The 2026 Model S is still the most complete long-distance electric car you can buy for the money: $84,990 gets you 670 hp, a 3.1-second 0-60, roughly 410 miles of range and direct Supercharger access — a combination the $105K-plus German electric flagships can't match. The problem is everything around the drivetrain. Rear-seat space is compact-sedan tight (35.4 in of legroom against the BMW i7's 44.4 in), there's no head-up display, no CarPlay, no parking sensors, and the car is projected to keep only about 38% of its value after five years — roughly $53,000 gone. Buy it for the powertrain, the 25 cu ft liftback and the road-trip experience; go elsewhere if you care about back-seat comfort, resale, or the last word in luxury-flagship polish.

Tesla's quoted 0–60 mph time for the volume All-Wheel Drive trim, which is quicker than the base version of every luxury rival scored here — the Audi e-tron GT (3.9 s), BMW i7 xDrive60 (4.5 s), Lucid Air Pure (4.5 s) and EQS 450+ (5.9 s). Only 0.1 s off the top of the sedan band.
Instant, silent, perfectly linear thrust with no lag, no gear steps and no hybrid handoffs, backed by enough reserve that full-throttle merges never feel strained. Sits a notch below the e-tron GT and EQS because motor whine remains audible under hard acceleration and the accelerator/regen tip-in is calibrated more abruptly than the most isolated German luxury EVs.
A single-speed reduction gear on each axle means there is nothing to hunt for, shift through or drone — power delivery is uninterrupted from a stop to a 130–200 mph top speed. 27 kWh/100 mi in a ~4,900 lb full-size luxury sedan is near the top of the EV field — the 0.208 Cd body does most of the work, and the Model S out-efficiencies every other full-size electric sedan in the dataset except the Lucid Air. The June 2025 refresh sold as the 2026 model year gained efficiency from new aero wheel designs rather than any powertrain change.
City is the easy win for any EV — strong regeneration recovers most stop-and-go energy and there is no idle draw. The margin over the highway rating is narrower than on a lighter EV because the car carries a ~100 kWh pack and considerable mass.
The Model S holds efficiency at speed better than almost any EV thanks to its exceptionally low drag coefficient — highway range does not collapse the way a tall electric SUV's does, which is what actually matters on a long drive. Only a 12% drop from city to highway; a tall electric SUV typically loses far more.
410 miles is the longest EPA range Tesla ever certified — up from 402 for 2025, gained through aero wheels and bodywork rather than a bigger pack — and comfortably clears the practical road-trip threshold. It sits below the ceiling only because the Lucid Air's flagship trims define the top of the EV sedan band.
250 kW is quick in absolute terms but is the ceiling of Tesla's 400V architecture and did not move with the refresh — the 800V Lucid, Porsche Taycan and Hyundai/Kia rivals accept 320–350 kW, and the 500 kW V4 Supercharger cabinets are reserved for higher-voltage Tesla platforms the Model S is not on. The Supercharger network's reliability partly offsets the raw-number deficit, but this item measures the rate.
The weakest number in this category and the practical cost of a big pack on a 400V bus: ~67 kWh has to move to cover 10–80%, and Tesla's curve tapers early enough that the session averages ~129 kW. Mid-band here — an 800V rival with a smaller pack does the same job in the low twenties.
About $600 a year to run a full-size luxury sedan — roughly a quarter of what the V8-and-turbo-six competition in this class costs to fuel, and the single largest running-cost advantage the car has. Owners without home charging who lean on Superchargers will pay two to three times this.
No fuel grade to worry about, and still the best public-charging story in the US: the native NACS port plugs straight into the Supercharger network, with routing and battery preconditioning handled by the nav system, and Level 2 home charging covers daily use for pennies. The Model S has held a 5-star NHTSA overall rating since the nameplate's first NCAP test, and the second-generation body as refreshed in 2021 (carried into 2026 with only the mid-2025 cosmetic/NVH update) retains it. The skateboard battery pack puts the center of gravity low enough that rollover risk is the best in the full-size sedan class, and both 2026 trims share one structure so the rating applies lineup-wide.
The current Model S carries no IIHS crashworthiness ratings at all — the institute last evaluated the nameplate on the pre-refresh 2017-18 car, where it managed only Acceptable in small overlap front (driver) and Poor headlights, and took no award. Low-volume full-size luxury sedans routinely go untested, but unlike the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series (both 72 here, untested with no adverse history) the Model S's one IIHS data point is a sub-Good structural result, so it sits below them and just above the Lucid Air (55).
