The verdict

A capable compact luxury sedan, strong on driving and held back by ownership.

The 2020 BMW 3 Series is a proper return to sport-sedan form — the second year of the G20 platform brought back the sharp handling and driver focus fans wanted, and the new-for-2020 M340i xDrive rips to 60 mph in a claimed 4.1 seconds (tested closer to 3.8). It's a class-benchmark drive with a top-shelf iDrive 7 interface and 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ credentials, but 2020 is a lean year for the lineup: no 330e plug-in hybrid, no G80 M3, and every trim demands premium fuel. Great pick if you want the driving experience and don't mind that the 330i starts at $41,745 and gets pricey fast once you add packages.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the 3 Series's weakest categories.1.98C-
Horsepower
255 hp (330i / 330i xDrive); 382 hp (M340i xDrive, 48V MHEV I6, new for 2020)
32/100
#4 of 12 in classCompare all →

Volume 330i uses the B48 2.0L turbo I4 rated at 255 hp @ 5,000-6,500 rpm — the same figure BMW quotes across the G20's US life. The M340i xDrive joined the US lineup for MY2020 as the new performance halo (the G80 M3 does not arrive until MY2021), stepping output to 382 hp via the 48V mild-hybrid B58 inline-six.

Torque
295 lb-ft (330i / 330i xDrive); 369 lb-ft (M340i xDrive)
53/100
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

The 330i's B48 delivers 295 lb-ft on a broad plateau from 1,550 rpm — a strong tune for a 2.0L four. The new-for-2020 M340i xDrive's B58 raises it to 369 lb-ft from 1,800 rpm, giving the top mainstream trim serious mid-range flexibility.

0–60 mph time
5.6 s (330i RWD); 5.3 s (330i xDrive); 4.1 s (M340i xDrive)
60/100
#4 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW quotes 5.6 s for the 330i RWD and 5.3 s for xDrive; the M340i xDrive runs a claimed 4.1 s (Car and Driver instrumented ~3.8 s), competitive at every price step in the compact luxury sedan class. Without a 3 Series M car in 2020 the range tops out at the M340i.

Powertrain refinement80
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

The B48 in the 330i is a segment-standard smooth turbo four with minimal lag and confident low-end response. The new-for-2020 M340i's 48V-boosted B58 inline-six is one of the most refined engines in class per multiple reviewer consensus — creamy, linear, and free of stumble. No PHEV in the US lineup this year keeps the range slightly less varied than the eventual 2021+ car.

Transmission behavior90
#1 of 12 in classCompare all →

Every 2020 US 3 Series uses the ZF 8HP 8-speed Steptronic — the segment benchmark for crisp, decisive gear selection with excellent paddle response and never-hunts behavior. The G80 M3's 6-speed manual and reinforced 8HP tune don't arrive until MY2021, so there is no manual option in 2020, capping the score just under the 2021 car.

AWD/4WD availability72
#6 of 12 in classCompare all →

xDrive is a low-cost option on the 330i and standard on the M340i xDrive — the M340i is xDrive-only in the US for 2020 (the M340i RWD arrives MY2021). The rear-biased multi-plate clutch system is well-executed but there is no low-range or terrain hardware, which is appropriate for the class.

Powertrain lineup breadth52
#9 of 12 in classCompare all →

For US MY2020 the 3 Series offers only two powertrains — the 2.0L B48 turbo four (330i / 330i xDrive) and the 3.0L B58 turbo-six 48V mild-hybrid (M340i xDrive). The G20 330e PHEV does not reach US dealers until MY2021, and the G80 M3 also arrives MY2021, leaving the 2020 lineup notably narrower than most compact-lux rivals that already offered PHEV or full-EV trims.

2Efficiency & RangeOne of the 3 Series's weakest categories.1.23D
Combined fuel economy
30 MPG combined (330i RWD); 28 MPG (330i xDrive); 25 MPG (M340i RWD); 24 MPG (M340i xDrive)
50/100
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

The volume 330i RWD posts 30 MPG combined on EPA premium-fuel testing — moderate for the compact luxury sedan class; xDrive drops to 28 MPG, and the newly introduced M340i inline-six drops to 25 MPG RWD / 24 MPG xDrive. No hybrid or PHEV variant was offered in the US for 2020.

