The verdict
A struggling subcompact suv, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.
The 2021 Kia Niro is a tall hybrid hatchback with a crossover label. It earns its keep at the pump, where the volume trims are EPA-rated at 49 MPG combined (about $1,350 a year in regular fuel), and on price, starting at $25,865 with Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. You give up a lot for that thrift: 0-60 mph takes 9.7 seconds, every trim is front-wheel drive, the cargo hold is small for an SUV, and key safety tech is reserved for the trims above the base LX. Buy one as a frugal commuter, not as an all-weather family hauler.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Niro's lowest-graded category.0.00F
2021 is a carry-over year of the first-generation (DE) Niro, which got its mid-cycle refresh for 2020. The hybrid comes one way only: a 1.6L Atkinson-cycle GDI four plus a 32 kW motor, 139 hp net. That is below the 150 hp floor of the SUV band.
195 lb-ft of combined torque, with the electric motor's low-speed pull helping it in town. That is modest for the class.
Edmunds measured 9.7 s to 60 mph, which is slower than the 9.5 s slow end of the SUV band. Merging and passing on the highway take planning.
Handoffs between the engine and electric motor are generally smooth and the car is quiet at a cruise. The 1.6L gets buzzy under hard throttle, and there is little power in reserve for passing.
Unlike the CVTs most hybrids use, the Niro has a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic. It gives the car a conventional, CVT-drone-free feel with decisive shifts, though it can be slightly hesitant at crawl speeds.
Kia publishes no US tow rating for the 2020–2021 Niro hybrid and does not recommend trailering. Some markets list a light rating, but the US car has none, so it scores the bottom of the band.
Every 2021 Niro (hybrid, PHEV and EV) is front-wheel drive only. AWD is not offered on any trim.
This is a tall hatchback with a crossover label. It has about 6.3 in of ground clearance, FWD only, no terrain modes and no underbody protection, so it is strictly a car for pavement and gravel roads.
The 2021 Niro nameplate is offered as a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and a full EV, which is unusually broad electrified coverage for a subcompact. It has no conventional gas or performance option.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Niro's best-graded category.4.00A+
The volume LX/EX hybrid is EPA-rated at 49 MPG combined. The FE trim reaches 50 MPG and the Touring, on 18-inch wheels, drops to 43.
The volume trim is EPA-rated at 51 MPG city, where the hybrid system does its best work.
The volume trim is EPA-rated at 46 MPG highway.
EPA publishes no range figure for a non-plug-in hybrid, so range is the 11.9-gallon tank times 49 MPG combined, about 583 miles.
EPA estimates $1,350 a year in regular fuel for the volume trim at 15,000 miles a year.
It runs on regular unleaded and needs no plug or special fuel. Together with the high MPG, that keeps running costs low and simple.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.70C-
The 2021 first-generation Niro Hybrid carries a four-star NHTSA overall rating: five stars in the side tests, but only four for frontal (driver 4, passenger 3) and four for rollover. The PHEV and EV variants were not rated, but the scored powertrain is the hybrid.
Every IIHS crashworthiness test is rated Good — small overlap driver and passenger, moderate overlap, side, roof strength and head restraints — with only Acceptable sub-measures (passenger-side structure, right-leg injury in the moderate overlap). It earned no 2021 Top Safety Pick, though: Kia put eight other models on the 2021 list but not the Niro, held back by its Poor-rated base headlights and optional-only crash prevention.
The base LX gets no automatic emergency braking and no blind-spot monitoring. The LXS, the volume trim, adds Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian detection, Lane Keeping Assist, and blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warnings. Adaptive stop-and-go cruise and lane centering are kept for Touring and EX Premium, so core features arrive one trim up and ACC sits near the top of the range.
IIHS rates the equipped system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle (it avoided collisions at both 12 and 25 mph) and Advanced for daytime pedestrian, where it slowed rather than avoided the 25 mph crossing child. Nighttime pedestrian performance was never evaluated, and the system is not on the base LX.
Blind-spot collision warning and rear cross-traffic collision warning are standard from the LXS up, so most trims have them, but they only warn: there is no cross-traffic braking or active blind-spot steering. The entry LX has neither.
The volume LXS gets bounce-style Lane Keeping Assist. True centering (Lane Following Assist) is reserved for Touring, Touring SE and EX Premium, where reviewers find it competent but dependent on clear markings. The LX has neither.
