The verdict
A struggling mid-size suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The 2020 Honda Pilot is a roomy, comfortable eight-seat family hauler with a smooth 280-hp V6, a 5-star NHTSA rating, an IIHS Top Safety Pick and some of the best outward visibility in its class. It was showing its age in 2020, though. An 8-inch screen with wired-only CarPlay, 22 mpg combined, Honda's short 3-year/5-year warranty and a long recall list (including a 2026 rear-subframe corrosion campaign) put it behind the all-new Telluride and Palisade. As a used buy it makes sense for families who value ride comfort and space, ideally an EX-L with the simpler 6-speed, and only once you've confirmed every open recall has been done.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Pilot's weakest categories.1.08D
2020 is a carry-over year within the facelifted third generation (2016–2022, refreshed for 2019); every trim from LX through the new Black Edition uses the same 3.5L SOHC i-VTEC V6.
Peak torque is unchanged for 2020 at 262 lb-ft across the range.
The volume EX-L uses the 6-speed automatic, for which the best available figure is a professional performance estimate rather than a magazine instrumented test; instrumented tests of the quicker 9-speed upper trims (Car and Driver: 6.2 s Black Edition; Edmunds: 7.0 s Elite) bracket the same V6/AWD powertrain.
Reviewers consistently describe the 3.5L V6 as smooth, strong, and refined with no turbo lag or coarseness, and several note it feels stronger than its 280-hp rating suggests.
The volume EX-L's 6-speed automatic shifts smoothly and predictably with no major complaints. The optional 9-speed ZF unit on Touring/Elite/Black Edition — not the trim being scored — draws frequent owner reports of hesitation and rough low-speed shifting, so shoppers are often steered toward the simpler 6-speed.
An AWD Pilot reaches the category's maximum rating of 5,000 lbs with the Honda towing kit; front-drive models are limited to 3,500 lbs.
Honda's i-VTM4 torque-vectoring AWD, with Intelligent Traction Management drive modes (Normal/Snow/Mud/Sand), is optional on LX through Touring and standard only on Elite and the new Black Edition — sophisticated hardware, but not standard on the volume EX-L trim.
The 2020 Pilot is pavement-oriented: 7.3 in ground clearance, no skid plates, locking differential, or hill descent control, and no dedicated off-road trim — Honda's TrailSport off-road package did not arrive until the 2022 model year.
A single powertrain — the 3.5L V6 paired with either a 6-speed or 9-speed automatic — covers the entire 2020 Pilot range. No turbo, hybrid, PHEV, or EV variant exists for this generation.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Pilot's lowest-graded category.0.83F
EPA combined rating for the volume EX-L with the standard 6-speed automatic is 22 MPG FWD; the AWD version of the same transmission is rated 1 MPG lower. The optional 9-speed (Touring/Elite/Black Edition) rates slightly higher but is not the trim scored.
EPA city rating for the volume FWD EX-L (6-speed) is 19 MPG; AWD with the same transmission is rated 18 MPG city.
EPA highway rating for the volume FWD EX-L (6-speed) is 27 MPG; AWD with the same transmission is rated 26 MPG highway.
EPA-derived range for the volume FWD EX-L from its 19.5-gallon tank and 22 combined MPG rating is 429 miles; the AWD 6-speed version is rated slightly lower at roughly 410 miles.
EPA's standard 15,000 mi/yr estimate for the volume FWD EX-L (6-speed, 22 combined MPG) is $3,050/yr; the AWD version at 21 combined MPG runs slightly higher at $3,200/yr.
The 3.5L V6 runs on regular unleaded across every 2020 trim, with no premium recommendation even on upper trims.
3SafetyThe Pilot's best-graded category.2.73B-
NHTSA awarded the 2020 Pilot its maximum 5-star overall rating, with 4 stars frontal and 5 stars side.
Earned IIHS Top Safety Pick (not Pick+) on the strength of mostly Good crashworthiness and Advanced front crash prevention, but the passenger-side small overlap test and the newer updated-side test kept it short of the top tier.
Honda Sensing (AEB/CMBS, adaptive cruise, lane keeping assist, road departure mitigation) is standard on every 2020 Pilot trim including base LX, and the volume EX-L trim adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, giving the volume trim the full comprehensive suite.
IIHS rated vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention Advanced (avoided the 12 mph test, cut 12 mph off the 25 mph test) but gave the daytime pedestrian test No Credit, so the system is solid against other vehicles but weak on pedestrian detection.
Blind Spot Information System and rear cross-traffic alert are standard from EX trim up, covering the volume EX-L, but they are alert-only with no active steering or braking intervention.
Lane keeping assist and road departure mitigation function on every trim but reviewers describe the system as intrusive in long, constant-radius corners and less refined than rival systems like Toyota Safety Sense 2.0.