City fuel economy
26 MPG city (330i RWD); 25 MPG (330i xDrive); 22 MPG (M340i RWD); 21 MPG (M340i xDrive)
45/100
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

The 330i's B48 2.0L turbo — without any 48V mild-hybrid assist — manages 26 MPG city on the EPA cycle, respectable but well behind hybrid competitors at this end of the sedan class.

Highway fuel economy
36 MPG highway (330i RWD); 34 MPG (330i xDrive); 30 MPG (M340i RWD); 28 MPG (M340i xDrive)
57/100
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

A tall 8-speed automatic top gear and rear-drive final drive let the 330i cruise at 36 MPG highway — decent for a premium-fuel gas sedan but still trailing hybrid rivals like the Camry and Accord.

Driving range
~468 mi (330i RWD, 15.6 gal × 30 MPG); ~437 mi (330i xDrive); ~390 mi (M340i RWD); ~374 mi (M340i xDrive)
48/100
#4 of 12 in classCompare all →

EPA combined MPG on the 15.6-gallon tank yields roughly 468 miles of cruising range for the 330i RWD — solid, though not class-leading versus hybrid or long-tank rivals.

Estimated annual fuel cost
~$2,000/yr (330i RWD, EPA 15k mi, premium); ~$2,150/yr (330i xDrive); ~$2,400/yr (M340i RWD); ~$2,500/yr (M340i xDrive)
55/100
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

EPA's 15,000-mile annual estimate for the 2020 330i RWD lands near $2,000 on premium unleaded — moderate absolute cost, but pushed up by the premium-fuel mandate that applies across the entire gas lineup.

Fuel requirements25
#10 of 12 in classCompare all →

Every 2020 3 Series variant — 330i, 330i xDrive, M340i, M340i xDrive — requires 91-octane premium unleaded, adding meaningful cost over regular. With no PHEV or hybrid option available for 2020 to offset consumption, there's no way to duck the premium requirement.

3SafetyOne of the 3 Series's strongest categories.3.06B
NHTSA overall rating
4.5 stars (inferred; NHTSA has not published a complete overall vehicle score for the 2020 G20 3 Series)
75/100
#8 of 12 in classCompare all →

NHTSA has not published a complete overall vehicle score for the 2020 G20 BMW 3 Series sedan; value inferred from the previous F30 generation's 5-star result discounted for the absence of a fresh confirmatory test on the current generation.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness83
#5 of 12 in classCompare all →

The 2020 BMW 3 Series sedan (G20) earned IIHS 2020 Top Safety Pick+ recognition with Good ratings across small overlap front (driver and passenger), moderate overlap front, original side impact, roof strength, and head restraints tests. Front crash prevention is Superior vehicle-to-vehicle and Advanced for daytime pedestrian; the + designation required builds equipped with the Good-rated adaptive LED headlights.

Standard ADAS suite breadth76
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 2020 3 Series trim and includes AEB with pedestrian detection, frontal collision warning, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and speed limit info. Full-range Active Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go and Lane Keeping Assistant remain bundled in the optional Driving Assistance Package, capping the standard-suite score.

Automatic emergency braking performance76
#8 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW's AEB with pedestrian detection earns Superior in IIHS vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and Advanced for daytime pedestrian on the 2020 G20 3 Series. The system was tested under the older IIHS FCP protocol; nighttime pedestrian performance under the updated 2023+ protocol is not established for the 2020 build.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage80
#1 of 12 in classCompare all →

Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are standard fleet-wide on the 2020 3 Series via Active Driving Assistant, with visual and auditory alerts and a steering-nudge intervention when the driver initiates a lane change into a detected vehicle.

