The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size suv, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.
The 2025 Sorento Hybrid is one of the cheapest ways to get three rows and real hybrid fuel economy: $40,135 delivered for the EX FWD, 36 MPG combined, and more than 600 miles per tank. It also has 5-star NHTSA and IIHS Top Safety Pick crash ratings, and Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain and hybrid-battery warranty. The catches are a third row sized for kids, only 12.6 cu ft of cargo space behind it, a 2,000-lb towing limit and weak resale value. Think of it as a roomy, efficient two-row family car with occasional extra seats, not a full-size three-row hauler.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Hybrid fuel economy and 600-plus-mile range
- Top-tier crash ratings and standard safety tech
- Class-leading warranty coverage
What holds it back
- Small cargo area and a kids-only third row
- Low towing limit on the hybrid
- Weak resale value

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
Risk
If the trailer brake lights stay illuminated while being used, other drivers may be confused, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the trailer tow hitch harness, free of charge. The recall began January 18, 2017. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC142.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Sorento's lowest-graded category.0.75F
The scored hybrid pairs a 177.5-hp 1.6L turbo-four with a 59-hp motor for 227 hp combined. That beats the base 2.5L's 191 hp but is modest for a 4,000-lb three-row.
The electric motor's low-speed torque takes the system to 258 lb-ft, which makes the hybrid feel more eager around town than the naturally aspirated gas model.
About 7.6 seconds is typical for a mainstream mid-size hybrid crossover. It is a clear step up from the base gas engine but slower than the 2.5T.
The 1.6T hybrid pulls strongly at low speed and switches between electric and gas smoothly in most driving. Reviewers note the four-cylinder gets buzzy under hard acceleration, so it trails the smoothest Toyota hybrid systems.
The hybrid uses a conventional 6-speed automatic instead of an eCVT, so it shifts like a normal car with no rubber-band drone. The trade-off is an occasional low-speed clunk as the motor and engine hand off.
Scored on the hybrid being graded here, which Kia rates for 2,000 lbs (1,654 lbs unbraked). That covers a small utility trailer or jet ski. Buyers who need 3,500–4,500 lbs have to choose the gas turbo or X-Pro.
AWD is optional on the Hybrid EX and standard on the SX Prestige. Across the wider Sorento range, AWD is available from the S trim up and standard on X-Line/X-Pro and the PHEV. It uses a center-locking torque-vectoring system, but there is no low range.
The hybrid has only 6.9 in of ground clearance and a 16.8° approach angle. There is no hybrid X-Pro and no underbody protection, so it is a paved-road and gravel-road crossover. Its off-road ability comes from the gas X-Line/X-Pro trims.
There are four distinct powertrains (2.5L, 2.5L turbo, 1.6T hybrid and 1.6T plug-in hybrid), with FWD and AWD across most of them. That is among the widest choices in the mid-size three-row class.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Sorento's best-graded category.4.00A+
The volume Hybrid EX FWD is EPA-rated at 36 mpg combined, one of the best figures among three-row SUVs. The AWD hybrid drops to 34.
The EPA city figure of 36 mpg matches the hybrid's highway figure. Its step-gear 6-speed layout is less city-biased than Toyota-style eCVT hybrids.
It returns 36 mpg on the highway because the geared transmission keeps the engine in an efficient range at cruising speed.
The hybrid keeps the full 17.7-gallon tank, so 36 mpg combined works out to more than 600 miles per fill. That is among the longest ranges of any three-row SUV.
EPA's standard estimate for the FWD hybrid on regular gas is $1,800 a year. That is well below the gas Sorento and typical for a mid-size hybrid crossover.
It runs on 87-octane regular with no premium recommendation and needs no plug-in charging, so there is nothing extra to manage at the pump.
3SafetyOne of the Sorento's strongest categories.3.37B+
NHTSA rates the 2025 Sorento Hybrid 5 stars overall in both FWD and AWD form, the program maximum; frontal and rollover are the weaker legs at 4 stars each.
