The verdict
A struggling subcompact suv, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.
The 2018 Kia Niro is a used hybrid that gets 49 MPG combined. It is cheap to buy and cheap to run, and it has good rear-seat room and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ body. In exchange you get a slow 139-hp powertrain, front-wheel drive only, a small 19.4 cu ft cargo hold, and active safety tech that most trims lack. It makes the most sense as an economical commuter or small-family car, not as a do-everything SUV.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Niro's lowest-graded category.0.00F
2018 is a carry-over year in the first generation (DE, 2017–2022) for the hybrid, which keeps the 1.6L Atkinson four plus electric motor for 139 hp combined. That is below the 150 hp floor of the SUV band.
Kia rates the combined system at 195 lb-ft. The motor's low-speed torque helps around town, but the figure is still lower-mid pack against the SUV band.
The powertrain did not change from 2017. Published instrumented tests run from 8.6 s (Car and Driver) to 10.1 s (MotorWeek, Touring), so ≈9.4 s is a fair central figure, near the slow end of the SUV band.
It is quiet and smooth in gentle driving, and electric-to-gas transitions are mostly unobtrusive at a cruise. Pushed hard, the small 1.6 turns buzzy and strained, and engine engagement is more noticeable than in Toyota's planetary-split hybrids.
The 6-speed dual-clutch gives real gear steps with no CVT drone. It loses points for the usual dual-clutch hesitation and occasional jerky engagement when creeping in stop-and-go traffic.
Kia publishes no US tow rating for the first-generation Niro hybrid, and the US owner's manual does not recommend trailer towing. The 1,323 lb figure seen on some sites is a European rating.
Every 2018 Niro, hybrid or plug-in and in every trim, is front-wheel drive only.
This is a pavement crossover. It has about 6.3 in of ground clearance, front-wheel drive and low-rolling-resistance tires, with no skid plates, terrain modes or off-road trim. EPA classes it as a small station wagon.
For 2018 the Niro grew from hybrid-only to a hybrid plus a new Plug-in Hybrid (26 mi electric range). The battery-electric Niro EV did not reach the US until the 2019 model year, so 2018 offered two related electrified powertrains, with no gas-only or AWD choice.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Niro's best-graded category.4.00A+
The volume LX/EX hybrid is EPA-rated at 49 MPG combined. The base FE gets 50 and the 18-inch-wheel Touring drops to 43.
The volume trim is EPA-rated at 51 MPG city.
The volume trim is EPA-rated at 46 MPG highway.
The EPA total range for the volume hybrid trim is 583 miles on one tank.
EPA estimates $1,350 a year for regular fuel at 15,000 miles, among the lowest of any gas-burning SUV.
The hybrid runs on regular unleaded and never needs plugging in. No hybrid trim has a premium-fuel or charging requirement.
3SafetyGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.85F
NHTSA never crash-tested the 2018 Niro Hybrid. Every NCAP category is listed as Not Rated, so it scores 0 under the 'never rated' rule.
The 2018 Niro was an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and scored Good in all six crashworthiness tests, including both small-overlap tests. The award depends on the optional AEB and on the HID headlights fitted only to upper trims, which keeps the score off the top of the band.
AEB with pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, lane departure/keep assist and Smart Cruise Control are standard only on the Touring. On LX/EX they come in the optional Advanced Technology Package, and the FE cannot get them at all. Blind-spot detection is fitted to mid trims and above only.
The optional AEB earned a Superior vehicle-to-vehicle rating, avoiding collisions in both the 12 and 25 mph tests. No pedestrian or nighttime result exists for this model year, and most buyers' cars lack the system.
Blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert is alert-only, with no active braking. It comes on mid and upper trims and is missing from the base FE. Sources disagree on whether the LX includes it.
Lane departure warning/lane keep assist is only optional on LX/EX and standard on Touring. No lane-centering function was offered for 2018; Lane Following Assist did not arrive until the 2020 refresh.
Smart Cruise Control is available, but only on the Touring or through the LX/EX technology package, and there is no lane-centering highway assist to pair it with. The volume trims ship with conventional cruise.
No 2018 Niro offers hands-free driving; even lane centering was unavailable.
The HID projectors on the Touring/EX Premium are rated Good, but the halogen projectors on the volume FE/LX/EX trims are rated Poor.
The low, wagon-like profile and generous glass give good forward and side sightlines. Rear three-quarter vision is ordinary, a rear camera is standard, and there is no surround view; rear parking sensors are on upper trims only.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable. Two rear positions have full LATCH hardware and the center has a tether anchor only. The subcompact rear seat makes rear-facing seats a squeeze.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Niro's weakest categories.0.81F
Two-row five-seater on every 2018 trim, the floor of the SUV band.
Generous front headroom for a subcompact crossover.
Front legroom is average-to-short against SUV rivals.
The tall roofline gives rear headroom well above the subcompact norm.
Rear legroom is roomy for the segment; adults fit behind adults.