Adaptive cruise control only engages above roughly 20 mph with no true stop-and-go/low-speed follow, and reviewers call the braking behavior overly sensitive and aggressive compared with competing systems.
No hands-free highway driving system (no BlueCruise/Super Cruise/FSD-equivalent) was offered on the 2020 Pilot at any trim.
IIHS rated the volume LX/EX/EX-L headlights (LED projector low beam, halogen reflector high beam) only Acceptable; full LED reflector headlights on Touring/Elite/Black Edition rated Good.
Reviewers consistently praise the Pilot's expansive glass area, thin windshield pillars, low dash and large mirrors, citing it as tied for best-in-class outward visibility.
IIHS rated the LATCH anchors Acceptable overall with good ease-of-use at multiple seating positions — workable but not class-leading for car-seat installation.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Pilot's strongest categories.2.63C+
LX through EX-L Navi/RES and Touring 8P use a second-row bench for eight seats; Elite and the new-for-2020 Black Edition use second-row captain's chairs for seven.
Carry-over 2016–2022 third-generation body; the published no-moonroof figure is used per the item definition.
Unchanged across all trims and across the 2019–2021 model years of this generation.
Generous second-row headroom, at the top of the SUV band.
Competitive adult-sized second row with fore/aft slide; not class-leading versus newer rivals.
31.9 in of third-row legroom and 38.9 in of headroom with one-touch second-row access (EX and up) make it fine for kids and adults on short trips, but the low cushion and snug width limit adult comfort over distance.
Behind-second-row figure per the item definition; generous and well shaped but mid-pack for three-row mid-size SUVs.
Second and third rows fold flat for strong maximum capacity.
A very large center console that swallows a purse or tablet, plentiful bins and cupholders, an under-floor cargo well and a reversible cargo floor make it a practical cabin, short of standout innovation like a bridge console with power outlets everywhere.
Front and second-row seats are roomy and supportive for long drives, with heated fronts from EX up for 2020; the low, flat third-row cushion keeps the cabin out of the top band.
Suspension soaks up bumps and stays composed, among the best in the class; the 20-inch wheels on Touring/Elite add sharper impacts.
Active noise cancellation is standard and an acoustic windshield arrives on EX-L, so wind noise is low, but reviewers and owners report noticeable tire roar on coarse or grooved pavement.
Tri-zone automatic climate with rear controls, remote start and heated front seats come from EX up and integrated 2nd-row sunshades from EX-L, but ventilated fronts, a heated wheel and heated 2nd-row seats are Elite/Black Edition only.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.16D
Entry LX 2WD pricing for the 2020 model year, the last full year before the 2021 refresh added the Special Edition trim; competitive with Telluride/Palisade base pricing.
EX-L was the most common 2020 Pilot trim (per CARFAX/Edmunds listing mix), with AWD the typical configuration; the lineup runs from LX 2WD $32,770 to Black Edition AWD $50,840.
A 5-year total-cost-of-ownership model for the 3rd-generation Pilot on a $41,500 purchase projects $4,750 in maintenance; RepairPal's average annual repair cost (~$542/yr, frequency above average) adds roughly $2,750 more over the same span, moderate-to-high for a V6 three-row SUV.
Industry 5-year residual estimates for the 2020 Pilot cluster around 52% of original value retained (about 48% depreciation), solid for a mainstream three-row but below Honda's own CR-V/Accord retention and behind the Telluride.
Industry-baseline bumper-to-bumper coverage, unchanged across Honda model years and behind Kia/Hyundai's 5 yr / 60k mi.
Industry-floor powertrain coverage, half the length of Korean rivals' 10 yr / 100k mi terms.
No complimentary scheduled maintenance program on the 2020 Pilot; coverage is limited to 3 yr / 36,000 mi 24-hour roadside assistance, behind ToyotaCare's included 2-year maintenance offered by Highlander rivals.
$41,080 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (52% retained, or about $21,362) leaves about $19,718 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $27,218 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.83C-
The 2020 Pilot carries over the third-generation's 3.5L V6/9-speed powertrain (facelifted for MY2019) with no major change for 2020. Consumer Reports rates the 2020 Pilot as less reliable than other 2020-model-year vehicles, driven largely by infotainment/electronics complaints, while J.D. Power's Quality & Reliability component sits at 71/100 (Average).
Honda is a historically dependable mainstream brand but has not been a top-5 finisher in recent J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Studies — the 2023 VDS (which measured MY2020 vehicles after 3 years of ownership) put Korean and Lexus/Toyota brands ahead of Honda industry-wide. Solidly mid-to-upper pack, not class-leading.
