The verdict
A struggling compact suv, strong on safety and held back by performance.
The 2022 CR-V is the outgoing fifth-generation model, and it shows its age mainly in the cabin tech while still delivering what has made it a perennial top-two seller: a roomy, comfortable back seat (40.4 in of legroom), a composed ride, and Honda's strong reliability reputation (82/100 J.D. Power). It's not quick (190 hp, 7.5s to 60) or a towing vehicle (1,500 lbs max), and the 7-inch touchscreen with no wireless CarPlay feels behind rivals already offering bigger screens and phone-free setup. For buyers who want a dependable, spacious, easy-to-live-with crossover and don't care about outright power or the newest tech, it's an easy recommendation at $29,760 for the volume EX AWD trim.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe CR-V's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Single gas engine across the LX/EX/EX-L/Touring lineup for the 2022 model year, a fifth-generation carry-over year with no powertrain changes.
Flat torque curve from the 1.5L turbo-four, standard across all gas trims.
Instrumented test figure for the 1.5T AWD configuration, the volume drivetrain for this generation.
The 1.5L turbo delivers adequate, torquey low-end response for everyday driving but feels strained and vocal under hard acceleration or when passing; reviewers describe it as unobtrusive rather than refined.
CVT pairs well with the flat torque curve for smooth everyday acceleration, but simulated steps and sustained engine drone appear under hard throttle or hill climbs.
Flat 1,500 lb tow rating across the entire 2022 CR-V lineup, unchanged from prior model years of this generation.
Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System is optional on LX/EX/EX-L and standard on Touring, but it is a basic on-demand system with no low-range or terrain-mode sophistication.
7.8-8.2 inches of ground clearance and no off-road-oriented trim, skid plates, or low-range hardware; the CR-V is a pavement-focused crossover.
Two distinct powertrains for 2022 — the 1.5L turbo gas engine and the 2.0L hybrid — covering mainstream buyers, but no PHEV/EV variant and no turbo performance option within the gas lineup.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.29C
AWD is the volume configuration for this generation (standard on Touring, widely optioned below it); FWD scores one MPG combined higher.
EPA city rating for the AWD gas configuration.
EPA highway rating for the AWD gas configuration.
Computed from the EPA combined rating and the 14.0-gallon fuel tank; fueleconomy.gov lists this directly for the AWD trim.
EPA's standard annual fuel cost estimate for the AWD gas configuration at regular unleaded prices.
The 1.5L turbo runs on regular unleaded across every 2022 CR-V gas trim — no premium recommendation or requirement.
3SafetyThe CR-V's best-graded category.2.85B-
NHTSA's 5-star overall rating for the fifth-generation CR-V (2017-2022 body, unchanged for MY2022) carries 5-star frontal and side results with a 4-star rollover result.
IIHS named the 2022 CR-V a Top Safety Pick (not Pick+) because the award applies only to trims with Good- or Acceptable-rated headlights; the volume LX/EX/EX-L/Special Edition trims carry halogen projector headlights rated Marginal, while only Touring/Hybrid Touring earn Good. Core crashworthiness is strong (small overlap front Good both sides, original moderate overlap and side tests Good, roof strength Good, head restraints Good) though IIHS's newer, tougher moderate-overlap and side protocols score this generation lower on re-test.
Honda Sensing (forward collision warning/AEB, Road Departure Mitigation with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow) is standard on every 2022 CR-V trim including the base LX. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, however, are withheld from LX and only join the suite starting at EX, so the full suite is not standard across the range.
IIHS rated the CR-V's front crash prevention Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle tests (avoided collision at both 12 and 25 mph) and Superior for daytime pedestrian detection (avoided the crossing-adult scenario at both speeds, reduced impact speed in the child scenario).
Blind Spot Information System and rear cross-traffic alert are available starting at the EX trim (not on base LX) and are alert-only — flashing indicator plus audible warning, no active steering or braking intervention.
Honda's Lane Keeping Assist System uses the windshield camera and steering-angle data to hold gentle, barely-noticeable centering corrections and reviewers note it tracks smoothly through curves rather than ping-ponging between lane lines; it is functional and standard across the lineup but not class-leading in confidence versus the best centering systems.
Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow is standard across the 2022 CR-V range and functions down to a stop, combined with lane-keeping for a basic highway-assist experience; it is capable but unremarkable next to segment-leading combined systems, with reviewers noting occasional firm/late braking behavior in traffic.
Honda had no hands-free highway driving system (no equivalent to BlueCruise/Super Cruise/FSD) available on any 2022 CR-V trim; Honda Sensing is a hands-on lane-keeping and adaptive-cruise suite only.
IIHS rated the halogen projector headlights on LX, EX, EX-L and Special Edition (the volume trims) Marginal; Hybrid EX/EX-L LED reflector units scored Acceptable; only Touring and Hybrid Touring LED reflector headlights with high-beam assist earned Good. The volume trim sits in the Marginal band.
Reviewers consistently cite the CR-V's large glass area, low beltline and visible hood line as giving a commanding, open forward view with manageable blind spots versus more style-led rivals; rear visibility is comparatively weaker but is offset by Honda's well-regarded wide-angle rearview camera, standard across the range.
The CR-V provides two complete sets of lower LATCH anchors plus top tether anchors across all three rear positions, with anchors sitting behind clearly marked slits in the seat upholstery, and rear doors that open to nearly 90 degrees for easy seat installation and loading.
4Space & ComfortOne of the CR-V's weakest categories.1.47D
The fifth-generation CR-V is a strict two-row, 5-passenger compact SUV with no 7-seat variant offered in North America.
Volume trim (EX) includes a power moonroof, which clips front headroom versus the sunroof-delete LX.
Consistent across gas trims.
The CR-V's boxy fifth-generation greenhouse gives it segment-leading rear headroom.
Among the roomiest rear seats in the compact SUV class.
No third row is offered on the North American CR-V in any trim or generation — the model is a strict two-row five-seater.
Figure is for gas-powertrain trims (the scored class); hybrid loses cargo space to battery packaging.
Figure is for gas-powertrain trims; near the top for the compact SUV segment.
A deep, configurable center console with a sliding/flipping tray and a bin ahead of the cupholders stood out to reviewers, though it stops short of a signature innovation.
Reviewers call the CR-V comfortable for daily and highway use without singling out the seats as class-leading long-haul thrones.
Reviewers consistently praise the composed, compliant ride as one of the CR-V's strongest traits.
Quiet and refined at cruise, but the turbo engine is coarse and loud under hard acceleration — a known weak point for the gas powertrain.
Heated front seats arrive on Special Edition and up, heated steering wheel on EX-L/Touring; no ventilated seats or rear climate vents upgrade are offered on gas trims, so comfort equipment is mid-pack rather than rich.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the CR-V's strongest categories.2.54C+
Entry trim for the 2022 model year, direct from Honda's own pricing release.
EX AWD is the volume trim for the CR-V lineup, balancing Honda Sensing, moonroof and power liftgate against price; range runs $25,750 (LX 2WD) to $35,550 (Touring AWD).
No published Edmunds True Cost to Own archive for the 2022 model year specifically; figure is interpolated from Edmunds TCO data for adjacent CR-V model years (EX trim), which is consistent year to year for this generation.
The CR-V is a consistent above-average resale performer in the compact SUV class; estimates across valuation sources cluster around 60-70% retention versus a segment average near 50-60%.
Honda's standard basic warranty for all 2022 models, including the CR-V; sits at the low end of the mainstream band versus rivals offering 5 years.
Standard Honda powertrain coverage for 2022; at the low end of the mainstream band versus Hyundai/Kia/Mitsubishi 10-year offers.
Honda Service Pass covers only the first scheduled service (12 months/12,000 miles) rather than multi-year maintenance; 24-hr roadside assistance runs for the 3-yr/36,000-mi basic warranty term, and HondaLink Remote includes just a 3-month complimentary trial before a paid subscription. A short included-maintenance window plus baseline roadside, with no standout extras.
$29,760 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (65% retained, or about $19,344) leaves about $10,416 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $17,216 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the CR-V's strongest categories.2.85B-
The 5th-generation CR-V (2017-2022, 2022 a carry-over year ahead of the 2023 redesign) carries a strong predicted-reliability record from the two major trackers despite the documented 1.5T oil-dilution issue earlier in the generation.
