The verdict

An honor-roll full-size luxury sedan, strong on safety and held back by ownership.

The 2025 S-Class is still the benchmark for how a luxury sedan should ride, sound and feel. It has a plush air-suspension ride, massaging seats, limousine-grade rear legroom (43.8 in) and a long list of driver-assist tech that is standard rather than optional. The catch is the money. It starts at $118,900, a typical S 580 costs about $136,000, it keeps only about 38% of its value after five years, and repairs get expensive once the 4-year/50,000-mile warranty runs out. Buy it for the experience, not as an investment. Note that 2025 is the last year before the mid-cycle facelift.

Jump to scores

Strengths

  • One of the smoothest, quietest rides you can buy
  • A back seat built for being driven
  • Driver-assist tech is standard, not a pricey add-on

What holds it back

  • Six-figure price before you touch the options
  • Brutal depreciation and short coverage
  • Expensive to keep running, with average-at-best reliability

2025 offers four distinct powertrains: the mild-hybrid I6 S 500, the twin-turbo V8 S 580, the I6 plug-in hybrid S 580e, and the AMG V8 plug-in hybrid S 63 E Performance. Two of the four are electrified. There is no BEV S-Class; the EQS fills that role.

Combined fuel economy
24 MPG combined (S 500 4MATIC); 21 MPG S 580 V8

#6 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The EPA rates the volume 2025 S 500 4MATIC (3.0L turbo I6 with a 48V mild hybrid) at 24 MPG combined, which is good for a full-size luxury sedan. The V8 S 580 drops to 21 MPG.

City fuel economy
21 MPG city (S 500 4MATIC); 18 MPG S 580
23/100
#6 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The EPA city rating is 21 MPG for the S 500 4MATIC. Mild-hybrid assist helps, but the heavy AWD platform limits stop-and-go efficiency.

Highway fuel economy
31 MPG highway (S 500 4MATIC); 27 MPG S 580
33/100
#5 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The EPA highway rating is 31 MPG, which is respectable for a roughly 4,900-lb flagship sedan.

Driving range

#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 20.0-gallon tank at the EPA's 24 MPG combined gives roughly 480 miles per tank on the S 500 4MATIC.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$3,350/yr (S 500 4MATIC, premium, EPA 15k mi/yr)
0/100
#6 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

fueleconomy.gov estimates $3,350 a year on premium gasoline at 15,000 miles per year. That is above the top of the sedan band, mainly because of the premium-fuel requirement.

Fuel requirements35
#6 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every gas 2025 S-Class trim requires premium unleaded, and no regular-fuel, flex-fuel or diesel option exists. The S 580e PHEV also uses premium and needs home Level 2 charging to deliver its savings.

3SafetyThe S-Class's best-graded category.3.94A+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars (inferred — NHTSA has not tested the W223 generation)
100/100
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA has not crash-tested the W223 S-Class (2021+), and 2025 is a carry-over year within that generation. Inferred at 5 stars on the strength of the flagship's structure and extensive standard restraint tech (PRE-SAFE Impulse Side, front center airbag, available rear-seat frontal airbags) and the predecessor W222's 5-star record — the same treatment the 2026 card and segment peers (A8, 7 Series) receive.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness70
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS has not run a full crashworthiness battery on the W223 S-Class and it does not appear on the 2025 Top Safety Pick/TSP+ lists — typical for low-volume large luxury flagships. Recently tested Mercedes sedans have earned Good crashworthiness results, but without a completed award-eligible slate it cannot score in the award band.

Standard ADAS suite breadth92
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Unlike the C- and E-Class, where core Level 2 features sit in the optional Driver Assistance Package, the 2025 S-Class includes the package as standard on every US trim (S 500 4MATIC, S 580 4MATIC, S 580e): Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Steering Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function, Active Emergency Stop Assist and PRE-SAFE PLUS, plus a surround-view camera. No meaningful safety feature is trim-gated.

