santa Fe's weakest categories.1.13D
Touchscreen size
8 in (7 in on base SE)
12/100
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The volume SEL trim carries the 8-inch touchscreen; only the base SE ships with the smaller 7-inch unit.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness68
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The system is praised for large icons, quick response and a display positioned high and close to the driver; physical knobs back up the touchscreen for audio/nav.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto25
#15 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across trims but wired-only for MY2020 — wireless projection wasn't added to Santa Fe until the 2021 facelift.

Voice control & native navigation52
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Built-in navigation with voice command is offered only on the 8-inch/Limited system; most owners bypass it in favor of phone-projection navigation.

Audio system quality62
#9 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Base audio is adequate; the Limited's 630-watt, 12-speaker Infinity premium system is a genuine step up but is confined to the top trim.

Digital instrument cluster32
#15 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

This pre-facelift generation uses analog gauges with a small supplemental TFT trip-computer display, not a configurable full-digital cluster — that arrived with the 2021 redesign's 12.3-inch cluster.

OTA update capability38
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Blue Link-era connectivity on this generation supports over-the-air map/infotainment updates but not whole-vehicle software OTA, which came with later Hyundai platforms.

Companion app & remote functions58
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Blue Link app offers remote start, lock/unlock, and vehicle locate with a widget-based quick-start, but core features are subscription-gated after the initial trial.

Charging ports & device power52
#11 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

USB-A ports front and rear are standard, with a wireless charging pad added on the Limited trim; no USB-C was offered this generation.

Keyless & remote access62
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Proximity key with push-button start and remote start are standard from SEL up; no phone-as-key feature this generation.

Camera & parking aids55
#10 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Rear camera and rear cross-traffic alert are standard from SEL, with Hyundai's blind-spot-view camera (mirrors feed into the cluster) also added at SEL; a full 360-degree Surround View Monitor is reserved for the Limited trim.

Head-up display availability55
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A head-up display is offered only on the range-topping Limited trim, not on the SEL volume trim.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.73C-
Kid & car-seat practicality62
#14 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Wide door openings and a roomy second row make car-seat installation and daily kid-loading straightforward, though the lack of a third row caps family flexibility versus 3-row rivals.

Family safety package70
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Hyundai SmartSense (forward collision-avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, driver attention warning, rear occupant alert) is standard on every 2020 trim, plus a 5-star NHTSA overall rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick on LED-headlight trims.

Family road-trip comfort58
#15 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Comfortable, well-adjustable seats and rear climate vents suit multi-hour trips for four, but there's no rear-seat entertainment and cargo space shrinks quickly once luggage for four is loaded.

Daily driving ease68
#8 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Light steering and composed, tied-down manners at low speed make the Santa Fe an easy, relaxing daily driver, per multiple reviews.

Commuting cost efficiency55
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

EPA-rated 21/27/24 mpg city/highway/combined for the AWD 2.4L is average for a mainstream mid-size SUV — not a standout, not a penalty.

Parking & maneuverability62
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A ~37.6 ft turning circle and standard rear camera with blind-spot-view camera from SEL make city parking manageable for the class, though no surround-view camera on the volume trim.

Work capability38
#16 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Max towing is only 3,500 lbs on the 2.0T (2,000 lbs on the base 2.4L) and there is no bed or heavy-duty running gear — a crossover, not a work tool.

Durability for work duty42
#14 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The Santa Fe is positioned and equipped as a family/commuter crossover with no fleet-duty reputation or hardened running gear; unibody crossover construction is not built for hard-use abuse.

Jobsite & upfit practicality30
#17 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

No onboard power outlets, tie-down provisions, or upfit ecosystem are offered; roof rails are the only gear-carrying hardware.

Long-distance comfort & range62
#11 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Comfortable seats, a largely quiet cabin above 35 mph, and standard SmartSense ADAS support easy highway stints; a roughly 400+ mile highway range on the AWD 2.4L (24 mpg combined, ~68 L tank) is competitive.