Lane keeping & centering80
#1 of 12 in classCompare all →

Lane Departure Warning is standard on the 2020 3 Series; Lane Keeping Assistant with Side Collision Protection and lane centering ship with the optional Driving Assistance Package. Reviewers describe BMW's lane centering as smooth and well-damped on the highway with limited ping-ponging when engaged.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist85
#1 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW Active Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go is a highly polished full-speed-range system on the 2020 3 Series that integrates cleanly with Lane Keeping Assistant for a competent combined highway assist. Reviewers consistently rate BMW's ACC among the best premium implementations for smoothness and predictable braking behavior.

Hands-free driving availability20
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW's Extended Traffic Jam Assistant offered brief hands-off operation in stop-and-go traffic below 40 mph on certain equipped 2020 3 Series builds, but no true highway hands-free system was available — Highway Assistant launched later on other models. The 3 Series otherwise requires hands on the wheel with Lane Keeping Assistant engaged.

Headlight performance78
#1 of 12 in classCompare all →

LED headlights with automatic high beams are standard on every 2020 3 Series trim, and BMW's Adaptive LED headlights with cornering lights are available. IIHS rated the 2020 3 Series headlights Good with the Adaptive LED option and Acceptable on the base LED build, with the Good rating required for TSP+ eligibility.

Outward visibility72
#5 of 12 in classCompare all →

Forward sightlines are good on the 2020 3 Series with a low cowl and slim A-pillars, but rearward visibility is compromised by the fastback-style roofline, thick C-pillars, and small rear window. Rearview camera is standard; Parking Assistant Plus with a 360-degree surround-view camera is optional.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability62
#7 of 12 in classCompare all →

Two outboard LATCH sets with a middle tether anchor; anchors are recessed behind seat cushion covers requiring some digging. Compact-sedan rear door aperture and cabin width make 3-across seat fitment difficult and rear-facing seat installation tight behind average-height front occupants.

4Space & ComfortGrades above the middle of the scale.2.71B-
Seating capacity
5 seats (2 front, 3 rear)
100/100
#1 of 12 in classCompare all →

The 2020 G20 3 Series sedan seats five in a 2+3 configuration, though the rear center position is compromised by the transmission tunnel hump and firm cushion and is best used occasionally.

Front headroom
38.7 in (with standard panoramic moonroof; 40.4 in on rare non-moonroof builds)
68/100
#7 of 12 in classCompare all →

Front headroom measures 38.7 in with the standard panoramic moonroof that ships on virtually all 2020 US-market cars. Adequate for six-foot occupants but not spacious for the compact luxury sedan class.

Front legroom
42.0 in
50/100
#7 of 12 in classCompare all →

Front legroom of 42.0 in is average for a compact luxury sedan, trailing the roomier Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class of the era. Long-legged drivers fit comfortably but do not enjoy a surplus.

Rear headroom
37.6 in
65/100
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

Rear headroom of 37.6 in is competitive for a compact luxury sedan with a sloping roofline; taller adults may brush the headliner but the seat position keeps the head far enough forward of the C-pillar dip to remain usable.

Rear legroom
35.2 in
32/100
#8 of 12 in classCompare all →

Rear legroom of 35.2 in remains one of the tightest measurements in the compact luxury sedan segment, behind the Audi A4 (35.7 in) and notably behind the Genesis G70 for real behind-tall-driver room. Adults fit for short trips with knees close to seatbacks.

Cargo/trunk volume
17.0 cu ft
70/100
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

Trunk volume of 17.0 cu ft on the 2020 gas 330i/M340i is competitive for the compact luxury sedan class. No PHEV variant was offered in the US for the 2020 model year (the 330e arrived as a 2021), so the smaller battery-intruded trunk does not apply here.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions65
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

Cabin storage is competent but unremarkable: modest center console bin, decent door pockets, a small covered tray under the climate controls, and available wireless charging via the Convenience Package. There is no standout innovation, and the tall transmission tunnel eats into passenger-side foot space.

Seat comfort80
#4 of 12 in classCompare all →

Standard sport seats on the 2020 G20 are firm but supportive with strong lateral bolstering, and the optional M Sport seats (standard on M340i) add adjustable thigh support and are widely praised for all-day comfort. Rear seat cushioning is short on under-thigh support for adults, which caps the score short of the segment leaders.

