The verdict

A mixed-report full-size luxury sedan, strong on performance and held back by ownership.

The 2018 Tesla Model S 75D pairs genuinely quick, effortless acceleration (4.2 sec 0-60, 487 lb-ft on tap instantly) with a 17-inch touchscreen and over-the-air updates no rival sedan of its era could match. But the volume 75D's 259-mile EPA range and 120 kW Supercharging ceiling look thin against modern EVs, and the ownership math is rough: roughly $66,600 in projected 5-year depreciation on a ~$97,000 100D, on top of a below-average Consumer Reports reliability score. It's a fast, tech-forward luxury sedan best bought used at a steep discount, not a car to pay full freight for today.

99/100
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

75D is the lowest-priced, highest-volume 2018 Model S configuration; Tesla did not publish a combined hp figure for it directly, but independent spec aggregators consistently corroborate this combined output for the pre-Raven dual-motor 75 kWh powertrain.

Torque
487 lb-ft combined (75D)
100/100
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla does not publish a combined torque figure on its own spec sheet; this is the figure consistently corroborated across independent spec aggregators for the 2018 75D dual-motor powertrain.

0-60 mph time
4.2 sec (75D, Tesla's official rating following the early-2018 drive-unit/software update); 100D ~4.1 sec, P100D 2.4-2.5 sec with Ludicrous+
82/100
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla raised the 75D's official 0-60 rating by a full second (from 5.2 to 4.2 sec) via a drive-unit and software update that took effect for 2018-build cars, making 4.2 sec the correct in-production-year figure rather than the car's original 2016-era rating.

Powertrain refinement93
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Dual-motor EV powertrain delivers immediate, linear torque with no lag or coarseness — a trait reviewers consistently singled out as the Model S's signature strength throughout its first generation, 2018 included.

Transmission behavior95
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Single-speed reduction gear per motor means no shifting at all — power delivery is continuous with no hunting or harshness.

AWD/4WD availability87
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every 2018 Model S trim (75D, 100D, P100D) ships standard with dual-motor AWD and independent front/rear torque control; Tesla had dropped the rear-wheel-drive 75 variant from the lineup by this model year, so AWD is universal across the range rather than optional.

Powertrain lineup breadth20
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Battery-electric only — no gas, hybrid, or PHEV alternative is offered on the nameplate; the only choice is between battery-size and performance tiers, all EV.

NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5/5 frontal, 5/5 side, 5/5 rollover)
100/100
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The second-generation Model S (facelifted Apr 2016, carried through 2018) retains the 5-star overall NHTSA rating with 5 stars in every subcategory that the original 2013 testing established; NHTSA has not re-tested the body-in-white since.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness62
#4 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the facelifted Model S (2016-18 build, which covers this 2018 model year) Good on roof strength and head restraints/seats, and Superior on vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, but Acceptable on small overlap front (a seatbelt issue let the dummy's head reach the steering wheel through the airbag) and Poor on headlights — the combination rules out Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+, so this lands in the mid-tier band despite strong raw crashworthiness.

Standard ADAS suite breadth58
#4 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every 2018 Model S ships with the AP2.5 camera/radar/sonar hardware and a real standard safety layer (automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, side collision warning, blind-spot warning, obstacle-aware acceleration, rear cross-traffic alert on the backup camera), but the convenience layer buyers associate with 'Autopilot' — Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer lane centering — is gated behind the $5,000 Enhanced Autopilot option on every trim, so the volume configuration's out-of-the-box ADC/lane-centering capability is optional, not standard.

Automatic emergency braking performance85
#2 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the standard-fit front crash prevention system Superior, its top tier, avoiding collisions in both the 12 mph and 25 mph vehicle-to-vehicle test scenarios; IIHS did not publish a separate pedestrian AEB rating for this generation, so the score reflects the strong vehicle-to-vehicle result without an unverified pedestrian figure.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage60
#4 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert are present standard, but both are alert-only (a visual bar on the backup-camera display plus an optional chime) rather than active-intervention systems, and the blind-spot system itself has drawn owner complaints about A-pillar and mirror blind zones it doesn't fully cover.