No third row is offered on any 2018 Niro; it is a two-row five-seater.
Cargo behind the rear seat is small even for a subcompact crossover, closer to a hatchback.
Maximum cargo sits just below the bottom of the SUV band.
Ordinary storage: a bin ahead of the shifter, a center armrest and a hidden underfloor cargo tray from the LX up. The 110V inverter is Touring-only.
The cloth seats on the volume LX are comfortable but only manually adjustable; the 10-way power driver seat with lumbar comes on Touring only.
The suspension soaks up most bumps on 16-inch wheels and rides more like a compact hatchback than a truck-based crossover; the 18-inch Touring rides firmer.
Road and wind noise are well damped for the price, but the 1.6L engine drones when pushed.
Dual-zone automatic climate is standard. Heated front seats start at EX; ventilated seats and a heated wheel are limited to Touring and the EX Premium package.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Niro's strongest categories.3.65A-
The 2018 hybrid lineup opens with the 50-MPG FE at $23,340 plus $940 destination. Prices are up modestly from the 2017 launch year.
The LX is treated as the volume trim, consistent with the adjacent model years. A typically optioned EX at about $27,100 delivered would still sit at the cheap end of the SUV band.
Industry projections disagree widely. CarEdge puts nameplate maintenance and repair at about $2,640 over 5 years, while Edmunds' new-car projections for the adjacent 2019–2020 Niro run about $6,500–$7,100. The score uses a figure between them, weighted toward Edmunds.
CarEdge projects about 50% retention for the nameplate. The 2018's fifth year (2023) followed the used-car price spike, when demand for hybrids held values up, so a figure above the CarEdge projection is used.
Kia's 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty beats the 3-year/36,000-mile segment norm.
Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage for the original owner, with matching hybrid-battery coverage, is industry-leading.
There is no complimentary scheduled maintenance. Kia includes 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance and a UVO connected-services trial, which puts it in the basic-roadside band.
$24,590 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (57% retained, or about $14,016) leaves about $10,574 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $16,574 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.28C
2018 is the second model year of the first generation (2017–2022) and a carry-over year for the hybrid; the PHEV joined the lineup this year. J.D. Power rates the 2018 at 80/100 for Quality & Reliability ('Average'), and NHTSA has no complaints filed under the 2018 Niro. Consumer Reports' owner data, though, now rates the 2018 below other 2018 models, so the signals are mixed. It sits at about the segment median, between the launch-year 2017 and the settled 2019.
In the 2018 era Kia was at or near the top of J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study, and it later became the top mass-market brand in the Vehicle Dependability Study for 2022–2024. It is mid-to-upper pack in Consumer Reports' brand rankings. The Theta II and Nu engine campaigns from this era keep it short of the consistent top-5 band. Neither engine is in the Niro, but this item grades the brand.
NHTSA lists three campaigns for the 2018 Niro, and all three are fire risks. Two are for the hybrid power relay assembly main relay under the rear seat: 18V-666, then 22V-836 because the first fix was not enough and had to be redone. The third, 23V-534, is for the DCT's hydraulic clutch actuator. That is one fewer than the 2017 (it misses the 18V-257 actuator seal recall), but repeated fire-risk recalls including a failed remedy keep it in the low band.
The 2018 Niro Hybrid carries over the 1.6L Kappa GDI engine and a 32 kW motor with a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (139 hp combined), the same family as the Ioniq Hybrid, which has built a high-mileage record. Its flags are the high-voltage relay recall shared with the 2017, the DCT hydraulic clutch actuator fire recall, low-speed DCT judder, and GDI carbon build-up. None of the Theta II or Nu engine campaigns apply. A proven design with real early-year flags, so lower middle band.
The 2018 has the pre-facelift cabin, with a 7-inch touchscreen on most trims (8-inch with navigation on the top trims). It has a soft-touch upper dash and door tops, but plenty of hard plastic lower down. Reviewers call it well assembled and practical but plain, which is competitive for the price rather than class-leading.
J.D. Power's 80/100 rating, which measures first-90-day defects, is average, and Kia was the top or near-top brand in that era's Initial Quality Studies. NHTSA has no complaints filed under the 2018 Niro. Owner complaints are scattered and mostly about HVAC and the 12-volt battery rather than rattles or panel gaps. Generally solid.
Kia's roughly 800 US dealers put service within reach almost anywhere, and the Niro's hybrid hardware is shared with Hyundai's Ioniq. Service satisfaction is the weak half: Kia sits below the mass-market average in J.D. Power's Customer Service Index. A dense network with an ordinary service experience.
Upkeep is cheap: RepairPal puts the Niro at about $377 a year, below Kia's $474 brand average, and the first generation's six-year run means plenty of parts supply. The high-voltage system and DCT are dealer-only work. Most 2018 cars are now near or past the 10-year/100,000-mile hybrid warranty, and second owners only ever had 5-year/60,000-mile coverage.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Niro's weakest categories.0.59F
The volume LX gets the 7-inch UVO3 screen, at the bottom of the band; the 8-inch navigation unit is Touring-only.