Honda is a consistent top-5 brand in both Consumer Reports' long-term reliability rankings and J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study through the early 2020s.
The 5th-gen CR-V's 1.5L turbo carries a well-documented, generation-wide oil-dilution TSB (19-039) and a related class-action/extended-warranty response — more than a typical isolated recall, even though the 2022 model year benefits from the software recalibration fix rolled out by Honda. Formal NHTSA recalls specific to this vintage (fuel pump, tire certification label, seat-weight sensor) are minor/administrative in nature, not safety-critical systemic failures.
The L15B7-family 1.5L turbo-4 paired with Honda's CVT is the scored gas powertrain, and the turbo engine's cold-climate oil-dilution defect (fuel washing past piston rings, diluting crankcase oil) is a known, litigated issue across this generation, not a resolved one-off — Honda's remedy mitigates but does not eliminate owner-reported recurrence. The CVT itself carries a more ordinary reputation (no major Nissan-style failure pattern).
Reviewers consistently rate the 5th-gen CR-V cabin as a step up for the class, with soft-touch surfaces in primary touch zones and tasteful faux-wood/chrome/brushed-satin trim.
No notable panel-gap, rattle, or assembly complaints surfaced in owner/reviewer coverage for this model year; consistent with Honda's historically strong initial-quality standing, reflected in the "Great" J.D. Power quality score.
Honda runs one of the densest dealer networks in the US (1,000+ dealerships) with a strong service-satisfaction reputation, supporting the CR-V as the brand's volume nameplate.
As one of the best-selling compact SUVs in the US, the CR-V benefits from abundant OEM and aftermarket parts supply and below-average ownership repair costs.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the CR-V's weakest categories.0.20F
Unlike most rivals that step up screen size on upper trims, every 2022 CR-V trim — including Touring — uses the same 7-inch Display Audio unit.
Honda's Display Audio system retains a physical volume knob (a reviewer-praised fix from earlier generations) but the small 7-inch screen and dated graphics feel behind class leaders.
Factory wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto did not arrive until the redesigned 2023 CR-V; every 2022 trim requires a wired connection.
Embedded navigation is available only on the top Touring trim; Honda's native voice recognition is functional but most owners default to phone-projection voice assistants instead.
Standard 180-watt 6-speaker system is adequate; the Touring's 9-speaker setup is a modest step up rather than a branded premium system.
All 2022 CR-V trims use analog gauges with a small multi-information display rather than a configurable full-digital cluster.
The fifth-generation CR-V's infotainment system does not receive meaningful over-the-air software updates; map/system updates are handled via USB or dealer visit.
HondaLink app remote start is limited to the Sport Touring Hybrid; gas trims get only basic HondaLink functions (locate, alerts) via subscription, making the app experience thin for the scored gas powertrain.
Ports are USB-A only (1.5A front, two 2.5A rear) with no USB-C anywhere in the cabin; wireless charging is Touring-exclusive.
Proximity entry, push-button start and remote engine start arrive from Special Edition up — not on the base LX — and there is no phone-as-key capability.
Every trim gets a multi-angle rearview camera with selectable wide/top-down views, but there are no front/rear parking sensors and no 360-degree surround view — that arrives only with the 2023 redesign.
No head-up display is offered on any 2022 CR-V trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.02C
Wide rear door openings, a low, flat load floor, generous rear legroom/headroom, and well-positioned LATCH anchors make the CR-V an easy, segment-strong family hauler.
Honda Sensing (adaptive cruise, forward collision warning, AEB, lane-keeping) is standard on every trim including the base LX, and the CR-V earned IIHS Top Safety Pick — but blind-spot monitoring is withheld from LX/Special Edition, so the cheapest family-friendly trims lack it.
A composed, compliant ride and roomy rear seat support multi-hour family trips, though rear-seat entertainment/amenities are basic and gas-trim cabin noise rises under hard acceleration.
Light controls, a smooth CVT, good visibility, and a relaxed low-speed demeanor make the CR-V an easy, low-fatigue daily driver.
