The verdict
A mixed-report compact luxury sedan, strong on safety and held back by ownership.
The 2024 Audi A4 is the second-to-last year of a nameplate Audi had already announced it was retiring, and it shows: a beautifully built, genuinely quiet compact luxury sedan with standard quattro AWD at $42,295 — a couple thousand under a comparably equipped BMW 330i xDrive — wrapped around a 2016-vintage interior architecture and a 201-hp engine that needs 6.3 seconds to reach 60 mph. It earns 5 NHTSA stars, Good in every IIHS crash test it took, and one of the best cabins in the class, and 2024 was the year Audi finally made adaptive cruise and lane assist standard on the base trim. What holds it back is running cost and packaging: premium fuel required ($2,550/yr per the EPA), a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty with no separate powertrain term, 35.7 inches of rear legroom, and a 12.0 cu ft trunk a 3 Series beats by five cubic feet. Buy it as a well-negotiated two-person luxury commuter, not as a family car or a long-term keeper.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the A4's weakest categories.1.22D
2024 is a carry-over year for the B9 A4 (final US model year of the generation before the nameplate moved to A5). The volume US configuration is the 40 TFSI quattro — a 2.0L turbo four with 12V mild hybrid rated at 201 hp @ 5,000 rpm; the S line 45 TFSI raises that to 261 hp. Modest output for a compact luxury sedan and well behind rivals' base engines.
236 lb-ft from the 40 TFSI's 2.0L turbo, delivered on a broad low-rpm plateau, which makes the car feel stronger in traffic than its horsepower figure implies.
Audi's US estimate for the volume 40 TFSI quattro is 6.3 seconds — mid-pack for a compact luxury sedan. The optional 45 TFSI is substantially quicker, with instrumented tests of the same powertrain at 4.8 s (Car and Driver) and 5.2 s (MotorTrend).
The 2.0T with 12V mild hybrid is quiet and smooth in normal driving — reviewers consistently describe the A4 as going about its business smoothly and hushed — but there is measurable off-idle turbo lag before boost arrives and the four-cylinder gets coarse near redline. Good rather than class-leading against the BMW 330i's B48 and the Genesis/Mercedes turbo fours.
The seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch shifts quickly and crisply once moving and settles quietly in top gear, but low-speed manners are its weak point: reviewers and owners report delayed take-up and abrupt engagement when creeping or parking, a known trait of the wet-clutch DCT. Behind the BMW 3 Series' ZF eight-speed torque-converter automatic.
quattro all-wheel drive is standard on every 2024 US A4 — no FWD variant is offered — using the ultra part-time-decoupling system on the 40 TFSI and a mechanical center differential with torque vectoring on the 45 TFSI. Sophisticated for on-road use; short of 100 only because there is no low range or terrain-mode hardware, which this segment does not offer anyway.
Two states of tune of one engine — the 2.0L turbo four as 40 TFSI (201 hp) or 45 TFSI (261 hp), both with a 12V mild hybrid and the same DCT/quattro pairing. No hybrid, plug-in or electric option in the A4 sedan line; the S4's V6 and the e-tron models are separate nameplates, and the diesel/Avant variants are not sold in the US.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the A4's weakest categories.0.85F
The volume 40 TFSI quattro rates 30 MPG combined — respectable for a standard-AWD turbo four and the best figure in the 2024 A4 range, though ordering the S line 45 TFSI drops it to 27.
26 MPG city is solid for standard quattro AWD, helped by the 12V mild hybrid's stop-start and coasting functions, but a full hybrid rival in this class clears it by a wide margin.
35 MPG highway is the A4's strongest efficiency figure — the tall top gear of the seven-speed DCT and quattro ultra's ability to decouple the rear axle pay off at a steady cruise.
EPA total range of 459 miles from the 15.3-gallon tank — mid-pack for the segment, where the modest tank rather than the engine is the limiting factor.
$2,550 a year at EPA assumptions. The economy figures are decent, but the premium-fuel requirement puts the running cost well above a mainstream sedan's — EPA flags $1,750 more in fuel over five years than the average new vehicle.
Premium unleaded is required across every 2024 A4 drivetrain, with no lower-grade or flex-fuel option and no plug — a fixed cost premium of roughly 60–80 cents a gallon over regular that lands this squarely in the item's bottom band. Typical of the compact luxury segment, but the item grades the requirement itself, not the peer group.