The 2025 Sorento earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick — not TSP+ — because the updated moderate overlap front test (which scores rear-passenger protection) is only Marginal; small overlap front and the updated side test are Good. The TSP+ that the 2026 model carries applies only to units built after September 2025 with revised restraints, so it does not describe 2025 cars.
On the volume Hybrid EX, Kia Drive Wise covers every core feature as standard: forward collision-avoidance with pedestrian/cyclist detection, lane departure warning and lane keeping, blind-spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, stop-and-go Smart Cruise Control and Highway Driving Assist. The camera-based aids (Blind-Spot View Monitor, surround view) and blind-spot avoidance intervention are held back for the SX-Prestige.
IIHS grades the Sorento's standard front crash prevention Good in both the tougher vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test (higher speeds, motorcycle and trailer targets) and the pedestrian evaluation, which includes nighttime scenarios.
Blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance (with automatic braking) are standard on every trim, and Safe Exit Warning is part of the suite. On the volume EX the blind-spot system warns rather than steers; active blind-spot avoidance and the Blind-Spot View Monitor camera are SX-Prestige items.
Lane keeping assist and Lane Following Assist centering are standard, and Highway Driving Assist on the EX adds navigation-aware centering. Reviewers find it competent and unobtrusive on well-marked highways, with mild wander on curves and faded paint, short of class-best.
Full-speed-range Smart Cruise Control with stop-and-go comes standard, and the volume EX pairs it with Highway Driving Assist so speed, following distance and steering are managed together. Reviewers describe smooth deceleration and prompt resume; the lane-change-assist version (HDA2) is reserved for the top trims.
No hands-free highway system is offered at any trim. Highway Driving Assist and HDA2 are hands-on systems that warn and then disengage when the driver lets go of the wheel.
IIHS rates the headlights Acceptable on every trim, with no Good-rated option anywhere in the range. Standard auto high beams partly make up for weaker beam reach.
The upright, boxy greenhouse and large side glass give better natural sightlines than most sloped-roof rivals in the class. The third-row pillars are the main blind zone, and the surround-view and blind-spot cameras that would cover it are not on the volume EX.
Four complete LATCH sets, two in the second row and two in the third, with exposed lower anchors and easy-to-find top tethers. IIHS still rates ease of use only Acceptable because the lower anchors sit deep in the seat bight, and the second-row doors and third-row opening are on the small side.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Sorento's weakest categories.2.09C
Both 2025 Sorento Hybrid trims come only with second-row captain's chairs, so the scored hybrid seats six; the seven-seat bench is a gas-model configuration.
40.3 in of front headroom sits above the middle of the SUV band.
41.4 in of front legroom is in the lower third of the SUV band — adequate, not generous.
The upright roofline gives 39.1 in of second-row headroom, near the top of the SUV band.
40.7 in of second-row legroom in the hybrid's captain's-chair layout is roomy for adults and the chairs slide to trade space with row three.
With 29.6 in of legroom and 36.8 in of headroom the third row is a children and short-trip space; the captain's chairs do give a walk-through path and easy-fold access.
45 cu ft behind the second row is modest for a three-row SUV, and 12.6 cu ft behind the third row is small; the Sorento is sized closer to a stretched compact.
75.5 cu ft maximum is mid-pack for the SUV band, well short of Telluride/Pilot-class three-rows.
Everyday storage is well organized — console box with armrest, door bottle pockets, rear door cupholders, a dual-level cargo floor and net hooks — but nothing class-leading; the 115V inverter is SX-P only.
Wide, supportive front seats suit many body types and the sliding captain's chairs are comfortable, but the third row is thinly padded and the EX's 10-way driver seat lacks the SX-P's extended adjustment.
The hybrid rides noticeably more gently than the gas 2.5T versions, soaking up bumps with good body control, though sharp impacts still come through on 19-inch wheels.
