The verdict
A struggling subcompact hatchback, strong on driving and held back by space.
The 2024 Cooper Hardtop is the last year of a ten-year-old design, and it is still one of the most fun small cars you can buy. Handling feels go-kart sharp, the Cooper S reaches 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, and a 6-speed manual is still on offer. Reliability has also turned solid, with J.D. Power rating it 82/100. The trade-offs are big ones. The rear seat has 30.8 inches of legroom and the trunk holds 8.7 cu ft, every gas trim needs premium fuel, and the car lacks blind-spot monitoring or lane keeping at any price. Buy it as a characterful car for one or two people, not as a practical or especially safe hatchback.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Go-kart handling and genuine fun
- Made for city streets and tight parking
- Better reliability than its reputation
What holds it back
- Cramped rear seat and a tiny trunk
- Missing modern driver assists
- Middling crash-test record

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.85F
MY2024 US Hardtop 2 Door is the final year of the F56 third generation (the new F66/J01 Cooper arrives as MY2025 in the US); the volume Cooper S's 2.0L TwinPower Turbo four makes 189 hp. Brisk for a subcompact but low against the hatchback band, which runs to 520 hp.
The Cooper S produces 206 lb-ft from just 1,350 rpm, which gives it a strong low-speed shove despite the modest headline figure against the band.
The manufacturer quotes 6.4 seconds for the Cooper S. That is quick for a subcompact, though well behind hot hatches like the GR Corolla and Civic Type R.
The B48 2.0L turbo four is smooth and eager, with its torque arriving low and only mild lag off idle. The base 1.5L three-cylinder is thrummier under load, and the Cooper SE is seamless but short-legged.
The 7-speed Steptronic dual-clutch shifts quickly and decisively at speed but can be hesitant and abrupt at crawling speeds. A 6-speed manual was still offered for 2024 on Cooper, Cooper S and JCW, a plus for enthusiasts.
The Hardtop is front-wheel drive only on every trim, and ALL4 all-wheel drive is reserved for the Countryman and Clubman. That puts it in the low band.
Broad for a subcompact: a 1.5L turbo three, a 2.0L turbo four in two tunes (Cooper S and JCW), manual or automatic gearboxes, and the battery-electric Cooper SE. No hybrid or PHEV is offered.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Cooper Hardtop's weakest categories.0.62F
The EPA rates the volume Cooper S with the 7-speed dual-clutch at 31 MPG combined. That is solid for a gas hatchback with this much performance, but short of economy-focused rivals.
The EPA city figure for the Cooper S automatic is 28 MPG.
The EPA highway rating of 38 MPG is a strong result for the Cooper S automatic.
A small 11.6-gallon tank limits range to about 360 miles on the combined rating, despite decent economy.
The EPA estimates $2,550 a year at 15,000 miles. The premium-fuel requirement pushes the cost above regular-fuel rivals with similar MPG.
Every gas Hardtop trim, including the base 1.5L Cooper, is rated on premium fuel, which adds cost at every fill-up with no regular-fuel trim available.
3SafetyGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.77F
MY2024 is the final US year of the F56 third-generation Hardtop (the refreshed F66/J01 Cooper arrives as MY2025 in the US). NHTSA rated the 2024 Hardtop 2 Door 4 stars overall, with a 3-star rear-seat side-barrier result dragging the side score.
What IIHS has tested is Good — driver-side small overlap and the original moderate overlap — but the passenger-side small overlap, updated moderate overlap (rear occupant) and updated side tests were never run on the aging F56, so it holds no 2024 award. Scored at the bottom of the 'mostly Good, no award' band given the incomplete picture.
Standard kit on the 2024 Cooper S is thin: forward collision warning with city-speed braking and pedestrian warning, lane departure warning, rear-view camera and rear park sensors. Adaptive cruise is a package option, and blind-spot monitoring and lane keeping are not offered on the F56 at all — they only arrive with the 2025 redesign.
The camera-based Active Driving Assistant brakes only at city speeds and is not rated by IIHS for vehicle-to-vehicle or pedestrian (day/night) front crash prevention, so there is no evidence of Advanced/Superior performance.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are not available on the F56 Hardtop at any trim — a notable omission by 2024 that the redesigned 2025 Cooper corrected.