3SafetyThe A4's best-graded category.3.05B
NHTSA tested the 2024 A4 4-door AWD directly and awarded 5 stars overall; the frontal result is the weak spot at 4 stars for both driver and passenger, while side barrier, side pole and rollover all earned 5.
Every IIHS crash test the B9 A4 has taken came back Good — driver- and passenger-side small overlap front and the original moderate overlap front — but it earned no 2024 Top Safety Pick, because the aging platform was never run through the updated moderate overlap (rear-passenger) or updated side tests that the award now requires.
2024 is the year Audi made adaptive cruise control and Audi active lane assist standard on every A4, alongside pre sense AEB, lane-departure warning, front and rear parking sensors and automatic high beams — so the base Premium is no longer missing ACC. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are still the gap, bundled into the $1,400 Convenience package on Premium.
Pre sense city earns IIHS Superior for daytime pedestrian front crash prevention with a clean sheet — collision avoided in both crossing-child and crossing-adult runs at 12 and 25 mph. It falls short of the top band only because the nighttime pedestrian and updated vehicle-to-vehicle evaluations were never run on this generation.
Audi side assist is alert-only — a mirror-mounted LED, no steering or braking intervention — and it is the one core item still optional on the volume Premium trim, costing $1,400 as part of the Convenience package. It becomes standard from Premium Plus up and brings pre sense rear with it.
Audi active lane assist became standard for 2024 and IIHS credits the A4 with standard lane departure warning and prevention, but reviewers rate the tuning mid-pack rather than class-leading. Full lane centering only arrives with Adaptive Cruise Assist further up the option sheet.
Full-speed-range stop-and-go adaptive cruise is standard on every 2024 A4, and Adaptive Cruise Assist layers lane centering plus predictive efficiency assist that reads navigation and sign data to anticipate curves and speed limits — a polished, well-reviewed hands-on system. Held below the top band because the integrated centering half is not standard on the volume trim.
There is no hands-free highway driving option on the 2024 A4 — no analogue to GM Super Cruise, Ford BlueCruise or Tesla FSD Supervised. Audi went the other direction for 2024 by adding a hands-on-detection sensor to the standard heated steering wheel, which is explicitly a hands-on system.
The volume Premium and Premium Plus trims rate only Acceptable — LED projector low beams with cheaper LED reflector high beams that IIHS found inadequate on the straightaway left side. Good-rated lighting is reserved for Prestige, so the trim most buyers take is the weaker one; automatic high-beam assist is at least standard across the range.
Typical compact luxury sedan sightlines — a low cowl and reasonably slim A-pillars up front, offset by a rising beltline and thick C-pillars that pinch the over-shoulder view. Camera compensation improved for 2024 with front and rear parking sensors now standard, though the top-view 360° camera still waits until Premium Plus.
The hardware itself is genuinely easy — IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Good, with visible lower anchors requiring zero pounds of attachment force and clear tether labels in all three positions. What holds the score back is space, not hardware: only the two outboard positions have complete LATCH, and a compact sedan's rear legroom makes a rear-facing infant seat behind a tall driver tight.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.25C
Conventional five-seat compact luxury sedan layout across all 2024 A4 configurations — no 4-seat or bench-front variants. 2024 is the final US model year of the B9 generation and carries the same body as 2017–2023.
38.9 inches is the Audi-published front headroom figure carried unchanged through the B9 generation, and it is generous for a compact luxury sedan with a low roofline. A sunroof is standard on every US A4, so the practical figure sits nearer the ~37 in that cars.com lists.
41.3 inches is adequate rather than roomy — the A4's driving position is set low and close, and the figure trails mid-size sedans by two to three inches. Tall drivers fit, but the front footwell is snug next to the wider-bodied rivals a shopper cross-shops.
37.4 inches of second-row headroom is mid-pack for a compact sedan — six-footers clear the headliner but the tapering roof means the outboard seats feel tighter than the number suggests.
35.7 inches is the A4's clearest packaging weakness and is called out in nearly every review — adults fit behind average-height front occupants but not behind a tall driver, and it is roughly two inches down on a BMW 3 Series.
