The verdict
A struggling luxury off-road suv, strong on performance and held back by ownership.
The 2020 G 550 is a hand-built, 416-hp V8 icon that can climb almost anything and still holds about 70% of its value after six years. You pay heavily for that: about $132k to start, 14 MPG on premium fuel (roughly $5,750 a year), no independent crash-test results, and dated touchpad-driven infotainment. Buy it for capability, image and resale. Look elsewhere if you want value, efficiency or the latest tech.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe G-Class's best-graded category.3.17B
2020 is the second model year of the W463 generation that launched for 2019, and it carries the powertrain over unchanged. The volume G550 uses the 4.0L biturbo V8 rated at 416 hp; the AMG G63 tops the range at 577 hp.
The twin-turbo V8 delivers 450 lb-ft from about 2,000 rpm, well above body-on-frame rivals such as the 4Runner, Wrangler and GX.
Mercedes quotes 5.6 s to 60 mph for the G550, quick for a ladder-frame SUV weighing about 5,550 lb. Some third-party catalogs list 5.1 s, but the manufacturer figure is used.
The hot-vee M176 biturbo V8 is smooth and muscular, with little lag and a characterful exhaust note. It is more refined than the Wrangler, Bronco and 4Runner powertrains and on par with the Defender's.
The 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic shifts smoothly and decisively in normal driving. Reviewers' main complaint is occasionally slow kickdown.
The US-market 2020 G550 is rated to tow 7,000 lb when properly equipped. Auto123 lists 5,000 lb with a dead-weight hitch and 7,716 lb (3,500 kg) with a weight-distributing hitch.
Every 2020 G-Class has permanent 4MATIC, a two-speed low-range transfer case and three locking differentials as standard.
A body-on-frame ladder chassis, three lockers, low range, about 9.5 in of ground clearance and about 27.6 in of fording depth make it one of the most capable luxury off-roaders. It lacks the transparent-hood camera added later in the generation.
The 2020 US lineup is two tunes of the same 4.0L twin-turbo V8 (G550 and AMG G63). There is no six-cylinder, hybrid or EV option; the electric G580 and the mild-hybrid I6 arrived only with the 2025 update.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the G-Class's weakest categories.0.00F
The EPA rates the 2020 G550 at 14 MPG combined, below the floor of the gas SUV band. This is the same rating as the 2019 launch year; the 2021 record rose to 18 MPG.
A non-hybrid twin-turbo V8 in a roughly 5,550 lb boxy body returns very poor city economy.
The upright, brick-shaped body limits highway economy to 17 MPG, below the floor of the SUV highway band.
The 100 L (26.4 gal) tank gives about 370 miles at the EPA combined figure. EPA publishes no range for gas vehicles, so this figure is derived.
EPA's estimated annual fuel cost for the 2020 G550 is $5,750 on premium gasoline, well above the top of the SUV band.
Every 2020 G-Class requires premium unleaded; there is no regular-fuel option.
3SafetyGrades below the middle of the scale.1.50D
NHTSA has never crash-tested the G-Class, including the 2019+ W463A generation that the 2020 model year belongs to. Under framework rules an unrated vehicle records 0.
IIHS has never tested the G-Class, so there is no TSP/TSP+ award and no independent crashworthiness data. The second-year W463A ladder-frame body with modern restraints (front knee airbags) and Pre-Safe keeps it mid-band, behind IIHS-rated rivals such as the Lexus GX and Toyota 4Runner.
2020 G 550 listings show Active Brake Assist with autonomous emergency braking, Blind Spot Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Attention Assist and Parktronic. Active Distance Assist Distronic and active lane keeping appear on many cars, but Mercedes bundled them in the optional Driver Assistance Package for this generation, so they are not confirmed standard. True lane centering (Active Steering Assist) also requires that package.
Active Brake Assist is Mercedes' mature system, which tests well on IIHS-rated models like the GLE and GLC. The G-Class itself has no IIHS front-crash-prevention result.
Blind Spot Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are listed on 2020 G 550s but only warn. Active Blind Spot Assist with braking intervention and exit warning requires the optional Driver Assistance Package.
Active Lane Keeping Assist is listed on 2020 G 550s, but true lane centering (Active Steering Assist) comes only with the optional package. The tall, flat-sided body is also prone to crosswind wander, which makes interventions busier than in Mercedes' unibody SUVs.