Lane keeping & centering68
#3 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Autosteer, available only with the optional Enhanced Autopilot package, was among the more capable lane-centering systems on sale in 2018 and owners frequently described it as confident on clear highway lane markings, but period reviews and forum threads also report persistent small corrective 'ping-pong' steering inputs that some passengers found uncomfortable, keeping it out of the top tier.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist70
#3 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Traffic-Aware Cruise Control covers the full speed range down to a stop and resumes smoothly in the Enhanced Autopilot bundle, and combined with Autosteer it functioned as one of the more usable highway-assist combinations available in 2018, but it remained a paid option rather than standard equipment and shared the same lane-centering roughness noted above.

Hands-free driving availability15
#2 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Autosteer in 2018 required hands on the wheel (torque-sensing nag) and was not a certified hands-free system on any road; no hands-free highway driving mode existed on the Model S at this model year.

Headlight performance25
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the 2018 Model S's LED reflector headlights — both the standard and adaptive/curve-adaptive versions — Poor, its lowest rating, citing excess glare on low beam and inadequate visibility in curve testing; this was the standard-fit headlight across the range, not a lower-trim-only issue.

Outward visibility55
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The low, sweeping liftback greenhouse and fixed glass roof give decent rearward and overhead visibility, but owners consistently flag a thick front-left A-pillar that can fully obscure a car approaching at an angle, and the standard 360-degree camera system wasn't yet available to compensate until the later hardware refresh — a mixed, average result rather than excellent or poor.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability60
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Model S's rear doors open wide and the rear bench offers full-size-sedan space for two LATCH-equipped child seats, which is workable, but the liftback's lower anchor points sit deep in the firm seat bight and the standard 5-seat configuration's center position lacks a dedicated LATCH anchor, so fitting three seats across or digging out the outboard anchors takes more effort than in a dedicated family sedan.

4Space & ComfortOne of the Model S's strongest categories.2.72B-

Rear legroom is adequate but unremarkable for a full-size luxury sedan of this footprint.

Cargo/trunk volume
26.3 cu ft rear trunk + ~2.1 cu ft front trunk (frunk); 58.1 cu ft with rear seats folded
100/100
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The hatchback-style rear trunk plus a separate front trunk give the Model S unusually large total cargo capacity for a sedan.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions70
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Dual trunks (frunk + hatch trunk) and a flat load floor are genuine advantages, but the pre-refresh open center console bin is shallow and criticized for weak cupholder/phone placement.

Seat comfort75
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Front seats are well-shaped and widely praised for daily comfort; some reviewers note the base cushions are flatter than rival German luxury sedans.

Ride quality72
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Air suspension (standard on higher trims, optional on 75D) delivers a controlled ride that's firm but composed, short of segment-leading plushness.

Cabin quietness75
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No engine noise and decent sound insulation make for a quiet cabin, though wind/road noise at highway speed is average rather than class-leading for 2018.

Climate & comfort features62
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Heated front seats are standard, but heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel require the optional Subzero Weather Package rather than coming standard across the lineup.

5Cost of OwnershipThe Model S's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Base MSRP
$75,700 (75D, incl. $1,200 destination)
0/100
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

75D was the entry trim for most of MY2018 before Tesla discontinued it later in the year; sources show some variance ($74,500–$78,125) reflecting mid-year price changes.

Volume-Trim Price
$97,000 (100D, the long-range volume configuration)
0/100
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

100D (335-mi range) was the mainstream long-range pick once 75D's range looked thin next to rivals' gas range; treated as the representative volume trim.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$2,200 (no oil changes/fewer wear items, offset by known MCU1/suspension repair costs on this generation)
100/100
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

CarEdge's aggregate estimate ($1,561) likely understates real-world cost for this specific generation, which has well-documented post-warranty MCU1 touchscreen and air-suspension failures; adjusted modestly upward.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~31% of MSRP retained after 5 years
0/100
#4 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Model S depreciates steeply versus the sedan norm, driven by frequent price cuts on new units, federal tax-credit phase-out timing, and rapid Autopilot/hardware iteration that ages older cars.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#2 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Tesla New Vehicle Limited Warranty for the period; mid-pack versus the 3–5 yr luxury-sedan band.

Powertrain warranty
8 yr / unlimited miles, battery & drive unit
60/100
#2 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Unlimited-mile battery/drive-unit coverage for this generation was more generous than the 8yr/150,000-mi cap Tesla later standardized.

