The verdict

A mixed-report compact suv, strong on reliability and held back by performance.

The 2024 CR-V is a roomy, sensible compact SUV. It has one of the biggest back seats in the class (41.0 in of legroom), a 5-star NHTSA rating, 29 MPG combined from the gas AWD model and resale value well above the class norm. Where it falls short is power and features: the 190-hp gas engine is slow (about 8.4 s to 60 mph), the EX makes do with a 7-inch screen and wired phone mirroring, and Honda's 3-year/5-year warranty trails Hyundai and Kia. If you want quicker acceleration and better mileage, the hybrid trims are worth the extra cost.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe CR-V's lowest-graded category.0.01F
Horsepower
190 hp (1.5T gas, LX/EX/EX-L); hybrid trims 204 hp combined
10/100
#15 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2024 gas volume trim (EX) uses the 1.5L turbo four at 190 hp @ 6,000 rpm. 2024 is the second year of the sixth generation (2023–) and the gas powertrain carries over unchanged. The two-motor hybrid is the lineup max at 204 hp.

Torque
179 lb-ft @ 1,700–5,000 rpm (1.5T gas); hybrid motor 247 lb-ft
13/100
#20 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The gas 1.5T peaks at 179 lb-ft across a broad 1,700–5,000 rpm plateau, which is low for the SUV band. The hybrid's 247 lb-ft motor torque is not the scored class.

0–60 mph time
~8.4 s (gas EX AWD; tests 8.2–8.7 s); hybrid AWD ~7.4 s
18/100
#17 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Instrumented tests of the sixth-generation 1.5T AWD fall between 8.2 and 8.7 s, and the powertrain is unchanged for 2024, so the midpoint stands. The hybrid is about a second quicker.

Powertrain refinement64
#11 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 1.5T is smooth and quiet at cruise, and its low-rpm torque plateau keeps turbo lag small. It feels strained on highway merges and grades with a full load. The scored gas version is a step behind the much-praised hybrid.

Transmission behavior64
#16 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The gas CR-V's CVT uses Honda's stepped-shift logic under hard throttle and is among the better CVTs. It still lets revs flare and drone when pushed.

Max towing capacity
1,500 lbs (1.5T gas, properly equipped); 1,000 lbs hybrid
7/100
#15 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The gas CR-V is rated to tow 1,500 lbs and the hybrid 1,000 lbs, both near the bottom of the SUV band.

AWD/4WD availability58
#24 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Real-Time AWD with Intelligent Control is optional on every gas trim (LX/EX/EX-L) and on Sport/Sport-L hybrids, and standard on the Sport Touring Hybrid. It is a reactive on-demand system with a snow mode, but it has no torque vectoring, terrain suite or low range.

Off-road capability38
#12 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Pavement-oriented: 7.8 in (FWD) / 8.2 in (AWD) of ground clearance and AWD for snow and gravel roads, but no skid plates, all-terrain tires or terrain modes. The TrailSport trim did not arrive until MY2026.

Powertrain lineup breadth62
#6 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

There are two mainstream powertrains, the 1.5T gas and the 2.0L two-motor hybrid, each with FWD or AWD. There is no PHEV or EV for 2024 (the e:FCEV fuel-cell plug-in arrived for MY2025).

2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.26C

NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4★ frontal, 5★ side, 4★ rollover)
100/100
#1 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA rated the 2024 CR-V 5 stars overall. 2024 is the second year of the sixth generation (2023–) and a carry-over year for the structure, so the 4-star frontal (5★ driver / 4★ passenger) and 4-star rollover sub-ratings stand.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness66
#14 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2024 CR-V earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick, not TSP+. Small overlap (both sides), original moderate overlap and the updated side test are all Good, but the updated moderate overlap test is Poor because of rear-passenger protection, and whiplash protection is only Acceptable.

Standard ADAS suite breadth80
#16 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Honda Sensing is standard on every 2024 CR-V: Collision Mitigation Braking with pedestrian detection, ACC with Low-Speed Follow, Lane Keeping Assist, Road Departure Mitigation, Traffic Sign Recognition and auto high beams. Blind Spot Information and Cross Traffic Monitor are standard from the EX, the gas volume trim, but missing on the base LX.

Automatic emergency braking performance64
#12 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the standard Collision Mitigation Braking System Acceptable in both the vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test and the pedestrian test. It works, but it falls short of the Good ratings that the best rivals earn.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage62
#21 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Blind Spot Information and Cross Traffic Monitor are standard from the EX volume trim up, but they are absent on the base LX and only give alerts, with no active steering or braking.

