The verdict
A struggling subcompact suv, strong on ownership and held back by performance.
The 2020 Kona is a cheap-to-own subcompact crossover. It starts around $21,400 delivered, carries Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, returns 30 MPG combined and handles like a hatchback. The trade-off is space: a 34.6-inch back seat and a 19.2 cu ft cargo hold are among the smallest in the class. The volume 147-hp engine is slow (about 9 seconds to 60 mph) and is covered by a piston-ring recall. It suits singles and couples who mostly drive in the city, not growing families.
Jump to scoresStrengths

- Strong crash-test results
- Good fuel economy on regular gas
What holds it back
- Cramped back seat and small cargo hold

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Kona's lowest-graded category.0.00F
On the volume SE, SEL and SEL Plus trims of the pre-facelift 2020 Kona, the engine is a 2.0L naturally aspirated four making 147 hp. The 175-hp 1.6T is limited to the Limited and Ultimate trims.
The 2.0L makes 132 lb-ft, which peaks high in the rev range. The optional turbo's 195 lb-ft arrives from low rpm.
The 2.0L/6-speed powertrain is unchanged for 2018–2021. It was instrumented at 8.3 s (MotorTrend, FWD SE) and 9.2 s (Car and Driver, AWD SEL), so ~9.0 s represents the volume trim.
The base 2.0L is adequate around town but gets loud and strained when merging or passing. The 1.6T is punchy and much stronger, but its DCT pairing adds low-speed hesitation. About average for the class.
Unlike the CVTs in most rivals, the volume trims use a conventional 6-speed automatic. Reviewers praised it as smooth and natural-feeling. The turbo trims' 7-speed dry DCT can be jerky and hesitant at crawling speeds.
Hyundai publishes no US tow rating for the first-generation Kona, and the US owner's manual does not recommend trailer towing. It scores zero on capability.
HTRAC AWD is optional with both gas engines across the gas trim range. It is a basic, front-biased on-demand system with a lock mode, with no low range or torque vectoring. The Kona Electric is FWD only.
This is a pavement-oriented subcompact crossover with about 6.7 in of ground clearance and no skid plates, locker, crawl control or off-road trim. The AWD lock mode helps only on slippery roads.
The 2020 Kona offers three distinct US powertrains: the 2.0L, the 175-hp 1.6T and the 201-hp Kona Electric. That is broad for a subcompact, but there is no hybrid, and the Kona N did not arrive until 2022.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Kona's strongest categories.2.47C+
The volume 2.0L FWD with the 6-speed automatic is rated 30 MPG combined, which is good for a gas subcompact SUV. AWD costs 2 MPG.
This is the EPA city rating for the volume 2.0L FWD configuration.
This is the EPA highway rating for the volume 2.0L FWD configuration.
Total range is the EPA combined figure multiplied by the 13.2-gallon tank. The small tank holds range below the class norm despite decent economy.
This is the EPA annual fuel cost estimate at current standard assumptions for the volume 2.0L FWD on regular fuel.
Every 2020 gas Kona, including the 2.0L and the 1.6T, runs on regular unleaded. There is no premium-fuel trim in this model year.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.82C-
NHTSA rated the 2020 Kona 5 stars overall, with 5-star frontal and side results and 4 stars for rollover. That ties the top of the subcompact class.
Every IIHS crashworthiness test came back Good, including both small-overlap tests, and the 2020 Kona earned a Top Safety Pick (not TSP+). The award applies only with the optional pedestrian-capable AEB and the LED headlights from the Limited and Ultimate trims, so the volume SEL as sold does not qualify.
SmartSense's forward collision-avoidance assist (car detection only), lane keeping assist and driver attention warning are standard on every trim. Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warnings start at the volume SEL, but adaptive cruise and pedestrian-detecting AEB are confined to the top Ultimate trim.
The optional system earns IIHS's Superior rating for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, and its pedestrian detection rated Advanced in the daytime test. However, the standard car-only system the volume SEL carries was not tested, pedestrian detection is limited to the Ultimate, and there is no nighttime pedestrian rating.
Blind-spot collision warning and rear cross-traffic collision warning are standard from the volume SEL up, but the base SE lacks them. Both systems only warn, with no active blind-spot intervention or Safe Exit Assist in the 2020 lineup.