NHTSA's feed shows 11 recall campaigns reaching the 2020 Pilot, including two safety-critical structural campaigns: a 2026 rear-subframe-bolt recall and a much larger 2026 rear-subframe-corrosion recall (880,514 units across 2016-2022 Pilot/2014-2020 MDX and siblings) warning of possible rear suspension detachment, plus a front-passenger airbag sensor recall that can cause unintended deployment. Earlier 2019-2020 campaigns covered front frame upper-member cracking, backup-camera/instrument-panel software faults, a mislabeled certification sticker, and a Continental tire issue. This is heavy, and includes genuinely serious structural/safety defects, not just minor paperwork fixes.
The 3.5L J35 V6 is a long-proven, high-mileage-capable Honda design. The pairing 9-speed ZF-derived automatic introduced for this generation (and shared with Odyssey/Ridgeline/Passport/Acura siblings) has a well-documented history of rough/hard upshifts and torque-converter judder under light throttle, confirmed by Honda's own service bulletin (20-029) and an active class-action lawsuit covering 2016-2022 Pilots. The engine side is strong; the transmission side keeps this out of the top band.
Reviewers describe the cabin as well-assembled with soft-touch plastics on the dash and upper door panels on EX-L and above, competitive for a mainstream three-row, but the base LX trim is noted as noticeably plainer with more hard plastic.
Exterior panel fit, paint and trim are rated solid by reviewers, but the volume of electronics-related campaigns and owner complaints (backup-camera/instrument-cluster software, infotainment connections cutting out) and the known 9-speed shift-quality issue point to inconsistent initial build/calibration quality rather than best-in-class assembly.
Honda runs one of the densest mainstream dealer networks in the US, with roughly 1,000 franchised dealers nationwide, and service satisfaction that runs average-to-above-average for a mass-market brand.
As a high-volume three-row SUV sharing its platform and drivetrain with the Odyssey, Ridgeline, Passport and Acura MDX, the Pilot has plentiful OEM and aftermarket parts and below-average annual repair costs, though frequency of shop visits runs a bit higher than average per RepairPal.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Pilot's weakest categories.1.13D
The volume EX-L uses the 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen; it is the largest center screen offered on any 2020 trim.
The 2019-refreshed system kept a physical volume knob and simpler menus and is broadly easy to use, but its graphics and touch-only home/back controls feel dated, and owners report static and reboot glitches.
Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on EX and above; absent on LX, and no wireless projection on any 2020 trim.
Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation with command-style voice recognition is offered only from EX-L Navi/RES up; the volume EX-L relies on phone projection for maps and voice.
The volume trim's 215-watt 7-speaker system with subwoofer is adequate; Touring and up get a stronger unbranded 590-watt 10-speaker premium system.
A 7-inch customizable digital Driver Information Interface with digital tachometer has been standard on every trim since the 2019 refresh; useful but small and visually basic.
Display Audio software can be updated via Wi-Fi, and connected Touring/Elite units receive infotainment fixes over the air; there is no whole-vehicle OTA.
HondaLink app support exists from EX up, but the rich remote suite (remote start/lock, find my car, geofence) is subscription-gated and limited to telematics-equipped Touring/Elite/Black Edition; no digital key.
The EX-L has two front 2.5A USB-A ports plus two second-row charge-only USB ports; a 115V outlet arrives with EX-L Navi/RES and wireless charging only on Elite/Black Edition. No USB-C, no third-row ports.
Smart Entry with walk-away auto lock and remote engine start from EX up, power tailgate from EX-L, hands-free tailgate on Touring and above; no phone-as-key, and LX lacks proximity entry.
A multi-angle rear camera is standard, but front/rear parking sensors are Touring-and-up only and no surround-view camera or parking automation is offered.
No head-up display was offered on any 2020 Pilot trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.28C
Eight seats, large rear door openings, a one-touch sliding second row (EX and up) and generous behind-third-row space make family logistics easy; LATCH is only rated Acceptable by IIHS and the third row is tight for three car seats.
Honda Sensing is standard on every trim, blind-spot monitoring starts at EX, and the Pilot earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick, but the updated side test is Marginal, base headlights are only Acceptable, pedestrian AEB earned no credit and there is no rear-seat reminder.
Tri-zone climate with rear controls, second-row sunshades and a smooth, comfortable ride suit long family trips, with a Blu-ray rear entertainment system available; third-row comfort and luggage space with all rows up are only moderate.
Light controls, excellent visibility and a smooth V6 with the volume trims' six-speed make it easy to live with; adaptive cruise that cuts out below about 20 mph and an intrusive lane-keep system add minor annoyances.
About 22 mpg combined for the AWD six-speed EX-L on regular fuel is average for a V6 three-row SUV; Honda maintenance costs are reasonable.
