The verdict

A struggling mid-size luxury suv, strong on performance and held back by ownership.

The 2020 Range Rover Sport pairs genuine off-road hardware and an upscale cabin with a 7,716-lb tow rating, making it one of the few luxury SUVs that can actually back up its adventure styling. But it comes with real costs: Land Rover ranked dead last among all brands in J.D. Power's 2023 dependability study (273 problems per 100 vehicles vs. a 186 industry average), and it has never been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS. At $74,250 for the volume HSE trim, 21 MPG combined, and roughly $71,000 in projected 5-year ownership costs, this is a vehicle for buyers who value capability and prestige over peace of mind and running costs.

2020 Range Rover Sport SE/HSE volume trims use the 3.0L turbocharged inline-6 mild-hybrid (P360) rated 355 hp, the generation's base gas engine since the 2018 facelift replaced the supercharged V6.

#2 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

P360 peak torque is 365 lb-ft across a wide 2,000-5,000 rpm plateau, typical of the Ingenium I6 with its electric supercharger.

Land Rover's published 0-60 for the base 2020 P360 is 6.6 seconds; faster engines are available further up the range.

Powertrain refinement76
#4 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The Ingenium I6 MHEV pairs an electric supercharger with the turbo to largely mask lag, delivering smooth, linear power most of the time; reviewers note mild coarseness only under hard, low-rpm throttle before boost fully builds.

Transmission behavior83
#3 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The ZF 8-speed automatic standard across the 2020 range shifts crisply and rarely hunts, a long-praised unit in this segment.

Max towing capacity

#1 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Land Rover rates the 2020 Range Rover Sport gas I6/V8 lineup at 7,716 lbs max towing with the tow package, the figure for the scored P360 volume trim.

AWD/4WD availability92
#1 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Full-time all-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case and Terrain Response is standard across the entire 2020 trim lineup, with Terrain Response 2 and an optional locking rear differential available — sophisticated and universal, not a top-trim-only feature.

Off-road capability70
#1 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Standard air suspension raises ground clearance toward 10.9 in. with 30-33 degree approach and 27.3-31 degree departure angles and a 33.5 in. wading depth, plus Terrain Response 2 and an optional locking rear diff — genuine off-road hardware for a luxury SUV, though the sportier body and street-biased tuning trail a dedicated off-road trim like a TRD Pro or Bronco.

Powertrain lineup breadth88
#1 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

2020 lineup spans two mild-hybrid I6 states of tune (P360/P400), a supercharged V8 (P525 Autobiography), a Td6 diesel, a plug-in hybrid (P400e), and the SVR — a wide, electrified spread across the range.

NHTSA overall rating
Not rated by NHTSA
0/100
#11 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA has never crash-tested the Range Rover Sport in the L494/facelift generation the 2020 model belongs to; no overall star rating exists for 2020 or any other year of this generation.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness35
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS has not crash-tested the Range Rover Sport — no Top Safety Pick/TSP+ designation, no individual crashworthiness subscores, no award of any kind exists for this nameplate in 2020 or any other model year.

Standard ADAS suite breadth52
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

On the volume HSE trim, a rearview camera, front/rear parking sensors, low-speed autonomous emergency braking, and lane departure warning with lane keep assist are standard, but the Drive Pack (blind-spot monitor, driver condition monitor, traffic sign recognition, adaptive speed limiter) is standard only on HSE Silver Edition and above, and the Drive Pro Pack (adaptive cruise with Stop & Go, high-speed AEB, Blind Spot Assist) is a separate, costlier option on every trim.

Automatic emergency braking performance48
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

No independent IIHS front-crash-prevention test exists for this nameplate. Low-speed AEB using forward radar/camera is standard on the HSE, but the higher-speed AEB function is reserved for the optional Drive Pro Pack, so the as-delivered volume-trim system is more limited than a standard-suite comparison implies.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage40
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Blind-spot monitoring is not standard on the volume HSE for 2020 — it requires the optional Drive Pack (alert-only, with closing-vehicle sensing) that is only standard from HSE Silver Edition up — and rear cross-traffic/surround coverage sits further up in the optional Driver Assist Pack rather than being offered standalone.

Lane keeping & centering50
#10 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Lane departure warning and a base lane keep assist are standard on the HSE, but true continuous lane-centering behavior is tied to the optional Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist in the Drive Pro Pack — the standard system is corrective warning/assist rather than confident centering.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist55
#10 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go is available via the optional Drive Pro Pack and works across the speed range with light steering input to help keep the vehicle centered, but it is optional on every 2020 trim rather than standard, and no instrumented review was found specifically praising its refinement on this model year.

Hands-free driving availability10
#6 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free highway-driving system (comparable to BlueCruise/Super Cruise/FSD) was offered on the 2020 Range Rover Sport; the most advanced available tech is hands-on adaptive cruise with steering assist via the optional Drive Pro Pack.