12.0 cubic feet is small for the class — a 3 Series carries 17 and a C-Class 12.6 — and the trunk opening is narrow, so a full-size stroller plus a weekend's luggage is a genuine squeeze. The split-folding rear seatback is the saving grace for long items.
Everyday storage is tidy but tight and offers nothing inventive: a shallow center console bin (which doubles as the wireless charging cradle on Premium Plus and up), modest door pockets, a small covered cubby ahead of the shifter and a glovebox reduced by the fuse panel. No underfloor tray, no fold-flat surfaces, no onboard AC power.
Front seats are a strength — genuine leather and heating are standard even on the base Premium, with 8-way power and 4-way lumbar for the driver, and reviewers consistently describe them as firm in the German idiom yet comfortable over a full day. The rear bench is the limiter: well-shaped but short on legroom, and the fixed thigh cushion is shallow for taller passengers.
The standard suspension on the volume 40 TFSI strikes an unusually good balance for an Audi — reviewers call it supple and controlled over broken pavement without float, and Consumer Reports credits it with masking long-distance miles. The S line's sport suspension and larger wheels give up some of that compliance.
A hushed cabin is one of the A4's most-praised traits: little wind noise from the flush glazing and a 2.0T that stays distant at a cruise. It falls short of the top band because acoustically-insulated front side windows are reserved for the Prestige trim, so the volume car admits a bit more road roar on coarse surfaces.
Standard content is strong for the class — three-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel on every trim, plus app-based remote start and pre-conditioning through Audi connect. Ventilated front seats and heated rear seats are Prestige-only, which keeps it out of the top band.
5Cost of OwnershipThe A4's lowest-graded category.0.45F
The entry 2024 A4 is the 40 TFSI Premium quattro (201 hp), and every A4 includes quattro AWD and the 7-speed dual-clutch as standard — so the base price buys AWD that BMW and Mercedes still charge extra for. It undercuts a 2024 330i and C 300 by roughly $2–3k delivered.
Premium Plus is the volume A4 trim, and most buyers take it either as the 40 TFSI ($46,495 delivered) or with the 261-hp 45 TFSI, which in 2024 was only sold in S line form ($48,095). Adding the commonly-chosen S line interior ($500) or Black Optic Plus ($1,300) packs puts real transaction prices right around $48,300 — about $4k under a comparably equipped 2024 330i xDrive.
Sources bracket this widely: Edmunds True Cost to Own puts scheduled maintenance alone near $6,925 for five years and adds repairs on top, while CarEdge — which credits the 4-year factory warranty for absorbing most of the early bills — models only about $3,049. $8,000 sits inside that bracket and in line with how the German compact-luxury peers are scored here (2024 BMW 3 Series $7,800, 2026 A4 $8,400): premium-fuel turbo four, quattro hardware, and dealer-only service intervals.
Nameplate depreciation studies land between roughly 51% and 54% retained, but those averages are lifted by the inflated 2021–2023 used market, and ALG/KBB-style residuals for the compact luxury sedan class sit in the mid-to-high 40s. 48% is the honest convergence and matches how the 2024 BMW 3 Series and Volvo S60 are scored here; the announced end of the A4 nameplate is a mild drag on later-life values.
The standard Audi New Vehicle Limited Warranty — mid-pack for luxury, matching BMW and Mercedes at 4/50 but a year and 10,000 miles behind Genesis and Jaguar. Corrosion perforation coverage runs 12 years, unlimited mileage.
Audi does not publish a longer powertrain term; engine, transmission and drivetrain are covered by the same 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty. That is below the bottom of the 5–10 year band this item normalizes against and far short of the 10-year powertrain coverage from Hyundai, Kia and Genesis.
No complimentary scheduled maintenance at all — Audi Care is a prepaid plan (running to 5 years/57,000 miles) bought on top of the car. What is included is 4 years of Audi 24-Hour Roadside Assistance for the warranty period plus an Audi connect services trial. That trails the included-maintenance programs at Genesis, Volvo and Jaguar, and leaves an A4 owner paying for the first service.
