The verdict
A struggling compact luxury suv, strong on driving and held back by space.
The 2020 F-PACE is the most fun-to-drive and most practical-looking Jaguar of its era. It has sports-car steering, a 33.5 cu ft cargo hold and a 5,291-lb tow rating, all wrapped in a design that still turns heads. The catch is everything around the drive. It was never crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, it runs on premium fuel at about $3,350 a year, it keeps only about 40% of its value after five years, and Jaguar's reliability record is weak. As a used buy it can be a stylish bargain, but only if you go in knowing those costs.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Genuinely engaging to drive
- Big cargo hold and real towing muscle
- Five years of warranty and free maintenance
What holds it back
- Crash safety is unverified
- Steep depreciation
- Thirsty on premium fuel

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades below the middle of the scale.1.38D
The volume 2020 F-PACE is the 25t with the 2.0L Ingenium turbo four. MY2020 is a carry-over year in the first generation (the facelift arrived for 2021). The US diesel was dropped and the 300 Sport and Checkered Flag limited editions were added.
The 25t's 2.0L turbo four makes 269 lb-ft, which is average for a base engine in a compact luxury SUV.
Jaguar quotes about 6.9 s to 60 mph for the 247-hp 2.0T, which is mid-pack for a base compact luxury SUV. The V6 and V8 trims are much quicker.
The volume 2.0L turbo four is adequate but coarse and noisy when pushed, and it trails BMW's and Mercedes' smoother base fours. The supercharged V6 is responsive and sounds good.
Every trim uses the ZF 8-speed automatic, which shifts smoothly and decisively. Reviewers note some low-speed hesitation and stop/start roughness in the pre-facelift cars.
The F-PACE is rated to tow 2,400 kg when properly equipped, which is at the top of the compact luxury SUV class.
Every 2020 US F-PACE has AWD. The system is rear-biased with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics and offers Adaptive Surface Response and All-Surface Progress Control, and the SVR adds an electronic active differential. There is no low range.
The F-PACE is built for pavement. It has about 8.4 in of clearance, terrain modes and hill descent control, but no skid plates, lockers or off-road trim.
The 2020 US F-PACE offered four tunes of three engines: the 25t and 30t turbo fours, the S supercharged V6 and the SVR V8. The diesel was dropped for 2020, and there was no hybrid or PHEV, so the range narrowed from 2019.
2Efficiency & RangeGrades below the middle of the scale.1.13D
The EPA rates the volume 2.0T AWD at 24 MPG combined, which is middling for a gas compact luxury SUV. The supercharged V6 and V8 trims use much more fuel.
The EPA city rating for the 2.0T AWD is 22 MPG. With no hybrid assist, stop-and-go economy is only average.
The EPA highway rating for the 2.0T AWD is 27 MPG, which trails the best four-cylinder rivals.
A large tank of about 21.9 gal (83 L) and 24 MPG combined give the 25t roughly 525 miles between fill-ups, which is long for the class.
Because it requires premium fuel and averages 24 MPG combined, the 2.0T has a high EPA annual fuel cost.
Every 2020 F-PACE powertrain requires premium unleaded. The US diesel was dropped for 2020 and there is no plug-in option to lower running costs.
3SafetyOne of the F-PACE's weakest categories.0.63F
NHTSA never crash-tested the 2020 F-PACE, and every NCAP field is 'Not Rated'. No X761 model year has carried NHTSA stars, so there is no result to carry forward.
IIHS has published no crashworthiness results for the F-PACE, so the 2020 model has no award and no overlap or side scores, unlike award-winning rivals such as the Q5, GLC and XC60. Nothing points to a structural concern with the aluminum-intensive body, so it sits in the upper part of the 'untested' band.
2020 carries over the 2019 safety specification. Emergency braking, lane keep assist, a driver condition monitor, a rear camera and front and rear parking sensors are standard. Blind-spot monitoring stays optional on the volume 25t/30t trims and adaptive cruise is an extra-cost Driver Assist item, so two core features are missing from most cars.
