The verdict
A mixed-report full-size luxury sedan, strong on performance and held back by ownership.
The 2020 Model S Long Range Plus was the first EV ever to crack 400 miles of EPA range (402 mi) and still backs that up with a 3.7-second 0-60 time, a 17-inch touchscreen, and a frunk-plus-liftback cargo hold that swallows 28.4 cu ft with the seats up. The tradeoffs are real: cat5 Cost of Ownership bottoms out at 12.8/100 on a car that started near $75,000 and was tracking toward roughly 38% resale retention after five years, Consumer Reports pulled its recommendation over reliability, and rear headroom (35.3 in) and legroom (35.4 in) trail the rest of the full-size luxury class. It's the right car for a tech-forward buyer chasing range and straight-line speed who can absorb the depreciation; it's the wrong car for anyone cross-shopping on total ownership cost or rear-seat space.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Instant, class-leading acceleration
- First EV to break 400 miles, with Supercharger access to match
- Frunk-plus-liftback cargo beats a normal sedan trunk
What holds it back
- Brutal cost of ownership and depreciation
- Reliability reputation dragged the brand's recommendation
- Rear seat is the tightest spot in its class

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Model S's best-graded category.3.87A+
Tesla does not publish an official SAE horsepower figure for the Model S; 534 hp is the direct kW-to-hp conversion of the manufacturer's stated 398 kW combined output for the dual-motor Long Range Plus, the 2020 volume trim.
Combined torque for the dual-motor Long Range Plus; Tesla does not break this out officially but third-party spec aggregators converge on this figure.
Manufacturer-quoted 0-60 for the volume Long Range Plus trim; the Performance trim with Ludicrous mode is substantially quicker.
Dual permanent-magnet motors deliver instantaneous, linear torque with zero lag or hesitation under any throttle input, consistently praised across reviews as class-leading.
Single-speed fixed-gear reduction on each motor; no shifting, hunting, or gear selection to evaluate, and power delivery is perfectly linear.
Dual-motor AWD is standard across the entire 2020 lineup (Long Range Plus and Performance) with software-controlled, near-instantaneous front/rear torque vectoring, though it lacks a mechanical low-range or dedicated terrain modes (not expected on a luxury sedan).
The 2020 Model S is offered in only one powertrain architecture (dual-motor electric); Long Range Plus and Performance are two tunes of the same EV drivetrain, not distinct powertrain types, so there is no gas, hybrid, or single-motor option to choose from.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Model S's strongest categories.2.96B-
EPA combined MPGe for the 2020 Model S Long Range Plus, the volume trim.
EPA city MPGe for the 2020 Model S Long Range Plus.
EPA highway MPGe for the 2020 Model S Long Range Plus.
The mid-2020 Long Range Plus update made the Model S the first EV with an EPA-rated range over 400 miles; this is the figure fueleconomy.gov lists for the 2020 model year.
Tesla raised the Model S/X Supercharging ceiling twice during 2020 (225 kW in June, 250 kW on cars built from around July 2020 with V3 Supercharger hardware); 250 kW is the peak rate for the majority of 2020 Long Range Plus production.
The 100 kWh pack's charging curve tapers well before the 250 kW peak is sustained, so real-world 10-80% times land in the low-to-mid 30s despite the high headline rate.
EPA's standard annual energy cost estimate at 15,000 miles/year and its default electricity price assumption.
No gasoline of any grade is required; home Level 2 charging is inexpensive and the Model S has access to Tesla's own Supercharger network, the most extensive fast-charging network available to any EV in 2020.
3SafetyGrades above the middle of the scale.2.71B-
NHTSA awarded the Model S 5-star overall and 5-star rollover ratings on the pre-facelift (2012-generation) structure the 2020 model year continues to use; Tesla's own release and multiple outlets corroborate the 5-star overall result.
IIHS rated the 2020 Model S Good in its primary crashworthiness tests but Acceptable on the driver-side small overlap front test, and the car did not earn a Top Safety Pick award — a Poor headlight rating (see 3.3.1) is itself disqualifying for any award. Mostly-Good results with one Acceptable and no award places it in the middle band rather than the top.