Complimentary maintenance & perks55
#4 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No prepaid/included scheduled-maintenance plan was bundled by 2018 (Tesla had moved away from its earlier annual-service package), but cars ordered April 2017–Nov 2018 included 400 kWh/yr of Supercharging credit (~1,000 mi) plus standard roadside assistance under warranty — basic rather than generous.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$68,839 (≈$66,639 depreciation + $2,200 maintenance)
0/100
#3 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$97,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (31.3% retained, or about $30,361) leaves about $66,639 in depreciation. Add the projected $2,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $68,839 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the Model S's weakest categories.0.99F
Predicted reliability35
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Consumer Reports rated the 2018 Model S reliability below average and the car fell off CR's Recommended list, with owners flagging suspension and other drivetrain-adjacent complaints. This is a below-average predicted-reliability signal from the single most-cited source for this item.

Brand reliability track record32
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

J.D. Power's official 2018 VDS excluded Tesla for insufficient survey responses, but Consumer Reports' 2018 brand reliability rankings placed Tesla 27th, down six spots from the prior year — consistent with the brand's later-confirmed bottom-third standing (J.D. Power's 2021 VDS, covering MY2018 vehicles retrospectively, scored Tesla 176 PP100, roughly 31st of 34 brands) rather than a one-year anomaly.

Recall & TSB history42
#4 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA/cars.com list 16 recall campaigns touching the 2018 model year, including real hardware content: cars built before Tesla's roughly-March-2018 MCU2 switchover share the Tegra 3/eMMC center-display chip later recalled across ~135,000 2012-2018 Model S/X units (rearview camera and HVAC-control loss as the eMMC wears out), plus a front-trunk-latch misalignment campaign (2014-2021 cars) and OTA-remedied seat-belt-warning and forward-collision-avoidance software items. On top of the formal recalls, 2018 sits inside the September-2013-to-October-2018 production window named in control-arm/suspension class-action litigation and at least three Tesla TSBs — Tesla has told NHTSA there is no US defect and never recalled it domestically (China ordered a ~40,000-unit suspension recall for the same window in 2020), so it counts as a documented concern without open-recall status. High count, with a genuine hardware recall in the mix.

Powertrain durability reputation60
#4 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

By MY2018 the worst of the 2012-2015 drive-unit replacement wave was behind the platform, and fleet-wide battery data later confirmed this generation's pack holds up well (roughly 91% capacity at 100k miles, 88% at 200k). But a 2018 car still carries some of the generation's open questions at the time of sale — the drive-unit coolant-intrusion failure mode wasn't fully eliminated until after this era, and the same 2013-2018 window carries the unresolved control-arm concern above — so it's rated below the more mature, longer-track-record 2020 car rather than at its level.

Interior material quality62
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The pre-Palladium cabin — leather seating, glass roof, large portrait touchscreen — read as genuinely premium for the era and Edmunds' expert test (8.6/10 overall) praised the materials as 'excellent' and the cabin as feeling expensive. Held below the segment's German/Japanese full-size-luxury benchmarks because secondary switchgear and lower-zone plastics were consistently flagged as a step behind rivals at the same price.

Fit & finish65
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

By 2018, several years after the original launch-era panel-gap reputation, Edmunds' expert test specifically called out tight panel gaps and an expensive-feeling assembly. Scored a notch below 'class-leading' rather than top-tier because owner community reports through this era still documented inconsistent gap measurements on individual cars, so the tight-gaps verdict wasn't universal.

Dealer & service network38
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2018 is close to the low point for Tesla's service infrastructure: only 378 service centers worldwide (about 300 outside California) plus 411 mobile units were covering a company that delivered 245,240 vehicles that year, and by Q4 2018 the network was overwhelmed — unreturned calls/emails, delayed repairs, and crash-damaged cars waiting months for parts were widely reported. Thinner and more strained than the already-below-average network the 2020 car inherited.