Camera-based emergency braking with pedestrian detection is standard. IIHS never rated the F-PACE's front crash prevention, so no day or night vehicle or pedestrian result supports a higher score, and the first-generation system trails rivals' radar-fusion setups.
On the volume 2020 trims, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are optional pack items, as they were for 2019. When fitted, Blind Spot Assist actively counter-steers, but most cars on the lot lack it. It became standard only with the 2021 facelift.
Lane Keep Assist is standard but reactive, nudging the car back only near the lane line. Proactive centering requires the optional Adaptive Cruise with Steering Assist, which reviewers rate behind Mercedes, BMW and Volvo systems.
Full-speed stop-and-go adaptive cruise, with Steering Assist in the Driver Assist pack, is optional on the 2020 volume trims. When fitted it works but is less polished than German rivals' systems, and volume cars without the pack get conventional cruise only.
The 2020 F-PACE offers no hands-free highway driving system; its most advanced aid, Adaptive Cruise with Steering Assist, requires hands on the wheel.
The pre-facelift 2020 car has xenon headlights on lower trims, with full LED adaptive units and auto high beam optional or reserved for upper trims; range-wide LED units arrived with the 2021 facelift. IIHS never tested the F-PACE's headlights, so beam performance is unverified.
Forward sightlines are reasonable, but the sloping roofline and thick D-pillars create rear-quarter blind zones. On 2020 volume trims those are covered only by the standard rear camera and parking sensors; the 360-degree surround camera is an option.
Lower LATCH anchors are fitted in both outboard rear seats, with top tethers on all three seatbacks. The rear bench and door openings are about average for the class: two child seats fit comfortably, three across is tight, and the anchors sit in the seat bight, so some digging is needed.
4Space & ComfortThe F-PACE's lowest-graded category.0.60F
Two-row, five-seat SUV on every 2020 trim.
Below-average front headroom for an SUV; the panoramic roof that is standard on the US 25t eats into it.
Front legroom is at the short end of the SUV band.
Adequate rear headroom despite the sloping roofline.
Rear legroom is generous for the compact luxury class, helped by the long 113.1-in wheelbase.
No third row is offered on any 2020 F-PACE.
Cargo space behind the rear seats is among the largest in the compact luxury class.
Folded capacity is competitive for the class.
The pre-facelift cabin has a modest console bin and small door pockets, and no wireless-charging tray (that came with the 2021 redesign). The 40/20/40 rear seat and power tailgate help.
Supportive, sporty front seats with 10-way power adjustment on the base trim; lumbar support was added for 2020. The rear bench is roomy but flat.
Composed and well controlled, but the ride leans firm and gets busy on the larger optional wheels. Adaptive dampers are limited to the S and SVR.
Wind noise is well suppressed, but the 2.0T Ingenium four is gruff under load. Active Road Noise Cancellation did not arrive until 2021.
Dual-zone climate and a panoramic roof are standard. Heated and ventilated seats, a heated wheel, a heated windshield and four-zone climate come only in option packs or on upper trims.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the F-PACE's weakest categories.0.79F
The 2020 F-PACE range opened with the 25t AWD at $45,200, before a $1,025 destination charge.
The 25t Prestige, the leather/navigation trim on the volume 247-hp four, is the typical dealer-stock configuration. It listed at $52,200 plus $1,025 destination, about $350 more than in 2019.
CarEdge projects about $5,500 in 5-year maintenance for the F-PACE, and the pre-facelift car's below-average JLR reliability adds a repair allowance on top. For MY2020, EliteCare covered scheduled service for 5 years/60k miles, so an original owner paid well below this figure out of pocket.
iSeeCars measures a 59.9% five-year loss for the 2020 F-PACE, so it keeps about 40% of its MSRP. That is near the bottom of the compact luxury class, where the average loss is about 49%.
The EliteCare new-vehicle limited warranty runs 5 years/60,000 miles. That beats the 4yr/50k German rivals.
Jaguar offers no longer powertrain term: the powertrain is covered under the 5yr/60k limited warranty.