Tesla sells the Model S as effectively one hardware spec: standard Autopilot (forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, Autosteer, and a camera/ultrasonic-based blind-spot warning) ships on every 2020 trim with no option-gating. The gap is a dedicated rear cross-traffic alert, which Tesla did not brand as a separate feature at this time.
IIHS rated the standard AEB system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, avoiding collision in both the 12 mph and 25 mph test scenarios; no separate pedestrian or nighttime sub-score was published for this model year to corroborate the top of the band.
Blind Spot Collision Warning is standard but alert-only (camera/ultrasonic-based, visualized in the instrument cluster, no automated braking intervention), and the Model S lacks a dedicated rear cross-traffic alert at this model year.
Autosteer's vision-based lane centering is widely regarded by owners and reviewers as smooth and confidence-inspiring on well-marked highways, with acknowledged weak spots on worn or shadowed lane markings and in heavy curves.
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control plus standard Navigate on Autopilot (automatic lane changes and interchange handling) gives the Model S a capable full-speed-range highway assist package, but 2020-era owners widely reported phantom-braking events from the radar-based system, a documented rough edge.
Neither standard Autopilot nor the optional Full Self-Driving Capability is hands-free in 2020 — Autosteer is enforced by a steering-wheel torque sensor, and the FSD Beta that began rolling out in October 2020 to a small cohort was still a supervised feature requiring hands on the wheel. No genuine hands-free option existed on this model year.
IIHS rated the Model S's LED headlights Poor across all trims — fair low-beam visibility on straightaways but inadequate on curves in all four test configurations, with some glare noted — the single IIHS test result pulling the car out of Top Safety Pick contention.
A low hood and large glass area give good forward sightlines, but reviewers consistently flag a narrow, high-set rear window and compromised rear three-quarter visibility around the thick D-pillars.
The Model S has two full sets of lower LATCH anchors plus a tether for the rear middle seat, but owners report the anchors sit behind a seam/flap that leaves tight clearance and makes clipping a car seat in more fiddly than average — workable, not easy.
4Space & ComfortGrades above the middle of the scale.2.93B-
The 2020 Model S lineup (Long Range Plus, the volume trim after the Standard Range Plus was discontinued in spring 2020, and Performance) is a standard five-seat liftback sedan; a rear-facing 2-seat jump-seat option existed for the 7-seat configuration but is not the volume trim.
Front headroom for the pre-2021-refresh Model S body, unchanged for 2020; the sloping fastback roofline costs some headroom versus a traditional 3-box sedan but is mid-pack for a full-size luxury sedan.
Front legroom is generous and typical for the full-size luxury class, aided by the flat EV floor with no transmission tunnel.
The fastback roofline that gives the Model S its large liftback trunk cuts into rear headroom; at 35.3 in it sits at the bottom of the full-size sedan band and taller rear passengers notice it.
Rear legroom is adequate but unremarkable for the segment — the flat floor helps middle-seat passengers, but 35.4 in trails the roomiest full-size luxury sedans.
As a liftback rather than a conventional trunk, the Model S carries far more cargo than a normal sedan's trunk band assumes, and adds a front trunk the combustion competition can't match.
The front trunk plus a deep, lockable liftback cargo bay with an underfloor compartment and a large sliding center console bin give the Model S genuinely class-leading everyday storage versatility for a sedan.
Front seats are well-bolstered and supportive on long drives; the low-set rear bench (packaging the battery pack) leaves taller rear passengers sitting knees-up, a recurring complaint in period reviews.
The air-suspension-equipped Long Range Plus rides composed and well-damped over most surfaces; the Performance trim's larger wheels trade some compliance for sharper body control.
The electric powertrain removes engine noise entirely and highway refinement is good, though some period reviews note mild wind noise around the mirrors and glass roof at speed.
Heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and Tesla's HEPA 'Bio-Weapon Defense Mode' cabin air filtration are standard across the 2020 lineup — a rich comfort package with no trim gating.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Model S's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Long Range Plus was the sole entry trim in 2020 (Standard Range had already been dropped from the Model S lineup); base pricing moved repeatedly during the year as Tesla cut prices in response to tax-credit phase-out and competitive pressure.