27/32/29 mpg city/highway/combined for the gas AWD volume configuration is average for a compact gas SUV — solid but well behind the class's hybrid options (including Honda's own CR-V Hybrid) on per-mile running cost.
A compact footprint and a 37.4-ft turning diameter make the CR-V easy to place in traffic and tight lots; the standard multi-angle camera helps, though there are no parking sensors.
A 1,500 lb max tow rating and no factory bed/upfit provisions put real work duty well outside the CR-V's brief.
Honda's broader reliability reputation (CR-V predicted reliability rated 'Great' by J.D. Power) suggests it would hold up to abuse, but it is a consumer crossover with no fleet/work-duty track record or hardened trim options.
No onboard AC power, no bed, and only basic cargo tie-downs; there is no work-oriented accessory ecosystem for the CR-V.
A compliant ride, standard adaptive cruise control (Honda Sensing) on every trim, and roughly 400+ miles of highway range on the gas tank make the CR-V a capable mile-eater, even if cabin noise rises under hard throttle.
Real-Time AWD with Intelligent Control is available (standard on Touring, optional below), and 8.2 in of ground clearance with AWD handles gravel and light trails fine, but there's no genuine off-road hardware.
A 60/40 split-folding rear seat, flat load floor, up to 75.8 cu ft with seats down, and available roof rails (Touring) give it strong gear-hauling flexibility for the class.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.02C
Secure and composed but not engaging — reviewers describe confident, fuss-free cornering rather than sporty dynamics.
Accurately weighted and described as 'enthusiastic' by reviewers for the class, though it doesn't deliver notable road feedback.
Reviewers single out strong, consistent brake performance as one of the CR-V's better dynamic traits.
The 1.5L turbo/CVT pairing is smooth and quiet around town but becomes coarse and strained under hard acceleration, a known weak point versus rivals.
Quiet at light throttle and cruise, but the turbo four is notably coarse and loud under wide-open throttle — reviewers flagged it as one of the louder engines in the segment when pushed.
Consistent across trims.
A commanding seating position, good outward visibility, intuitive control layout, and a retained physical volume knob are consistently praised strengths.
Reviewers are explicit that the CR-V prioritizes comfort and refinement over driving enjoyment, with neither the gas nor hybrid powertrain feeling quick or engaging.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.94C-
Honda Sensing (collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise, lane-keeping assist, road departure mitigation) is standard on every 2022 CR-V trim including the base LX, which several rivals still gate behind a mid or upper trim. Base LX is otherwise fairly plain (no power liftgate, no wireless CarPlay/Android Auto).
Pricing tracks closely with the RAV4, CX-5 and Rogue rather than undercutting them, but the CR-V's cargo room, reliability reputation and resale strength add value reviewers consistently cite as offsetting a non-bargain sticker price. Fair value, not a standout.
Seven distinct trims for 2022 (LX, new SE, EX, EX-L, Touring on gas; EX, EX-L, Touring on Hybrid) spanning $25,750-$35,550, with 2WD/AWD choice on every gas trim below Touring. Wide, well-spaced range, though there is no true work/stripper grade below LX.
238,155 U.S. units in 2022, the #2-selling compact SUV behind only the RAV4 despite the chip-shortage inventory crunch depressing volume industry-wide that year. A consistent, strong seller just short of segment-leader status.
Honda carries a strong mainstream reputation for reliability and resale that supports a loyal buyer base, though it is not an aspirational or luxury-image brand.
2022 was a global semiconductor-shortage year with compact-SUV inventory constrained industry-wide; CR-V production was itself supply-limited (part of why RAV4 outsold it by over 70,000 units), and vehicles commonly transacted at or above MSRP with minimal factory incentives.
2022 is the final model year of the fifth generation (2017-2022, facelifted for 2020); the sixth generation was unveiled in July 2022 for the 2023 model year, so 2022 buyers are explicitly buying the outgoing platform with a replacement already announced.
Earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick (not Pick+, missing on headlight scoring) and a 5-star overall NHTSA rating for 2022. Reviewers continued to praise interior space, visibility and reliability but routinely placed rivals like the RAV4 or CX-5 ahead on driving dynamics or infotainment in 2022 comparison tests; no major 10Best/NACTOY win this model year.