Only a steering-wheel-vibration lane departure warning is fitted; there is no active lane keep assist or lane centering on the 2024 Hardtop.
Active Cruise Control (with Stop & Go on Steptronic cars) is available via the Driving Assistance Package, but it is an option rather than standard and, with no lane centering, there is no combined highway assist.
No hands-free driving system is offered on the 2024 Cooper Hardtop at any trim.
LED projector headlights are rated Acceptable by IIHS on all trims; curve-adaptive lighting and high-beam assist are available, but no Good-rated lamp is offered.
Upright windshield, low beltline and a tiny footprint give good forward sightlines and easy placement, but the thick C-pillars and small rear window of the two-door body create blind zones that are not compensated by blind-spot monitoring or a surround-view camera.
IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Marginal; there are only two rear positions, reached by folding the front seats of a two-door, and rear-facing seats force the front occupant well forward.
4Space & ComfortThe Cooper Hardtop's lowest-graded category.0.34F
The F56 Hardtop 2 Door is a strict four-seater with two rear buckets; no fifth belt on any trim.
The tall F56 greenhouse gives generous front headroom for a subcompact; the optional panoramic moonroof trims it somewhat.
Front legroom is adequate for tall drivers and in line with the compact class.
Rear headroom is respectable; the rear bench's problem is legroom and access, not height.
Rear legroom is tight, below even the hatchback band floor; adults fit only for short trips.
The cargo area behind the rear seats is among the smallest in the hatchback class, though folding the seats opens 34 cu ft.
Small door pockets and a narrow console, but a two-level cargo floor and 50/50 split rear seatbacks help; the tiny footprint limits cubby space.
Front seats are praised as comfortable and supportive, with sport seats on Signature; the upright, short-cushion rear seats are uncomfortable for adults.
The short wheelbase and firm, handling-biased tuning make the ride busy over broken pavement, worse on run-flat tires and larger wheels.
Road and tire noise are prominent at highway speed, as is typical for a short, firmly-sprung subcompact; the Cooper S engine is audible under load.
Heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate come with the Signature tier; no ventilated seats or rear vents, and the base Classic is sparsely equipped.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.07C
The 2024 US Hardtop is the final model year of the F56 third generation (the F66 reached the US as a 2025 model), and the entry Cooper 2 Door starts at $25,800 plus $995 destination. That's cheap for a premium-badged small car.
The Cooper S is the most popular Hardtop. It starts at $30,095 delivered, and the Signature trim upgrade or a package or two, which buyers usually add, puts the typical build in the low $30Ks.
MINI covers 3 years/36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance for free, but the BMW-derived turbo engines are expensive to maintain and repair once that runs out. Edmunds' two Hardtop bodies share mechanicals yet bracket a wide range, so the midpoint is used; either way it is well above the Civic/Mazda3/Corolla hatch peers at $4,000–4,700.
The sources disagree widely. Edmunds' 4-door projection implies about 42% retained, while CarEdge's model-level curve (69%) and Edmunds' 2-door figure look inflated by post-pandemic used pricing. MINI has historically depreciated faster than mainstream hatchbacks, so a figure below Civic/Mazda3 (58–61%) is used; being the last manual-transmission generation may help the resale of manual cars somewhat.
This is the BMW Group standard 4-year/50,000-mile New Passenger Car Limited Warranty. It runs a year longer than most mainstream brands and is shorter than Hyundai/Kia's.
MINI does not extend powertrain coverage past the bumper-to-bumper term, so the engine and transmission are out of warranty at 4 years/50,000 miles. That is a real weakness given MINI's repair costs.
MINI includes 3 years/36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance, which covers the oil services where dealer rates hurt most, plus 4 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance. It is a useful package but falls short of the multi-year-plus top band.