Kia's Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go is well regarded, but on the 2021 Niro Hybrid it comes only on the upper Touring, Touring SE and EX Premium trims, and Highway Driving Assist only on Touring SE and EX Premium. The volume LXS has conventional cruise, which puts the representative configuration at the bottom of the band.
No hands-free driving is available on any 2021 Niro. The most capable system, Highway Driving Assist on the top trims, requires hands on the wheel.
IIHS's first-generation Niro headlight results split sharply. The halogen projector low beams on lower trims rate Poor, and only the premium projector units on top trims rate Good. The volume LX/LXS trims carry the halogen setup, and the headlights were a factor keeping the 2021 Niro off the Top Safety Pick list.
The first-generation Niro's low, wagon-like body with a large rear quarter window and upright tailgate glass gives good all-round sightlines, with only moderately thick A- and C-pillars. A rear camera is standard, but surround-view is not offered.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable: complete lower anchors at the two outboard rear seats plus a tether-only center position. Wide rear doors help, but subcompact rear space limits rear-facing seats behind tall front occupants, and three-across is impractical.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Niro's weakest categories.0.87F
2021 is a carry-over year of the first-generation Niro, which was refreshed for 2020. It is a two-row five-seater with no three-row option.
40.1 in of front headroom is generous for a subcompact crossover. The Niro's tall-wagon roofline helps here.
Front legroom is about average for the segment. Taller drivers fit, but it is not expansive.
39.1 in of rear headroom is a strength. Its flat roof gives the Niro more rear headroom than many sloped-roof subcompact crossovers.
37.4 in of rear legroom is good for a subcompact, and two adults fit comfortably. A 106.3 in wheelbase gives the Niro a longer cabin than most B-segment rivals.
There is no third row on any trim. It is a two-row, five-seat subcompact crossover.
19.4 cu ft is reasonable for a subcompact hybrid but falls below the bottom of the SUV-wide band. The hybrid battery under the rear seat keeps the floor fairly flat.
54.5 cu ft with the rear seats folded is just under the SUV band floor. That is competitive with subcompacts but small next to compact SUVs.
Everyday storage is competitive. The center console bin is useful, there are door pockets, and an under-floor cargo tray hides small items. Nothing stands out beyond that: there is no household outlet, and the 60/40 rear seat does not fold perfectly flat.
Reviewers call the seats soft and comfortable for commuting, and the rear bench is roomy for the class. Lower trims have manual adjustment only, and long-haul support is merely average.
It rides smoothly over rough pavement for a small car. The multi-link rear suspension and long wheelbase help, and the ride gets busier only over sharp impacts.
It is quiet at low speed in EV mode, but road and tire noise are noticeable at highway speeds, and the 1.6L gets buzzy under hard acceleration.
Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard. Heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel are limited to the top EX Premium trim, and the car has no rear vents and no remote climate preconditioning on volume trims.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Niro's strongest categories.3.36B+
The entry 2021 Niro hybrid LX lists at $24,690 plus $1,175 destination, about $100 more than the 2020 LX.
The LXS, which adds the Drive Wise active-safety suite, is the volume trim and the one Edmunds uses for its cost-to-own model.
Edmunds' five-year projection for the LXS is mid-pack for a subcompact SUV. CarEdge projects a much lower figure for the nameplate, so the real cost probably sits below Edmunds'.
CarEdge projects about 50% depreciation over five years. Edmunds' $10,085 five-year depreciation on the $27,265 LXS implies about 63% retained, helped by the 2021–22 used-car price spike, so the score uses a value between the two.
Kia's 5-year/60,000-mile basic coverage beats the 3-year/36,000-mile norm in the segment.
Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty (original owner) and matching hybrid-battery coverage are the longest in the industry.
There is no complimentary scheduled maintenance. Kia includes 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance and a UVO connected-services trial, which puts it in the basic-roadside band.
$27,265 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (55% retained, or about $14,996) leaves about $12,269 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,647 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $18,916 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Niro's strongest categories.2.40C+
2021 carries over the 2020 refresh unchanged in the first generation (2017–2022), so the hybrid hardware had four model years of production behind it. Consumer Reports has no rating for the 2021 Niro hybrid (every column reads NA), so the prediction rests on the neighbouring years, which CR rated about average, and on the Niro's J.D. Power history in the 74–80 'Average' band. NHTSA holds 9 owner complaints for the 2021 Niro, including a DCT clutch that does not fully disengage and an HEV warning that told the driver to pull over. That is a light count, but it points at the same weak spot as the recall. Average signals on a mature platform put it just above the segment median.
