The verdict
A mixed-report compact luxury sedan, strong on driving and held back by efficiency.
The 2018 3 Series is the last year of the F30 generation. It is still a genuinely good-driving rear-drive sport sedan, with a punchy 248-hp turbo four, a superb 8-speed automatic, and solid late-cycle build quality. The catch is everything bolted around the drive: premium fuel at about $3,050 a year, driver-assist and comfort features that were all extra-cost options, Poor-rated standard headlights, and a small 6.5-inch base screen. As a used buy it rewards someone who values the steering wheel more than the screen, and who budgets for BMW-level running costs.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Still a driver's sedan
- Quick, well-matched powertrain
- Sorted final-year build quality
What holds it back
- Thirsty on premium fuel
- Driver aids were all optional
- Weak headlights and awkward car-seat anchors

Source: NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation recall database, model years 2017–2026. Recalls are listed by model year as the manufacturer filed them; whether a specific car is affected depends on its VIN — check a VIN at nhtsa.gov ↗. NHTSA model names matched to this page: 3 SERIES, 328D, 330E, 330E IPERFORMANCE, 330I, 330I XDRIVE, 340I, 340XI, M340I, M340XI.
Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.02C
The 330i is the volume trim of the 2018 F30 (LCI) 3 Series sedan, a carry-over year before the G20 arrived for 2019. The 340i's 3.0L turbo six tops the lineup at 320 hp.
Peak torque of the 330i's 2.0L turbo four, available from low rpm.
BMW quoted 5.5 s for the RWD 330i automatic; xDrive figures of 5.3–5.5 s are reported, quick for the class's base-engine volume trims.
The B46/B48 2.0L turbo is strong and responsive with little lag, but reviewers noted a somewhat gruff, buzzy four-cylinder note and a noticeable start-stop shudder versus the silky 340i six.
The ZF 8-speed automatic delivers quick, smooth, well-judged shifts; a 6-speed manual remained available on the 330i, a rarity in the segment.
xDrive AWD was available on the 320i, 330i and 340i (the 330e was RWD-only); widely offered and a popular choice, but a basic rear-biased system without torque-vectoring modes.
For 2018 the sedan offered a 180-hp 320i, the 248-hp 330i, the 330e plug-in hybrid and the 320-hp 340i six, with manual and AWD options — broad for the class, including an electrified option.
2Efficiency & RangeThe 3 Series's lowest-graded category.0.02F
EPA rating for the 2018 F30 330i sedan, 2.0L turbo I4 with 8-speed automatic. The xDrive version matches at 27 combined.
EPA city rating for the volume 330i RWD automatic.
EPA highway rating for the volume 330i RWD automatic.
Computed from the F30 sedan's 15.8-gallon fuel tank and the EPA 27 MPG combined rating.
EPA annual fuel cost at 15,000 mi/yr and current premium fuel prices; premium requirement inflates it.
The 330i's 2.0L turbo requires premium unleaded, raising running costs versus regular-fuel rivals; the plug-in 330e was a separate configuration not scored here.
3SafetyGrades below the middle of the scale.1.52D
NHTSA rated the 2018 F30 3 Series sedan 5 stars overall in both RWD and AWD form. The 4-star frontal crash result is its one weaker sub-score.
Good in every crash test IIHS ran (driver-side small overlap, moderate overlap, side, roof strength, head restraints). The 2018 Top Safety Pick (not TSP+) applies only with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights, and IIHS never tested passenger-side small overlap on the F30.
On the 2018 F30, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning and lane departure warning are not standard; they come in the optional Driving Assistance Package. Blind-spot detection and adaptive cruise are also optional extras, so a base 320i/330i has almost no driver assistance.
When fitted, City Collision Mitigation earns only an Advanced IIHS rating (below Superior), and the version bundled with Active Cruise Control rates just Basic. AEB is optional, it is a low-speed City system, and there is no nighttime pedestrian capability.
Active Blind Spot Detection is an option, not standard on any volume trim. It only warns, with a mirror light and then a steering-wheel vibration, and never steers. Rear cross-traffic alert was not part of the standard F30 equipment.