$48,300 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (48% retained, or about $23,184) leaves about $25,116 in depreciation. Add the projected $8,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $33,116 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the A4's strongest categories.3.04B
Model-specific and brand-level signals genuinely disagree, and the model-specific ones are favorable: Consumer Reports rates the 2024 A4 as more reliable than the average new car of its model year and ranks it among its highest-scoring sports sedans, and RepairPal has the nameplate needing unscheduled shop visits less often than the luxury-midsize average. 2024 is a carry-over year deep into the B9's run (eighth model year of the generation, fifth of the B9.5 facelift), so teething problems are long since resolved, and the year carries no NHTSA recalls at all. Held below 80 by Audi's poor 2024 J.D. Power dependability and initial-quality numbers, which are the brand baseline this car inherits.
Audi's standing in the dependability studies of this era is poor and getting worse — 275 PP100 in the 2024 VDS against a 190-PP100 industry average is near the bottom of the industry and a regression from its own 252 in 2023, and the 2024 Initial Quality Study puts Audi ahead of only Dodge. Consumer Reports is the dissenting voice, placing Audi inside its 2024 top ten before dropping it to 13th the following year. Scored as a weak mid-pack brand rather than bottom-third on the strength of that CR result and Audi's better showing on model-specific data.
The 2024 A4 has a clean recall record — NHTSA's database returns zero campaigns for the model year, two years after it went on sale, and the same is true of the 2025 car. Earlier B9.5 years took a handful of small, contained campaigns (tires, rear axle, seats, seat-belt retractor, rearview-camera display, engine control module, infotainment screen) with nothing systemic and nothing fire- or crash-critical. Notably, the 48-volt belt-starter-generator defect that produced a 169,000-vehicle class-action settlement and service campaign 27BQ does NOT cover the A4: the settlement class is the V6/V8 cars (2019-23 A6/A7/A8/Q8, 2020-23 Q7/RSQ8/S6/S7/S8/A6 allroad, 2021-23 RS6/RS7), and the A4's 2.0T uses a simpler 12-volt BSG. Short of the 90s only because recurring DL382 transmission service themes keep the TSB record from being spotless and a two-year-old model year can still accumulate campaigns.
The EA888 evo4 2.0T is the strongest part of the package — a fourth-generation refinement of a family in continuous production since 2008, with the early generations' oil-consumption and timing-chain failure modes engineered out. What keeps this out of the 80s is everything bolted to it: the DL382 seven-speed wet-clutch S tronic has a well-documented mechatronic-unit failure mode (no-drive, limp mode, blown main fuse) plus a common first-to-second shift jerk, and the 12-volt belt starter generator on the mild-hybrid four is a recognized failure item that throws a drive-system malfunction and can strand the car. Neither is a fleet-wide defect, but both are expensive after the 4-year/50,000-mile warranty lapses.
The A4 cabin is a segment benchmark and remained one through its final years: genuine leather and heated front seats are standard even on the base 40 TFSI Premium, soft-touch coverage extends through the high-touch zones, switchgear is solidly damped, and the wood or aluminum inlays read as real material rather than trim. Reviewers place it at or above the BMW 3 Series and ahead of the C-Class on perceived richness, with only the Genesis G70 and Volvo S60 as serious rivals at the price.
Physical assembly is excellent — reviewers describe panel gaps, switch action and cabin damping on the Ingolstadt/Neckarsulm-built A4 as exemplary, with few rattle complaints on a design this far into its production run. The score is pulled down by the initial-quality half of what this item measures: Audi's 2024 IQS result is one of the worst in the industry, and while much of that penalty is infotainment and connected-services friction rather than build defects, it is still owner-reported problems in the first 90 days and cannot be discounted entirely. That puts the 2024 A4 below the 2024 3 Series, whose brand sat near the industry average.
Roughly 314 franchised US Audi dealers give solid coverage of metro and suburban markets but a visibly thinner footprint than BMW (~340) or Mercedes-Benz (~380), with real gaps in rural and interior states where an A4 owner may face a long drive for warranty work on a dealer-only diagnostic system. Service satisfaction is mid-pack for a luxury brand — neither a differentiator nor a liability.
Better than the Audi brand average but still a costly car to keep. The A4 specifically posts a $739 average annual repair cost — which RepairPal classes as normal ownership cost and which slightly undercuts the BMW 3 Series — helped by broad VW Group commonality on wear items and a healthy B9 enthusiast aftermarket. Working against it: premium fuel, dealer-only diagnostics and specialty tooling, European parts pricing on brand-specific electronics and drivetrain modules, and the fact that the expensive failures on this powertrain (DCT mechatronic, belt starter generator) land after the short 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. Nowhere near the cheap-and-abundant top band.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.63C+
The B9's 10.1-inch MMI touch response display is standard across the range and is also the maximum available — there is no upgrade path. Crisp and well-integrated, but small next to the 12–15 inch panels rivals fitted by 2024.