$32,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (50% retained, or about $16,250) leaves about $16,250 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $23,250 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Cooper Hardtop's strongest categories.2.84B-
In the US the 2024 model year is the final, fully matured year of the F56 third-generation Hardtop (the F66/J01 generation arrived as a 2025 model), and J.D. Power rates it 82/100 for quality & reliability, in its 'Great' band. Consumer Reports' outlook for the late F56 cars is roughly average to above average, so the two sources agree on good but not class-leading, below the Corolla/Civic hatchbacks.
MINI has turned its dependability record around under BMW-era hardware: it tied for 3rd in J.D. Power's 2024 VDS and ranked 10th in 2025, still better than the industry average. Consumer Reports brand rankings put it closer to mid-pack, so it lands at the top of the mid-pack band rather than consistently top-5.
The NHTSA record for the gas 2024 Hardtop is clean: the only campaigns touching 2024 are two high-voltage-battery recalls confined to the electric Cooper SE, which is not the scored powertrain. Late-F56 gas cars carried just a handful of small, low-volume campaigns (seat belt, airbag module, trim crash pad) with nothing systemic.
The volume Cooper S uses the B48 2.0L turbo four (Cooper: B38 1.5L three) — BMW modular engines in service since 2014 with a solid high-mileage record, paired with the 7-speed dual-clutch the F56 has used since 2019. The known weak points are oil-filter-housing and valve-cover gasket leaks, coolant-system plastics and direct-injection carbon buildup: a mature family with maintenance items, not a problem powertrain.
The 2024 car keeps the F56 cabin rather than the new knit-dash F66 interior: chunky toggle switches, leatherette or leather options and solid switchgear that reviewers credit as upscale for a subcompact. Hard plastics on the lower dash and doors and an aging infotainment surround keep it competitive rather than class-leading at Premium pricing.
Built at Plant Oxford at the end of a ten-year production run, the gas Hardtop benefits from a fully debugged assembly process with tight panel gaps and few rattle complaints. The strong J.D. Power quality score supports above-average initial quality, with scattered complaints about interior trim creaks on firm pavement.
MINI USA has only about 100-110 dealers nationwide, mostly co-located with BMW stores in metro markets, an order of magnitude thinner than Toyota or Honda. BMW-affiliated facilities and training help, but owners outside major metros can face long drives for warranty work.
Parts and labor are priced like BMW's, and RepairPal places MINI in the bottom third of brands for average annual repair cost. The large F56 production run means parts are plentiful and the enthusiast aftermarket is deep, which keeps this from sitting lower.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.24D
The 8.8-inch touchscreen set in the round center housing is standard; no larger screen offered on the F56.
The BMW iDrive-derived MINI system is quick and backed by a rotary controller and toggle switches, but the widescreen-in-a-circle layout wastes space and menus are dense.
Apple CarPlay is wireless-only and not standard on the base car, and Android Auto is not offered at all on the US F56.
Native navigation arrives only with the Iconic tier; BMW-derived voice control is functional but basic.
The six-speaker base system is ordinary; the optional 12-speaker Harman Kardon system is a worthwhile upgrade.
A small (about 5-inch) digital driver display on the steering column has been standard since the 2022 refresh; it is legible but minimally configurable.
The F56's MINI Connected hardware gets map and service updates over the air, but not whole-vehicle updates; full OTA arrived with the 2025 OS9 generation.
The MINI app provides remote lock/unlock, vehicle locate, status and send-to-car, but no digital key or remote engine start on gas F56 models.
Front USB-C ports and a 12V outlet; wireless charging only on the Iconic tier, with limited rear power.
Push-button start is standard, but Comfort Access proximity entry requires Signature; no remote start or phone-as-key.
A rear camera and rear parking sensors are standard; Parking Assistant automated parking and front sensors come with Iconic, but no surround-view camera is offered.
A small pop-up combiner-glass HUD is available only on the top Iconic tier.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Cooper Hardtop's weakest categories.0.50F
Two doors, a tight 30.8-inch rear bench and a Marginal IIHS LATCH rating make car-seat duty a daily struggle; the trunk barely fits a stroller.
A 4-star NHTSA overall rating, no IIHS award, and no blind-spot monitoring or lane keeping on any trim leave clear gaps.