Automatic emergency braking performance85
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic and turning functions covers vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, including intersection scenarios and night operation, using the S-Class's stereo camera and multi-radar array. IIHS has not tested the W223, so this score leans on the consistently strong front-crash-prevention results of other Mercedes models with the same sensor suite.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage90
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Active Blind Spot Assist with braking intervention, rear cross-traffic alert with braking, and exit warning are all standard, so no package is needed. Coverage is comprehensive, matching or beating the BMW 7 Series.

Lane keeping & centering90
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Active Steering Assist uses map data to anticipate curves and is widely praised for smooth centering without ping-ponging. It is paired with Active Lane Change Assist, which completes signaled lane changes on its own.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist92
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard DISTRONIC adaptive cruise works across the full speed range, including stop-and-go, and adjusts speed for posted limits, curves and roundabouts using route data. Paired with Active Steering Assist, it gives one of the most refined highway-assist experiences in the luxury class.

Hands-free driving availability82
#4 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2025 S-Class offers DRIVE PILOT, a certified SAE Level 3 conditional-automation system that lets drivers take their eyes off the road in congested highway traffic. Its operating area is narrow — approved highways in California and Nevada, at roughly 40 mph or less behind a lead vehicle — so coverage trails Super Cruise and BMW's Highway Assistant, but its eyes-off capability keeps it in the top band.

Headlight performance95
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Multibeam LED headlights with adaptive high beam are standard. The optional DIGITAL LIGHT system has about 1.3 million micromirrors per lamp, shaping a glare-free high beam and projecting guidance symbols onto the road. IIHS has not rated the W223's headlights, but the hardware leads the class.

Outward visibility80
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The long hood, high beltline and thick rear pillars limit natural sightlines, as on most flagship sedans. Standard surround-view cameras, front and rear parking sensors with Parking Assist, and available rear-axle steering compensate well in tight spaces.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability78
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Large rear doors and long-wheelbase legroom make rear-facing seats easy to install, with outboard lower LATCH anchors and top tethers. The anchors sit behind covers and take a little digging, and the optional executive rear seats make a three-across install harder.

The car has a covered console, wireless charging and decent door bins, plus available rear console and folding-table options, but no standout storage tricks.

Seat comfort94
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard active multicontour front seats with massage are widely praised, and the reclining executive rear seats are class benchmarks. Comfort headrests became standard for 2025.

Ride quality95
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard AIRMATIC with adaptive damping gives a plush, controlled ride that leads the segment.

Cabin quietness92

Acoustic glazing and heavy insulation make it one of the quietest cars sold.

Climate & comfort features86
#6 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Heated and ventilated massaging front seats are standard. For 2025, though, the heated steering wheel moved into a $3,700 Warmth & Comfort package and quad-zone climate became optional, a small step back.

For 2025 the US S-Class opens with the S 500 4MATIC (AWD only, mild-hybrid inline-six) at $117,750 plus $1,150 destination. That is far above the $55K sedan band ceiling, so it scores at the floor.

Volume-Trim Price

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$9,600 over 5 years
0/100
#8 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Flagship German sedans sit at the top of the sedan maintenance range. Dealer Service A/B visits, AIRMATIC air suspension, rear-axle steering and a dense electronics suite make years 4–5, after the 4-yr warranty, expensive.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~38% of MSRP retained after 5 years
10/100
#4 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The S-Class is among the steepest-depreciating vehicles in the US, typically losing 60–65% over five years. This tracks the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8 and reflects heavy leasing plus weak demand for used six-figure sedans.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Mercedes-Benz New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years / 50,000 miles. That matches BMW and Audi and trails Genesis (5 yr / 60k).

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate powertrain term; S 580e HV battery 10 yr / 100,000 mi)
0/100
#7 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes offers no separate longer powertrain warranty: powertrain coverage ends with the basic 4 yr / 50k term, below the 5-yr sedan band floor. Only the PHEV's high-voltage battery gets 10 yr / 100k.

Complimentary maintenance & perks55
#8 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

There is no multi-year complimentary scheduled maintenance. Owners get unlimited-mileage roadside assistance for the warranty term, a Mercedes me connect services trial and participating-dealer concierge perks. That falls short of the included-maintenance programs from Genesis (G90) and Lexus.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$93,920 (≈$84,320 depreciation + $9,600 maintenance)
0/100
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$136,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (38% retained, or about $51,680) leaves about $84,320 in depreciation. Add the projected $9,600 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $93,920 in total.