Lane departure warning is optional and works by vibrating the steering wheel. The F30 sedan offered little or no active lane keeping or centering in the US, which is crude next to later systems.
Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go is optional and works across the full speed range, but it does not combine with lane centering into a highway-assist mode. Its bundled Extended Collision Mitigation rates only Basic with IIHS.
The 2018 3 Series has no hands-free driving system. BMW's hands-on Traffic Jam Assistant and later Highway Assistant arrived only with the G20 generation and after.
IIHS rates the standard LED headlights and the 320i's halogens Poor. Only the curve-adaptive LEDs with high-beam assist in the Executive package reach Acceptable, and no configuration is rated Good.
The F30 has a fairly low cowl, a modest beltline and reasonable pillar sizes, which give the good sightlines typical of the class. A rearview camera is available, and the surround view in the Parking Assistance package is optional.
IIHS rates the F30's LATCH hardware Marginal (328xi) to Poor (328i). The lower anchors sit deep in the seat bight and the tethers are hard to use, and the compact rear bench makes multiple car seats tight.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.31C+
The F30 3 Series sedan seats five in every trim.
Published front headroom is generous for a compact luxury sedan.
Front legroom is average for the class.
Rear headroom is good for a compact sedan with a sloping roofline.
Rear legroom is fine for average adults but trails mid-size sedans, as is typical for compact luxury cars.
The US-market spec for the F30 sedan lists 13 cu ft. BMW's European figure is 480 L, the same nominal trunk as the G20 that replaced it, so the gap to the 2019 car's 17.0 cu ft listing comes from the measurement method.
Door pockets, a modest console bin and cupholders are adequate. Storage is not a strength, and the 40/20/40 folding rear seat is the main flexibility feature.
The front seats are supportive and highly adjustable, especially the optional sport seats. Power lumbar requires the Convenience package, and the rear bench is fine for medium trips.
The suspension is compliant and well controlled on the base setup. Standard run-flat tires and the M Sport suspension add firmness over sharp impacts at low speed.
Wind noise is well suppressed, but coarse-pavement road noise from the run-flats and the four-cylinder's clatter are audible.
Dual-zone climate is standard. Heated front seats and a heated wheel are optional through packages, and there are no ventilated seats or rear climate zone in the volume configuration.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the 3 Series's weakest categories.0.66F
MY2018 is the final model year of the F30 generation (2012–2018 per Wikipedia), and its entry point is the 320i with the 180-hp 2.0L turbo four. Range climbs through 330i ($40,250), 330e, 340i ($48,950) and 340i xDrive ($50,950).
The volume F30 configuration was the 330i xDrive ($42,250 + $995 = $43,245 delivered), typically ordered with the Premium Package (heated seats, comfort access, lumbar) and metallic paint, which lands most window stickers in the mid-$45k–$47k range.
Scheduled service is covered for the first 3 yr/36k mi by BMW Ultimate Care, but years 4–5 bring brakes, tires (run-flats), fluids and typical B46/B48 four-cylinder repairs (water pump/thermostat, oil filter housing gasket) at German-luxury labor rates. Mature, well-sorted final-year F30 avoids first-year issues, but costs still trail Lexus IS and Acura TLX.
Final-year F30 sedans depreciated steeply once the redesigned G20 arrived, partially cushioned by the 2021–2023 used-car price spike. A ~$46k 330i xDrive was typically worth about $19–21k at five years — behind Lexus IS and Genesis G70, comparable to Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class.
BMW's standard New Vehicle Limited Warranty — midpoint of the 3–5 yr band and on par with Mercedes and Audi; Genesis offers 5 yr/60k.
BMW provides no separate, longer powertrain warranty — powertrain coverage ends with the 4 yr/50k basic term, the floor of the band and far behind Genesis/Hyundai/Kia 10 yr/100k. The 330e's 8-yr high-voltage battery coverage does not apply to the scored gas 330i.
BMW Ultimate Care (introduced for MY2017, replacing the old 4 yr/50k Maintenance Program) covers 3 yr/36k mi of scheduled maintenance plus 4 yr unlimited-mile Roadside Assistance and a BMW Assist/ConnectedDrive trial. Shorter than the pre-2017 BMW plan and Genesis/Jaguar 5-yr programs, but better than Audi/Mercedes, which included no scheduled maintenance in 2018.