Parts availability & repair cost45
#3 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Routine ownership cost is genuinely low for the segment — no oil or transmission service and regenerative braking extend wear-item life, and aggregate lifetime-cost studies for this nameplate land well under the luxury-sedan average. But parts flow only through Tesla-controlled channels with no independent aftermarket, and the same overwhelmed 2018 service network above meant collision and body parts were a specific bottleneck that year, on top of the generally high cost of out-of-warranty high-voltage components.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.51C+
Touchscreen size
17 in portrait touchscreen (standard, all trims)
100/100
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The signature 17-inch vertical touchscreen was standard across the 2018 Model S lineup, far larger than any segment rival of the era.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness85
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The large, fast, regularly-updated touchscreen interface was widely regarded as the most capable system in the segment, even though nearly all climate/vehicle functions route through the screen rather than physical controls.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto15
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla has never offered Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on any Model S, relying entirely on its own in-house infotainment stack and Bluetooth audio/phone streaming.

Voice control & native navigation62
#3 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Built-in navigation with live traffic was standard and capable, but the 2018 voice assistant handled only basic commands (nav destinations, phone calls) well before Tesla's later natural-language voice overhaul.

Audio system quality75
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 10-speaker premium sound system was standard, regarded as good though not best-in-class against dedicated luxury-brand audio systems of 2018.

Digital instrument cluster85
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A fully digital, configurable driver display ahead of the steering wheel was standard on every 2018 Model S, years ahead of most competitors that still used analog clusters.

OTA update capability98
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Whole-vehicle over-the-air software updates that added or improved features were Tesla's defining technology advantage in 2018, unmatched by any competitor.

Companion app & remote functions90
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The free Tesla app provided remote climate preconditioning, lock/unlock, vehicle locate, charge monitoring, and phone-based keyless unlock in 2018 — well ahead of rival automaker apps of the era.

Charging ports & device power45
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Only two USB-A ports in the front console were standard in 2018, with no rear-seat USB and no factory wireless charging pad (aftermarket trays were common) — thin provisioning next to the big touchscreen.

Keyless & remote access82
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Proximity key-fob entry plus phone-as-key unlock/start via the Tesla app were both standard in 2018, giving strong keyless convenience even without a dedicated NFC card key (added in later refreshes).

Camera & parking aids55
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A rear camera and front/rear ultrasonic parking sensors were standard, but a true surround/360-degree camera visualization wasn't exposed in the 2018 software despite Autopilot 2.5 cameras being present — that UI came in later updates.

Head-up display availability10
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No head-up display has ever been offered on the Model S, including the 2018 model year.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.93C-
Kid & car-seat practicality68
#2 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Wide rear door openings and standard LATCH anchors make installing car seats straightforward, but the low rear seat cushion and limited rear headroom (35.3 in) make it a tighter fit for growing kids than a typical SUV.

Family safety package85
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Model S earned top NHTSA crash ratings and included Autopilot driver-assist hardware/software (adaptive cruise, lane keeping, automatic emergency braking) as standard equipment on every 2018 trim, not gated to upper trims.

Family road-trip comfort68
#4 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Decent rear legroom and a huge total cargo capacity (trunk + frunk) support family trips, but rear climate/entertainment amenities are basic and heated rear seats require an options package.

Daily driving ease85
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Instant EV torque, one-pedal-style regen, and standard Autopilot (adaptive cruise + lane centering) make stop-and-go traffic and highway commuting notably relaxed for 2018.

Commuting cost efficiency80
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Electricity cost per mile is far below gasoline-equivalent running costs for a car this size, offsetting the Model S's high purchase price for daily commuting.

Parking & maneuverability52
#2 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At 196 in long with a wide 40.3 ft curb-to-curb turning circle, the Model S is noticeably less nimble in tight urban parking than a compact or mid-size sedan, despite standard parking sensors and a rear camera.

Work capability20
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Model S sedan has no towing capacity and is not marketed or equipped for work duty; its low unibody trunk and no tow hitch option rule out meaningful work use.

Durability for work duty25
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

As a luxury sedan with no fleet/commercial-duty positioning, the Model S has no track record or design intent for hard-use durability.

Jobsite & upfit practicality15
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No tie-downs, bed, or upfit ecosystem exists for a luxury sedan like the Model S; its low ride height and carpeted trunk are unsuited to jobsite use.

Long-distance comfort & range80
#3 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume 75D's EPA range (~259 mi) and 100D's ~335 mi, paired with the (then) fast-growing Supercharger network, standard Autopilot to ease fatigue, and comfortable front seats, made the Model S a strong long-distance tourer for 2018.