Nothing safety-relevant is trim-gated: Autopilot — Traffic-Aware Cruise Control plus Autosteer lane centering — is standard on both the Model S and the Plaid, alongside AEB, forward collision warning, lane departure avoidance, emergency lane departure avoidance and blind-spot warning. That beats the German habit of bundling ACC into an option pack. Held to 80 rather than the 88-96 the A8, 7 Series and G90 earn because the suite still omits a conventional rear cross-traffic alert with braking and any safe-exit warning, both standard equipment on those rivals.
The AI4/HW4 Model S is one of the few Teslas that pairs the vision stack with a high-definition forward radar rather than running camera-only, which should help exactly the low-visibility and night-pedestrian cases where Tesla Vision has been weakest — and the nameplate rated Superior in IIHS's legacy vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime pedestrian evaluations. Kept below the EQS (88) and A8/7 Series (82) because no current-generation IIHS front crash prevention result exists to confirm the radar's benefit, phantom braking remains a heavily documented owner complaint, and NHTSA has open investigations into Tesla driver-assistance behavior in reduced visibility.
Camera-derived blind-spot warning is standard and displays in the instrument cluster, but it is alert-only — no steering or braking intervention — and the Model S goes without both a conventional rear cross-traffic alert with braking and a safe-exit warning. That is the weakest cross-traffic package in the full-size luxury field, where the G90 (93), 7 Series (90) and A8 (90) all fit intervening systems as standard. Marked a touch under the Model 3 (70), which gained an A-pillar blind-spot indicator and an automatic side-camera feed on turn signal with the Highland update that the Model S body does not share.
Autosteer remains the benchmark for lane centering — it tracks a dead-center line through highway curves without the ping-ponging that afflicts most rivals, and it is standard rather than an option-pack item. Docked from the 90s only for the steering-torque nag and for abrupt disengagements where lane markings degrade.
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control is a full-speed-range system with stop-and-go that resumes cleanly, and folding it and Autosteer into one Autopilot mode is more coherent than the bolt-together highway assists most rivals ship. Kept out of the high 80s the EQS and 7 Series earn because phantom braking — unprompted hard decelerations on divided highways — is a recurring, well-documented Tesla failure mode, and automatic lane changes require paying up for Enhanced Autopilot or FSD.
With FSD (Supervised) fitted, the HW4 Model S allows hands-off operation policed by the cabin-camera driver monitor, and unlike the geofenced Super Cruise and BlueCruise it is not confined to pre-mapped divided highways — it runs surface streets too, the broadest road coverage any consumer system offers. It is the single largest safety-tech advantage the Model S holds over the A8 and G90 (both 15 here, no hands-free option at all). Not higher because it is a costly option rather than standard equipment, it stays supervised with attention nags, and its real-world reliability draws continuing regulatory scrutiny.
One headlight unit is fitted across both trims, so there is no Acceptable-on-the-cheap-trim penalty, and the mid-2025 update brought adaptive driving beam capability to the matrix LED units — genuinely useful hardware. But no IIHS headlight rating exists for the refreshed car, and the only rating the nameplate has ever received was Poor on the 2017 model, so this is an unverified improvement rather than a confirmed one. That lands it well below the A8 (94), 7 Series (92) and EQS (88), whose matrix systems are rated, and below the Model 3's confirmed Good (84).
Forward and three-quarter sightlines are good — a low cowl, slim A-pillars and the fixed glass roof make the cabin airy — but the liftback tail is the problem: a shallow, steeply raked rear window, a high parcel shelf and thick C-pillars leave a large rearward blind zone in a car that is over 16 feet long. Camera compensation is only partial: there is a rear camera, side repeater feeds and, since the mid-2025 update, a front bumper camera, but still no true bird's-eye surround view, which every German rival at this price fits. Sits just under the Model 3 (68) on length and width alone.
The flat floor, wide-opening rear doors and full-size-sedan rear legroom make the Model S one of the easier cars in the class to actually get a seat into, and there is real room to run a rear-facing seat without shoving the front passenger forward. Against that, the lower anchors sit buried in the seat bight and take digging, there is no center LATCH position, and the fast roofline crowds tall rear-facing installations near the glass. Lands mid-pack — a shade under the 7 Series (75) and A8 (74) for the anchor access.