Lane Keeping Assist and lane departure warning are standard on every trim, but the 2020 car offers edge-of-lane nudges only. True Lane Following Assist centering did not arrive until the 2022 refresh.
The SE, SEL, SEL Plus and Limited trims have only conventional cruise control. Smart Cruise Control is limited to the top Ultimate trim and has no paired lane-centering highway assist, so nearly all buyers go without adaptive cruise.
No hands-free driving system, and no lane-centering highway assist, is offered on any 2020 Kona trim.
The halogen headlights on the SE, SEL and SEL Plus, which include the volume trim, rate Poor. Only the LED projectors on the Limited and Ultimate rate Good.
The upright greenhouse and small footprint give decent forward sightlines. The thick C-pillars and small rear window limit the over-shoulder view, and no 360-degree camera is offered, only a rearview camera.
IIHS rates the Kona's LATCH Marginal: the lower anchors sit too deep in the seat and are hard to reach. The narrow subcompact rear bench makes fitting multiple car seats tight.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Kona's weakest categories.0.24F
Every 2020 Kona, from SE to Ultimate, is a two-row, five-seat crossover. No other seating layout is offered.
Front headroom is adequate for the class. The power sunroof, now standard from the new SEL Plus up, takes away about 1.6 inches.
Front legroom is on the short side for an SUV, but the driving position still fits most adults.
Rear headroom is reasonable on paper, but the sloping roofline makes it feel tighter for tall passengers.
At 34.6 inches, the pre-facelift Kona's back seat is among the tightest in the subcompact class. Adults fit for short trips only.
No third row is offered on any trim. The Kona is strictly a two-row, five-seat crossover.
Cargo space behind the rear seat is small for the class. The HR-V, Trax, Seltos and Crosstrek all hold more.
Even with the 60/40 rear seat folded, total cargo space trails most subcompact rivals.
Door pockets, a modest console bin, a tray ahead of the shifter and a split-level cargo floor from the SEL are typical for the class. For 2020 the wireless charging pad moved down from the Ultimate to the SEL Plus, but there are no standout storage solutions.
The front seats are supportive enough for daily driving, but the volume SEL's driver's seat is manual. The 8-way power seat with lumbar comes on the new SEL Plus, and the rear bench is upright and short on thigh support.
The ride is firm and gets busy over broken pavement, especially on FWD models with the torsion-beam rear. Body control is good, and AWD models with the multi-link rear ride somewhat better.
Road and tire noise come through clearly at highway speed, and the 2.0L gets loud under load. The 2020 still lacks the acoustic windshield and added insulation of the 2022 refresh.
Heated front seats are standard from the volume SEL up, which is good for the price. Automatic climate control waits for the Limited, and there is no heated steering wheel, ventilated seat or rear vent on any gas trim.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Kona's best-graded category.4.00A+
The 2020 Kona SE with the 147-hp 2.0L started a little over $21k delivered, at the bottom of the SUV band and among the cheapest subcompact crossovers that year.
The SEL is the volume trim, and AWD is the common configuration. That puts the typical Kona at about $24,600 delivered.
Running costs are low for the class. MY2020 is the first Kona year covered by Hyundai's 3-year/36,000-mile complimentary maintenance, which offsets early services. Edmunds' projection is much more conservative than CarEdge's, so I used a blended figure.
The gas Kona holds value at about the subcompact-SUV average, keeping roughly 55–61% of MSRP after five years depending on the source.
Hyundai Assurance's 5-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty is among the longest basic warranties in the mainstream market.
The 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage tops the band. It applies to the original owner only.
MY2020 introduced Hyundai Complimentary Maintenance: 3 years/36,000 miles of oil changes and tire rotations. It comes with 5 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a 3-year Blue Link Connected Care trial, which is more than most mainstream subcompact rivals include.
$24,620 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (58% retained, or about $14,280) leaves about $10,340 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,700 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $14,040 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.28C
The sources disagree. J.D. Power owner data rates the 2020 Kona's quality and reliability as "Great", but aggregated owner-complaint indexes put it below average. The volume 2.0L engine was also recalled for defective piston oil rings, so the overall signal is mixed and the item sits mid-band.
Around 2020 Hyundai was a mid-pack-to-above-average dependability brand in J.D. Power's VDS and mid-table in Consumer Reports' brand rankings, behind Lexus, Toyota and sister brand Kia. The Theta II engine-failure saga (recalls, class action, NHTSA consent order in 2020) weighed on its long-term record.