Superb sightlines help, but a 196.5-in body and 39.4-ft turning circle with only a rear camera on the volume trim (sensors Touring and up, no 360 view) make tight parking a manage-with-care job.
A 5,000-lb tow rating on AWD (3,500 lb FWD) and 83.9 cu ft of flat cargo space handle light-to-moderate duty, but this is a unibody family crossover rather than a work tool.
The 3.5L V6 is a proven, long-lived engine and the six-speed is well regarded, but the cloth/leather family interior and the upper trims' nine-speed's mixed reputation make it unproven for hard use.
Cargo tie-downs, a reversible floor and an accessory hitch exist, and a 115V outlet comes on EX-L Navi/RES and up, but there is little work-oriented equipment or upfit ecosystem.
A compliant ride, supportive front seats and standard adaptive cruise make it a good tourer, and a 19.5-gal tank gives ~430 miles of highway-adjusted range; tire noise on coarse pavement and a stop-and-go-limited ACC hold it back.
i-VTM4 torque-vectoring AWD with Snow/Mud/Sand modes and a 5,000-lb tow rating handle gravel roads and campers well, but 7.3 in of clearance and no hill descent control limit it off-pavement.
Flat-folding 60/40 second and third rows, 83.9 cu ft maximum, an under-floor well and standard roof rails (EX and up) swallow bulky gear; a hitch is accessory-only.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Pilot's strongest categories.2.35C+
Feels lighter than most three-row crossovers on twisty roads with good resistance to body lean, but reviewers split, with Consumer Reports calling it ungainly and unable to hide its bulk.
Precise and light but nearly devoid of road feel; Consumer Reports found it vague enough to chip away at confidence.
Consistent, easy-to-modulate pedal in everyday use, but a 129-ft 60–0 stop is only average and Consumer Reports found wet braking trails most peers.
The volume EX-L's 280-hp V6 and six-speed are smooth and predictable, if slow to downshift; Touring and above get the nine-speed with idle-stop, which still draws complaints of uneven shifts and an unintuitive push-button selector.
Honda's naturally aspirated V6 is well isolated at cruise and has a pleasant, sporty note when worked; idle-stop on upper trims adds some restart shudder.
Carry-over third-generation figure, toward the wide end of the SUV band.
Commanding seating, wide adjustment, tall glass with slim pillars and simple climate controls plus the restored volume knob make it very easy to operate; the push-button shifter on nine-speed trims and touch-only infotainment shortcuts detract slightly.
A willing V6 and lighter-than-expected feel make it pleasant, but numb steering and family-first tuning keep it an appliance-adjacent choice for enthusiasts.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.70C-
Every 2020 Pilot gets Honda Sensing (AEB, ACC, lane keeping, road departure mitigation) standard post-2019 refresh, plus the 280-hp V6, but the LX still has cloth seats and a small 5-inch non-touch display; Telluride LX and Palisade SE match or exceed that content for similar money.
Roomy eight-seat packaging and a smooth, quick V6 (Edmunds-tested 7.0-sec 0-60 on the Elite) give reasonable content for the money, but the all-new-for-2020 Telluride and Palisade offer more modern interiors and tech at comparable prices, eroding the Pilot's value case.
Seven named trims (LX, EX, EX-L, EX-L w/Navi & RES, Touring, Touring w/Captain's Chairs, Elite, plus the new-for-2020 Black Edition) spanning $32,770-$50,840, most offered in both 2WD and AWD; only one powertrain across the range.
The Pilot sold 123,813 units in calendar 2020, down 8.3% from 135,008 in 2019, as the segment was reshaped by the all-new Telluride and Palisade and overall Honda volume slumped amid COVID-19; still a solid mid-pack seller but losing share rather than gaining it.
Honda's reputation for reliability, resale and owner loyalty gives the Pilot a trusted family-SUV halo, though it lacks the style-driven buzz the brand-new Telluride and Palisade generated in 2020.
Honda ran leaner incentives than Detroit or Korean rivals through most of 2020; COVID-19 did prompt dealer cash and financing offers mid-year, with Honda's first-ever 0% APR deals arriving on Pilot by late 2020/early 2021, so late-2020 buyers saw modestly better terms than a typical year.
2020 is year four of the third generation (introduced for 2016) and the year after a 2019 mid-cycle refresh (new fascias, standard Honda Sensing, wider 9-speed availability) — current but aging, and overshadowed by the ground-up-new 2020 Telluride, Palisade and Explorer it was cross-shopped against.
The 2020 Pilot finished last of seven in Cars.com's 2020 Three-Row SUV Challenge against the all-new Telluride, Palisade, Explorer and others, and Edmunds/Cars.com reviews frame it as capable but dated; it does carry an IIHS Top Safety Pick and 5-star NHTSA rating, but those are safety distinctions rather than comparison-test wins.