MMI touch response is quick, logically organized and backed by haptic click feedback, and Audi kept a separate physical climate panel below the screen rather than burying temperature in menus — reviewers repeatedly rate it among the easier luxury systems to learn. Held out of the top band by the small display and by the loss of the old rotary controller, which made on-the-move inputs easier.
Smartphone projection is standard on every 2024 A4, with wireless Apple CarPlay across the range; sources disagree on whether Android Auto is wireless or wired on the base Premium, so this sits just below a clean top-band score. Two USB-C ports handle wired fallback.
Audi's natural-language voice assistant handles destination, phone and climate requests conversationally and is better than average for 2024, but MMI navigation plus is not standard on the volume trims — factory nav (with the Audi connect NAV data trial) arrives with the Navigation package or standard only at Prestige, so most A4 buyers navigate through CarPlay.
The base 10-speaker system is clean if unremarkable, and the optional Bang & Olufsen 3D setup — 19 speakers on a 755-watt, 16-channel amplifier, standard at Prestige — is one of the better premium systems in the compact luxury class. Points come off because the good system is an upcharge or a top-trim item.
Every 2024 A4 has a fully digital gauge display, and the volume Premium Plus upgrades to the 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus — still one of the sharpest and most configurable clusters on sale, with the full-screen map view competitors have spent years copying. Only the base Premium's smaller panel keeps it from a higher score.
The B9 A4's MIB3 head unit handles over-the-air map and connected-services data updates through Audi connect, but there is no whole-vehicle OTA — control-module and feature updates require a dealer visit, and Audi shipped no feature-adding software drops to A4 owners during 2024. That is squarely the infotainment-only band.
myAudi with Audi connect CARE covers the core set — remote lock/unlock, remote engine start, vehicle status, stolen-vehicle locator and emergency call — and CARE is complimentary rather than subscription-gated. It falls mid-band because there is no phone-as-key on the A4 and the app itself has a long-standing reputation for sluggish refreshes and login trouble.
Two front USB-C ports are standard, and the volume Premium Plus adds the Audi phone box wireless charger plus second-row USB-C outlets — a solid everyday set. Nothing beyond it: no household AC outlet, no high-wattage USB, and base Premium buyers get neither wireless charging nor rear ports.
Push-button start is standard, and Audi advanced key proximity entry comes with the Convenience package content that is standard from Premium Plus up — so the volume trim has full keyless convenience, but the entry Premium must pay for it. Remote start is app-only and there is no digital/phone key on this platform.
Strong for 2024: front and rear parking sensors plus a rear camera are standard on every trim, and the volume Premium Plus makes the surround-view camera standard rather than optional. Park assist semi-automated parking is reserved for Prestige, and image resolution is good rather than best-in-class.
A head-up display exists but only as standard equipment on the top Prestige trim — it cannot be added to the Premium or the volume Premium Plus, so the buyer of the car most people actually order has no path to it. Clear mid-band "top trims only" placement.
8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.39D
The hardware is easy — IIHS rates the A4's LATCH ease of use Good, with visible lower anchors and clear tether labels — but the packaging is not: 35.7 inches of rear legroom leaves little room to fit a rear-facing seat behind a tall driver, only the two outboard positions have lower anchors, and a 12.0 cu ft trunk swallows one full-size stroller and not much else.
The credentials are good and, for 2024, reach the trims families buy: NHTSA awarded the A4 5 stars overall, IIHS returned Good in every crash test it ran, and Audi made adaptive cruise, active lane assist, pre sense AEB and front/rear parking sensors standard on every trim. Two gaps hold it below the top band — blind-spot monitoring is a $1,400 option on the base Premium, and Good-rated headlights are Prestige-only.
Four adults travel in quiet, well-damped comfort with three-zone climate reaching the back seat, and the ride is explicitly praised for keeping fatigue at bay. What limits it is capacity and rear amenities: the second row is tight for teenagers on a long haul, heated rear seats are Prestige-only, there is no rear entertainment or rear USB below Premium Plus, and luggage for four does not fit in a 12 cu ft trunk without folding a seatback.