With only two trims offered (Long Range Plus and Performance), Long Range Plus was both the entry and volume trim; Performance AWD started at $91,990.
Edmunds' True Cost to Own for the 2020 Model S Long Range Plus projects above-average 5-year maintenance and repair costs, reflecting Tesla's limited service network and comparatively costly body/EV-specific parts versus mainstream sedans; CarEdge's generic Tesla fleet estimate is far lower but not year/trim-specific.
Real-world tracking of 2020 Model S units at the ~5-year mark shows a wide spread (roughly 31%–45% retained) depending on starting price and condition; Tesla's repeated new-vehicle price cuts and the 2021 refresh accelerated used-value declines versus typical full-size luxury sedans.
Standard Tesla New Vehicle Limited Warranty for the 2020 Model S.
Tesla's Model S battery and drive unit warranty for Long Range/Performance dual-motor configurations in 2020.
No complimentary scheduled-maintenance program came with a 2020 Model S purchase, and Tesla removed free unlimited Supercharging as a standard perk on new Model S/X orders in May 2020. Roadside assistance is included only for the duration of the 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and only covers towing when the immobilizing issue is itself a warranty claim (flat-tire/lockout tows capped at 50 miles).
$74,990 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (38% retained, or about $28,496) leaves about $46,494 in depreciation. Add the projected $14,960 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $61,454 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Model S's weakest categories.1.11D
Consumer Reports' own predicted-reliability data for the 2020 Model S was poor enough that CR pulled its Recommended badge from the model in November 2020, citing the Model S specifically alongside a panned new Model Y.
Tesla's brand-level dependability standing through this generation was consistently near the bottom of industry studies, not a one-year blip.
NHTSA logged a high recall count against this model year, but the pattern is mostly minor software/UX defects (seat-belt chime logic, pedestrian-warning sound muting, instrument-cluster font size) corrected via free OTA updates rather than a hardware recall requiring a service visit — typical volume, below-typical severity.
By the 2020 model year the pack chemistry/design dated from the mid-2010s rework (the troubled 2012-2015 packs are off the used-car population this 2020 car doesn't share), and reported failure rates had fallen under 1%, trending toward 0.3% by 2019; drive units/battery are backed by an 8-year/150,000-mile, 70%-capacity warranty. Reputation isn't spotless — drive-unit replacements still occur and are costly when they do — but the dominant pattern is 'fails early under warranty or runs a long time,' not a systemic wear-out.
The cabin's minimalist design and glass roof read as premium and the tech integration (single large touchscreen, by 2020 running the Tegra/Intel-era UI) still impressed, but reviewers and owners through this generation flagged harder, lower-grade plastics in secondary touch zones than German rivals at the same price point.
Independent panel-gap measurements on a 2020 Model S showed inconsistent, wider-than-typical gaps versus luxury-sedan norms, and expert assembly-quality assessments placed it mid-pack rather than at the top of the segment.
Tesla's company-owned service network was considerably thinner than an established luxury brand's dealer footprint in 2020, and service-wait complaints were well documented, though mobile service techs and growing Supercharger/service-center buildout partially offset the gap.
Routine running costs are low versus the segment because there's no oil/transmission service and fewer wear items, but Tesla tightly controls parts distribution with essentially no independent aftermarket, and the few high-voltage components that do fail (battery pack, drive unit) are both slow to source and very expensive out of warranty.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades above the middle of the scale.2.72B-
The 2020 Model S carries over the pre-refresh 17-inch portrait-orientation center touchscreen, standard across Long Range Plus and Performance; it was by far the largest screen in the segment until the facelift era.
The Intel Atom-based system introduced around 2018 is fast and visually clean, and OTA updates kept improving it through 2020, but nearly every function — climate, mirrors, glovebox — is buried in the touchscreen with very few physical controls, which period reviewers flagged as a usability tax.
Tesla does not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on any 2020 Model S trim, by design, in favor of its own in-house infotainment and navigation stack.