The 2026 Model S is a five-seat liftback in both trims — All-Wheel Drive (Long Range) and Plaid share the same 2+3 layout with a 60/40-split folding rear bench.
38.8 in of front headroom is good for a low-slung fastback sedan — the fixed panoramic glass roof has no sunshade cassette or sunroof mechanism eating into the header — but it trails the taller-cabin flagships (S-Class, 7 Series, EQS) in the full-size luxury set.
42.7 in of front legroom is competitive rather than class-leading: the flat, tunnel-free skateboard floor and long seat travel suit tall drivers, but full-size luxury rivals with conventional packaging publish similar or slightly better numbers.
Rear headroom is the Model S's worst published dimension — the fast rear glass drops sharply over the back seat, and at 35.3 in it sits at the very bottom of the full-size luxury sedan band, with tall rear passengers' heads close to the glass.
The Model S's clearest packaging failure against its price and footprint: 35.4 in of rear legroom is compact-sedan territory, six-plus inches short of the S-Class/7 Series/EQS rear cabins it is cross-shopped against, and the long dash-to-axle plus battery floor leaves rear passengers knees-up.
Cargo is the Model S's strongest space argument — the liftback tailgate, deep underfloor well and fold-flat rear seats give it hatchback-grade utility that no conventional full-size luxury sedan trunk can match, and it tops out the sedan normalization band outright.
A standout for the segment: liftback opening rather than a trunk lid, a deep underfloor sub-trunk, fold-flat 60/40 rear seats, a separate weatherproof frunk, a large twin-bin sliding center console with dual wireless charging pads, and a completely flat floor. The screen-only glovebox release and the absence of any physical latch are the recurring annoyances.
Front seats are supportive and long-haul comfortable with power adjustment, heating and ventilation standard, but they are conventional buckets — no massage function and fewer adjustment axes than the multicontour chairs in an S-Class, i7 or EQS. Rear comfort is capped by the packaging: the bench sits low relative to the battery floor and legroom is short for the class.
Adaptive air suspension is standard on both trims and delivers a composed, well-damped ride with a genuinely soft Comfort setting; the June 2025 refresh added revised bushings and extra suspension isolation that reviewers credited with smoothing the car further. It stays a step short of S-Class/EQS pillowy isolation, and the Plaid's 21-inch wheels reintroduce sharp-edged impact harshness.
Among the quietest cabins in the segment: no engine, acoustic laminated glass all round, and a June 2025 refresh that explicitly targeted noise with additional sound-absorbing material, extra insulation and revised bushings. Coarse-surface tire roar on the Plaid's wider rubber is the remaining intrusion.
Comfort equipment is rich and standard rather than optioned: heat-pump HVAC, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, an 8-inch rear touchscreen for rear climate and media, HEPA filtration with Bioweapon Defense Mode, plus app-based remote preconditioning, Dog Mode, Camp Mode and Cabin Overheat Protection. The entry 2026 Model S is the Long Range AWD at $84,990 before fees, the price set by the June 2025 mid-cycle update that raised both Model S trims by $5,000. With destination the entry point is roughly $86,380 — far above the sedan band ceiling of $55,000, so the item floors at 0.
Long Range AWD is the volume trim by a wide margin — Plaid is a low-volume halo. A typical build adds a premium paint color (~$2,000; only Stealth Grey is no-cost), landing near $88,400 delivered before Full Self-Driving. Still well beyond the $58,000 sedan ceiling, so 0.
The strongest part of the Model S ownership case. There is no scheduled service interval, no oil, no transmission service, and regenerative braking makes pads last far longer than in a rival V8 sedan — routine spend is basically cabin filters, brake fluid, tires and washer fluid. Offsetting that: staggered tires on a 4,800 lb car wear fast and cost $1,200–$1,800 a set, and out-of-warranty failures (air suspension struts, door handles, infotainment computer, 12V/16V systems) carry luxury-tier parts prices with limited independent-shop coverage.
The single worst line in this vehicle's cost picture and the reason the category lands where it does. The Model S has been at or near the bottom of industry 5-year depreciation studies for several cycles, driven by repeated Tesla price cuts that reprice the used fleet overnight, rapid feature obsolescence as newer platforms ship, battery-health uncertainty at high mileage, and softened brand demand through 2025. Starting from an $86,000 base, ~38% retention means roughly $53,000 of value gone in five years — more absolute depreciation than most rivals' entire purchase price.