With four aboard there is almost no luggage room and the rear seat is cramped; no rear vents or amenities.
Nimble, easy to place and punchy low in the rev range, but the firm ride and some DCT low-speed jerkiness add fatigue.
31 MPG combined is fine, but premium fuel pushes the annual cost to $2,550, above mainstream compacts.
Its tiny footprint and short wheelbase make it one of the easiest cars to park and thread through a city, helped by a standard rear camera and sensors.
No US tow rating and a tiny cargo area; not a work vehicle.
A premium-oriented small car with no fleet or hard-use reputation.
Few work provisions beyond basic cargo tie-downs and accessory roof racks.
Supportive front seats and available adaptive cruise help, but road noise, a firm ride, no lane centering and ~360 miles of range limit it as a mile-eater.
Front-wheel drive only, low ground clearance and no US tow rating; pavement-bound beyond a light bike rack.
Split-folding rear seats open 34 cu ft, which rescues it somewhat, but seats-up space is minimal.
9Driving ExperienceThe Cooper Hardtop's best-graded category.3.07B
The F56's go-kart handling is its defining trait: quick turn-in, tight body control and a short wheelbase that makes it feel nimble and safe.
Quick, well-weighted electric steering with good precision, though not as communicative as older hydraulic Minis.
Light curb weight and firm pedal give confident stops; no 2024-specific instrumented figure retrieved.
The 2.0L turbo delivers strong low-end torque, but the 7-speed dual-clutch can be jerky at parking speeds and auto stop/start is abrupt.
The Cooper S four has an appealing, sporty note but is audible under load; the base 1.5L three is coarser.
A tight turning circle suits its city-car role.
A low, sporty seating position with good front headroom and telescoping wheel, but thick rear pillars and a small rear window limit visibility, and the toggle-switch layout takes learning.
The Cooper S is one of the most fun cars for the money, with a manual still offered; enthusiasts consistently recommend it.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Cooper Hardtop's strongest categories.2.09C
The final-year F56 Cooper comes with LED headlights, an 8.8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, and forward collision warning with city AEB. Heated seats, adaptive cruise, a head-up display and Harman Kardon audio stay locked in the Signature/Iconic trims or packages, so a comparably equipped MINI costs well more than its entry price.
A Cooper S at about $30k delivered lines up against the Golf GTI and Civic Si but gives up rear-seat and cargo space, and options raise the sticker quickly. What buyers get for the premium is character, a premium-feeling cabin, and, unusually in 2024, a manual transmission. That makes it fair value rather than a bargain.
The 2024 Hardtop is broad for a subcompact. It has four powertrains (Cooper 134 hp, Cooper S 189 hp, JCW 228 hp, electric Cooper SE), 2-door and 4-door bodies, a manual or an automatic on the gas models, and Classic/Signature/Iconic equipment tiers with extensive personalization. The only gaps are FWD-only drivetrains and no 4-door JCW.
The Hardtop remains MINI's core nameplate, but volumes are small and shrinking. The 2-door fell 3.7% to 8,445 units in 2024, the 4-door fell 22.4% to 3,216, and brand sales dropped 21.5% during the generational changeover.
MINI is one of the strongest image brands among small cars. It has an iconic design, BMW Group engineering, and a loyal enthusiast following, and 76% of KBB owner reviewers give the 2024 five stars. The small US dealer network and the brand's reputation for repair costs temper the halo.
As the outgoing F56's final model year, 2024 cars were cleared alongside the incoming F66, and MINI's BMW Financial–backed lease and APR support gave real room to negotiate below MSRP. That is solid buyer benefit without fire-sale pricing.
In the US, the 2024 model year is the last of the F56 third generation. That generation launched in 2014 and was facelifted in 2018 and 2021, and the all-new F66/J01 arrived for 2025, so a 2024 buyer is getting a ten-year-old design in the year it was replaced.
Reviewers have long praised the F56's go-kart handling, quick Cooper S, and the available manual. They also criticize the firm ride, cramped rear seat and small cargo area, and the aging tech. It is well liked and often recommended, but rarely a comparison-test winner over the GTI or Civic.