Active Distance Assist Distronic, a refined full-speed-range stop-and-go system, appears on 2020 G 550 listings, but it sits in the optional Driver Assistance Package rather than being confirmed standard. Without Active Steering Assist it does not combine into a full highway assist.
The 2020 G-Class offers no hands-free highway driving. In the US, Mercedes' Drive Pilot launched later (MY2024) and only on the S-Class and EQS sedan.
LED headlights with Adaptive Highbeam Assist are standard on the 2020 G 550, with Multibeam LED available. IIHS has never rated the G-Class headlights, so this score reflects the equipment, not a test result.
The upright, nearly vertical glass and thin pillars give famously clear forward and side sightlines. The outside-mounted spare partly blocks the rear view, so the rear camera and Parktronic sensors carry rear visibility.
Both rear outboard seats have LATCH anchors, and the rear doors open nearly square. The bench is narrow for three across, though, and the high step-in makes lifting a child seat in awkward.
4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.45D
The 2020 G 550 is the second model year of the W463A generation that began in 2019 (a carry-over year), and it seats five in two rows.
The tall, upright greenhouse gives generous front headroom. KBB lists plenty of headroom as a pro.
The upright seating position and boxy footwell leave front legroom short by SUV standards.
The flat roof runs all the way back, so rear passengers get generous headroom.
The 2019 redesign added nearly six inches of rear legroom, so adults have real knee room in the back seat.
No 2020 G-Class has a third row; every one is a two-row five-seater.
The load bay is tall and square, but the volume behind the second row is only average for a large SUV.
Folding the 60/40 rear seat gives about 69 cu ft, and the seat does not fold fully flat. CarGurus lists limited cargo space as a con.
Cubby storage is ordinary: a smallish console bin, door pockets and cupholders. The side-hinged rear door with an external spare is awkward, and the 2020 G 550 has no underfloor storage, onboard AC power or wireless charging.
The front seats are upscale and supportive, and active multicontour seats with massage come in the $12,200 Exclusive Interior Package. The rear bench is upright, and the small rear doors and high step-in make getting in awkward.
Independent front suspension (since 2019) files off the old truck's worst edges, but the G 550 still rides firmly. The live rear axle and tall body bring head toss on broken pavement.
Road and engine noise are well isolated for a body-on-frame SUV. The flat windshield and big side glass make wind noise at highway speed the main complaint.
Heated front and rear seats and automatic climate control are standard. Ventilated and massage front seats and a heated wheel cost extra through packages, a rich list at this price.
5Cost of OwnershipThe G-Class's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The G 550 is the entry trim for 2020, the second model year of the W463A generation. With destination it starts at about $131.9k, far above the top of the SUV band.
The G 550 is the volume trim. Typical dealer-stock examples carry about $10k–20k of option packages, so a representative car stickers around $144k. Heavily optioned cars with Manufaktur paint reach about $157k.
CarEdge projects about $5.6k in maintenance and repairs over five years for the W463A G 550. That is mid-band for SUVs: costly German parts and the twin-turbo M176 V8 are offset by 10k-mile service intervals.
A 2020 G 550 is now more than six years old, so its depreciation can be observed rather than forecast. KBB puts resale at about $93k, roughly 70% of base sticker. Allowing for option content that depreciates faster but a year less of aging at the 5-year mark, a typically equipped car retains about 68%, among the strongest of any luxury SUV.
The Mercedes-Benz USA New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years / 50,000 miles, typical for German luxury brands.
Mercedes offers no separate, longer powertrain term. The V8 is covered only within the 4-year/50k-mile basic warranty, which is below the 5-year band floor.
Mercedes-Benz USA includes no complimentary scheduled maintenance on the 2020 G-Class; prepaid maintenance plans cost extra. Buyers get Roadside Assistance for the warranty term and a Mercedes me connect trial, which is thin for a ~$144k SUV next to BMW's 3-yr/36k Ultimate Care.