Tesla's Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty is 4 years or 50,000 miles — mid-pack for the segment, matching most German luxury makes but short of the transferable 5-year coverage from Genesis and the mileage allowance of several rivals.
Model S carries Tesla's longest battery-and-drive-unit coverage — 8 years or 150,000 miles, 50,000 miles more than the Model 3/Y — with an explicit 70% capacity-retention floor. Genuinely reassuring on the one component buyers worry about, and the best-performing warranty item in this category.
Tesla includes no complimentary scheduled maintenance at all — a real gap against Genesis (3 years plus valet service), BMW (3 years/36,000 miles) and Lucid, all of which hand the buyer a prepaid service period. What the Model S does include is roadside assistance for 4 years/50,000 miles, a short Premium Connectivity trial before the ~$10/month subscription, and over-the-air software updates that have added genuine features post-purchase. Free Supercharging has appeared only as an intermittent sales promotion, not a standing entitlement, so it should not be counted on. Roadside-only with no included maintenance places this at the bottom of the 50-79 band.
$88,380 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (38% retained, or about $33,584) leaves about $54,796 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $59,596 in total.

The Model S has drawn below-average-to-average predicted reliability from Consumer Reports for most of the current generation, with complaints concentrated in air suspension, in-car electronics, body hardware and paint/trim rather than the drivetrain. J.D. Power's dependability and initial-quality work places Tesla materially below the industry average over the same span. Bottom of the mixed-signal band, and clearly below the Model 3 (68) that CR has been willing to recommend.
Brand-level judgment, held consistent with the rest of the Tesla lineup: Tesla sits below the industry average in the major multi-year dependability studies, propped up by the Model 3 and Model Y while the low-volume S and X drag the brand down. Not consistently bottom-third, but not mid-pack-or-better either.
The Model S carries the longest campaign history in the Tesla range — a consequence of a generation in production since 2012. Many recent campaigns are OTA-remedied software items shared with the rest of the lineup (Autopilot driver monitoring, rearview-camera delay, warning-light font), but the S also carries a meaningfully larger share of hardware campaigns than the newer cars: MCU/eMMC touchscreen failure, suspension links, seat belts, power-steering assist and hood-latch actions. High count with real hardware content, though nothing pointing at a systemic drivetrain or fire defect.
The strength of the category. The Model S has the longest high-mileage record of any EV sold in the US — large-pack cars routinely past 200-300k miles with degradation in the ~10-15% range — and there is no conventional transmission to fail. Held just short of the Model 3's 84 because the early-generation drive-unit replacement wave (2012-2016) still colors the nameplate's reputation, the NCA pack lacks the cycle durability of the Model 3's LFP option, and the Plaid's tri-motor is a more stressed, lower-volume unit.
The 2021 Palladium cabin — full-width wood dash, 17-inch landscape center screen, rear screen, ventilated seats, 22-speaker audio — plus the 2025 update's added ambient lighting and improved isolation give the Model S a genuinely pleasant, well-equipped interior. But this item is graded relative to price, and at Full-Size Luxury Sedan money the minimalist, screen-dependent cabin reads thin against S-Class, 7 Series, LS and G90 rivals: sparse switchgear, limited material variety, and hard plastics in lower zones.
Fremont builds the Model S on a mature, low-volume line and assembly is better than Tesla's early ramp-era work, but paint, trim-alignment and rattle complaints persist into the current cars and Tesla's initial-quality scores remain below the industry average — a heavier penalty at this price than it would be on a mainstream car.
Adequate coverage with a genuinely differentiated mobile-service fleet and app-based scheduling that resolve many jobs without a shop visit. Offset by a company-owned network far sparser than any franchised luxury brand outside major metros, and well-documented waits for service appointments and especially collision/body work — a poor match for a six-figure flagship whose buyers are cross-shopping franchised luxury service.
The weakest item in the category and worse than the Model 3's picture. Low production volume means thinner parts stocking and a small aftermarket; collision parts run through Tesla-controlled distribution with documented backorders; and the S adds expensive failure-prone hardware the Model 3 does not have — air suspension, the large pack, and structural design that makes significant damage costly. Partly offset by minimal routine maintenance (no oil service, regen-extended brake life).