MY2020 EliteCare bundles 5yr/60k complimentary scheduled maintenance with 5yr/60k 24/7 roadside assistance. That is among the richest included-ownership packages in the class, ahead of BMW's 3yr/36k maintenance and well ahead of Audi and Mercedes. Wear items are excluded.
$53,225 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (40% retained, or about $21,290) leaves about $31,935 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $38,435 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.59D
2020 is the last carry-over year of the pre-facelift first-generation F-PACE (X761), so the hardware has been in production for four years. Consumer Reports and J.D. Power publish no 2020 model rating, which leaves the prediction resting on Jaguar's weak brand standing. Complaint volume is low, and the main pattern is InControl Touch Pro infotainment and electrical faults.
Jaguar and sister brand Land Rover have sat in the bottom third of US dependability rankings for years. J.D. Power placed Jaguar among the three worst brands in its 2020 and 2021 dependability studies, and Land Rover, which shares the Ingenium engines and electronics, finished last in the 2022 study.
Only two NHTSA campaigns cover the 2020 F-PACE, and neither involves the powertrain or fire risk. One fixed an auto-high-beam indicator in software. The other replaced seat-belt automatic locking retractors that could release a child seat early. The later MHEV DC-DC converter and oil-filter-housing recalls start at MY2021. A side-step deployment TSB carries over from 2018.
The volume 25t/30t trims use the Ingenium 2.0T four-cylinder. Owners report oil consumption, timing-chain stretch, coolant leaks and water-pump failures on it. The S uses the older supercharged 3.0 V6 (AJ126), which has a better long-run record. The ZF 8HP automatic is well proven.
This is the final year of the pre-2021 cabin. Reviewers called its design attractive but its materials a step behind German rivals at the price, with hard plastics on the lower dash and doors and switchgear that feels low-rent. The 2021 refresh was largely a response to that criticism.
Assembly on this fourth-year build is generally acceptable. Owner complaints still cite exterior lighting, build quality and electrical gremlins more often than on German or Japanese rivals.
Jaguar's US network is small, roughly 150 retailers mostly shared with Land Rover, and concentrated in metro areas. That leaves large service gaps in rural and interior regions.
Parts are expensive and mostly bought from dealers, with thin aftermarket support. Common out-of-warranty failures, such as the InControl Touch Pro infotainment unit, cost thousands to fix.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the F-PACE's strongest categories.1.73C-
A flat 10-inch touchscreen is standard on every 2020 trim.
InControl Touch Pro looks sharp and keeps physical climate and volume controls, but reviewers note lag and a slow start-up. Its successor, Pivi Pro, is a clear improvement.
Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard for 2020. Wireless projection was not offered.
Navigation Pro with online map features is standard, but the command-based voice control is basic, and most owners will bypass it for phone projection.
Meridian audio is standard on the base trim, and an upgraded Meridian surround system is optional.
The crisp, configurable 12.3-inch Interactive Driver Display is optional on volume trims and standard only on upper or special-edition models; the base car uses analog dials.
Touch Pro gets online map and app-content updates only. JLR's whole-vehicle software-over-the-air capability arrived with Pivi Pro on the 2021 refresh.
The InControl Remote app covers remote lock, locate and climate pre-conditioning, but it needs a subscription and there is no digital key.
USB-A ports and 12V outlets only, with no USB-C and no wireless charging pad. The wireless charger arrived with the 2021 console redesign.
Push-button start and a power tailgate are standard. Keyless entry, a gesture tailgate and the wearable Activity Key are options, and remote climate runs through InControl Remote.
A rearview camera and front and rear parking sensors are standard; the surround-camera system and Park Assist are options.
A laser head-up display is an option on upper trims but not standard on volume trims.
8Use-Case FitOne of the F-PACE's strongest categories.2.20C
Generous rear legroom and a large cargo bay suit family duty, though the high sill and sloping roofline make loading slightly harder.
AEB and lane-keeping assist are standard, but the F-PACE was never crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, and blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise are optional.
There is ample rear space and luggage room, but rear amenities are thin unless optioned, the ride is firm, and the cabin is noisier than the 2021 refresh.