$46,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (43% retained, or about $19,780) leaves about $26,220 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $33,220 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the 3 Series's strongest categories.2.90B-
2018 is the seventh and final model year of the F30 generation (2012–2018), so its early-life faults had largely been worked out; the volume 330i carried the B46/B48 engine introduced for 2017. J.D. Power rated it well and Consumer Reports rated it average, which puts it mid-pack overall, ahead of the first-year 2019 G20.
In this era BMW sat mid-pack in dependability studies, usually around the industry average in J.D. Power VDS and in the middle third of Consumer Reports brand rankings. That is ahead of most European rivals and well behind Lexus and Toyota.
Most NHTSA campaigns that list the 2018 3 Series target the 328d diesel (EGR-cooler fire risk and related campaigns) or the 330e PHEV, not the gas 330i volume trim. Gas-car campaigns were limited to items such as crankshaft-sensor firmware and the high-pressure fuel pump, and there is no systemic gas-powertrain recall.
The 330i's B46/B48 2.0L turbo four (it replaced the timing-chain-prone N20 for 2017) and the ZF 8HP automatic are mature, well-regarded units, and the 340i's B58 inline-six is among BMW's most durable modern engines. Owner reports note occasional oil consumption and coolant or oil leaks typical of the brand, but no systemic failures.
By 2018 the F30 cabin was well built but dated, and reviewers criticized hard plastics and a plain design compared with the Mercedes C-Class (W205) and Audi A4 (B9), which had moved the class upmarket. It was competitive but not class-leading for the price.
Late-cycle F30 production was mature, with tight panel gaps and solid door feel; owner complaints centre on infotainment software glitches rather than rattles or misalignment.
BMW had roughly 340 US retailers with dense metro and suburban coverage and placed at or above the premium average in J.D. Power's Customer Service Index; rural coverage is thinner.
Parts are plentiful through the dealer network and a large F30 enthusiast aftermarket (FCP Euro, ECS Tuning), but out-of-warranty repair and maintenance costs are among the highest in the segment.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the 3 Series's weakest categories.1.31D
The volume 330i ships with a 6.5-in display. The 8.8-in touch-capable screen comes only with optional navigation.
iDrive 6.0 with the rotary controller and shortcut keys was among the best-regarded systems of its time. The base 6.5-in non-navigation unit is dated and small.
Wireless Apple CarPlay was optional, required navigation, and carried a fee or subscription. Android Auto was not offered.
Navigation Professional is capable but optional. Voice control is command-based rather than natural-language.
The base system is adequate. A Harman Kardon surround system is available and well regarded.
Analog gauges with a small info display are standard. A partially digital Dynamic Digital Instrument Cluster is optional in the Executive Package.
The F30's head unit supports only over-the-air map updates with navigation. BMW Remote Software Upgrade arrived on later Operating System 7 models such as the G20.
The BMW Connected app offers remote lock and unlock, vehicle locate, horn and lights, and climate ventilation. It has no digital key, and some services are tied to ConnectedDrive subscriptions.
USB-A ports are standard with no USB-C. Wireless charging is a $500 option, and there are no AC outlets.
Push-button start is standard. Comfort Access proximity entry is optional in the Convenience Package, and the hands-free trunk comes with it. There is no phone-as-key.
A backup camera is standard. Park Distance Control, Surround View and Parking Assistant are optional.
A color head-up display is available on the volume 330i through the Premium Package, not limited to top trims.
8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.54D
Rear doors and headroom are decent, but LATCH anchors are hard to use and rear legroom is compact. The 13 cu ft US-rated trunk limits stroller-plus-gear loads.
The 5-star NHTSA overall rating and Good IIHS crash results are strong. Forward collision warning, lane departure warning and blind-spot monitoring are all optional extras.
Front comfort is excellent, but rear amenities are thin (no rear climate zone) and the trunk is modest for four people's luggage.