The refreshed Model S carries a 17-in landscape center touchscreen standard on both trims — there is no smaller base head unit and no larger option — and it is one of the largest screens in any sedan, clearing the top of the segment normalization band (7–15.5 in). Replaces the 11.2-in placeholder, which was far below the real hardware.
Raw software quality is a real strength — among the fastest and slickest systems at any price, with crisp mapping, instant app switching, streaming, gaming and a browser, and menu logic more coherent than most German equivalents. It stays out of the top band because of total touch dependence: no stalk for gear selection (screen swipe with headliner backup buttons), turn signals on steering-wheel buttons, and climate, mirrors and wipers all buried in the screen — the recurring criticism in every road test of this car.
Tesla does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in any form, wired or wireless, on the Model S — a deliberate product decision rather than a trim gap, which puts it in the framework's bottom band. Native Spotify, Apple Music, Bluetooth audio and phone-contact integration soften the practical impact, so it is not scored at zero. Confidence is LOW because CarPlay support was publicly reported as under development during 2025 and could have shipped for 2026 — this is the first item to re-verify when live sources are available.
Native navigation is the class benchmark for an EV: the trip planner inserts Supercharger stops automatically, shows live stall availability and wait times, preconditions the battery ahead of arrival and re-plans on the fly — capabilities phone projection structurally cannot replicate, which matters more here than in most cars because there is no CarPlay to fall back on. Voice control historically handled command phrases rather than conversation, but a conversational assistant rolled out during 2025 closed much of that gap.
The 22-speaker, 960-watt system with active road-noise reduction is standard on both trims — no upgrade to buy, no trim gap — and is routinely rated with the best branded systems in the segment despite wearing no audio-house badge, helped by an exceptionally quiet cabin that the 2025 update made quieter still with added acoustic glass and sound deadening. It sits just below the very top only because rivals such as the S-Class and i7 offer higher-tier branded systems with more elaborate surround processing.
Unlike the Model 3 and Model Y, the Model S keeps a proper 12.3-in full-digital driver display in the binnacle, standard on both trims, showing speed, gear, range and driver-assist visualizations directly in the line of sight. It is crisp and clean but comparatively fixed — Tesla exposes little user configuration versus the multi-layout clusters from BMW, Mercedes and Audi — which keeps it short of the very top of the band.
Tesla defines the top of this item and every rival is measured against it. Updates arrive over the air on a roughly monthly cadence, reach effectively every controller in the car rather than just infotainment and maps, and have repeatedly added real capability after purchase — driver-assist behavior, charging logic, power and range improvements, new apps and whole UI revisions — with no dealer involvement.
The Tesla app is the reference implementation: phone-as-key is the primary way into the car rather than an add-on, and the app covers remote climate and cabin preconditioning, charge start/stop, charge-limit and scheduling, lock/unlock, locate, live Sentry and dashcam viewing, Summon and service booking — all with no subscription. Only streaming media, live traffic and satellite maps sit behind the Premium Connectivity fee, and none of those are core remote functions.
Provision is good rather than lavish: two wireless charging pads in the front console — an advantage over rivals that fit one — plus fast USB-C ports front and rear, and a rear screen that drives its own media. It falls short of the top band because there is no 120V household outlet anywhere in the car, something segment rivals and Tesla's own Cybertruck offer, and total port count is modest for a full-size luxury sedan.
Among the most seamless keyless setups sold: the phone is the key by default with shareable digital access, a key card and a key fob are supplied as backup, the door handles auto-present as you approach, and the car locks itself as you walk away. There is no start button at all — sit down, select a gear and go — and both the power liftgate and the frunk open from the app or the screen.
This is the weakest technology area on the car. Tesla deleted ultrasonic parking sensors fleet-wide in 2022 and replaced them with camera-derived Tesla Vision distance estimation, which reviewers and owners have repeatedly found less precise at low speed than the sensor-based systems every luxury rival still fits; the front bumper camera added in the 2025 update improved forward visibility but does not restore true proximity sensing. Autopark and Smart Summon work well when they engage. Confidence is LOW because this capability is delivered in software and can shift materially between releases.
No head-up display is offered on the Model S at any trim or as any option, a conspicuous omission in a full-size luxury sedan where rivals fit large augmented-reality units — the i7, EQS, S-Class and Lucid Air all offer one.