2020-model-year voice commands cover basic functions (navigation destinations, climate, media) but are noticeably less capable than the 'Hey Tesla' natural-language assistant added in later years; native navigation integrates real-time Supercharger routing, which was ahead of most rivals' embedded nav at the time.
A premium audio system with roughly 500 watts and 14 speakers is standard on every 2020 Model S trim, consistently rated among the best stock systems in the luxury segment.
A fully digital, configurable instrument display sits ahead of the driver on every 2020 Model S, showing speed, Autopilot visualization, range and trip data with no analog gauges at all.
Tesla's whole-vehicle over-the-air update program — adding features, improving range estimation and Autopilot behavior, and fixing bugs without a dealer visit — was the clear 2020 segment benchmark, exemplified by the mid-year Long Range Plus efficiency update delivered partly via software.
The Tesla app provides remote climate preconditioning, lock/unlock, vehicle locate, Summon, and phone-as-key convenience at no extra cost; only a few connectivity extras (live traffic, streaming, in-app browser) sit behind the Premium Connectivity subscription introduced in 2018.
2020 Model S offers USB-A ports front and rear plus a factory-integrated Qi wireless charging tray added to the center console during the model year, but it predates the USB-C ports that arrived with the 2021 refresh.
Flush door handles present automatically on approach, and entry/start work via a Bluetooth phone key or a key card with no physical key to carry — a more complete keyless experience than most 2020 rivals offered.
An 8-camera 360-degree surround view (enabled via software update) plus ultrasonic sensors and Autopark/Summon parking assistance were standard on 2020 Model S, ahead of many luxury-sedan rivals that gated 360 cameras to top trims.
No head-up display was offered on the Model S in 2020 (or any model year); the large digital instrument cluster is the only driver display.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Model S's weakest categories.1.90C-
LATCH anchors and a flat rear floor help car-seat installation, and the combined frunk/liftback trunk swallows strollers and gear easily, but the low rear door sills and low-set rear cushion make buckling a child seat more of a stoop than in a taller-riding rival.
The 2020 Model S earned 5-star NHTSA ratings across every subcategory and IIHS 'Good' on all crash tests but driver-side small overlap ('Acceptable'), with automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist — core Autopilot hardware — standard on every trim, not gated to an options package.
Dual-zone climate, a quiet cabin and the segment-leading 402-mile range make for an easy multi-hour family trip, but rear legroom and headroom are only middling for the class and the 2020 car has no rear-seat entertainment screen (that arrived with the 2021 refresh).
Instant, smooth power delivery with no gear-hunting, strong regenerative braking that approaches one-pedal driving, and Autopilot's standard adaptive cruise and lane-centering make stop-and-go traffic notably low-effort.
EPA's $650/yr estimated energy cost and the absence of oil changes, spark plugs or a multi-speed transmission to service make the Model S dramatically cheaper to run per mile than any gas-powered rival in its class.
A tight-for-its-size roughly 37-foot turning circle and standard 360-degree camera visualization with Autopark ease city parking, but the Model S remains a full-size sedan with the footprint that implies in tight urban spaces.
Tesla offered no factory tow rating or hitch for the Model S through 2020 (unlike the Model X), and its liftback cargo area, while large for a sedan, is not designed for work-tool hauling.
The Model S is a luxury sedan with no fleet-work pedigree, low-hanging liftback trunk and lower ground clearance than any work-oriented vehicle; nothing about its design or marketing targets abuse-tolerant daily work use.
No bed, onboard 120V power outlets, tie-down points or upfit ecosystem exist on the Model S; it offers essentially nothing for jobsite use.
The 2020 Long Range Plus's EPA-rated 402 miles made it the first EV ever to break 400 miles, paired with a quiet highway ride, comfortable front seats and standard Autopilot adaptive cruise/lane-centering that meaningfully reduces long-drive fatigue, plus access to Tesla's extensive Supercharger network for quick stops.
Standard dual-motor AWD helps in light rain or snow, but low ground clearance, no factory roof rack mounting and no tow rating leave it poorly suited to gravel roads, camping gear, or towing toys.