Ride quality78
#4 of 12 in classCompare all →

The 2020 G20 introduced a redesigned suspension with lift-related dampers that delivers a well-controlled ride with markedly better compliance than the outgoing F30. Optional Adaptive M Suspension on M340i broadens the range, but 19-inch M Sport wheels and summer performance rubber introduce impact harshness over broken pavement, keeping this short of plush segment benchmarks.

Cabin quietness74
#5 of 12 in classCompare all →

Highway cabin isolation on the G20 is a clear improvement over the previous F30 with acoustic front glass optional and reduced wind noise, but tire and some road noise still intrude at freeway speeds, particularly on the summer performance rubber fitted to M340i. Class leaders on quietness (Genesis G80, Lexus ES) remain quieter.

Climate & comfort features70
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard across the 2020 lineup with rear-seat vents included, but heated front seats and heated steering wheel are bundled into the Convenience Package rather than standard equipment, and ventilated seats are not offered on this generation. Remote pre-conditioning is available via BMW ConnectedDrive services.

5Cost of OwnershipThe 3 Series's lowest-graded category.0.90F
Base MSRP
$41,745 (330i RWD base $40,750 + $995 destination)
40/100
#9 of 12 in classCompare all →

The 2020 330i RWD sedan was the entry point at $40,750 base plus $995 destination. Mid-pack pricing for a compact luxury sedan; the 330e PHEV did not join the US lineup until MY2021.

Volume-Trim Price
~$47,000 (330i xDrive with Premium Package, typical order)
32/100
#9 of 12 in classCompare all →

The typical 2020 order was a 330i xDrive with Premium Package (heated seats, keyless comfort access, SiriusXM, upgraded audio) plus paint and wheel options — most sold in the low-to-mid $46k–$48k range. Roughly the same as the 2021 configuration since BMW held prices flat year-over-year for the G20.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$6,800 (5-yr maintenance + repair, retrospective class estimate)
34/100
#7 of 12 in classCompare all →

Scheduled service costs are modest through the 3-yr / 36k Ultimate Care period, but out-of-warranty repair risk on the G20 has proven typical of German luxury compacts and slightly elevated as the first-generation year of the G20 platform. In line with same-era Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~48% of MSRP retained at 5 years (retrospective 2020→2025)
43/100
#5 of 12 in classCompare all →

Retrospective data now available: 2020 3 Series retained roughly 45–52% of MSRP over five years, aided by pandemic-era used-price inflation that lifted the entire luxury-compact segment. Trails Lexus IS and Genesis G70 (55%+) but ahead of Jaguar XE and Audi A4.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (bumper-to-bumper)
50/100
#1 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW's standard New Vehicle Limited Warranty for 2020 3 Series — midpoint of the 3–5 yr segment band and consistent across the compact luxury German field.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (matches basic; no extended powertrain)
0/100
#1 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW does not publish a separate longer powertrain warranty — powertrain coverage runs coincident with the basic 4-year / 50,000-mile term, at the very bottom of the industry range and well behind Hyundai/Kia/Genesis 10 yr / 100k. No PHEV in 2020, so no separate high-voltage battery coverage applies to this model year.

Complimentary maintenance & perks65
#4 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW Ultimate Care covers 3 yr / 36,000 mi of scheduled maintenance (engine oil service, brake fluid, engine air filters, cabin micro-filter) plus 4 yr unlimited-mile Roadside Assistance and a BMW ConnectedDrive trial. Shorter than the Genesis 5-year / 60k program but stronger than the base Audi/Mercedes offerings, which include no scheduled maintenance for MY2020.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$31,240 (≈$24,440 depreciation + $6,800 maintenance)
43/100
#8 of 12 in classCompare all →

$47,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (48% retained, or about $22,560) leaves about $24,440 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $31,240 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.49C+
Predicted reliability62
#8 of 12 in classCompare all →

Consumer Reports gave the 2020 3 Series an average 3/5 predicted reliability at launch of MY2020, and J.D. Power's 2020 Vehicle Dependability Study placed BMW in the middle of the industry. Retrospective owner-reported issues on the G20 remain average — no widespread systemic failures, but not top-tier either.