The gas 2020 Kona's significant campaign is a serious one on its volume engine: the 2.0L Nu MPI piston oil rings may be improperly heat-treated, which can cause engine damage, stalling and fire risk. The other gas recall is a minor certification-label fix; the battery and brake recalls are Kona Electric only. The key-start trims were also among the immobilizer-less Hyundais hit by the 2022–23 theft wave, and the fix was a service campaign rather than a recall.
The volume SE/SEL pair a 147-hp 2.0L Nu MPI with a conventional 6-speed automatic. The automatic is proven, but this engine family carries a recall for piston-ring defects and associated oil-consumption and engine-failure reports. Hyundai's fix includes piston-ring-noise detection software and an extended warranty. The 1.6T upper trims use a 7-speed dry DCT that drew low-speed hesitation complaints.
This is the pre-refresh first-generation cabin: a simple, sturdy layout, but the dash and doors are dominated by hard plastics with little soft-touch material. That is typical for a budget subcompact, and it trails the Mazda CX-30.
Assembly is generally solid in the third year of the generation, and J.D. Power's owner-based quality score is strong. Scattered owner reports of rattles and trim complaints keep it out of the top band.
Hyundai's roughly 800-store US franchised network gives dense national coverage. Service satisfaction is only average for a mass-market brand.
Parts for the high-volume first-generation Kona are abundant and cheap, and RepairPal puts repair costs well below average. The 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, plus the complimentary maintenance that began with the 2020 model year, covers much of early ownership.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Kona's weakest categories.0.88F
Every 2020 Kona below the Ultimate uses the 7-inch display audio touchscreen. The 8-inch navigation screen is Ultimate-only.
The 7-inch system is simple and quick, sits high on the dash, and is backed by physical volume and tuning knobs and a conventional climate panel. It is easy to live with but small next to rivals' 8-inch screens.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every trim, but only by USB cable. Wireless projection did not reach the US Kona until the 2022 facelift.
Built-in navigation is limited to the Ultimate's 8-inch unit. Volume SE/SEL buyers rely on phone projection for maps and natural voice control, with only basic built-in voice commands.
The volume trims' six-speaker system is adequate. The eight-speaker Infinity system with subwoofer is standard from the new SEL Plus, a lower trim than many rivals require for branded audio.
Every 2020 gas Kona uses analog gauges. The SE and SEL get a 3.5-inch monochrome info screen, and for 2020 the 4.2-inch color display moved down from the Ultimate to the SEL Plus. A fully digital cluster did not arrive until 2022.
The 2020 Kona has no over-the-air vehicle or infotainment updates. Map updates on the Ultimate's navigation unit are a USB or dealer job.
Blue Link, with remote start/climate, lock and car finder after a free trial, is standard from the new SEL Plus up. The volume SE and SEL go without, and there is no phone-as-key.
Two front USB-A ports are standard, but there are no rear USB ports, no USB-C and no household outlet. For 2020, wireless charging moved down from the Ultimate to the SEL Plus.
A proximity key with push-button start is standard from the volume SEL up, though the base SE uses a conventional key. Remote start comes only through Blue Link from the SEL Plus, and there is no hands-free liftgate or phone-as-key.
A rearview camera with parking guidelines is standard, but rear parking sensors are limited to the top Ultimate, and no surround-view camera or front sensors are offered.
A pop-up combiner head-up display is standard on the Ultimate and unusual in the 2020 subcompact class, but it is not available on the volume trims.
8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.01D
A tight 34.6-inch rear seat, small rear door openings and a 19.2 cu ft cargo hold make rear-facing seats and strollers a squeeze. IIHS rates its LATCH hardware Marginal.
Crash credentials are strong (NHTSA 5 stars overall, IIHS Good in every crash test and a Top Safety Pick with the right options), and AEB and lane keeping are standard. The volume SE/SEL/SEL Plus have Poor-rated halogen headlights, the SE lacks blind-spot warning, and adaptive cruise and pedestrian AEB are Ultimate-only.
With four aboard, the cramped rear seat, lack of rear vents and rear USB ports, and the small cargo hold limit trips to short getaways.