A relaxed commuter in most respects — quiet cabin, compliant ride, standard full-speed adaptive cruise with stop-and-go, light controls and excellent forward ergonomics. The one persistent annoyance is the seven-speed S tronic's low-speed manners: reviewers and owners report delayed take-up and abrupt engagement when creeping in traffic or parking.
30 MPG combined is respectable for a standard-AWD turbo four, but every 2024 A4 requires premium unleaded, which puts EPA's annual fuel bill at about $2,550 — roughly $1,750 more than the average new vehicle over five years — and Audi consumables and service intervals are luxury-priced. Average-to-below-average cost per commuting mile.
A compact 188-inch footprint and a 38.1-foot turning circle make the A4 easy to place in a city, and 2024 made front and rear parking sensors standard with a surround-view camera on the volume Premium Plus. The rising beltline and thick C-pillars pinch the over-shoulder view, and the DCT's hesitant creep makes tight three-point maneuvers less relaxed than they should be.
Audi publishes no US tow rating for the A4 sedan, there is no factory hitch, and the 12 cu ft trunk with a narrow aperture rules out most jobsite loads. A compact luxury sedan is not a work vehicle in any meaningful sense — the split-folding rear seat is the entire extent of its cargo flexibility.
The EA888 evo4 2.0T is a well-proven engine, but everything around it is luxury-oriented and expensive to abuse: leather upholstery with no wear-friendly alternative, low-profile tires on 18-inch wheels, ~4.9 inches of ground clearance, and Audi's poor showing in the 2024 J.D. Power VDS (275 PP100 against a 190 industry average). No fleet or trade presence.
Effectively nothing: no onboard AC power, no bed or open cargo area, no tie-down system beyond trunk hooks, no factory roof rails or hitch on the sedan, and no upfitter ecosystem. Carpeted trunk and leather cabin are the opposite of washable.
This is the A4's best use case. The cabin is hushed, the ride is explicitly credited with keeping fatigue at bay, the front seats hold up over a full day, and standard adaptive cruise with lane assist takes the edge off interstate stints. Range is the ceiling: a 15.3-gallon tank gives about 459 miles combined — adequate but not a long-haul advantage — and the rear seat is not where you want to spend eight hours.
Standard quattro all-wheel drive is a genuine asset on gravel, snow-covered forest roads and boat ramps, and it comes on every trim rather than as an upcharge. Everything else is against it — roughly 4.9 inches of ground clearance, low-profile tires, no roof rails or crossbar provision on the sedan, no tow rating for bikes or a small trailer, and no 110V outlet for camping. The A4 allroad exists precisely because the sedan cannot do this job.
A 40/20/40 split-folding rear seatback with a center pass-through handles skis and long boxes better than the raw 12.0 cu ft figure implies, but that figure is still near the bottom of the class, the trunk opening is narrow, there is no underfloor storage beyond the spare well, and neither roof rails nor a hitch is offered — so anything bulky has nowhere to go.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the A4's strongest categories.2.65C+
Standard quattro and a well-sorted chassis give the A4 secure, composed cornering with good body control, and Consumer Reports goes as far as calling it tossable on road and track. It stops short of the class benchmark because reviewers agree it is competent rather than engaging — the nose-heavy layout and safety-first tuning keep it behind a 3 Series or G70 for the driver who wants to be involved.
The A4's clearest dynamic weakness. Accuracy and weighting are fine — it tracks straight and turns in precisely — but Edmunds singles out the steering as a letdown for telling the driver nothing about road surface or available grip. Precise but numb, squarely the middle band.
Brakes are a strong point: a firm, progressive pedal with no mild-hybrid regen blending awkwardness (the 12V system does not alter pedal feel), and instrumented stops in the 111-foot range from 60 mph for the B9 A4 put it comfortably inside class norms. Fade resistance is untested at length on the base 40 TFSI's smaller rotors.
Once rolling, the 2.0T with its 12V mild hybrid is smooth and hushed, with restarts from stop-start that are barely noticeable and — per Consumer Reports — a dual-clutch free of the low-speed vibration the type is known for. Against that, Edmunds and owners report delayed throttle and transmission responses off idle and abrupt engagement while creeping, which is what keeps this out of the 80s.