Brand reliability track record58
#9 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW has consistently landed in the middle third of major dependability studies — J.D. Power VDS mid-teens rank, Consumer Reports brand reliability mid-pack. Better than Alfa Romeo/Land Rover but well behind Lexus/Toyota/Honda and typically trailing Audi.

Recall & TSB history68
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

The G20 generation has accumulated a modest number of recalls for the 2020 model year — high-pressure fuel pump, seat belt tensioner, and side airbag inflator — none catastrophic, and TSBs have been in-line with luxury-segment norms. Cleaner than the earlier F30 which had electric water pump and timing chain concerns.

Powertrain durability reputation80
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

The B48 2.0L turbo four is a proven upgrade over the earlier N20 (no timing-chain-guide issue) and the B58 3.0L turbo inline-six in the M340i is one of BMW's most respected modern engines — also sold to Toyota for the Supra with 200k-mile durability track records. Backed by the ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic, considered among the most reliable transmissions in production.

Interior material quality78
#10 of 12 in classCompare all →

G20 interior was widely praised as a major step up from the F30 — soft-touch surfaces across upper dash and door tops, well-finished switchgear, satin-chrome accents, and available open-pore wood on premium trims. Reviewers rated it competitive with the Audi A4 and above the Mercedes C-Class then in run-out.

Fit & finish74
#8 of 12 in classCompare all →

Assembly at BMW's Munich plant is generally tight, and J.D. Power 2020 Initial Quality Study saw BMW improve to near-average. Scattered owner reports of minor trim rattles and infotainment glitches on early G20 builds, but nothing widespread.

Dealer & service network70
#7 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW operates roughly 340 franchised dealers across the US — dense in metros, thinner in rural areas but still broader than Audi or Mercedes at the regional level. J.D. Power Customer Service Index has ranked BMW mid-pack among luxury brands, ahead of Audi but behind Lexus and Cadillac.

Parts availability & repair cost42
#10 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW parts pricing is well above mainstream and modestly above segment average — dealer-only OEM parts for many electronic and cooling-system components carry premium markups, and specialty labor rates apply. Aftermarket support from FCP Euro, ECS Tuning, and enthusiast networks eases the burden somewhat, but out-of-warranty ownership costs remain a documented pain point.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the 3 Series's strongest categories.2.96B-
Touchscreen size
8.8 in standard (10.25 in with Live Cockpit Professional / Executive Package)
21/100
#6 of 12 in classCompare all →

The 2020 330i volume trim ships with the standard 8.8-inch iDrive 7 center touchscreen introduced with the G20 generation; the 10.25-inch display comes bundled with Live Cockpit Professional (Executive Package) and is standard on the M340i.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness87
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

iDrive 7 in the G20 was widely praised in 2020 as one of the best luxury infotainment systems — fast graphics, deep menus, and multiple input methods (touchscreen, iDrive rotary knob, voice, gestures). Reviewers ranked it alongside Mercedes MBUX at the top of the segment.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto80
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

Wireless Apple CarPlay is standard on the 2020 3 Series (BMW dropped the subscription in December 2019). Wireless Android Auto was announced in July 2020 and rolled out to iDrive 7 vehicles via over-the-air update in mid-2020, so 2020 models eventually gained both wirelessly — but Android Auto was absent at launch, unlike the fully-supported 2021.

Voice control & native navigation84
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant ("Hey BMW") in iDrive 7 handled natural-language commands well for its era, and BMW's built-in navigation with 3D maps, real-time traffic, and cloud routing was among the best native systems in the compact luxury segment.

Audio system quality78
#5 of 12 in classCompare all →

Standard 10-speaker HiFi audio is competent for the class; the optional 16-speaker, 464-watt Harman Kardon Surround Sound (part of the Executive Package) is well-regarded but not class-leading — no Bowers & Wilkins option is offered on the 3 Series.