The hybrid's electric launch and acoustic windshield keep the cabin quiet around town and at cruise; the 1.6T is audible, if not whiny, under hard acceleration.
The volume Hybrid EX has dual-zone auto climate, second-row vents and heated front seats, but ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel are reserved for the pricier SX-P.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Sorento's weakest categories.2.23C
2025 is a carry-over year after the 2024 facelift of the fourth-generation (MQ4) Sorento. The entry point is the gas LX FWD, one of the cheapest ways into a three-row mid-size SUV; the hybrid line starts at the EX.
This scorecard covers the hybrid, and the EX FWD is the volume hybrid configuration: the cheapest hybrid, with the best EPA figure (36 MPG combined). It costs about $2,000 more than the gas EX 2.5T and undercuts a Highlander Hybrid by several thousand dollars.
The estimators disagree by about 3x, so this is the midpoint of the retrieved range. It is weighted toward KBB because KBB is the only hybrid-specific source. Kia's 5-yr/60k-mi basic warranty covers most repair exposure inside the window.
The hybrid-specific projections sit around 40–43%, below the nameplate-wide figures. The Sorento depreciates a little faster than the mid-size SUV average, and well behind Toyota and Honda hybrids.
Kia's 5-yr/60k-mi basic coverage applies across the 2025 line and beats the 3-yr/36k-mi mainstream norm.
This is the segment benchmark, and it also covers the hybrid's high-voltage battery. The full term applies only to the original owner.
Kia includes no complimentary scheduled maintenance in the US, unlike Hyundai (3 yr/36k mi on the Santa Fe) or ToyotaCare (2 yr/25k mi). It does include long 5-yr/60k-mi roadside assistance with trip interruption, plus a Kia Connect trial. That puts it in the 'basic roadside only' band.
$40,135 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (44% retained, or about $17,659) leaves about $22,476 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,700 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $28,176 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades above the middle of the scale.2.73B-
Consumer Reports predicts the 2025 Sorento Hybrid will be more reliable than the average new car. That rating is based on 2023 model data plus the Kia brand score. It puts the hybrid ahead of the gas Sorento, which CR rates about average. It is still an extrapolation from one source rather than a top-tier result confirmed by several, so it sits in the upper part of the average band.
Kia is solidly mid-pack or a little better, not a top-5 brand. In recent J.D. Power VDS results it scores modestly better than the industry average and ahead of Hyundai and Genesis. In Consumer Reports' brand rankings it sits around the middle of the mainstream brands. It has closed much of the gap to the Japanese leaders without joining them.
The recalls that reach the 2025 Sorento Hybrid are both software fixes: a body-controller fault that can turn off the low beams and taillights, and a failing instrument-panel display. Neither is a mechanical powertrain defect. Two other 2025 Sorento campaigns do not involve the hybrid: a 30-unit connecting-rod bolt recall and a PHEV-only fuel-line crash recall. Earlier in the MQ4 generation, the 2.5T/DCT cars had heavier recalls. For the hybrid this is typical recall activity with nothing systemic.
The hybrid uses Hyundai-Kia's 1.6 T-GDi engine with an electric motor and a 6-speed automatic with a torque converter. The same system has been in volume use since 2021 across the Sorento, Santa Fe, Tucson and Sportage hybrids. It avoids the 8-speed wet DCT behind the recall trouble on 2021-22 gas 2.5T cars, and no hybrid-specific powertrain recall has hit this generation. It does not yet have the long high-mileage record of Toyota's hybrid system, and there are scattered owner complaints about the transmission and 12V battery.
The 2025 model carries over the refreshed cabin from the 2024 facelift: a curved 12.3-inch dual-display panel, an ambient light strip and SynTex upholstery. The SX Prestige hybrid adds real leather and a suede-like headliner. Reviewers call it upscale and well built for a mainstream mid-size SUV, with hard plastics limited to low-touch areas.