The 2.0T stays distant and inoffensive at a cruise and is well isolated through the controls, contributing to the A4's reputation for a quiet cabin. It loses points for character rather than volume: the four-cylinder turns coarse and thrashy near redline, and there is nothing to enjoy in the sound when you use the revs.
38.1 feet is a wide circle for a 188-inch compact sedan — a consequence of the longitudinal engine layout pushing the front axle rearward and limiting steering lock. It costs the A4 real maneuverability in parking structures and U-turns relative to transverse-engine rivals.
One of the A4's genuine strengths — a wide range of seat and tilt/telescoping wheel adjustment, a low cowl with clear forward sightlines, logically grouped controls and, crucially for 2024, a separate physical climate panel rather than touchscreen-buried temperature. Ingress and egress are easy for a low sedan.
In volume 40 TFSI form the A4 is polished and satisfying but not something enthusiasts seek out: 201 hp and a 6.3-second 0–60 give it no urgency, the steering withholds feedback, and the character is quiet competence. Buyers who want the entertaining version of this chassis go to the 261-hp 45 TFSI S line or the S4.

The 2024 base 40 TFSI Premium is well stocked for the class: quattro AWD and the 7-speed dual-clutch are standard on every A4, along with LED headlights, a 10.1-inch MMI touchscreen with wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, leather seating, sunroof and tri-zone climate — and for 2024 Audi made adaptive cruise, lane-keeping assist and front/rear parking sensors standard at base, which had been extra before. Virtual Cockpit Plus, Bang & Olufsen audio and the panoramic-style upgrades still require Premium Plus or Prestige, and Genesis and Volvo bundle more at the entry price.
At $42,295 delivered with standard AWD, the 2024 A4 undercuts a 330i xDrive and C 300 4MATIC by a couple of thousand dollars for comparable content, which is the strongest value case the B9 ever made. Against that, the 261-hp 45 TFSI is locked behind the S line trims, option packs escalate quickly to a $52k Prestige, and Genesis G70 and Cadillac CT4 still deliver more equipment per dollar. Fair value rather than a bargain.
Six sedan configurations for 2024 — Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige each available with the 201-hp 40 TFSI or the 261-hp 45 TFSI S line — plus the 349-hp S4 in three trims and the A4 allroad wagon on the same platform. Wide, well-spaced coverage from $42k to $62k; the gap is powertrain variety, since the US A4 was gas-only with no hybrid or EV option the way BMW's 3 Series family offered.
2024 was the collapse year for the nameplate: about 7,036 US deliveries, roughly half of 2023's 13,369 and barely a quarter of the 26,435 sold in 2019. The Mercedes C-Class moved 35,590 units in the same year and the 3 Series outsold both, so the A4 finished 2024 a distant third in its own segment while Audi buyers migrated to the Q5.
Audi holds strong premium equity in the US — design-led, tech-forward, with quattro as a genuine brand asset — and sits comfortably in the aspirational tier even if a step behind BMW and Mercedes on outright cachet in this segment. The halo helps the A4's residuals and showroom traffic more than its own sales numbers would suggest.
A slow-selling sedan in its final generation is a buyer's advantage: Audi ran recurring cash and lease-cash programs on the 2024 A4 (Summer Celebration cash on sedans, $2,000-class lease cash in dealer programs) on top of subvented Audi Financial lease specials, and the cars negotiated well off sticker. Meaningful money without the desperation pricing that signals a broken product — the 3 Series held MSRP far more firmly.
2024 is the eighth model year of the B9 generation launched for 2017, four years past its 2020 facelift, and its replacement was already public: Audi confirmed in March 2023 that the A4 would be renamed A5 on a new platform, with the last US A4 sold as a 2025. A buyer in 2024 was buying a nameplate with a known expiry date and a 2016-vintage MMI/interior architecture.
Solidly reviewed without ever winning the class: KBB rates it 4.3/5 and ranks it #5 among 2024 luxury compact cars, Edmunds scored it 7.9/10 after road and track testing, and US News calls its critics' rating good for the class. Reviewers consistently praise the cabin quality, quattro traction and refinement while flagging a small trunk, modest base power and a character deficit against the 3 Series — no 10Best, NACTOY or comparison-test win for 2024.