Lane keeping & centering68
#13 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The standard Lane Keeping Assist centers the car on marked highways, and reviewers find it competent. It can wander a little and disengages on faded lane markings.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist66
#19 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow is standard and handles stop-and-go traffic. Paired with LKAS it works as a basic highway assist, though reviewers note it is sometimes slow to resume and there is no branded highway-assist package.

Hands-free driving availability10
#13 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

No 2024 CR-V trim offers hands-free highway driving; the driver must keep their hands on the wheel.

Headlight performance84
#7 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the LED reflector headlights Good on every trim, with standard high-beam assist, so the volume trim gets the same top-rated lighting as the most expensive one. Curve-adaptive lighting is not offered.

Outward visibility72
#6 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

A tall greenhouse, slim A-pillars and a low cowl give better-than-average natural sightlines for the class. A rearview camera is standard, but no 360-degree camera is offered on the gas trims.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability70
#17 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable: full LATCH hardware in the two outboard rear seats, with accessible lower anchors, plus a tether-only center seat that can borrow the inner anchors. The roomy rear seat and wide rear doors make rear-facing seats easy to fit.

4Space & ComfortOne of the CR-V's weakest categories.1.49D
Seating capacity
5 seats (all trims)
25/100
#2 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Two-row, five-passenger compact SUV. No third-row option is offered in the US.

Front headroom
38.2 in (EX and up, with moonroof); 40.0 in LX
24/100
#25 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The volume gas EX has the one-touch power moonroof, which cuts front headroom to 38.2 in. Only the moonroof-less LX gets 40.0 in.

Front legroom
41.3 in (all trims)
29/100
#16 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is about average for a compact SUV.

Rear headroom
38.2 in (all trims)
55/100
#18 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Rear headroom is mid-pack for the segment.

Rear legroom
41.0 in (all trims)
92/100
#3 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

At 41.0 in, rear legroom is among the best in the compact SUV class and rivals mid-size two-rows.

Third-row usability20
#3 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Two-row only. No 2024 US CR-V trim has a third row (7-seat versions are sold only in other markets).

Cargo/trunk volume
39.3 cu ft (gas LX/EX/EX-L); 36.3 Sport/Sport-L Hybrid; 34.7 Sport Touring Hybrid
26/100
#2 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The gas trims carry the lineup's biggest cargo hold, near the top of the compact class. The band also spans large SUVs, so the score reads low.

Max cargo volume
76.5 cu ft (all trims, rear seats folded)
48/100
#2 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Generous maximum cargo for a compact SUV.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions70
#3 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Practical everyday storage: a large center console, a dash shelf and a low, wide load floor. There is no household AC outlet or other standout trick, only 12-volt outlets in the console and cargo area.

Seat comfort70
#10 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Supportive front seats, and the EX gets a 10-way power driver seat with power lumbar. The reclining rear bench has very generous legroom. Some testers find the cushions flat and the EX's cloth plain.

Ride quality76
#2 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Firm but absorbent, with good body control. One of the more composed rides in the class; the chassis is unchanged from 2023.

Cabin quietness52
#20 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Road noise at highway speeds is a long-running CR-V complaint, and the gas 1.5T/CVT drones under hard throttle.

Climate & comfort features60
#17 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The EX adds heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate, and rear vents are fitted. The heated steering wheel is Sport Touring only, and no trim offers ventilated or heated rear seats.

5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.51C+
Base MSRP
$30,825 (LX 2WD $29,500 + $1,325 destination)
85/100
#13 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Honda's official 2024 pricing lists the gas LX 2WD at $29,500 plus a $1,325 destination charge, a competitive entry price for a mainstream compact SUV.

Volume-Trim Price
$35,985 (EX-L 2WD incl. destination; $37,485 AWD)
78/100
#12 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The EX-L is the volume gas trim; 2024 MSRP is $34,660 (2WD) plus $1,325 destination, at the top of the gas ladder (LX $29,500, EX $32,010) below the hybrid Sport-L and Sport Touring.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$5,680 over 5 years (Edmunds: $4,880 maintenance + $802 repairs, EX-L AWD)
59/100
#16 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Edmunds projects $4,880 in maintenance and $802 in repairs over five years for the gas EX-L AWD, low repair costs reflecting Honda's reliability record. That is a single source, and KBB's projection for the 2025 model ran higher (about $8,000).