Headlight performance50
#7 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2018 facelift (carried into 2020) brought new standard LED headlight units across the range, but the higher-end Matrix LED and Pixel-Laser LED systems offered in other markets were not approved for US sale, so American-spec 2020 cars top out at standard LED with no IIHS headlight rating to corroborate beam quality.

Outward visibility57
#10 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The high, upright seating position and large glass area give good forward and side sightlines, but reviewers consistently flag a thick B-pillar blind spot and weak rear visibility on this generation; a 360-degree surround camera is available to compensate but only as part of the optional Driver Assist Pack, not standard on the volume HSE trim.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability48
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Two complete sets of LATCH lower anchors are present on the second-row outboard seats, but car-seat-check coverage of this body style has repeatedly flagged the lower anchors as awkward to reach — set into the seat bight behind stiff leather bolsters — which offsets an otherwise roomy, well-tethered rear seat.

4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.33D

In-cabin storage & clever solutions58
#7 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Console bin, door pockets and a flat-folding load floor are competitive but unremarkable; no standout storage innovation versus rivals.

Seat comfort78
#7 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Front seats are broadly praised for long-haul comfort and support; rear bench is comfortable for two though the center position is tight.

Ride quality66
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Air suspension keeps the ride composed and controlled, but reviewers describe a somewhat trucky character with more bounce over big bumps than the full-size Range Rover.

Cabin quietness74
#9 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Acoustic glazing and sound-deadening give a quiet highway cabin typical of the luxury segment, with some wind noise around the mirrors at speed.

Standard Land Rover New Vehicle Limited Warranty for MY2020.

Powertrain warranty
4 years / 50,000 miles (bundled with the basic warranty, not a separate longer term)
0/100
#7 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Land Rover does not extend powertrain coverage beyond the 4 yr/50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper term for MY2020 — well short of the segment's typical 5-10 year powertrain coverage.

Complimentary maintenance & perks35
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

MY2020 Land Rover warranty explicitly excludes routine maintenance (only covers minor adjustments to correct defects for 1 yr/12,500 mi); owners get complimentary roadside assistance for the life of the warranty but no scheduled service plan — the EliteCare bundled-maintenance program arrived on Land Rover models in later model years, not 2020.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$71,020 (≈$47,520 depreciation + $23,500 maintenance)
0/100
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

$74,250 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (36% retained, or about $26,730) leaves about $47,520 in depreciation. Add the projected $23,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $71,020 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the Range Rover Sport's weakest categories.0.55F
Predicted reliability32
#10 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Consumer Reports publishes no predicted-reliability verdict for the 2020 Range Rover Sport but flags the brand as historically unreliable and expensive to repair; J.D. Power's near-launch model score of 76/100 overall included a 70/100 ('Average') Quality & Reliability sub-score, a softer signal than the brand's actual multi-year dependability record would support.

Brand reliability track record16
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

J.D. Power's 2023 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed original owners of 2020 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership and ranked Land Rover dead last of all brands at 273 PP100 against a 186 PP100 industry average — direct dependability data for this exact model year, not an inference from adjacent years.

Recall & TSB history38
#9 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA shows roughly 9 recall campaigns reaching the 2020 Range Rover Sport. Several are purely administrative (incorrect TPMS placard pressure on 20/21/22-inch wheels affecting ~12,000 units; incorrect tire inflation/placard labels on 19-inch-wheel cars; an Auto High Beam instrument-cluster indicator fault on 2018-2020 cars) and don't rise to a safety concern on their own, but 23V044000 names the AJ20-P6 3.0L inline-six — the exact engine family in this gas-powertrain scorecard — for a cam-carrier oil channel that can leak and create an engine-bay fire risk, which is a real powertrain/safety issue rather than a labeling fix. The volume of campaigns plus one fire-risk engine recall on the scored engine keeps this below the 'typical, nothing systemic' band.

Powertrain durability reputation45
#11 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

2020 is the first model year the turbocharged Ingenium inline-six (P360, AJ20-P6, 355 hp MHEV) replaced the old supercharged V6 in the Range Rover Sport, so it entered the market with no long-term track record. Field reports accumulated since then show non-catastrophic but recurring wear: 48-volt belt-starter-generator wear in stop-start/short-trip use, gasoline particulate filter clogging, and rising oil consumption past roughly 80,000 miles, plus this engine family is the one directly named in the 23V044000 cam-carrier fire-risk recall. That lands it as a newer powertrain with real but non-systemic issues rather than either a proven high-mileage design or a known problem engine.

Interior material quality84
#5 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2018-2022 facelift cabin carries over into 2020 with soft-touch surfaces, real wood and metal trim, and supple leather that reviewers rated on par with or above German rivals; the Touch Pro Duo dual-screen layout still looked current for the 2020 model year.