Outdoor & adventure capability42
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

AWD (on D-suffix trims) helps in light inclement conditions, but low ground clearance, no roof rack/accessory ecosystem, and sedan-standard tires make it a pavement-oriented car rather than an adventure vehicle.

Gear & luggage flexibility70
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The combination of a large hatch-style trunk, front trunk, and 60/40 folding rear seats (58.1 cu ft total with seats folded) gives genuinely flexible gear-hauling capacity for a sedan, though no roof rack is offered.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the Model S's strongest categories.2.92B-
Handling & agility80
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A low center of gravity from the floor-mounted battery pack gives the Model S surprisingly flat, composed cornering and little body roll for its size and weight, with sharp steering response.

Steering feel70
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Steering is accurate, well-weighted, and quick with adjustable effort modes, though like most EVs of the era it offers limited genuine road feedback.

Braking confidence78
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Panic-stop distances around 102 ft from 60 mph are strong and consistent, and the 2018 regenerative-braking blend gives a more predictable pedal feel than earlier Model S model years.

Powertrain smoothness & response92
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Dual electric motors deliver instantaneous, perfectly linear torque with no shift shock or stop-start roughness, a hallmark EV advantage over every 2018 combustion or hybrid rival.

Drivetrain noise & vibration85
#2 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The electric motors are near-silent at cruising speed with only a faint whine under hard acceleration, and no vibration is transmitted through the controls.

Turning circle
40.3 ft curb-to-curb (40.7 ft reported for AWD configurations)
0/100
#3 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At roughly 40.3-40.7 ft, the Model S has one of the widest turning circles in the sedan segment, a direct consequence of its long wheelbase.

Driving position & ergonomics68
#4 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A low, sporty seating position and good outward visibility are strengths, but routing nearly every climate and vehicle control through the single 17-inch touchscreen (minimal physical buttons) is a real ergonomic trade-off versus 2018 rivals.

Fun-to-drive factor75
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Even the volume 75D's strong instant-torque acceleration (roughly low-4-second 0-60 mph) makes it genuinely enjoyable to drive daily, though it's a notch below the thrill of the range-topping P100D Ludicrous.

10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.21C
Standard equipment generosity60
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Base 75D included heated power front seats, navigation, rearview camera, standard automatic emergency braking, and Autopilot hardware — solid for the price, but Autopilot/Enhanced Autopilot software, premium interior, panoramic roof, and higher-end audio were all extra-cost options rather than standard.

Feature value per dollar68
#3 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Instant-torque performance, supercharger network access, and over-the-air software updates gave the Model S genuine differentiation versus German luxury-sedan rivals at similar transaction prices, even though the base price itself sits at the top of the sedan band.

Trim & configuration breadth52
#4 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Only three trims (75D, 100D, P100D), all dual-motor AWD by 2018 with rear-wheel-drive and smaller-battery options having been dropped — a narrower, take-it-or-leave-it lineup versus rival sedans' broader trim/engine grids.

Sales popularity & market acceptance80
#1 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

With roughly 30,000 US units sold in 2018, Model S was outselling established full-size luxury-sedan rivals like the S-Class and 7 Series in the US market, making it a segment sales leader despite its age.

Brand desirability & image85
#2 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla carried strong aspirational brand cachet in 2018 as the standard-bearer of the EV transition, with a loyal buyer base and high cultural visibility, despite production-hell headlines and Autopilot controversy that year.

Deals & incentive availability55
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's direct-sales, fixed-price model meant essentially no dealer-style discounting or negotiation, but the full $7,500 federal EV tax credit was still available for all of 2018 (phase-out began Jan 2019), materially helping buyer economics.

Model freshness38
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Model S platform dates to 2012 with no full redesign by 2018 — only a 2016 facelift (nose cone removal) and the 2018 switch to standard dual-motor AWD — making it a six-year-old generation versus newer rival platforms.

Critical reception & awards60
#5 of 5 Full-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers continued to praise range, performance and tech in 2018, but Consumer Reports dropped Model S from its recommended list that year over air-suspension and MCU/touchscreen reliability complaints, and no major new comparison-test or 'Car of the Year' wins landed on this specific model year (the headline Motor Trend COTY was 2013, a different generation).