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~66% retained after 5 years (Edmunds-implied ~73% EX-L AWD; CarEdge ~71%; KBB 2025 projection ~55%)
87/100
#2 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Edmunds projects only $10,249 of depreciation on the ~$37,485 EX-L AWD (~73% retained) and CarEdge puts CR-V 5-year depreciation at 29%. KBB's more conservative projection for the near-identical 2025 model was ~55%, so a blended ~66% is used. Either way the CR-V retains value well above the compact-SUV norm.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
0/100
#9 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Honda's New-Vehicle Limited Warranty is the industry-baseline 3 years / 36,000 miles, behind Hyundai/Kia's 5 yr / 60k.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain
0/100
#12 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The Powertrain Limited Warranty is 5 years / 60,000 miles on the gas 1.5T, half the length of Hyundai/Kia/Mitsubishi's 10 yr / 100k coverage.

Complimentary maintenance & perks62
#12 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Select 2024 Honda models came with Honda Service Pass covering scheduled maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, inspections) for up to 2 years / 24,000 miles, later cut to 1 yr / 12k for 2025. Roadside assistance is included during the 3-year basic warranty. That is roughly on par with ToyotaCare's 2 yr / 25k, with no further perks.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$17,917 (≈$12,235 depreciation + $5,682 maintenance)
82/100
#4 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

$35,985 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (66% retained, or about $23,750) leaves about $12,235 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,682 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $17,917 in total.

6Reliability & QualityThe CR-V's best-graded category.2.89B-
Predicted reliability77
#6 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

2024 is the second year of the sixth-generation CR-V (2023–) and carries over from 2023. Outside predictions put it at good, but not top-tier, reliability: J.D. Power rates its quality and reliability 'Great' and Consumer Reports calls it more reliable than the average 2024 model.

Brand reliability track record73
#9 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Honda is a reliable brand that ranks mid-to-upper pack in recent dependability studies. It sits behind Lexus and Toyota and is not consistently top-five, but it beats most non-Japanese mainstream brands.

Recall & TSB history64
#13 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The scored gas 2024 CR-V is lighter on recalls than the hybrid. The only major campaign is the generation-wide steering-gearbox recall for 'sticky' steering, which is a common owner complaint. The fuel-pump and tire-repair-kit recalls apply only to the CR-V Hybrid, and the remaining recall is a small tire-marking fix.

Powertrain durability reputation73
#5 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The gas volume trims use the 1.5L turbo-four with a CVT, a pairing the CR-V has used since 2017 and one with a good high-mileage record. Early cars (2017–2018) suffered oil dilution, which Honda's later updates largely fixed, and the 2024 gas engine is not part of the hybrid fuel-pump recall.

Interior material quality62
#16 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Materials are competitive for the price but not class-leading. Reviewers note a fair amount of hard plastic, masked by well-placed soft surfaces and solid switchgear.

Fit & finish70
#11 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Assembly is generally tight, and reviewers note the lack of rattles. Scattered owner complaints about lower interior trim panels keep it at the upper end of average.

Dealer & service network76
#7 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Honda has one of the densest mainstream dealer networks in the US, and service satisfaction is average to above average for a mass-market brand.

Parts availability & repair cost78
#5 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

As one of America's best-selling SUVs, the CR-V has cheap, plentiful OEM parts and a huge aftermarket, and its repair costs run below the segment average.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the CR-V's weakest categories.1.19D
Touchscreen size
7 in (LX/EX/Sport Hybrid); 9 in (EX-L, Sport-L, Sport Touring)
0/100
#23 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The volume gas EX keeps the small 7-in screen. 9 in is the largest on any 2024 trim.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness62
#16 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Simple, logical interface with a volume knob and physical climate controls. The 7-in unit on the EX looks small and dated next to rivals' 10–12 in screens.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto55
#20 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Wired CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Wireless projection comes only with the 9-in screen on EX-L and up, so the volume EX is wired.

Voice control & native navigation48
#21 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The EX has no native navigation (Sport Touring only). Basic voice recognition is mostly bypassed in favor of phone projection.

Audio system quality58
#21 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The EX has a 6-speaker, 240-watt system. The 12-speaker Bose system is limited to the Sport Touring Hybrid.

The EX pairs a 7-in digital cluster screen with an analog speedometer. The fully digital 10.2-in cluster is Sport Touring only.

Kid & car-seat practicality80
#1 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 41-in rear legroom and nearly 90-degree rear door openings make car seats easy to fit, and the low cargo floor takes strollers easily. IIHS rates LATCH Acceptable.