Digital instrument cluster68
#5 of 12 in classCompare all →

The base 2020 330i ships with Live Cockpit Plus (5.7-inch info display flanked by analog gauges); the fully digital 12.3-inch Live Cockpit Professional cluster requires the Live Cockpit Pro option or Executive Package — high quality when equipped but not standard on the volume trim.

OTA update capability68
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW's Remote Software Upgrade delivers infotainment, navigation, and select feature updates over the air to iDrive 7 vehicles (the 2020 3 Series received Android Auto this way), but scope is narrower than Tesla-style whole-vehicle OTA — no drivetrain or ADAS updates.

Companion app & remote functions76
#1 of 12 in classCompare all →

My BMW / BMW Connected app provides remote lock/unlock, climate preconditioning, vehicle status, and locate. The iPhone-based Digital Key (Apple CarKey / NFC) launched in July 2020 with iOS 13.6 and became available on eligible 2020 3 Series vehicles mid-year — a class-first for compact luxury.

Charging ports & device power74
#1 of 12 in classCompare all →

USB-C ports front and rear (with one legacy USB-A in the center console), 12V outlets, and optional Qi wireless phone charging (part of the Premium Package). Adequate coverage, though wireless charging is not standard.

Keyless & remote access76
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

Push-button start is standard; Comfort Access (proximity entry) is optional via the Convenience/Premium Package and effectively standard on well-equipped 330i orders; BMW Digital Key for iPhone became available mid-year 2020, a first for compact luxury sedans.

Camera & parking aids74
#4 of 12 in classCompare all →

Rear-view camera and Park Distance Control (front/rear sensors) are standard on 330i; the Parking Assistance Package adds a surround-view camera with 3D View and Parking Assistant with automated parallel/perpendicular parking.

Head-up display availability76
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

Full-color Head-Up Display is optional as part of the Premium/Executive Package — well-regarded for size and content (nav, speed, ADAS alerts), but not standard on the volume 330i trim.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.03C
Kid & car-seat practicality75
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

Conventional 4-door sedan with wide-opening rear doors, 35.2 in of rear legroom, and outboard LATCH anchors makes daily car-seat installs workable, and the 17 cu-ft trunk swallows a stroller. Rear-facing seats behind taller drivers are tight and the compact cabin is less roomy than mid-size rivals.

Family safety package80
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

Standard Active Driving Assistant on every 2020 3 Series covers AEB with pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning, and the G20 3 Series earned IIHS 2020 Top Safety Pick+ (with the Good-rated Adaptive LED headlights). Full-range Active Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go and Lane Keeping Assistant remain in the optional Driving Assistance Package rather than standard, capping the score short of the segment ceiling.

Family road-trip comfort76
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

Supportive front sport seats, hushed highway cabin, standard dual-zone climate with rear-seat vents, and a 17 cu-ft trunk that handles a family of four's luggage make this a comfortable medium-haul family runner. Rear legroom is adequate for kids and average adults but tight for taller passengers on long stints, and rear amenities are thinner than mid-size or three-row alternatives.

Daily driving ease84
#1 of 12 in classCompare all →

The pre-LCI 2020 330i pairs the 2.0L B48 turbo (255 hp) with the ZF 8-speed auto, supportive sport seats, and the mature iDrive 7 interface on an 8.8-in center display, with physical HVAC hard-buttons still present — a control layout widely praised for low-effort daily use. Stop-start is not as polished as the later 48V mild-hybrid updates, but the overall low-fatigue commuting recipe is strong.

Commuting cost efficiency62
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

The 2020 330i RWD returns 26/36/30 mpg city/hwy/combined on premium — respectable for a rear-drive luxury sedan — but premium fuel plus BMW consumables (run-flats, dealer service after the 3-year/36k Ultimate Care lapses) keeps per-mile cost above mainstream commuters. Unlike 2021+, no 330e PHEV was offered in the US for MY2020, so there is no plug-in option to reduce fuel costs for short-range commuters.