Fit & finish55
#10 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Physical panel fit and the aluminium body structure draw little criticism, but electronics remain the dominant quality complaint for this generation — Touch Pro Duo responsiveness, infotainment glitches and the broader electrical system show up repeatedly in owner reviews, consistent with J.D. Power dependability data attributing most of the brand's problem count to electrical/infotainment faults rather than body or trim defects.

Dealer & service network46
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Land Rover's US dealer network has held around 200 locations for years — workable for a luxury brand but far thinner than BMW's or Mercedes-Benz's, leaving rural and smaller-metro owners with a longer drive to authorized service, and the brand has consistently trailed its sales-satisfaction scores on the service side.

Parts availability & repair cost23
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

RepairPal rates the Range Rover Sport 2.5/5 for reliability (10th of 19 full-size luxury SUVs) with an average annual repair cost of $1,179 — among the worst in its class — and parts are mostly dealer-sourced with limited aftermarket support. The standard air suspension on every Range Rover Sport is a specific expensive failure point: a single air spring runs roughly $1,700, the compressor $2,000+, with full-system replacement reaching $4,000+.

7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.37D
Touchscreen size
10.0 in upper touchscreen (Touch Pro Duo pairs it with a second 10.0 in lower touchscreen)
35/100
#6 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Touch Pro Duo uses twin 10.0-inch HD touchscreens; the normalized spec records the primary (upper) display diagonal.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness42
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Touch Pro Duo looks sharp but owners and reviewers consistently report laggy response, a convoluted menu structure, and occasional screen dropouts.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto58
#6 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across 2020 Range Rover Sport trims, but only via wired connection — wireless projection arrived later with the Pivi Pro system.

Voice control & native navigation52
#10 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Built-in navigation and voice control are functional but dated next to rivals, and most owners default to phone-projected maps instead.

Audio system quality72
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

An 11-speaker, 380-watt Meridian sound system is standard on HSE, with a higher-output Meridian Signature system available on upper trims.

Digital instrument cluster74
#8 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A crisp 12.3-inch configurable Interactive Driver Display is available on the volume HSE trim, stepping up from a part-analog/TFT cluster on the base SE.

OTA update capability25
#9 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 Touch Pro Duo platform predates Land Rover's later Pivi Pro OTA push; updates are largely dealer-applied rather than whole-vehicle over-the-air.

Companion app & remote functions52
#10 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The InControl Remote app covers core remote functions (locate, lock/unlock status, vehicle health) but is more basic than rivals' digital-key-capable apps.

Charging ports & device power45
#9 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Standard USB-A ports in the front console and available rear ports cover basic device charging; wireless phone charging exists only as an optional accessory pad, not standard equipment, and USB-C was not yet fleetwide.

Keyless & remote access68
#10 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Keyless entry and push-button start are standard across the lineup with remote start available; no phone-as-key capability in this model year.

Camera & parking aids56
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A rearview camera with front/rear parking sensors is standard, but the 360-degree surround camera and parking assist are optional, not fitted to the base volume configuration.

Head-up display availability50
#9 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A head-up display is offered on the 2020 Range Rover Sport but bundled into higher trims/option packages rather than available on the volume configuration.

8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.67D
Kid & car-seat practicality58
#11 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Wide rear door openings and a flat-folding second/third row ease car-seat installs and stroller loading, though the optional third row is kids-only and awkward to reach.

Family safety package50
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

No NHTSA or IIHS crash-test rating exists for this model (Land Rover is not rated by either U.S. agency), and key active-safety items like adaptive cruise and high-speed automatic emergency braking are extra-cost Driver Assist Package options rather than standard on the volume trim.

Family road-trip comfort62
#11 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Comfortable, well-cushioned seats and a quiet cabin suit multi-hour trips for four, but rear-seat amenities (screens, vents) are modest versus three-row family rivals and cargo shrinks once the optional third row is in use.

Daily driving ease66
#11 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Air suspension and a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic make low-speed traffic driving relaxed, though the large footprint adds some effort in tight city streets.

Commuting cost efficiency34
#9 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

EPA-rated 19/25/21 mpg city/highway/combined for the volume P360 is below typical commuter norms, and premium fuel plus luxury maintenance keep per-mile running costs high.

Parking & maneuverability48
#10 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A roughly 40-foot turning circle and a wide body make tight urban parking more effortful than compact rivals, though standard rear camera and available surround-view help offset the footprint.

Work capability52
#5 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 7,716 lb max tow rating (non-PHEV, with tow package) and 1,850 lb payload are genuinely useful, but this is a luxury SUV, not a dedicated work vehicle, and payload/cargo access lag true work trucks.