Outdoor & adventure capability55
#8 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

AWD is available across trims and roof rails are standard, but there's no low-range or off-road hardware — fine for gravel roads and light trailheads, not genuine off-roading.

Gear & luggage flexibility60
#14 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

60/40-split folding rear seats and standard roof rails give reasonable gear-hauling flexibility, aided by a 71.3 cu ft max cargo figure with the second row down.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.74C-
Handling & agility58
#13 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Handling is described as composed and tied-down but unremarkable — secure in corners without engaging the driver.

Steering feel48
#17 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Steering is light and easy to use around town but offers little genuine road feel or feedback.

Braking confidence58
#13 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

No instrumented stopping-distance data or specific brake complaints surfaced; assumed adequate, class-typical pedal feel and stopping performance.

Powertrain smoothness & response56
#16 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The base naturally aspirated 2.4L is adequate but unremarkable in response; the optional 2.0T is smoother and stronger but not fitted to the SEL volume trim.

Drivetrain noise & vibration58
#14 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Engine noise is audible at low speed but fades into the background by around 35 mph, an inoffensive rather than notably refined character.

Turning circle
37.6 ft (18.8 ft curb-to-curb radius)
55/100
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Turning diameter is typical for the mid-size SUV segment.

Driving position & ergonomics65
#12 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Good seat/wheel adjustability and a well-placed, high-mounted touchscreen support a comfortable driving position with decent sightlines.

Fun-to-drive factor42
#17 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers frame the Santa Fe as competent rather than engaging — pleasant to drive but not something enthusiasts would seek out.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Santa Fe's strongest categories.2.58C+
Standard equipment generosity75
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Even the base SE trim shipped with an 8-inch touchscreen with standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, driver attention warning, and high-beam assist — a stronger base safety-tech set than the 2020 Toyota Highlander LE or Nissan Murano S, which charged extra or restricted some of that suite to higher trims.

Feature value per dollar72
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Contemporary reviews consistently flagged the 2020 Santa Fe as strong value in the mid-size SUV class — roomy for its footprint, well-equipped for the money, and priced below key two-row rivals — without being a standout in performance or capability that would push it higher.

Trim & configuration breadth60
#17 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Five trims (SE, SEL, SEL 2.0T, Limited, Limited 2.0T) across two engines and FWD/AWD give a reasonable spread from value-focused to loaded, but the lineup is two-row only — Hyundai's three-row Santa Fe XL was discontinued and the Palisade took over that role for 2020 — and there is no hybrid/diesel option until the 2021 facelift.

Sales popularity & market acceptance56
#13 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

101,513 units sold in the US in the pandemic-shortened 2020 model year — a steady mid-pack result for the segment, well behind class leaders like the Toyota Highlander but ahead of niche competitors like the Nissan Murano, and roughly flat with the Santa Fe's own recent-year volumes.

Brand desirability & image58
#12 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Hyundai's US brand perception had climbed steadily through the 2010s on the strength of its warranty and JD Power/quality scores, and the 2020 launch of Genesis as a standalone luxury marque helped the core Hyundai brand's image, but it remained a mainstream value-oriented brand rather than an aspirational one in 2020.

Deals & incentive availability66
#11 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Hyundai ran typical-to-generous incentives and 0%-APR financing offers through most of 2020 (pre-dating the 2021 supply-crunch pricing spike), giving buyers real negotiating room without signaling desperation.

Model freshness74
#8 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2020 is the second model year of the fourth-generation (TM) Santa Fe redesigned for 2019, so the platform, styling and tech were still current; Hyundai revealed a mid-cycle facelift for the 2021 model year in June 2020, which trims points for imminent-refresh risk but the change was cosmetic/platform-sharing (N3) rather than a full redesign.

Critical reception & awards68
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 Santa Fe earned IIHS Top Safety Pick (on trims with the optional LED projector headlights) and a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, and was consistently well-reviewed by mainstream outlets as a strong all-rounder in comparison tests — but it was rarely the outright winner over class benchmarks like the Highlander or Telluride, and did not land Car and Driver 10Best or NACTOY recognition this generation.