Parking & maneuverability80
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

At 185.9 in long and 71.9 in wide with light electric steering and a compact turning circle, the 3 Series threads through city traffic and slots into tight parking spaces easily. A rear-view camera is standard and Parking Assistant Plus with a 360-degree surround-view camera is available.

Work capability18
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

No US towing rating published, no bed or payload spec, and only a 17 cu-ft trunk. The 3 Series is not meaningfully work-capable.

Durability for work duty25
#5 of 12 in classCompare all →

Luxury-oriented interior in SensaTec or leather with a carpeted trunk offers no washable work surfaces, and BMW has no US fleet or work-oriented 3 Series variant. The B48 turbo four is durable in normal service but the car isn't engineered for hard-use abuse, and as the first US model year of the G20 platform there is limited long-term durability data.

Jobsite & upfit practicality14
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

No 120V outlet in the cargo area, no meaningful tie-downs beyond trunk hooks, no factory-installed trailer hitch, and no roof-rack or upfit ecosystem. Essentially no work-oriented provisions.

Long-distance comfort & range82
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

Superb front seats, a hushed highway cruise, and the optional Driving Assistance Package with full-range adaptive cruise plus lane centering deliver a very strong mile-eater. A 15.6 gal tank paired with 36 mpg highway yields ~550 mi of cruising range on the 330i RWD; the optional Extended Traffic Jam Assistant offers limited low-speed hands-off use but no true highway hands-free system.

Outdoor & adventure capability45
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

xDrive AWD is available across the range (standard on M340i xDrive) and handles snow and light gravel well. But roughly 5.5 in of ground clearance, no factory roof rails, no factory hitch, and standard run-flat performance tires keep it pavement-bound — not a genuine adventure enabler.

Gear & luggage flexibility66
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

The 17 cu-ft trunk is class-competitive among compact luxury sedans, and the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat with center pass-through swallows skis or long items. Absent roof rails, factory hitch, and any hatch-style opening cap bulky-gear flexibility.

9Driving ExperienceThe 3 Series's best-graded category.3.55A-
Handling & agility90
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

The 2020 3 Series is the second year of the G20 platform, widely reviewed as a return to sport-sedan form after the softer F30. The 330i (and especially the new-for-2020 M340i) delivers benchmark body control, a rear-biased chassis, and available adaptive M suspension; testers routinely note 0.90+ g of grip in M Sport trim.

Steering feel82
#4 of 12 in classCompare all →

The electric rack is quick, precise, and naturally weighted with Comfort/Sport modes, but reviewers consistently flag reduced tactile feedback vs. earlier hydraulic-assist E90 3 Series. Variable-ratio steering with M Sport helps in tight maneuvers.

Braking confidence84
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

Firm, progressive pedal with strong fade resistance in track-adjacent testing; 2020 330i instrumented 70-0 stops typically fall around 160-165 ft, with M Sport brakes on M340i shortening them further. IIHS awarded the 2020 3 Series Superior front crash prevention.

Powertrain smoothness & response85
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

The B48 2.0T (330i) and B58 3.0T (M340i) paired to the ZF 8HP eight-speed remain among the smoothest, most responsive gas-plus-auto combinations available; tip-in is linear and shifts are crisp. The 2020 car lacks the 48V mild-hybrid starter/generator that later G20s (LCI) received, so stop-start is competent but noticeably less seamless than post-refresh cars.

Drivetrain noise & vibration80
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

The B58 inline-six in the M340i is genuinely sonorous and a highlight of the range, but the volume 330i's B48 four-cylinder can sound thrashy under hard acceleration and BMW's piped-in Active Sound is polarizing. At cruise the powertrain is well isolated.

Turning circle
37.7 ft (curb-to-curb, 330i RWD)
38/100
#8 of 12 in classCompare all →

Curb-to-curb turning diameter for the 330i RWD; xDrive AWD models are marginally wider. Typical for a compact luxury sedan on the G20 platform.