The torquey turbo four and smooth ZF 8-speed make traffic easy. The abrupt auto stop-start and firm run-flat ride are minor irritants.
Fuel economy is good for a 248-hp luxury sedan, but premium fuel, run-flat tires and BMW consumables push per-mile costs to average or worse.
The compact footprint, 37.1-ft turning circle and good outward visibility make it easy in town. Sensors and surround view are optional.
A compact luxury sedan with no US tow rating and a modest trunk is not meaningfully work-capable.
It is a luxury-oriented car with costly parts and premium-fuel turbo engines, unsuited to hard commercial use.
There are no onboard power outlets, tie-downs beyond basic trunk hooks, or upfit ecosystem.
It is a stable, comfortable highway car with good fuel range, but noticeable road noise and optional-only adaptive cruise with no lane centering limit fatigue reduction.
xDrive AWD is available and handles snowy or gravel roads. Low ground clearance, no tow rating and no outlets keep it pavement-oriented.
A 40/20/40 folding rear seat allows long items, but the sedan trunk opening and 13 cu ft US rating make bulky gear a squeeze.
9Driving ExperienceThe 3 Series's best-graded category.2.96B-
It has balanced RWD handling with excellent composure, still near the top of the class. The 2018 Alfa Giulia was judged sharper.
The electric steering is precise and well weighted but notably less communicative than earlier 3 Series generations.
Reviewers note strong, progressive brakes with a firm, consistent pedal.
The ZF 8-speed is superbly calibrated and the turbo four responds well. The auto stop-start is abrupt and intrusive.
The turbo four sounds coarse and uninspiring under load, a step down from BMW's six-cylinders (the 340i is much sweeter).
This is an average turning diameter for a RWD compact luxury sedan.
It has a low, well-aligned driving position, a wide adjustment range and a driver-oriented center stack with logical iDrive controls.
It is still an enjoyable RWD sport sedan with a manual available. The F30's numb steering and droning four cost it its old benchmark status.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the 3 Series's strongest categories.2.38C+
The 2018 330i includes the 248-hp 2.0L turbo, 8-speed automatic, Sensatec upholstery, 10-way power front seats, navigation with the 8.8-inch iDrive display (now standard), and Active Driving Assistant light — but heated seats, keyless entry, LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise are all package options ($2–5k). Genesis G70 and Volvo S60 offered more at similar money.
Broad lineup gives value entry points — the $34,900 320i, the 330e PHEV with federal tax credit, and the 320-hp 340i straight-six at $48,950 that offered strong performance per dollar. But the volume 330i is expensive once optioned, and as a final-year F30 it was being outclassed by fresher Alfa Giulia and Genesis G70 at similar prices.
MY2018 had one of the broadest compact-luxury sedan lineups ever offered: 320i, 330i, 330e iPerformance PHEV, 340i (each in RWD and xDrive), plus the 328d diesel, a six-speed manual on 330i/340i, Sport/Luxury/M Sport lines, and Gran Turismo and wagon body styles alongside the M3.
3 Series US sales were roughly 44,500 in 2018, still the best-selling German compact luxury sedan alongside the C-Class, but down sharply from 100k+ peaks earlier in the decade as buyers shifted to SUVs and the Tesla Model 3 (~140k) surged past it.
BMW is an aspirational top-tier luxury brand in the US, and the 3 Series is its signature 'Ultimate Driving Machine' nameplate — among the most recognized cars in the segment.
As the final F30 year with the G20 announced in October 2018, 2018 3 Series stock drew heavy discounting — aggressive subsidized leases, low-APR financing, loyalty/conquest and college-grad rebates, and dealer clearance discounts often $5k+ off MSRP; the 330e added a ~$4,000 federal tax credit.
MY2018 is the seventh and final model year of the F30 generation (launched 2012, LCI facelift for MY2016); the all-new G20 was unveiled in October 2018 and went on sale for MY2019, so 2018 buyers got an aging car with immediate replacement.
Still well-reviewed for its powertrains (especially the 340i's B58 six), but critics widely judged the late F30 to have softened its steering and handling; it was not a 10Best pick in its final years and generally lost comparison tests to the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Genesis G70.