The Kona is small, light and nimble in traffic, and the 2.0L's conventional 6-speed automatic is smooth at low speed. The busy ride and road noise add some fatigue, and the 147-hp engine strains when merging.
30 MPG combined on regular fuel from the 2.0L FWD is solid for a gas subcompact SUV, and the small tires and simple powertrain keep consumables cheap.
A short body and a tight 34.8-ft turning circle make it easy to thread through cities and fit into tight spaces. The thick rear pillars and lack of parking sensors below the Ultimate are the drawbacks.
There is no US tow rating, the cargo hold is small and the 147-hp 2.0L has little reserve under load. It is not meaningfully work-capable.
The Kona is built for light personal use, with hard plastics that wear well but no fleet or hard-use reputation.
Beyond cargo-floor tie-down hooks, the split-level cargo floor and roof side rails, there are no work-oriented provisions: no outlets, no factory hitch and no upfit ecosystem.
A roughly 396-mile range is decent, but road noise, the busy ride and adaptive cruise limited to the Ultimate (new for 2020) make long highway stints more tiring than in the best rivals.
AWD with a lock mode is optional with both gas engines, and roof side rails take bike or ski racks. Its 6.7 inches of ground clearance and no tow rating keep it to gravel roads at most.
A 60/40 split rear seat and a split-level cargo floor help, but at 45.8 cu ft maximum the Kona swallows less bulky gear than most rivals.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.20C
The Kona is one of the more agile subcompact crossovers: light, composed and grippy in corners, with good body control. AWD models gain a multi-link rear suspension.
The steering is quick and accurately weighted but transmits little road feel.
The brakes stop the Kona smoothly in town, with a predictable pedal and average emergency-stop performance for the class.
The volume 2.0L's conventional 6-speed automatic shifts smoothly and avoids CVT rubber-banding. The 147-hp engine with its high-rpm torque peak feels strained when merging or passing.
The 2.0L gets coarse and loud when revved for merges, adding to a cabin reviewers already call noisy. It is inoffensive at a cruise.
A very tight turning circle for an SUV makes U-turns and parking easy.
Controls are logically laid out with physical knobs and buttons, and the seating position is commanding enough. The volume SEL's manual seat has limited adjustment, and the thick rear pillars limit over-the-shoulder view.
The chassis is playful for the class, but the 2.0L volume trims lack the punch to make it truly fun. The 175-hp turbo on the Limited and Ultimate is the enthusiast pick.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Kona's strongest categories.2.59C+
The 2020 SE includes a 7-inch touchscreen with wired CarPlay/Android Auto, forward collision avoidance, lane-keeping assist and driver-attention warning for about $21k. The volume SEL adds blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alerts plus alloys. Even so, adaptive cruise is limited to the top Ultimate trim and the base 2.0L/6AT is plain, so equipment is competitive rather than generous.
A roughly $24.6k SEL AWD and a 175-hp turbo Limited at about $27k delivered offer good content and performance per dollar for the class. The weak base 2.0L and the tight rear seat and cargo area keep it short of a standout bargain.
There are five gas trims (SE, SEL, the new SEL Plus, Limited, Ultimate) across two engines, AWD is optional on every trim, and the Kona Electric is a separate offering. That is a well-spaced range from about $21k to $30k, though it lacked the performance N Line and Kona N that arrived with the 2022 facelift.
US Kona sales rose to a record 76,253 in 2020, up from 73,326 in 2019, even though the overall market fell sharply during COVID. It was a solid, growing seller, though still behind class leaders like the Crosstrek, Trax and HR-V.
By 2020 Hyundai was rising on warranty strength, safety awards and bold design. It remained a mainstream value brand without Toyota-, Honda- or Subaru-level loyalty or resale.
The 2020 model year sold before the chip shortage. In spring 2020 Hyundai ran aggressive COVID-era offers (0% financing for up to 84 months, deferred payments, Hyundai Assurance Job Loss Protection), and Kona discounts below MSRP were routine.
MY2020 is the third year of the first-generation Kona (2018–2023) and still before its 2022 facelift. The design was current in 2020 but no longer new, and a refresh was two years away.
The Kona was a strongly reviewed subcompact, praised for handling, styling and value. It won the 2019 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year and earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2020. Reviewers often ranked it at or near the top of the class, with cramped cargo space and the weak base engine as the usual criticisms.