The combined 28.4 cu ft of trunk-plus-frunk space (58.1 cu ft with the 60/40 rear seats folded) handles normal luggage and moderate gear well for a sedan, but the lack of roof rails or a factory roof rack option caps how much bulky outdoor gear it can carry versus an SUV or wagon.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Model S's strongest categories.3.13B
Despite curb weights north of 4,700 lbs, the low-mounted 100 kWh battery gives the Model S an exceptionally low center of gravity, and the dual-motor Long Range Plus corners flat and composed with quick, confidence-inspiring responses for a full-size sedan.
Steering is accurate and well-weighted with selectable effort settings, but reviewers consistently describe it as numb, with little genuine road feedback reaching the driver's hands.
Regenerative braking blends smoothly into the friction brakes and strong regen allows near one-pedal driving, but instrumented stopping distances and pedal feel from the conventional brakes have drawn mixed, average-for-class notices rather than standout praise.
Dual electric motors deliver instant, perfectly linear torque with no shift shock, turbo lag, or stop-start shudder of any kind — among the smoothest powertrains in any vehicle on sale in 2020.
The dual-motor setup produces only a faint, unobtrusive electric whine under hard acceleration and is otherwise near-silent, with no combustion noise or vibration to isolate.
A roughly 37.1 ft curb-to-curb turning circle is tight for a full-size sedan of the Model S's footprint, though some trim/wheel configurations have been cited up to ~40 ft.
A wide seat and wheel adjustment range and good forward visibility suit most driver sizes, but routing basic controls like mirror adjustment and glovebox release through the touchscreen instead of physical switches complicates the ergonomics versus traditional luxury-sedan rivals.
Even the volume Long Range Plus trim's 3.7-second 0-60 time and instant throttle response make the Model S genuinely entertaining in a straight line, and its low-slung handling adds to the appeal, though it leans toward effortless rather than classically engaging.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.15C
The sole 2020 entry trim (Long Range Plus) included premium interior materials, 17-inch center touchscreen with navigation, 12-way power heated front seats, glass roof, HEPA cabin air filtration, premium audio, and standard Autopilot (adaptive cruise + lane keeping) — well ahead of what rival luxury sedans include at their base price. Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving remained costly options (~$3,000–$8,000), which keeps this short of a perfect score.
For ~$75K, the 2020 Long Range Plus delivered 391 miles of EPA range (class-leading for any EV at the time) and low-3-second 0-60 performance that undercut gas and EV rivals at or above its price point (Porsche Taycan Turbo, Panamera 4S). Performance AWD at $92K offered supercar-rivaling acceleration for well under supercar money.
2020 Model S offered only two trims (Long Range Plus and Performance), no body-style or drivetrain variety, and limited option packages beyond paint/wheels/interior color/FSD — a narrow, take-it-or-leave-it lineup versus rivals offering 4+ trims and multiple drivetrain/engine choices.
US Model S sales fell to roughly 20,300 units in 2020, well down from its 2015-2017 peak as Model 3 cannibalized demand and the platform aged — but that volume still outsold traditional full-size luxury rivals like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series in the US that year, keeping it the de facto segment leader by units even while declining.
Tesla's brand was at a high point of desirability in 2020 — strong stock-market momentum, a loyal owner base, and halo status as the EV pioneer brand, even as the Model S itself aged within its generation.
Tesla sold at fixed, non-negotiable pricing with no dealer network and essentially no discounting in 2020, and the federal EV tax credit had already phased down to $0 for Tesla as of January 1, 2020 after it crossed the 200,000-vehicle cap — buyers had no federal incentive and no haggling room.
The 2020 Model S was built on the same core platform and generation introduced in 2012, with only incremental updates since — the major interior/yoke/powertrain refresh did not arrive until the 2021 model year, so 2020 represents the car at its most dated point in the generation.
Reviewers in 2020 still praised the Model S's range, performance and tech leadership, but it was no longer the automatic comparison-test winner it had been earlier in the decade — the newly launched Porsche Taycan drew direct, sometimes favorable, comparisons on driving dynamics and interior tech, and Motor Trend's 2020 Car of the Year attention shifted to the Model 3.