UVO3 is simple and fairly quick, with physical shortcut buttons and climate knobs, but the 7-inch screen and graphics were already dated.
Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard on every trim, the FE included. No trim offers wireless projection.
Native navigation comes only with the 8-inch Touring/EX Premium unit, so most buyers rely on phone projection plus basic voice commands.
Six speakers on lower trims; an eight-speaker Harman Kardon system is available only on Touring.
The pre-facelift cluster pairs conventional gauges with a small 4.2-inch LCD hybrid/trip display. The 7-inch digital cluster came with the 2020 refresh.
No over-the-air software updates; map updates go through a dealer or a USB download.
UVO3 eServices links the phone for vehicle diagnostics and service info, but there is no remote start, remote climate or digital key on the volume trim.
USB-A and 12V outlets up front. Wireless charging and the 110V inverter are Touring-only, and there is no USB-C.
Smart Key proximity entry, push-button start and Smart Trunk are standard from the volume LX up. There is no remote start or phone-as-key.
A rear camera with dynamic guidelines is standard; front and rear parking sensors come only on Touring/EX Premium, and no surround view is offered.
No head-up display on any first-generation Niro.
8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.59D
Wide rear doors, a tall rear roofline and 37.4 in of legroom make car seats easy to fit, but 19.4 cu ft of cargo struggles with a stroller plus groceries.
IIHS Top Safety Pick+ crash structure, but AEB and lane keeping are optional extras on the LX/EX. NHTSA never rated the 2018 model.
Four adults ride comfortably, but rear vents/amenities are thin and luggage space with the seats up is small.
Easy and relaxed in town, with good outward visibility and quiet electric creep. The DCT can be slightly hesitant at low speed in Eco mode.
About 49–50 MPG combined makes it one of the cheapest crossovers to commute in.
A compact, hatch-like footprint and tight 34.8 ft turning circle make it easy to park, though sensors are top-trim only.
Not rated for towing in the US, and the small cargo area plus 139 hp make it unsuitable for work duty.
The hybrid powertrain is generally durable, but this is a light commuter crossover with no work or fleet reputation.
Few work provisions beyond cargo tie-down hooks and roof rails (LX+); the 110V inverter is Touring-only.
Nearly 600 miles per tank and a comfortable ride. But adaptive cruise is optional, the seats are manual and the engine drones on long grades.
Front-wheel drive only, with modest ground clearance and no tow rating. Roof rails allow a bike or cargo box.
The 60/40 split rear seat folds to 54.5 cu ft and there is an underfloor tray and roof rails, but no hitch rating and modest volume.

Low hybrid battery placement and a multilink rear suspension keep it planted and nimble for a crossover, though it is not engaging.
Weighting is fine and changes noticeably in Sport mode, but there is little on-center feel or feedback.
Regen-to-friction blending feels natural for a hybrid, but instrumented emergency stops are only average.
The six-speed DCT feels more natural than a CVT and shifts quickly, but Eco mode is lethargic and low-speed engagement is occasionally abrupt.
Quiet at cruise, but the 1.6L four sounds coarse and buzzy at full throttle.
A very tight turning circle for an SUV, near the best end of the band.
A car-like, slightly raised seat with a tilt/telescopic wheel, logical physical controls and good sightlines. A power seat is Touring-only.
The DCT and Sport mode give it more verve than a Prius, but at roughly 9.4 s to 60 mph it remains a commuter appliance.

Every trim gets Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and dual-zone climate control. Blind-spot detection starts at the EX, and automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist come only on the Touring or as packages, so it is thinner on standard safety tech than some rivals.
A 50-MPG (FE) hybrid crossover from about $24,300 delivered, with the industry's longest warranty, is strong value. The slow 139-hp combined powertrain, lack of AWD and optional-only active safety keep it out of the top band.
Four hybrid trims run from $23,340 to $32,000, and the Niro Plug-in Hybrid (LX, EX, EX Premium) joined the lineup for 2018. Every version is FWD-only with one engine, and the EV had not yet arrived.
With 28,232 units, 2018 was the Niro's peak US sales year in its first generation, and it was one of the best-selling non-Toyota hybrids. It was still small next to subcompact-SUV volume leaders.
Kia's image was improving in 2018 (strong J.D. Power IQS showings and the Stinger launch), but it remained a value brand rather than an aspirational one.
There were no supply constraints in 2018, and Kia ran normal cash and financing programs, so buyers could typically buy below MSRP. Strong sales that year meant discounts were somewhat smaller than for 2019.
2018 was the second model year of the generation that launched for 2017. It was a carry-over for the hybrid, with the plug-in added; the facelift came for 2020 and the second generation for 2023.
Reviewers consistently praised its fuel economy, practicality and value. It rarely won comparison tests because of its modest performance.