Kia's initial quality is strong: it has won more J.D. Power IQS segment awards than any other brand. Sorentos built at West Point, Georgia show no pattern of panel-gap or rattle complaints. Points come off for the body-controller and instrument-cluster software faults on 2025 cars, which owners experience as quality problems, and for scattered build-quality complaints in owner reports.
Coverage is good: Kia has roughly 750-800 US dealers, so warranty and repair work is available almost everywhere. Service satisfaction is the weak point. Kia placed last among mass-market brands in a recent J.D. Power Customer Service Index, well below the industry average. Coverage is adequate and the service experience is mixed to poor.
Running costs for the Sorento are below average, and the hybrid shares its powertrain with three other high-volume Hyundai-Kia hybrids, so parts supply is deep. Hybrid-specific components cost more to replace out of warranty than gas parts. Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain and hybrid-battery warranty covers the expensive failures for the first owner. The aftermarket for the hybrid system is thinner than for conventional drivetrains.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades above the middle of the scale.2.76B-
The post-2024-refresh 12.3-inch touchscreen is standard on both hybrid trims. Kia's media features sheet still reads '10.25-inch', but reviews of the 2025 car and Kia's product pages confirm 12.3 in.
Kia's ccNC software is quick and logically laid out, with physical switchgear retained, but the shared climate/media touch strip below the screen needs a glance to toggle modes.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on both hybrid trims.
Built-in navigation with an integrated modem is standard on the hybrid, with Kia Connect voice recognition that handles common commands; most owners will still use phone projection.
The volume Hybrid EX has only a six-speaker base system; Bose premium audio comes solely on the SX-P, and reviewers rate the Bose as merely decent.
The volume Hybrid EX pairs its big touchscreen with a small 4.0-inch TFT between analog gauges; the 12.3-inch reconfigurable cluster is SX-P only.
The refreshed Sorento's ccNC head unit with integrated modem supports over-the-air infotainment and map updates via Kia Connect; whole-vehicle, feature-adding OTA is limited.
Kia Access with Kia Connect provides remote start/climate, lock/unlock, locate and status, but full services go subscription after the trial and Digital Key 2.0 is SX-P only on the hybrid.
USB-C ports are spread through the cabin and a wireless charger is standard even on the EX, but the 115V household inverter is reserved for the SX-P.
Smart Key proximity entry, push-button start with remote start on the fob and a Smart Power Tailgate with auto close are standard on the EX; phone-as-key needs the SX-P.
The EX has a rear camera plus front and rear parking sensors; Surround View Monitor, Blind-Spot View Monitor, side sensors and rear parking collision-avoidance braking are SX-P only.
Kia's 2025 Sorento Hybrid equipment list shows no head-up display on either hybrid trim — the HUD belongs to top gas SX Prestige grades — so a hybrid buyer cannot get one.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.35C+
Captain's chairs with a walk-through and easy fold/slide access make car-seat and third-row logistics easy in a garage-friendly footprint, but six seats, a kids-only third row and 12.6 cu ft behind it limit big-family use.
Five-star NHTSA overall and an IIHS Top Safety Pick, with a full ADAS suite — AEB with pedestrian/cyclist and junction, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic braking, Safe Exit Assist, rear occupant alert — standard on the EX; the updated moderate-overlap Marginal keeps it off TSP+.
The first two rows are comfortable and quiet with second-row vents and ~600-mile hybrid range, but the third row is kid-scale and luggage space with all seats filled is tiny.
Electric-first launches, a conventional six-speed automatic that shifts smoothly, light steering and standard Highway Driving Assist make it an easy, low-stress commuter.
36 mpg combined (FWD) on regular fuel is among the best of any three-row SUV, though real-world tests fall a few mpg short.
At 189.6 in long with a 37.9-ft turning circle it is several inches shorter than a Telluride or Pilot; the EX has front/rear sensors but surround view is SX-P only.
The hybrid is rated for just 2,000 lb braked towing (1,654 unbraked) versus 3,500–4,500 for gas turbo models; with 75.5 cu ft maximum cargo it handles only light hauling.