Kia's quality standing slipped for the 2021 model year compared with 2020. It fell to 6th in J.D. Power's 2021 Initial Quality Study at 147 PP100, down from tied-for-first at 136. In the 2024 Vehicle Dependability Study, which surveys owners of 2021-MY vehicles, it scored 187 PP100, just better than the 190 industry average and well behind Toyota's 147. That is solidly mid-pack, a few points below where the 2020 car sits.
NHTSA lists exactly one campaign for the 2021 Niro, and it is a serious one. 23V-534 (Kia SC276) covers fluid leaking into the circuit board of the DCT's hydraulic clutch actuator, which can cause an engine-compartment fire. It applies to 2017–2022 Niro and Niro PHEV vehicles. Owner complaints filed after the recall say the remedy has been slow at some dealers. A single recall is a light count, but a powertrain fire risk keeps this below the segment median.
The 2021 car uses the same first-generation hybrid powertrain as 2020: a 1.6L Kappa GDI engine and a 32 kW motor with a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission, 139 hp combined. It is a high-volume family shared with the Ioniq Hybrid, and owners report examples past 200,000 miles. The weak point is the DCT. Its hydraulic clutch actuator is the subject of the SC276 fire recall, and 2021 owners have filed NHTSA complaints that the clutch fails to disengage fully. The GDI engine also tends to build up carbon. None of the Theta II or Nu engine campaigns apply. A proven family with a real transmission flag, so mid-band.
The 2021 cabin is the 2020 refresh carried over: a redesigned dash, a standard 8-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch screen on upper trims. Materials follow a budget hybrid's script, with soft-touch upper dash and door surfaces and plenty of hard plastic lower down. Reviewers call it well put together for the price but not premium.
This is a mature build in its fifth model year, and complaints are scattered. A 2021 owner complained to NHTSA about glare from the reflective silver dash trim, and another reported a sunroof shattering. Kia's initial quality also slipped to 6th in J.D. Power's 2021 IQS. Generally solid, just below the 2020 car.
Kia's roughly 800 US dealers put service within reach almost anywhere, and the Niro's hybrid hardware is shared across Hyundai and Kia models. Service satisfaction is the weak half: Kia sits below the mass-market average in J.D. Power's Customer Service Index.
Upkeep is cheap: RepairPal puts the Niro at about $377 a year, below Kia's $474 brand average, and the first generation's six-year run means abundant parts and salvage supply. Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile hybrid warranty protects original owners. The high-voltage system and DCT are dealer-only work, though, and second owners get only 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage.

The volume LXS has the 8-in touchscreen. The 10.25-in widescreen navigation unit comes on the upper trims only.
Kia's UVO system of this era is quick and logically laid out. It keeps physical volume/tune knobs and climate controls, and reviewers consistently rate it easy to use, though its graphics look dated next to newer systems.
For 2021, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard on every 8-in-screen trim, including the volume LX/LXS. Oddly, the 10.25-in navigation trims keep wired-only projection.
Native navigation comes only with the 10.25-in system on upper trims (with 10 years of MapCare updates), and voice control is basic command-based. Volume-trim owners rely on phone projection.
The base six-speaker system is adequate. A Harman Kardon premium system is available, but only on the top trims.
Volume trims pair analog gauges with a 4.2-in TFT display. A larger 7-in TFT cluster comes on upper trims, and no full-digital panel is offered.
The first-generation Niro has no over-the-air vehicle or infotainment updates. Navigation map refreshes come through MapCare by dealer or USB download.
UVO link telematics (remote lock, climate and locate through the app) is limited to Touring and up. Volume LX/LXS trims get key-fob remote start at most, and there is no digital key.
There are USB-A ports up front plus a rear charge port, but no USB-C, and the wireless phone charger comes on EX Premium only. No household AC outlet is offered.
From the LXS up, Smart Key proximity entry and push-button start are standard, and new remote engine start works from the fob. The base LX uses a traditional key, and the car offers no power or hands-free liftgate and no phone-as-key.
Every trim gets a rear camera with dynamic guidelines. Rear parking sensors are limited to upper trims, and no surround-view camera or automated parking is offered.
No head-up display is offered on any 2021 Niro trim. A HUD arrived only with the second-generation car.

Generous rear headroom (39.1 in) and legroom (37.4 in) plus a low step-in height make car-seat installs and kid loading easy for the class. Cargo space for a stroller plus groceries is modest at 19.4 cu ft.