Family safety package76
#11 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Honda Sensing (AEB, ACC with low-speed follow, lane-keeping) and a rear seat reminder are standard, and blind-spot/cross-traffic arrive at EX. It is an IIHS Top Safety Pick with a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, but the updated moderate-overlap test, which measures rear-seat protection, is rated Poor.

Family road-trip comfort70
#6 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Big rear legroom, a reclining rear seatback, rear vents, two rear USB-C ports and a large cargo hold suit long trips. Road noise and the lack of rear-seat entertainment or rear heated seats hold it back.

Daily driving ease74
#10 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Light controls, good outward visibility and standard ACC with low-speed follow make it an easy commuter. The gas turbo/CVT can hesitate slightly at tip-in.

Commuting cost efficiency62
#14 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

29 MPG combined (AWD 1.5T; FWD 30) on regular fuel is about average for a gas compact SUV. The hybrid is the efficiency pick.

Parking & maneuverability72
#9 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The compact footprint and 37.3-ft turning circle make it easy to manage in town. The EX has no parking sensors and no trim has a 360-degree camera.

Work capability30
#16 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The gas CR-V tows 1,500 lbs (1,000 lbs on the hybrids). Fine for light hauling in the cargo bay, not real work duty.

Durability for work duty58
#4 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Proven nameplate reputation, but the cloth/leather-trimmed cabin and small turbo are not built for hard use.

Jobsite & upfit practicality35
#14 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Cargo tie-down hooks and 12-volt outlets, with a hitch and roof rack available as accessories. No onboard AC power or other work-oriented features.

Long-distance comfort & range67
#15 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

A comfortable highway cruiser with standard ACC and lane-keeping and about 400 miles of range. Road noise is the endurance limit.

Outdoor & adventure capability55
#14 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Real Time AWD and 8.2 in of AWD ground clearance handle gravel and snow. Tow capacity is modest, and the off-road TrailSport did not arrive until MY2026.

Gear & luggage flexibility68
#5 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 60/40 rear seat folds nearly flat for 76.5 cu ft over a low, wide cargo floor. Roof rails and a hitch are accessories on the gas EX.

Standard equipment generosity63
#22 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Every 2024 CR-V gets the full Honda Sensing suite (AEB, adaptive cruise, lane-keeping, road-departure mitigation). But the LX has a 7-inch screen with wired CarPlay/Android Auto and lacks blind-spot monitoring, which Hyundai/Kia rivals include at similar money. The 9-inch screen and wireless mirroring wait for the EX.

Feature value per dollar66
#13 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Fair-to-good value. The CR-V's roomy cabin, build quality and strong resale justify a mid-pack price, and the volume EX-L at $35,985 delivered is competitive. Tucson and Sportage give more equipment per dollar, and the efficient hybrid requires stepping to the $33,700 Sport.

Trim & configuration breadth72
#9 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Six trims from $29,500 to $39,850 across two powertrains: the 1.5T gas on LX/EX/EX-L and the two-motor hybrid on Sport, the new-for-2024 Sport-L, and Sport Touring. FWD or AWD is offered on all but the AWD-only Sport Touring. The hard gas/hybrid split limits mix-and-match, and there is no off-road trim.

Sales popularity & market acceptance90
#2 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

A record 402,791 US sales in calendar 2024, the first year above 400,000, made the CR-V America's No. 2 SUV behind only the RAV4, with the hybrid share climbing fast.

Brand desirability & image78
#2 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Honda carries strong mainstream equity for engineering, reliability and resale, with a loyal repeat-buyer base. It is not aspirational in a luxury sense, but the CR-V nameplate is a first-stop benchmark in the segment.

Deals & incentive availability64
#23 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Honda runs few cash rebates, but during the 2024 model year it supported the CR-V with captive lease cash and subvented APR offers. That is a real buyer benefit, short of fire-sale pricing, on a model that sold at or near MSRP early in the generation.

Model freshness76
#5 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

2024 is the second model year of the sixth generation, which launched for MY2023 on the Honda Architecture platform shared with the 11th-gen Civic. It adds the Sport-L hybrid trim, and its mid-cycle refresh did not arrive until 2026, so a 2024 buyer gets a current platform.

Critical reception & awards77
#5 of 25 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Consistently well reviewed: an IIHS Top Safety Pick under the tougher 2024 criteria, a repeat Car and Driver 10Best Trucks and SUVs nameplate, and frequently named a best compact SUV. It is a top choice rather than a runaway comparison-test winner.