Durability for work duty38
#9 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The Range Rover Sport carries a luxury-oriented reputation with historically mixed reliability data rather than a fleet-proven work-duty record; interior materials are not wear-focused.

Jobsite & upfit practicality28
#9 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

No onboard household power outlet, no dedicated tie-down/upfit ecosystem, and a carpeted cargo area unsuited to jobsite abuse.

Long-distance comfort & range68
#11 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Quiet cabin, comfortable seats and a roughly 400+ mile highway range on the P360's 21.7-gallon tank at 25 mpg highway make it a capable mile-eater, with driver-assist tech gated behind an options package.

Outdoor & adventure capability82
#1 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Standard Terrain Response (with Terrain Response 2 optional), height-adjustable air suspension, 9.3 in ground clearance and a 33.5 in wading depth give genuine off-pavement and adventure capability well beyond typical luxury SUVs.

Gear & luggage flexibility56
#10 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 62.2 cu ft max cargo volume with 60/40 folding rear seats handles typical gear loads well, though roof rails rated for only 220 lbs limit heavier rooftop cargo.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the Range Rover Sport's strongest categories.2.48C+
Handling & agility74
#4 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently note the Range Rover Sport disguises its size and weight well, with direct steering response and limited body roll for a tall luxury SUV.

Steering feel66
#7 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Steering is accurate and well-weighted with no lag, though like most modern electric power steering systems it trades outright road feedback for isolation.

Braking confidence68
#6 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Brakes are adequately strong for the vehicle's mass with a firm, confidence-inspiring pedal typical of the segment; no instrumented stopping-distance test was found for the 2020 P360.

Powertrain smoothness & response72
#6 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The P360 mild-hybrid turbocharged inline-6 pairs with a smooth 8-speed ZF automatic for well-calibrated, largely shudder-free acceleration.

Drivetrain noise & vibration70
#7 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The inline-6 is refined and quiet under normal driving, with a mild growl under hard acceleration but no persistent droning.

Turning circle
~40.1 ft curb-to-curb
24/100
#9 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Aggregated curb-to-curb turning circle data across 2020 Range Rover Sport variants converges around 12.2 m (~40 ft).

Driving position & ergonomics76
#6 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A commanding, elevated seating position, wide adjustment range, and logical control placement make for easy ingress/egress and good sightlines.

Fun-to-drive factor64
#5 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

More engaging than most luxury SUVs thanks to its agility and punchy inline-6, but it remains a comfort-oriented vehicle rather than a true enthusiast's choice at the P360 level.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Range Rover Sport's strongest categories.2.11C
Standard equipment generosity62
#10 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Base SE trim is well-equipped for a luxury SUV — standard leather, 14-way power front seats, 12.3-in digital cluster, dual 10-in touchscreens with standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and air suspension — but the panoramic roof and more advanced driver-assist tech are reserved for HSE and up, and several rivals bundle more driver-assist tech standard at this price.

Feature value per dollar52
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

At $68,650–$114,500, the Sport prices at or above mainstream German/Japanese mid-size luxury SUV rivals (BMW X5, Lexus RX, Audi Q7) for comparable content, trading some content-per-dollar for off-road capability and brand cachet rather than outright bargain value.

Trim & configuration breadth78
#6 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Nine distinct trim/powertrain combinations spanning SE through SVR, with gas turbo-I6 MHEV, diesel, PHEV, and supercharged V8 options across a $45,850 spread — a genuinely wide, well-spaced range from value-oriented to performance-flagship.

Sales popularity & market acceptance56
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The Sport is a steady, loyal-following seller in the mid-size luxury SUV class but not a volume leader against higher-selling rivals like the BMW X5, Lexus RX, or Mercedes GLE — a solid mid-pack position for a niche-premium nameplate.

Brand desirability & image72
#6 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Range Rover carries one of the strongest aspirational halos in the SUV market — genuine cross-cultural cachet and a loyal following — even though that image coexists with the brand's well-known reliability reputation, which is scored separately under ownership/reliability.

Deals & incentive availability55
#12 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Land Rover dealers typically offer modest lease/finance incentives on the Sport rather than deep discounting; 2020 demand was softened somewhat by the pandemic, which supports occasional negotiability without signaling desperation pricing.

Model freshness65
#8 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

2020 sits two years into the 2018 mid-cycle facelift of the second-generation (L494, 2014–2022) Sport — current touch-duo infotainment and updated styling, but the platform itself dates to 2013 and the third-generation (L461) redesign was already on the horizon for 2022.

Critical reception & awards58
#8 of 12 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently praise the Sport's on-road refinement, off-road breadth, and interior ambiance, but it is rarely the outright comparison-test winner against German rivals once reliability and running costs are weighed in, and it collected no major 2020 industry awards (no 10Best/NACTOY wins for this nameplate).