Rear Occupant Alert became standard for 2021, and forward collision avoidance and lane-keeping assist are standard on the volume trims. Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning, smart cruise and Highway Driving Assist cost extra, and the base LX skips some features.
The rear seat is roomy for the class and the ride is smooth, but there are no rear vents, and luggage space for four is tight. Highway road noise adds fatigue on long trips.
In town it is quiet and easy, with electric assist at low speed, a smooth ride and simple controls. Slow acceleration in fast traffic and slightly abrupt brakes at a stop are the annoyances.
This is one of the cheapest crossovers to commute in. EPA ratings run about 49–50 MPG combined (FE trim higher), and regular fuel and Kia-cheap consumables keep running costs low.
A compact 171.5 in footprint and a tight 34.8 ft turning circle make it easy to park in the city, and visibility is good. Rear sensors and a richer camera system are limited to upper trims.
The US Niro hybrid has no tow rating and a modest payload. With FWD, 139 hp and limited cargo volume, it is not a meaningful work vehicle.
This is a commuter-oriented hybrid with no fleet reputation for hard use. The powertrain is generally reliable, but its interior and chassis are not built for abuse.
It has no onboard power outlet, no tow hitch rating and no upfit ecosystem. Basic cargo tie-down hooks and roof rails on some trims are its only work provisions.
Range is excellent (about 550+ miles from an 11.9-gal tank at ~50 MPG), and Highway Driving Assist is available on the top trim. Highway road noise, merely average seats and modest passing power cap it as a tourer.
It is FWD only with about 6.3 in of ground clearance and no tow rating. Roof rails on some trims let it carry a bike or cargo box, but it is pavement-and-gravel only.
A 60/40 split-folding rear seat opens up 54.5 cu ft, and an under-floor tray and roof rails help. Bulky gear is a squeeze, and no hitch is offered.

The low-mounted battery, car-like ride height and multi-link rear suspension give it confident, composed handling for a subcompact crossover. Its eco tires limit grip, so it is secure rather than engaging.
Reviewers describe the steering as accurate and predictable, though light and short on feedback.
Stopping power is adequate, but the blend between regenerative and friction braking is unrefined, and stops can feel abrupt at the end.
The engine/motor handoffs are mostly smooth, and the 6-speed dual-clutch avoids CVT rubber-banding. Response is lazy at highway speed, and the DCT can hesitate at a crawl.
It is near-silent in EV mode and at a steady cruise, but the 1.6L four gets buzzy and intrusive under hard acceleration.
Kia lists a 17 ft 5 in minimum turning radius, which is about a 34.8 ft turning circle. That is tight for an SUV.
Physical buttons and knobs for climate and audio, a tilt/telescoping wheel and good sightlines make for sound ergonomics. The seat sits lower than in a typical crossover, and power driver-seat adjustment is limited to upper trims.
It is a pleasant, efficient appliance. The DCT and tidy handling help a little, but the slow acceleration (9.7 s to 60) and buzzy engine leave little reason to take the long way home.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.35C+
For 2021 Kia added a standard rear-seat reminder, made wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto available and added navigation-based smart cruise control. The base LX still lacks the Drive Wise active-safety suite, which comes on the LXS. Competitive for the price, but not loaded.
A 50-MPG hybrid crossover from $25,865 with the industry's longest warranty is strong value. Slow acceleration (about 9.7 s to 60 mph) and no AWD option keep it out of the top band.
There are five well-spaced hybrid trims from $24,690 to $32,950, plus plug-in hybrid and EV versions of the nameplate. Every version is FWD-only with a single engine.
US Niro sales rebounded about 50% in 2021, to 26,192 across all powertrains. That is a solid volume for a hybrid crossover but small next to subcompact-SUV leaders.
In 2021 Kia rebranded with a new logo and had its best US sales year ever, with the Telluride as a halo. Its image was rising but it was still a value brand.
The 2021 model year ran into the chip-shortage inventory crunch. Incentives dried up through 2021 and hybrids often sold at or above MSRP, so deals were occasional and modest at best.
2021 was a carry-over year of the 2017-launched first generation, one year after its 2020 refresh. The second-generation Niro was revealed in November 2021 and replaced it for the 2023 model year, so a redesign was imminent for 2021 buyers.
Reviewers consistently praised its fuel economy, practicality and value, and the Niro EV sibling earned major awards. Modest performance meant the hybrid was rarely the outright pick of the class.