$144,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (68% retained, or about $97,920) leaves about $46,080 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,640 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $51,720 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.78C-
2020 is the second model year of the W463A generation (2019–2024) and carries over the 2019 G550. It is early in the generation and shares most of the 2019 launch-year recall cluster, including a differential-lock module fault that could disable ABS/ESP. Consumer Reports has too little data on the low-volume G-Class to publish a predicted rating, and RepairPal rates it Average, toward the bottom of its luxury class.
In J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Studies, Mercedes-Benz has consistently placed below the industry average. In Consumer Reports' luxury brand rankings it sits in the lower half.
Eight NHTSA campaigns cover the 2020 G-Class, and two of them can disable ABS/ESP while driving: a failing resistor in the differential-locking module, and a front-axle wiring harness that chafes on the oil cooler. The others cover two rear door latch campaigns, a mislabeled child-lock symbol, loose side-impact airbag sensor connectors, and two eCall software faults. No powertrain-durability recall, but heavy, repeated safety-system activity for one model year.
The 2020 G550 uses the M176 4.0L hot-vee biturbo V8 with the widely used 9G-TRONIC automatic. The engine comes from the M176/M177 family, which Mercedes and AMG have used across many models since 2015. Neither engine nor transmission shows a systemic failure pattern. Costly turbo, oil-leak and cooling repairs and a less proven high-mileage record keep it short of the Toyota rivals.
The cabin uses Nappa leather, real wood or carbon trim and solid metal switchgear, with deep designo/MANUFAKTUR personalization on top. That puts it among the richest interiors in the off-road segment.
Magna Steyr builds the G-Class largely by hand in Graz, and reviewers consistently note tight panel gaps and a solid door 'clunk'. The score is held down by assembly-related campaigns on this early-generation build: a chafing wiring harness, loose airbag sensor connectors, rear door latch faults and a mislabeled child lock.
Mercedes-Benz has one of the largest luxury dealer networks in the US, roughly 380 locations, and every one services the G-Class. Among luxury brands its service satisfaction ranks mid-to-upper tier.
The G-Class is low-volume, hand-built European hardware. Body panels, electronic modules and twin-turbo V8 parts are dealer-only and premium-priced. The aftermarket covers wheels and accessories, not core components.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the G-Class's weakest categories.1.35D
The 2020 G 550 uses a 12.3-in COMAND center display that is not touch-sensitive; it is controlled by a console touchpad and rotary controller. A touchscreen arrived only with the 2025 update.
The widescreen display looks sharp, but menus are driven by touchpad, rotary knob and steering-wheel touch controls, which feel dated and fiddly next to MBUX rivals.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard but wired only on the COMAND system; wireless projection arrived with the 2025 MBUX update.
COMAND Online navigation and voice control are standard and functional, but they predate the natural-language MBUX assistant, so most owners use phone projection.
Burmester surround sound is standard on the G 550, far richer than the stereos in off-road rivals.
The 12.3-in digital driver display sharing a glass pane with the center screen was optional on the 2020 G 550 and widely fitted. It became standard only for 2021; base cars use analog dials with a small center display.
The COMAND head unit gets little over-the-air updating beyond map data, so feature updates generally need a dealer visit.
The Mercedes me app covers lock/unlock, locate and vehicle status, and remote start runs through it but needs a subscription. There is no digital key.
There are a few front USB ports and a 12-V socket but no AC outlet and no wireless charging on the 2020 G 550.
Push-button start is standard and KEYLESS-GO proximity entry is optional; one owner reports a car without it. Remote start needs a subscription, and the manual side-hinged rear door rules out a hands-free tailgate.
Parktronic with Active Parking Assist and a rearview camera are standard, and a 360-degree camera is widely fitted. The transparent-hood view arrived only in 2025.
No head-up display is offered; the near-vertical windshield rules one out.
8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.56D
The rear seat is roomy, with 40.5 in of headroom. The small rear doors, high step-in, side-hinged tailgate and modest cargo space make daily kid logistics harder than in unibody luxury SUVs.
AEB with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning and lane-keeping are standard, while lane centering needs the Driver Assistance Package. Neither NHTSA nor IIHS has crash-tested the G-Class, so nothing independent verifies it.
Generous rear room, heated rear seats and Burmester audio suit four adults. Wind noise, a firm ride, 38 cu ft of luggage space with the seats up, and a 14-MPG V8 limit long trips.