A car-based crossover with a hybrid 1.6T and six-speed automatic and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty should hold up with care, but it is unproven as a hard-use work vehicle and has synthetic-leather family trim.
Provisions are family-SUV basics — roof rails, cargo net hooks, dual-level floor and 12V outlets; the 115V inverter is SX-P only and there is no power-export system.
A calm hybrid ride, quiet cabin, supportive front seats and Highway Driving Assist combine with roughly 600+ miles per tank for a strong highway companion.
AWD with Snow mode is optional on the EX and standard on the SX-P, but 6.85 in of clearance, a 16.8° approach angle and a 2,000-lb tow rating keep the hybrid to gravel roads and bike racks.
Flat-folding 50/50 second and third rows, a sliding second row that expands the cargo bay from 38.5 to 45 cu ft, a dual-level floor and standard roof rails cover normal gear, but 75.5 cu ft maximum trails larger three-rows.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.49C+
Responsive and tidy for a three-row, with body roll well controlled through corners, but it is tuned for comfort rather than engagement.
Quick (2.53 turns lock-to-lock) and accurate enough, but light and feedback-free.
A balanced, intuitive pedal with clean regen blending and minimal nosedive; Edmunds' 127-ft stop from 60 mph is about average for the class.
Using a conventional six-speed automatic instead of the gas 2.5T's dual-clutch, the hybrid launches electrically, shifts smoothly and hides gas-electric transitions well.
Quiet at low speed thanks to electric drive, and the 1.6T rarely needs to rev, but it is audibly buzzy when worked hard.
A 37.9-ft turning circle is mid-pack for the SUV band — tighter than the big three-rows.
A tall seating position with good sightlines and primary controls close to hand; the EX's 10-way driver seat and the shared climate/media touch strip are the minor demerits.
Brisk for a hybrid three-row (7.6 s to 60) and pleasantly refined, but dull steering and a comfort bias make it an appliance, not an enthusiast pick.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Sorento's strongest categories.3.13B
Since the 2024 facelift, every 2025 Sorento has had a 12.3-in touchscreen with wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, three rows and a broad ADAS suite. The Hybrid EX adds a power liftgate, heated front seats, a wireless charger and the 12.3-in digital cluster. Rivals such as the Highlander Hybrid charge more for similar content.
A 36-MPG, three-row, 227-hp hybrid for about $40K delivered is hard to match: a Highlander Hybrid starts several thousand dollars higher, and it comes with Kia's warranty. Value is slightly undercut by weak hybrid residuals.
The nameplate offers a wide ladder: gas LX, S, EX and SX, X-Line and X-Pro trims, plus hybrid and PHEV, spanning about $33K to $49K, with FWD or AWD and six- or seven-seat layouts. The hybrid on its own is narrower, with just EX FWD, EX AWD and SX-Prestige AWD.
US sales were about 95,000 a year in 2024 and 2025, holding flat. It is a steady high-volume mid-pack seller, behind the segment leaders and its stablemate Telluride.
Kia's image has moved well past budget-brand status, with record US volume and a strong design and tech reputation. It still isn't aspirational and trails Toyota and Honda on resale.
During its sales run the 2025 hybrid saw modest subvented APR and lease offers, but hybrid demand kept discounts thinner than on the gas trims. Today the model year has sold through and has no factory incentives, while the 2026 hybrid carries 0% APR offers.
The MQ4 generation launched for 2021 and was facelifted for 2024, making 2025 a carry-over year one year after the refresh. It is mid-cycle: current, but not cutting-edge.
It is well reviewed as a value-rich three-row hybrid, but reviewers flag the tight third row and small cargo space. The 2025 earned IIHS Top Safety Pick, not TSP+ (only the 2026 built after Sept 2025 got TSP+), and it rarely wins comparison tests against the Highlander Hybrid or Santa Fe Hybrid.