Driving position & ergonomics87
#1 of 12 in classCompare all →

Excellent seat adjustment range, ideal wheel-to-pedal relationship, and strong forward sightlines. The pre-LCI 2020 car retains physical HVAC controls, a rotary iDrive 7.0 controller, and hard-key shortcuts around the center console — a meaningful ergonomic edge over later touch-heavy 3 Series interiors.

Fun-to-drive factor91
#2 of 12 in classCompare all →

The G20 was widely hailed as a genuine return to driver's-car form for the 3 Series line. Even the 330i is engaging thanks to its rear-drive chassis and willing turbo-four; the new-for-2020 M340i earned Car and Driver 10Best honors and is one of the most enthusiast-recommended sport sedans of the year.

10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.2.95B-
Standard equipment generosity60
#12 of 12 in classCompare all →

The 2020 330i's ~$40,750 base includes an 8-speed ZF automatic, LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, dual-zone climate, SensaTec upholstery, Active Driving Assistant (forward-collision warning with city collision mitigation, lane-departure warning), an 8.8-inch iDrive 7 display, and standard wireless Apple CarPlay — but staples like heated seats, digital gauge cluster, blind-spot monitor, adaptive cruise, and the 10.25-inch touchscreen live in Convenience (~$1,750), Premium (~$2,650), and Executive/Driving Assistance packages that quickly add $3-5k. Rivals like the Genesis G70 and Volvo S60 include substantially more at their base prices.

Feature value per dollar70
#8 of 12 in classCompare all →

The volume 330i is a competent but expensive-to-option luxury sedan whose value is roughly average for the segment. The new-for-2020 M340i (from ~$54,000) is the standout — its 382-hp B58 inline-six delivers near-M3 performance for tens of thousands less than dedicated M cars and is the segment's bang-for-buck pick, but no 330e PHEV was offered in the US for MY2020 to add a tax-credit-driven value story.

Trim & configuration breadth68
#10 of 12 in classCompare all →

Four sedan configurations across a single gas powertrain family — 330i, 330i xDrive, new-for-2020 M340i and M340i xDrive — with RWD or AWD on every trim and a coherent walk from ~$41k to ~$57k. Narrower than 2021 (which added 330e/330e xDrive PHEVs and the G80 M3) because no PHEV or dedicated M variant was on sale in the US for MY2020, but still competitive with the C-Class and A4 lineups of the same year.

Sales popularity & market acceptance63
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

3 Series US sales were about 29,000 units in 2020 (pandemic-affected), keeping it the best-selling German compact luxury sedan and ahead of the C-Class and A4, but Tesla Model 3 (~95,000 US units) dominated the broader segment. Long-term trend is decline from mid-2010s peaks above 100k as buyers moved to SUVs.

Brand desirability & image84
#4 of 12 in classCompare all →

BMW is a top-tier aspirational luxury brand in the US, and the 3 Series is the model that built its 'Ultimate Driving Machine' reputation — arguably the most recognized nameplate in the compact luxury sedan segment. BMW consistently ranked among top luxury brands in 2020 image studies.

Deals & incentive availability72
#10 of 12 in classCompare all →

2020 was a strong buyer's year for the 3 Series — BMW ran aggressive pandemic-era lease and finance offers on 330i (subsidized APR, 0.9-1.9% financing at various points, loyalty and college-grad rebates typically $500-$1,500) and dealers were willing to negotiate as inventory built up in Q2. No 330e PHEV yet meant no federal tax credit available on the sedan.

Model freshness84
#4 of 12 in classCompare all →

The G20 generation launched for MY2019, making 2020 only its second model year — very fresh, on the latest CLAR architecture with iDrive 7 and a full ADAS suite, and MY2020 added the M340i to the lineup. No LCI refresh or replacement was on the horizon (LCI arrived MY2023, replacement not until MY2026).

Critical reception & awards86
#3 of 12 in classCompare all →

The G20 3 Series won Car and Driver 10Best in 2019 and again in 2020, and MotorTrend, Edmunds, and Consumer Reports all rated it at or near the top of the compact luxury sedan segment. The M340i is a repeat comparison-test winner in its first year. Only Genesis G70 and Alfa Giulia consistently challenge it in specific tests.