The torquey V8 makes low-speed driving effortless, and the steering is light for parking. The tall step-in, heavy doors and firm ride add work to daily errands.
14 MPG combined (13 city) on premium fuel, about $5,750 a year, plus costly tires and service make it one of the most expensive vehicles to commute in.
The square corners and upright glass make the footprint easy to judge, and Parktronic, Active Parking Assist and cameras help. The wide 44.6-ft turning circle and tail-mounted spare make tight spaces hard.
The ladder frame, 450 lb-ft V8 and 7,000-lb tow rating can haul real loads. A luxury cabin and small cargo hold make it a poor practical work vehicle.
The military-derived ladder chassis and locking differentials are famously tough, and the V8 is proven. The leather cabin and very high repair costs make it a poor fit for hard work.
A hitch and roof accessories are available. There is no onboard AC power, no washable surfaces and no fleet upfit ecosystem.
The seats are comfortable and DISTRONIC adaptive cruise is fitted, but 14 MPG from the 26.4-gal tank gives only about 370 miles of range. Wind rush and a firm ride also hold it back.
Three locking differentials, low-range gearing, about 9.5 in of ground clearance and about 27.6 in of wading depth make the G 550 one of the most capable off-roaders sold.
The tall, square cargo bay and 60/40 folding seat take boxy gear well, and a hitch is available. The side-hinged door, raised load floor and 68.6-cu-ft maximum limit bulky loads.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the G-Class's strongest categories.2.08C
The independent front suspension keeps it stable and body motion contained. The tall center of gravity and roughly 5,600-lb mass still bring more lean than unibody rivals, plus early understeer.
The electromechanical rack-and-pinion fitted since 2019 is light for parking and firms up on the highway without the old vagueness, though it stays largely numb.
Large brakes give confident, progressive stops, though the mass shows as nose-dive under hard braking.
The hot-vee biturbo V8 delivers muscular, nearly lag-free torque, and the 9G-TRONIC shifts smoothly. Kickdown is occasionally slow.
The V8 is hushed at a cruise and burbles richly under load, with no harshness.
The wide turning circle makes U-turns and tight parking cumbersome.
The commanding upright seat and clear view over the square hood stand out, and the locker buttons sit front and center. Short front legroom, a high step-in and touchpad-driven infotainment count against it.
It is not sporty on twisty roads, but its character makes every drive an event: the clanking door latches, the commanding view, the V8's punch and burble, and unmatched trail ability.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the G-Class's strongest categories.2.09C
The 2020 G 550 comes standard with a 416-hp twin-turbo V8, three locking differentials, adaptive damping, dual 12.3-in. screens, leather, heated front seats and core driver assists. Burmester audio, AMG Line, Exclusive interiors and many comfort items are costly options.
Content and capability per dollar is the weakest in the peer group. The Land Rover Defender 110 (new for MY2020) and Lexus GX 460 offer serious off-road hardware for well under half the G 550's ~$132k entry price, so much of what a G-Class buyer pays for is image and build.
The 2020 US lineup is just two variants, the G 550 and AMG G 63, both with a V8 and 4MATIC and about $25k apart. It is a take-it-or-leave-it range with no lower entry point, softened only by extensive designo/Manufaktur personalization.
Volume is small in absolute terms but exceptional for the price. US sales held up at about 7,700 in pandemic-hit 2020, when Mercedes-Benz USA's total volume fell 8.9%, and demand outstripped supply with long waitlists.
The G-Wagen is one of the most aspirational SUVs on sale. Its iconic boxy shape, celebrity halo and cult following show up directly in resale: a 2020 G 550 still holds about 70% of its base MSRP after six years.
Demand for the redesigned W463A far exceeded allocation in 2020, so dealers commonly added markups and waitlists ran months long. Factory cash and subsidized financing on the G-Class were essentially absent, even as pandemic-era incentives appeared elsewhere in the lineup.
2020 is only the second model year of the W463A generation launched for 2019, so the body, chassis and safety tech are new. The COMAND infotainment, which predates MBUX, already lagged newer Mercedes products.
Reviewers praise the V8's character, build quality, off-road hardware and the 2019 redesign's much-improved ride. They criticize price, thirst and trucky on-road handling, and it is rarely a comparison winner on value or refinement against the Range Rover or the new Defender.