The 8-speed automatic is smooth and the manners composed, but the firm low-speed ride, laggy infotainment and restricted rear three-quarter visibility add friction.
24 MPG combined on premium fuel makes it an expensive commuter, even for the class.
A tight 38-ft turning circle and standard front and rear sensors help, but the car is long for the class, the surround camera is optional, and rear visibility is restricted.
A strong 5,291-lb tow rating and a large cargo hold handle light-to-moderate work well.
An aluminum-intensive luxury chassis and Jaguar's weak reliability reputation make it a poor fit for hard use.
An accessory hitch, cross bars and cargo rails are available, but there is no onboard inverter or other work-oriented equipment.
Steady highway manners and a range of about 520 miles make it a good tourer, held back by the firm ride, road noise and adaptive cruise being optional only.
Standard AWD, about 8.4 in of ground clearance and a 5,291-lb tow rating handle gravel roads and toy hauling fine, but it is no off-roader.
The 40/20/40 rear seat allows pass-through for long items, and 63.5 cu ft of maximum space plus available rails and a hitch cover most gear.
9Driving ExperienceThe F-PACE's best-graded category.2.58C+
The aluminum chassis delivers composed, athletic handling that ranks among the best in the class.
Quick, naturally weighted and precise steering, a hallmark of the X761 chassis.
Reviewers praise its strong stopping power, though some owners dislike the pedal feel.
The volume 247-hp 2.0T is adequate but unrefined, with some turbo lag and an abrupt auto stop/start. The 8-speed automatic is smooth, and the supercharged V6 is much better.
The Ingenium four sounds gruff and coarse when worked hard, and the cabin lacks the active noise cancellation added in 2021.
Mid-pack turning diameter for an SUV.
A sporty, fairly low driving position with good wheel adjustment and physical climate knobs. The rotary shifter, short front legroom and thick rear pillars cost points.
One of the most engaging compact luxury SUVs to drive. The 2.0T dulls it slightly, while the S and SVR are genuinely exciting.
10Value & Market PositionGrades below the middle of the scale.1.69D
For 2020 Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard, and every US F-PACE had AWD and LED headlights. The base 25t still made buyers step up to Premium/Prestige for leather, navigation and the larger Touch Pro screen, and driver assists were options. That is merely class-par for the money.
The F-PACE's $46k entry price matched the X3, GLC and Q5, and five years of free scheduled maintenance is a real plus. But Edmunds flags its subpar cabin materials, clunky infotainment and a base four-cylinder that lags rivals. Combined with steep depreciation, that makes it only fair value.
The 2020 lineup is broad: 25t, Premium, Prestige and Checkered Flag trims on the 247-hp four, 30t on the 296-hp four, the new 300 Sport, the 380-hp supercharged V6 S and the 542-hp SVR. It spans about $46k to $82k. The diesel was dropped for 2020.
The F-PACE was Jaguar's best seller, but US sales fell from about 15,500 in 2019 to 10,900 in 2020. The X3, GLC, Q5 and RX each sell tens of thousands a year, so the F-PACE is a niche, declining player.
Jaguar keeps real British-luxury and design cachet. Weak reliability perception, a thin US dealer network and falling brand volume leave it behind BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Lexus and Porsche in shopper consideration.
Slow-selling, pre-refresh 2020 F-PACEs were heavily discounted, and the 2020 pandemic spring brought subvented APR and lease offers across the luxury segment. That made it one of the more negotiable cars in its class before the 2021 chip shortage tightened inventory.
MY2020 is the fourth and final year of the pre-facelift X761. Its interior and infotainment had aged against rivals, and a major refresh with a new cabin, Pivi Pro and mild-hybrid sixes arrived for 2021, which made the 2020 the outgoing car.
Reviewers praised the looks, engaging handling, passenger room and cargo space. They criticized the ride, infotainment, cabin materials and the base engine, and the F-PACE rarely topped comparisons against the X3, GLC or Q5. Its 2017 World Car of the Year win is its main honor.