6Reliability & QualityGrades above the middle of the scale.2.75B-
Predicted reliability68
#4 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Consumer Reports forecasts 'about average' reliability for the 2025 S-Class, but the forecast leans on data from similar Mercedes-Benz models rather than deep S-Class survey samples. Earlier W223 years drew owner complaints about MBUX/Hyperscreen software, 48V mild-hybrid electrics and body electronics. That trails the Lexus LS (84.8) and BMW 7 Series (80.2), which have stronger records, so this sits just below the peer median.

Brand reliability track record58
#6 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

In the 2025 J.D. Power VDS, Mercedes-Benz scored about 243 PP100 against an industry average of 202. That put it in the bottom third, alongside Ram and Acura and far behind Lexus (140). Consumer Reports brand rankings similarly keep Mercedes in the lower half. It is not at the very bottom like VW or Chrysler, but it is consistently below average.

Recall & TSB history64
#4 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The W223 generation (2021–) has a heavy NHTSA campaign history, about 25 recalls. They include fuel-pump shutdowns, 80-amp fuse boxes, Camtronic ECU overheat/stall on the V8, eCall failures and front brake hoses. The 2025 model year itself is cleaner. Only one campaign hits the gas volume trims, though it is a serious one: 26V638, front brake hoses that may rupture, expanded to cover 2022–2025 S 500/S 580. The other two 2025 recalls are limited to the S 580e (AVAS software, 94 units) and the AMG S 63 E (hybrid starter software).

Powertrain durability reputation80
#3 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The S 500 4MATIC's M256 3.0L turbo inline-six with 48V EQ Boost has been in production since 2018 across GLE/E/S-Class with no widespread failure pattern. The S 580's M177 4.0L twin-turbo V8 is mature but carried the 24V704 Camtronic/ECU overheat-stall campaign on 2021–2023 cars. The 9G-Tronic is proven. Fuel-pump recalls on earlier years and the 48V ISG's added complexity hold this short of the top band.

Interior material quality95
#1 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

This is the benchmark full-size luxury cabin, with Nappa leather, open-pore wood, metal trim, 250+ LED active ambient lighting, a 12.8-inch OLED center screen and Burmester 3D/4D audio. Reviewers place it at or near the top of the class with the 7 Series and A8; only ultra-luxury cars like the Celestiq and Maybach sit clearly above.

Fit & finish86
#3 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Sindelfingen Factory 56 assembly gives tight panel gaps, a solid door-close and premium switchgear feel. The quality complaints on the W223 skew toward software and electronics rather than physical assembly. One exception holds it a bit below the best: earlier physical-quality campaigns, such as a headliner/roof-area issue and the fuse-box rework errors (25V255), show assembly and repair-quality slips.

Dealer & service network80
#4 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz has roughly 380 US dealers, one of the densest luxury networks, ahead of BMW and Audi and covering all major metros. Flagship S-Class owners get loaner and concierge treatment at most stores. Service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands, behind Lexus and Genesis.

Parts availability & repair cost42
#5 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Out of warranty, the S-Class is one of the costliest sedans to repair. AIRMATIC air suspension, rear-axle steering, 48V ISG electronics, OLED/Hyperscreen displays and the many ECUs are largely dealer-only parts at flagship pricing, and there is little aftermarket support for the W223. It is more expensive to keep than the LS or G90.

However, the heated steering wheel moved from standard to optional for 2025, and rear-seat luxury, Driver Assistance and rear-axle steering upgrades are costly packages. That is competitive with the 7 Series and A8 but well short of the Genesis G90's loaded base car.

Critical reception & awards90
#2 of 9 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Car and Driver, MotorTrend and Edmunds widely treat the W223 as the luxury-sedan benchmark for ride, refinement and cabin tech, and it routinely tops full-size luxury comparisons. The Genesis G90 and Lexus LS occasionally win value-weighted verdicts.
